ABSTRACT The fungus that causes Asian soybean rust, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, shows crossed and multiple resistance to the three chemical groups of site-specific fungicides (triazoles, strobilurins and carboxamides). This fact evidences the need to implement strategies for the preventive management of resistance. An alternative can be the use of microorganisms capable of interfering in the development of pathogens, as well as of acting as resistance inducers in the plants. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of a biological product based on Bacillus subtilis BV02, alone or in association with a copper-based product, on Asian soybean rust control, as well as the agronomic performance of soybean. Thus, two experiments were developed, one in the field and another one in the laboratory. For the experiment conducted in the field, a randomized block design was used with (5x2)+1 factorial arrangement of treatments, including four replicates. The first factor corresponded to application, during post-emergence of soybeans, of five B. subtilis BV02 doses (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 4.0 L c.p. ha-1). The second factor corresponded to association or not with a copper-based product. The additional treatment consisted of applying the fungicide association [azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr] + mancozeb. In the laboratory experiment, germination of Phakopsora pachyrhizi uredospores in Elisa plates was evaluated in a completely randomized design with eight replicates. Treatments were the same as those adopted in the field experiment, except for the chemical fungicide, since mancozeb was not added to the sprayed broth. Increasing doses of B. subtilis BV02, applied alone, provided reductions in Asian soybean rust severity, and this behavior was not observed when it was applied in association with the copper-based product. Considering the association between B. subtilis BV02 and the copper-based product, the best Asian rust control results were found with doses equal or inferior to 1.0 L c.p. ha-1. Soybean yield was superior to that of the treatment containing fungicides with the use of B. subtilis BV02 alone (1.0 and 2.0 L c.p. ha-1), with application of only a copper-based product and with the combination of this micronutrient with B. subtilis BV02 (2.0 L c.p. ha-1).

RESUMO O fungo causador da ferrugem asiática na soja, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, apresenta resistência cruzada e múltipla aos três grupos químicos (triazóis, estrobilurinas e carboxamidas) de fungicidas sítio-específicos. Este fato torna evidente a necessidade da implementação de estratégias para o manejo de prevenção da resistência. Uma alternativa pode ser a utilização de microrganismos com capacidade de interferir no desenvolvimento de patógenos, bem como atuarem como indutores da resistência das plantas. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia de produto biológico à base de Bacillus subtilis BV02 isolado ou associado à produto à base de cobre no controle de ferrugem asiática, bem como desempenho agronômico da soja. Para tanto, foram instalados dois experimentos, sendo um no campo e outro em laboratório. Para o experimento conduzido em campo, o delineamento utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, estando os tratamentos dispostos em arranjo fatorial (5x2)+1, com quatro repetições. O primeiro fator correspondeu a aplicação, em pós-emergência da soja, de cinco doses de B. subtilis BV02 (0, 0,5, 1,0, 2,0 ou 4,0 L p.c. ha-1). O segundo fator correspondeu a associação ou não com produto à base de cobre. O tratamento adicional consistiu na aplicação da associação entre os fungicidas [azoxystrobina + benzovindiflupir] + mancozebe. No experimento em laboratório foi avaliada a germinação dos uredósporos de P. pachyrhizi em placas Elisa, no delineamento inteiramente casualizado com oito repetições. Foram utilizados os mesmos tratamentos do experimento do campo, diferenciando-se apenas o fungicida químico, o qual não foi adicionado mancozebe a calda aplicada. O aumento de dose de B. subtilis BV02, aplicado isoladamente, proporcionou reduções na severidade de ferrugem, não sendo visualizado este comportamento quando associado ao produto à base de cobre. Para a associação entre B. subtilis BV02 e produto à base de cobre, os melhores resultados para o controle de ferrugem asiática foram visualizados em doses iguais ou inferiores a 1,0 L p.c. ha-1. A produtividade da soja foi superior ao tratamento contendo fungicidas com a utilização de B. subtilis BV02 isolado (1,0 e 2,0 L p.c. ha-1), com aplicação apenas de produto à base de cobre e com utilização deste micronutriente em associação ao B. subtilis BV02 (2,0 L p.c. ha-1).

Resumo Introdução A relação entre a intensidade da apneia obstrutiva do sono e alterações esqueléticas da face e do hioide em crianças é pouco explorada na literatura. Objetivo Avaliar se a intensidade da apneia obstrutiva do sono correlaciona-se às alterações craniofaciais e ao posicionamento do osso hioide em crianças em fase de dentição mista. Método Foram submetidas 76 crianças entre 7 e 10 anos à avaliação otorrinolaringológica, polissonografia e avaliação ortodôntica, inclusive cefalometria. Os participantes foram divididos em 3 grupos: grupo 1 com ronco primário, grupo 2 com apneia obstrutiva do sono leve e grupo 3 com apneia obstrutiva do sono moderada/grave. Foram analisadas medidas cefalométricas da face e do osso hioide. Essas medidas foram comparadas entre si dentro dos diferentes grupos por teste t de Student não pareado. Além disso, essas medidas foram correlacionadas com a variável índice de apneias obstrutivas e hipopneias do paciente através do teste de correlação de Pearson. Resultados Das 76 crianças, 14 constituíram o grupo 1, ronco primário; 46 o grupo 2, apneia obstrutiva do sono leve; e 16 o grupo 3, apneia obstrutiva do sono moderada/grave. Não se observou diferença significante entre os grupos para as variáveis craniofaciais. Observou-se maior distância do osso hioide ao plano mandibular nos dois grupos com apneia obstrutiva do sono quando comparado ao ronco primário (p < 0,05). Entre os dois subgrupos da apneia obstrutiva do sono, os pacientes com doença moderada ou grave apresentaram distância horizontal entre o hioide e a parede posterior da faringe significantemente menor (p < 0,05), quando comparados aos grupos com apneia obstrutiva do sono leve. Observamos ainda correlação significantemente positiva entre índice de apneias obstrutivas e hipopneias e a distância do hioide ao plano mandibular (p < 0,05) e significantemente negativa entre índice de apneias obstrutivas e hipopneias e distância horizontal do hioide com a parede posterior da faringe (p < 0,01). Conclusão Não observamos relação da apneia obstrutiva do sono com alterações lineares laterais da face. Em contraste, existe relação direta entre a gravidade da apneia obstrutiva do sono e a posição inferior e posterior do osso hioide em crianças entre 7 e 10 anos.

Abstract Introduction The association between the intensity of obstructive sleep apnea and skeletal alterations in the face and hyoid bone is still scarcely addressed in the literature. Objective To evaluate whether the intensity of obstructive sleep apnea is associated with craniofacial alterations and the position of the hyoid bone in children with mixed dentition. Methods 76 children aged 7 to 10 years old were examined by otorhinolaryngological evaluation, polysomnography, and orthodontic assessment, including cephalometry. The participants were divided in 3 groups: primary snoring, mild obstructive sleep apnea and moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. Cephalometric measures of the face and hyoid bone were assessed. These measures were compared among the different groups by unpaired Student's t test. Moreover, these measures were correlated with the patient's obstructive apnea and hypopnea index variable using Pearson's correlation test. Results Of the 76 children, 14 belonged to group 1, with primary snoring; 46 to group 2, with mild obstructive sleep apnea; and 16 to group 3, with moderate-severe obstructive sleep apnea. There was no difference between the groups regarding the craniofacial variables. Children with obstructive sleep apnea showed a longer distance from the hyoid bone to the mandibular plane when compared to the primary snoring group (p < 0.05). Between the two obstructive sleep apnea subgroups, patients with moderate or severe disease showed significantly shorter horizontal distance between the hyoid bone and the posterior pharyngeal wall (p < 0.05), when compared to the groups with mild obstructive sleep apnea. We also observed a significant positive correlation between obstructive apnea and hypopnea index and the distance from the hyoid to the mandibular plane (p < 0.05) as well as a significant negative association between obstructive apnea and hypopnea index and the horizontal distance from the hyoid to the posterior pharyngeal wall (p < 0.01). Conclusion We did not observe any association between obstructive sleep apnea and linear lateral alterations of the face. In contrast, there is a direct association between obstructive sleep apnea severity and the inferior and posterior position of the hyoid bone in children aged 7 to 10 years old.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Currently, not much is known about the interactions between voice and growth hormone (GH). We have described large kindred with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) due to a GHRH receptor mutation, resulting in severe short stature and high-pitched voice. These IGHD individuals have little interest in GH treatment, as they consider themselves “short long-lived people”, rather than patients. Interestingly, they report normal general quality of life, but they rate their Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) as low. Here, we assessed the social and auditory-perceptual impacts of artistic-intervention voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) and choral singing, on their voices. Material and methods: Seventeen GH-naïve adult IGHD individuals were enrolled in a single-arm interventional pre-post study with 13 weekly sessions of choir singing over 90 days. Outcome measures were V-RQOL scores, self-assessment of voice, and auditory-perceptual analysis (GRBAS scale, G: grade of the severity of dysphonia; R: roughness; B: breathiness; A: asthenia; and S: strain). Results: Marked improvements in total (p = 0.0001), physical (p = 0.0002), and socioemotional (p = 0.0001) V-RQOL scores and in self-assessment of voice (p = 0.004) were found. The general grades of vocal deviation (p = 0.0001), roughness (p = 0.0001), breathiness (p = 0.0001) and strain (p = 0.0001) exhibited accentuated reductions. Conclusions: Voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises and choral training improved social impact and perceptual voice assessments in IGHD subjects and markedly improved their voice-related quality of life. This is particularly important in a setting where GH replacement therapy is not widely accepted.

Flow-accelerated corrosion has been studied by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques and rotating cage (RC) autoclave tests according to ASTM G170. This study evaluated through CFD and laboratory tests the influence of RC geometry and baffles on the wall shear stress (τw) proposed by the aforementioned standard. The experimental were performed at 120 °C and 2 angular velocities (500 and 800 rpm) during 25 h in a solution with 600 mg/L of Cl- ions and 10-3 mol/L of sodium thiosulfate. Corrosion rates were obtained by ASTM G31 and the surfaces were evaluated by OM and XRD. Corrosion rate values and XRD analyses showed divergence between samples in different positions in the RC and between distinct regions in the same sample. The numerical simulations and the experimental tests showed a great influence of the baffles on τw. The conservatism in the values obtained with this technique is caused by excessive corrosion close to the samples edges and the non-uniformity of τw on the internal samples surfaces. Thus, the main conclusion of the study is related to the importance of better knowledge on experimental methodology and mathematical approximations for updating the criterion for the correct τw calculation on sample surfaces.

RESUMO Objetivou-se estudar o efeito do ômega 3 e da vitamina B12 no espermograma, na histomorfometria dos órgãos reprodutivos e na temperaturas do corpo com termografia infravermelha em ratos Wistar. Utilizaram-se 16 ratos, em quatro grupos (n=4), que receberam injeções diárias por 30 dias, sendo: grupo controle - solução salina; grupo ômega 3 - óleo de peixe 1g/kg; grupo B12 - vitamina B12 3µg; e grupo ômega 3 + B12 - óleo de peixe 1g/kg e vitamina B12 3µg. Imagens termográficas de áreas do corpo foram obtidas. No 30º dia, os ratos foram sacrificados e realizaram-se as análises de morfologia espermática e histomorfometria. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e ao teste de Tukey a 5%. A temperatura da superfície do escroto foi superior no grupo B12 (P<0,05). Não houve diferenças entre grupos (P>0,05) para temperaturas do globo ocular. Houve correlação entre temperatura da superfície do escroto e porcentagem de gota citoplasmática distal (P=0,678). A elevação da temperatura do escroto resulta no aumento da porcentagem de gotas citoplasmáticas distais. A temperatura do globo ocular não sofre influência significativa do ômega 3 e da vitamina B12. O ômega 3 reduz o epitélio seminífero, e a vitamina B12 minimiza esse efeito.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to study the effect of Omega 3 and vitamin B12 on spermogram, histomorphometry of reproductive organs and body temperature with infrared thermography in Wistar rats. Sixteen rats were used in four groups (n= 4) who received daily injections for 30 days. Control Group - saline solution; Group Omega 3 - fish oil 1g/kg; Group B12 - vitamin B12 3μg and Group Omega 3 + B12 - fish oil 1g/kg and vitamin B12 3μg. Thermographic images of body were obtained. On the 30th day the rats were sacrificed and analyzes of sperm morphology and histomorphometry were performed. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test at 5%. The surface temperature of the scrotum was higher in group B12 (P< 0.05). There were no differences between groups (P> 0.05) for eyeball temperatures. There was a correlation between scrotal temperature and distal cytoplasmic droplet (P= 0.678). Elevation of scrotum temperature results in an increase in the percentage of distal cytoplasmic droplets. The temperature of the eyeball is not significantly influenced by Omega 3 and vitamin B12. Omega 3 reduces the seminiferous epithelium and vitamin B12 minimizes this effect.

Tendon rupture is a very frequent accident involving average people and high-performance athletes. Clinical studies describe tendon recovery as a painful and slow process involving different biochemical and histological events. Ascorbic acid (AA) is a potent antioxidant as well as an important cofactor for collagen synthesis. In the current study, we evaluated if local treatment with AA is able to promote tendon repair in tenotomized rats. Animals were submitted to Achilles tendon rupture followed by surgical suture. Control and AA groups received in loco injection of saline solution (0.9% NaCl) and 30 mM AA, respectively. Histological and functional recovery of Achilles tendon tissue was evaluated at 7, 14, and 21 days post-surgery. Hematoxylin/eosin staining and collagen fluorescence analysis showed intense disarrangement of tendon tissue in the saline group. Tenotomized animals also showed hypercellularity in tendon tissue compared with non-tenotomized animals. The Achilles functional index (AFI) showed a significant decrease of tendon functionality in tenotomized animals at 7, 14, and 21 days post-surgery. AA accelerated tissue organization and the recovery of function of the Achilles tendons. The beneficial effect of AA treatment was also observed in the organization of the collagen network. Data presented in the current work showed that in loco treatment with AA accelerated the recovery of injured Achilles tendon post-surgery.

ABSTRACT The needle test (NT) is a point-of-care test developed in Brazil to evaluate the Phosphorus (P) status in cattle. Based on bone resistance, the NT is a very inexpensive method which allows the diagnosis of any degree of P deficiency in a fast and simple way in vivo and directly on farm. The NT measures three levels of resistance in the transverse process (TP) of the lumbar vertebrae: a) TP that are impenetrable and result in warping of the needle (P healthy animals); b) TP offering some resistance to the penetration (animals with subclinical P deficiency); and c) TP which has minimal resistance to penetration (clinical P deficiency). This manuscript presents results from a series of case studies to evaluate the hypothesis that the NT could be used to assess P status in cattle and assesses the usefulness of results to support decision making on mineral supplementation strategies for grazing cattle. The NT was able to detect the changes in the resistance patterns of the TP, as there was reduction or elevation of P levels in the mineral mixtures. The NT was useful to assist in decision-making for adoption of mineral supplementation strategies better suited for each farm, helping farmers to save money and avoid unnecessary waste of P.

RESUMO: A avaliação histopatológica hepática de 33 suínos abatidos para consumo humano na região amazônica, previamente testados para infecção pelo vírus da hepatite E (HEV) por sorologia e técnicas moleculares, foi realizada em três grupos: Grupo 1, animais negativos para HEV-RNA e anti-HEV IgG (n=10); Grupo 2, positivos para HEV-RNA (n=13); e Grupo 3, positivos para anti-HEV IgG (n=10). O grupo 2 apresentou diferenças estatísticas significantes entre os grupos em relação à presença de atividade lobular (P=0,007), hepatite periportal de interface (P=0,004), inflamação portal (P= 0.028) e atividade lobular acompanhada por inflamação portal e periportal de interface (P=0,001). A detecção imunohistoquímica do HEV foi realizada e três de seis amostras do Grupo 2 foram positivas. Suínos naturalmente infectados pelo genótipo 3 do HEV apresentam lesões necroinflamatórias no fígado similares a lesão em humanos. A histopatologia hepática demonstrou ser importante no diagnóstico de infecção ativa e assintomática por HEV em suínos abatidos para consumo humano, pois as lesões no fígado apresentaram perfis diferenciados de acordo com o diagnóstico sorológico e molecular da infecção e, neste sentido, a histopatologia e imunohistoquímica podem representar importantes ferramentas complementares de diagnóstico.

ABSTRACT: Histopathological evaluation of liver from 33 pigs slaughtered for human consumption in Amazon region, previously tested by serology and molecular techniques for hepatitis E virus infection (HEV), was analysed in three groups: Group 1, negative for both HEV-RNA and anti-HEV IgG (n=10); Group 2, positive for HEV-RNA (n=13); Group 3, positive for anti-HEV IgG (n=10). Group 2 showed a significant difference among the groups for liver lesions such as lobular activity (P=0.007), periportal interface hepatitis (P=0.004), portal inflammation (P=0.028) hepatitis with lobular, portal and periportal interface activity (P=0.001). HEV detection by immunohistochemistry was performed and 3 of 6 samples of group 2 were positive. Pigs naturally infected by HEV genotype 3 present microscopic necroinflammatory liver lesions similar to HEV in humans. Liver histopathology showed be important in the diagnosis of active asymptomatic HEV infection in pigs slaughtered for human consumption because hepatic liver lesions may present distinct profiles according to molecular and serological diagnosis and in this sense, histopathology and immunohistochemistry may be an important complementary diagnostic tool.

Attention and emotion have a positive impact on memory formation, which is related to the activation of the noradrenergic system in the brain. The hippocampus and amygdala are fundamental structures in memory acquisition, which is modulated by noradrenaline through the noradrenergic receptors. Pharmacological studies suggest that memory acquisition depends on the action of both the β3 (β3-AR) and β2 (β2-AR) receptor subtypes. However, the use of animal models with specific knockout for the β3-AR receptor only (β3-ARKO) allows researchers to more accurately assess its role in memory formation processes. In the present study, we evaluated short- and long-term memory acquisition capacity in β3-ARKO mice and wild-type mice at approximately 60 days of age. The animals were submitted to the open field test, the elevated plus maze, object recognition, and social preference. The results showed that the absence of the β3-AR receptor caused no impairment in locomotion and did not cause anxious behavior, but it caused significant impairment of short- and long-term memory compared to wild-type animals. We also evaluated the expression of genes involved in memory consolidation. The mRNA levels for GLUT3, a glucose transporter expressed in the central nervous system, were significantly reduced in the amygdala, but not in the hippocampus of the β3-ARKO animals. Our results showed that β3-AR was involved in the process of acquisition of declarative memory, and its action may be due to the facilitation of glucose absorption in the amygdala.

ABSTRACT This study assessed the protective effect of the carotenoid bixin and annatto seeds against possible nephrotoxicity induced with a single peritoneal administration of pharmacological cisplatin in male Wistar rats. After 48 h, the blood cell differential count showed a significant reduction in neutrophil counts in rats that received a diet rich in bixin when compared to the group that received only cisplatin. The use of cisplatin led to an increase in kidney weight. The carotenoid bixin attenuated renal injury, characterized by increased polymorphonuclear infiltration. No protective effect was observed with respect to Annatto. These results demonstrate the role of toxic cisplatin and suggest that bixin affords a protective effect against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in adult Wistar rats.

RESUMO Este trabalho objetivou pesquisar as plantas medicinais referenciadas por raizeiros do município de Jataí-GO, evidenciando o Valor de Uso Reportado (VUR) e a conexão com os níveis filogenéticos atuais. Com cerca de 200 anos de história, Jataí localiza-se no Planalto Central do Brasil, Sudoeste de Goiás (17°52’53’’S e 51°42’52’’W), tendo atualmente, como principal fonte de renda o agronegócio. Para a seleção dos raizeiros e coleta dos dados aplicou-se o método bola de neve e a técnica de entrevistas semiestruturadas. Determinou-se a etnoespécie, parte usada, uso, modo de preparo, sintomas / doenças relacionando aos sistemas corporais. Foram reportadas 515 referências etnobotânicas para 112 etnoespécies principalmente dos clados Fabídeas, Lamídeas, e Campanulídeas. Sobressaíram as etnoespécies Pé-de-perdiz (Croton antisyphilliticus), Sangra-dágua (C. urucurana), Pau-terra-de-folha-larga (Qualea grandiflora), Erva-de-Santa Maria (Chenopodium album), Amaro-leite (Operculina alata), Algodãozinho-do-campo (Cochlospermum regium), Cavalinha (Equisetum hiemale) e Jaborandi (Piper aduncum), com VUR maior que 10. Os sistemas corporais mais importantes com relação ao número de etnoespécies relatadas foram respiratório, digestivo, circulatório e tegumentar. As etnoespécies mais versáteis em uso nos sistemas corporais foram Copaíba (Copaifera langsdorffii), Pé-de-perdiz (Croton antisyphiliticus), Cavalinha (Equisetum hiemale), Alecrim (Rosmarinus officinalis) e Fruta-de-lobo (Solanum paniculatum). A prática da medicina tradicional em Jataí evidencia a conexão entre a escolha de plantas e os níveis filogenéticos derivados. Algumas destas etnoespécies estão na listagem de plantas medicinais que o Ministério da Saúde do Brasil escolheu para a realização de monografias, fato que fortalece o valor do conhecimento do uso da flora nas práticas da medicina tradicional.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to research medicinal plants referenced by “raizeiros” from Jataí-GO, showing the Reported Use Value (RUV) and connection with current phylogenetic levels. With nearly 200 years of history, Jataí is located in the Central Plateau of Brazil, Southwest Goiás (17°52’53 ‘’S and 51°42’52’’W), where the main source of income is agribusiness. For the “raizeiros” selection and data collection the snowball method and semi-structured interview techniques were applied. The most important bodily systems in the number of reported plants were respiratory, digestive, circulatory and integumentary. The most versatile, useful plant systems were Copaíba (Copaiferalangsdorffii), Pé-de-perdiz (Crotonantisyphiliticus), Cavalinha (Equisetumhiemale), Rosemary (Rosmarinusofficinalis) and Fruita-de-lobo (Solanumpaniculatum).The practice of traditional medicine in Jataí reveals the link between the choice of plants and derived phylogenetic levels. Many referenced species are used medicinally in the Cerrado, including some that are part of the national health care system’s list, for the realization of monographs, which strengthen the knowledge of these traditional medicine practices in Goiás.

Com o objetivo de determinar a exigência de lisina digestível para poedeiras semipesadas no período de 50 a 66 semanas de idade, foi realizado experimento utilizando-se 150 poedeiras Shaver Brown, distribuídas em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos (níveis de lisina digestível: 0,79; 0,82; 0,85; 0,88 e 0,91%), seis repetições e cinco aves por unidade experimental. Foram avaliados a produção de ovos, peso médio e a massa de ovos, consumo de ração e de lisina, conversão alimentar por massa e por dúzia de ovos, gravidade específica, unidade Haugh, o índice de gema e albúmen, porcentagem de albúmen, gema e casca. O consumo de ração, a conversão alimentar por massa e dúzia de ovos, a produção, o peso e a massa de ovos não foram influenciados (P>0,05) pelos níveis de lisina digestível. Houve aumento linear no consumo de lisina (P<0,01) com o incremento dos níveis desse aminoácido nas rações. As porcentagens de albúmen, gema e casca não foram influenciadas (P>0,05) pelos níveis de lisina digestível estudados. Os níveis de lisina influenciaram de forma quadrática (P>0,05) a unidade Haugh e o índice de albúmen, sendo estimados os níveis de 0,884 e 0,868% de lisina digestível, respectivamente. Para o índice de gema, a associação do modelo quadrático ao Linear Response Plateau (LRP) estimou o nível de 0,903% de lisina digestível. Quando o objetivo é maximizar a qualidade interna dos ovos, recomenda-se o nível dietético de 0,884%, 0,868% e 0,903% de lisina digestível para unidade Haugh, índice de albúmen e índice de gema, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT With the objective of determining the requirement of digestible lysine for brown-egg laying hens in the period from 50 to 66 weeks of age, an experiment was carried out using 150 Shaver Brown laying hens, distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (digestible lysine levels: 0.79, 0.82, 0.85, 0.88 and 0.91%), six replications and five birds per experimental unit. The production of eggs, weight and the egg mass, feed intake and lysine, feed mass and dozen eggs, specific gravity, Haugh unit, yolk and albumen index, percentage of albumen, yolk and bark were analyzed. Feed intake, feed conversion per dozen of eggs s and per egg mass, egg production, egg weight and egg mass were not influenced (P>0.05) by digestible lysine levels. There was a linear increase in lysine intake (P<0.01) with increasing levels of this amino acid in the diets. The albumen, yolk and shell percentages were not influenced (P>0.05) by studied digestible lysine levels. Lysine levels had a quadratic effect (P>0.05) Haugh unit and albumen index being estimated as 0.884 and 0.868% digestible lysine levels, respectively. For yolk index, the association of the quadratic model to Linear Response Plateau (LRP) estimated the level of 0.903% digestible lysine. When the aim is to maximize the internal egg quality, a dietary level of 0.884%, 0.868% and 0.903% digestible lysine for Haugh unit, albumen index and yolk index, respectively is recommended.

Os objetivos do estudo foram identificar a presença de microrganismos nos condutos auditivos dos cães através dos exames citológico e microbiológico, assim como avaliar a associação destes à otoacaríase e seus sinais clínicos. O diagnóstico da infestação por Otodectes cynotis foi realizado através de otoscopia bilateral e pela coleta de material e visualização do parasito sob microscópio esterioscópico, constituindo o exame parasitológico. Outras coletas de secreção otológica de cada orelha foram realizadas para confecção de lâminas para a citologia e para o isolamento microbiológico, sendo este último material coletado através de "swab" estéril. Dos 250 animais examinados, em 15 (6%) foi identificado o ácaro O. cynotis.Observou-se associação entre a presença do parasito e a ocorrência de otite clínica externa caracterizada especialmente por eritema auricular (P<0,001) e a produção excessiva de secreção otológica (P=0,0016), assim como a observação, pelos proprietários, de prurido ótico nos cães (P<0,001). Sugere-se a possibilidade de essas associações serem efeito da infestação. Houve também a associação (P<0,01) entre a otoacaríase e a ocorrência de microrganismos nos dois condutos auditivos de cada animal, detectados através da citologia. No entanto, não houve associação (P=0,04 e p=0,07) entre a presença do ácaro O. cynotis e a ocorrência de microrganismos no exame microbiológico das orelhas direita e esquerda, respectivamente.

ABSTRACT The goals of this study were to identify microorganisms in dogs' ear canals through cytological and microbiological examination, and evaluate their association with otoacariasis and its clinical signs. Otodectes cynotis infestation diagnosis was achieved by bilateral otoscopy, and by parasite viewing on cerumem under stereoscopic microscope, representing the parasitological exam. Ear discharge was also collected from each canal to fix cytology slides and for microbiological isolation, but this last sample was collected with sterile swab. Among the 250 studied animals, 15 (6%) had ear mites. There was an association between the parasite and external clinical otitis specially as established by auricular erythema (P<0,001) and excessive production of ear discharge (P=0,0016), as well as ear pruritus observed by the owners (P<0,001). It has been suggested that these associations can be an effect of the infestations. There was also an association (P<0,01) between otoacariasis and microorganisms detected by cytological exam in both ear canals of each dog. However, there was no association (P=0,04 e P=0,07) between the presence of ear mite and microorganisms detected by microbiological exam of right and left ears.

A flora do cerrado é composta por espécies acumuladoras e não acumuladoras de alumínio (Al), coexistentes em solos ácidos, ricos em Al e com baixa fertilidade. Apesar da coexistência desses grupos funcionais, sua importância ecológica e suas estratégias biológicas são pouco conhecidas. Nós estudamos os padrões fenológicos de brotação foliar de ambos os grupos ao longo do ano, as concentrações foliares de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Al, flavonoides totais e polifenóis e a área foliar específica (AFE) em folhas jovens e maduras, dentro e entre os grupos. Para as espécies acumuladoras de Al as brotações foliares foram distribuídas ao longo do ano, com maior intensidade entre maio e setembro; para as espécies não acumuladoras de Al observamos um pico de brotação durante a transição das estações seca e chuvosa. No entanto, estes comportamentos não podem ser associados às estratégias ligadas ao acúmulo foliar de metabólitos secundários por estes grupos funcionais. As espécies acumuladoras de Al apresentaram menores concentrações de nutrientes foliares, enquanto que as não acumuladoras concentraram mais macronutrientes e produziram folhas com alta AFE desde a fase juvenil. Isso demonstra que o aumento de AFE é mais lento nas espécies acumuladoras de Al, que devem atingir valores de AFE comparáveis ao resto da comunidade apenas na estação úmida, quando a captação de luz é importante para o crescimento de novos ramos.

The cerrado's flora comprises aluminum-(Al) accumulating and non-accumulating plants, which coexist on acidic and Al-rich soils with low fertility. Despite their existence, the ecological importance or biological strategies of these functional groups have been little explored. We evaluated the leaf flushing patterns of both groups throughout a year; leaf concentrations of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Al, total flavonoids and polyphenols; as well as the specific leaf area (SLA) on young and mature leaves within and between the groups. In Al-accumulating plants, leaf flushed throughout the year, mainly in May and September; for non-accumulating plants, leaf flushing peaked at the dry-wet seasons transition. However, these behaviors could not be associated with strategies for building up concentrations of defense compounds in leaves of any functional groups. Al-accumulating plants showed low leaf nutrient concentrations, while non-accumulating plants accumulated more macronutrients and produced leaves with high SLA since the juvenile leaf phase. This demonstrates that the increase in SLA is slower in Al-accumulating plants that are likely to achieve SLA values comparable to the rest of the plant community only in the wet season, when sunlight capture is important for the growth of new branches.

Liver fibrosis occurring as an outcome of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) can precede the development of cirrhosis. We investigated the effects of sorafenib in preventing liver fibrosis in a rodent model of NASH. Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a choline-deficient high-fat diet and exposed to diethylnitrosamine for 6 weeks. The NASH group (n=10) received vehicle and the sorafenib group (n=10) received 2.5 mg·kg-1·day-1 by gavage. A control group (n=4) received only standard diet and vehicle. Following treatment, animals were sacrificed and liver tissue was collected for histologic examination, mRNA isolation, and analysis of mitochondrial function. Genes related to fibrosis (MMP9, TIMP1, TIMP2), oxidative stress (HSP60, HSP90, GST), and mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC1α) were evaluated by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Liver mitochondrial oxidation activity was measured by a polarographic method, and cytokines by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Sorafenib treatment restored mitochondrial function and reduced collagen deposition by nearly 63% compared to the NASH group. Sorafenib upregulated PGC1α and MMP9 and reduced TIMP1 and TIMP2 mRNA and IL-6 and IL-10 protein expression. There were no differences in HSP60, HSP90 and GST expression. Sorafenib modulated PGC1α expression, improved mitochondrial respiration and prevented collagen deposition. It may, therefore, be useful in the treatment of liver fibrosis in NASH.
