ABSTRACT Piptocephalis includes mycoparasitic fungi, mainly targeting mucoralean species. Until now, there has been no compilation of data on the taxonomy and geographic distribution of Piptocephalis, which is a barrier to the proper identification of species of this genus by taxonomists. The present study provides an overview of Piptocephalis with taxonomic and occurrence data, in addition to reporting P. graefenhanii and P. xenophila for the first time in South America. Both species were observed parasitizing Mucor spp. The P. graefenhanii was observed growing on paca dung and P. xenophila was observed on guinea-pig dung in Recife, northeastern Brazil. Species of the genus Pandanus are easily found in urban areas and are characterized by the presence of thickened aerial roots, originating from the stem. To verify how thickening occurs, roots of P. utilis Bory, P. baptisti Hort., P. amaryllifolius Roxb e P. veitchii Hort samples of the roots were collected in urban areas, fixed and processed according to the usual technique for analysis under a light microscope. For all species, thickening occurs in the acropetal direction, through the formation and expansion of spaces of intercellular spaces in the cortex and in the vascular cylinder, meristematic activity of the proendodermis, division and increase in volume of the parenchymatic cells of the cortex and the vascular cylinder and meristematic activity of the pericycle.

Resumo O biofilme subgengival periodontopatogênico é o principal agente etiológico da periodontite. Assim, a pesquisa de antimicrobianos como adjuvantes para o tratamento periodontal na literatura é intensa. Cloreto de cetilpiridínio (CPC) é um agente antimicrobiano comumente usado em enxaguatórios bucais. No entanto não foram encontrados na literatura estudos avaliando os efeitos do CPC em um modelo complexo de biofilme. Portanto, o objetivo deste artigo é avaliar as propriedades antimicrobianas do cloreto de cetilpiridinio 0,075% em um modelo de biofilme subgengival multiespécie in vitro. O biofilme subgengival composto por 31 espécies relacionadas à periodontite foi formado por 7 dias, utilizando o dispositivo calgary. Os tratamentos com CPC e clorexidina (CHX) 0,12% (controle positivo) foram realizados 2x/dia, por 1 min, do dia 3 até o final do período experimental, totalizando 8 tratamentos. Após 7 dias de formação do biofilme, a atividade metabólica do biofilme foi avaliada por reação colorimétrica e a composição microbiana dos biofilmes por hibridização DNA-DNA. A análise estatística foi realizada usando ANOVA com dados transformados via BOX-COX seguido do teste de Dunnett. Tanto o CPC como a CHX reduziram a atividade metabólica do biofilme em aproximadamente 60% e apresentaram atividade antimicrobiana contra 13 espécies diferentes. Especificamente, apenas os níveis de F.n. Vicentii e P. gingivalis foram reduzidos somente pelo tratamento com a CHX enquanto apenas o CPC reduziu A. odontolyticus e A. israelli. O CPC foi tão eficaz quanto o CHX como antimicrobiano através de biofilme subgengival complexo multiespecífico in vitro. No entanto, futuros estudos usando modelos in vivo de doença periodontal experimental devem ser realizados para comprovar tal efeito.

Abstract Periodontopathogenic subgingival biofilm is the main etiological agent of periodontitis. Thus, a search for antimicrobials as adjuvant for periodontal treatment in the literature is intense. Cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) is a well-known antimicrobial agent commonly used in mouthrinses. However, CPC effects on a complex biofilm model were not found over the literature. Therefore, the aim of this manuscript is to evaluate 0.075% CPC antimicrobial properties in a multispecies subgingival biofilm model in vitro. The subgingival biofilm composed by 31 species related to periodontitis was formed for 7 days, using the calgary device. The treatments with CPC and chlorhexidine (CHX) 0.12% (as positive control) were performed 2x/day, for 1 min, from day 3 until the end of experimental period, totaling 8 treatments. After 7 days of biofilm formation, biofilm metabolic activity was evaluated by a colorimetric reaction and biofilms microbial composition by DNA-DNA hybridization. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA with data transformed via BOX-COX followed by Dunnett post-hoc. Both CPC and CHX reduced biofilm metabolic activity in 60% and presented antimicrobial activity against 13 different species. Specifically, only CHX reduced levels of F.n. vicentii and P. gingivalis while only CPC reduced A. odontolyticus and A. israelli. CPC was as effective as CHX as antimicrobial through in vitro complex multispecies subgingival biofilm. However, future studies using in vivo models of experimental periodontal disease should be performed to prove such effect.

RESUMO As indústrias de cacau e óleo de dendê no estado da Bahia, Brasil, geram grandes quantidades de resíduos lignocelulósicos que podem ser reciclados na formulação de substratos para o cultivo de cogumelos comestíveis. Pleurotus ostreatus ou cogumelo ostra é o segundo cogumelo mais cultivado no mundo por apresentar características gastronômicas, nutricionais e medicinais muito apreciadas. Este estudo avaliou o crescimento micelial vertical, a eficiência biológica, a produção e a composição nutricional de P. ostreatus produzido em substratos formulados com a combinação de resíduos do processamento de frutos de dendê (mesocarpo do fruto de dendê – MFD) e de amêndoas de cacau (tegumento de amêndoas de cacau – TAC). Os substratos foram formulados com as seguintes proporções de MFD e TAC (%/%): S1: 86,4/9,6; S2: 76,8/19,2; S3: 67,2/28,8; S4: 57,6/38,4 e S5: 48,0/48,0. Os substratos também receberam 3% de carvão e 1% de carbonato de cálcio. Os substratos S1, S2, S3 e S4 foram superiores quanto ao crescimento micelial vertical. S2 promoveu os melhores resultados para eficiência biológica (148,8%) e produção (560.5 g·kg-1). Os cogumelos produzidos em todos os substratos apresentaram valores nutricionais promissores. Entretanto, os cogumelos produzidos com o substrato S2 apresentaram o maior conteúdo de proteína bruta. De modo geral, S1 é o substrato recomendado por resultar na maior produção de cogumelos ricos em nutrientes. A produção de P. ostreatus em substratos compostos por MFD e TAC representa uma boa alternativa para a reciclagem desses resíduos com potenciais benefícios econômicos e ecológicos para as regiões produtoras de dendê e cacau.

ABSTRACT The cocoa and palm oil agro-industries active in the state of Bahia, Brazil, generate high quantities of lignocellulosic wastes that could be recycled through their use in the formulation of substrates to cultivate edible mushrooms. Pleurotus ostreatus, also known as oyster mushroom, is the second most cultivated mushroom in the world due to its highly appreciated gastronomic, nutritional, and medicinal characteristics. This work evaluated the vertical mycelium growth, biological efficiency, mushroom yield, and nutritional composition of P. ostreatus produced in substrates formulated with a combination of palm oil fruit mesocarp (POFM) and cocoa almond peels (CAP) processing wastes. The substrates were formulated with the following POFM/CAP proportions (%/%): S1 – 86.4/9.6; S2 – 76.8/19.2; S3 – 67.2/28.8; S4 – 57.6/38.4, and S5 – 48.0/48.0. Substrates also received 3% powdered charcoal and 1% calcium carbonate. Substrates S1, S2, S3, and S4 were superior for vertical mycelium growth. S2 promoted the best biological efficiency (148.8%) and yield (560.5g·kg-1).The mushrooms produced in all substrates presented good nutritional values, although mushrooms produced using the S2 presented the highest crude protein content. Overall, S1 is the recommended substrate as it results in higher yields of nutrient rich mushrooms. Production of P. ostreatus in substrates composed of POFM and CAP represents a good alternative for recycling these wastes with potential economic and ecological benefits to regions where palm oil and cocoa are grown.

RESUMO O câncer de mama é comum em mulheres, mas sua etiologia ainda não é totalmente compreendida. Vários fatores podem contribuir para sua gênese, genética, estilo de vida e meio ambiente. A melatonina pode estar envolvida no processo de câncer de mama. Portanto, o objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a influência dos níveis de melatonina no câncer de mama por meio de uma revisão sistemática e meta-análise. Realizamos uma revisão sistemática de acordo com as recomendações do Prisma. Os principais bancos de dados, Medline, Embase e Cochrane, foram consultados. Não houve restrição quanto ao ano de publicação e idioma. Os dados de revisão sistemática obtidos de abril de 2017 a setembro a 2017 foram analisados. A meta-análise foi conduzida pelo programa RevMan 5.3 fornecido pela Cochrane Collaboration. De um total de 570 artigos, nove foram incluídos nesta revisão. As análises foram conduzidas em mulheres com câncer de mama e pacientes controle, dos quais 10% e 90% estavam no período reprodutivo e após a menopausa, respectivamente. O nível mais baixo de melatonina foi encontrado em aproximadamente 55% dos estudos com câncer de mama na pós-menopausa. As meta-análises de estudos demonstraram os baixos níveis de melatonina em doentes com câncer da mama (n=963), em comparação com os pacientes de controle (n=1.332), sendo a diferença de médias entre os estudos da −3,54 (CI −6,01, −1,06). Outra diferença é demonstrada nas comparações entre pacientes fumantes, sendo a diferença da média entre 1,80 [0,97-2,63]. Nossos dados sugerem que baixos níveis de melatonina podem ser um fator de risco para câncer de mama.

SUMMARY Breast Cancer is common in women, but its etiology is not yet fully understood. Several factors may contribute to its genesis, such as genetics, lifestyle, and the environment. Melatonin may be involved in the process of breast cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of the levels of melatonin on breast cancer through a systematic review and meta-analysis. We performed a systematic review according to PRISMA recommendations. The primary databases MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane were consulted. There was no restriction on the year of publication and language. Data of systematic reviews from April 2017 to September to 2017 were analyzed. The meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software provided by the Cochrane Collaboration. From a total of 570 articles, 9 manuscripts were included in this review. They analy onzed women with breast cancer and control patients, of which 10% and 90% were in the reproductive period and after menopause, respectively. The lowest level of melatonin was found in approximately 55% of studies with breast cancer in post-menopause. The metanalyses of the studies demonstrated low levels of melatonin in breast cancer patients (n=963) compared with control patients (n= 1332), with a mean difference between the studies of −3.54 (CI −6.01, −1.06). Another difference found was in the comparison between smoking patients, with an average difference between 1.80 [0.97-2.63]. Our data suggest that low levels of melatonin might be a risk factor for breast cancer.

RESUMO Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, é uma espécie endêmica da Caatinga, se destaca pela importância nas atividades madeireira e medicinal. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito dos agentes osmóticos sacarose, sorbitol e manitol e o retardante de crescimento paclobutrazol (PBZ) na indução do crescimento mínimo in vitro de P. pyramidalis, visando o estabelecimento de técnicas alternativas para conservação ex situ da espécie. No primeiro experimento, plântulas com sete dias de idade foram inoculadas em meio WPM suplementado com quatro concentrações de sacarose (87,64, 131,46, 175,28 ou 219,10 mM) combinadas com 0,0 ou 87,64 mM de sorbitol ou manitol. No segundo experimento, essas plântulas foram inoculadas em meio WPM contendo diferentes concentrações (0,0, 1,5, 3,0, 4,5 ou 6,0 µM) de PBZ e suplementadas com 87,64 mM de sacarose. Para ambos os experimentos, foi avaliado a porcentagem de sobrevivência das plantas a cada 60 dias. Ao final de 240 dias, foram analisados o número de folhas verdes e folhas senescentes, comprimento da parte aérea e da maior raiz, e massa seca da parte aérea e da raiz. Os melhores resultados para manter a qualidade das plantas de P. pyramidalis conservadas in vitro foram obtidos em meio suplementado com 219,10 mM de sacarose isolada por até 240 dias sem subcultivo. Com relação ao PBZ, a concentração de 6,0 μM pode ser recomendada para conservação in vitro de P. pyramidalis por um período de 240 dias sem a necessidade de subcultivos.

ABSTRACT Poincianella pyramidalis (Tul.) L.P. Queiroz, is an arboreal species endemic to Brazil’s Caatinga biome and an important source of lumber and also of medicinal substances. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the osmotic agents sucrose, sorbitol and mannitol and the growth retardant paclobutrazol (PBZ) on the induction of slow growth in vitro of P. pyramidalis, seeking to establish alternative techniques for ex situ conservation of the species. In the first experiment, plantlets with seven days of age were inoculated on Woody Plant Medium (WPM) supplemented with four concentrations of sucrose (87.64, 131.46, 175.28 or 219.10 mM) combined with 0.0 or 87.64 mM sorbitol or mannitol. In the second experiment, these plantlets were inoculated on WPM medium with 0.0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 or 6.0 µM PBZ and supplemented with 87.64 mM sucrose. For both experiments, the survival percentage of the plants was evaluated every 60 days, and at the end of 240 days, the following parameters were recorded: number of green leaves and senescent leaves; length of the aerial part and longest root; and dry mass of the aerial part and roots. The best results to maintain the quality of the P. pyramidalis plants conserved in vitro were obtained on medium supplemented with 219.10 mM sucrose for up to 240 days without subculture. With respect to PBZ, the concentration of 6.0 μM can be recommended for in vitro conservation of P. pyramidalis for 240 days without the need of subculturing.

RESUMO O nematoide das lesões radiculares (Pratylenchus brachyurus) tem sido encontrado em goiabeiras, todavia, não existem informações na literatura se a referida cultura é uma hospedeira potencial ou se ocorre danos pelo parasitismo do mesmo. O objetivo desse estudo foi avaliar sob condições experimentais de casa de vegetação, o desenvolvimento das cultivares de goiabeiras Paluma, Pedro Sato, Século XXI e Tailandesa quando inoculadas com P. brachyurus. Além disso, plantas inoculadas foram comparadas com não inoculadas. As avaliações de altura, diâmetro do caule, massa fresca das partes aéreas, massa fresca das raízes, população do nematoide nas raízes, bem como o aspecto visual, foram realizadas aos seis e doze meses após a inoculação. Por meio dos resultados obtidos, as cultivares Pedro Sato, Século XXI e Tailandesa não são boas hospedeiras de P. brachyurus, todavia, Paluma é boa hospedeira. A cultivar Tailandesa apresentou o melhor desenvolvimento de diâmetro de colo, massa fresca das partes aéreas e massa fresca de raízes em relação as demais cultivares. A cultivar Paluma é suscetível e intolerante a P. brachyurus, Século XXI é resistente e intolerante a P. brachyurus, Pedro Sato é resistente e intolerante a P. brachyurus e a cultivar Tailandesa é resistente e tolerante a P. brachyurus.

ABSTRACT The root lesion nematode (Pratylenchus brachyurus) has been found in guava plants; however, there is no information in the literature about whether the crop is a potential host or is damaged due to parasitism by this nematode. The aim of this study was to evaluate, under greenhouse conditions, the development of the guava tree cultivars Paluma, Pedro Sato, Século XXI and Tailandesa inoculated with P. brachyurus. Furthermore, inoculated plants were compared with non-inoculated ones. Evaluations of height, stem diameter, fresh mass of aerial parts, fresh mass of roots, nematode population in the roots, as well as visual aspect, were performed at six and twelve months after inoculation. According to the obtained results, cultivars Pedro Sato, Século XXI and Tailandesa are not good hosts to P. brachyurus; however, Paluma is a good host. Tailandesa presented the best development of stem diameter, fresh weight of aerial parts and fresh weight of roots, relative to the other cultivars. Paluma is susceptible and intolerant to P. brachyurus; Século XXI is resistant and intolerant to P. brachyurus; Pedro Sato is resistant and intolerant to P. brachyurus, and cultivar Tailandesa is resistant and tolerant to P. brachyurus.

Abstract Objective To analyze the nursing practice environment in intensive care units. Methods This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, carried out with 209 nursing professionals of three Brazilian teaching hospitals. The nursing work environment was evaluated using the Practice Environment Scale. Data were analyzed descriptively, assuming a significance level of 5% (p<0.05). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to assess the internal consistency of the constructs. Results Nurse professionals considered unfavorable four of the five professional practice environment dimensions: nurse participation in hospital affairs, nursing foundation for quality of care, nurse manager ability, leadership and support of nurses and staffing and resources adequacy. Only the dimension of collegial nurse-physician relations presented a positive evaluation. Unfavorable characteristics of the working environment were recognized more strongly by nurses in comparison to nursing technicians. Conclusion The environment proved to be unfavorable for the practice of nursing professionals. Efforts are necessary to make the work environment more attractive to them, thus stimulating improvements in the quality and safety of care delivered to patients.

Resumen Objetivo Analizar el ambiente de la práctica de enfermería en unidades de terapia intensiva. Métodos Estudio descriptivo, de abordaje cuantitativo, realizado con 209 profesionales de enfermería de tres hospitales de enseñanza brasileños. El ambiente de la práctica de enfermería fue evaluado utilizándose la Practice Environment Scale. Datos analizados descriptivamente, asumiéndose nivel de significatividad de 5% (p<0,05). Se utilizó coeficiente Alfa de Cronbach para examinar la consistencia interna de los constructos. Resultados Los profesionales de enfermería consideran desfavorables cuatro de las cinco dimensiones del ambiente de la práctica profesional: participación de enfermeros en discusión de asuntos hospitalarios; fundamentos de enfermería orientados a calidad del cuidado; habilidad, liderazgo y soporte de coordinadores/supervisores de enfermería a los enfermeros/equipo de enfermería; y adecuación del equipo y de recursos. Solamente la dimensión relaciones entre profesionales de enfermería y médicos mostró evaluación positiva. Los enfermeros reconocieron más sólidamente atributos desfavorables en el ambiente de práctica que los auxiliares de enfermería. Conclusión El ambiente se mostró desfavorable para la práctica de los profesionales de enfermería. Son necesarios esfuerzos para que el ambiente de práctica sea más atractivo para los profesionales de enfermería, estimulando así mejoras en calidad y seguridad de la atención brindada.

Resumen Objetivo Analizar el ambiente de la práctica de enfermería en unidades de terapia intensiva. Métodos Estudio descriptivo, de abordaje cuantitativo, realizado con 209 profesionales de enfermería de tres hospitales de enseñanza brasileños. El ambiente de la práctica de enfermería fue evaluado utilizándose la Practice Environment Scale. Datos analizados descriptivamente, asumiéndose nivel de significatividad de 5% (p<0,05). Se utilizó coeficiente Alfa de Cronbach para examinar la consistencia interna de los constructos. Resultados Los profesionales de enfermería consideran desfavorables cuatro de las cinco dimensiones del ambiente de la práctica profesional: participación de enfermeros en discusión de asuntos hospitalarios; fundamentos de enfermería orientados a calidad del cuidado; habilidad, liderazgo y soporte de coordinadores/supervisores de enfermería a los enfermeros/equipo de enfermería; y adecuación del equipo y de recursos. Solamente la dimensión relaciones entre profesionales de enfermería y médicos mostró evaluación positiva. Los enfermeros reconocieron más sólidamente atributos desfavorables en el ambiente de práctica que los auxiliares de enfermería. Conclusión El ambiente se mostró desfavorable para la práctica de los profesionales de enfermería. Son necesarios esfuerzos para que el ambiente de práctica sea más atractivo para los profesionales de enfermería, estimulando así mejoras en calidad y seguridad de la atención brindada.

RESUMO A região do Parque Estadual do Espinilho, inserida nos domínios fitogeográficos da Savana Estépica Parque, ainda é pouco estudada, apesar de ser destaque na flora sulina. Características como denso estrato herbáceo e árvores isoladas configuram-na como propícia à pecuária. Objetivou-se analisar alterações florísticas e edáficas impostas pelo pastejo em duas áreas do Parque, a primeira sob pastejo e a segunda protegida por cinco anos. Foram avaliadas propriedades físicas do solo e biomassa aérea do estrato herbáceo, visando investigar relações com as principais espécies arbóreas regenerantes. Foi instalada uma unidade amostral de 2ha em ambas as áreas, compostas por 200 subunidades cada. O inventário do estrato regenerante, as coletas para análises de solo, biomassa aérea do estrato herbáceo e testes de resistência do solo à penetração foram realizados em 50 subunidades. Os resultados avaliados pelo teste t de Student demonstram que há variações entre florística e fatores ambientais aferidos entre as duas áreas. A abundância das espécies P. affinis e V. caven e as variáveis resistência do solo à penetração, densidade do solo, umidade gravimétrica e biomassa aérea do estrato herbáceo diferem significativamente. A análise exploratória de ordenação (PCoA) permite inferir que variáveis densidade do solo, resistência à penetração e abundância de espécies de V. caven apresentam maiores valores em área com pastejo, e umidade gravimétrica, biomassa aérea e abundância de P. affinis são maiores em área protegida, configurando significativas mudanças ao longo de apenas cinco anos de exclusão.

ABSTRACT Despite being prominent in flora, the region of the Parque Estadual do Espinilho located in the Pampas of southern Brazil, where dense herbaceous stratum and isolated trees make this region suitable for livestock farming, has received little attention. The objective of the study was to analyze floristic and edaphic changes imposed by livestock farming in two areas of the park, the first under livestock grazing and the second protected from grazing (livestock-excluded) for five years. We evaluated soil physical properties of and the herbaceous aboveground biomass in order to investigate relationships with key regenerating tree species. A sampling unit of 2ha was installed in both areas, each composed of 200 subunits. Inventory of regenerating trees and herbaceous aboveground biomass, soil sampling, and soil penetration resistance tests were done in 50 subunits. The results, which were evaluated by Student’s t-test, exhibited variations between the two areas in regards to floristic and environmental factors. The abundance of the P. affinis and V. caven species and the variables of soil penetration resistance, soil bulk density, gravimetric moisture and herbaceous aboveground biomass differ significantly between the two areas. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) allows to infer that variables such as soil bulk density, penetration resistance and the abundance of V. caven species exhibit higher values in the area under gazing, while gravimetric moisture, aboveground biomass and abundance of P. affinis are higher in the area under livestock-excluded, showing that significant changes occur over just five years of livestock-excluded from the area.

RESUMO: Prunus serrulata é uma espécie muito empregada na ornamentação e sua importância econômica deve-se principalmente à ocasião de sua floração. Objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade da técnica de estaquia para a propagação de P. serrulata , utilizando-se estacas caulinares provenientes de brotações do ano, bem como estimar a concentração de máxima eficiência da auxina ácido indol butírico (AIB), na promoção do enraizamento. A coleta do material vegetativo ocorreu no final da primavera. As estacas foram confeccionadas com cerca de 8±1cm de comprimento e duas folhas reduzidas a 50% de sua superfície original. Foram avaliadas 21 concentrações de AIB (0, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000, 2250, 2500, 2750, 3000, 3250, 3500, 3750, 4000, 4250, 4500, 4750 e 5000mg L-1), aplicadas na base das estacas, as quais foram acondicionadas em casa de vegetação climatizada. Após 60 dias, verificou-se um aumento gradativo do percentual de enraizamento em relação ao incremento de AIB até a concentração aproximada de 2700mg L-1, com resultados superiores a 80%. Ademais, concentrações de baixa eficiência do regulador vegetal resultaram em menor número de raízes por estaca, o que poderia comprometer a capacidade de sobrevivência das mudas em condições ambientais. Por outro lado, o descréscimo do percentual de calos pode ser um indicativo de que a formação de raízes em P. serrulata ocorra de maneira direta, sem a necessidade de formação de calos e sua posterior desdiferenciação e rediferenciação em raízes.

ABSTRACT: Prunus serrulata is a species widely used in the ornamentation and its economic importance is mainly due to the time of its flowering. The objective was to assess the feasibility of cutting technique for propagating P. serrulata , using stem cuttings from current-year shoots, and to estimate the maximum efficiency concentration of auxin indole butyric acid (IBA), in the promotion of rooting. Collection of plant material took place in late spring. Cuttings were made with about 8±1cm length and two leaves reduced to 50% of its original surface. Twenty one IBA concentrations have been assessed (0, 250, 500, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, 1750, 2000, 2250, 2500, 2750, 3000, 3250, 3500, 3750, 4000, 4250, 4500, 4750 e 5000mg L-1), applied in base of cuttings, which were placed in acclimatized greenhouse. After 60 days, there was a gradual increase in the rooting percentage compared to the increment of IBA to the approximate concentration of 2700mg L-1, with results higher than 80%. In addition, low efficiency concentrations of growth regulators have resulted in fewer roots per cutting, which could compromise the survivability of the seedlings under ambient conditions. Conversely, the decrease in the percentage of callus may be an indication that root formation in P. serrulata occurs directly, without requiring callus formation and its further de-differentiation and re-differentiation in roots.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of Carbopol gel formulations containing pilocarpine on the morphology and morphometry of the vaginal epithelium of castrated rats. METHODS: Thirty-one female Wistar-Hannover rats were randomly divided into four groups: the control Groups I (n=7, rats in persistent estrus; positive controls) and II (n=7, castrated rats, negative controls) and the experimental Groups, III (n=8) and IV (n=9). Persistent estrus (Group I) was achieved with a subcutaneous injection of testosterone propionate on the second postnatal day. At 90 days postnatal, rats in Groups II, III and IV were castrated and treated vaginally for 14 days with Carbopol gel (vehicle alone) or Carbopol gel containing 5% and 15% pilocarpine, respectively. Next, all of the animals were euthanized and their vaginas were removed for histological evaluation. A non-parametric test with a weighted linear regression model was used for data analysis (p<0.05). RESULTS: The morphological evaluation showed maturation of the vaginal epithelium with keratinization in Group I, whereas signs of vaginal atrophy were present in the rats of the other groups. Morphometric examinations showed mean thickness values of the vaginal epithelium of 195.10±12.23 μm, 30.90±1.14 μm, 28.16±2.98 μm and 29.84±2.30 μm in Groups I, II, III and IV, respectively, with statistically significant differences between Group I and the other three groups (p<0.0001) and no differences between Groups II, III and IV (p=0.0809). CONCLUSION: Topical gel formulations containing pilocarpine had no effect on atrophy of the vaginal epithelium in the castrated female rats.

ABSTRACT Blast, caused by the fungus Pyricularia oryzae, is an important disease affecting rice and wheat yield worldwide. This study investigated the cytological aspects of incompatible (non-host resistance) and compatible (host resistance) rice- (R_Po) and wheat- (W_Po) Pyricularia oryzae isolate interactions. Inoculations of rice and wheat with the R_Po and W_Po isolates of P. oryzae, respectively, were expected to be compatible interactions (host resistance), whereas inoculations of rice and wheat with the W_Po and R_Po isolates of P. oryzae, respectively, were considered to be incompatible interactions (non-host resistance). For the compatible interactions (rice-R_Po and wheat-W_Po), fungal hyphae penetrated and colonized the epidermal cells and also invaded many neighboring cells. By contrast, in the case of the incompatible interactions (rice-W_Po and wheat-R_Po), fungal hyphae were not able to penetrate nor colonize the epidermal cells, but when penetration did occur, the hyphae were restricted to the first-invaded epidermal cell. The frequency of appressorial sites exhibiting infection hyphae within the epidermal cell underlying an appressorium was greater in the case of the compatible interactions. By contrast, unsuccessful penetrations with cytoplasmic granulation occurred with high frequency in the incompatible wheat-R_Po and rice-W_Po interactions and the number of necrotic epidermal cells underlying the appressorium was low for the rice-W_Po interaction as well as for the wheat- R_Po interaction, where no symptoms of necrosis were exhibited. However, the opposite was observed for the compatible interactions. The present study presents cytological features associated with incompatible and compatible rice- and wheat-P. oryzae interactions that may be useful to studies involving variability, coevolution, diagnosis, and regulation of quarantine or even in a rice or wheat breeding program whose aim is to transfer genes involved in non-host resistance to host resistance due to similarities in downstream mechanisms.

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of Porphyromonas endodontalis, Filifactor alocis and Dialister pneumosintes with the occurrence of periodontitis. Material and Methods Thirty subjects with chronic periodontitis (ChP) and 10 with periodontal health (PH) were included in the study. Nine subgingival biofilm samples were collected as follows: i) PH group - from the mesial/buccal aspect of each tooth in two randomly chosen contralateral quadrants; ii) ChP group - from three sites in each of the following probing depth (PD) categories: shallow (≤3 mm), moderate (4-6 mm) and deep (≥7 mm). Checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization was used to analyze the samples. Results We found the three species evaluated in a higher percentage of sites and at higher levels in the group with ChP than in the PH group (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney test). We also observed these differences when the samples from sites with PD≤4 mm or ≥5 mm of subjects with ChP were compared with those from subjects with PH (p<0.05, Mann-Whitney test). In addition, the prevalence and levels of D. pneumosintes, and especially of F. alocis were very low in healthy subjects (0.12x105 and 0.01x105, respectively). Conclusion F. alocis and D. pneumosintes might be associated with the etiology of ChP, and their role in the onset and progression of this infection should be further investigated. The role of P. endodontalis was less evident, since this species was found in relatively high levels and prevalence in the PH group.
