Objective: To evaluate the associations of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA), vigorous physical activity (VPA), moderate physical activity (MPA), and sedentary behavior (SB) with depressive, anxiety, and co-occurring depressive and anxiety symptoms (D&A) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil.Methods: Cross-sectional online survey in self-isolating people. Self-reported MVPA, VPA, MPA, and SB (exposures), and depressive and anxiety symptoms (Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories [BDI and BAI]) were collected. Associations of MVPA, VPA, MPA, and SB with prevalent depressive (BDI>9), anxiety (BAI>7), and D&A (BDI>9+BAI>7) symptoms were investigated using logistic regressions, presented as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI). Linear regressions were performed testing associations with symptom severity. Models were adjusted for confounding factors. Results: Participants (n=937, females=72.3%) performing ≥30min/day MVPA or ≥15min/day VPA had lower odds of prevalent depressive (ORMVPA=0.71, 95%CI=0.53-0.96; ORVPA=0.60, 95%CI=0.43-0.82), anxiety (ORMVPA=0.71, 95%CI=0.54-0.96; ORVPA=0.70, 95%CI=0.51-0.96), and co-occurring D&A symptoms (ORMVPA=0.71, 95%CI=0.52-0.96; ORVPA=0.59, 95%CI=0.41-0.83). People spending ≥10h/day sedentary were more likely to have depressive symptoms (OR=1.39,95%CI=1.02-1.90). Each hour spent sedentary corresponded to 0.22 (95%CI=0.10-0.33) points and 0.16 (95%CI=0.02-0.31) points higher on the BDI and BAI, respectively.Conclusion: Higher MVPA and VPA levels are associated with lower odds of depressive, anxiety and D&A symptoms. Higher SB is associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms.

While great strides have been made to improve accessibility to higher education in South Africa, successful completion of bachelor's degrees within the prescribed time remains a challenge. Research suggests that a lack of conceptual understanding by students might be at the heart of the problem. This study, which is grounded in Ausubel's Assimilation Theory as applied by Joseph Novak and his colleagues, investigates the value of concept mapping as a scaffolding technique to improve conceptual understanding. The research involved a quasi-experiment with a test and a control group. It was hypothesised that accounting students in an extended programme who had been introduced to the concept mapping technique would demonstrate an improved grasp of accounting concepts, indicated by an improvement in their marks when composing an explanatory paragraph of accounting concepts after a teaching intervention. However, the post-intervention marks of the test group showed no improvement, and therefore no proof can be offered to support the claim that concept mapping improves conceptual understanding. Pre-and post-intervention questionnaires were used to collect data on confounding variables and also to assess student experiences of concept mapping. An analysis of student experiences indicated enthusiasm for the technique. Limitations of the study included the absence of a pilot study and insufficient time to become familiar with concept mapping. An unforeseen constraint on the study was low student participation.

We present the first known complication of forearm compartment syndrome after mannitol infusion during partial nephrectomy. We stress the importance of excellent intravenous catheter access and constant visual monitoring of the intravenous catheter site during and after mannitol infusion as ways to prevent this complication. Prompt recognition of compartment syndrome with appropriate intervention can prevent long-term sequelae.

Since the 1988 World Health Assembly resolution to eradicate poliomyelitis, considerable progress has been made towards interrupting the transmission of wild poliovirus globally. A formal process for the certification of polio eradication was established on the basis of experience gained during smallpox eradication. Independent groups of experts were designated at the global, regional, and country levels to conduct the process. The main requirements for the global certification of the eradication of wild poliovirus are the absence of wild poliovirus, isolated from suspect polio cases, healthy individuals, or environmental samples, in all WHO regions for a period of at least three years in the presence of high-quality, certification-standard surveillance and the containment of all wild poliovirus stocks in laboratories. Three WHO regions - the Region of the Americas (1994), Western Pacific Region (2000), and European Region (2002) - have already been certified free of indigenous wild poliovirus. Eradication and certification activities are progressing well in the three endemic regions (African, Eastern Mediterranean, and South-East Asia). Several challenges remain for the certification of polio eradication: the need for even closer coordination of certification activities between WHO regions, the verification of laboratory containment, the development of an appropriate mechanism to verify the absence of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses in the future, and the maintenance of polio-free status in certified regions until global certification.

Desde la resolución adoptada en 1988 por la Asamblea Mundial de la Salud para erradicar la poliomielitis, los progresos hacia la interrupción de la transmisión del poliovirus salvaje a nivel mundial han sido considerables. Se trazó un proceso formal para certificar la erradicación de la poliomielitis sobre la base de la experiencia adquirida durante la erradicación de la viruela, y se nombraron grupos independientes de expertos a nivel mundial, regional y de país para dirigir el proceso. Los requisitos principales para la certificación mundial de la erradicación del poliovirus salvaje son la ausencia de este poliovirus en casos sospechosos de poliomielitis, individuos sanos o muestras ambientales en todas las regiones de la OMS durante un periodo de al menos tres años, la instauración de una vigilancia de alta calidad conforme con los criterios de certificación, y la contención de todas las reservas de poliovirus salvaje en los laboratorios. Tres Regiones de la OMS - Américas (1994), Pacífico Occidental (2000) y Europa (2002) - ya han sido certificadas como libres del poliovirus salvaje autóctono. La erradicación y las actividades de certificación están progresando satisfactoriamente en las tres regiones endémicas (África, Mediterráneo Oriental y Asia Sudoriental). No obstante, en el camino hacia la certificación de la erradicación quedan todavía algunos obstáculos: la necesidad de una coordinación aún mayor de las actividades de certificación entre las regiones de la OMS, la verificación de la contención en los laboratorios, el desarrollo de un mecanismo apropiado para comprobar la ausencia de poliovirus circulantes de origen vacunal en el futuro, y el mantenimiento de la situación de ausencia de poliomielitis en las regiones certificadas hasta el momento de la certificación mundial.

Depuis la résolution de l'Assemblée mondiale de la Santé adoptée en 1988 concernant l'éradication de la poliomyélite, l'interruption de la transmission du poliovirus sauvage a considérablement progressé dans le monde entier. Une procédure formelle de certification a été établie sur la base de l'expérience acquise pour la variole. Des groupes indépendants d'experts ont été désignés aux niveaux mondial, régional et des pays pour mener cette procédure à bien. En matière de certification, les principales exigences sont l'absence constatée du poliovirus sauvage dans des échantillons prélevés sur des cas suspects, sur des sujets en bonne santé ou dans l'environnement, dans toutes les Régions de l'OMS pendant au moins trois années consécutives moyennant une surveillance de grande qualité répondant aux normes de certification, et le confinement de tous les stocks de poliovirus sauvages en laboratoire. Trois Régions de l'OMS - les Amériques (1994), le Pacifique occidental (2000) et la Région européenne (2002) - ont déjà été certifiées exemptes de poliovirus sauvages autochtones. L'éradication et les activités en vue de la certification progressent dans les trois Régions d'endémie (Afrique, Méditerranée orientale et Asie du Sud-Est). Il reste plusieurs défis à relever pour parvenir à la certification : renforcer la coordination des activités de certification entre les Régions de l'OMS, vérifier le confinement des virus en laboratoire, mettre au point un mécanisme pour vérifier à l'avenir que les poliovirus dérivés des souches vaccinales ne circulent pas, maintenir le statut des Régions déjà certifiées jusqu'à la certification mondiale.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) by the sisterhood method in two districts of the Brong-Ahafo region of Ghana, and to determine the impact of different assumptions and analytical decisions on these estimates. METHODS: Indirect estimates of the MMR were calculated from data collected in 1995 by Family Health International (FHI) on 5202 women aged 15-49 years, using a household screen of randomly selected areas in the two districts. Other data from the nationally representative 1994 Ghana Infant, Child and Maternal Mortality Survey (ICMMS) and from the 1997 Kassena-Nankana District study were also used for comparison. FINDINGS: Based on the FHI data, the MMR was estimated to be 269 maternal deaths per 100 000 live births for both districts combined, a figure higher than ICMMS estimates. Biases during data collection may account for this difference, including the fact that biases underestimating mortality are more common than those overestimating it. Biases introduced during data analysis were also considered, but only the total fertility rate used to calculate the MMR seemed to affect the estimates significantly. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the sisterhood method is still being refined and the extent and impact of biases have only recently received attention. Users of this method should be aware of limitations when interpreting results. We recommend using confidence limits around estimates, both to dispel false impressions of precision and to reduce overinterpretation of data.

OBJETIVO: Estimar la razón de mortalidad materna (RMM) por el método de las hermanas en dos distritos de la región de Brong-Ahafo (Ghana), y determinar el impacto de diferentes hipótesis y decisiones analíticas en esas estimaciones. MÉTODOS:Las RMM se calcularon indirectamente a partir de datos reunidos en 1995 por Family Health International (FHI) entre 5202 mujeres de 15 a 49 años, realizando un cribado de hogares de zonas elegidas al azar en los dos distritos. Se usaron también a efectos comparativos otros datos procedentes de la encuesta nacional de Ghana de 1994 sobre la mortalidad infantil y materna (ICMMS) y del estudio realizado en 1997 en el distrito de Kassena-Nankana. RESULTADOS: A partir de los datos de FHI se estimó una RMM de 269 defunciones maternas por 100 000 nacidos vivos para los dos distritos combinados, cifra superior a la estimada a partir de la ICMMS. Esta diferencia podría explicarse por los sesgos presentes en el acopio de datos, en particular por el hecho de que los sesgos de subestimación de la mortalidad son más frecuentes que los de sobreestimación. También se tuvieron en cuenta los sesgos introducidos durante el análisis de datos, pero las estimaciones de la RMM sólo parecían verse afectadas de forma significativa por la tasa de fecundidad total empleada para calcularla. CONCLUSIÓN: Los resultados indican que el método de las hermanas sigue teniendo que perfeccionarse y que sólo recientemente se ha prestado atención a lamagnitud y el impacto de los sesgos. Los usuarios de ese método deben ser conscientes de sus limitaciones al interpretar los resultados. Recomendamos que se usen límites de confianza en torno a las estimaciones, tanto para evitar que se transmita una imagen falsa de precisión como para reducir el riesgo de sobreinterpretación de los datos.

OBJECTIF: Estimer le ratio de mortalité maternelle par la méthode dite « des soeurs » dans deux districts de Brong-Ahafo au Ghana et déterminer l’impact sur ces estimations de différentes hypothèses et décisions analytiques. MÉTHODES: Le ratio de mortalité maternelle a été estimé indirectement à partir des données recueillies en 1995 par Family Health International (FHI) chez 5202 femmes de 15 à 49 ans, en utilisant un échantillon de ménages appartenant à des secteurs sélectionnés aléatoirement dans les deux districts. D’autres données, provenant de l’enquête ICMMS (Infant, Child and Maternal Mortality Survey) réalisée au Ghana en 1994 et représentative à l’échelle nationale, ainsi que de l’étude réalisée en 1997 dans le district de Kassena-Nankana ont également été utilisées à titre de comparaison. RÉSULTATS: D’après les données de FHI, le ratio de mortalité maternelle a été estimé à 269 décès maternels pour 100 000 naissances vivantes dans les deux districts réunis, un chiffre plus élevé que celui de l’ICMMS. La présence de biais lors de la collecte des données pourrait expliquer ces différences, notamment le fait que les biais qui conduisent à une sous-estimation de la mortalité sont plus fréquents que ceux qui conduisent à sa surestimation. Les biais introduits lors de l’analyse ont également été examinés, mais seul le taux de fécondité total utilisé pour calculer le ratio de mortalité maternelle semble modifier sensiblement les estimations. CONCLUSION: D’après les résultats, la méthode dite « des soeurs » peut encore être améliorée et l’importance et l’influence des biais ne retiennent l’attention que depuis peu. Les utilisateurs de cette méthode doivent être conscients de ses limites lorsqu’ils interprè tent les résultats. Nous recommandons de donner les estimations accompagnées de leur intervalle de confiance, à la fois pour dissiper toute impression erronée de précision et pour limiter la surinterprétation des données.
