Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Plasmatic progesterone concentrations were evaluated during the synchronization protocol with two doses of 22.5µg of Prostaglandin F2α, 10-day interval, and the conception rate of females in accordance to the reply to the protocol. Twenty-three female goats and two sexually mature Toggenburg bucks were used. Blood was sampled on day 0 (1st PGF2α injection), and on the following days 5, 10 (2nd PGF2α injection), 15, 20, and 33. The positive reply to the PGF2α was determined when the progesterone concentrations fell to values below 1.5ng/mL at days 5 and 15. The females were divided in three groups: Group I: females that responded to the two PGF2α applications; Group II: females that responded only to the second application; Group III: females that responded the first application, did not respond to the second application, were inseminated but did not conceive. The presence of a functional corpus luteum at the moment of the applications determined the reply to the protocol. There was no difference in the conception rates between females that responded to the two PGF2α applications or responded only to the second application.

Two portions of boar ejaculate - first 15mL of the sperm rich fraction (P1) and the rest of the ejaculate (P2) - were collected weekly from 5 mature boars and submitted to two cooling methods, extended in MR-A® and cooled at 17°C (T1) or extended in glycine-egg yolk and cooled at 5°C (T2). Spermatozoa motility, vigor, and morphological characteristics were evaluated immediately after collection and in different storage times. All treatments kept an acceptable motility, higher than 50%, in the first 24h of storage. The P2T2 maintained a similar motility (P>0.05) throughout the cooling storage (72h) and was superior in that period, while the other treatments presented a decrease in motility related to time. There was no difference between the two portions regarding the total number of normal spermatozoa in the fresh semen (P>0.05). All treatments showed morphological abnormalities within the acceptable thresholds, irrespectively of the storage time. Thus, due to low volume and high concentration, P1 seems to be more adequate for sperm dose transportation. Furthermore, this methodology will allow the development of new proposals concerning the transportation of swine semen, while the rest of the ejaculate could be used in farm routines to produce conventional liquid semen doses.

The conception rate, the prostaglandin response, the estrus duration, the reproductive class, and the mucous of goats inseminated with semen diluted in egg yolk extender and cooled at 5ºC, for 12 or 24 hours were evaluated. Sixty-two female goats and two sexually mature Toggenburg bucks were used. The females received two doses of 22.5µg of prostaglandine F2α, at 10-day intervals. After the first injection, the estrus was monitored three times a day (6:00, 12:00, and 18:00h), with a buck teaser. Only one insemination was used. The percentages of animals that showed estrus after the first and the second injection of PGF2α were 85.5% and 88.7%, respectively. The average intervals from first and second PGF2α injection to estrus were 41.04±20.32 and 45.67±9.28h, and the estrus durations for both injections were 40.02±15.96 and 32.24±12.09h, in this order. The interval from the PGF2α injection to the beginning of the estrus was longer (P<0.05), whereas the estrus duration was shorter (P<0.05) in the estrus induced after the second PGF2α injection. The total conception rate was 49.1%. Neither the semen storage length (12 or 24 hours) nor the reproductive class did not affect (P>0.05) the conception rate. The mucous observed at the insemination time influenced (P<0.05) the fertility of inseminated goats, with the striated aspect associated to higher fertility.

The fertilizing capacity of goat semen cooled in egg yolk diluent at 5ºC, for 12 or 24 hours was evaluated. Sixty-two Toggenburg does and two sexually mature Toggenburg bucks were used in a fatorial treatment combination (two bucks and two storage periods). The semen was diluted in 2.5% Tris-frutose-egg yolk; envased in 0.25mL plastic straws, with 150x10(6) mobile spermatozoa; and cooled at 5ºC for 12 or 24 hours. The females received two doses of 22.5µg of prostaglandine F2α, at each 10-day intervals in order to synchronize the estrous. From the first PGF2α injection, estrous occurrence was monitored three times per day. Only one insemination was used, using the cervix fixation method, 12 hours after the estrous onset. The means of motility and strength, 12 (TI) and 24 hours (TII) after semen cooling at 5ºC, were 66.14±0.11% and 62.50±0.05%, and 3.46±0.61 and 3.27±0.50, respectively. Neither the sire nor the period of semen influenced (P>0.05) the conception rate of the does, which was 49.1%.

Serotype, mating type and ploidy of 84 strains of Cryptococcus neoformans isolated from 61 AIDS and 23 non-AIDS patients admitted in a tertiary teaching hospital in São Paulo, Brazil were examined. Among 61 strains isolated from AIDS patients, 60 strains were var. grubii (serotype A). Only one strain was var. gattii (serotype B). No var. neoformans (serotype D) was found. Among 23 strains isolated from non-AIDS patients, 15 were var. grubii (serotype A) and the remaining 8 were var. gattii, all of which were serotype B. Seventy-three of the 75 serotype A strains were the heterothallic alpha type (MATalpha) and the remaining 2 were untypable (asexual). Most of the MATalpha strains (69/73) were haploid and the remaining 4 strains were diploid. Similarly, both of the 2 asexual strains among the 75 serotype A strains were haploid. There were no alpha-mating type (MATalpha) strains among the 84 isolates. All of the 8 var. gattii strains were serotype B and haploid. Among a total of 84 strains tested, neither serotype AD nor serotype D were found. Neither triploid nor tetraploid were found. These results suggest that the serological, sexual and ploidy characteristics in C. neoformans strains isolated from AIDS patients in São Paulo were rather simple, whereas strains isolated from non-AIDS patients presented serotype A and B with predominance of serotype A.

Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is endemic worldwide. The proposed treatment is expensive and there are few reports regarding reinfection rates in Brazil. The aim of this study was to compare the eradication rates obtained with two therapeutic options and to evaluate reinfection one year after treatment. This was a prospective randomized trial with 55 patients. Thirty-nine patients had active duodenal ulcer (DU) and 16 non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD), and all tested positive for HP. Diagnosis was based on at least two positive tests: ultrarapid urease test, histology and/or culture. Patients were randomized to two groups: group OMC treated with 40 mg omeprazole (once a day), 500 mg metronidazole and 250 mg clarithromycin (twice daily) for 7 days, or group NA treated with 300 mg nizatidine (once a day) and 1000 mg amoxicillin (twice daily) for 14 days. Those patients in whom HP was eradicated were followed up for one year to evaluate reinfection. Twenty-five patients were randomized for OMC and 30 for NA. HP eradication occurred in 20/25 patients (80%) treated with OMC and 13/30 (43%) treated with NA (P = 0.01). After reallocation because of initial treatment failure, the overall eradication rate was 44/51 patients (86%). After an average follow-up of one year, we evaluated 34 patients (23 with DU and 11 with NUD). Reinfection occurred in 3/34 patients (7.6%). We conclude that OMC is effective for HP eradication, and that NA should not be used. Reinfection occurs in 7.6% of the patients in the first year after eradication.

Samples of UHT whole milk from eight different trademarks commercialized in Belo Horizonte, Brazil were examined for microbiological aspects from January to April, 1999. Of 80 milk samples, 33 (41.2%) showed high viable of aerobic mesophilic counts ranging from 1.3×10(4) to 1.4×10(5) CFU/ml (4.1 e 5.1 log CFU/ml) and were in disagreement with from Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil Official Microbiological Standards (RTIQ). Of 174 isolated microorganisms, 162 (93.0%) belonged to genus Bacillus, 3 (1.7%) were Micrococcus, 9 (5.2%) were Gram positive pleomorphic rods without spores. The last bacteria were suggestive of Corynebacterium like-organisms, however they were not classified as such. It was concluded that the UHT whole milk commercialized in Belo Horizonte does not fit the microbiological aspects set by RTIQ, when applied to the retail sale. Bacteria from Bacillus genus were the most isolated.
