Resumo A coruja-das-torres americana (Tyto furcata) vive em ambientes urbanos e se alimenta principalmente de pequenos roedores, sendo de grande importância no controle biológico de pragas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever os hábitos alimentares, parentais e reprodutivos de um casal de corujas-das-torres americanas, naturalmente vivendo fora de uma residência na zona urbana do município de Campos dos Goytacazes, estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Uma caixa de madeira foi instalada em uma parede externa da casa, monitorada por uma câmera de vídeo. Uma planilha foi criada para manter o controle das observações registradas. A fêmea pôs quatro ovos, e após período de incubação de 30-32 dias todos os ovos eclodiram, mas apenas dois filhotes sobreviveram após o canibalismo entre os filhotes. Inicialmente, o macho fornecia a comida aos filhotes e a fêmea permanecia no ninho cuidando da ninhada. Depois de cerca de um mês, a fêmea também começou a sair do ninho e voltar com a presa, que era oferecida aos filhotes, com o macho também continuando com esse comportamento. Os filhotes deixaram o ninho em setembro de 2017. Os dados obtidos mostram a existência de cooperação e divisão de tarefas entre corujas machos e fêmeas durante o período reprodutivo.

Abstract The American Barn Owl (Tyto furcata) lives in urban, periurban and wild environments and feeds mainly on small rodents, meaning it has great importance in the biological control of pests. The aim of this work was to describe the reproductive, parental and eating habits of a pair of American barn owls naturally living outside a residence in the urban area of the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. A wood box was installed on an outside wall of the home, monitored by a video camera. A spreadsheet was created to keep track of the observations recorded. The female laid four eggs, and after an incubation period of 30-32 days all the eggs hatched, but only two chicks survived after cannibalism among the chicks. Initially, the male provided the food to the chicks and the female remained in the nest caring for the brood. After approximately a month, the female also began to leave the nest and return with prey, which was offered to the chicks, with the male also continuing this behavior. The chicks left the nest in September, 2017. The data obtained show the existence of cooperation and division of tasks between male and female owls during the reproductive period.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to check whether there is linear dependence between phenological, morphological and production traits and tassel traits in maize genotypes. Seven experiments were conducted with 16 maize genotypes, in a randomized block design, with three replicates. Four groups of traits were evaluated: phenological (two), morphological (three), production (four) and tassel (11). Joint analysis of variance and F test at 5% significance level were performed. The matrix of phenotypic correlation coefficients between the traits was estimated and multicollinearity was diagnosed in each group of traits. Associations between the groups of traits were checked by canonical correlation analysis. There is linear dependence between phenological, morphological and production traits and tassel traits in maize genotypes. Phenological (number of days from sowing to 50% of male flowering and number of days from sowing to 50% of female flowering), morphological (plant height and spike height) and production (number of spikes and grain yield) traits are positively associated with tassel traits (tassel branch number and tassel dry matter). Tassel branch number and tassel dry matter can be used for indirect selection of maize plants.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar se há dependência linear entre os caracteres fenológicos, morfológicos e produtivos com os caracteres de pendão em genótipos de milho. Foram conduzidos sete experimentos com 16 genótipos de milho, no delineamento experimental blocos ao acaso, com três repetições. Foram avaliados quatro grupos de caracteres: fenológicos (dois), morfológicos (três), produtivos (quatro) e de pendão (11). A análise de variância conjunta e o teste F a 5% de significância foram realizados. A matriz de coeficientes de correlação fenotípica entre os caracteres foi estimada e realizado o diagnóstico de multicolinearidade, em cada grupo de caracteres. As associações entre os grupos de caracteres foram verificadas por meio da análise de correlação canônica. Há dependência linear entre os caracteres fenológicos, morfológicos e produtivos com os caracteres de pendão em genótipos de milho. Os caracteres fenológicos (número de dias da semeadura até 50% do florescimento masculino e número de dias da semeadura até 50% do florescimento feminino), morfológicos (altura de planta e altura de inserção da espiga) e produtivos (número de espigas e produtividade de grãos) estão associados positivamente aos caracteres de pendão (número de ramificações e matéria seca do pendão). O número de ramificações e a matéria seca do pendão podem ser utilizados para seleção indireta de plantas de milho.

ABSTRACT Forage wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an annual crop, alternative for use as a ground cover crop in the winter period, in production systems in southern Brazil. Given its magnitude, research with field experiments is carried out and plot size definition is of great importance in the experimental design. The objectives of this study were to estimate the plot size and number of repetitions to evaluate the fresh matter of forage wheat and to investigate the variability of plot size among agricultural years, sowing dates and cultivars. Thirty-six uniformity trials were conducted (two agricultural years × three sowing dates × two cultivars × three repetitions). Plot size was determined by the method of maximum curvature of the coefficient of variation model. The number of repetitions was determined for experiments in completely randomized and randomized block designs in scenarios formed by the combinations of i treatments (i=3, 4, …, 50) and d least significant differences among treatment means to be detected as significant by the Tukey test, at 5% of significance, expressed as a percentage of the overall mean of the experiment (d=5%, 10%, …, 30%). The plot size to evaluate the fresh matter of forage wheat is 4.05 m2. Seven repetitions are sufficient to identify the fresh matter in completely randomized designs and randomized block designs with up to 50 treatments, making it possible to obtain least significant difference lower than or equal to 20% of the mean of the experiment.

RESUMO O trigo forrageiro (Triticum aestivum L.) é uma cultura anual, alternativa de utilização como cultura de cobertura de solo no período de inverno, em sistemas produtivos da região Sul do Brasil. Dada sua magnitude, pesquisas com experimentos a campo são desenvolvidas e a definição do tamanho de parcela tem grande importância no planejamento experimental. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram estimar o tamanho de parcela e o número de repetições para avaliar a matéria fresca de trigo forrageiro e investigar a variabilidade de tamanho de parcela entre anos agrícolas, épocas de semeadura e cultivares. Foram conduzidos 36 ensaios de uniformidade (dois anos agrícolas × três épocas de semeadura × duas cultivares × três repetições). O tamanho de parcela foi determinado por meio do método da curvatura máxima do modelo do coeficiente de variação. O número de repetições foi determinado para experimentos nos delineamentos inteiramente casualizado e blocos ao acaso em cenários formados pelas combinações de i tratamentos (i=3, 4, ..., 50) e d diferenças mínimas entre médias de tratamentos detectadas como significativas pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de significância, expressas em percentagem da média do experimento (d=5%, 10%, ..., 30%). O tamanho de parcela para avaliar a matéria fresca de trigo forrageiro é 4,05 m2. Sete repetições são suficientes para avaliar a matéria fresca em delineamentos inteiramente casualizado e blocos ao acaso com até 50 tratamentos, possibilitando obter diferença mínima significativa menor ou igual a 20% da média do experimento.

Abstract Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is considered one of the most common autosomal recessive disorders, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 10,000 live births. Testing for SMA has been recommended for inclusion in neonatal screening (NBS) panels since there are several therapies available and there is evidence of greater efficacy when introduced in the pre/early symptomatic phases. In Brazil, the National Neonatal Screening Program tests for six diseases, with a new law issued in 2021 stating that it should incorporate more diseases, including SMA. In the present study, dried blood spot (DBS) samples collected by the Reference Services of Neonatal Screening of RS and SP, to perform the conventional test were also screened for SMA, using real-time PCR, with SALSA MC002 technique. A total of 40,000 samples were analyzed, enabling the identification of four positive cases of SMA, that were confirmed by MLPA. Considering our sampling, Brazil seems to have an incidence comparable to the described in other regions. This work demonstrated that the use of the MC002 technique in samples routinely collected for the conventional NBS program is suitable to screen for SMA in our conditions and can be included in the expansion of the neonatal screening programs.

Abstract It is repeatedly stressed the need to characterize the extant biodiversity in tropical ecosystems. However, inventory studies are still progressing slowly in dry ecosystems, leading to the underestimation of their true biodiversity and hindering conservation efforts. In this study, we present primary and secondary data, along with an updated list of amphibians and reptiles from two localities in the São Francisco-Gurguéia region in Piauí. Additionally, we compare the species composition between nine areas within the Caatinga, which were sampled using standardized methods over the past ten years, to examine broader spatial patterns of community composition. To survey reptiles and amphibians, we employed similar methods and sampling efforts in two areas within the Serra das Confusões National Park (SCNP) region. Our surveys recorded a total of 73 species of amphibians and reptiles, of which 24 are new distribution records for the SCNP region. Consequently, our findings increase the known herpetofauna in the region to 94 species. Despite their proximity, the two sites in the SCNP region exhibited only 42% similarity in species composition, and they differed significantly from other areas within the Caatinga. Furthermore, even the closer Caatinga areas presented differences in species composition, highlighting the necessity to evaluate biodiversity across the landscape and contribute to understanding biogeographic patterns.

Resumo É repetidamente enfatizada a necessidade de caracterizar a biodiversidade vivente em ecossistemas tropicais. No entanto, os estudos de inventário ainda estão progredindo lentamente em ecossistemas secos, levando à subestimação de sua verdadeira biodiversidade e dificultando os esforços de conservação. Neste estudo, apresentamos dados primários e secundários, juntamente com uma lista atualizada de anfíbios e répteis de duas localidades na região de São Francisco-Gurguéia, do Piauí. Além disso, comparamos a composição de espécies entre nove áreas dentro da Caatinga, que foram amostradas usando métodos padronizados nos últimos dez anos, para examinar padrões espaciais mais amplos de composição da comunidade. Para estudar répteis e anfíbios, utilizamos métodos e esforços de amostragem semelhantes em duas áreas na região do Parque Nacional da Serra das Confusões (PNSC). Nossos levantamentos registraram um total de 73 espécies de anfíbios e répteis, das quais 24 são novos registros de distribuição para a região do PNSC. Consequentemente, nossos resultados aumentam a herpetofauna conhecida na região para 94 espécies. Apesar da proximidade, os dois locais na região do PNSC exibiram apenas 42% de similaridade na composição de espécies e diferiram significativamente de outras áreas dentro da Caatinga. Mesmo áreas mais próximas da Caatinga apresentaram diferenças na composição de espécies, destacando a necessidade de avaliar a biodiversidade em toda a paisagem e contribuir para a compreensão de padrões biogeográficos.

Abstract The Santos Basin (SB) is the main petroliferous basin in the Brazilian continental margin and one of the most studied marine areas in Brazil. However, historical data suggest that new efforts should be carried out to acquire quantitative biological data, especially in the deep sea, to establish the baseline of essential ocean variables in different ecosystems for future monitoring programs. The Brazilian energy company Petrobras planned and executed 24 oceanographic cruises over a period of 2 years to assess the benthic (SANSED cruise) and pelagic (SANAGU cruise) systems of the SB (356 days at sea in 2019 and 2021/2022). These efforts were part of the Santos Project, which comprised a comprehensive environmental study aimed at investigating benthic and pelagic variables to characterize ecology, biogeochemistry, thermohaline properties of water masses, and ocean circulation patterns, geomorphology, and sedimentology, as well as organic and inorganic chemistry. Here we present the detailed sampling designs and the field methods employed on board, during the SB scientific cruises. All sampling protocols were based on standardized approaches. For the benthos analyses, triplicate sediment samples were performed using a GOMEX-type box corer (0.25 m²) or a large modified Van Veen grab (0.75 m²) at 100 stations ranging from 25 to 2400 m depth. At each station, 25 geochemical and physico-chemical parameters were analyzed in addition to micro-, meio-, and macrofauna and living foraminifera samples. For the pelagic system, 60 stations were selected to investigate the plankton community, ranging in size from pico- to macroplankton, through vertical, horizontal, and oblique net hauls (20, 200, and 500 μm mesh size), as well as 25 biogeochemical parameters collected with an aid of a CTD-rosette sampler. Part of this scientific information also serves the Regional Environmental Characterization Project (PCR-BS) in support of Petrobras’ Santos Basin drilling licensing process led by the Brazilian Environmental Agency – IBAMA. This project contributes to the sustainable development of the SB, in line with the guidelines of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of cowpea cultivars inoculated with rhizobia strains recommended for cowpea in a semiarid environment. Experiments were carried out in Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, in two agricultural cycles: the first from January to April 2019, and the second from June to August of the same year. The experimental design adopted was randomized blocks with four replications arranged in a 4 × 4 x 2 factorial scheme, with treatments consisting of four cowpea cultivars: ‘BRS Imponente’, ‘BRS Itaim’, ‘BRS Novaera’, and ‘BRS Tumucumaque’ as well as three sources of N, two strains of Bradyrhizobium spp. registered for cowpea (BR 3262 and BR 3267) and, the application of mineral N (50 kg ha-1), beyond an absolute control, without inoculation or application of mineral N. In addition to two planting seasons. The cultivar ‘BRS Tumucumaque’ showed greater productive potential. The inoculation of cowpea seeds with Bradyrhizobium strains BR 3262 and BR 3267 provided grain yields similar to those obtained with the application of mineral N.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a eficiência agronômica de cultivares de feijão-caupi inoculadas com linhagens de rizóbios recomendadas para feijão-caupi em ambiente semiárido. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em Mossoró, Rio Grande do Norte, em duas safras agrícolas: o primeiro de janeiro a abril de 2019, e o segundo de junho a agosto do mesmo ano. O delineamento experimental adotado foi de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições em esquema fatorial 4 × 4 x 2, com tratamentos constituídos por quatro cultivares de feijão-caupi: 'BRS Imponente', 'BRS Itaim', 'BRS Novaera' e 'BRS Tumucumaque' e três fontes de N, duas linhagens de Bradyrhizobium spp. registradas para o feijão-caupi (BR 3262 e BR 3267), aplicação de N mineral (50 kg ha-1), além de uma testemunha absoluta, sem inoculação ou aplicação de N mineral. Além de duas épocas de plantio. A cultivar 'BRS Tumucumaque' apresentou maior potencial produtivo. A inoculação de sementes de feijão-caupi com as linhagens de Bradyrhizobium BR 3262 e BR 3267 proporcionou rendimentos de grãos semelhantes aos obtidos com a aplicação de N mineral.

Eugenia is the largest neotropical genus in the Myrtaceae family. The genus has a wide geographical distribution, occurring from Mexico to Argentina. Eugenia species are rich in essential oils. Essential oils have applications in perfumery, cosmetics, food, pesticides and medicines. Several factors can influence the chemical composition and yield of essential oils, such as extraction technique, season of the year, genetic variations and environmental conditions. The understanding of how much each of these factors interferes in the formation of essential oils can contribute both to the development of more efficient production processes and to the ecological knowledge of the species of the genus. This study aimed to assess the influence of environmental variables on the chemical composition of essential oils from Eugenia species. The method used was to carry out chemometrics analyzes (regression analysis, factor analysis and multivariate analysis of variance) to explain the influence of environmental factors on the chemical composition of essential oils. The estimated regression model was significant (p-value < 0.05). Environmental variables analyzed significantly influenced and account for 11.5% of the variation observed in the chemical composition of essential oils. Phytochemical pattern of essential oil composition was also significantly different among Eugenia species.

O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a proporção da população de 133 cidades brasileiras que apresentou algum problema de saúde entre março e agosto de 2020, mas que deixou de procurar atendimento, ou que deixou de buscar um serviço de saúde para consultas ou exames de rotina. Foram realizadas entrevistas domiciliares entre 24 e 27 de agosto de 2020 em 133 áreas urbanas brasileiras. Perguntava-se aos indivíduos se, desde o início da pandemia de COVID-19 em março de 2020, haviam sofrido algum problema de saúde mais não haviam procurado atendimento, ou se haviam deixado de realizar consultas ou exames de rotina. A regressão de Poisson foi utilizada para as análises. Foram entrevistados 33.250 indivíduos, entre os quais 11,8% (IC95%: 11,4-12,1) relataram que desde março de 2020 haviam deixado de procurar atendimento apesar de estarem doentes, 17,3% (IC95%: 16,9-17,7) haviam deixado de comparecer a consultas de rotina ou triagem e 23,9% (IC95%: 23,4-24,4) relataram um ou ambos os desfechos. O fechamento dos serviços de saúde e o medo da infecção pelo SARS-CoV-2 foram os principais motivos para não buscar atendimento. As mulheres e os indivíduos com menor nível socioeconômico mostraram maior probabilidade de não procurarem serviços de saúde em caso de doença, ou de faltar a consultas de rotina previamente agendadas. Por outro lado, indivíduos que se identificavam como brancos eram menos propensos a deixar de procurar os serviços de saúde. A pandemia da COVID-19 está afetando mais duramente os indígenas e as pessoas com menor nível socioeconômico, que também são mais propensos a deixar de procurar atendimento para outras condições de saúde durante a pandemia.

We aimed to assess the proportion of the population in 133 Brazilian municipalities who - from March to August 2020 - had a health problem but failed to seek care or failed to attend to a health service for routine appointment or examination. We conducted a household survey from August 24-27 in 133 Brazilian cities by asking the subjects if, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, they had suffered from a health problem but did not seek care or failed to attend to a routine or screening examination. Poisson regression was used for the analyses. We interviewed 33,250 subjects and 11.8% (95%CI: 11.4-12.1) reported that, since March 2020, they failed to seek care despite being ill, 17.3% (95%CI: 16.9-17.7) failed to attend to a routine or screening examination and 23.9% (95%CI: 23.4-24.4) reported one or both outcomes. Health service closure and fear of the COVID-19 infection were the main reasons for not seeking care. Women and the poorest were more likely to not look for a health service, despite having a health problem or a scheduled routine appointment. On the other hand, those subjects who self-identified as white were less likely to not look for a health service. The COVID-19 pandemic is more critical for the indigenous people and the poorest, and these people are also more likely to not seek care for other health conditions during the pandemic.

Se realizó un estudio con el fin de evaluar la proporción de población en 133 ciudades brasileñas que -de marzo a agosto 2020- tuvieron un problema de salud, pero no consiguieron buscar cuidados, o presentarse en un servicio de salud para consultas de rutina o exámenes. Se llevó a cabo una encuesta domiciliaria entre el 24 y 27 de agosto en 133 áreas urbanas brasileñas. A los encuestados se les preguntó si, desde el principio de la pandemia de COVID-19 en marzo de 2020, habían sufrido algún problema de salud, pero no habían buscado asistencia, o no consiguieron presentarse a exámenes de rutina o de exploración. Se utilizó una regresión de Poisson para los análisis. Se entrevistó a 33.250 individuos, y un 11,8% (IC95%: 11,4-12,1) informaron que desde marzo de 2020 no consiguieron buscar asistencia, a pesar de estar enfermos, un 17,3% (IC95%: 16,9-17,7) no consiguieron presentarse a exámenes de rutina o visitas de exploración, y un 23,9% (IC95%: 23,4-24,4) informaron de uno o ambos resultados. El cierre de los servicios de salud y el miedo a contraer COVID-19 fueron las razones principales para no buscar cuidados. Las mujeres y aquellos que tenían un estatus socioeconómico bajo eran más propensos a no buscar asistencia sanitaria, tanto si tenían un problema médico, como para un chequeo rutinario o se saltaban una cita médica programada. Por otro lado, estas personas que se autoidentificaron como blancas eran menos propensas a no buscar asistencia sanitaria. La pandemia de COVID-19 está golpeando duramente a los indígenas y a quienes tienen un estatus socioeconómico bajo, y estas personas también son más propensas a no conseguir buscar asistencia sanitaria relacionada con otros problemas de salud durante la pandemia.

Abstract Aim: To compare muscular and cardiorespiratory parameters between Brazilian professional futsal athletes from different competitive levels (national versus regional). A secondary aim was to explore the correlation of physical fitness variables between both competitive levels. Methods: Twenty-two futsal players (24.7 ± 3.7 years), 11 from a regional team and 11 from a national team, were evaluated with countermovement jump test (lower limbs muscle power), square test (the speed with change direction), RSSA (anaerobic power), and YOYOIR1 (aerobic power). Tests were performed in the middle of the season for both teams. Results: The speed with change direction (p = 0.001) and mean anaerobic power (p = 0.04) were higher for national than the regional players. Sprint performance decreased similarly for national and regional level players (p < 0.001), but the latter had poorer performance (p = 0.044). From the fourth sprint on, sprints for the national level players were slower than the first three, while for the regional level players, each sprint speed was slower than the subsequent. A significant correlation was found between anaerobic power with jump height (r = −0.50; p = 0.01), speed with change direction (r=0.65; p = 0.001) and distance covered in the YOYOIR1 (r = −0.54; p = 0.01). Conclusion: National-level athletes were more agile and presented a higher mean anaerobic power than regional ones. Moreover, national-level athletes presented better performance along with repeated sprint tests, maintaining this performance for a longer time during the test.

Abstract Zoonotic spillover is a phenomenon characterized by the transfer of pathogens between different animal species. Most human emerging infectious diseases originate from non-human animals, and human-related environmental disturbances are the driving forces of the emergence of new human pathogens. Synthesizing the sequence of basic events involved in the emergence of new human pathogens is important for guiding the understanding, identification, and description of key aspects of human activities that can be changed to prevent new outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics. This review synthesizes the connections between environmental disturbances and increased risk of spillover events based on the One Health perspective. Anthropogenic disturbances in the environment (e.g., deforestation, habitat fragmentation, biodiversity loss, wildlife exploitation) lead to changes in ecological niches, reduction of the dilution effect, increased contact between humans and other animals, changes in the incidence and load of pathogens in animal populations, and alterations in the abiotic factors of landscapes. These phenomena can increase the risk of spillover events and, potentially, facilitate new infectious disease outbreaks. Using Brazil as a study model, this review brings a discussion concerning anthropogenic activities in the Amazon region and their potential impacts on spillover risk and spread of emerging diseases in this region.

Abstract Cholesterol is a lipid molecule of great biological importance to animal cells. Dysregulation of cholesterol metabolism leads to raised blood total cholesterol levels, a clinical condition called hypercholesterolemia. Evidence has shown that hypercholesterolemia is associated with the development of liver and heart disease. One of the mechanisms underlying heart and liver alterations induced by hypercholesterolemia is oxidative stress. In this regard, in several experimental studies, gold nanoparticles (AuNP) displayed antioxidant properties. We hypothesized that hypercholesterolemia causes redox system imbalance in the liver and cardiac tissues, and AuNP treatment could ameliorate it. Young adult male Swiss mice fed a regular rodent diet or a high cholesterol diet for eight weeks and concomitantly treated with AuNP (2.5 μg/kg) or vehicle by oral gavage. Hypercholesterolemia increased the nitrite concentration and glutathione (GSH) levels and decreased the liver’s superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Also, hypercholesterolemia significantly enhanced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and GSH levels in cardiac tissue. Notably, AuNP promoted the redox system homeostasis, increasing the SOD activity in hepatic tissue and reducing ROS levels in cardiac tissue. Overall, our data showed that hypercholesterolemia triggered oxidative stress in mice’s liver and heart, which was partially prevented by AuNP treatment.

Abstract Scientific collections constitute a valuable source for contributions to scientific research and the training of human resources in systematics, but also other areas of biological knowledge. In this contribution, we intend to discuss these advancements in collections and the role played by FAPESP in sponsoring them, as well as a general overview of the zoological collections in São Paulo state. We also aim to stress the importance of zoological collections and the need for continuous logistic and financial support from institutions and research agencies to maintain and develop these unique repositories of biodiversity. From 1980 to the present, FAPESP supported 118 research projects focused on several areas of zoology that are directly or indirectly associated with collections. There is a constant growth in the number of projects, and the financial support provided by FAPESP through the Biota Program was paramount for the advancement of our knowledge of biodiversity in Brazil. Parallel to the scientific advances, but not less important, this support allowed curators to increase the number of specimens, and to organize, maintain and digitize them in these valuable and irreplaceable collections. Regarding the lack of new taxonomists, it is essential that FAPESP and universities in São Paulo encourage the formation of new academics in zoological groups where specialists are rare. Considering the investment provided by FAPESP, it is quite important that the institutions that benefited from these resources took greater responsibility to safeguard these collections, and they should consider including resources on their budgets to obtain safety certificates, ensuring their permanence for many generations to come. Zoological collections are a heritage of humanity and are essential not only for the improvement of our knowledge of biodiversity but also with direct applications, among other services provided by these biological resources. It is important that research and teaching institutions in São Paulo that house specimens under their care start to value more this important patrimony and this heritage, as these collections represent the most valuable testimony of our impressive biodiversity, records of our past, and windows to our future, essential to our academic, scientific, cultural and social sovereignty.

Resumo As coleções científicas constituem uma fonte valiosa para contribuições à pesquisa científica e para a formação de recursos humanos em sistemática, mas também em outras áreas do conhecimento biológico. Nesta contribuição, pretendemos discutir esses avanços nas coleções e o papel desempenhado pela FAPESP no seu patrocínio, bem como um panorama geral das coleções zoológicas do estado de São Paulo. Também pretendemos enfatizar a importância das coleções zoológicas e a necessidade de apoio logístico e financeiro contínuo de instituições e agências de pesquisa para manter e desenvolver esses repositórios únicos de biodiversidade. Ao longo de 1980 até os dias atuais, a FAPESP apoiou 118 projetos de pesquisa focados em diversas áreas da zoologia, direta ou indiretamente associados a coleções. Há um crescimento constante no número de projetos, e o apoio financeiro da FAPESP por meio do Programa Biota foi fundamental para o avanço do nosso conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade no Brasil. Paralelamente aos avanços científicos, mas não menos importante, este apoio permitiu aos curadores aumentar o número de exemplares, e organizá-los, mantê-los e digitalizá-los nestas valiosas e insubstituíveis coleções. Em relação à falta de novos taxonomistas, é fundamental que a FAPESP e as universidades paulistas estimulem a formação de novos acadêmicos em grupos zoológicos onde os especialistas são raros. Considerando o investimento realizado pela FAPESP, é de suma importância que as instituições beneficiadas com esses recursos tenham maior responsabilidade na salvaguarda desses acervos, devendo considerar a inclusão de recursos em seus orçamentos para obtenção de certificados de segurança, garantindo sua permanência por muitas gerações. As coleções zoológicas são patrimônio da humanidade, e são essenciais não apenas para o aprimoramento do nosso conhecimento sobre a biodiversidade, mas também com aplicações diretas, entre outros serviços prestados por esses recursos biológicos. É importante que as instituições de pesquisa e ensino paulistas que abrigam exemplares sob seus cuidados passem a valorizar mais esse importante patrimônio e essa herança, pois essas coleções representam o testemunho mais valioso de nossa impressionante biodiversidade, registros do nosso passado e janelas para o nosso futuro, essenciais à nossa soberania acadêmica, científica, cultural e social.

RESUMO Neste estudo, o yacon foi seco pelo uso de desidratação osmótica com pulso de vácuo como pré-tratamento seguida por secagem a vácuo (em diferentes temperaturas) ou secagem convectiva. O uso de desidratação osmótica e de vácuo na secagem teve sua influência avaliada com relação à cinética de secagem e à qualidade do produto final considerando a retenção de frutanos, cor e atividade de água. A segunda lei de Fick e a equação de Page se mostraram adequadas para o ajuste da evolução da secagem. Observou-se que temperaturas mais altas (60 °C) levaram a tempos de secagem menores, maiores difusividades efetivas, e maior retenção de frutanos, quando comparada a 40 e 50 °C. O pré-tratamento osmótico e a secagem a vácuo diferiram (p ≤ 0.05) na retenção de frutanos. Além disto, o produto seco pré-tratado osmoticamente apresentou menores tempos de secagem. A melhor condição foi a secagem a vácuo a 60 ºC precedida por desidratação osmótica com pulso de vácuo, que resultou na retenção de aproximadamente 38% de frutanos em um processo mais rápido, maior difusividade e um produto mais claro que nas demais condições testadas.

ABSTRACT In this study, the ‘yacon’ was dried using pulsed vacuum osmotic dehydration as pretreatment followed by vacuum drying (at different temperatures) or convective drying. The use of osmotic dehydration and vacuum drying had their influence evaluated concerning drying kinetics and quality of the final product, considering fructan retention, color, and water activity. Fick’s second law and Page’s equation were suitable for the fitting of drying evolution. It was observed that higher temperatures (60 °C) resulted in shorter drying time, higher diffusivity, and higher fructan retention when compared to 40 and 50 °C. The osmotic pretreatment and the vacuum drying differed in fructan retention (p ≤ 0.05). Moreover, the dried product, osmotically pretreated, presented a shorter drying time. The best condition was vacuum drying at 60 ºC, preceded by pulsed vacuum osmotic dehydration that resulted in fructan retention of approximately 38% in a quicker, higher diffusivity and lighter color product concerning the other tested conditions.
