ABSTRACT Vermiculite mining residues, although of low solubility, contain nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium at concentrations that allow their agricultural use. Beneficial bacteria can increase the solubility of this waste and its efficiency. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of bio-inoculation of vermiculite residue, associated with cattle manure, on the release of nutrients and initial growth of maize. A completely randomized design was performed in a greenhouse with seven treatments and four replications. The treatments were: T1 - soil without fertilization; T2 - soil fertilized with soluble sources of nutrients (conventional fertilization); T3 - application of vermiculite residue (VR); T4 - VR enriched with cattle manure (CM); T5 - VR + CM with Bacillus subtilis; T6 - VR + CM + B. amyloliquefaciens, and T7 - VR + CM +B. subtilis + B. amyloliquefaciens). Regardless of the use of cattle manure or beneficial microorganisms, vermiculite mining waste increased the availability of Ca and K in the soil, but was not able to match the soluble sources of nutrients. Mining waste associated with cattle manure and beneficial microorganisms (B. subtilis and B. amyloliquefaciens) increased microbial activity and enhanced the release of available calcium for maize. VR increased the growth and the dry mass production of maize compared to the non-fertilized soil, but was consistently inferior to conventional fertilizer.

RESUMO Os resíduos da mineração de vermiculita, embora de baixa solubilidade, contêm nutrientes como cálcio, magnésio e potássio em concentrações que permitem seu uso agrícola. Bactérias benéficas podem aumentar a solubilidade deste resíduo e sua eficiência. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência da bioinoculação do resíduo de vermiculita, associado ao esterco bovino, na liberação de nutrientes e no crescimento inicial do milho. Foi realizado delineamento inteiramente casualizado em casa de vegetação com sete tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram: T1 - solo sem adubação; T2 - solo adubado com fontes solúveis de nutrientes (fertilização convencional); T3 - aplicação de resíduo de vermiculita (VR); T4 - VR enriquecido com esterco bovino (CM); T5 -VR+CM com Bacillus subtilis; T6 - VR + CM + B. amyloliquefaciens e T7 - VR + CM + B. subtilis + B. amyloliquefaciens). O VR aumentou a disponibilidade de Ca e K no solo, porém seu desempenho foi inferior às fontes solúveis. Independentemente da utilização de esterco bovino ou de microrganismos benéficos, os resíduos da mineração de vermiculita aumentaram a disponibilidade de Ca e K no solo, mas não foram capazes de igualar as fontes solúveis de nutrientes. Os resíduos de mineração associados ao esterco bovino e aos microrganismos benéficos (B. subtilis e B. amyloliquefaciens) aumentaram a atividade microbiana e aumentaram a liberação de cálcio disponível para o milho. Os resíduos da mineração de vermiculita aumentaram o crescimento e a produção de massa seca do milho em comparação ao solo não fertilizado, mas foram consistentemente inferiores ao fertilizante convencional.

Resumo A verificação de mudanças morfológicas e fisiológicas sob diferentes condições luminosas em espécies frutíferas nativas em estágio juvenil é importante, uma vez que indicam o ambiente adequado para a formação de mudas com alto vigor. Objetivou-se verificar o crescimento e as alterações morfofisiológicas sob gradiente de sombreamento em mudas de feijoa (Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret) para obter mudas de boa qualidade, adequadas para fomentar os plantios da espécie em pomares. As mudas foram cultivadas por vinte e um meses sob quatro tratamentos de sombreamento (0%, 30%, 50% e 80%). Foram avaliados parâmetros de crescimento, pigmentos fotossintéticos, trocas gasosas, fluorescência da clorofila e anatomia foliar. Mudas a pleno sol e 30% de sombra apresentaram maior crescimento em altura, diâmetro e acúmulo de massa seca, devido à maior taxa de fotossíntese. Como principais mecanismos de aclimatação sob 80% de sombra, as mudas desenvolveram maior área foliar, redução da espessura do limbo foliar e aumento do rendimento quântico do fotossistema II. Mesmo assim, a assimilação líquida de CO2 e a taxa de transporte de elétrons foram menores e, consequentemente, houve restrição ao crescimento e acúmulo de massa seca das mudas no maior nível de sombreamento. Portanto, para a obtenção de mudas de feijoa de maior qualidade, recomendamos que seja realizada a pleno sol ou até 30% de sombra, para maximizar o vigor das mudas em viveiros e, posteriormente, este ambiente de luz também pode ser utilizado em pomares para favorecer o crescimento e a produção de frutos.

Abstract Understanding morphological and physiological changes under different light conditions in native fruit species in juveniles’ stage is important, as it indicate the appropriate environment to achieve vigorous saplings. We aimed to verify growth and morphophysiological changes under shade gradient in feijoa (Acca sellowiana (O. Berg) Burret) to achieve good quality saplings adequate to improve cultivation in orchards. The saplings were grown for twenty-one-month under four shading treatments (0%, 30%, 50%, and 80%). Growth, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchanges, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf anatomy parameters were evaluated. Saplings under full sun and 30% shade had higher height and diameter growth and dry mass accumulation due to higher photosynthesis rate. As main acclimatization mechanisms in feijoa saplings under 80% shade were developed larger leaf area, reduced leaf blade thickness, and enhanced quantum yield of photosystem II. Even so, the net CO2 assimilation and the electron transport rate was lower and, consequently, there was a restriction on the growth and dry mass in saplings under deep shade. Therefore, to obtain higher quality feijoa saplings, we recommend that it be carried out in full sun or up to 30% shade, to maximize the sapling vigor in nurseries and, later, this light environment can also be used in orchards for favor growth and fruit production.

Abstract: We propose reading the short story Über das Marionettentheater (1810) through the dimension of illustration, a dimension marked by the communication between text and image. The visual dimension of Kleist’s text shows that, although of verbal existence, the puppet is an active image around which the text organizes itself, creating new visualities for the exercise of reflection. To this end, we use Renée R. Hubert’s (1988) study on the importance of this text for 20th century surrealist illustrators and Carina Zanelato Silva’s (2018; 2019) reading of the paradox in Kleist. We seek to contribute to understanding Kleist as an artist whose work dialogues with the visual arts.

Resumo: Propomos uma leitura do conto Über das Marionettentheater (1810) a partir da ideia de que ele pode ser lido pela dimensão da ilustração, marcada pela comunicação entre texto e imagem. A dimensão visual do texto de Kleist mostra que, embora de existência verbal, a marionete se constitui como uma imagem ativa, ao redor da qual o texto se organiza e cria novas imagens para o exercício da reflexão. Para tanto, utilizamos Renée R. Hubert (1988) sobre a importância desse texto para os desenhistas do século XX com a ilustração surrealista e na leitura de Carina Z. Silva (2018; 2019) do paradoxo em Kleist. Buscamos contribuir com o entendimento de Kleist como um artista que dialoga com as artes plásticas a partir da própria natureza de sua obra.

ABSTRACT Light is essential for providing energy for photosynthetic reactions and has a complex and not yet fully understood effect on heliconia growth and yield. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of light intensity on the growth and photosynthesis of heliconia under semi-arid conditions and to screen potential genotypes tolerant to high solar irradiation levels during the vegetative stage. The experiment was conducted in Petrolina, PE, Brazil, whose geographic coordinates are 09° 19’ 14” S, 40° 32’ 40” W, with an average altitude of 387 m. The experimental design used was in randomized blocks, arranged in a split-plot scheme, and the treatments were composed of two light intensities (full sun and 50% shading) and five genotypes (Heliconia psittacorum x H. spathocircinata cv. Golden Torch; H. psittacorum cv. Red Opal; H. bihai cv. Lobster Claw Two; H. rauliniana and H. rostrata). Growth and gas exchange assessments were conducted on the 100th day after the trial initiation. Light intensity (full sun and 50% shading) did not influence the rates of photosynthesis (A), stomatal conductance (gs), or transpiration (E) of plants. However, the isolated effect of the genotype revealed that plants of cv. Red Opal, H. bihai, H. rauliniana, and cv. Golden Torch had higher values of A, gs, and E. Overall, shading improved plant growth. We conclude that the genotypes H. psittacorum cv. Red Opal, and H. psittacorum cv. Golden Torch exhibited the greatest tolerances to high solar irradiance conditions.

RESUMO A luz é essencial por fornecer energia para as reações fotossintéticas e tem uma influência complexa e não totalmente compreendida no crescimento e produção de helicônias. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da intensidade de luz sobre o crescimento e fotossíntese de helicônias em condições semiáridas e a triagem de genótipos potenciais tolerantes as condições de altos níveis de irradiação solar durante o estágio vegetativo. O experimento foi conduzido em Petrolina-PE, Brasil, cujas coordenadas geográficas são: 09° 19’ 14” S, 40° 32’ 40” O, com altitude média de 387 m. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, arranjados em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, e os tratamentos foram compostos por duas intensidades de luz (pleno sol e sombreamento de 50%) e cinco genótipos (Heliconia psittacorum x H. spathocircinata cv. Golden Torch; H. psittacorum cv. Red Opal; H. bihai cv. Lobster Claw Two; H. rauliniana e H. rostrata). No 100° dia após o início do experimento foram realizadas avaliações de crescimento e trocas gasosas. As intensidades de luz (pleno sol e sombreamento 50%) não influenciaram a taxa fotossintética (A), condutância estomática (gs) e transpiração (E) das plantas. Porém, o efeito isolado do genótipo revela que plantas de cv. Red Opal, H. bihai, H. rauliniana e cv. Golden Torch apresentaram maiores valores de A, gs e E. Em geral, o sombreamento favoreceu maior incremento no crescimento das plantas. Conclui-se que os genótipos H. psittacorum cv. Red Opal e H. psittacorum cv. Golden Torch exibem maior tolerância às condições de elevada irradiância solar.

ABSTRACT Coffee plantations installed at high altitudes and near forested areas have been highly infested with Anredera cordifolia. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of different pre- and post-emergence herbicide treatments on A. cordifolia after mechanical mowing. A field experiment was carried out in a coffee plantation with natural infestation of A. cordifolia in a completely randomized design with a split-plot scheme and four replicates, in which the main plot an herbicides application and the subplot was the days after the initial application (DAI). The treatments were as follows: saflufenacil + glyphosate (70 + 960 g a.i. ha-1); chlorimuron + glyphosate (80 + 960 g a.i. ha-1); metsulfuron + glyphosate (6 + 960 g a.i. ha-1); flumioxazin + glyphosate (25 + 960 g a.i. ha-1), and glyphosate (960 g a.i. ha-1); with sequential application of glyphosate (960 g a.i. ha-1); glyphosate + indaziflam (960 + 75 g a.i. ha-1); indaziflam (75 g a.i. ha-1); and a control without herbicide application. Mechanical control, followed by the application of the treatments flumioxazin + glyphosate and metsulfuron + glyphosate in the first application and sequential application of indaziflam, proved to be effective. Control of this weed should be based on the removal of its plant residues from the field to reduce the regrowth and germination of aerial tubers.

RESUMO Plantações de café instaladas em altitudes elevadas e próximas a áreas florestais têm sido altamente infestadas por Anredera cordifolia. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia de diferentes tratamentos herbicidas pré e pós-emergência sobre A. cordifolia após roçada mecânica. Para tanto, foi conduzido um experimento de campo em uma lavoura de café com infestação natural de A. cordifolia em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com esquema de parcelas subdivididas com quatro repetições, sendo a parcela principal os tratamentos com aplicação de herbicida e a subparcela os dias após a aplicação inicial (DAI). Os tratamentos foram compostos por: saflufenacil + glifosato (70 + 960 g i. a. ha-1); clorimuron + glifosato (80 + 960 g i. a. ha-1); metsulfuron + glifosato (6 + 960 g i. a. ha-1); flumioxazin + glyphosate (25 + 960 g i. a. ha-1) e glifosato (960 g i. a. ha-1); com uma aplicação sequencial de: glifosato (960 g i. a. ha-1); (6) glifosato + indaziflam (960 g i. a. ha-1); e indaziflam (75 g i. a. ha-1), além de uma testemunha sem aplicação de herbicida. O manejo integrado é fundamental para o controle adequado de A. cordifolia, devido ao seu desenvolvimento vegetativo agressivo. O controle mecânico, seguido da aplicação dos tratamentos flumioxazin + glyphosate e metsulfuron + glyphosate na primeira aplicação e indaziflam sequencial mostrou-se eficaz. O controle dessa planta daninha deve ser baseado na remoção de seus resíduos vegetais do campo para reduzir a rebrota e a germinação de tubérculos aéreos.

ABSTRACT Water supply quality, nutrient availability in irrigation solutions, and discharge water or effluents must be monitored for protected cultivation to achieve sustainable management of food production. This study aimed to evaluate whether effluent solution from mini-tomato-protected crops can be recycled in an irrigation system based on plant nutritional demands. The experiment was carried out on a farm with mini-tomato protected-cropping. Water supply, as well as nutrient and effluent solutions, were analyzed in the experiment. Water supply was within the Brazilian limits established by CONAMA, except for nitrite, phosphorus, and sulfide. The effluent solution showed significant concentrations of macro- and micronutrients, highlighting phosphorus (220 to 395 mg L-1). The replacement of nutrient solution in the central fertigation tank, excess of elements applied in the nutrient solution, and accumulation of effluent solution in the disposal tank kept the effluent solution enriched when compared to the nutrient solution initially applied. Water quality monitoring showed that effluent solution can be reused in the irrigation system based on its physicochemical parameters and mini-tomato tomato nutritional demands. The analyses also allowed us to detect control points to achieve food production sustainability.

Abstract Sugarcane is a crop of major importance used mainly for sugar and biofuel production, and many additional applications of its byproducts are being developed. Sugarcane cultivation is plagued by many insect pests and pathogens that reduce sugarcane yields overall. Recently emerging studies have shown complex multitrophic interactions in cultivated areas, such as the induction of sugarcane defense-related proteins by insect herbivory that function against fungal pathogens that commonly appear after mechanical damage. Fungi and viruses infecting sugarcane also modulate insect behavior, for example, by causing changes in volatile compounds responsible for insect attraction or repelling natural vector enemies via a mechanism that increases pathogen dissemination from infected plants to healthy ones. Interestingly, the fungus Fusarium verticillioides is capable of being vertically transmitted to insect offspring, ensuring its persistence in the field. Understanding multitrophic complexes is important to develop better strategies for controlling pathosystems affecting sugarcane and other important crops and highlights the importance of not only studying binary interactions but also adding as many variables as possible to effectively translate laboratory research to real-life conditions.

Abstract This work describes the circulation over the continental slope and the São Paulo Plateau in the Santos Basin during the SANSED winter 2019 survey. The cruise consisted of four legs in the period between June, 11 and August, 03 2019. The observed circulation is dominated by the Atlantic southwestern boundary current regime and remotely-generated anticyclones and cyclones. The former is composed by the Brazil Current, the Intermediate Western Boundary Current and their mesoscale meanders; the latter are 300km vortical rings with origin in the eastern side of the South Atlantic Basin. A Lagrangian scheme applied over satellite altimeter maps indicate that the origin of these rings is primarily the Cape Basin of South Africa. The interaction between the boundary currents, their cyclonic meanders, and the anticyclonic rings is complex, and varies widely. During the SANSED winter 2019 survey period, three anticyclones interacted with the Brazil Current, instabilizing it, forming dipoles with the current cyclonic meanders, leading to their downstream propagation. Ancienter cyclonic eddies within Santos Basin may interfere with the propagation of the large anticyclones further south. In addition, the continuous arrival of remotely-originated anticyclones, the larger portion over the São Paulo Plateau presented a tendency of counter-clockwise circulation during the whole cruise period.

RESUMO A tripanossomíase bovina é causada pelo protozoário Trypanosoma vivax. A transmissão biológica ocorre apenas no continente africano pela mosca Tsé-tsé, de forma mecânica por dípteros hematófagos em todos os continentes, ou pelo compartilhamento de agulhas e por práticas associadas. O estudo teve como objetivo relatar o primeiro diagnóstico parasitológico, sorológico e molecular de T. vivax em bovinos leiteiros provenientes de cinco propriedades do município de Unaí, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Cento e quinze animais selecionados por conveniência apresentavam sinais clínicos ou pertenciam a lotes de animais suspeitos. Foram detectados positivos pelos testes parasitológico (técnica de Woo), sorológico (ELISA) e molecular (LAMP). A maior prevalência global para T. vivax foi de 11,11% na propriedade A. O único sinal clínico dos animais positivos estudados foi baixa taxa de concepção. O primeiro diagnóstico de tripanossomíase no noroeste mineiro é extremamente importante, haja vista o tamanho do rebanho leiteiro da região e as possíveis perdas econômicas provocadas pela enfermidade. Ademais, faz-se necessário maior controle sanitário na região, uma vez que a transmissão no Brasil é intimamente ligada às práticas de compartilhamento de agulhas no manejo dos animais e ao parasitismo de moscas hematófagas.

Abstract Management programs and efficient techniques are necessary to recover degraded ecosystems. The sewage sludge is rich in nitrogen (N) and with the potential to fertilize Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapinales: Sapindaceae), used in the recovery of degraded areas; this can affect the insect fauna. The study's objective was to evaluate, for 24 months, the abundance of chewing insects, dipterans, pollinators, and predators on S. saponaria plants fertilized with or without dehydrated sewage sludge in a degraded area. The experimental design was completely randomized (with the same characteristics) with two treatments (with or without dehydrated sewage sludge) and 24 replicates, each with one plant. The abundance of Anastrepha sp. (Tephritidae), Cerotoma sp. (Chrysomelidae), Curculionidae, Musca domestica L. (Muscidae), Mantis religiosa L. (Mantodea: Mantidae), Oxyopidae, Salticidae, Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera), and Teudis sp. (Anyphaenidae) was higher on fertilized plants. The abundances of Teudis sp. and Tmarus sp. (Thomisidae) and M. religiosa and Teudis sp. were positively correlated with chewing insects and Diptera, respectively. The population increase of insects and spiders on S. saponaria plants fertilized with dehydrated sewage sludge (bigger crowns) has shown to be suitable for recovering degraded areas with a higher number of niches and better food quality, improving the ecological indices of the area.

Resumo A degradação de ecossistemas torna necessário programas de manejo e técnicas eficientes para recuperá-los. O lodo de esgoto é rico em nitrogênio e com potencial para adubar Sapindus saponaria L. (Sapinales: Sapindaceae), utilizada na recuperação de áreas degradadas, mas isto pode afetar a fauna de insetos. O objetivo foi avaliar, durante 24 meses, abundância de insetos mastigadores, dípteros, polinizadores e predadores em plantas de S. saponaria fertilizadas ou não com lodo de esgoto desidratado, em área degradada. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualisado com dois tratamentos (com ou sem lodo desidratado de esgoto) e 24 repetições, cada uma com uma planta. A abundância de Anastrepha sp. (Tephritidae), Cerotoma sp. (Chrysomelidae), Curculionidae, Musca domestica L. (Muscidae), Mantis religiosa L. (Mantodea: Mantidae), Oxyopidae, Salticidae, Tettigoniidae (Orthoptera) e Teudis sp. (Anyphaenidae) foi maior em plantas adubadas. A abundância de Teudis sp. e Tmarus sp. (Thomisidae) e M. religiosa e Teudis sp. foi, positivamente, correlacionada com as de insetos mastigadores e Diptera, respectivamente. O aumento populacional de insetos e aranhas em plantas de S. saponaria, adubada com lodo desidratado de esgoto (maiores copas), mostra ser adequado para a recuperação de áreas degradadas, tendo essas plantas um maior número de nichos e com alimento de melhor qualidade, melhorando os índices ecológicos na área.

ABSTRACT: Porcine enzootic pneumonia (PES), mainly caused by the bacteria Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, is the main cause of respiratory problems in pigs. Infection by M. hyopneumoniae leads to production losses and the predisposition of affected animals to secondary infections, which may result in the condemnation of carcasses and organs due to lung lesions at the time of slaughter. The objective of the research was to evaluate the infection by M. hyopneumoniae in pigs submitted to slaughter in São Luís Island/MA, using molecular and histopathological diagnostic methods. One hundred fifty lung samples were collected from inspected (n=65) and non-inspected (n=85) slaughter pigs on São Luís Island, Maranhão, from July 2019 to August 2021. Of the 150 DNA samples collected, 121 showed an amplified product for Cyt B in the PCR assay. Thus, 121 samples were submitted to qPCR of M. hyopneumoniae, of which 44 (36.36%) showed positive results. The mean amount of bacterial load ranged from 1.20 × 101 to 7.20 × 104, with a mean of 1.73 × 104 copies. Of the reagent samples, 81.81% (36 samples) were obtained from non-inspected slaughter, while 18.18% (8 samples) were obtained from slaughterhouses. In the histopathological analysis, 44 positive qPCR samples were evaluated, of which 28 (63.63%) presented results compatible with the main inflammatory process associated with the presence of M. hyopneumoniae, that is, bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue hyperplasia (BALT). Three samples that showed the highest bacterial load (qPCR: 5.63 × 10³, 2.19 × 104 and 7.23 × 104) showed more evident lesions in this study. The microscopic findings associated with the quantifications indicated a relationship between the amount of bacterial load and the presence of microscopic lesions; higher bacterial load in lung tissue is associated with increased histopathologic staining for BALT hyperplasia. In conclusion, the results point to the circulation of the etiological agent in the sampled animals and the need for preventive measures on pig farms in Maranhão with the involvement of producers, sanitary defense and inspection agencies.

RESUMO: A pneumonia enzoótica suína (PES), causada principalmente pela bactéria Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, é a principal causa de problemas respiratórios em suínos. A infecção por M. hyopneumoniae leva a perdas produtivas e a predisposição dos animais acometidos a infecções secundárias, o que pode resultar em condenação de carcaças e órgãos por lesões pulmonares no momento do abate. O objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar a infecção por M. hyopneumoniae em suínos submetidos ao abate na Ilha de São Luís, por meio de métodos diagnósticos moleculares e histopatológicos. Para isso, foram coletadas 150 amostras de pulmão de suínos de abate inspecionado (n=65) e não inspecionado (n=85) na Ilha de São Luís/Maranhão, no período de julho de 2019 a agosto de 2021. Das 150 amostras de DNA coletadas, 121 apresentaram produto amplificado para Cyt B no ensaio de PCR. Assim, 121 amostras foram submetidas à qPCR de M. hyopneumoniae, das quais 44 (36,36%) apresentaram resultados positivos. A quantidade média de carga bacteriana variou de 1,20 × 101 a 7,20 × 104, com média de 1,73 × 104 cópias. Das amostras reagentes, 81,81% (36 amostras) foram obtidas de abate não inspecionado, enquanto 18,18% (8 amostras) foram obtidas em abatedouro. Na análise histopatológica, foram avaliadas 44 amostras positivas para qPCR, das quais 28 (63,63%) apresentaram resultados compatíveis com o principal processo inflamatório associado à presença de M. hyopneumoniae, ou seja, hiperplasia do tecido linfóide associado ao brônquio (BALT). Três amostras que apresentaram maior carga bacteriana (qPCR: 5,63 × 10³, 2,19 × 104 e 7,23 × 104) foram mais evidentes neste estudo. Os achados microscópicos associados às quantificações indicaram uma relação entre a quantidade de carga bacteriana e a presença de lesão microscópica; a maior carga bacteriana no tecido pulmonar está associada a maior alteração histopatológica para hiperplasia BALT. Em conclusão, os resultados obtidos sinalizam para a circulação do agente etiológico nos animais amostrados e a necessidade de medidas preventivas nas criações de suínos do estado do Maranhão com envolvimento dos produtores, órgãos de defesa sanitária e inspeção.

Abstract The objective was to classify the nutritional status and investigate the factors associated with the prevalence of obesity among students from public and private elementary schools in Maceio. This is a cross-sectional study with a probability sample of 1510 students (9.8 ± 0.5 years) from public (n=931) and private (n=579) schools. Socioeconomic, demographic, anthropometric and dietary data were obtained. Nutritional status was defined by anthropometry according to WHO criteria. Obesity was defined as BMI-for-age >2 z. The measure of association was the prevalence ratio (PR) and respective 95% CI, calculated by Poisson regression. Only 1.2% of those investigated had stunting. The prevalence of obesity was higher among students from the private network (22.1% vs. 10.3%; PR=2.14; 95%CI=1.66; 2.76). In the crude analysis, obesity was associated with lower number of residents at home, buying snacks at school canteens, not being a user of government assistance programs, greater consumption of unhealthy foods and attending a private school. In the adjusted analysis, only this last variable remained associated (p<0.05), possibly due to the fact that most of the other predictors occurred more frequently in the context of private establishments. Obesity is the main nutritional disorder found among elementary school students in Maceio, a condition that is independently associated with attending a private school.

Resumen Este estudio tuvo como objetivo clasificar el estado nutricional e investigar los factores asociados a la prevalencia de obesidad entre estudiantes de escuelas públicas y privadas de Maceió. Se trata de un estudio transversal con una muestra aleatoria de 1510 estudiantes (9,8 ± 0,5 años) que asisten a escuelas públicas (n = 931) y privadas (n = 579), del que se obtuvieron datos socioeconómicos, demográficos, antropométricos y dietéticos. El estado nutricional se definió por antropometría según los criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS). La obesidad se definió como IMC para la edad > 2 z. La medida de asociación fue la razón de prevalencia (PR) y su IC 95 %, calculada por regresión de Poisson. Solo el 1,2 % de los investigados presentaba baja estatura para la edad y la prevalencia de obesidad fue mayor entre estudiantes de la red privada (22,1 % vs. 10,3 %; RP = 2,14, IC 95% : 1,66; 2,76). En el análisis crudo estaban asociados con la obesidad el menor número de integrantes de la familia, comprar almuerzo en la cantina de la escuela, no ser usuarios de programas de asistencia del Gobierno, mayor consumo de alimentos no saludables y la asistencia a escuela privada. En el análisis ajustado, solo esta última variable se mantuvo asociada (p < 0,05). La obesidad es el principal problema nutricional entre los alumnos de enseñanza básica de Maceió, condición que se asocia de forma independiente al hecho de asistir a una escuela privada.

Resumo Objetivou-se classificar o estado nutricional e investigar os fatores associados à prevalência de obesidade entre escolares do ensino fundamental público e privado de Maceió. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com amostra probabilística de 1.510 alunos (9,8±0,5 anos) de escolas públicas (n=931) e privadas (n=579). Obtiveram-se dados socioeconômicos, demográficos, antropométricos e dietéticos. O estado nutricional foi estabelecido por antropometria segundo os critérios da OMS. A obesidade foi definida por IMC-para-idade >2 z. A medida de associação foi a razão de prevalência (RP) e respectivo IC95%, calculados por regressão de Poisson. Apenas 1,2% dos investigados apresentaram déficit estatural. A prevalência de obesidade foi maior entre os alunos da rede privada (22,1% vs. 10,3%; RP=2,14; IC95%=1,66-2,76). Na análise bruta associaram-se à obesidade: menor número de moradores no domicílio; comprar lanche na cantina da escola; não ser usuário de programas assistenciais do governo; maior consumo de alimentos não saudáveis; e pertencer à escola privada. Na análise ajustada, apenas esta última variável manteve-se associada (p<0,05), possivelmente, pelo fato de a maioria dos demais preditores ocorrer com maior frequência no âmbito dos estabelecimentos particulares. A obesidade é o principal agravo nutricional encontrado entre os alunos do ensino fundamental de Maceió, condição que se associa, de forma independente, ao fato de pertencer à escola privada.

Abstract In the cropping systems that integrate the corn crop, the insertion of Crotalaria ochroleuca G. Don is predominantly intercropped. In this context, there is a need to observe herbicides that present selectivity for this sunn hemp species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the selectivity of pre and post-emergent herbicides on C. ochroleuca. Two field experiments were conducted in randomized blocks with four replications, involving the pre-emergence and post-emergence application of different herbicide treatments. For the pre-emergent ones, amicarbazone, atrazine and flumioxazin provided phytotoxicity higher than 90% and, consequently, low plant biomass. On the other hand, acetochlor and s-metolachlor did not cause phytotoxicity and did not affect the dry mass of crotalaria. In post-emergence, atrazine + mesotrione showed phytotoxicity >95%, followed by nicosulfuron and 2.4-D with phytotoxicity between 50-60%, whereas tembotrione did not cause injury to the plants. Thus, it was found that among the pre-emergent, acetochlor and s-metolachlor were selective, and for the emerging powders, only tembotrione was the most selective for all parameters analyzed.

Resumo Nos sistemas de cultivo que integram a cultura do milho, a inserção de Crotalaria ochroleuca G. Don é predominantemente consorciada. Nesse contexto, há a necessidade de se observar herbicidas que apresentem seletividade para esta espécie de crotalária. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a seletividade de herbicidas pré e pós-emergentes sobre C. ochroleuca. Dois experimentos de campo foram conduzidos em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, envolvendo a aplicação de diferentes tratamentos herbicidas em pré-emergência e pós-emergência. Para os pré-emergentes, amicarbazone, atrazina e flumioxazin proporcionaram fitotoxicidade superior a 90% e, consequentemente, baixa biomassa vegetal. Por outro lado, o acetocloro e o s-metolacloro não causaram fitotoxicidade e não afetaram a massa seca da crotalária. Em pós-emergência, atrazina + mesotrione apresentou fitotoxicidade >95%, seguido de nicosulfuron e 2,4-D com fitotoxicidade entre 50-60%, enquanto o tembrotrione não causou danos às plantas. Assim, verificou-se que entre os pré-emergentes, o acetocloro e o s-metolacloro foram seletivos, e para os pós emergentes, apenas o tembotrione foi o mais seletivo para todos os parâmetros analisados.

Abstract Although widely used in medicine, separation technology, and other fields, the effects of cyclodextrins on the activities of phosphoryl transfer enzymes have not been previously evaluated. In vivo studies evaluated the function of cyclodextrins as active compounds. Despite the use of cyclodextrins as active compounds, the effects of cyclodextrins on hepatic and renal tissues remain to be fully elucidated. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of β- cyclodextrins, methyl-β-cyclodextrin (M-β- cyclodextrins), and (2-hydroxypropyl)-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-cyclodextrins) on enzyme activities regulating the maintenance of energy homeostasis in the kidney and liver tissues in relation to toxicity. Serum levels of liver and kidney markers were measured, and oxidative stress parameters were assessed. After 60-day treatments, we observed that the administration of β-cyclodextrins and M-β-cyclodextrins inhibited the hepatic activity of pyruvate kinase, an irreversible enzyme within the glycolytic pathway. Additionally, administration of HP-β-cyclodextrins inhibited creatine kinase activity and increased the total sulfhydryl content in kidneys. Here, we demonstrated for the first time that β-cyclodextrins, M-β-cyclodextrins, and HP-β-cyclodextrins cause bioenergetic dysfunction in renal and hepatic tissues. These findings suggest that understanding the balance between cyclodextrins’ efficacy and adverse effects is essential for better accepting their use in medicine.

In this work, mixtures of ceramic powders containing Al2O3 with different amounts of Y2O3 (1%, 3%, 5% and 10wt.%) along their cross-section were fabricated to obtain multilayer composites based on Al2O3 with different levels of Y3Al5O12 (YAG) as reinforcement. Monolithic cylindrical multilayer Al2O3 blocks were compacted and subsequentially, sintered at 1610°C for 4h. Phase stability, microstructural aspects, and physical and mechanical properties of the specimens were acquired by relative density, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, Young’s modulus and biaxial flexural strength measurements. The results indicated that monolithic alumina specimens exhibited relative density of 98%, with average hardness of 1203 ±83 HV, fracture toughness of 2.1 ±0.8 MPa.m1/2 and flexural strength of 187 ±64 MPa. Progressive incorporation of Y2O3 into the chemical composition of the specimens led to formation of the YAG phase by solid state reaction during sintering, which reduced hardness and increased densification, fracture toughness and flexural strength, with average values of HV=1023 ±28 HV, KIC=3.5 ±0.3 MPa.m1/2, σf=273 ±58 MPa and 14% Y3Al5O12 for the specimens with 10wt.% Y2O3. This improvement is probably associated with toughness mechanisms, such as crack deflection and residual thermal stresses between the phases present in the composites.
