Abstract This study aimed to compare the effects of nandrolone decanoate on the morphology and physiology of ovarian tissues in two experimental models, Zebrafish and rats, after in vitro cultivation. A total of 136 animals were used (Wistar rats, n=36, and Zebrafish, n=100). In both experiments, the animals were divided into two groups (Control and Deca) and were exposed to nandrolone decanoate for seven weeks. At the end of the administrations, the animals were euthanized, and the tissues were collected for morphological and biochemical analyses. Data were expressed as mean ± SEM. Tukey and Shapiro-Wilk tests were used. ANOVA and chi-square tests were applied for group comparisons. Differences were considered significant when P<0.05. The results showed an increase in body weight in Wistar rats, while Zebrafish body weight was decreased. In both experiments, the number of atretic follicles increased throughout the in vitro culture, from day 0 to day 7, in the Control group (CTRLr and CTRLz), while in the DECA group (DECAr and DECAz), atretic follicles were reduced from D0 to D7. The antioxidant environment, represented by increased the thiol content, which was significantly higher on day zero in CTRLz compared to CTRLr. SOD activity increased in Zebrafish (group DECAz), while CAT activity decreased in both models (group DECAr and DECAz). In conclusion, the study demonstrated similarity in ovarian physiology between the models exposed or not exposed to nandrolone decanoate, suggesting that, when convenient, researchers could consider changing the experimental model.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar a rede social de mães, pais ou responsáveis por crianças ou adolescentes transgêneros. Métodos Trata-se de estudo qualitativo, fundamentado no referencial de rede social, com enfoque na rede primária. O estudo foi desenvolvido no Brasil por meio de entrevistas online entre agosto e outubro de 2021. Participaram 30 mães, dois pais e uma avó de crianças ou adolescentes transgêneros. Realizou-se análise de conteúdo, modalidade temática, com auxílio do software IRaMuTeQ. Resultados A temática “A família enquanto centro da rede e os desafios para o alcance da autonomia trans” emergiu a partir das análises. A família configurou-se como primeira rede, com maior responsabilização. Revelaram-se vínculos frágeis e conflituosos com familiares, amigos, colegas e vizinhos, destacando a figura do homem. Conclusão As redes apresentaram limitações no apoio e necessidade de fortalecimento, sendo a análise uma importante ferramenta na assistência, estruturação de políticas e linha de cuidado transespecífica.

RESUMEN Objetivo Analizar la red social de madres, padres o responsables de niños y adolescentes transgénero. Métodos Se trata de un estudio cualitativo, basado en el marco de referencia de la red social, con enfoque en la red primaria. El estudio se llevó a cabo en Brasil a través de entrevistas en línea entre agosto y octubre de 2021. Participaron 30 madres, dos padres y una abuela de niños, o adolescentes transgénero. Se realizó un análisis de contenido temático con la ayuda del software IRaMuTeQ. Resultados El tema “La familia como centro de la red y los desafíos para alcanzar la autonomía trans” surgió a partir de los análisis. La familia se configuró como la primera red, con una mayor responsabilidad. Se revelaron vínculos frágiles y conflictivos con familiares, amigos, colegas y vecinos, destacando la figura del hombre. Conclusión Las redes presentaron limitaciones en el apoyo y la necesidad de fortalecimiento, siendo el análisis una herramienta importante para la asistencia, la estructuración de políticas y la implementación de una línea de atención específica para personas trans.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the social network of mothers, fathers or guardians of transgender children or adolescents. Methods This was a qualitative study, based on the theoretical framework of social network, with a focus on the primary network. The study was conducted in Brazil through online interviews between August and October 2021. A total of 30 mothers, two fathers and one grandmother of transgender children or adolescents participated in the study. The thematic content analysis was performed using IraMuTeQ software. Results The theme “The family as the center of the network and the challenges in achieving transgender autonomy” emerged from the analyses. The family was identified as the first network, bearing the greatest responsibility. Weak and conflicted ties with relatives, friends, classmates and neighbors, highlighting the role of men. Conclusion The networks showed limitations in providing support and the need for strengthening. The analysis is an important tool for improving care, structuring policies and developing transgender-specific care pathways.

RESUMO O presente estudo objetivou realizar uma revisão sistemática sobre a eficácia da intervenção em Mindfulness nas funções executivas de crianças e adolescentes. Busca-se responder à seguinte pergunta “As intervenções baseadas em Mindfulness são eficazes para aprimoramento das funções executivas de crianças e adolescentes?”, a partir de critérios de elegibilidade preestabelecidos e considerando um recorte temporal de artigos publicados na íntegra entre 2017 e 2022. As buscas foram realizadas nas bases de dados: Web of Science, PsycNet, Scopus, CINAHL e Medline, utilizando os seguintes descritores: Mindfulness; Executive functions; Interventions; Adolescent; Children e Randomized controlled trials, tanto de forma isolada como cruzados na combinação de palavras com os operadores boleanos AND e OR. A partir das estratégias de busca, foram encontrados 769 estudos, no qual 8 atenderam aos critérios estabelecidos. As evidências dos estudos sugerem que as intervenções de Mindfulness apresentam resultados positivos nas funções executivas de crianças e adolescentes típicos, com aprimoramento da autorregulação e controle inibitório, potencializando a prontidão escolar e o processo de aprendizagem. Porém, assim como nos achados da revisão anterior, os estudos demonstram heterogeneidade quanto aos instrumentos e procedimentos de Mindfulness utilizados.

Abstract The present study aimed to conduct a systematic review on the effectiveness of Mindfulness intervention on the executive functions of children and adolescents. Seeking to answer the following question: ‘Are Mindfulness-based interventions effective for enhancing the executive functions of children and adolescents?’ Using pre-established eligibility criteria and considering a time frame of articles published in full from 2017 to the year 2022. Searches were performed in the following databases: Web of Science, PsycNet, Scopus, CINAHL, and Medline, using the following keywords: Mindfulness; Executive functions; Interventions; Adolescent; children; and Randomized controlled trials, both individually and combined using the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”. From the search strategies 769 studies were found, of which 8 met the established criteria. The evidence from the studies suggests that Mindfulness interventions yield positive results in the executive functions of typical children and adolescents, enhancing self-regulation and inhibitory control, thereby boosting school readiness and the learning process. Similar to findings from the previous review, the studies show heterogeneity in terms of the Mindfulness instruments and procedures used.

Abstract The aim of this study was to explore the psychometric parameters of the Gratitude Questionnaire through the Item Response Theory (IRT), using the Graduated Response Model. Therefore, 533 respondents participated (Mage = 29.9), mostly women (67.7%). At the beginning, we checked the dimensionality of the scale, which supported a quadratic structure (CFI = 0.99; TLI = 0.99). The parameters of the items were performed separately for each factor, and the results indicated that all items adequately discriminate participants. The items of the Gift Recognition factor required a greater amount of theta to be fully endorsed and the Interpersonal Gratitude factor required less amount of theta to be the answer option, perhaps because it is better accepted socially. It is estimated that the objectives of the study were reached, knowing psychometric evidence of a measure that evaluates gratitude in a more inclusive perspective, recommending its use in future possibilities.

Resumo Objetivou-se explorar os parâmetros psicométricos do Cuestionario de Gratitud por meio da Teoria de Resposta ao Item (TRI), utilizando o Modelo de Resposta Graduada. Para tanto, participaram 533 respondentes (M idade = 29,9), a maioria mulheres (67,7%). Inicialmente, checou-se a dimensionalidade da escala, que apoiou uma estrutura quadrifatorial (CFI = 0,99; TLI = 0,99). Os parâmetros dos itens foram realizados separadamente para cada fator, e os resultados indicaram que todos os itens discriminam adequadamente os participantes. Os itens do fator Reconhecimento de Dons exigiram uma maior quantidade de theta para serem completamente endossados e o fator Gratidão Interpessoal demandou menor quantidade de theta para ser a opção de reposta, talvez por ser melhor aceito socialmente. Estima-se que os objetivos do estudo foram alcançados, conhecendo evidências psicométricas de uma medida que avalia a gratidão numa perspectiva mais integradora, recomendando-se o seu uso em possibilidades futuras.

Participaron 533 sujetos (M edad = 29,9), la mayoría mujeres (67,7%). Inicialmente, se verificó las dimensiones de la escala, que apoyó una estructura cuadrifatorial (CFI = 0,99; TLI = 0,99). Los parámetros de los ítems fueron realizados separadamente para cada factor, y los resultados indicaron que los ítems discriminan adecuadamente a los participantes. Los elementos del factor Reconocimiento de Dons requirieron una mayor cantidad de theta para ser completamente endosados y el factor Gratitud Interpersonal demandó menor cantidad de theta para ser la opción de respuesta, tal vez por ser mejor aceptado socialmente. Se estima que los objetivos del estudio se alcanzaron, conociendo evidencias psicométricas de una medida que evalúa la gratitud en una perspectiva más integradora, recomendándose su uso en posibilidades futuras.

RESUMO Os canabinoides compreendem os endocanabinoides, fitocanabinoides e os canabinoides sintéticos e desempenham ações no sistema nervoso central e periférico. Uma quantidade enorme de publicações tem sido lançada nos últimos anos, embora a cannabis seja conhecida por milênios. Os Departamentos Científicos da Academia Brasileira de Neurologia descreveram as evidências do uso médico em suas áreas. A literatura está em constantes mudanças e possíveis novas evidências podem surgir nos próximos dias ou meses. A prescrição dessas substâncias deve ser discutida com os pacientes e suas famílias, com conhecimento sobre eventos adversos e sua eficácia.

ABSTRACT Cannabinoids comprehend endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids, with actions both in the central and peripherical nervous systems. A considerable amount of publications have been made in recent years, although cannabis has been known for over a thousand years. Scientific Departments from the Brazilian Academy of Neurology described evidence for medical use in their areas. Literature is constantly changing, and possible new evidence can emerge in the next days or months. Prescription of these substances must be discussed with patients and their families, with knowledge about adverse events and their efficacy.

O artigo tem como objetivo a reflexão sobre o papel social das parteiras e sua relação com os serviços de saúde na comunidade rural de Lindoia, município de Itacoatiara, Amazonas. Nessa comunidade, há uma sala de parto onde atua uma auxiliar de enfermagem que se identifica como parteira, sendo que também atua como articuladora entre outras parteiras da localidade. Realizamos 13 entrevistas abertas e dez semiestruturadas para discutir a inserção das parteiras tradicionais na Unidade Básica de Saúde (UBS), buscando analisar as aproximações e os estranhamentos entre parteiras e equipe. Conclui-se que as parteiras da comunidade conquistaram um espaço importante na UBS, mas suas ações são limitadas e reguladas pela gestão e pela equipe de saúde. Entende-se que há necessidade de ampliarmos o diálogo intercultural entre os saberes biomédicos e tradicionais no cotidiano do cuidado em saúde.

This article reflects on the social role of traditional midwives and their relation with health services in the rural community of Lindóia in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. This community has a delivery room and nursing assistant who is acts as a midwife and articulator of other traditional midwives in the area. We conducted 13 open-ended interviews and ten semi-structured interviews to investigate the involvement of traditional midwives in a primary care center, comparing their responses with those of the health team. It was concluded that community midwives play an important role in the care center, although their activities are limited and regulated by the health facility manager and health team. There is a need to broaden intercultural dialogue between biomedical and traditional knowledge in everyday health care practice.

El objetivo de este artículo es la reflexión sobre el papel social de las comadronas y su relación con los servicios de salud en la comunidad rural de Lindóia, municipio de Itacoatiara, Amazonas. En esa comunidad, hay una sala de parto en donde actúa una auxiliar de enfermería que se identifica como comadrona, siendo que ella también actúa como articuladora entre otras comadronas de la localidad. Realizamos 13 entrevistas abiertas y diez semiestructuradas para discutir la inserción de las comadronas tradicionales en la Unidad Básica de Salud (UBS), buscando analizar las aproximaciones y los extrañamientos entre comadronas y equipo. Se concluye que las comadronas de la comunidad conquistaron un espacio importante en la UBS, pero sus acciones están limitadas y reguladas por la gestión y equipo de salud. Se entiende que hay necesidad de que ampliemos el diálogo intercultural entre los saberes biomédicos y tradicionales en el cotidiano del cuidado en salud.

Para subsidiar ações de promoção da educação alimentar e nutricional, abrangendo povos da floresta do estado do Amazonas, Brasil, cujo território faz fronteira com a Colômbia, além da visita de campo em 2018, fez-se necessário, concomitantemente, mapear na literatura como essa população vive e de que maneira o cuidado é prestado. A revisão de escopo buscou tópicos referentes ao modo de vida das mulheres e crianças na Amazônia, à dieta durante o período gestacional e do puerpério, a práticas de aleitamento, à introdução de alimentos sólidos ao bebê e aos cuidados dos serviços de saúde. Como resultado, foram recuperados 21 estudos multidisciplinares. Encontrou-se que a comida tradicional tem valor nutricional maior do que a industrializada, a culinária local é uma fonte de renda das mulheres indígenas no meio urbano e um elo entre etnias. Conclui-se que as pesquisas devem incorporar o paradigma da promoção da saúde e abranger temas como a aculturação indígena nos centros urbanos amazônicos, a chegada da internet nas aldeias e o papel do cuidado à distância, que necessitam ser investigados para melhor enfrentamento do problema.

ABSTRACT Malnutrition in the indigenous population is a current public health problem and a major cause of morbidity and mortality of children in these groups in Brazil. In order to support actions to promote food and nutrition education, including forest peoples from the state of Amazonas, Brazil, whose territory borders Colombia, in addition to the field visit in 2018, it was necessary, at the same time, to map the literature as this one. Population lives and how care is provided. The scope review sought topics related to the lifestyle of women and children in the Amazon, diet during pregnancy and the postpartum period, breastfeeding practices, the introduction of solid foods to the baby, and the care of health services. As a result, 21 multidisciplinary studies were retrieved. Traditional food has been found to have higher nutritional value than industrialized food, and local cuisine is a source of income for indigenous women in the urban environment and a link between ethnicities. It is concluded that the researches should incorporate the health promotion paradigm and cover themes such as indigenous acculturation in the Amazonian urban centers, the arrival of the internet in the villages and the role of distance care, which needs to be investigated to better address the problem.

Resumo Objetivo Descrever o intervalo de referência imunológico e hematológico de gestantes de baixo risco. Métodos Realizou-se uma análise retrospectiva, de um estudo básico e translacional, analisando o perfil hematológico e a imunofenotipagem das células TCD3 + , TCD4 + , TCD8 + , B e natural killer (NK) do sangue periférico de 79 gestantes de baixo risco e de 30 mulheres (controles) do estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. Resultados Não observamos diferenças significativas entre os perfis hematológicos do 2° e 3° trimestres. No entanto, houve redução das células B no 2° (média = 174 x 103 μL; p < 0,002) e no 3° trimestres (160 x 103 μL; p < 0,001), comparado como grupo controle (296 x 103 μL). A mediana das células NK foi menor no 2° (134 x 103 μL; p < 0,0004) e no 3° trimestres (100 x 103 μL; p < 0,0004), comparado com o grupo controle (183 x 103 μL). Porém, o percentual de TCD4+ e de TCD8+ aumentou no 2° e 3° trimestres em relação aos controles (TCD4 + : 2° trimestre = 59%; p < 0,001; 3° trimestre = 57%; p < 0,01; controle = 50%; e TCD8 + : 2° trimestre = 31%; p < 0,001; 3° trimestre = 36%; p < 0,01; controle = 24%). Conclusão Mulheres grávidas de baixo risco têm ~ 40% menos células B e NK no sangue periférico em comparação com mulheres não grávidas. Estes parâmetros podem melhorar a assistência à saúde das mães e contribuir para a definição de valores de referência para gestações normais.

Abstract Objective To describe the immunological and hematological reference intervals of low-risk pregnant women. Methods A cross-sectional retrospective database analysis of a basic and translational study analyzing the hematological evaluation blood counts and immunophenotyping of TCD3 + , TCD4 + , TCD8 + , B, and natural killer (NK) cells of the peripheral blood in 79 low-risk pregnant women and of 30 control women from the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, was performed. Results No significant differences were detected between the hematological profiles of the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Nevertheless, the median level of B cells decreased significantly in the 2nd (174 x 103 μL; p < 0.002) and 3rd trimesters (160 x 103 μL; p < 0.001), compared with the control group (296 x 103 μL). Similarly, the median level of NK cells was lower in the 2nd (134 x 103 μL; p < 0.0004) and 3rd trimesters (100 x 103 μL, p < 0.0004), compared with the control group (183 x 103 μL). In contrast, relative TCD4+ and TCD8+ levels increased in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters compared with the controls (TCD4 + : 2nd trimester = 59%; p < 0.001; 3rd trimester = 57%; p < 0.01; control = 50%; and TCD8 + : 2nd trimester = 31%; p < 0.001; 3rd trimester = 36%; p < 0.01; control = 24%). Conclusion Low-risk pregnant women have ~ 40% less B and NK cells in the peripheral blood, compared with non-pregnant women. These parameters may improve health assistance for mothers and contribute to define reference values for normal pregnancies.

RESUMO: Este estudo avaliou a resposta do feijão-fava (Phaseolus lunatus L.) a aplicação de lodo de curtume compostado na nodulação, absorção de N e crescimento. Durante oito anos, o composto foi aplicado em doses de: 0, 2.5, 5, 10, e 20 Mg ha-1 (base seca). As plantas de feijão-fava mostraram maior nodulação nos tratamentos com o composto. Entretanto, os nódulos encontrados nestes tratamentos apresentaram menor biomassa, tamanho e diversidade do que os observados no tratamento sem composto. A acumulação de N aumentou com a aplicação da maior dose do composto (20 Mg ha-1), enquanto que houve um aumento nos teores de crômio na parte aérea com o aumento das doses do composto. Desta forma, o uso do lodo de curtume compostado, em longo prazo, aumenta a acumulação de crômio, aumentando a nodulação, enquanto diminui a diversidade de rizóbios nos nódulos.

ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the responses of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) to application of composted tannery sludge on nodulation, N uptake and plant growth. For eight years, the compost was applied at rates of: 0, 2.5, 5, 10, and 20 Mg ha-1 (dry basis). Plants of lima bean showed higher nodulation in treatments with compost; however, nodules reported in these treatments presented lower biomass, size and diversity than those reported in treatment without compost. Accumulation of N increased with the application of the highest rate (20 Mg ha-1), while there was an increase in chromium content in shoot with the increase in compost rates. Thus, the use of composted tannery sludge, in long-term, increases the accumulation of chromium in plants, increasing nodulation, while decrease rhizobia diversity in nodules.

Abstract Hip joint prosthesis are structural components that still have some challenging problems such as the interaction of physical and biological properties between the stem and the human femur. Composite materials allow to obtain high strength structures with a large variety of modulus of elasticity and favorable characteristics in the context of orthopedic implants. Therefore, the objective of this work was the development of a prosthesis model with biopolymeric matrix, namely the polyurethane (PU) derived from castor oil, reinforced with fiberglass. The implants were made of pure PU, PU with fiberglass, and PU with glass fiber and calcium carbonate. The reinforcement was constructed in the form of a core to be inserted into the hip prosthesis. The core and stem prototypes were produced using three-dimensional printing techniques, and subsequently used in the manufacture of flexible silicone molds. The results showed good mechanical potentialities of this material for orthopedics applications.

Resumo A difusão global das tecnologias, utilizadas inclusive por profissionais e estudantes em instituições de saúde, facilita a captura e reprodução de imagens do paciente, muitas vezes sem prévio consentimento informado. Esta pesquisa pretendeu avaliar de forma ampla o conhecimento de estudantes sobre direitos de imagem do paciente. Trata-se de estudo observacional e com abordagem quantitativa, realizado com 263 estudantes dos cursos de odontologia e medicina. Entre os entrevistados, 115 (44%) declararam ter fotografado ou gravado em vídeo algum paciente, exame ou prontuário em determinado momento, e 192 (73%) relataram desconhecer a legislação a respeito do uso de imagens. Conclui-se que há lacuna na formação desses estudantes quanto a essa questão, já que esse procedimento está presente em toda a graduação e, na maioria das vezes, o consentimento do paciente é obtido de maneira não usual.

Abstract The global diffusion of technologies, used by people today, including professionals and students in health institutions, makes it easy to capture and reproduce patient images, often without the prior obtaining of an informed consent. It was intended to obtain an expanded assessment of students’ knowledge about patient image rights. This was an observational study, with a quantitative approach performed with 263 students from dentistry and medical courses. Among the interviewees, 115 (43.7%) students reported having photographed or filmed a patient examination or medical record at some point and 192 (73%) participants reported that they did not know about any legislation regarding inappropriate use of images. It could be concluded that there is a gap in the training of these students in the use of patient images since the capture of images is present during the entire graduation course and, most of the time, the consent of the patient was obtained in an unusual way.

Resumen La difusión global de las tecnologías, utilizadas incluso por los profesionales y estudiantes en las instituciones de salud, hace que la captura y reproducción de imágenes del paciente tenga lugar fácilmente, muchas veces sin la previa obtención del consentimiento informado. Se pretendió obtener una evaluación ampliada del conocimiento de los estudiantes sobre los derechos de imagen del paciente. Se trató de un estudio observacional, con un abordaje cuantitativo realizado con 263 estudiantes de las carreras de odontología y medicina. Entre los entrevistados, 115 (43,7%) estudiantes declararon haber fotografiado o filmado algún paciente, examen o historial en algún momento, y 192 (73%) participantes relataron no conocer ninguna legislación acerca del uso inadecuado de imágenes. Se puede concluir que hay una laguna en la formación de estos estudiantes frente al uso de imágenes del paciente ya que la captura de imágenes está presente durante toda la carrera de grado y, la mayoría de las veces, el consentimiento del paciente fue obtenido de manera no frecuente.

Resumo Contexto As cardiopatias podem causar alterações no formato das ondas da ultrassonografia vascular (UV) em vasos periféricos. Essas alterações, tipicamente bilaterais e sistêmicas, são pouco conhecidas e estudadas. Objetivo Avaliar as ondas periféricas da UV de pacientes idosos para identificar alterações decorrentes de cardiopatias. Métodos Foram estudados 183 pacientes idosos submetidos a UV periférica no ano de 2014. Resultados Foram avaliados 102 mulheres (55,7%) e 81 homens (44,3%) com idade entre 60 e 91 anos (média de 70,4±7,2 anos). Encontraram-se alterações pela UV em 84 pacientes (45,9%). Foram identificadas 138 alterações de oito dos 13 tipos descritos na literatura: arritmia, onda bisferiens de pico sistólico, baixa velocidade de pico sistólico, pulsatilidade em veias femorais, bradicardia, taquicardia, onda de pulso parvus tardus e onda de pulso alternans. Houve baixa concordância entre a presença e a não presença de alterações na UV e na avaliação cardiológica. Na análise específica das alterações, os exames tiveram uma concordância variável, que foi boa para o achado de taquicardia, moderada para arritmia e baixa para bradicardia. Não houve concordância entre a UV e os exames cardiológicos para as demais alterações. Conclusões É possível identificar determinadas alterações cardíacas em idosos por meio da análise do formato das ondas periféricas da UV. É importante reconhecer e relatar a presença dessas alterações, pela possibilidade de alertar para um diagnóstico ainda não identificado nesses pacientes. Entretanto, mais estudos são necessários para que seja definida a importância das alterações no formato das ondas Doppler periféricas no reconhecimento de cardiopatias.

Abstract Background Heart diseases can cause changes to vascular ultrasonography (VUS) waveforms in peripheral vessels. These changes are typically bilateral and systemic, they have been little studied, and little is known about them. Objective To assess peripheral VUS waveforms in elderly patients in order to identify changes caused by heart diseases. Methods During 2014, a total of 183 elderly patients were examined with peripheral VUS and the results were analyzed. Results The sample comprised 102 women (55.7%) and 81 men (44.3%) with ages ranging from 60 to 91 years (mean of 70.4±7.2 years). Abnormalities were identified in VUS waveforms in 84 patients (45.9%). A total of 138 abnormalities were identified and classified into eight of the 13 categories described in the literature, as follows: arrhythmia, systolic pulsus bisferiens, low peak systolic velocity, pulsatile flow in femoral veins, bradycardia, tachycardia, pulsus tardus et parvus and pulsus alternans. There was low agreement between presence/absence of VUS abnormalities and cardiological assessments. Analysis of specific abnormalities revealed variable levels of agreement between VUS and cardiological assessments, ranging from good for tachycardia, moderate for arrhythmia, to low for bradycardia. There was no agreement between VUS and cardiological examinations for the remaining categories of abnormalities. Conclusions Certain cardiac abnormalities can be identified in elderly patients by analysis of peripheral VUS waveforms. It is important to recognize and report the presence of these abnormalities because there is a possibility that they may serve to signal hitherto unidentified diagnoses in these patients. However, further studies are needed to determine the importance of changes to peripheral Doppler waveforms to recognition of heart diseases.
