ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to identify and evaluate the genomic stability of visceral leishmaniasis in naturally infected dogs. A total of 32 dogs participated in the study, 24 of which were asymptomatic animals, naturally infected, and 8 uninfected, used as a control group. The comet and micronucleus assay tests were performed on bone marrow cells obtained by means of aspiration puncture. For data analysis, the Shapiro-Wilk test was used to verify the normality of the data, and then the Mann-Whitney and T-tests for the comparison between the infected and control groups. The analysis of samples from naturally infected animals and healthy animals showed that the infection caused by the protozoan responsible for leishmaniasis was not able to induce DNA damage in the cells of the infected animals. In the results obtained through the micronucleus test, an increase in the number of micronuclei were observed in polychromatophilic erythrocytes in the medullary tissue of the infected group, when compared to the control group. As a main contribution, the results expressed in this study, consider that the comet and micronucleus assays are suitable for the biomonitoring of genomic stability in bone marrow cells of naturally infected dogs with visceral leishmaniasis.

RESUMO O objetivo deste artigo é identificar e avaliar a estabilidade genômica em células da medula óssea de cães com leishmaniose visceral naturalmente infectados. Um total de 32 cães participaram do estudo, sendo 24 animais assintomáticos, infectados naturalmente, e oito não infectados, utilizados como grupo controle. Os testes de ensaio de cometa e micronúcleo foram realizados em células da medula óssea obtidas por meio de punção aspirativa. Para análise dos dados, o teste de Shapiro- Wilk foi empregado para verificar a normalidade dos dados, e, em seguida, o teste de Mann-Whitney e o teste t para a comparação entre os grupos infectado e controle. A análise das amostras dos animais naturalmente infectados e dos animais saudáveis demonstrou que a infecção causada pelo protozoário responsável pela leishmaniose não foi capaz de induzir danos ao DNA das células dos animais infectados. Já nos resultados obtidos por meio do teste do micronúcleo, foi observado um aumento no número de micronúcleo em eritrócitos policromatofílicos no tecido medular do grupo infectado, quando comparado ao grupo controle, confirmando, assim, o potencial mutagênico da leishmaniose visceral em cães infectados naturalmente.

RESUMO Um filhote de porquinho-da-índia (Cavia porcellus) foi recebido para atendimento após histórico de ataque por cão. Na avaliação física, observou-se edema, dor e crepitação em membro pélvico direito, sugestivo de fratura. Na avaliação radiográfica, confirmou-se fratura Salter-Harris tipo I em epífise distal da tíbia. A resolução cirúrgica escolhida foi a associação de pino transarticular e coaptação externa com tala de Altman. O paciente teve acompanhamento radiográfico semanal e obteve alta médica no 35o dia de pós-cirúrgico, quando se observou consolidação com completo remodelamento ósseo.

ABSTRACT A guinea pig (Cavia porcellus) cub presented edema, pain, and crepitus in the right pelvic limb after being attacked by a dog. Radiographic examination revealed Salter-Harris type 1 fracture on the distal region of the tibia. The surgery technique to correct the fracture involved an association of transarticular pinning and external coaptation with Altman splint. After surgery, radiographs of the patient were performed weekly and on the 35th post-surgery day, the bone was completely remodeled and healed, and the animal was dismissed.

The scientific publication landscape is changing quickly, with an enormous increase in options and models. Articles can be published in a complex variety of journals that differ in their presentation format (online-only or in-print), editorial organizations that maintain them (commercial and/or society-based), editorial handling (academic or professional editors), editorial board composition (academic or professional), payment options to cover editorial costs (open access or pay-to-read), indexation, visibility, branding, and other aspects. Additionally, online submissions of non-revised versions of manuscripts prior to seeking publication in a peer-reviewed journal (a practice known as pre-printing) are a growing trend in biological sciences. In this changing landscape, researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology must re-think their priorities in terms of scientific output dissemination. The evaluation processes and institutional funding for scientific publications should also be revised accordingly. This article presents the results of discussions within the Department of Biochemistry, University of São Paulo, on this subject.

Abstract Objective: To compare the acute psychobiological and perceptual responses in normotensive and hypertensive men after resistance training sessions with different levels of social interaction: manual resistance training and free weights resistance training. Method: 26 men (14 normotensive, 40.29 ± 8.63 years, Body Mass Index: 26.53 ± 5.24 kg/m2; 12 hypertensive, 46.00 ± 9.13 years, Body Mass Index: 32.51 ± 4. 41 kg/m2) underwent single sessions of manual resistance training and free weights resistance training. Anxiety and mood were measured in pre- and post-intervention. In addition, a questionnaire was applied to identify positive and negative points of the interventions. For data analysis, we used two-way ANOVA and post-hoc Bonferroni. The significance level adopted was 5%. For anxiety and mood it was also used analysis of effect size. The analysis of the qualitative questionnaire considered the frequency of positive and negative points reported by the volunteers. Results: Both intervention was ineffective in significantly decreasing the initial values of anxiety; however the manual resistance training showed greater magnitude of decrease in effect size. In the negative factors of mood, the manual resistance training also provided greater magnitudes to decrease in effect size. The manual resistance training had more positive and less negative points mentioned by the sample relative to free weights resistance training. Conclusion: Social interaction level appears to positively influence the acute psychobiological responses of resistance training, and the manual resistance training appears to be a viable alternative for this purpose.

Resumo Objetivo: Comparar respostas psicobiológicas e perceptuais agudas em homens normotensos e hipertensos, após sessões de treinamento resistido com diferentes níveis de interação social: treinamento resistido manual e treinamento resistido com pesos livres. Método: Vinte e seis homens (14 normotensos, 40.29 ± 8.63 anos, índice de massa corporal: 26.53 ± 5.24 kg/m2; 12 hipertensos, 46.00 ± 9.13 anos, índice de massa corporal: 32.51 ± 4.41 kg/m2) foram submetidos a sessões únicas de treinamento resistido manual e treinamento resistido com pesos livres. Foram aferidos ansiedade e humor nos momentos pré e pós-intervenção. Adicionalmente, foi aplicado um questionário para identificar pontos positivos e negativos das intervenções. Para análise dos resultados, utilizou-se ANOVA two-way e post-hoc de Bonferroni. Adotou-se nível de significância de 5%. Para ansiedade e humor, também foi utilizada análise do tamanho do efeito. A análise do questionário qualitativo considerou a frequência de pontos positivos e negativos relatados pelos voluntários. Resultados: Nenhuma intervenção foi eficiente em diminuir significativamente os valores iniciais de ansiedade; no entanto, o treinamento resistido manual apresentou maior magnitude de diminuição no tamanho do efeito. Nos fatores negativos do humor, o treinamento resistido manual também proporcionou maiores magnitudes para diminuição no tamanho do efeito. O treinamento resistido manual teve mais pontos positivos e menos pontos negativos mencionados pela amostra, em relação ao treinamento resistido com pesos livres. Conclusão: O nível de interação social parece influenciar positivamente as respostas psicobiológicas agudas do treinamento resistido, e o treinamento resistido manual parece ser uma alternativa viável para esse objetivo.

Resumen Objetivo: Comparar las respuestas psicobiológicas y percepcionales agudas en hombres normotensos e hipertensos, después de sesiones de entrenamiento de fuerza con diferentes niveles de interacción social: entrenamiento de fuerza manual y con pesos libres. Método: Veintiséis hombres (14 normotensos, 40.29 ± 8.63 años, índice de masa corporal: 26.53 ± 5.24 kg/m2; 12 hipertensos, 46.00 ± 9.13 años, índice de masa corporal: 32.51 ± 4.41 kg/m2) fueron sometidos a sesiones individuales de entrenamiento de fuerza manual y con pesos libres. Se midieron la ansiedad y el estado de ánimo antes y después de la intervención. Además, se aplicó un cuestionario para identificar los puntos positivos y negativos de las intervenciones. Para el análisis de los datos, se utilizó ANOVA de dos vías y el test de Bonferroni. Se adoptó un nivel de significación del 5%. Para ansiedad y el estado de ánimo también se utilizó el análisis del tamaño del efecto. El análisis del cuestionario cualitativo consideró la frecuencia de puntos positivos y negativos reportados por los voluntarios. Resultados: La intervención no fue eficaz en la disminución significativa de los valores iniciales de ansiedad, sin embargo, el entrenamiento de fuerza manual mostró una mayor magnitud de la disminución en el tamaño del efecto. En los factores negativos del estado de ánimo y, el entrenamiento de fuerza manual también proporcionó mayores magnitudes en la disminución del tamaño del efecto. El entrenamiento de fuerza manual tenía más puntos positivos y menos negativos mencionados por la muestra en relación con entrenamiento de fuerza con pesos libres. Conclusión: El nivel de interacción social parece influir positivamente en las respuestas psicobiológicas agudas al entrenamiento de fuerza y el entrenamiento de fuerza manual parece ser una alternativa viable para este propósito.

RESUMO: Foram estudados 26 casos de meningoencefalite por herpesvírus bovino (BoHV) diagnosticados entre 2010-2016, no Estado de Goiás (GO). A doença acometeu principalmente bovinos jovens, entre 60 dias a 18 meses de idade. Não houve associação entre os casos e o sexo dos bovinos e a sazonalidade. A doença foi observada em todas as cinco Mesorregiões do Estado, com uma frequência maior nas Mesorregiões Sul e Centro. Os sinais clínicos mais frequentemente observados incluíram cegueira, incoordenação, sialorreia e ataxia. As principais alterações macroscópicas observadas incluíram congestão com tumefação e achatamento das circunvoluções, amolecimento e amarelamento do córtex telencefálico e focos de hemorragia. Em cinco encéfalos, não foram observadas alterações macroscópicas e em quatro as alterações não foram informadas. As principais alterações histológicas ocorreram no córtex telencefálico, principalmente o córtex frontal e parietal, mas em alguns casos, lesões de menor intensidade foram também observadas no tálamo, núcleos basais, mesencéfalo, ponte, bulbo, cerebelo e hipocampo. Todos os casos apresentaram meningoencefalite linfoplasmocítica e corpúsculos de inclusão intranucleares basofílicos em astrócitos e, eventualmente, em neurônios. Outras lesões frequentes incluíram necrose neuronal laminar segmentar (neurônio vermelho), espongiose, tumefação do núcleo das células endoteliais, gliose focal ou difusa, hipertrofia de astrócitos, infiltração por células gitter, congestão e hemorragia. Lesões menos comuns incluíram astrócitos Alzheimer tipo II, lesão residual e neuronofagia. A necrose neuronal e o edema (espongiose) foram mais acentuados nas camadas granular externa, molecular, de células piramidais e granular interna dos telencéfalos. Tanto os giros quanto os sulcos foram afetados igualmente. Dos 26 casos, o DNA de BoHV-5 foi amplificado em dois (7,69%) casos, enquanto que o de BoHV-1 foi identificado em um caso (3,84%). Nos casos positivos para BoHV-5 foram usadas amostras fixadas em formol a 10% e incluídas em parafina e amostras congeladas foram utilizadas no caso positivo para BoHV-1.

ABSTRACT: Twenty six cases of bovine herpetic meningoencephalitis diagnosed from 2010-2016 in Goiás state, Brazil, were studied. Affected cattle were mainly 60-day to 18-month-old. There was no association of the disease with sex and seasonality. The disease was found in all five mesoregions with a higher prevalence in southern and central state of Goiás. Clinical signs more frequently observed included blindness, incoordination, circling, excessive salivation, and ataxia. Main gross findings in the brain were congestion with swelling and flattening of gyri, softening and yellow discoloration of cerebral cortex and hemorrhagic foci. In five cases no gross changes were observed in the brain and in four cases there is no information. The main histopathological changes were in the cortex of telencephalic lobes, especially the frontal and parietal; however less prominent and less frequently found lesions occurred in the thalamus, basal nuclei, midbrain, pons, medulla oblongata, cerebellum, and hippocampus. All cases presented lymphoplasmocytic meningoencephalitis and intranuclear basophilic inclusion bodies in astrocytes, less commonly in neurons. Other frequent lesions included segmental laminar neuronal necrosis (red neurons), spongiosis, swollen vascular endothelial nuclei, gliosis (focal and diffuse), hypertrophy of astrocytes, infiltration of gitter cells, congestion, and hemorrhage. Lesions less frequently observed were Alzheimer type II astrocytes, residual lesion and neuronophagia. The most frequently affected cortical layers by neuronal necrosis and edema were external and internal granular, molecular, and pyramidal cell layers. Gyri and sulci were equally affected. Of the 26 cases, in 2 (7.69%) the DNA of BoHV-5 was amplified with samples fixed in 10% formalin and paraffin-embedded. DNA of BoHV-1 was identified in another case (3.84%) where, positive to BoHV-1, fresh samples were used.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente experimento avaliar o efeito de dois diferentes diluidores (leite em pó desnatado glicose - SMG ou lactose gema de ovo - LEY) sobre as características físicas e a fertilidade do sêmen asinino coletado de forma fracionada e resfriado a 5ºC. Para isso, quatro jumentos da raça Pêga foram utilizados como doadores de sêmen. A fração espermática rica do ejaculado foi diluída preparando-se doses inseminantes contendo 400 x 106 espermatozoides móveis em um volume de 22 mL, resfriadas a 5ºC e armazenadas por até 48 horas em contêiner proposto por Palhares (1997). A motilidade e o vigor espermáticos foram avaliados no sêmen fresco, após a pré-diluição, antes das inseminações, às 24 e 48 horas de armazenamento. Para avaliação de fertilidade, 44 éguas foram inseminadas com sêmen armazenado por um período entre 12 e 24 horas, em dias fixos (segundas, quartas e sextas-feiras), após a detecção de um folículo de diâmetro maior ou igual a 30mm em um dos ovários, até a ovulação. O diagnóstico de gestação foi realizado a partir de 12 dias após a ovulação, por meio de ultrassonografia transretal. O sêmen diluído em SMG apresentou motilidade espermática superior à do LEY, já a partir do tempo pré-IA. Às 48 horas de armazenamento, todos os jumentos apresentaram valores de motilidade entre 45% e 53%, quando o sêmen foi diluído em SMG, enquanto apenas um jumento apresentou motilidade superior a 30% no tratamento utilizando LEY. A taxa de concepção/ciclo das éguas inseminadas também foi superior para o sêmen diluído em SMG em relação ao diluído em LEY (56,52% versus 4,76%, respectivamente).

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two different extenders (Skimmed Milk Glucose - SMG or Lactose - Egg Yolk - LEY) on physical characteristics and fertility of fractionated donkey semen cooled at 5°C. For this, four Pêga donkeys were used as semen donors. The sperm rich fraction of the ejaculate was diluted preparing insemination doses containing 400 x 106 motile spermatozoa in a volume of 22 mL, cooled to 5°C and stored up to 48 hours in a container proposed by Palhares (1997). Sperm motility and vigor were assessed in fresh semen, after first semen dilution, before insemination, at 24 and 48 hours after storage. For the fertility evaluation, 44 mares were inseminated with semen stored for a period between 12 and 24 hours. The mares were inseminated on fixed days (Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) after the detection of a follicle greater than a 30mm diameter in one of the ovaries through ovulation. Pregnancy diagnosis was performed on day 12 post-ovulation, using transrectal ultrasonography. Semen diluted in SMG showed superior sperm motility than LEY, at the Pre-AI evaluation (P<0.05). At 48 hours of storage, all donkeys had motility values between 45 and 53% for semen diluted in SMG, while only one donkey showed motility greater than 30% in the LEY treatment. The pregnancy rate/cycle for mares inseminated with semen diluted in SMG was superior than that obtained using LEY (56.52% vs 4.76%, respectively).

RESUMO Objetivo: Chamar a atenção para a importância da interação entre cuidador e criança durante a alimentação e a influência do estilo de parentalidade na formação do hábito alimentar. Fontes dos dados: Foi feita busca nas bases de dados PubMed e Scopus de artigos que abordassem a alimentação responsiva e foram sido selecionados aqueles julgados mais relevantes pelos autores. Síntese dos dados: O modo de alimentar as crianças é decisivo na formação do hábito alimentar, sobretudo as estratégias que os pais/cuidadores usam para estimular a alimentação. Nesse contexto, a alimentação responsiva tem merecido destaque, tem como princípios-chave: alimentar a criança pequena diretamente e assistir as mais velhas quando elas já comem sozinhas; alimentar lenta e pacientemente e encorajar a criança a comer, mas não forçá-la; se a criança recusar muitos alimentos, experimentar diferentes combinações de alimentos, de gostos, texturas e métodos de encorajamento; minimizar distrações durante as refeições; e fazer das refeições oportunidades de aprendizado e amor, falar com a criança durante a alimentação e manter contato olho a olho. Cabe ao cuidador a responsabilidade de ser sensível aos sinais da criança e aliviar tensões durante a alimentação, além de torná-la prazerosa; enquanto é papel da criança expressar os sinais de fome e saciedade com clareza e ser receptiva ao cuidador. Conclusão: A alimentação responsiva é muito importante na formação dos hábitos alimentares e deve ser incentivada pelos profissionais de saúde, que orientarão as famílias sobre como praticá-la.

ABSTRACT Objective: To draw attention to the importance of interaction between caregiver and child during feeding and the influence of parenting style on dietary habit formation. Source of data: A search was performed in the PubMed and Scopus databases for articles addressing responsive feeding; the articles considered most relevant by the authors were selected. Synthesis of data: The way children are fed is decisive for the formation of their eating habits, especially the strategies that parents/caregivers use to stimulate feeding. In this context, responsive feeding has been emphasized, with the key principles: feed the infant directly and assist older children when they already eat on their own; feed them slowly and patiently, and encourage children to eat but do not force them; if the child refuses many types of foods, experiment with different food combinations, tastes, textures, and methods of encouragement; minimize distractions during meals; and make the meals an opportunity for learning and love, talking to the child during feeding and maintaining eye contact. It is the caregiver's responsibility to be sensitive to the child's signs and alleviate tensions during feeding, and make feeding time pleasurable; whereas it is the child's role to clearly express signs of hunger and satiety and be receptive to the caregiver. Conclusion: Responsive feeding is very important in dietary habit formation and should be encouraged by health professionals in their advice to families.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a tendência dos indicadores de aleitamento materno (AM) em Feira de Santana, Brasil, e identificar características da população que possam ter influenciado essa tendência. MÉTODOS: Procedeu-se à análise de três inquéritos transversais, metodologicamente comparáveis, feitos em 1996, 2001 e 2009, que envolveram 2.159, 2.319 e 1.471 menores de um ano vacinados na campanha nacional de multivacinação desses anos. Usou-se questionário que continha questões sobre o consumo de leite materno e outros alimentos no dia anterior ao inquérito, além de perguntas sobre características da população. RESULTADOS: O acréscimo anual nos indicadores de AM foi de 2,1 pontos percentuais para o AM na primeira hora de vida (de 52,2% para 68,9%); 1,1 ponto para o AM em crianças de nove a 12 meses (de 45% para 59,6%); e de 0,8 ponto para o AM exclusivo (AME) em menores de seis meses (de 36,9% para 47,4%). A duração mediana do AME aumentou de 52 para 84 dias e a de AM de 278 para 376 dias. Observaram-se mudanças nas características da população, as quais podem ter influenciado a evolução dos indicadores do AM de forma positiva (melhor escolaridade das mães, decréscimo no uso de chupeta e menor prevalência de mães adolescentes) ou negativa (maior proporção de mães primíparas e de cesarianas e menor frequência de nascimentos em Hospital Amigo da Criança). CONCLUSÃO: Houve avanços significativos nos indicadores de AM em Feira de Santana, embora ainda estejam longe do ideal. Mudanças observadas nas características da população podem ter influenciado positiva ou negativamente essa evolução.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate trends in breastfeeding indicators in the city of Feira de Santana, Brazil, and to identify population characteristics that might have influenced this trend. METHODS: Three methodologically comparable cross-sectional surveys performed in 1996, 2001, and 2009 were analyzed. These involved 2,159, 2,319, and 1,471 children younger than 1 year of age who were vaccinated in national multivaccination campaigns in the respective years. A standardized questionnaire was used, containing closed questions on consumption of breast milk and other foods on the day before the survey, along with questions regarding the characteristics of the population. RESULTS: The annual growth of the breastfeeding indicators was 2.1% for breastfeeding in the first hour of life (from 52.2% to 68.9%); 1.1% for breastfeeding among children aged 9 to 12 months (from 45% to 59.6%); and 0.8% for exclusive breastfeeding among infants younger than 6 months (from 36.9% to 47.4%). The median duration of exclusive breastfeeding increased from 52.3 to 84.3 days, and overall breastfeeding from 278 to 376 days. Some changes in the characteristics of the population were observed, which may have positively influenced the evolution of the breastfeeding indicators (better schooling level among the mothers, less use of dummies/pacifiers, and lower proportions of adolescent mothers), or negatively (greater proportions of primiparous mothers and cesarean deliveries, and lower frequency of births in Baby-Friendly Hospitals). CONCLUSION: There were significant advances in breastfeeding indicators, although they are still far from ideal. Changes observed in population characteristics may have positively or negatively influenced this evolution.

The compounds 6-dimethylaminopurine and cycloheximide promote the successful production of cloned mammals and have been used in the development of embryos produced by somatic cell nuclear transfer. This study investigated the effects of 6-dimethylaminopurine and cycloheximide in vitro, using the thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide colorimetric assay to assess cytotoxicity, the trypan blue exclusion assay to assess cell viability, the comet assay to assess genotoxicity, and the micronucleus test with cytokinesis block to test mutagenicity. In addition, the comet assay and the micronucleus test were also performed on peripheral blood cells of 54 male Swiss mice, 35 g each, to assess the effects of the compounds in vivo. The results indicated that both 6-dimethylaminopurine and cycloheximide, at the concentrations and doses tested, were cytotoxic in vitro and genotoxic and mutagenic in vitro and in vivo, altered the nuclear division index in vitro, but did not diminish cell viability in vitro. Considering that alterations in DNA play important roles in mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and morphofunctional teratogenesis and reduce embryonic viability, this study indicated that 6-dimethylaminopurine and cycloheximide utilized in the process of mammalian cloning may be responsible for the low embryo viability commonly seen in nuclear transfer after implantation in utero.

O estudo investigou o efeito do silício (Si) e de doses de manganês (Mn) na atividade das enzimas peroxidases (POX), polifenoloxidases (PFO) e fenilalanina amônia-liases (FAL) em plantas não inoculadas e inoculadas com Bipolaris oryzae. Plantas de arroz (cultivar Metica 1) foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva com 0 (-Si) e 2 mmol Si L-1 (+Si) e com as doses de 0,5; 2,5 e 10 µmol Mn L-1. As plantas foram inoculadas com B. oryzae e amostras de folhas foram coletadas às 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 e 48 h após inoculação (hai). Amostras de folhas de plantas não-inoculadas, nestes mesmos tempos, também foram coletadas. Para as doses de 0,5 e 2,5 µmol Mn L-1, a atividade da POX aumentou para as plantas -Si com um pico às 48 hai na dose de 10 mmol Mn L-1. Para as plantas +Si, a atividade da POX também aumentou, mas foi baixa para as doses de 2,5 e 10 mmol Mn L-1. A atividade da POX não foi afetada pelas doses de Mn na presença de Si. No entanto, na ausência de Si a atividade da POX aumentou. Para a dose de 0,5 mmol Mn L-1, a atividade da PFO nas plantas -Si aumentou, mas não foi afetada pelas outras duas doses de Mn, exceto um pico às 18 hai na dose de 10 mmol Mn L-1. Na presença de Si, a atividade PFO aumentou nas plantas que receberam 2,5 mmol Mn L-1 em contraste com as outras duas doses de Mn para as quais a atividade da PFO decresceu. Ao comparar os tratamentos -Si e +Si na dose de 2,5 mmol Mn L-1, atividade da PFO aumentou das 18 às 36 hai para as plantas supridas com Si. A atividade da FAL nas plantas -Si decresceu independentemente das doses de Mn. Nas plantas +Si e inoculadas com B. oryzae, houve menor atividade da FAL tanto na maior quanto na menor dose de Mn e também nas plantas não-inoculadas. A atividade da FAL não aumentou na presença de Si, mas na ausência desse elemento, houve aumento em atividade. Os resultados deste estudo mostram que as atividades da POX, PFO e FAL não aumentaram devido ao suprimento de Si independente da dose de Mn.

This study investigated the role of silicon (Si) and manganese (Mn) rates on the activity of peroxidases (POX), polyphenoloxidases (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyases (PAL) on rice plants non-inoculated and inoculated with Bipolaris orzyae. Rice plants (cultivar Metica 1) were grown in nutrient solution with 0 (-Si) or 2 mmol Si L-1 (+Si) and with 0.5, 2.5 and 10 μmol Mn L-1. Plants were inoculated with B. oryzae and leaf samples were collected at 6, 12, 18, 24, 36 and 48 h after inoculation (hai). Leaf samples were also collected from non-inoculated plants at these same time-points. POX activity increased for -Si plants inoculated with B. oryzae at both rates of 0.5 and 2.5 µmol Mn L-1 with one peak at 48 hai at 10 µmol Mn L-1. For plants supplied with Si, POX activity also increased, but seemed to be low at the rates of 2.5 and 10 µmol Mn L-1. POX activity did not show to be greatly influenced by the Mn rates in the presence of Si. However, in the absence of Si, POX activity increased. PPO activity on -Si plants increased at the rate of 0.5 µmol Mn L-1 and was not affected by the other two Mn rates, except a peak at 18 hai at the rate of 10 µmol Mn L-1. In the presence of Si, PPO activity increased on plants supplied with 2.5 µmol Mn L-1 in contrast to the other two Mn rates for which the PPO activity decreased. By comparing the -Si and +Si treatments at the rate of 2.5 µmol Mn L-1, PPO activity increased from 18 to 36 hai in the presence of Si than on its absence. PAL activity on -Si plants decreased regardless of the Mn rates. On plants supplied with Si and inoculated with B. oryzae, PAL showed low activity at the highest Mn rate and also at the rate of 0.5 µmol Mn L-1, besides its activity been very low compared to the non-inoculated plants. PAL did not increase in activity in the presence of Si, but on its absence, high levels of activity were achieved. Results from this study showed that the activities of POX, PPO and PAL were not boosted by Si at any Mn rate.

O ácaro-hindustânico-dos-citros, Schizotetranychus hindustanicus (Hirst), é uma praga de importância quarentenária, recentemente introduzida no Brasil. Até a condução do presente estudo, não havia informações na literatura sobre a eficiência de acaricidas no controle de S. hindustanicus, em condições de campo. O estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de alguns acaricidas, utilizados em pomares de citros no país, sobre o ácaro-praga e ácaros predadores (Phytoseiidae) presentes na cultura. O experimento foi conduzido em um pomar de citros (limão-tahiti), em Boa Vista, RR. Os acaricidas testados e respectivas concentrações (g i.a./100 L de água) foram: mancozebe (200), abamectina (0,36), espirodiclofeno (6), enxofre (400) e dimetoato (80). A aplicação foi realizada com equipamento acoplado a um trator, provido de pistolas, aplicando-se 10 litros de calda por planta. O delineamento estatístico foi inteiramente casualizado com seis tratamentos e cinco repetições. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 1, 4, 7, 14, 28, 42 e 56 dias após a aplicação (DAA). Em cada avaliação, foram coletados 20 folhas e 10 frutos por parcela, contando-se o número de ácaros S. hindustanicus e fitoseídeos. Todos os produtos reduziram significativamente a população do ácaro-hindustânico nas folhas até 28 DAA. Os acaricidas dimetoato e espirodiclofeno foram altamente eficientes no controle de S. hindustanicus, sendo que o espirodiclofeno apresentou um período de controle mais longo que dimetoato. Com relação aos ácaros predadores, dimetoato, enxofre e abamectina causaram mortalidades significativas (72 a 100%) aos fitoseídeos, até 4 DAA. A espécie predominante de fitoseídeo foi Euseius concordis (Chant), correspondendo a 71% dos ácaros observados.

Schizotetranychus hindustanicus (Hirst) is a pest of quarantine importance, recently introduced in Brazil. There was no information in the literature, on the efficacy of acaricides for the control of S. hindustanicus (Hirst) under field conditions, up to the conduction of this research. The objective of this study was to evaluate some acaricides currently used in citrus orchards, determining their effect on pest mites and predaceous mites (Phytoseiidae) living among the crop. The experiment was carried out in a citrus orchard (Tahitian lime), in the Boa Vista municipality, in the state of Roraima, Brazil. The acaricides studied and their respective concentrations (g a.i./100 l of water) were: mancozeb (200), abamectin (0.36), spirodiclofen (6), sulphur (400) and dimethoate (80). The application was made using tractor-mounted hydraulic handgun sprayers, using a volume of 10 L of acaricide suspension per plant. The statistical design was a completely randomized design with six treatments and five replicates. The evaluations of the effect of chemicals on the populations of S. hindustanicus and predaceous mites (Phytoseiidae) were carried out at 1, 4, 7, 14, 28, 42 and 56 days after treatment (DAT). During each evaluation, 20 leaves and 10 fruits were collected per plot, counting the number of S. hindustanicus and phytoseiid mites. All the chemicals reduced significantly the population of hindustan citrus mite on the leaves until 28 DAT. The acaricides dimethoate and spirodiclofen were highly effective against S. hindustanicus, and spirodiclofen presented a longer effective period than dimethoate. Regarding the predaceous mites, dimethoate, sulfur and abamectin caused significant mortality (72 to 100%) to the predators up to 4 DAT. The predominant species of Phytoseiid mite was Euseius concordis (Chant), corresponding to 71% of mites of this family.

Relata-se a ocorrência de Proleptus acutus Dujardin, 1845 (Nematoda, Physalopteridae) parasitando Zapteryx brevirostris Müller & Henle, 1841 (Rhinobatiformes, Rhinobatidae) em Ubatuba, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Vinte raias foram analisadas e P. acutus foi encontrado no estômago e intestinos de 14 (70%) animais. Este é o primeiro relato da ocorrência dessa espécie de nematóide em Z. brevirostris no Brasil.

Vinte e três espécimes de Leiuris leptocephalus (Rud., 1819) Leuckard 1850 (Spirocercidae) foram recuperados do intestino delgado de uma fêmea de preguiça comum, Bradypus variegatus Shinz 1825 (Bradipodidae), em Ubatuba, estado de São Paulo. Os dados demonstram maior variabilidade morfométrica em relação aos dados da literatura, o que contribui para a caracterização morfológica desse nematódeo. Essa comunicação corresponde ao primeiro relato de B. variegatus como hospedeiro de L. leptocephalus.

Relata-se a ocorrência de Amphiorchis caborojoensis Fischthal & Acholonu 1976 e Carettacola stunkardi Martin e Bamberger 1952, em um exemplar juvenil de tartaruga marinha de pente Eretmochelys imbricata Linnaeus 1758 no Brasil. Foram coletados cinco trematódeos da espécie A. caborojoensis, dois no intestino delgado e três no fígado e dois exemplares adultos de C. stunkardi no lavado corporal. Destes apenas a espécie A. caborojoensis já tinha sido relatada como parasita dessa espécie de quelônio marinho. Esta é a primeira descrição de parasitas em E. imbricata em águas brasileiras e na área do Atlântico Sul Ocidental, e o segundo relato de membros da família Spirorchiidae na mesma região.

The occurrence of Amphiorchis caborojoensis Fischthal & Acholonu 1976 and Carettacola stunkardi Martin & Bamberger 1952 in a young specimen of Hawksbill sea turtle Eretmochelys imbricata Linnaeus 1758 in Brazil was reported. Five A. caborojoensis trematodes were found in the small intestine (n=2) and liver (n=3), and two adult C. stunkardi specimens were collected from body wash. This is the first report of parasites of E. imbricata in Brazilian waters and Southwestern Atlantic Ocean and the second report of members of the Spirorchiidae family in that region. In addition, E. imbricata is a new host recorded for C. stunkardi.

Este trabalho relata as alterações pulmonares, microbiológicas e hematológicas em Crotalus durissus terrificus parasitadas pelo nematódeo do gênero Rhabdias. As análises histológicas, microbiológicas e hematológicas foram realizadas em serpentes parasitadas (n=6) e não parasitadas (n=6). Foram observados infiltrados de células granulocíticas e mononucleares no parênquima pulmonar durante a análise histopatológica das serpentes parasitadas. A análise microbiológica revelou as seguintes bactérias Gram-negativas; Citrobacter divergens, Burkholderia cepacia, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter ammnigenus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pantoea sp. e Providencia rettgeri. Nas serpentes não parasitadas foram identificadas: B. cepacia, Pseudomonas fluorescens e Acinetobacter baumanii. Nos animais parasitados observaram-se: aumento da concentração de proteína plasmática, diminuição da contagem de linfócitos, e valores normais de hematimetria.

This study reported the pulmonary, microbiological, and hematological alterations in Crotalus durissus terrificus parasitized by nematodes of the genus Rhabdias. Histological, microbiological, and hematological analysis were performed on parasitized (n=6) and non-parasitized (n=6) snakes. Granulocytic and mononuclear cell infiltrates in the pulmonary parenchyma and epithelium were also observed during the histological analysis of parasitized snakes. Microbiological analysis of parasitized animals revealed the following Gram-negative bacteria: Citrobacter divergens, Burkholderia cepacia, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter ammnigenus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pantoea sp. and Providencia rettgeri. In non-parasitized snakes, the following species were identified: B. cepacia, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Acinetobacter baumanii. Increased levels of plasmatic protein, decreased lymphocyte counts, and normal red blood cell values were observed in parasitized animals.
