Abstract Candidemia is the predominant form of invasive candidiasis and the most frequently occurring serious fungal infection in critically ill patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU). Studies carried out in Latin America reveal a higher incidence of candidemia and higher mortality rates when compared to North America or Europe. This highlights the need to develop guidelines for correctly diagnosing and treating candidemia in critically ill patients in the ICU. These guidelines are part of the efforts to implement antifungal optimization programs in the region to obtain better clinical outcomes and promote rational antifungal use. This evidence-based clinical standard, established through expert consensus for the Latin American context, contains recommendations and algorithms for diagnosing and treating candidemia in critically ill ICU patients.

This study investigated the reuse of papaya seeds for the extraction of benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) as a context to foster the construction and deepening of chemical concepts in the initial training of chemistry teachers at the Federal University of Espírito Santo (UFES). Using Problematized Experimental Activity (PEA) as a teaching strategy, students conducted experiments to extract BITC from papaya seeds and applied ultra-violet (UV)-visible spectroscopy for its quantification. The results revealed that the highest BITC concentration was obtained from ethanolic extracts of dried seeds. At the end of the course, students developed teaching projects to incorporate this environmental theme into high school classes, reinforcing the relevance of contextualized chemistry teaching. The didactic intervention carried out in an environmental context contributed significantly to the training of future teachers, fostering meaningful learning and promoting a critical and conscious stance on the role of Chemistry in environmental issues.

ABSTRACT Banana is a climacteric fruit with short post-harvest shelf-life, undergoing significant changes during ripening. Refrigerated storage is considered the most efficient method to preserve the quality of fruit by slowing down their metabolism. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate physical and chemical characteristics of 'BRS-Princesa' bananas stored under refrigeration, focusing on determining their post-harvest shelf-life. The fruit were stored in a cold chamber at temperature of 14±1 °C and relative air humidity of 75±1% for 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days. They were removed from the cold chamber after each period and kept at 25±1 °C in a climate-controlled environment (CCE) until they presented a fully yellow peel (ripening stage 6). The fruit were evaluated immediately after removal from the cold chamber and when they reached the ripening stage 6. Refrigeration affected all physical and chemical characteristics of the fruit evaluated after removal from the cold chamber. However, when the fruit were fully ripe, pulp yield, soluble solids content, and total soluble sugars presented no significant difference, indicating a similar ripening to the control group. Fruit stored for 21 and 28 days showed chilling injury. 'BRS-Princesa' bananas can be stored at 14 °C for up to 14 days, without losses in fruit appearance and quality, thus extending the time for fruit consumption by 8 days when compared to fruit stored in the CCE (25±1 °C).
RESUMO A banana é um fruto climatérico de vida pós-colheita curta e que sofre mudanças acentuadas durante seu amadurecimento. O armazenamento refrigerado é considerado a forma mais eficaz de preservar a qualidade dos frutos, diminuindo seu metabolismo. Assim, o trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar as características físicoquímicas de bananas 'BRS-Princesa' armazenadas sob refrigeração, visando determinar o período de vida útil pós-colheita. Os frutos foram armazenados em câmara fria, em temperatura de 14±1 ºC e 75±1% UR por períodos de 0, 7,14, 21 ou 28 dias. Após cada período, os frutos foram retirados da câmara fria e mantidos em temperatura ambiente (25±1 ºC) até apresentarem coloração da casca completamente amarela (estádio 6 de maturação). As avaliações foram realizadas logo após a retirada dos frutos da refrigeração e quando os frutos atingiram o estádio 6. A refrigeração afetou todas as variáveis de qualidade físico-química dos frutos avaliados após a retirada da câmara fria. Porém, quando os frutos atingiram o completo amadurecimento, as variáveis rendimento da polpa, sólidos solúveis e açúcares solúveis totais não apresentaram diferença significativa, indicando um amadurecimento semelhante ao controle. Frutos armazenados por 21 e 28 dias apresentaram índices de injúrias por frio. As bananas 'BRS-Princesa' podem ser armazenadas a 14 °C por um período de até 14 dias, sem prejuízo à boa aparência e qualidade dos frutos, com incremento de 8 dias na possibilidade de consumo dos frutos, quando comparados ao controle.

Abstract Plants synthesize secondary metabolites as a means of survival and competition. These metabolites are a potential source of natural antioxidants that may promote activity, favoring the control of cellular damage caused by oxidative stress. The Annonaceae family occurs in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The medicinal benefits of plants from this family are caused by secondary metabolites present in these species. Thus, this study aimed to determine the total phenolic content, evaluate the antioxidant potential, and in vitro cytotoxicity of the leaf ethanolic extract from Ephedrantus amazonicus R. E. Fries. The phenolic content and antioxidant activity were evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu and DPPH methods, respectively. The assays were adapted for 96-well microplates, with absorbance reading at λ = 630 and 517 nm, respectively, using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The in vitro cytotoxicity assay was performed using fibroblasts (L929 cell line). The MS/MS analyses were performed through direct infusion using a LCQ Fleet mass spectrometer equipped with APCI font and ion trap analyzer, in the positive and negative mode. A molecular network was created using the online workflow on the GNPS website (http://gnps.ucsd.edu). The phenolic content at 400μg was 25.24 ± 0.98μg.GAE/g, while the antioxidant activity showed an EC50 of 13.37±2.63 μg.mL-1. Dereplication led to the annotation of three flavonoids that may contribute to the observed antioxidant activity. The extract showed low cytotoxicity at the highest tested concentration (> 500μM). The results demonstrate that the extract from Ephedrantus amazonicus R.E. Fries leaves is a promising source of natural antioxidants.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract A checklist of recent and fossil fishes of the Order Characiformes is presented herein and believed to be complete through 2022. A total of 47 collaborators checked and provided information about their taxa of expertise. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by family and then genus and includes all available synonyms. From a total of 3,087 species group names and 527 genus group names, 2,334 species are currently treated as valid, and assigned to 301 genera and 24 families. This total includes 25 species known only from the fossil record, of which 21 are assigned to eight extant families and four are Incertae sedis in Characiformes, but does not include five species based on fossil which were wrongly treated in Characiformes. The status of 79 nominal species remains unresolved. When there are two competing hypotheses about the validity of a name, one of them is chosen and the alternate interpretation is provided in the remark section of that name. Distributional summaries are presented as numbers that correspond to areas for which there is a record of occurrence of the species. A list of unavailable names is provided at the end since some of those names may need additional research to certify their status.
Resumo Uma lista de peixes recentes e fósseis da Ordem Characiformes é apresentada e acredita-se que a lista esteja completa até 2022. Ao todo, 47 colaboradores verificaram e forneceram informações sobre táxons de sua especialidade. A lista está organizada em ordem alfabética por família e em seguida gênero e inclui todos os sinônimos disponíveis. De um total de 3.087 nomes de grupos de espécies e 527 nomes de grupos de gêneros, 2.334 espécies são atualmente tratadas como válidas e atribuídas a 301 gêneros e 24 famílias. Este total inclui 25 espécies fósseis, das quais 21 são incluídas em oito famílias recentes e quatro são Incertae sedis em Characiformes, mas não inclui cinco espécies baseadas em fósseis que foram incorretamente consideradas como Characiformes. O status de 79 espécies nominais permanece não resolvido. Quando há duas hipóteses concorrentes sobre a validade de um nome, uma delas é escolhida e a interpretação alternativa é fornecida na seção de comentários do nome em questão. Dados sobre distribuição geográfica são apresentados através de números que correspondem a regiões para as quais há registro de ocorrência da espécie. Uma lista de nomes indisponíveis foi listada no final do texto, pois alguns desses nomes precisam ser mais bem investigados para certificar seu status.

Antibiotics can contaminate the environment as a result of improper disposal. The induction of doxycycline in the environment could give rise to lineages of the cucurbit beetle Diabrotica speciosa containing resistant endosymbiotic microorganisms, giving rise to bacterial strains capable of biodegrading these antibiotic residues. This work determined the relationship between the intestinal microbiota of D. speciosa and its ability to biodegrade an antibiotic. Bacterial strains of Enterobacter cloacae and Stenotrophomonas maltophila isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of D. speciosa were evaluated for the biodegradation of doxycycline. An analytical method for the extraction and quantification of doxycycline by high-efficiency liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) was developed and applied to monitor the biodegradation rates during bacterial growth for nutrient and nutrient-deficient media, both supplemented with the antibiotic. Degradation kinetics showed a decrease in antibiotic concentration after 96 h in saline medium, with recoveries of 63.1 and 87.7% for E. cloacae and S. maltophilia, respectively. Two degradation products were then identified and characterized from the liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry data after bioassays with E. cloacae. The gastrointestinal tract of insects such as D. speciosa can be a source of useful microbes for biotechnological processes such as the biodegradation of exogenous organic compounds in the environment.

Resumo (Objetivo) O objetivo foi analisar a resistência antimicrobiana na aquicultura peruana. (Metodologia) Foi realizado um estudo observacional, descritivo. Foram incluídas amostras das espécies Argopecten purpuratus, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Oreochromis niloticus e Litopenaeus vannamei. Foram isoladas bactérias dos gêneros Enterococcus spp., Salmonella spp., Aeromonas spp., e espécies de Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus e Flavobacterium psychrophilum. A resistência antimicrobiana foi avaliada por meio de antibiograma, e amostras resistentes foram sequenciadas para identificar genes de resistência antimicrobiana. Foram calculadas as frequências absoluta e percentual, além dos intervalos de confiança de Wald, Clopper-Pearson e as prevalências agrupadas. (Resultados) Em relação a A. purpuratus, 22,2% (IC 95%: 2,81-60,00) das amostras de E. coli foram resistentes à oxitetraciclina. Estes pertenciam a 4,44 % (n=2) dos centros de produção aquícola (CPA). Em O. mykiss, 88,89% (IC 95%: 51,16-99,72) das amostras de rococcus spp. foram resistentes à fosfomicina e oxitetraciclina. Estas pertenciam a 12,96% das CPAs (n=7). Em relação a O. niloticus, 47,31 % IC 95%: 37,16-57,46) das amostras de E. coli foram resistentes à oxitetraciclina>ampicilina>cloranfenicol fosfomicina e azitromicina. Estas pertenciam a 50% das CPAs (n=19). Além disso, 89,36% (IC95%: 80,55-98,18) das amostras de Enterococcus spp. foram resistentes a fosfomicina>cloranfenicol e colistina>oxitetraciclina>azitromicina>ampicilina; estas pertenciam a 36,84% das CPAs (n=14). Em L. vannamei, 87,11% (IC 95%: 83,00-91,21) das amostras de Enterococcus spp foram resistentes à fosfomicina>colistina>oxitetraciclina>azitromicina eritromicina>enrofloxacina> ampicilina>cloranfenicol e pertenciam a 100% das CPAs (n=33). Além disso, 3 ,05% (IC 95%: 29,74-40,23) das amostras de V.parahaemolyticus foram resistentes à ampicilina>fosfomicina>colistina>oxitetraciclina>azitromicina. Estas pertenciam a 78,79% (n=26) das CPAs. (Conclusões) A porcentagem de CPA de O. niloticus L. vannamei, mostrou maior resistência antimicrobiana do estudo.
Abstract (Objective) The objective of this study was to analyze antimicrobial resistance in Peruvian aquaculture. (Methodology) An observational, descriptive study was carried out. Samples of Argopectenpurpuratus, Oncorhynchus mykiss, Oreochromis niloticus and Litopenaeus vannamei were included. The bacteria Enterococcus spp., Salmonella spp., Erichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Aeromonas spp., and Flavobacterium psychrophilum were isolated. Antibiotic resistance was evaluated using antibiograms, and resistant samples were sequenced to identify antimicrobial resistance genes. Absolute and percentage frequencies were calculated. In addition, Wald, Clopper-Pearson, and pooled prevalence confidence intervals were estimated. (Results) In the case of A. purpuratus, 22.2% (95% CI:2.81-60.00) of the E. coli samples were resistant to oxytetracycline. Resistant samples were found in 4.44% (n=2) of the aquaculture production centers (APCs). In O. mykiss, 88.89% (95% CI:51.16-99.72) of the Enterococcus spp. were resistant to osfomycin and oxytetracycline. Resistant samples were found in12.96% of the APCs (n=7). Regarding O. niloticus, 47.31% (95% CI: 37.16-57.46) of the E. coli samples were resistant to oxytetracycline ampicilline>chloramphenicol>fosfomycin and azithromycin. Resistant samples were encountered in 50% of the APCs (n=19). In addition, 89.36% (95% CI:80.55-98.18) of the Enterococcus spp. were resistant to Fosfomycin> chloranphenicol and colistin> oxytetracycline>azithromycin>ampicilline; resistant samples were found in 36.84% of the APCs (n=14). In L. vannamei, 87.11% (95% CI:83.00-91.21) of the Enterococcus spp. samples were resistant to Fosfomycin> colistin> oxytetracycline> azithromycin> ampicilline and resistant samples were found in 100% of the APCs (n=33). Likewise, 35.05% (95% CI:29.74-40.23) of the V. parahaemolyticus samples were resistant to ampicilline>fosfomycin>oxytetracycline>azithromycin>eritromicine>enrofloxacin>ampicilline> chloranfhenicol. Resistant samples were found in 78.79% (n=26) of the APCs (Conclusions) The percentage of APCs with O. niloticus and L. vannamei showed that antimicrobial resistance was high.

Abstract Nowadays, the measurement of respiratory dynamics is underrated at clinical setting and in the daily life of a subject, still representing a challenge from a technical and medical point of view. In this article we propose a concept to measure some of its parameters, such as the respiratory rate (RR), using four inertial sensors. Two different experiments were performed to validate the concept. We analyzed the most suitable placement of each sensor to assess those features and studied the reliability of the system to measure abnormal parameters of respiration (tachypnea, bradypnea and breath holding). Finally, we measured post-COVID-19 patients, some of them with breath alterations after more than a year of the diagnosis. Experimental results showed that the proposed system could be potentially used to measure the respiratory dynamics at clinical setting. Moreover, while RR can be easily calculated by any sensor, other parameters need to be measured with a sensor in a particular position.
Resumen Hoy en día la medición de la dinámica respiratoria está infravalorada en el ámbito clínico y en la vida diaria de un sujeto, y sigue representando un reto desde el punto de vista técnico y médico. En este artículo proponemos un concepto para medir algunos de sus parámetros, como la frecuencia respiratoria (FR), utilizando cuatro sensores inerciales. Se realizaron dos experimentos diferentes para validar el concepto. Analizamos la colocación más adecuada de cada sensor para evaluar esas características y estudiamos la fiabilidad del sistema para medir parámetros anormales de la respiración (taquipnea, bradipnea y retención de la respiración). Por último, realizamos mediciones en pacientes posCOVID-19, algunos de ellos con alteraciones respiratorias después de más de un año del diagnóstico. Los resultados experimentales mostraron que el sistema propuesto podría utilizarse potencialmente para medir la dinámica respiratoria en el ámbito clínico. Además, mientras que la FR puede calcularse fácilmente con cualquier sensor, otros parámetros deben medirse con un sensor en una posición determinada.

Resumen Antecedentes: El cáncer de células pequeñas (CPCP) representa el 13-15% del total de neoplasias primarias de pulmón. Se caracteriza por su rapidez en la tasa de crecimiento y en el desarrollo de metástasis a distancia. Objetivos: Orientar y estandarizar el tratamiento del CPCP enfermedad extensa en México basado en evidencia clínica nacional e internacional. Material y métodos: Este documento se desarrolló como una colaboración del Instituto Nacional de Cancerología y la Sociedad Mexicana de Oncología en cumplimiento con estándares internacionales. Se integró un grupo conformado por oncólogos médicos, cirujanos oncólogos, cirujanos de tórax, radio-oncólogos y metodólogos con experiencia en revisiones sistemáticas de la literatura y guías de práctica clínica. Resultados: Se consensaron, por el método Delphi y en reuniones a distancia, las recomendaciones en CPCP enfermedad extensa, producto de preguntas de trabajo. Se identificó y evaluó la evidencia científica que responde a cada una de dichas preguntas clínicas antes de incorporarla al cuerpo de la guía. Conclusión: Esta guía proporciona recomendaciones clínicas para el manejo de la enfermedad extensa del CPCP y durante el proceso de toma de decisiones de los clínicos involucrados con su manejo en nuestro país para mejorar la calidad de la atención clínica para estos pacientes.
Abstract Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) represents 13-15% of all primary lung neoplasms and is characterized by its rapid growth rate and the rapid development of distant metastases. Objectives: To guide and standardize the treatment of extensive disease small cell lung cancer in Mexico based on national and international clinical evidence. Material and methods: This document was developed as a collaboration between the National Cancer Institute and the Mexican Society of Oncology in compliance with international standards. An interdisciplinary group was formed, including medical oncologists, oncological surgeons, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and methodologists with experience in systematic reviews of the literature and clinical practice guidelines. Results: A consensus was reached, both by the Delphi method and in remote meetings, of extensive disease recommendations resulting from work questions. The scientific evidence that answers each of these clinical questions was identified and critically evaluated, before being incorporated into the body of evidence of the Guide. Conclusions: This Clinical Practice Guide provides clinical recommendations for the management of extensive disease of SCLC to contribute to the decision-making process of the clinicians involved with its management in our country, hoping that this will contribute to improving the quality of clinical care in these patients.

An interdisciplinary group was formed, including medical oncologists, oncological surgeons, thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists, and methodologists with experience in systematic reviews of the literature and clinical practice guidelines. Results: Consensus recommendations were reached, both by the Delphi method and in remote meetings, for limited SCLC disease resulting from the same number of work questions. The scientific evidence that answers each of these clinical questions was identified and critically evaluated, before being incorporated into the body of evidence of the guide. Conclusion: This guide provides clinical recommendations for the management of limited disease SCLC to contribute to the decision-making process of the clinicians involved with its management in our country, hoping that this will contribute to improving the quality of clinical care in these patients.

RESUMEN Introducción : El complejo C0-C1-C2 es responsable de la transición de la carga axial, con función biomecánica única, siendo afectada por múltiples patologías, que por lo general la literatura no las considera como un solo ítem, sino que lo desarrolla según su etiología, pero en nuestro estudio se ha considerado en 5 grupos: traumática, congénita, inflamatoria reumática, neoplásica y degenerativa. Objetivo : Determinar las características epidemiológicas, clínicas y del tratamiento en la patología cervical alta. Materiales y métodos : Se incluyeron a todos los pacientes con diagnóstico clínico radiológico de alguna patología cervical alta que hayan sido sometidos a tratamiento quirúrgico entre 2016 y 2021 en el Hospital Almenara. Se usó el test “t” de student y de chi cuadrado. Se dividió a los pacientes en alguno de los 5 grupos antes mencionados. Resultados : Se consideraron 31 pacientes, con una edad media de 51.16 años. La patología cervical alta más frecuente fue la traumática con el 35.48%. El déficit motor se presentó en el 51.61% y el déficit sensitivo se presentó en el 54.84%. La cirugía más frecuente fue la fijación cervical alta con el 43.89%. La tasa de complicaciones fue del 16.13% con una mortalidad del 0%. Conclusiones : La patología cervical alta es rara, siendo la del tipo traumática la más frecuente, pero un manejo oportuno y adecuado permite un mejor pronóstico funcional del paciente.
ABSTRACT Introduction : The C0-C1-C2 complex is responsible of axial load transition, and its biomechanical function is unique, it is affected by multiple pathological conditions; and generally speaking, the literature does not consider these conditions as a single item, it describes them according to etiology. For our study we considered five groups: trauma-related, congenital, rheumatic-inflammatory, neoplastic, and degenerative. Objective : To determine epidemiological, clinical, and therapy-related characteristics in upper cervical pathological conditions. Materials and methods : All patients with a clinical-radiological diagnosis of any upper cervical pathological condition that had undergone surgery between 2016 and 2021 in Guillermo Almenara Hospital were included. Student’s t test and chi square methods were used. patients were divided into one of the five aforementioned groups. Results : Thirty-one patients were included in the study; their mean age was 51.16 years. The most frequent upper cervical pathological condition was trauma-related, with 35.48%. Motor deficit occurred in 51.61% of all patients, and sensitive deficit occurred in 54.84%. The most frequently surgical procedure performed was upper cervical fixation, in 43.89% of all patients. Complication rate was 16.13%, and mortality was 0%. Conclusions : Upper cervical pathological conditions are rare, trauma-related conditions are most frequent, but timely and adequate management allow us to achieve better functional prognosis for these patients.

Resumo Com o objetivo de avaliar a qualidade microbiológica de águas e ostras de bancos naturais e ostreiculturas localizados na ilha de São Luís (MA), foram analisadas no período de setembro de 2020 a fevereiro de 2021 60 amostras, sendo 30 de água e 30 de ostras (Crassostrea sp.), coletadas diretamente com os marisqueiros e proprietários de cultivos nos municípios da ilha de São Luís. Para a determinação de coliformes totais e Escherichia coli nas amostras de água, foi utilizado o método rápido Colilert®. A contagem de coliformes totais e termotolerantes em ostras foi realizada pelo método do número mais provável (NMP) e de E. coli por testes bioquímicos (Indol, VM, VP, Citrato). A enumeração de Staphylococcus coagulase positiva ocorreu pelo meio Baird Parker para isolamento e identificação, assim como por testes bioquímicos. A média geométrica do resultado da contagem de E. coli nas amostras de água variou entre 604,3 e 1.130,8 NMP/100 mL, indicando qualidade microbiológica insatisfatória. Quanto às amostras de ostras, oito (26,7%) das 30 amostras estavam impróprias para consumo, sendo quatro (13,3%) contaminadas por Salmonella sp. e E. coli, respectivamente. Segundo a Resolução da Diretoria Colegiada nº 331/19 e a Instrução Normativa nº 60 da Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária, os resultados são preocupantes para a saúde pública, e recomendam-se ações mitigadoras, como o monitoramento regular da qualidade microbiológica da água. ABSTRACT In order to evaluate the microbiological quality of water and oysters from natural banks and oyster farms located on the Island of São Luís, Maranhão (MA), 60 samples were analyzed from September 2020 to February 2021, 30 of water and 30 of oysters (Crassostrea sp.), collected directly from shellfish farmers and owners of oyster farms in the municipalities of the Island of São Luís, MA. For the determination of total coliforms and Escherichia coli in the water samples the Colilert® rapid method was used. For the enumeration of total and thermotolerant coliforms in oysters the Most Probable Number (MPN) method was used and E. coli by biochemical tests (Indol, MV, VP, Citrate). The enumeration of coagulase positive Staphylococcus was performed using Baird Parker medium for isolation and identification, as well as biochemical tests. The geometric mean result of E. coli counts in the water samples ranged from 604.3 to 1,130.8 MPN/100mL, indicating unsatisfactory microbiological quality. As for the oyster samples, 8 (26.7%) out of 30 samples were unfit for consumption, and 4 (13.3%) were contaminated by Salmonella sp. and E. coli, respectively. According to RDC No. 331/19 and IN No. 60 of ANVISA, the results are worrisome for public health and mitigating actions are recommended, such as regular monitoring of the microbiological quality of the water. Objective: Multimorbidity, or the occurrence of two or more chronic conditions, is a global challenge, with implications for mortality, morbidity, disability, and life quality. Psychiatric disorders are common among the chronic diseases that affect patients with multimorbidity. It is still not well understood whether psychiatric symptoms, especially depressive symptoms, moderate the effect of multimorbidity on cognition. Methods: We used a large (n=2,681) dataset to assess whether depressive symptomatology moderates the effect of multimorbidity on cognition using structural equation modelling. Results: It was found that the more depressive symptoms and chronic conditions, the worse the cognitive performance, and the higher the educational level, the better the cognitive performance. We found a significant but weak (0.009; p = 0.04) moderating effect. Conclusion: We have provided the first estimate of the moderating effect of depression on the relation between multimorbidity and cognition, which was small. Although this moderation has been implied by many previous studies, it was never previously estimated.

RESUMEN El diésel es una mezcla compleja de hidrocarburos alifáticos y aromáticos, que por su amplio uso se ha convertido en un contaminante ambiental muy frecuente. Debido a esto, es imperativo explorar alternativas viables y económicas para la remoción de dicho contaminante. El propósito del presente trabajo fue analizar la degradación de diésel por bacterias aisladas de suelo contaminado con esa mezcla de hidrocarburos, así como evaluar su actividad antagónica sobre hongos fitopatógenos, sus características de promoción del crecimiento vegetal y tolerancia a metales. A partir del enriquecimiento en diésel como única fuente de carbono, se obtuvieron los aislados bacterianos J3 y S3, cuya identificación bioquímica y molecular reveló que corresponden a Pseudomonas aeruginosa y Enterobacter sp., respectivamente. Además, se observó que el crecimiento bacteriano fue mejor entre 2 y 5 % de diésel, mientras que el pH óptimo fue de 7,0 y 8,0 en presencia de 3 % de diésel. También, S3 mostró buen crecimiento a concentraciones de hasta 4 % de NaCl. Por otro lado, las bacterias mostraron inhibición del crecimiento micelial de los hongos fitopatógenos Alternaria sp., Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum siamense y Fusarium proliferatum. Además de características de promoción de crecimiento vegetal como producción de ácido indol acético (AIA), solubilización de fosfato, producción de sideróforos y surfactantes. También, se observó que las bacterias crecieron en presencia de metales como Zn, Cu, Ba y Pb, en concentraciones de entre 1,5 y >10 mM. En conclusión, las bacterias aisladas e identificadas en este estudio presentan características que las hacen excelentes candidatas para la remoción de hidrocarburos solas o mediante fitorremediación por sus características de promoción de crecimiento vegetal.
ABSTRACT Diesel oil is a complex mixture of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, which due to the wide usage has become a frequent environmental pollutant. Then, it is imperative to explore viable and economic alternatives for diesel oil degradation. The purpose of this work was to analyze the degradation of diesel oil by bacteria isolated from polluted soil, as well as to evaluate the antagonistic activity against phytopathogenic fungi, the plant growth promotion characteristics, and metal tolerance. From the enrichment in diesel oil as carbon source the J3 and S3 bacterial isolates were obtained, the biochemical and molecular identification indicates that these isolates were Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter sp., respectively. Furthermore, the bacterial growth between 2 and 5 % of diesel oil was better, whereas the optimal pH was of 7.0 and 8.0 in the presence of 3 % of diesel oil, also, S3 showed growth at concentration of 4 % of NaCl. Even more, both bacteria showed inhibition of the phytopathogenic fungi Alternaria sp., Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum siamense and Fusarium proliferatum and plant growth promoting traits as indoleacetic acid (IAA) production, phosphate solubilization, siderophores and surfactant production. Also, bacterial growth was observed specially for Zn, Cu, Ba, and Pb, in concentrations between 1.5 and >10 mM. In conclusion, the bacteria identified in this study presented characteristics that made them good candidates for the remotion of hydrocarbons alone or by phytoremediation due to its characteristics of plant growth promotion.
