ABSTRACT Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is one of the most widely used analgesics and antipyretics in the world. It's easy acquisition, however, has frequently involved it in accidental and intentional poisonings, which, depending on the dose ingested, could lead to liver damage. To counteract this problem, several countries and agencies have regulated the sale and use of paracetamol. Even so, recent studies have shown an increase in suicidal intoxications using paracetamol or other drugs, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim: Characterize the variation in the number of paracetamol poisonings in Chile, registered by the Poison Control Center of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (CITUC), during the last 5 years. Methods: Observational study of the calls for cases of paracetamol ingestion, admitted to CITUC, between 2019 and 2023. Results: eleven thousand thirty-nine cases of paracetamol exposure were recorded, where 68.8% of these were related to suicidal ideation. This type of poisoning showed an 11% increase as of 2020. Female patients accounted for 80.3% of the cases of paracetamol ingestion for suicidal purposes, while in 56.6% of the cases of suicidal ideation, the patients reached potentially hepatotoxic doses of paracetamol. Conclusions: Paracetamol poisoning with suicidal intent has progressively and significantly increased in Chile since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. It is therefore necessary to replicate and implement preventive measures used by other countries to reduce poisonings related to this drug, in addition to taking steps to optimize the management of these cases.

Abstract The emergence of Machine Learning (ML) technologies and their integration into agriculture has demonstrated a significant impact on disease detection in crops, enabling continuous monitoring and enhancing risk planning and management. This study applied image processing techniques such as thresholding, gamma correction, and the Stretched Neighborhood Effect Color to Grayscale (SNECG) method, alongside ML, to develop a predictive model for identifying five types of rice diseases. The ML techniques used included Logistic Regression, Multilayer Perceptron, Support Vector Machines, Decision Trees, and Random Forests (RF). Hyperparameters were optimized and evaluated through 5-fold cross-validation. In the results, the SNECG method successfully converted images to grayscale, capturing essential features of lesions on rice leaves. The ML models developed with these techniques showed evaluation metrics exceeding 80%, with the RF model (precision = 88.31%) demonstrating superior performance. Additionally, the RF model was integrated into an interface designed for agricultural decision-making. The practical application of the developed model could significantly improve the ability to detect and manage diseases in rice crops.

Abstract Introduction: Poisoning is a global public health problem due to the various substances involved. The Toxicological Information Center of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, CITUC, founded in 1992 in Chile, has managed over 75,000 toxicological emergencies. Knowing the profile of poisonings and their evolution allows us to develop strategies for prioritization, prevention, and intervention. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study of the calls received at the CITUC poison center during 2023 was carried out using the CITUC SRL® software for data recording, extraction, and analysis. Results: In 2023, CITUC received 32,731 reports. Most came from the Metropolitan Region. The callers were primarily doctors (71.6%). As for the patients, 45.5% were adults, and the predominant sex was female (63.3%). 50.6% of cases corresponded to suicide attempts (primarily adults and adolescents), followed by accidental exposures (34.9%) in children under 12 years of age. In 51.5% of cases, they were over toxicity ranges and 60.3% presented symptoms during the call. The most frequent agents were medications, which reached 77.7%, primarily quetiapine, paracetamol, and clonazepam. The second most frequent group of agents was cleaning products, where household chlorine predominated. Conclusions: The results of this study show a worrying increase in cases of drug poisoning over the last 10 years, mainly in the context of suicidal ideation in adults and adolescents who enter health care services. Since the epidemiology of poisonings is dynamic, showing trends and scenarios that vary over time, it is necessary to maintain constant monitoring and publish data periodically.

Abstract: Adrenal tumors in children are frequently neoplastic and malignant, and surgical resection is the first management option. Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has proven to be a safe management alternative and is suggested as a preferred alternative approach. Objective: To report the surgical outcomes of patients with adrenal tumors treated by MIS. Patients and Method: Retrospective descriptive study of a cohort of pediatric patients with adrenal gland tumors undergoing MIS in the period 2012 - 2023. Results: 15 MIS of the adrenal gland were performed in 14 patients, 60% were male, mean age 1.8 years (range: 5 days - 7 years). Histological diagnoses included neuroblastoma (n = 7), pheochromocytoma (n = 3), ganglioneuroma (n = 2), extrapulmonary sequestration (n = 1), mature teratoma (n = 1), and adrenal cortical neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential (n = 1). 14 adrenalectomies and one biopsy were performed, all via laparoscopic surgery, with no need for conversion to open surgery. No perioperative complications greater than Clavien-Dindo grade II were recorded; only 2 patients required red blood cell transfusions and there was no perioperative mortality. The mean tumor diameter was 3.7 cm. The median hospital stay was 1 day. The mean follow-up period was 29 months. Conclusions: The laparoscopic technique has proven to be a safe approach in pediatric patients with adrenal tumors, offering advantages in terms of hospital stay and perioperative complications.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The variability in clinical severity among patients with COVID-19 and the development of severe symptoms, as well as the evolution of convalescents, may be due to possible models that combine genetic and non-genetic risk factors. Objective: To characterize the risk factors for morbidity and mortality and the specific response of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies during convalescence, in relation to severity, in patients recovered from the first COVID-19 outbreak in Cuba. Methods: It was carried out a cross-sectional study of 1182 cases confirmed between March 11th and June 11th of 2020. They were divided into three groups: asymptomatic, those with mild or moderate symptoms and severely ill patients. They were determined the ABO blood group, the study of gene polymorphisms related to the immune response, lymphocyte subpopulations, and the anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody response in convalescence. They were also analyzed data of 84 deaths by COVID-19. Results: The risk of death after contracting the disease was 12.6 times higher in persons over 60 years of age (95%CI 6.3;25.2), and 2.4 times higher in men than in women (95% CI 1.4;4.2). Persons with chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus or cancer, had a higher risk of dying. They were identified the -308A>G polymorphisms of the TNF alpha gene, A16974C of the IL-12 p40 gene, and TaqI of the VDR gene as possible predisposing factors for the development of symptomatic forms. It was found in convalescent patients with severe forms an increase in CD3 + CD8 + and NK cells. It was found total anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the serum in 62.2% of the convalescents (95% CI 59.1;65.4). Seropositivity to total anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, specific IgG antibody titers against the receptor-binding domain (RBD), its ability to inhibit the RBD-angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor bond and its avidity, were higher in cases with severe forms of COVID-19. Conclusions: The vulnerabilities identified in population groups, as well as the characteristics of the humoral anti-SARS-CoV-2 response during convalescence, provided useful evidence for the dynamic updating of the action protocols in the country, including the immunization strategies. This study allowed us to have our own references to evaluate the immunogenicity of Cuban vaccine candidates.

ABSTRACT Tax education, by directing its efforts towards the inculcation of values and attitudes that promote fiscal responsibility and discourage evasion practices, is an essential component for the positive transformation of citizens' perception of their tax obligations. In this sense, the objective of this research is to analyze the impact of tax education in Latin American countries, focusing on tax collection, the reduction of tax evasion and the level of compliance with tax obligations. To achieve this, a mixed approach was used. The results obtained indicate the need to move away from the traditional approach focused on sanctions, suggesting the adoption of a more educational and participatory approach. Concrete strategies, such as active collaboration with educational institutions and the promotion of tax culture from the early formative stages, evidence a palpable commitment to cultural transformation towards a more tax conscious and responsible society.

Abstract Soil humidity is an important environmental factor that affect composition, diversity and structure of the vegetal communities. The objective of the present study was to determine the diversity changes that occur over an environmental gradient limited by the source of water of the oasis San Ignacio and the adjoining desert of Baja California Sur, Mexico. The study area was divided in nine strips of 100 m width. Over them, there were randomly selected 140 plots of 500, 20 and 1 m2 to register the vegetal species present in the tree, shrub and herbaceous layers, respectively. Species richness, Shannon-Weiner diversity, Simpson dominance, Pielou equity and true species value indexes were estimated and compared between established strips. The qualitative index of Sörensen was estimated to evaluate species similitude and similar communities were grouped applying dendrograms. The species richness of the herbaceous and shrub layers falls abruptly at 520 and 720 m far away from the source of water. Species richness and diversity in the tree layer presented an undefined tendency. The similitude index allowed to concentrate the herbaceous, shrub and tree vegetation layers in 4, 5 and 3 clusters. This diversity analysis suggests to determine that herbaceous and shrub species are more sensitive to humidity changes than arboreal species.

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to identify areas of agroclimatic aptitude for Eucalyptus urophylla cultivation in MATOPIBA. The agroclimatic aptitude classes for the species were determined considering the temperature and water needs, being adopted three different values of available water capacity (AWC), using a geographic information system (GIS). The agroclimatic aptitude classes for all AWCs analyzed identified the existence of full cultivation in some regions but with a predominance of restricted areas. The fit zones predominated in the mountainous regions of Bahia, southern Maranhão and northwest of Tocantins. There was a percentage increase in the aptitude area favorable for E. urophylla (apt) cultivation, from 7.68% to 29.13%, considering the AWC values of 100 and 220 mm, respectively.

Abstract Background: Loxoscelism refers to a set of clinical manifestations caused by the bite of spiders from the Loxosceles genus. The classic clinical symptoms are characterized by an intense inflammatory reaction at the bite site followed by local necrosis and can be classified as cutaneous loxoscelism. This cutaneous form presents difficult healing, and the proposed treatments are not specific or effective. This study aimed to evaluate the protective effect of mesenchymal stromal cells-derived secretome on dermonecrosis induced by Loxosceles intermedia spider venom in rabbits. Methods: Sixteen rabbits were distributed into four groups (n = 4). Except for group 1 (G1), which received only PBS, the other three groups (G2, G3, and G4) were initially challenged with 10 μg of L. intermedia venom, diluted in 100 μL of NaCl 0.9%, by intradermic injection in the interscapular region. Thirty minutes after the challenge all groups were treated with secretome, except for group 2. Group 1 (G1-control group) received intradermal injection (ID) of 60 μg of secretome in 0.15 M PBS; Group 2 (G2) received 0.9% NaCl via ID; Group 3 (G3) received 60 μg of secretome, via ID and Group 4 (G4), received 60 μg of secretome by intravenous route. Rabbits were evaluated daily and after 15 days were euthanized, necropsied and skin samples around the necrotic lesions were collected for histological analysis. Results: Rabbits of G1 did not present edema, erythema, hemorrhagic halo, or necrosis. In animals from G2, G3, and G4, edema appeared after 6h. However, minor edema was observed in the animals of G2 and G3. Hemorrhagic halo was observed in animals, six hours and three days after, on G2, G3, and G4. Macroscopically, in G4, only one animal out of four had a lesion that evolved into a dermonecrotic wound. No changes were observed in the skin of the animals of G1, by microscopic evaluation. All animals challenged with L. intermedia venom showed similar alterations, such as necrosis and heterophilic infiltration. However, animals from G4 showed fibroblast activation, early development of connective tissue, neovascularization, and tissue re-epithelialization, indicating a more prominent healing process. Conclusion: These results suggest that secretome from mesenchymal stromal cells cultured in a xeno-free and human component-free culture media can be promising to treat dermonecrosis caused after Loxosceles spiders bite envenoming.

Abstract Introduction: Sustainable management of oases needs knowledge of the conditions of composition and diversity of the species living there. Objective: Estimating and comparing the diversity and structure of vegetation in the tree, shrub and herbaceous strata of the San Ignacio oasis, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Materials and methods: A total of 140 circular sites (500 m2) were randomly located, where 20 m2 and 1 m2 sites were nested to record the vegetation in the herbaceous, shrub and tree strata. Species richness, Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, Pielou and species importance value indices were used to estimate plant diversity in the strata and to characterize their structure. Results and discussion: A total of 53 taxa were distributed in 17 orders, 25 families and 47 genera. Richness, diversity and homogeneity were higher in the herbaceous stratum (S = 41, H´ = 3.21, J´ = 8.64, respectively) and lower in the arboreal stratum (S = 21, H´ = 2.01, J´= 0.688). Regarding the importance value index, the species with the highest ecological weight was Prosopis articulata S. Watson (33.35 %) for the herbaceous stratum, Cylindropuntia alcahes (F. A. B. Weber) F. M. Kunth (65.60 %) for shrub and Phoenix dactylifera L. (92.94 %) for the arboreal stratum. Conclusions: Vegetation richness and diversity were higher in the herbaceous stratum. This study represents a baseline of indicators useful for the evaluation of changes generated by natural or anthropogenic events in the San Ignacio oasis.
