ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the hearing habits of a group of students between public and private schools and compare the degree of exposure to sound stimuli via earphones. Methods: 1,085 public and private school students received a questionnaire on hearing habits and exposure to amplified music. Their answers to these questions were analyzed and compared between the groups of students. The chi-square test compared hearing habits between public and private schools, with the statistical significance level set at 5% (p < 0.05). Result: in general, most students (92%) reported hearing habits of exposure to amplified music. Questionnaire answers indicated a high prevalence of both earphone use (92%) and attendance at places with loud music (63.6%). Conclusion: private school students use earphones more often than those from public schools.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar os hábitos auditivos de um grupo de alunos e comparar o grau de exposição ao estímulo sonoro via fones de ouvido entre escolas públicas e privadas. Métodos: foram distribuídos questionários contendo perguntas referentes a hábitos auditivos de exposição à música amplificada, aos 1085 alunos de escolas pública e privada. Em seguida, as respostas aos questionamentos foram analisadas e comparadas entre os grupos de alunos. Utilizou-se o teste Qui-quadrado com um nível de significância estatística estabelecido em 5% (p<0,05) para se comparar os hábitos auditivos entre as escolas públicas e privadas. Resultado: de modo geral, a maioria dos alunos (92%) respondeu que tem hábitos auditivos de exposição à música amplificada. Tanto o uso de fones de ouvido (92%) quanto as idas a lugares com música alta (63,6%) tiveram alta prevalência nas respostas aos questionários. Conclusão: alunos de escolas particulares utilizam mais fones de ouvido frequentemente comparados aos alunos de escolas públicas.

Abstract Introduction The importance of temporal ordering and sequencing in the auditory system is discussed because these are considered basic functions for language. Objective To verify the correlation between the practice of choir music and the temporal ordering in elderly with no prior formal musical experience. Method The study design is cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 85 elderly individuals of both genders, ≥ 60 years old, and it was composed of 43 elderly individuals with no prior formal musical experience but choir participation (research group) and 42 elderly individuals who never sang in a choir and had no music training during their life (control group). The research group was divided based on three categories of choir time. The performances of the research and control groups were compared with pitch pattern sequence (PPS), verbal condition (PPSverb), humming condition (PPShum), and duration pattern sequence (DPS) tests. Results The mean PPShum and PPSverb showed a statistically significant difference by choir time with a different mean of PPShum between the no singing experience group (59%) and the > 10 years of singing experience group (90%) (p= 0.02). Regarding the averages of PPSverb, there was a statistically significant difference between the no singing experience (23%) and > 10 years of choir time (54%) (p= 0.02) groups. Conclusion The findings indicate a better performance in the temporal ordering of the elderly who are not formal musicians but who have choir experience in the research group in relation to those with no choir experience in the control group.

RESUMO Objetivo analisar os desempenhos linguístico e cognitivo, a presença de relato de mudança na audição, a queixa e a autopercepção auditiva de idosos frequentadores de um centro comunitário brasileiro e verificar a associação entre essas variáveis. Métodos foram analisados os dados demográficos de 61 indivíduos; a presença de relato de mudança na audição nos últimos cinco anos e de queixa auditiva; o desempenho linguístico, por meio da Bateria Montreal-Toulouse; os resultados do teste de rastreio cognitivo, por meio do Miniexame do Estado Mental e a autopercepção auditiva, por meio da versão reduzida do questionário de autoavaliação de restrição de participação auditiva para idosos. Resultados a média de idade foi de 71 anos e de escolaridade foi de seis anos. Os escores dos testes aplicados indicaram a presença de declínio cognitivo e de alteração em alguma tarefa de linguagem, especialmente do discurso narrativo. Quanto aos relatos sobre o quadro auditivo, 38 idosos referiram mudança auditiva nos últimos cinco anos. Houve associação estatisticamente significativa entre a presença de mudança e queixa auditiva e a alteração nos testes de rastreio cognitivo e de fluência verbal. Os escores do teste de autopercepção de restrição de participação auditiva estiveram associados aos escores do subteste linguístico de repetição. Conclusão os idosos de um centro comunitário brasileiro apresentaram alta prevalência de mudanças auditivas nos últimos cinco anos e queixas auditivas relacionadas ao envelhecimento, associadas ao desempenho linguístico-cognitivo, o que evidencia a relevância do acompanhamento longitudinal do desempenho comunicativo e cognitivo de idosos.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the linguistic and cognitive performance, the presence of reports of changes in hearing, the complaint and the auditory self-perception of elderly people who attend a Brazilian community center, and to verify the relationship between these variables. Methods Demographic data of 61 subjects were analyzed; the presence of reports of changes in hearing in the last five years and hearing complaints; linguistic performance through the Montreal-Toulouse Battery; the results of the cognitive screening test through the Mini-Mental State Examination; and auditory self-perception by the short version of the self-assessment questionnaire on auditory participation restriction for the elderly. Results The mean age was 71 years and schooling was six years. The scores of the tests applied indicated the presence of cognitive decline and alteration in some language task, especially in the narrative speech. With regard to reports about the auditory condition, 38 elderly people reported hearing change in the last five years. There was a statistically significant association between the presence of hearing changes and complaints and changes in cognitive screening and verbal fluency tests. The scores of the self-perception of auditory participation restriction test were associated with the scores of the repetition linguistic subtest. Conclusion The elderly in a Brazilian community center showed a high prevalence of hearing changes in the last five years and hearing complaints related to aging, which were associated with linguistic-cognitive performance, which highlights the relevance of longitudinal monitoring of the communicative and cognitive performance of the elderly

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a associação entre musicalização infantil e habilidades auditivas de ordenação temporal e localização sonora em pré-escolares de 5 e 6 anos. Métodos Participaram do estudo 60 crianças de ambos os sexos, de 5 anos a 6 anos e 11 meses, sendo 30 do grupo com treinamento musical e 30 do grupo sem treinamento musical. Os participantes de ambos os grupos foram submetidos à triagem auditiva, avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo e ao teste Padrão de Frequência, em campo livre. Os desempenhos de cada um dos procedimentos foram tabulados, analisando-se as possíveis correlações e associações entre eles, como variáveis dependentes e variáveis independentes, como grupo, sexo e idade. Resultados O grupo com treinamento musical apresentou média de acertos superior ao grupo sem treinamento musical, nos testes de memória sequencial não verbal e verbal, teste Padrão de Frequência não verbal e verbal. Sujeitos de 5 anos do grupo com treinamento musical obtiveram melhor desempenho, em relação aos sujeitos de 5 anos do grupo sem treinamento musical, acertando mais sequências. No teste de localização sonora, não houve diferença entre a idade e o grupo. Conclusão Pré-escolares de 5 e 6 anos que participavam de musicalização infantil apresentaram melhor desempenho nos testes que avaliaram as habilidades de memória sequencial não verbal e verbal e de ordenação temporal de três sons, quando comparados aos pré-escolares que não participavam de musicalização. Portanto, a musicalização infantil influenciou positivamente as habilidades auditivas de pré-escolares de 5 e 6 anos.

ABSTRACT Purpose Verify the association between children’s music learning and listening skills of temporal ordering and sound localization in preschoolers from 5 to 6 years old. Methods 60 children of both genders, from 5 to 6 years and 11 months, participated in the study, 30 of the group with music training and the other 30 of the group with no music training. The participants of both groups were submitted to hearing screening, simplified auditory processing assessment and to the Pitch Pattern Sequence. The performance of each of the procedures was tabulated, being analyzed the possible correlations and associations between them, as, for example, dependent and independent variables such as group, gender and age. Results The group with music training presented higher mean of scores than the one with no music training in the verbal and nonverbal sequential memory tests and on the verbal and nonverbal Pitch Pattern Sequence. The 5-year-old children of the group with music training got better results than the 5-year-old ones with no music training, getting right in more sequences. In the sound localization test, there was no difference between ages and groups. Conclusion Preschoolers from 5 to 6 years old who participated in children’s music learning presented better performance in the tests that evaluate the abilities of the verbal and non-verbal sequential memory and of the temporal ordering of three sounds when compared to the preschoolers who did not participate in the music learning. Therefore, the children’s music learning positively influenced the listening skills of preschoolers from 5 to 6 years old.

Resumo Introdução A otosclerose é uma osteodistrofia do osso temporal, caracterizada pela reabsorção e neoformação óssea desordenadas em indivíduos geneticamente predispostos. Clinicamente, a otosclerose é caracterizada por perda auditiva progressiva condutiva e/ou mista e por zumbido. Objetivo Uma revisão das últimas duas décadas de publicações que relatam o grau de melhora do zumbido com a estapedectomia. Método Foram analisados 125 artigos publicados nos últimos 20 anos que mencionavam a relação entre otosclerose e zumbido. A literatura sempre mostrou a melhoria auditiva como principal objetivo e resultado da estapedectomia. No entanto, artigos recentes reforçaram a necessidade de cirurgia para a melhoria do zumbido. O momento ideal para avaliar o zumbido através de diferentes escalas é no sexto mês pós-operatório. A melhoria auditiva média estimada é de 93% e a do zumbido, de 85,52%. Resultados Foram revisados resumos de 12 artigos que preencheram os critérios de pesquisa, foram incluídos no estudo 8 artigos de acordo com os critérios de seleção. Este estudo investiga o grau de melhora do zumbido com a estapedectomia, utilizando diferentes escalas: tinnitus functional index, escala visual analógica, tinnitus functional index e escala visual analógica, escala visual analógica e "questionário sobre o zumbido", método de Newman e o Tinnitus Score Advocated, da Sociedade Audiológica do Japão (Japan Audiological Society). O total das amostras dos artigos avaliados foi de 254 participantes. Conclusão Concluímos que a estapedectomia é bastante eficaz no tratamento do zumbido (melhoria média de 85,52%) e perda auditiva (melhoria média de 93%). Ao decidir sobre a indicação cirúrgica em pacientes com otosclerose, a presença e o nível de zumbido devem ser considerados, assim como o nível de audição.

Abstract Introduction Otospongiosis is temporal bone osteodystrophy, characterized by disordered bone resorption and neoformation in genetically predisposed individuals. Clinically, otospongiosis is characterized by progressive conductive and/or mixed hearing loss and by tinnitus. Objective A review of the last two decades of publications that report the degree of tinnitus improvement with stapes surgery. Methods 125 articles published in the last 20 years mentioning the relationship between otosclerosis and tinnitus. Literature has always shown that the hearing improvement after stapes surgery was the main result sought and found. However, recent articles has reinforced the need for surgery for the tinnitus improvement. The ideal time to assess tinnitus through different scales is in the sixth month post-operative. The estimated average hearing improvement is 93% and tinnitus is 85.52%. Results Summaries of 12 articles were reviewed which fulfilled the search criteria of the survey, and 8 studies were included in the study according the selection criteria. This studies investigating the degree of tinnitus improvement with stapes surgery, using different scales as: tinnitus functional index, visual analog scale, tinnitus functional index and visual analog scale, visual analog scale and "questionnaire asking about tinnitus", Newman's method and Tinnitus Score Advocated by the Japan Audiological Society. The total of the samples of the evaluated articles was of 254 participants. Conclusion We conclude that stapes surgery is effective for the treatment of tinnitus (average improvement is 85.52%), and hearing loss (average improvement is 93%). When deciding about the surgical indication in patients with otosclerosis, the presence and level tinnitus should be considered as well as the level of hearing.

Objetivo : analisar os fatores que interferem no desempenho de usuários de implante coclear em testes de percepção de fala.Métodos : foram aplicados questionários e testes de percepção de fala em 25 indivíduos, de ambos os sexos, portadores de perda auditiva neurossensorial e usuários de IC unilateral.Resultados : - 48% dos participantes atingiram bom desempenho nos resultados dos testes de percepção de fala, apresentando porcentagens maiores ou iguais a 50 % de acertos. - Os participantes que obtiveram melhores resultados não são necessariamente os que possuem maior idade auditiva. - Dos 12 participantes que atingiram desempenho acima de 50%, 10 (83,3%) foram implantados mais precocemente (até 5 anos). - O uso do AASI na orelha contralateral influenciou significantemente nos índices de reconhecimento das palavras ou sentenças. - Os participantes que iniciaram o uso de AASI mais cedo não foram necessariamente os que apresentaram melhores resultados nos testes.Conclusão : a ativação mais precoce dos IC mostrou-se uma variável importante no desempenho dos testes. - O uso do AASI na orelha contralateral influenciou significantemente nos índices de reconhecimento das palavras ou sentenças.

Purpose : to analyze the relation between speech perception tests in cochlear implant users.Methods : questionnaires and speech perception tests were applied in 25 individuals from both genders with sensorioneural hearing loss and users of unilateral cochlear implant.Results : 48% of the participants had a good performance (50%) on speech perception tests. The participants who had the best results are not the ones with higher auditory age. 12 participants had a score higher than 50% and 10 (83%) of those, did the cochlear implant surgery before 5 years old. The use of hearing aid contralateral to the cochlear implant had a significant influence on the participants performances on tests. The participants who started using hearing aids earlier did not have the best results on the tests.Conclusion : the early activation of the cochlear implant is an important variable on the tests performance. The use of hearing aid contralateral to the cochlear implant had a significant influence on the speech recognition tests.

Introduction  The CHARGE association (coloboma of the eyes; heart disease; atresia of the choanae; retarded growth and development; genital hypoplasia/genitourinary anomalies; ear anomalies and/or hearing loss) was first described in 1979 by Hall, and among its main features is hearing loss. This study presents a case aiming to establish relationships between performance on Infant Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale (IT-MAIS) and Meaningful Use of Speech Scales (MUSS) tests and the analysis of hearing and language categories of a patient diagnosed with CHARGE syndrome, before and after cochlear implant (CI) surgery. Case Report  A 7-year-old girl was diagnosed with CHARGE. She had severe sensorineural hearing loss and was a prelingual unilateral CI user. We analyzed data from the patient's medical records regarding therapies and video recordings. Results  The patient showed positive results in all evaluations after CI. IT-MAIS rose from 5 to 90% following the use of CI. MUSS also rose, from 75 to 72.5%, after use of CI. Classification of Auditory Skills changed from category 1 before use of CI to category 6 after use of CI. Classification of Language Skills changed from category 1 before use of CI to category 3 after use of CI. The CI is an aid but there are many factors in the therapeutic process, and great heterogeneity in individuals diagnosed with CHARGE should be investigated. Conclusion  The development of listening and language skills after CI use was demonstrated by IT-MAIS and MUSS tests, and categorization of speech and hearing in this child with a diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome shows that CI can be an effective technological resource to provide information on hearing as one source for language construction.

As alterações hormonais ocorridas em pouco espaço de tempo promovem modificações em todo o organismo da mulher, com manifestações físicas e emocionais muitas vezes evidentes. OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade das células ciliadas externas em mulheres durante o ciclo menstrual, observando os efeitos das alterações hormonais impostas pelo ciclo em suas três fases. MATERIAL E MÉTODO: Trata-se de um estudo longitudinal prospectivo que avaliou 21 mulheres entre 20 e 35 anos que não faziam uso de medicamento contraceptivo (dados obtidos em anamnese). Foi realizada avaliação das emissões otoacústicas transientes e por produto de distorção durante as três fases do ciclo hormonal (lútea, folicular e ovulatória). Para análise geral dos dados foi utilizado o programa SPSS 13.0, RESULTADOS: As três fases do ciclo hormonal não alteram os valores de amplitude e reprodutibilidade das emissões otoacústicas transientes e por produto de distorção. Foi verificada diferença entre as orelhas na freqüência de 1,5 kHz na amplitude das emissões por produto de distorção, tendo a orelha direita os maiores valores. CONCLUSÃO: Com a realização deste estudo pôde-se concluir que não há diferenças significantes das emissões otoacústicas transientes e por produto de distorção entre as fases do ciclo hormonal.

The hormonal changes that occur in a short time span promote modifications all over the woman’s body, with physical and emotional manifestations which are frequently observed. AIM: to evaluate the activity of the external ciliated cells in women during their menstrual cycle, observing the effect of hormonal changes caused by the cycle in their 3 phases. METODS: this is a longitudinal prospective study where 21 women between 20 and 35 years old who did not take any contraceptive medicine were assessed. Transient otoacoustic emissions were evaluated by distortion product during the 3 phases of the menstrual cycle (luteal, follicular and ovulatory phases). The SPSS 13.0 software was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: the phases of menstrual cycle do not alter the amplitude and reproducibility values of the transient otoacoustic emissions. We noticed a difference between the ears in the frequency of 1.5 KHz in the amplitude of emissions by distortion product, and the right ear showed the highest values. CONCLUSION: There are no significant differences in transient otoacoustic emissions and distortion products in the phases of the menstrual cycle.

A audiometria de alta freqüência é capaz de detectar precocemente alterações em sensibilidade advindas de processos como o envelhecimento. Seu uso é limitado, o que recomenda estudos para esclarecer seu desempenho, especialmente entre adultos de mais idade. OBJETIVO: Comparar os limiares para as freqüências de 250Hz a 16kHz, entre adultos jovens e mais velhos normoacúsicos, com e sem queixa audiológica. CASUÍSTICA E MÉTODO: A sensibilidade a tons puros de 250Hz a 16kHz foi avaliada com audiômetro AC-40, em 64 adultos, igualmente distribuídos: jovens (25 a 35 anos) e mais velhos (45 a 55 anos) de ambos os gêneros, com forma de estudo de coorte transversal. RESULTADOS: Os adultos mais velhos apresentaram limiares mais elevados em todas as freqüências, mais significativamente nas mais altas (8 a 16kHz), quando comparados com os adultos jovens. Homens apresentaram limiares mais elevados do que mulheres entre 3 e 10kHz. CONCLUSÃO: O processo de envelhecimento auditivo, envolvendo perda de sensibilidade auditiva para altas freqüências, pode ser detectado em idades anteriores às tipicamente pesquisadas, uma vez que a audiometria de alta freqüência demonstrou ser instrumento importante para distinguir a sensibilidade auditiva entre adultos jovens e mais velhos, quando audiologicamente normais.

High-frequency audiometry can detect early changes in auditory sensitivity resulting from processes such as aging. Nonetheless its use is still limited, and additional studies are required to establish its use, particularly among older adults. AIM: To compare pure tone thresholds for frequencies from 250 Hz to 16 kHz in young and older adults, with or without audiologic complaints. METHOD: Pure tone sensitivity to 250 Hz to 16 kHz was assessed with an AC-40 audiometer in 64 adults, evenly distributed in young (25 to 35 years-old) and older (45 to 55 years-old) adults of both sexes. This is a cross-sectional study. RESULTS: Although all participants presented normal audiometry in frequencies from 250 Hz to 8 kHz, according to clinical parameters, older adults had significantly higher thresholds compared to young adults, according to statistical parameters, with greater significance in higher frequencies (8 to 16 kHz). Presence or absence of clinical complaints did not distinguish thresholds. CONCLUSIONS: The process of auditory aging, including loss of sensitivity to higher frequencies, can be detected at earlier ages than those usually investigated. High frequency audiometry is an important instrument to distinguish auditory sensitivity in young and older adults, even for those considered as audiologically normal.
