Abstract This study evaluated factors associated with hospitalization related to the mental health of people undergoing follow-up in Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS, in Portuguese) in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, referred from Primary Health Care (PHC). This was an evaluative study conducted with 297 individuals in 24 adult CAPS. This study analyzed the prevalence ratios (PR) and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), obtained through Poisson Regression with robust variance. A statistically significant association was found with hospitalization during follow-ups in CAPS: having health insurance and/or medical plan; waiting time between the diagnosis and the first consultation with a non-medical professional of more than seven days; not having received medical advice regarding how long to use medication; not having received a psychopharmaceutical prescription at PHC; and having a medical history of the hospitalization due to mental health. The results warn of the need to expand access to the more socially vulnerable population, in addition to a restructuring of the services in order to provide more interactive and inclusive practices geared toward the singularities of the users.

Resumo Avaliaram-se os fatores associados à internação relacionadas à saúde mental de pessoas em acompanhamento nos Centros de Atenção Psicossocial (CAPS) do município de São Paulo, encaminhadas pela atenção primária (APS). Pesquisa avaliativa com 297 pessoas em 24 CAPS Adulto. Analisaram-se as razões de prevalência (RP) e seus respectivos intervalos de confiança de 95% (IC), obtidas por meio da regressão de Poisson com variância robusta. Mostraram associação estatisticamente significativa com a internação durante o acompanhamento no CAPS: ter plano de saúde/convênio médico; tempo de espera entre diagnóstico e primeiro atendimento com profissional não médico maior que sete dias; não ter sido orientado sobre o tempo de uso da medicação; não receber prescrição de psicofármaco na APS; e ter histórico de ocorrência de internação por saúde mental. Os resultados alertam para a necessidade de ampliação do acesso à população com maior vulnerabilidade social, além de uma reestruturação dos serviços para a oferta de prática mais articuladas e inclusivas, voltadas às singularidades dos usuários.

Abstract The scope of this article is to analyze the timeline trend of homicides of women between 2007 and 2019, in the Southeast region of Brazil. It is a mixed ecological study of homicides in women, from 2007 to 2019, considering the years of the study and the states that that make up the Southeast region as the unit of analysis. The data were obtained via the Mortality Information System (SIM) and tabulated by TABNET. The Prais-Winten regression model was used to verify the homicide trend. There were 18,415 homicides of women between 2007 and 2019 in the Southeast region. A total of 9,691 (53.64%) were black women, 5,118 (27.8%) had 4 to 7 years of schooling and 10,841 (58.87%) were single. The annual percentage variations were: São Paulo -3.73 ; 95%CI [-6.09; -1.32], Espírito Santo -5.67 ; 95%CI [-7.11;-4.21], Rio de Janeiro -3.86; 95%CI [-9.54; 2.17] and Minas Gerais -2.11 ; 95%CI [-4.87; 0.73]. São Paulo and Espírito Santo presented decreasing homicide rates for women, while Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro showed stationary rates. The highest homicide rates in the period were single women, black women and women with 4 to 7 years of schooling. It is necessary to build social networks that ensure the full protection of women.

Resumo O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a tendência temporal de homicídios de mulheres no período de 2007 a 2019, na região Sudeste do Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo ecológico misto dos homicídios em mulheres, de 2007 a 2019, considerando-se como unidade de análise os anos do estudo e os estados que compõem a região Sudeste. Os dados foram obtidos via Sistema de Informação sobre Mortalidade (SIM) e tabulados pelo TABNET. Empregou-se o modelo de regressão de Prais-Winsten para verificação de tendência de homicídios. Foram registrados 18.415 homicídios de mulheres entre 2007 e 2019 na região Sudeste. Cerca de 9.691 (53,64%) eram mulheres pretas, 5.118 (27,80%) com escolaridade de 4 a 7 anos e 10.841 (58,87%) solteiras. As variações percentuais anuais foram: São Paulo -3,73; IC95% [-6,09; -1,32], Espírito Santo -5,67; IC95% [-7,11; -4,21], Rio de Janeiro -3,86; IC95% [-9,54; 2,17] e Minas Gerais -2,11; IC95% [-4,87; 0,73]. São Paulo e Espírito Santo apresentaram taxas de homicídios de mulheres decrescentes, enquanto Minas Gerais e Rio de Janeiro taxas estacionárias. As maiores taxas de homicídio no período ocorreram em mulheres solteiras, pretas e com escolaridade de quatro a sete anos. Faz-se necessária a construção de redes sociais que viabilizem a proteção integral das mulheres.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Supplementation with probiotics for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) may be associated with decreased systemic inflammation. Objective: To assess the impact of oral supplementation with probiotics for patients with CKD on hemodialysis. Method: This double-blind randomized clinical trial included 70 patients on hemodialysis; 32 were given oral supplementation with probiotics and 38 were in the placebo group. Blood samples were collected at the start of the study and patients were given oral supplementation with probiotics or placebo for three months. The probiotic supplement comprised four strains of encapsulated Gram-positive bacteria: Lactobacillus Plantarum A87, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum A218 and Bifidobacterium longum A101. Patients were given one capsule per day for 3 months. Blood samples were taken throughout the study to check for inflammatory biomarkers. Non-traditional biomarkers Syndecan-1, IFN-y, NGAL, and cystatin C were measured using an ELISA kit, along with biochemical parameters CRP, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, PTH, GPT, hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose, and urea. Results: Patients given supplementation with probiotics had significant decreases in serum levels of syndecan-1 (239 ± 113 to 184 ± 106 ng/mL, p = 0.005); blood glucose levels also decreased significantly (162 ± 112 to 146 ± 74 mg/dL, p = 0.02). Conclusion: Administration of probiotics to patients with advanced CKD was associated with decreases in syndecan-1 and blood glucose levels, indicating potential improvements in metabolism and decreased systemic inflammation.

Resumo Introdução: A suplementação com probióticos na doença renal crônica (DRC) pode estar associada à redução do processo inflamatório sistêmico. Objetivo: Avaliar a suplementação oral com probióticos em pacientes com DRC em hemodiálise. Método: Ensaio clínico, duplo cego, randomizado com 70 pacientes em hemodiálise, sendo 32 do grupo que recebeu o suplemento de probióticos e 38 do grupo placebo. Inicialmente ocorreu a coleta de sangue e suplementação oral com probióticos ou placebo durante três meses. O suplemento probiótico foi composto pela combinação de 4 cepas de bactérias Gram-positivas encapsuladas: Lactobacillus Plantarum A87, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum A218 e Bifidobacterium longum A101, sendo 1 cápsula do suplemento ao dia, durante 3 meses. Após esse período foram feitas novas coletas de sangue para dosagem dos biomarcadores inflamatórios. Foram analisados os biomarcadores não tradicionais: Syndecan-1, IFN-y, NGAL e cistatina C pelo método ELISA, e os seguintes parâmetros bioquímicos: PCR, cálcio, fósforo, potássio, PTH, TGP, hematócrito, hemoglobina, glicose e ureia. Resultados: Os pacientes que receberam suplemento tiveram diminuição significativa dos níveis séricos de syndecan-1 (de 239 ± 113 para 184 ± 106 ng/mL, p = 0,005). Outro parâmetro que diminuiu significativamente nos pacientes que receberam suplemento foi a glicemia (de 162 ± 112 para 146 ± 74 mg/dL, p = 0,02). Conclusão: O uso de probióticos na DRC avançada esteve associado à redução dos níveis de syndecan-1 e glicemia, sinalizando possível melhora no metabolismo e redução do processo inflamatório sistêmico.

Com base na incorporação da profilaxia pré-exposição (PrEP) como estratégia para a prevenção do HIV, e considerando a necessidade de compreender o uso da medicação entre jovens, o artigo analisa as narrativas de homens gays e mulheres transgênero da cidade de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil, participantes no estudo PrEP1519. A pesquisa qualitativa, baseada na antropologia interpretativa, foi desenvolvida através de 10 entrevistas em profundidade com usuários de PrEP acompanhados durante pelo menos três meses entre outubro e novembro de 2019. Os resultados mostraram que o medicamento era visto como a principal motivação para participar no estudo e como estratégia combinada com o uso de preservativos, seja como prevenção adicional ou assumindo o papel principal. A medicação revelou sinais elaborados pelas performances de gênero e sua relação com outros medicamentos, principalmente a experiência de meninas trans em uso de hormonioterapia. Quanto à socialização do uso da PrEP, as narrativas mostraram que não havia segredo entre os casais, o que não significava a inexistência de estigma em relação à associação com HIV, principalmente no contexto virtual. No ambiente familiar, os participantes relatavam questões sobre a função preventiva da medicação e a natureza voluntária da participação no estudo. As narrativas dos jovens revelaram sentidos plurais atribuídos à medicação e ao seu uso social, compondo as performances tanto dos meninos quanto das meninas. Os sinais atribuídos à medicação indicaram que além da manutenção da saúde, a medicação melhora a vida e a liberdade sexual dos usuários.

Basado en la incorporación de la profilaxis previa a la exposición (PrEP) como una estrategia de prevención contra el VIH, y considerando la necesidad de entender el uso de medicación entre gente joven, este artículo analiza narrativas de hombres gais y mujeres transgénero de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil, que participan en el estudio PrEP1519. Esta es una investigación cualitativa, basada en la antropología interpretativa, desarrollada por 10 entrevistas en profundidad con usuarios de PrEP, a quienes se les realizó un seguimiento durante al menos tres meses entre octubre y noviembre de 2019. Los resultados mostraron que la medicación fue considerada como la principal motivación de participar en el estudio y como una estrategia combinada con el uso de condones, ya sea como prevención adicional, o asumiendo el papel principal. La medicación reveló signos de estar construida por el desempeño del género y su relación con otros medicamentos, especialmente la experiencia de las chicas trans en la terapia hormonal. Respecto a la socialización del uso del PrEP, las narrativas mostraron que no había secretos entre las parejas, lo cual no significó que no existieran estigmas en la asociación con el VIH, principalmente en contexto virtual. En el ambiente familiar, se informó de cuestiones sobre la función preventiva de la medicación y la naturaleza voluntaria de participar en el estudio. Las narrativas de ellos jóvenes revelaron significados plurales de la medicación y su uso social, formando parte del desempeño tanto de los chicos como de las chicas. Los signos atribuidos a la medicación indicaron que además de mantener la salud, la medicación mejora la vida y la libertad sexual.

Based on the incorporation of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as an HIV prevention strategy and considering the need to comprehend the use of medication among young people, this article analyzes narratives of gay men and transgender women from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, participating in the PrEP1519 study. This is a qualitative research, based on the interpretative anthropology, developed by 10 in-depth interviews with PrEP users followed-up for at least three months between October and November 2019. The results showed that the drug was seen as the main motivation for participating in the study and as a strategy combined with the use of condoms, whether as additional prevention, or assuming the leading role. The medication revealed signs built by the gender performances and their relation to other medications, especially the experience of trans girls in hormonal therapy. Regarding the socialization of the use of PrEP, the narratives showed that there was no secret between the couples, which did not meant that stigmas on the association with HIV did not exist, mainly in the virtual context. In the family environment, they reported questions about the preventive function of the medication and the voluntary nature of the participation in the study. The youth’s narratives revealed plural meanings of the medication and its social use, composing both the boys’ and girls’ performances. The signs attributed to the medication indicated that in addition to maintenance of health, the medication improves life and sexual freedom.

Abstract Considering the relevance of establishing biodiversity conservation tools, the study aimed to investigate the TCM199 supplemented with different follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations on survival and development of fresh and vitrified preantral follicles enclosed in red-rumped agouti ovarian tissues cultured in vitro. In the first experiment, six pairs of ovaries were fragmented and cultured for 6 days according to groups: 10 ng/mL pFSH (FSH10 group) and 50 ng/mL (FSH50 group). Non-cultured tissues were considered as a control. In the second experiment, vitrified/warmed fragments of four pairs of ovaries were cultured with the best concentration of FSH established (cryopreserved and cultured group). Non-cryopreserved (fresh control group) and cryopreserved but non-cultured (non-cultured group) tissues were used as controls. For both experiments, preantral follicles were evaluated for survival and development using morphological and viability analysis by trypan blue staining. After culturing fresh samples, FSH50 showed a higher percentage of morphologically normal follicles when compared to FSH10 (P < 0.05). This same response was observed for primordial follicles. Regardless of the concentrations of FSH used during in vitro culture, no difference was observed regarding the percentage of viable follicles and diameters (P > 0.05). Thus, the FSH50 group was used for second experiment, in which 76.2 ± 7.2% normal preantral follicles previously vitrified was found after 6-day culture, also presenting the highest values (P < 0.05) for morphology of primordial follicles (95.2 ± 4.7%). Nevertheless, in vitro culture did not affect the viability and diameter of preantral follicles of cryopreserved tissues (P > 0.05). In conclusion, TCM199 supplemented with 50 ng/mL FSH was efficient in maintaining the in vitro survival of fresh and vitrified red-rumped agouti preantral follicles. This was the first study related to the in vitro culture of ovarian preantral follicles in this species, aiming to contribute to its conservation.

BACKGROUND Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus that has been causing large outbreaks in the Americas since 2014. In Brazil, Asian-Caribbean (AC) and East-Central-South-African (ECSA) genotypes have been detected and lead to large outbreaks in several Brazilian states. In Rio Grande do Sul (RS), the southernmost state of Brazil, the first cases were reported in 2016. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS We employed genome sequencing and epidemiological investigation to characterise the Chikungunya fever (CHIKF) burden in RS between 2017-2021. FINDINGS We detected an increasing CHIKF burden linked to travel associated introductions and communitary transmission of distinct lineages of the ECSA genotype during this period. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Until 2020, CHIKV introductions were most travel associated and transmission was limited. Then, in 2021, the largest outbreak occurred in the state associated with the introduction of a new ECSA lineage. CHIKV outbreaks are likely to occur in the near future due to abundant competent vectors and a susceptible population, exposing more than 11 million inhabitants to an increasing infection risk.

ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to produce and characterize biochar from sugarcane straw, as well as to investigate possible phytotoxic effects on the germination of cotton, maize, and soybean. To this end, the biochar was produced in a double-drum oven and characterized by different techniques. The germination trials were conducted in vitro, with biochar doses varying between 0 and 100 t/ha. The biochar was obtained with a yield of 40%, pH equal to 9.10, electrical conductivity of 2.22 dS/m and specific surface area of 20.3 m2/g. The elemental analysis showed H/C and O/C atomic ratios of 0.41 and 0.21, respectively. The FTIR showed the presence of C=C groups, while SEM/EDS showed a honeycomb porous structure and nutrients such as Mg, K and Ca. The germination test classified the biochar as a phytonutrient for corn and showed no phytotoxicity for soybeans. On the other hand, for cotton, the highest doses (50 and 100 t/ha) caused phytotoxicity. The results of this work meet the global demands for green techniques. Biochar made from sugarcane straw is a promising technology to improve the infertility of poor soils and manage carbon sequestration.

RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi produzir e caracterizar o biocarvão a partir da palha de cana-de-açúcar, bem como investigar possíveis efeitos fitotóxicos às germinações de algodão, milho e soja. Para tanto, o biocarvão foi produzido em forno de duplo tambor e caracterizado por diferentes técnicas. Os ensaios de germinação foram conduzidos in vitro, com doses de biocarvão variando entre 0 e 100 t/ha. O biocarvão foi obtido com rendimento de 40%, pH igual a 9,10, condutividade elétrica de 2,22 dS/m e área superficial específica de 20,3 m2/g. A análise elementar mostrou razões atômicas H/C e O/C de 0,41 e 0,21, respectivamente. A FTIR mostrou a presença de grupos C=C, enquanto a MEV/EDS mostrou estrutura porosa tipo favo de mel e nutrientes, como o Mg, K e Ca. O ensaio de germinação classificou o biocarvão como fitoestimulante para o milho e mostrou ausência de fitotoxicidade para soja. Por outro lado, para o algodão, as doses mais elevadas (50 e 100 t/ha) causaram fitotoxicidade. Os resultados deste trabalho vêm ao encontro das demandas globais por técnicas verdes. O biocarvão feito da palha de cana-de-açúcar é uma tecnologia promissora para melhorar a infertilidade de solos pobres e gerir o sequestro de carbono.

Resumo A pandemia de covid-19 agravou a fome e a insegurança alimentar em todo o mundo, causando mobilização dos movimentos sociais para amenizar esse cenário. Este artigo objetiva caracterizar e analisar as ações e a contribuição do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra para a promoção da Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional durante a pandemia no Brasil. A pesquisa documental foi a base para as informações do escopo do estudo. A coleta de dados foi realizada pela busca de documentos por meio de ferramentas de busca online. Os documentos encontrados foram verificados acerca de sua veracidade e examinados pela análise de conteúdo de Bardin. Dentre eles, a maioria são notícias. As ações realizadas foram de doações e vendas de alimentos e doações de sementes para plantio. Os alimentos doados advinham da produção orgânica e agroecológica do movimento. Tais ações ocorreram em diversas regiões do país e foram ao encontro da melhoria do acesso e disponibilidade de alimentos às populações vulnerabilizadas, o que promoveu o acesso a alimentos de qualidade e seguros. Isso demonstra que as ações realizadas pelo movimento contribuíram para o enfrentamento da fome durante a pandemia e destacam a importância dos movimentos do campo na promoção da Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic worsened hunger and food insecurity around the world, leading to mobilization of social movements to alleviate this scenario. This documentary study characterizes and analyzes the Landless Workers’ Movement’s actions and contributions to promote food security during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Data was collected through online search tools. The documents found were verified for their veracity and analyzed using Bardin’s content analysis. Of the documents found, most were news. Donations and sale of food from the movement’s organic and agroecological production, and seed donations for planting were the actions carried out. These actions took place in different regions of the country and sought to improve food access and availability to vulnerable populations, thus promoting access to quality and safe food. This demonstrates that the actions carried out by the movement contributed to combating hunger during the pandemic, highlighting the importance of rural movements in promoting food security.

RESUMO Objetivo: identificar os fatores relacionados aos sintomas depressivos em pessoas idosas com diabetes mellitus. Método: pesquisa transversal, com abordagem quantitativa e realizada com a participação de 144 pessoas idosas cadastradas em 72 Unidades Saúde da Família do município de João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil. Os dados foram coletados no período de setembro a dezembro de 2019, utilizando instrumento para a obtenção de dados referentes ao perfil sociodemográfico e clínico e a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica mediante estatística descritiva e inferencial. Resultados: observou-se que 75,7% dos idosos com diabetes não tinham sintomas depressivos. Foi evidenciada associação significativa entre a sintomatologia depressiva e as variáveis renda pessoal (p=0,044), tipo de renda (p=0,020), dislipidemia (p=0,038), complicações do diabetes (p=0,045) e a retinopatia (p=0,033). Conclusão: os fatores sociais, de saúde e relacionados ao diabetes podem influenciar negativamente a condição psíquica da pessoa idosa e favorecer o surgimento de sintomas depressivos.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the factors related to depressive symptoms in older adults with Diabetes Mellitus. Method: a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach conducted with 144 older adults registered in 72 Family Health units from the municipality of João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil. The data were collected from September to December 2019, using an instrument to obtain information referring to the sociodemographic and clinical profile and the Geriatric Depression Scale by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: it was observed that 75.7% of the diabetic older adults did not present depressive symptoms. There was a significant association between depressive symptoms and the following variables: personal income (p=0.044), type of income (p=0.020), dyslipidemia (p=0.038), diabetes complications (p=0.045) and retinopathy (p=0.033). Conclusion: the social and health factors, as well as those related to diabetes, can exert negative influences on older adults’ psychological state and favor the onset of depressive symptoms.

Método: investigación transversal, de enfoque cuantitativo y realizada con la participación de 144 adultos mayores registrados en 72 unidades de Salud de la Familia del municipio de João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brasil. Los datos se recolectaron entre septiembre y diciembre de 2019, utilizando un instrumento para obtener datos sobre el perfil sociodemográfico y clínico y la Escala de Depresión Geriátrica mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados: se observó que el 75,7% de los ancianos que padecían diabetes no tenían síntomas depresivos. Se registró una asociación significativa entre los síntomas depresivos y las variables ingresos personales (p=0,044), tipo de ingresos (p=0,020), dislipidemia (p=0,038), complicaciones de la diabetes (p=0,045) y retinopatía (p=0,033). Conclusión: los factores sociales, de salud y relacionados con la diabetes pueden ejercer influencias negativas sobre el estado psicológico de los ancianos y favorece la aparición de síntomas depresivos.

RESUMO: O fenômeno denominado infodemia refere-se ao aumento do volume informacional sobre um tema em específico, que se multiplica rapidamente em um curto período de tempo, e tem-se destacado frente ao contexto da crise sanitária desencadeada pela pandemia de COVID-19. O excesso de informações pode suscitar sentimentos de medo, ansiedade, estresse e outras condições de sofrimento mental. O estudo tem como objetivo descrever o perfil de exposição a informações sobre COVID-19 e suas repercussões na saúde mental de idosos brasileiros. Trata-se de um estudo transversal realizado com 1924 idosos brasileiros. Coletaram-se dados por meio de web-based survey enviada aos idosos por redes sociais e e-mail, no período de julho a outubro de 2020. Os resultados da análise descritiva dos dados demonstram que a maioria dos idosos apresentou idade entre 60 e 69 anos (69,02%), é do sexo feminino (71,26%), casados (53,79%) e de cor branca (75,57%). Cerca de 21,67% (n = 417) concluíram a graduação, 19,75% (380) concluíram especialização e 16,63% (320) concluíram mestrado ou doutorado. Foram reportados como fontes frequentes de exposição às notícias ou informações sobre a COVID-19, a televisão 862 (44,80%) e as redes sociais 651 (33,84%). Os participantes assinalaram que a televisão (46,47%; n = 872), as redes sociais (30,81%; n = 575) e o rádio (14,48%; 251) os afetavam psicológica e/ou fisicamente. Receber notícias falsas sobre a COVID-19 pela televisão (n = 482; 19,8%) e pelas redes sociais (n = 415; 21,5%) repercutiu, principalmente, estresse e medo. As informações disseminadas contribuem para conscientização, mas, também, afetam física e/ou psicologicamente muitos idosos, principalmente gerando medo e estresse.

ABSTRACT The phenomenon called infodemia refers to the increase in the volume of information on a specific topic, which multiplies rapidly in a short period of time, and has stood out in the context of the health crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Too much information can trigger feelings of fear, anxiety, stress, and other conditions of mental distress. The study aims to describe the profile of exposure to information about COVID-19 and its repercussions on the mental health of elderly Brazilians. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with 1924 elderly Brazilians. Data were collected through a web-based survey sent to the elderly via social networks and email, from July to October 2020. The results of the descriptive analysis of the data show that most of the elderly were aged between 60 and 69 years (69.02%), female (71.26%), married (53.79%) and white (75.57%). About 21.67% (n = 417) concluded their graduation, 19.75% (380) concluded their specialization and 16.63% (320) concluded their master's or doctoral degrees. Television 862 (44.80%) and social networks 651 (33.84%) were reported as frequent sources of exposure to news or information about COVID-19. Participants indicated that television (46.47%; n = 872), social networks (30.81%; n = 575) and radio (14.48%; 251) affected them psychologically and/or physically. Receiving fake news about COVID-19 on television (n = 482; 19.8%) and on social media (n = 415; 21.5%) mainly resulted in stress and fear. The disseminated information contributes to awareness, but also affects physically and/or psychologically many elderly people, mainly generating fear and stress.

Abstract Background Cardiac surgery causes pathophysiological changes that favor the occurrence of pulmonary and functional complications. Objective To investigate the effects of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) with an electronic device on patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Methods A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 30 adult patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery. A control group (CG) received conventional physical therapy care, and an intervention group (IG) received IMT using the POWERbreathe K5® electronic device. Two daily sessions of physical therapy were performed at the intensive care unit and one daily session at the ward until the sixth postoperative day. The following variables were measured preoperatively and on the sixth postoperative day, in both groups: inspiratory muscle strength, dynamic inspiratory muscle strength, and peak inspiratory flow. Data distribution was evaluated by the Shapiro-Wilk test. Analysis of variance was used, and the results were considered statistically significant when p < 0.05. Results Maximal inspiratory pressure (71.7 ± 17.1 cmH2O vs 63.3 ± 21.3 cmH2O; p = 0.11], S-index (52.61 ± 18.61 vs 51.08 ± 20.71), and peak inspiratory flow [(2.94 ± 1.09 vs 2.79 ± 1.26)] were maintained in the IG but had a significant reduction in the CG. Conclusion IMT performed with an electronic device was effective at maintaining inspiratory muscle strength, dynamic inspiratory muscle strength, and peak inspiratory flow when compared to conventional physical therapy.
