ABSTRACT In the Brazilian planted forest sector, most of the species used are from the genus Eucalyptus. Even though Southern Brazil has a suitable climate for species of the genus Pinus, the planting of frost-resistant Eucalyptus species has been increasing annually. The objective of this study was to evaluate the basic density, fiber dimensions, and chemical composition of Eucalyptus benthamii, Eucalyptus dunnii, Eucalyptus saligna, and Eucalyptus cloeziana woods. The trees used were from a six-year-old experimental plantation located in Canoinhas, state of Santa Catarina. For each species, three trees were selected, and discs were removed from each tree at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the commercial stem height. To evaluate the quality of the wood, the basic wood density, fiber dimensions, and chemical composition of the wood were determined by comparing the values between species and between the heights in the stem. The highest basic density was that of the wood of E. cloeziana; this species also had the greatest length and width of fibers. E. dunnii had the lowest levels of lignin and the highest levels of holocellulose. The highest lignin content was found in the wood of E. benthamii, E. saligna, and E. cloeziana. The relationship between wood properties and stem height was not relevant. The results highlight the tendency for higher extractives to be found at taller heights (100%), and holocellulose and lignin content are similar at all heights.

RESUMO No setor de florestas plantadas brasileiro, a maioria das espécies utilizadas são do gênero Eucalyptus. Embora o Sul do Brasil tenha clima propicio para espécies do gênero Pinus, o plantio de espécies de Eucalyptus resistentes à geada vem aumentando anualmente. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a densidade básica, as dimensões das fibras e a composição química da madeira de Eucalyptus benthamii, Eucalyptus dunnii, Eucalyptus saligna e Eucalyptus cloeziana. As árvores utilizadas foram provenientes de um plantio experimental de seis anos localizado em Canoinhas, estado de Santa Catarina. Para cada espécie, três árvores foram selecionadas e os discos foram removidos de cada árvore a 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% e 100% da altura do caule comercial. Para avaliar a qualidade da madeira, a densidade básica, as dimensões das fibras e a composição química foram determinadas comparando-se os valores entre as espécies e entre as alturas no fuste. A maior densidade básica foi a da madeira de E. cloeziana; esta espécie também apresentou o maior comprimento e largura das fibras. E. dunnii apresentou os menores teores de lignina e os maiores teores de holocelulose. O maior teor de lignina foi encontrado na madeira de E. benthamii, E. saligna e E. cloeziana. A relação entre as propriedades da madeira e a altura do fuste não foi relevante. Os resultados destacam a tendência de maiores extrativos serem encontrados nas partes mais altas (100%), e os teores de holocelulose e lignina são similares em todas as alturas.

Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the energy quality of wood and charcoal obtained from the stem and root of the genus Eucalyptus spp. From the wood, the physical, chemical and energetic properties were evaluated. For the charcoal produced in ovens of the carbonization furnaces model in the industry and produced in a muffle furnace, the physical, chemical and energetic properties were evaluated. Based on the analysis of technological properties, wood from the root has higher basic density (731.45 kg m-3) and lignin content (26.44%), however, the fixed carbon content and higher calorific value of the root (17.54% and 4547.75 kcal kg-1) were lower than for the stem wood (21.36% and 4730.82 kcal kg-1). It is recommended to use the wood from the root, both for direct burning and for the production of charcoal. The charcoal obtained in the industry, compared to that produced in muffle, presented higher energy quality.

ABSTRACT Optimizing resources is essential for the excellence and competitiveness of a forestry company. In this context, this study evaluated the productivity and quality of eucalyptus wood processing for energy purposes. The study was conducted in a forestry company in Paraná State in stands of Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus saligna clones named stands 1 and 2, respectively, with an age of 7 years old. The trees were processed with a harvester and included the following four stem diameter limits for pulp production and co-products for energy purposes: 8, 10, 12, and 14 cm; and pulp logs with a length of 7.20 m. The technical analysis of the operation determined the average operating cycle times, utilization rate and machine productivity. In addition, a quality analysis determined the stem diameter limits for production of the co-products and the lengths of the pulp logs; the limit diameters were compared by the Tukey’s test, and the stands by the Student’s t-test (α ≤ 0.05). The results showed that the processing time decreased with increasing limit diameter, with the highest values being in stand 1 due to the higher number of branches and forked trees. The processing logs at 10 cm limit diameter provided higher harvester productivity, with 59.5 m³ PMH-¹ and 62.2 m³ PMH-¹ in stands 1 and 2, respectively. Furthermore, the best quality in the limit diameter measurement was obtained at 10 cm. Thus, the effects of forest stand and limit diameters on processing and operation quality were evident.

RESUMO A otimização dos recursos é essencial para a excelência e competitividade de uma empresa florestal. Neste contexto, o estudo avaliou a produtividade e a qualidade do processamento da madeira de eucalipto para fins energéticos. Para isso, o estudo foi conduzido em uma empresa florestal no estado do Paraná, em povoamentos de clones de Eucalyptus urophylla × Eucalyptus grandis e Eucalyptus saligna denominados povoamentos 1 e 2, respectivamente, com idade de 7 anos. O processamento das árvores com o harvester incluiu quatro limites de diâmetros do fuste para a produção de celulose e coprodutos para fins energéticos, sendo: 8, 10, 12, e 14 cm; e, toras para celulose com um comprimento de 7,20 m. A análise técnica da operação determinou os tempos médios do ciclo operacional, a taxa de utilização e a produtividade da máquina. Ao passo que, a análise de qualidade determinou os diâmetros limite do fuste para a produção dos coprodutos e os comprimentos das toras para celulose, sendo que, os diâmetros limite foram comparados pelo teste de Tukey e os povoamentos pelo teste t de Student (α ≤ 0,05). Os resultados mostraram que o tempo de processamento diminuiu com o aumento do diâmetro limite, com os valores mais elevados no povoamento 1, devido ao maior número de galhos e de árvores bifurcadas. As toras processadas no diâmetro limite de 10 cm proporcionaram uma maior produtividade do harvester, com 59,5 m³ PMH-¹ e 62,2 m³ PMH-¹ nos povoamentos 1 e 2, respectivamente. Adicionalmente, a melhor qualidade na medição do diâmetro da ponta foi obtida a 10 cm. Portanto, os efeitos dos povoamentos florestais e dos diâmetros limite na qualidade de processamento e operação eram evidentes.

ABSTRACT One of the main difficulties in choosing forest biomass for energetic purposes is the evaluation of its quality. Thus, the objective of this research was to propose a classification of the biomass of black wattle stands based on the variables gross calorific value, energy density, ash content and biomass stock. For this purpose, commercial stands of the species were sampled in three growing regions (Cristal, Encruzilhada do Sul and Piratini) in Rio Grande do Sul, with 1 to 10 years old classified into age groups I, II, III and IV. In these stands, 670 trees were felled, their biometric and energetic variables were measured. From these locations, meteorological and edaphic variables were also collected. Cluster analysis was used to separate the predictor variables into three quality classes called low, medium and high. Discriminant analysis revealed two functions capable of classifying new observations into quality classes. The discriminant functions were able to correctly classify more than 51% of the trees based on gross calorific value, 65% based on energy density, 89% on ash content and 85% on energy stock. The biometric, energetic and meteorological variables contributed to the discrimination of the quality classes.

RESUMO Uma das principais dificuldades na escolha de uma biomassa florestal para fins energéticos está na avaliação de sua qualidade. Desse modo, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi propor uma classificação da biomassa de povoamentos de acácia negra com base nas variáveis poder calorífico superior, densidade energética, teor de cinzas e estoque de biomassa. Para esse fim, povoamentos comerciais da espécie foram amostrados em três regiões de cultivo (Cristal, Encruzilhada do Sul e Piratini) no Rio Grande do Sul, com 1 a 10 anos classificados em grupos de idade I, II, III e IV. Nesses povoamentos, foram abatidas 670 árvores, as quais tiveram suas variáveis biométricas e energéticas mensuradas. Desses locais, também foram coletadas variáveis meteorológicas e edáficas. A análise de agrupamento (cluster) foi utilizada para separar as variáveis preditoras em três classes de qualidade denominadas baixa, média e alta. A análise discriminante revelou duas funções capazes de classificar novas observações nas classes de qualidade. As funções discriminantes conseguiram classificar corretamente mais de 51% das árvores com base no poder calorífico superior, 65% com base na densidade energética, 89% no teor de cinzas e 85% no estoque energético. As variáveis biométricas, energéticas e meteorológicas contribuíram para a discriminação das classes de qualidade.

ABSTRACT Background: In the study of biologically-based materials, nanocelluloses have been showing great prominence and positioned themselves as promising alternatives for the production of different industrialized materials. This polymer has received significant attention recently because it is produced from renewable sources and has unique properties offered by its organic nature and semi-crystalline structure. This work aimed to study the structural properties of suspensions and films by increasing MCC concentration in the form of powder with variations of 5 % (m/m) from 5 % to 30 %. Results: As expected, incorporating MCC increased the Segal index. The morphological analysis showed an increase in the diameters of the structures (NFC / MCC) in the suspensions when the presence of MCC was more significant, and films with cluster formations were observed. The films showed air permeability. Due to the MCC increase, the surface charge had results close to electrostatically stabilized nanosuspensions. An increase in the resistance to thermal degradation of the films was also observed Conclusion: NFC has promising properties for different applications; it provides a film with a stable structure and is resistant to oxygen and tensile stresses. In addition, MCC has excellent potential due to its high crystallinity, structural characteristics, and nature. The increase of the MCC content altered the properties of the suspensions and films produced with NFC, forming a cohesive and resistant film, and influencing the performance of the different properties of the materials evaluated in this study, like air permeability, suspension stability, and thermal resistance.

ABSTRACT Residual biomass from grains has potential as an energetic source. Biomass composition determines this potential and is related to plant nutrition, which may vary according to soil fertility. The aim of this 23-year field study was to evaluate changes in chemical attributes of a Brazilian Oxisol and in the energetic potential of oat (Avena sativa L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr) residual biomasses provided by tillage systems and fertilizer rates. The trial was performed since 1989, assessing soil chemical attributes in no-tillage (NT), conventional (CT), minimum (MT) and no-tillage plus chisel plough (NT+CP), with two fertilizer rates (normal and reduced, since 1994). Oat and soybean (2012/2013) residual biomasses were collected and analyzed by its elemental composition, higher heating value (HHV) and theoretical potential for electricity production. The NT system presented higher P-resin availability; NT and NT+CP provided higher OM and total P content on soil surface. Without appropriate amounts of K and P fertilizer, P-resin and P total contents diminished mainly in 0-0.1 m depth, while exchangeable, non-exchangeable and total K+ fractions were mined even in deeper layers (0-0.3 m). The better general fertility conditions were achieved by conservative tillage systems, with normal fertilizer rate. Soil fertility levels changed chemical composition of both biomasses but had no effect on biomass HHV. Considering a system with oat and soybean grain production plus residual biomasses for energetic exploitation, it could be possible to generate 2,941 GWh·year–1, while still achieving 70% residue coverage under no-tillage maintenance.

RESUMO Esse artigo desenvolve e analisa uma taxonomia que particione as Unidades Federativas do Brasil em grupos com características similares, distribuídas sobre os indicadores das quatro dimensões do desenvolvimento sustentável descritas pelo método Dashboard of Sustainability. A metodologia de pesquisa adotada foi a análise multivariada por técnica de interdependência através da análise de conglomerados. Os resultados sugerem que, em média, as unidades federativas contribuem de forma diferenciada para as diferentes dimensões do desenvolvimento sustentável do país e formam grupos distintos. O índice de desenvolvimento sustentável do Brasil tem a dimensão ambiental com forte contribuição do agrupamento formado pelos Estados das regiões Norte e Nordeste. A dimensão social é positivamente influenciada pelo agrupamento composto pelas unidades federativas das regiões Sul e Centro-Oeste. Diferentemente, a dimensão econômica é influenciada positivamente por todas as unidades federativas, contudo, de maneira diferenciada. A dimensão institucional mostrou-se influenciada principalmente por Ceará e Bahia (região Nordeste), todos os estados do Sul e Sudeste e Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso e Mato Grosso do Sul (região Centro-Oeste), todos componentes de um único agrupamento.

ABSTRACT This paper develops and analyzes a taxonomy that divides the Federative Units of Brazil into groups with similar characteristics, distributed over the indicators of the four dimensions of sustainable development described by the Dashboard of Sustainability method. The research methodology adopted was multivariate analysis by interdependence technique through cluster analysis. The results suggest that on average, the federal units contribute differently to the different dimensions of sustainable development of the country and form distinct groups. Brazil’s sustainable development index has an environmental dimension with a strong contribution from the grouping of states in the North and Northeast regions. The social dimension is positively influenced by the grouping composed of the federative units of the South and Midwest regions. In contrast, the economic dimension is positively influenced by all federal units, however, in a different way. The institutional dimension was mainly influenced by Ceará and Bahia (Northeast region), all South and Southeast states and the Federal District, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul (Center-West region), all components of a single grouping.

ABSTRACT The tobacco production requires annually a large volume of firewood used in the cure process of tobacco leaves, representing up to 10% of its production cost. An alternative is the use of agroindustry residues, such as sawdust or pellets. The objective of this study was to analyze the consumption and to characterize forestry biomass used in the tobacco cure process in farmers from Candelária, Southern Brazil, aiming the culture energetic efficiency. Forestry biomass consumption, residues formation after combustion and biomass quality were verified. In terms of available energy, the consumption for each kilogram of dry tobacco was 77.23 MJ for firewood, 61.40 MJ for sawdust and 37.51 MJ for pellets. Pellets presented the best physicochemical characteristics for use as energy, as well as the lowest consumption and the lowest organic fraction present in combustion residues.

ABSTRACT This work aimed to evaluate the elemental composition of different biomass components of the forest species Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth and Ateleia glazioviana Baill, at their first, third and fifth year after planting, aiming at bioenergetic use. The biomass elemental composition was determined by quantifying the levels of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen. The three ages, the four species, and the four compartments differ in relation to the elementary constituents. The use of trees at any age allows for energy use. The fifth year presents the best carbon and hydrogen values, being the best age for using the biomass energy of the different species. A. mearnsii presents the highest carbon values for the leaf and A. glazioviana presents the highest hydrogen values for all compartments. The leaf is the best compartment for energetic use.

RESUMO De modo a determinar o potencial energético dos combustíveis florestais em cultivos de Pinus elliottii, foi analisada a melhor época de coleta deste material em função da umidade, disponibilidade, Poder Calorífico Superior (PCS) e composição química imediata, em parcelas estabelecidas e monitoradas durante um ano na estação experimental de Rio Negro, estado do Paraná. No delineamento experimental, as estações do ano (inverno, verão, primavera e outono) foram consideradas blocos, enquanto as seguintes classes de diâmetro do material combustível os tratamentos: AA, na camada superior; AB, na camada intermediária; AC, na camada inferior, todas com material de diâmetro até 0,7 cm; e a B, com material de 0,71 a 2,5 cm. No campo, foi determinada a massa (base úmida) do material coletado nas subparcelas de 900 cm2 e posteriormente levadas ao laboratório da Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), no qual se procederam as análises referentes à umidade (base seca), Poder Calorífico Superior (PCS) e composição química imediata. Foi recorrido à análise de variância (ANOVA) e ao Teste de Tukey para comparação das épocas (blocos) e das diferentes classes de material combustível (tratamentos). Com baixo teor de umidade e maior quantidade de material disponível, observou-se pelo teste de médias, para todas as classes de material, que o inverno foi a melhor época de coleta. Para a mesma época de coleta foi possível observar pelo PCS e análise da composição química imediata que as médias das classes AA e B foram estatisticamente superiores em relação às demais. A manta apresentou densidade energética considerável (12.275,42.105 kcal.ha-1) para conversão em bioenergia. Pelos resultados do presente estudo observou-se que existe potencial para aproveitamento de resíduos florestais como fonte de energia limpa e renovável.

ABSTRACT In order to determine the potential energy of forest fuels in Pinus elliottii stands, we investigated the best season to collect fuel material considering fuel availability, moisture content, Higher Calorific Value (HCV) and immediate chemical composition, from the plots established and monitored during one year at Rio Negro Research station, Paraná state, Brazil. The year’s seasons (winter, summer, spring and autumn) were considered as experimental blocks while the diameter of the materials (AA, AB and AC) as treatments. These treatments were pre-defined in the following diameter classes: AA, in the upper layer; AB, in the intermediate layer; AC, in the lower layer, all materials up to 0,7 cm; and B, with material of 0.71 to 2.5 cm. The fuel material of all year’s seasons was collected in sub plots of 900 cm2, weighted in the field and taken to the laboratory of the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) to carry out the rest of analyzes including: moisture on the dry basis, fuel availability, Higher Calorific Value (HCV) and immediate chemical composition. Analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test were performed to compare the differences between seasons and material classes. Together with low moisture content and greater fuel availability, the mean test showed that, for all material classes, the winter was the best season to collect forest fuel material of Pinus elliottii stands. The results also showed that, for immediate composition and HCV, the mean class AA and B were statistically superior than the other classes. The fuel loading had a considerable density of energetic (12,275.42.105 kcal. ha-1) for bioenergy conversion and utilization.

RESUMO Esse trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o efeito da idade e do espaçamento de plantio na produção de biomassa das espécies florestais: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth e Ateleia glazioviana Baill. Foram considerados plantios com diferentes espaçamentos: 2,0×1,0 m, 2,0×1,5 m, 3,0×1,0 m e 3,0×1,5 m, nas idades de 1, 3 e 5 anos após o plantio. O trabalho foi instalado em delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados. A determinação da biomassa aérea consistiu na colheita e pesagem das diferentes partes das árvores. Os espaçamentos de plantio influenciam na produção de biomassa das partes das espécies florestais, nas diferentes idades após o plantio. Os espaçamentos mais adensados proporcionam maiores quantidades de biomassa que os menos adensados. As espécies florestais diferenciam-se em relação à produção de biomassa. O Eucalyptus grandis (325,1 t ha-1) apresenta a maior produção, seguido da Acacia mearnsii (239,3 t ha-1), Mimosa scabrella (53,4 t ha-1) e Ateleia glazioviana (32,1 t ha-1). A madeira apresenta a maior participação na biomassa total ao longo do tempo, sendo constatada a crescente proporção percentual ao longo das classes etárias, seguido do galho, folha e casca.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to determine the effect of age and plant spacing on biomass production of four forestry tree species: Acacia mearnsii De Wild, Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, Mimosa scabrella Benth, and Ateleia glazioviana Baill. The following spacings of plants at the ages of 1, 3, and 5 years after planting were considered: 2.0 × 1.0 m, 2.0 × 1.5 m, 3.0 × 1.0 m, and 3.0 × 1.5 m. The study was installed in randomized complete block design. Biomass was determined by weighing different components of the trees after harvesting. Plant spacing affected biomass production of forestry trees at different ages after planting. Dense spacings produced larger quantities of biomass than less dense spacing. The tree species differed in biomass production: Eucalyptus grandis produced the largest quantity (325.1 t ha-1), followed by Acacia mearnsii (239.3 t ha-1), Mimosa scabrella (53.4 t ha-1), and Ateleia glazioviana (32.1 t ha-1). Wood biomass represented the biomass component with the largest production over time, which showed an increasing proportion throughout the age groups, followed branch, leaf, and bark biomass.

RESUMO A disposição dos resíduos sólidos domiciliares (RSD) é um desafio na maior parte dos municípios brasileiros, pois é realizada sem tratamento prévio, trazendo inúmeros impactos. A utilização de incineração com recuperação energética possibilita a redução dos impactos. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o potencial energético dos RSD do município de Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brasil. Para isso, foram coletadas amostras no aterro do município para a realização das análises. A caracterização gravimétrica apresentou valores de 0,28 kg kg-1 para os recicláveis, 0,44 kg kg-1 para a matéria orgânica e 0,28kg kg-1 para os rejeitos. Os conteúdos de carbono fixo variaram de 0,06 a 0,09 kg kg-1, os de materiais voláteis de 0,75 a 0,81 kg kg-1 e os de cinzas de 0,10 a 0,18 kg kg-1. E o poder calorífico superior médio apresentou valor elevado, 19.807 kJ kg-1, se comparado com o de resíduos de outras cidades do mundo.

ABSTRACT Household solid waste (HSW) disposition is a challenge for the majority of the Brazilian cities, most held without pretreatment, which causes impacts. Incineration with recovery energy is an alternative to reduce impacts. In this study we analyzed the energy potential of HSW in the city of Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Brazil. Samples were collected at the municipal landfill for the analysis. Waste gravimetric characterization showed value 0.28 kg kg-1for recyclables, 0.44 kg kg-1for organic matter and 0.28 kg kg-1 for rejects. The fixed carbon content ranged from 0.06 to 0.09 kg kg-1, the volatile materials from 0.75 to 0.81 kg kg-1 and ashes from 0.10 to 0.18 kg kg-1. The average gross calorific value showed high value, 19,807 kJ kg-1, compared to the waste of other cities in the world.

RESUMO A biomassa residual agrícola é uma importante fonte de energia e sua produção e qualidade varia com o manejo das lavouras. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da distribuição de plantas e da adubação nitrogenada sobre o potencial de produção de energia da biomassa do milho cultivado sob sistema de plantio direto. O experimento de campo foi instalado no sudeste do Brasil, com cinco doses de nitrogênio (0, 60, 120, 180 e 240 kg ha-1) e dois espaçamentos entrelinhas (0,4 e 0,8 m). Foram realizadas avaliações de produtividade de grãos, produtividade de biomassa residual e potencial de bioenergia em diferentes partes da planta (grão, colmo + folha, palha da espiga e sabugo). A variação no espaçamento não alterou o rendimento de grãos. A produtividade de folhas + palha de espiga foi maior em 0,8 m do que 0,4 m de espaçamento. A aplicação de nitrogênio resultou no aumento do rendimento de grãos e da produtividade de biomassa. O nitrogênio influência o potencial da bioenergia ao aumentar a biomassa e o poder calorífico. Com a dose de 226 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio, taxa máxima para o rendimento de grãos, e considerando apenas o uso de palha da espiga e sabugo, é possível gerar 2712 kWh ha-1 de bioenergia.

ABSTRACT Agricultural residual biomass is an important source of energy, and its production and quality vary according to the crop management. This study aimed to assess the effects of plant distribution and nitrogen fertilization on the energy production potential of the biomass of maize cultivated under no tillage. The field experiment was installed in southeast Brazil using five nitrogen rates (0, 60, 120, 180, and 240 kg ha-1) and two inter-row spacings (0.4 and 0.8 m). Grain yield, residual biomass productivity, and bioenergy potential in different parts of the plant (grain, stalk+leaf, husk, and cob) were assessed. No change in grain yield was observed using narrow row spacing. Stalk+leaf and husk productivity was higher using 0.8 m than using 0.4 m of inter-row spacing. Nitrogen application resulted in increased grain yield and biomass productivity. Nitrogen influences the bioenergy potential by increasing the biomass and calorific value. Application of the maximum nitrogen fertilization rate is recommended for grain yield considering the use of only the husk and cob can generate 2712 kWh ha-1 of bioenergy.

RESUMO: A utilização da madeira para fins energéticos é elevada no país, motivada principalmente pela diversidade de espécies que apresentam potencialidade de geração de energia. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o efeito da idade e do espaçamento de plantio nas propriedades energéticas em diferentes compartimentos da biomassa: madeira, casca e galho da espécie Ateleia glazioviana Baill, distribuída em diferentes espaçamentos: 2,0x1,0m, 2,0x1,5m, 3,0x1,0m e 3,0x1,5m, no 1º, 3º e 5º ano após o plantio. O presente trabalho foi realizado em um experimento instalado em delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados em três repetições. Foram determinadas as variáveis biomassa (BIO), poder calorífico superior (PCS), massa específica básica (ME), produtividade energética (PE), densidade energética (DE), teor de carbono fixo (CF), teor de material volátil (MV) e teor de cinzas (CZ). Concluiu-se que as diferentes idades das árvores influenciam significativamente todas as variáveis analisadas, proporcionando uma distribuição crescente da BIO, PE, CF, ME e DE, sem tendência a estabilização ao longo do tempo. Os quatro espaçamentos de plantio induzem a diferentes produções de BIO e PE, com uma tendência de redução dos seus valores com o aumento do espaçamento, em todos os períodos avaliados. Os quatro compartimentos das árvores induzem a um efeito significativo das variáveis BIO, PE, PCS, CF, MV e CZ.

ABSTRACT: The use of wood for energy purposes is common in Brazil, motivated mainly by the diversity of species that present a potential for energy production. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of tree age and spacing on the energy properties of different components of the biomass: wood, bark, and branch of the species Ateleia glazioviana Baill, distributed at different spacings: 2.0 × 1.0m, 2.0 × 1.5m, 3.0 × 1.0m, and 3.0 × 1.5m in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th year after the planting. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The following variables were determined: biomass (BIO), gross calorific power (GCV), basic density (BD), energy productivity (EP), energy density (ED), fixed carbon content (FCC), volatile material content (VMC), and ash content (AC). Different tree ages significantly affected all analyzed variables, increasing the distribution of BIO, EP, AC, BD, and ED with no tendency to stabilize over time. The four tree spacings induced different levels of BIO and EP, with a trend toward lower values with increasing tree spacing for all assessed periods. The four components of the trees had a significant effect on the variables BIO, EP, GCV, FCC, VMC, and AC.

RESUMO Esse trabalho teve como objetivo determinar o efeito da idade e do espaçamento de plantio nas propriedades energéticas de diferentes compartimentos da biomassa de Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, distribuída em diferentes espaçamentos: 2,0x1,0 m, 2,0x1,5 m, 3,0x1,0 m e 3,0x1,5 m, no 1º, 3º e 5º ano após o plantio. O presente trabalho foi realizado em um experimento instalado em delineamento experimental de blocos completos casualizados em três repetições. Foram determinadas as variáveis biomassa (BIO), poder calorífico superior (PCS), massa específica básica (ME), produtividade energética (PE), densidade energética (DE), teor de carbono fixo (CF), teor de material volátil (MV) e teor de cinzas (CZ). As idades proporcionam um efeito em todas as variáveis analisadas, sendo que no 5º ano após o plantio, são verificados os maiores valores de BIO, PE, ME, DE e CF. Os espaçamentos de plantio induzem a diferentes produções de BIO e PE, com uma tendência de redução dos valores com o aumento do espaçamento de plantio, em todos os períodos avaliados. Os compartimentos das árvores influenciam nas variáveis BIO, PCS, PE, CF, MV e CZ. Do ponto de vista energético, quanto maior a idade e menor o espaçamento de plantio, melhores são as propriedades energéticas da biomassa.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to determine the effect of planting age and spacing on energy properties of different compartments of the biomass of Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill ex Maiden, disseminated in different spacings: 2.0 x 1.0 m, 2.0 x 1.5 m, 3.0 x 1.0 m e 3.0 x 1.5 m, in the 1st, 3rd and 5th year after the planting. The present study was carried out as an experiment installed in an experimental design of randomized complete blocks in three replications. Variables determined were Biomass (BIO), Gross Calorific Value (GCV), Basic Density (BD), Energy Productivity (EP), Energy Density (ED), Fixed Carbon Content (FCC), Volatile Material Content (VMC), and Ash Content (AC). Ages have an effect on all studied variables, and in the 5th year after planting, the largest BIO, EP, BD, ED and FCC values are checked. The planting spacings induce different productions of BIO and EP, with a trend towards lower values with increasing planting spacing in all assessed periods. The compartments of trees influence BIO, GCV, FCC, VMC and AC variables. Regarding to energy, the higher the age and lower the planting spacing, the better the energy properties of biomass.
