BACKGROUND Erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL) is an acute and systemic inflammatory reaction of leprosy characterised by painful nodules and involvement of various organs. Thalidomide is an immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory drug currently used to treat this condition. Cereblon (CRBN) protein is the primary target of thalidomide, and it has been pointed out as necessary for the efficacy of this drug in others therapeutics settings. OBJECTIVES In this study, we aimed to evaluate the influence of CRBN gene variants on the dose of thalidomide as well as its adverse effects during treatment of ENL. METHODS A total of 103 ENL patients in treatment with thalidomide were included in this study. DNA samples were obtained from saliva and molecular analysis of CRBN gene were performed to investigate the variants rs1620675, rs1672770 and rs4183. Different genotypes of CRBN variants were evaluated in relation to their influence on the dose of thalidomide and on the occurrence of adverse effects. FINDINGS No association was found between CRBN variants and thalidomide dose variation. However, the genotypes of rs1672770 showed association with gastrointestinal effects (p = 0.040). Moreover, the haplotype DEL/C/T (rs4183/rs1672770/rs1620675) was also associated with gastrointestinal adverse effects (p = 0.015). MAIN CONCLUSIONS Our results show that CRBN variants affect the treatment of ENH with thalidomide, especially on the adverse effects related to the drug.

Resumo Introdução A compra institucional para a alimentação escolar é uma oportunidade de incentivo a novas cadeias de abastecimento, sobretudo em nível local. Objetivo Avaliar a gestão municipal do Programa Nacional de Alimentação Escolar (PNAE) relacionada ao fomento e aquisição de alimentos da agricultura familiar. Método Foi realizado levantamento bibliográfico de estudos avaliativos no âmbito do PNAE para seleção dos indicadores e medidas pertinentes ao objeto e desenvolvido um modelo avaliativo. O modelo avaliativo foi pactuado após submissão a oficinas de consenso. Foi elaborado um questionário e enviado por meio eletrônico a 18 municípios de Santa Catarina. A amostra foi definida de forma intencional, e os municípios selecionados por meio de sorteio. Para avaliar as ações da gestão municipal do PNAE destinadas ao fomento e aquisição de alimentos da agricultura familiar, foram utilizados 5 indicadores, 9 medidas e suas respectivas questões. Resultados A avaliação dos municípios foi predominantemente “regular” (88%; n=14). Conclusão A avaliação apontou fragilidades da gestão municipal em relação ao desconhecimento da legislação e não aplicabilidade dos critérios previstos em normativa, especialmente quanto ao Planejamento de Cardápios, realização de Chamada Pública e seleção dos Projetos de Venda.

Abstract Background The institutional purchase for school feeding is an opportunity to encourage new supply chains, especially at the local level. Objective To evaluate the municipal management of the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) related to the promotion and acquisition of food from family agriculture. Method A bibliographic survey of evaluative studies was carried out within the scope of the PNAE to select indicators and measures pertinent to the object and develop an evaluation model. The evaluative model was agreed after submission to consensus workshops. A questionnaire was developed and sent electronically to 18 municipalities of Santa Catarina. The sample was intentionally defined and the municipalities selected by lot. In order to evaluate the actions of municipal management of the PNAE for the promotion and acquisition of food from family agriculture, five indicators, 9 measures and their respective issues were used. Results The evaluation of municipalities was predominantly “regular” (88%, n = 14). Conclusion The evaluation pointed to fragilities of municipal management in relation to the lack of knowledge of the legislation and non-applicability of the criteria set forth in regulations, especially regarding menu planning, public call and selection of sales projects.

ABSTRACT Lavandula dentata, popularly known as lavender, is commonly used in traditional medicine for the treatment of digestive and inflammatory disorders. The objective of this study was to analyzed the chemical oil composition, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the essential oil and anatomical markers of the leaf and stem of L. dentata cultivated in South Brazil. Essential oil showed an antioxidant activity similar to rutin and gallic acid when analyzed by phosphomolybdenum method. However, by the free radical DPPH and ABTS methods, it showed a slight potential antioxidant. Essential oil presented 1,8-cineol (63%) as major component, antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria strains and Candida albicans, by broth microdilution. The anatomical profile provided the following main microscopic markers: hypostomatic leaves; diacytic stomata, thin and striate cuticle; multicellular and branched non-glandular trichomes; capitate glandular trichomes; peltate glandular trichomes; dorsiventral mesophyll; flat-convex shape midrib, truncated on the abaxial side; one collateral vascular bundle in the midrib; square stem shape, angular collenchyma alternated with cortical parenchyma; sclerenchymatic fibers well-developed on the four edges.

O maracujá tem sido bastante consumido devido ao seu aroma e acidez acentuados, tendo grande importância também por seus frutos ricos em sais minerais e vitaminas, sobretudo, A e C. É utilizado em uma série de produtos como sorvetes, mousses e principalmente como suco. Porém, o processamento afeta o conteúdo, a atividade e a biodisponibilidade dos componentes bioativos. Investigações dos efeitos do processamento nos constituintes nutricionais nos sucos são escassos. Frequentemente, somente as perdas de vitamina C são avaliadas. Este trabalho objetivou investigar como as etapas do processamento (formulação/homogeneização e tratamento térmico) de suco de maracujá afetam as propriedades químicas e físico-químicas deste produto. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que as características químicas e físico-químicas são pouco afetadas pelo processamento, apesar de ter sido verificada diminuição dos teores de vitamina C, antocianinas e carotenoides, estando este último, mesmo após a etapa de pasteurização, em elevadas quantidades.

Passion fruit is widely consumed due to its pleasant flavour and aroma acidity, and it is considered very important a source of minerals and vitamins. It is used in many products such as ice-cream, mousses and, especially, juices. However, the processing of passion fruit juice may modify the composition and biodisponibility of the bioactive compounds. Investigations of the effects of processing on nutritional components in tropical juices are scarce. Frequently, only losses of vitamin C are evaluated. The objective of this paper is to investigate how some operations of passion fruit juice processing (formulation/homogeneization/thermal treatment) affect this product's chemical and physicochemical characteristics. The results showed that the chemical and physicochemical characteristics are little affected by the processing although a reduction in vitamin C contents and anthocyanin, large quantities of carotenoids was verified even after the pasteurization stage.

A goiaba é um dos frutos tropicais de maior valor nutricional, rico em vitamina C e pró-vitamina A, possuindo uma excelente aceitação para consumo in natura, como também uma vasta aplicação industrial. A vitamina C, os carotenoides, as antocianinas e os compostos fenólicos são considerados substâncias com atividade antioxidante, e seu consumo regular tem ação protetora efetiva contra os processos oxidativos que naturalmente ocorrem no organismo. Este trabalho objetivou estudar a estabilidade da vitamina C, carotenoides totais, antocianinas totais e compostos fenólicos totais do suco tropical de goiaba não adoçado obtido pelos processos de enchimento a quente e asséptico durante 250 dias de armazenamento à temperatura ambiente (28 ± 2 ºC). Os resultados demonstraram que os conteúdos de carotenoides totais e os fenólicos totais não apresentaram variação durante o armazenamento, enquanto que a vitamina C apresentou redução.

The guava is one of the tropical fruits with the highest nutritional value, rich in vitamins C and pro-vitamin A, possessing excellent acceptance of in natura consumption as well as great industrial applicability. Vitamin C, carotenoids, anthocyanins and phenolics are considered compounds with antioxidant activity and the consumption of these substances in the daily diet can produce an effective protective action against the oxidative processes that occur naturally in the organism. This work aimed to study the stability of the vitamin C, carotenoids, anthocyanins and total phenolics of unsweetened guava tropical juice obtained by hot fill and aseptic processes for 250 days of storage at room temperature (28 ± 2 ºC). The results showed that the total carotenoids and total phenolics did not vary during the storage time, while the vitamin C decreased.

Conduziu-se este estudo, com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência da inseminação intra-uterina (IIU) em suínos, considerando as taxas de retorno ao estro, aborto, parto, além do tamanho da leitegada (número de leitões nascidos e nascidos vivos). Na IIU, as fêmeas foram inseminadas nos tempos de 24 e 48 horas após a detecção do estro, utilizando-se as concentrações de 500 milhões, 1 bilhão, 1,5 bilhão e 2 bilhões de espermatozóides, em 20mL de diluente. A passagem do cateter de IIU através da cérvix foi possível em 97,9% das fêmeas. Foi realizado diagnóstico de retorno ao estro a partir do 18º dia e diagnóstico de gestação por ultrassonografia transcutânea entre o 28º e 30º dias após a inseminação. A taxa de retorno ao estro foi de 6,3% na IIU. A taxa de parto na IIU foi de 87,2%, sendo a taxa de parto para a concentração de 500 milhões de 100%. Com relação ao número de leitões nascidos totais e nascidos vivos, não houve diferenças, entre as diferentes concentrações espermáticas (P>0,05). A utilização da concentração de 500 x 10(6) espermatozóides em 20mL de diluente, com inseminação intra-uterina, obteve-se um bom desempenho reprodutivo.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the intrauterine insemination (IUI) in swine, considering the conception rate, farrowing rate, litter size (alive born pigs). For the IUI, the females had been insemination at 24 and 48 hours after the estrus detection, and the inseminating doses of 500 million, 1 billion, 1.5 billion and 2 billion spermatozoa in 20 mL extender had been used. The procedure of catheter insertion through the cervical canal was successfully performed in 97.9% of the females. The conception rate was 6.3% in the IUI. The farrowing rate in IUI was 87.2% but the farrowing rate was 100% for the sperm concentration of 500 million. Regarding the number of born pigs and alive born pigs observed in females inseminated with IUI, no significant difference was observed (p > 0.05). The concentration of 500 x 10(6) spermatozoa in 20 mL extender in the intrauterine insemination resulted in an optimal reproductive performance.

Devido à crescente procura por bebidas à base de frutas tropicais e à expansão do segmento de produtos com valores calóricos reduzidos, este trabalho objetivou avaliar o grau de doçura, sabor, impressão global e a intenção de compra das bebidas de goiaba adoçadas com diferentes agentes adoçantes através de frequência de notas, teste de médias e Mapa de Preferência Interno (MPI). Utilizaram-se polpa de goiaba, água potável e diferentes agentes adoçantes (sacarose, mistura ciclamato/sacarina, aspartame, acesulfame-K, estévia e mistura sacarina/ciclamato sódico/acesulfame-K). A avaliação sensorial foi realizada com 100 provadores não treinados em teste laboratorial através do delineamento de blocos completos balanceados. Objetivando a avaliação das respostas individuais de cada provador, as respostas sensoriais foram avaliadas pela metodologia do MPI, empregando-se a técnica de Análise de Componentes Principais. As bebidas de goiaba adoçadas com sacarose e aspartame apresentaram avaliação sensorial semelhante por parte dos consumidores, apresentando os maiores valores médios no teste de aceitação, enquanto as adoçadas com estévia, com a mistura de três agentes adoçantes e a mistura ciclamato/sacarina apresentaram os valores mais baixos na avaliação sensorial. A utilização do MPI confirmou os resultados obtidos através de frequência de notas e teste de médias.

Due to a constant search for tropical fruit drinks and calorie reduced products, this work aimed to evaluate the degree of sweetness, flavor, overall global impression, and purchase intention of guava drinks sweetened with different sweetening agents through the response rank frequency and average test, and internal preference mapping (IPM). Guava pulp, drinking water, and sweetening agents (sucrose, mixture cyclamate/saccharine, aspartame, acesulfame K, stevia and mixture saccharine/sodium cyclamate/acesulfame K) were used. The sensory evaluation was carried out with 100 untrained tasters in laboratorial tests through the balanced complete block designs. Aiming at the evaluation of the taster's individual responses, the sensorial answers were evaluated through the IPM methodology employing the technique of main component analysis. The guava drinks sweetened with sucrose and aspartame got similar sensorial evaluation by the consumers presenting the highest average values in the acceptance test. Nevertheless, those sweetened with stevia, a mixture of three sweetening agents, and a mixture of cyclamate/saccharine presented the lowest values in the sensory evaluation. The utilization of the IPM confirmed the results obtained using the response rank frequency and average test.

A acerola é uma fruta muito apreciada por seu alto teor de vitamina C, além de ser fonte de carotenóides e antocianinas, sendo industrializada na forma de polpa congelada e processamento de suco. Investigações dos efeitos do processamento nos constituintes nutricionais de sucos tropicais são escassos. Freqüentemente, as perdas de vitamina C são as únicas avaliadas. Este trabalho objetivou determinar o efeito de operações do processamento (formulação/homogeneização e tratamento térmico) de suco de acerola sobre as características químicas e físico-químicas deste produto. Os resultados desta pesquisa indicam pequenas alterações, observando-se somente uma variação significativa para o pH do suco, apesar de ter havido diminuição dos teores de vitamina C e antocianinas, e aumento do conteúdo de carotenóides, no suco processado.

Acerola is a fruit which is much appreciated due to its high vitamin C content. It also has a good source of carotenoids and anthocyanins and is industrialised as frozen pulp and processed as juice. Research on the effects of processing on the nutritional constituent of tropical juices is scarce. Often, only the loss of vitamin C is evaluated. The aim of this work is to determine the effect of some processing operations (formulation/ homogenization and heat treatment) on physical and physical-chemical characteristics of acerola juice. The results of this research indicate small changes in the physical and physical-chemical characteristics, and a significant change in the pH, a decrease in the vitamin C and anthocyanins content and an increase in the carotenoids of the processed juice were observed.
