Resumo O estabelecimento definitivo do Aedes aegypti nas Américas está associado às mudanças ambientais, urbanização desorganizada, ausência de água e saneamento básico e deslocamentos populacionais, definindo, assim, a trajetória da doença. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a distribuição espacial dos casos suspeitos de dengue e a relação com indicadores socioeconômicos no município de São Carlos-SP. Trata-se de estudo ecológico, realizado nesse município, em que foram utilizados dados secundários do Sistema de Informação sobre Agravos de Notificação no período de 2016 a 2017 e do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística do Censo Demográfico de 2010. Os dados foram analisados por meio da Análise de Componentes Principais pelo software Statistica 12.0 e os mapas temáticos foram gerados pelo software Arcgis versão 10.5. Os resultados mostraram elevadas taxas de casos suspeitos de dengue em áreas de ponderação com condições sociais adequadas e taxas reduzidas em áreas de ponderação com iniquidades sociais. Concluiu-se que o perfil de casos suspeitos por dengue na população de São Carlos não está relacionado a baixos indicadores socioeconômicos, uma vez que a dinâmica e a mobilidade populacional relacionadas ao elevado fluxo de universitários podem influenciar no padrão de distribuição espacial da doença.

Abstract The definitive establishment of Aedes aegypti in the Americas is associated with environmental changes, disorganized urbanization, lack of water and basic sanitation and population displacement, thus defining the trajectory of the disease. The aim of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution of the dengue suspected cases and understand its correlation with the socioeconomic indicators in the city of São Carlos (SP). This is an ecological study, carried out at the São Carlos (SP). Secondary data from the Information System on Notifiable Diseases in the period from 2016 to 2017 and from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics of the 2010 Demographic Census were used. The data were analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (ACP) by the software Statistica 12.0 and the thematic maps were generated by the software Arcgis version 10.5. The results showed high rates of suspected dengue cases in areas with adequate social conditions and reduced rates in areas with worst social condition. It was concluded that the outline of suspected dengue cases in the population of São Carlos (SP) is not related to low socioeconomic indicators, once the population dynamics and mobility related to the high flow of university students can influence the pattern of spatial distribution of the disease.

ABSTRACT Objective: To update the recommendations to support decisions regarding the pharmacological treatment of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Brazil. Methods: Experts, including representatives of the Ministry of Health and methodologists, created this guideline. The method used for the rapid development of guidelines was based on the adoption and/or adaptation of existing international guidelines (GRADE ADOLOPMENT) and supported by the e-COVID-19 RecMap platform. The quality of the evidence and the preparation of the recommendations followed the GRADE method. Results: Twenty-one recommendations were generated, including strong recommendations for the use of corticosteroids in patients using supplemental oxygen and conditional recommendations for the use of tocilizumab and baricitinib for patients on supplemental oxygen or on noninvasive ventilation and anticoagulants to prevent thromboembolism. Due to suspension of use authorization, it was not possible to make recommendations regarding the use of casirivimab + imdevimab. Strong recommendations against the use of azithromycin in patients without suspected bacterial infection, hydroxychloroquine, convalescent plasma, colchicine, and lopinavir + ritonavir and conditional recommendations against the use of ivermectin and remdesivir were made. Conclusion: New recommendations for the treatment of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 were generated, such as those for tocilizumab and baricitinib. Corticosteroids and prophylaxis for thromboembolism are still recommended, the latter with conditional recommendation. Several drugs were considered ineffective and should not be used to provide the best treatment according to the principles of evidence-based medicine and to promote resource economy.

RESUMO Objetivo: Atualizar as recomendações para embasar as decisões para o tratamento farmacológico de pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19 no Brasil. Métodos: A elaboração desta diretriz foi feita por especialistas, incluindo representantes do Ministério da Saúde e metodologistas. O método utilizado para o desenvolvimento rápido de diretrizes baseou-se na adoção e/ou adaptação de diretrizes internacionais existentes (GRADE ADOLOPMENT) e contou com o apoio da plataforma e-COVID-19 RecMap. A qualidade das evidências e a elaboração das recomendações seguiram o método GRADE. Resultados: Chegaram-se a 21 recomendações, incluindo recomendações fortes quanto ao uso de corticosteroides em pacientes em uso de oxigênio suplementar e recomendações condicionais para o uso de tocilizumabe e baricitinibe, em pacientes com oxigênio suplementar ou ventilação não invasiva, e de anticoagulantes, para prevenção de tromboembolismo. Devido à suspensão da autorização de uso, não foi possível fazer recomendações para o tratamento com casirivimabe + imdevimabe. Foram feitas recomendações fortes contra o uso de azitromicina em pacientes sem suspeita de infecção bacteriana, hidroxicloroquina, plasma convalescente, colchicina e lopinavir + ritonavir, além de recomendações condicionais contra o uso de ivermectina e rendesivir. Conclusão: Foram criadas novas recomendações para o tratamento de pacientes hospitalizados com COVID-19, como as recomendações de tocilizumabe e baricitinibe. Ainda são recomendados corticosteroides e profilaxia contra tromboembolismo, esta em caráter condicional. Vários medicamentos foram considerados ineficazes e não devem ser usados, no intuito de proporcionar o melhor tratamento segundo os princípios da medicina baseada em evidências e promover a economia de recursos.

SUMMARY: The COVID-19 pandemic caused several changes in the teaching of human anatomy, among them the use of different teaching methodologies based on E-learning. However, studies evaluating electronic tools have not provided clear evidence of effective student learning. Thus, this was the first study to evaluate medical students after completing human anatomy courses in the E- learning modality. We recruited first term (Group A, n=25) and second term (Group B, n=13) medical students. We applied a practical assessment based on 50 human anatomy markingson real anatomical specimens and cadavers, to be completed in Questionnaire 01 (Phase I). After detecting low scores on Questionnaire 01 by both groups, we applied a practical and face-to-face tutoring system for 14 days (Phase II). Afterwards, we re-evaluated both groups by repeating the same scores (Questionnaire 02, Phase III). According to the paired analysis of questionnaires 01 and 02 by Student's T-test, both groups showed significant increase in the final scores obtained in questionnaire 02 (Phase III). The evidence showed that the remote format lecture system weakened the learning and retention process of basic anatomical knowledge by medical students. On the other hand, in-person practical teaching proved to be efficient in the formative process of the students, a fact proven by the significant increase in the scores of the students in the 02 questionnaire, for both groups.

RESUMEN: La pandemia por COVID-19 provocó varios cambios en la enseñanza de la anatomía humana, entre ellos el uso de diferentes metodologías de enseñanza basadas en E-learning. Sin embargo, los estudios que evalúan las herramientas electrónicas no han proporcionado evidencia clara de un aprendizaje efectivo de los estudiantes. Este fue el primer estudio que evaluó a estudiantes de medicina luego de cursar cursos de anatomía humana en la modalidad E-learning. Reclutamos estudiantes de medicina de primer término (Grupo A, n=25) y segundo término (Grupo B, n=13). Se aplicó una evaluación práctica basada en 50 marcas de anatomía humana sobre especímenes anatómicos reales y cadáveres, para ser completado en el Cuestionario 01 (Fase I). Tras detectar puntuaciones bajas en el Cuestionario 01 por parte de ambos grupos, se aplicó un sistema de tutorías prácticas y presenciales durante 14 días (Fase II). Posteriormente, reevaluamos ambos grupos repitiendo las mismas puntuaciones (Cuestionario 02, Fase III). Según el análisis apareado de los cuestionarios 01 y 02 por la prueba T de Student, ambos grupos mostraron aumento significativo en los puntajes finales obtenidos en el cuestionario 02 (Fase III). La evidencia mostró que el sistema de conferencias en formato remoto debilitó el proceso de aprendizaje y retención de conocimientos anatómicos básicos por parte de los estudiantes de medicina. Por otro lado, la docencia práctica presencial demostró ser eficiente en el proceso formativo de los alumnos, hecho que demuestra el aumento significativo de las puntuaciones de los alumnos en el cuestionario 02, para ambos grupos.

The present work aims to present the results of a mapping of academic research on the curriculum and its theoretical conceptualizations. It seeks to identify how curricular integration emerges from these discussions. This is descriptive research, in which bibliometric analyzes were performed using the Bibliometrix package of the R software, extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) database, taking the period from 2002 to 2022 as a time frame. The descriptors “theory” and “curriculum” were used to carry out the analysis, and 115 works were found. In order to carry out the present study, the following information was processed: co-citation networks, most relevant authors, network of co-occurrence of the most used terms, evolution of publications, thematic map and thematic evolution. Based on the results, it was possible to map the main axes of discussions on the subject, the authorship networks, in addition to describing the main concepts addressed. It was found that academic productions related to the theoretical field of curriculum are quite shy and need to be better explored considering their relevance in the educational field. It was also verified that the productions related to curriculum theories are emerging and have a close connection with themes related to knowledge and curriculum policies. As for curricular integration, productions in the area are still treated peripherally in relation to the theoretical field of the curriculum.

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar los resultados de un mapeo de investigaciones académicas sobre el currículo y sus conceptualizaciones teóricas. Se busca identificar cómo la integración curricular emerge de estas discusiones. Se trata de una investigación descriptiva, en la que se realizaron análisis bibliométricos utilizando el paquete Bibliometrix del software R, extraído de la base de datos Web of Science (WoS), tomando como marco temporal el período de 2002 a 2022. Los descriptores “teoría” y “curriculum” para realizar el análisis y se encontraron 115 trabajos. Para la realización del presente estudio se procesó la siguiente información: redes de cocitación, autores más relevantes, red de coocurrencia de los términos más utilizados, evolución de publicaciones, mapa temático y evolución temática. A partir de los resultados, fue posible mapear los principales ejes de discusión sobre el tema, las redes de autoría, además de describir los principales conceptos abordados. Se constató que las producciones académicas relacionadas con el campo teórico del currículo son bastante tímidas y necesitan ser mejor exploradas considerando su relevancia en el campo educativo. También se verificó que las producciones relacionadas con las teorías curriculares son emergentes y tienen una estrecha conexión con temas relacionados con el conocimiento y las políticas curriculares. En cuanto a la integración curricular, las producciones del área aún son tratadas de manera periférica en relación al campo teórico del currículo.

O presente trabalho objetiva apresentar os resultados de um mapeamento das pesquisas acadêmicas sobre o currículo e suas conceitualizações teóricas. Busca identificar de que forma a integração curricular emerge dessas discussões. Trata-se de uma pesquisa de cunho descritivo, em que foram realizadas análises bibliométricas por meio do pacote Bibliometrix do software R, extraídos da base de dados da Web of Science (WoS), tomando como recorte temporal o período de 2002 a 2022. Para a realização das análises foram utilizados os descritores “teoria” e “currículo”, tendo sido encontrados 115 trabalhos. Para a realização do presente estudo, foram tratadas as seguintes informações: redes de cocitações, autores mais relevantes, rede de coocorrência dos termos mais utilizados, evolução das publicações, mapa temático e evolução temática. Com base nos resultados, foi possível mapear os principais eixos de discussões sobre o tema, as redes de autoria, além de descrever as principais concepções abordadas. Verificou-se que as produções acadêmicas relacionadas ao campo teórico do currículo apresentam-se bastante tímidas e carecem ser melhor exploradas considerando sua relevância no campo educacional. Verificou-se, também, que as produções relativas às teorias do currículo são emergentes e possuem estreita ligação com temas relacionados ao conhecimento e às políticas de currículo. Quanto à integração curricular, as produções na área ainda são tratadas de forma periférica em relação ao campo teórico do currículo.

Influence of harvest method on proximate composition, texture profile and protein oxidation of beef from grain-fed Nellore cattle

ABSTRACT. The influence of harvest method on proximate composition, protein oxidation, and texture profile of beef from Nellore cattle were investigated. Longissimus lumborum (LL) muscles were obtained from twelve grain-fed Nellore carcasses. The animals were slaughtered after stunning (STU; n=6) or without stunning (WST; n=6) and after 24 hours postmortem, the LL was sliced into 2.54-cm steaks, packed under aerobic conditions, and stored at 4°C for nine days. Proximate composition was analyzed on day 0, whereas protein oxidation (carbonyl content) and texture profile (hardness, chewiness, cohesiveness, and springiness) were evaluated on days 0, 3, 6, and 9. STU and WST steaks exhibited similar proximate composition, hardness, and chewiness (p > 0.05). WST steaks exhibited greater protein oxidation and lower cohesiveness than their STU counterparts on day 0 (p < 0.05). Concerning the storage period, WST steaks demonstrated a decrease in springiness and a more pronounced increase in cohesiveness than their STU counterparts (p < 0.05). These results indicated that the harvest method influenced LL protein oxidation and texture profile from Bos indicus cattle.

ABSTRACT Objective: Verify interobserver and intraobserver agreement of malignant compressive vertebral fractures (MCVF) diagnosis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods: We retrospectively included a lumbar spine MRI of 63 patients with non-traumatic compressive vertebral fracture diagnoses. Each lumbar vertebra was classified as: without fracture, with fracture of benign characteristics, or with fracture of malignant characteristics. Two medical residents in radiology, one musculoskeletal radiologist fellow, one musculoskeletal radiologist, and two spine surgeons evaluated MRI exams, independently and blindly. Each observer performed two readings, with a 15-day interval between evaluations. A simple Kappa coefficient was used to calculate the intra and interobserver agreement. The reference standard classification was based on bone biopsy or clinical, and imaging follow-up of at least two years, for diagnostic performance analysis. Diagnostic performance was assessed by calculating sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and positive and negative predictive values with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: We observed substantial to perfect intraobserver agreement (kappa: 0.80 to 1.00) and substantial interobserver agreement (kappa 0.64 to 0.77). In general, the sensitivity for the detection of MCVF was moderate, except for the second-year radiology resident that achieved a lower sensitivity. The specificity, accuracy, and negative predictive value were high for all observers. Conclusion: MCVF diagnosis using MRI showed substantial interobserver agreement. The second-year medical resident achieved lower sensitivity but high specificity for MCVF. Regarding the seniors, there was no statistical significance between spine surgeons and the musculoskeletal radiologist. Level of Evidence III; Diagnostic.

RESUMO Objetivo: Verificar a concordância interobservador e intraobservador no diagnóstico de fraturas vertebrais compressivas malignas (MCVF) por meio de ressonância magnética (MRI). Métodos: Incluiu-se retrospectivamente a ressonância magnética da coluna lombar de 63 pacientes com diagnóstico de fratura vertebral compressiva não traumática. Cada vértebra lombar foi classificada da seguinte forma: sem fratura, com fratura de características benignas ou com fratura de características malignas. Dois médicos residentes em radiologia, um pesquisador radiologista musculoesquelético, um radiologista musculoesquelético e dois cirurgiões da coluna vertebral avaliaram os exames de ressonância magnética, independentemente e cegamente. Cada observador realizou duas leituras, com um intervalo de 15 dias entre as avaliações. O coeficiente Kappa simples foi utilizado para calcular o acordo intra e interobservador. A classificação padrão de referência foi baseada em biópsia óssea ou clínica, e acompanhamento por imagem de pelo menos dois anos, para análise de desempenho diagnóstico. O desempenho diagnóstico foi avaliado através do cálculo de sensibilidade, especificidade, precisão, valores preditivos positivos e negativos com um intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC). Resultados: Foi observada concordância substancial a perfeita intraobservador (kappa: 0,80 a 1,00) e concordância substancial interobservador (kappa 0,64 a 0,77). Em geral, a sensibilidade para a detecção de MCVF foi moderada, exceto para o segundo ano de residência radiológica que alcançou uma sensibilidade menor. A especificidade, precisão e valor preditivo negativo foram altos para todos os observadores. Conclusão: O diagnóstico de MCVF por ressonância magnética mostrou uma concordância substancial entre observadores. O residente médico do segundo ano alcançou uma sensibilidade menor, mas alta especificidade para MCVF. Com relação aos veteranos, não houve significância estatística entre os cirurgiões da coluna vertebral e o radiologista músculo-esquelético. Nível de Evidencia III; Diagnóstico.

ABSTRACT: The production chain of Penaeus vannamei require detailed quality evaluation from farm to processing plant, to maintain the quality standards. We evaluated the impact of production chain steps in main defects of P. vannamei as red hepatopancreas, detached cephalothorax and post-mult. Red hepatopancreas and detached cephalothorax exhibited the highest defect incidence, which are related to capture method and post-harvest handling procedures. Red hepatopancreas showed a positive correlation (r = 0.56; P = 0.008) with post-molts. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) explained 53.91% of total data variance, where the second principal component (PC2) contributed with 19.39% separating shrimp defects and management steps based on square cosines of red hepatopancreas and transport time. These results suggested that steps of production chain as well as post mortem process are directly related to shrimp defects, and the knowledge of these factors can contribute to improve the product quality.

RESUMO: A cadeia produtiva do Penaeus vannamei exige avaliações detalhadas quanto à qualidade do produto desde o campo até a planta de processamento, considerando a importância da manutenção dos padrões de qualidade. Foi avaliado o impacto das etapas da cadeia produtiva nos principais defeitos do P. vannamei como hepatopâncreas vermelho, cefalotórax desprendido e pós-mudas. Hepatopâncreas e o cefalotórax desprendido foram os defeitos de maior incidência, e estão relacionados ao método de despesca e manuseio pós-abate. O hepatopâncreas vermelho apresentou correlação positiva (r = 0,56; P = 0.008) com pós-muda. A Análise de Componentes Principais (ACP) explicou 53,91% da variância total dos dados, onde o segundo componente principal (PC2) contribuiu com 19,39% separando os defeitos do camarão e as etapas de manejo com base nos cossenos quadrados do hepatopâncreas vermelho e tempo de transporte. Esses resultados sugerem que as etapas da cadeia produtiva bem como o processo post mortem estão diretamente relacionados aos defeitos dos camarões, e o conhecimento desses fatores pode contribuir para a melhoria da qualidade do produto.

Abstract Neurological disorders in cattle comprise a group of economically relevant diseases with high occurrence and mortality. In this way, the objective was to carry out an epidemiological study of the diseases with neurological manifestations in cattle admitted (alive or dead) to the Garanhuns Bovine Clinic/Federal Rural University of Pernambuco (CBG/UFRPE) from January 2009 to December 2019. Epidemiological information was collected from the clinical records regarding the age group, rearing system, time of year, and area of origin of the animals. The diseases were grouped into categories according to their origin: toxic or toxi-infectious, viral, traumatic/physical, parasitic, metabolic degenerative, bacterial, neoplastic, and others. A total of 6103 cattle were treated during the study period, of which 604 (10.1%) were diagnosed with diseases that had neurological manifestations. Of these, 331 cases were of single occurrence, and 231 cases occurred as outbreaks in the herd. Death was the outcome in almost 80% of the cases (465/596). The frequencies of the different categories were toxic or toxi-infectious (25.2%), viral (21.5%), traumatic/physical (13.6%), parasitic (9.8%), metabolic (9.3%), degenerative (2.3%), bacterial (2.2%), neoplastic (1.2%), and others (1.2%). It was found that almost half of the animals were older than 24 months (229/475), almost 80% were females, more than 60% were submitted to a semi-intensive to intensive rearing system, and the occurrence of disease was higher during the dry period of the year (363/614). The three most frequent neurological diseases in this study were rabies, trauma, and botulism.

Resumo Os distúrbios neurológicos em bovinos abrangem um grupo de enfermidades economicamente relevantes de elevada ocorrência e mortalidade. Desta forma, objetivou-se realizar um estudo epidemiológico das enfermidades que cursaram com manifestações neurológicas que deram entrada (vivos ou mortos) na Clínica de Bovinos de Garanhuns/Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco no período de janeiro de 2009 a dezembro de 2019. Nos prontuários clínicos, foram coletadas informaçõe epidemiológicas referentes ao sexo; a faixa etária; ao sistema de criação, época do ano e a área de procedência dos animais. As doenças foram agrupadas em categorias de acordo com sua origem: tóxica ou toxi-infecciosa, viral, traumática, parasitária, degenerativa, metabólica, bacteriana, neoplásica e outras. Um total de 6103 bovinos foram atendidos no período estudado, dos quais 604 (10,1 %) foram diagnosticados com enfermidades que cursaram com manifestações neurológicas. Destes, 331 casos foram de ocorrência individual, 231 casos cursaram como surtos no rebanho. Quase 80% dos casos (465/596) teve o óbito como desfecho. As frequências das distintas categoria foram tóxica ou toxi-infecciosa (25,2%), viral (21,5%), traumática/física (13,6%), parasitária (9,8%), metabólica (9,3%, degenerativa (2,3%), bacteriana (2,2%), neoplásica (1,2%), outras (1,2%). Verificou-se que quase metade dos animais apresentavam idade superior a 24 meses (229/475), quase 80% eram fêmeas, mais de 60% eram submetidos a um sistema de criação de semi-intensivo a intensivo e a ocorrência foi maior durante o período seco do ano (363/614). As três enfermidades com manifestações neurológicas de maior ocorrência neste estudo foram a raiva, os traumatismos e o botulismo.

Abstract The prediction of load capacity and the control of the execution of the Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) piles are often exercised with components of empiricism and intuition. This fact is often added to the uncertainties arising from the formation of the soils and the limitations of preliminary studies that support the project design. In this context, aiming to aid the executive control of CFA, a semi-empirical method is proposed based on the soil type, geometric dimensions of the piles, and the installation energy obtained during the pile excavation. The method makes it possible to determine the CFA pile load capacity during the execution process of each pile of pilling. As a consequence of the proposed method, the settlement of each pile can be controlled through the quantification of the energy required or the work carried out to excavate each pile through a specific software installed in the machinery monitoring system that increases the safety and reliability of the piling. Resumo Objetivo Avaliar os pacientes submetidos a reparo artroscópico do manguito rotador (MR) comparando os resultados de força muscular, funcionais e de dor obtidos em 2 grupos distintos: de pacientes < 55 anos (G55) e em pacientes > 65 anos (G65). Métodos A coleta de dados foi realizada com 63 participantes (29 pacientes < 55 anos e 34 > 65 anos), em 2 momentos, analisando: A) características demográficas, cirúrgicas e das lesões de MR; B) variáveis funcionais, força muscular e dor. Resultados Foram observados maiores níveis de na força de elevação anterior, rotação lateral e rotação medial do ombro operado no grupo G55. Porém, quando avaliada a diferença entre estas forças do ombro operado e do ombro contralateral, não se observou diferença significativa entre os grupos. As demais variáveis de função e dor foram similares (p> 0,05). Também não houve diferença entre os grupos nos escores University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA, na sigla em inglês) (p= 0,56) e Constant (p= 0,99). Conclusão O reparo artroscópico do MR em pacientes mais velhos, ativos e selecionados pode obter melhora funcional e de qualidade de vida similar ao realizado em pacientes mais jovens.

Abstract Objective To evaluate patients submitted to arthroscopic repair of the rotator cuff (RC) comparing the results of muscle, functional strength, and pain obtained in 2 distinct groups: patients < 55 years old (G55) and patients > 65 years old (G65). Methods Data collection was performed with 63 participants (29 < 55 years old and 34 > 65 years old), in 2 moments, analyzing: A) demographic, surgical and RC lesion characteristics; B) functional variables, muscle strength, and pain. Results Higher levels of anterior elevation force, lateral, and medial rotation of the operated shoulder were observed in group G55. However, when the difference between these forces of the operated shoulder and of the contralateral shoulder was evaluated, there was no significant difference between the groups. The other variables of function and pain were similar (p> 0.05). There was also no difference between the groups in the University of California at Los Angeles Shoulder Rating Scale (UCLA) (p= 0.56) and Constant-Murley Score (p= 0.99) scores. Conclusion Arthroscopic repair of the RC in older, active, selected patients may achieve functional improvement and quality of life similar to that performed in younger patients.

ABSTRACT Neurobrucellosis is caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella and is responsible for several clinical manifestations, making diagnosis challenging. The most common route of infection is through the consumption of unpasteurized or raw dairy products such as fresh milk, butter, and cheese. As neurological complications can develop chronically, they are frequently misdiagnosed as other infections, such as tuberculosis. This report reviews the clinical manifestations, diagnostic approach, treatment, and prognosis of neurobrucellosis, illustrating a case of chronic intracranial hypertension and meningoencephalitis secondary to brucellosis. The clinical presentation of brucellosis can mimic several systemic diseases, resulting in diagnostic delays and clinical complications. A high degree of suspicion is required, and neurobrucellosis should always be considered in the differential diagnosis of chronic meningitis.

Abstract: Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1 (ALDH-1) is a marker of stem cells in a variety of diseases, but its role in individuals with chronic inflammatory periapical lesions remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of cells with a stem cell profile based on the immunoexpression of ALDH-1 in periapical granulomas (PGs) and radicular cysts (RCs). A total of 51 cases of periapical lesions (25 PGs and 26 RCs) were subjected to immunohistochemical study. The anti-ALDH-1 antibody was applied using the immunoperoxidase technique. An immunoexpression score (intensity vs. percentage of cells) was used, with the cases being classified as low expression (score: 0 to 4) and high expression (score: 6 to 9). The Chi-square test was used with a 5% level of significance. Immunoexpression of ALDH-1 was detected in all cases of PGs and RCs. In PG cases, the expression was diffuse in connective tissue cells, with most cases exhibiting high expression (n = 18; 69.2%), while in RC cases the expression revealed focal distribution in cells of the capsule and epithelial cells of the cystic lining, with most cases classified as low expression (n = 18; 72%). Significant differences in the expression scores of ALDH-1 were observed in PGs (p = 0.003). The variable expression of ALDH-1 suggests the presence of cells with stem cell profiles in PGs and RCs. These findings suggest that periapical tissues infiltrated by chronic inflammation can recruit important cells for the repair or evolution of periapical lesions.

RESUMO O Mexilhão dourado é uma espécie invasora no Brasil que causa impactos ambientais, remove espécies nativas e modifica condições microecológicas, além de afetar hidroelétricas e sistemas de tratamento de água. O objetivo deste estudo é estabelecer um método que seja ao mesmo tempo eficaz e eficiente para quantificação da população do mexilhão dourado em reservatórios de hidrelétricas, visando o controle populacional do animal. Um modelo matemático bidimensional foi desenvolvido combinando hidrodinâmica e dinâmica populacional para simular a distribuição de mexilhões em um reservatório. Os resultados mostraram que a região da barragem foi progressivamente infestada por mexilhões, e depois de 18 messes de simulação alcançou 80% da sua capacidade suporte. O método se mostrou satisfatório e o mapa de localização dos agrupamentos de mexilhões corresponde a observações in situ. Além disso, o resultado da simulação da densidade das algas correspondeu ao mapa de densidade de clorofila obtido por imagens de satélite. A metodologia pode ser aplicada a novas áreas e deve ser expandida para prever variações populacionais, servindo para guiar medidas de preservação ambiental e de recuperação de reservatórios impactados, apresentando uma ferramenta alternativa para os operadores hidrelétricos, que podem utilizar as informações junto as inspeções locais no planejamento dos intervalos de manutenção antes que a infestação danifique os equipamentos.

ABSTRACT Golden mussel is an invasive species in Brazil which impacts local environments, dislocating native species and altering microecological conditions as well as affecting hydroelectric power plants and water treatment systems. The objective of this research is to establish a method that is both effective and efficient to quantify the population of the Golden mussel in hydroelectric power plant reservoirs, with a focus on population control measures. A two-dimensional mathematical model was developed combining hydrodynamics and populational dynamics to simulate the distribution of mussels in a reservoir. The results showed that dam’s region was progressively infested, and after 18 months of simulation it has reached around 80% of its carrying capacity. The method proved to be satisfactory and the generated map of cluster locations for the golden mussel corresponds to field observations. Furthermore, the result of the algae density simulation matched chlorophyll-a density map obtained from satellite images. The methodology can be further applied to new areas and could be expanded to predict population variations in order to guide environmental measures for preservation and recovery of impacted reservoirs, presenting another tool for hydroelectric operators who can use information together with field inspections to plan maintenance intervals before infestation damages equipment.

Abstract Microalgae are considered a rich source of biostimulants for plants, as an excellent business opportunity for the agricultural sector, as they can activate plant metabolism, contributing to the improvement in physiological performance, phytomass and, subsequently, vigor and quality of seedlings. The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of Spirulina platensis biomass, in enabling improvements in physiological performance, phytomass and, subsequently, vigor and quality of cashew rootstock seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, in a 4 x 2 factorial scheme (concentrations x rootstock), with three replications. The concentrations used were 0%, 0.04%, 0.08%, and 0.12% and the FAGA and CCP 76 genotypes. The seeds were immersed in the solutions for 12 hours. Applications were made via the leaves at 30 days after sowing (DAS), with an interval of seven days between each application and at 90 DAS evaluations were made. The FAGA and CCP 76 genotypes showed a positive response to the supply of S. platensis, with concentrations 0.04% and 0.08% which provided greater root length, aerial part length, number of leaves, diameter and leaf area. Concentrations 0.04% and 0.08% also promoted better percentages in the physiology of the CCP 76 genotype, while the FAGA genotype showed opposite action, which may be related to the mode of action of the microalgae on the different genetic and phenotypic characteristics of each genotype. The 0.12% concentration provided greater accumulations of aerial part and total dry mass to the genotypes.
