Abstract The aim of the present study was to analyze the management organization of food and nutrition actions in the municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul. This is a descriptive-exploratory study carried out in Mato Grosso do Sul, in which each municipal food and nutrition manager answered questions about performance, governance and financing profile. Data analysis applied frequency, chi-square test and decision tree tools. All cities were included (n=79). Most of the participants were female (92.4%), white (62%), nurses (45.6%) or nutritionists (36.7%). Financial management proved to be so incipient in the state since specific food and nutrition funding was neglected. The absence of a technical area in the municipality’s organizational chart was consistent with the lack of knowledge of actions, goals and resource allocation. Their presence coincided with having formally appointed technical managers, municipal food and nutrition policy, goals and elaboration of specialized materials. The present study also proposed a decision tree pointing that having a nutritionist in the team led to a positive result. The failures found in this study partly clarify the causes of the unsettling situation in the state. Our findings can support the creation of intervention strategies.

ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the prevalence of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) alterations in children and adolescents in Brazil. Materials and methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence. The search for articles was carried out in the databases: Medline (PubMed), Embase, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs). The meta-analysis was performed using the random effects model. The I² test was used to identify heterogeneity. Results: The present metanalysis revealed a significant prevalence of altered lipid profile in children and adolescents in Brazil. Regarding lipoprotein fractions, the prevalence of altered TC level was 27.47% (95% CI 24.36-30.82), and a smaller prevalence was observed for LDL cholesterol (19.29% – 95% CI 15.21-24.16). The models revealed high heterogeneity (I² = 99%; p < 0.01), however the precise source of it was not identified; although type of school, age group, year and the region of Brazil appeared to influence the estimations of altered lipid profiles. Conclusion: An important prevalence of lipid alterations was observed among Brazilian children and adolescents. Those results reinforce the importance of knowing the lipid profile of children and adolescents to perform early interventions for this public.

O procedimento de pesquisa foi conduzido nas bases de dados EMBASE, Web of Science, Cinahl, LILACS e MEDLINE (PubMed). A relação entre os fatores socioeconômicos da microrregião de residência e o ganho de peso gestacional foi evidenciada pela ligação entre a residência em bairros de alta pobreza e o ganho de peso gestacional inadequado. Este estudo revelou a maior prevalência de ganho de peso gestacional excessivo em gestantes que vivem em áreas urbanas. Fatores ambientais da área de residência das gestantes implicados no ganho de peso gestacional excessivo. As descobertas desse estudo podem, portanto, contribuir para o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas para evitar o ganho de peso gestacional inadequado.

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Social distancing has led to lifestyle changes among older adults during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence risk of sarcopenia (RS) and investigate its associated factors during the COVID-19 pandemic in older Brazilian adults. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional observational analysis of baseline data as part of the Remobilize Study. METHODS: Participants in the study were older adults (≥ 60 years), excluding those who were bedridden or institutionalized. The data collected consisted of answers about the RS (SARC-F), functional status, walking, sedentary behavior (SB), pain, comorbidity, and life space mobility. RESULTS: A total of 1,482 older adults (70 ± 8.14 years, 74% women) participated in the study, and an RS prevalence of 17.1% was found. (95% confidence interval [CI] 15.25–19.15%). The adjusted multivariate model showed a significant association between RS and functional limitation (odds ratio [OR]: 19.05; CI 13.00–28.32), comorbidity (OR: 5.11; CI 3.44–7.81), pain (OR: 4.56; CI 3.33–6.28), total walking (OR: 0.99; CI 0.99–1.00), SB of 8–10 hours (OR: 1.85; CI 1.15–2.93), and SB of > 10 hours (OR: 3.93; CI 2.48–6.22). RS was associated with mobility during the pandemic (OR: 0.97; CI 0.96–0.98). P < 0.05. CONCLUSIONS: During the pandemic, the prevalence of RS in older Brazilians was estimated at 17.1%. Moderate to severe functional limitation, comorbidities, presence of pain, walking, longer SB period, and reduced life space mobility significantly contributed to RS in older adults during the pandemic.

ABSTRACT The constant monitoring of water quality is fundamental for the understanding of the aquatic environment, yet it demands great financial investments and is susceptible to inconsistencies and missing values. Using a database composed of 59 sampling campaigns, performed for 12 years, on 10 monitoring stations along the Iguassu River Basin (Southern Brazil), this study presents a model, based on feed-forward neural networks, which imputed 1,370 values for 11 traditional water quality parameters, as well as 3 contaminants of emerging concern (caffeine, estradiol and ethinylestradiol). The model validation errors varied from 0.978 mg L-1 and 0.017 mg L-1 for the traditional parameters, for caffeine the validation error was of 0.212 µg L-1 and for the hormones, the errors were of 0.04 µg L-1 (E1) and 0.044 µg L-1 (EE1). The models underwent two techniques to understand the operations performed within the model (isolation and nullification), which were consistent to those explained by natural processes. The results point to the validity of modeling water quality parameters (especially the concentrations of caffeine) through neural networks, which could lead to better resource allocation in environmental monitoring, as well as improving available datasets and valuing previous monitoring efforts.

RESUMO O monitoramento constante da qualidade da água é fundamental para o entendimento dos ambientes aquáticos, mas este esforço demanda grandes investimentos financeiros, além de estar suscetível a inconsistências e falhas na obtenção dos valores. Usando uma base de dados composta por 59 campanhas amostrais, realizadas durante um período de 12 anos, em 10 estações de monitoramento ao longo da bacia do rio Iguaçú, este trabalho apresentou um modelo baseado em redes neurais artificiais que preencheu 1.370 valores para onze parâmetros tradicionais de qualidade da água. Os erros de validação do modelo variaram de 0,978 mg L-1 a 0,017 mg L-1 para os parâmetros tradicionais, enquanto para a cafeína, este erro foi de 0,212 µg L-1 e para os hormônios de 0,04 µg L-1 (E1) e 0,044 µg L-1 (EE1). Duas técnicas (isolamento e anulação) foram aplicadas nos modelos para se entender o relacionamento treinado pelo modelo entre as variáveis de entrada e saída. Os resultados apontam para a viabilidade da aplicação de redes neurais para a modelagem de parâmetros de qualidade da água (em especial, a cafeína), o que poderia levar a uma melhor alocação de recursos no monitoramento ambiental, além de expandir os bancos de dados disponíveis e valorizar os esforços despendidos para este monitoramento.

Abstract Considering the relevance of establishing biodiversity conservation tools, the study aimed to investigate the TCM199 supplemented with different follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations on survival and development of fresh and vitrified preantral follicles enclosed in red-rumped agouti ovarian tissues cultured in vitro. In the first experiment, six pairs of ovaries were fragmented and cultured for 6 days according to groups: 10 ng/mL pFSH (FSH10 group) and 50 ng/mL (FSH50 group). Non-cultured tissues were considered as a control. In the second experiment, vitrified/warmed fragments of four pairs of ovaries were cultured with the best concentration of FSH established (cryopreserved and cultured group). Non-cryopreserved (fresh control group) and cryopreserved but non-cultured (non-cultured group) tissues were used as controls. For both experiments, preantral follicles were evaluated for survival and development using morphological and viability analysis by trypan blue staining. After culturing fresh samples, FSH50 showed a higher percentage of morphologically normal follicles when compared to FSH10 (P < 0.05). This same response was observed for primordial follicles. Regardless of the concentrations of FSH used during in vitro culture, no difference was observed regarding the percentage of viable follicles and diameters (P > 0.05). Thus, the FSH50 group was used for second experiment, in which 76.2 ± 7.2% normal preantral follicles previously vitrified was found after 6-day culture, also presenting the highest values (P < 0.05) for morphology of primordial follicles (95.2 ± 4.7%). Nevertheless, in vitro culture did not affect the viability and diameter of preantral follicles of cryopreserved tissues (P > 0.05). In conclusion, TCM199 supplemented with 50 ng/mL FSH was efficient in maintaining the in vitro survival of fresh and vitrified red-rumped agouti preantral follicles. This was the first study related to the in vitro culture of ovarian preantral follicles in this species, aiming to contribute to its conservation.

Abstract Objective: This qualitative, cross-sectional study aimed to understand the social representations of obesity and the weight loss process in women who underwent bariatric surgery. Methods: Sixteen post-bariatric surgery (between 3 and 12 months post-surgery) women participated in semi-structured, face-to-face and individual interviews. The Thematic Analysis of Braun and Clarke (2006) was carried out to evaluate the data. Results: It were identifying 15 codes, 11 sub-themes, grouped into 3 themes: 1) Obesity: “The monster of contemporary society”; 2) “Today is different from what it was before”: Re-signifying eating; and 3) I’m happy, very happy”: The emergence of a new life. It was observed that the low tolerance to obesity in contemporary times implies the perception that people with obesity not worthy living in society. Thus, bariatric surgery is seen as the solution to the problem, as a way to feel ‘normal’ and visible, through a more socially accepted body. Conclusion: The discourse on health, linked to physical limitations, as the main justification for performing the surgery, seems to be overlaid by esthetic issues in the weight loss process.

Resumo Objetivo: Esta pesquisa qualitativa, de corte transversal, objetivou compreender as representações sociais da obesidade e do processo de emagrecimento em mulheres que realizaram cirurgia bariátrica. Método: Dezesseis mulheres no pós-operatório (entre 3 e 12 meses) participaram das entrevistas semiestruturadas, presenciais e individuais. A análise dos dados foi feita pela Análise Temática de Braun e Clarke (2006). Resultados: Foram identificados 15 códigos e 11 subtemas, agrupados em 3 temas: 1) Obesidade: “O monstro da sociedade contemporânea”; 2) “Hoje é diferente do que era antes”: Ressignificando o comer; e 3) “Tô feliz, muito feliz”: O surgimento de uma vida nova. Os temas externalizaram a baixa tolerância às pessoas com obesidade na contemporaneidade, que implica na percepção de que elas não são dignas de conviver em sociedade. Assim, a cirurgia bariátrica é vista como a solução do problema- um meio para sentir-se ‘normal’ e visível, pela aproximação com um corpo mais aceito socialmente. Conclusão: O discurso sobre saúde, atrelado às limitações físicas, como justificativa principal para a realização da cirurgia, parece ser sobreposto pelas questões estéticas no processo de emagrecimento.

ABSTRACT The effects of diets containing oilseeds were measured to evaluate the productive and economic parameters in the finishing of young, feedlot Nellore bulls. Twenty-four young Nellore bulls were used, with an initial body weight (BW) of 311.46±0.37 kg and 24 months of age, distributed into individual stalls ( 4 × 20 m) in a completely randomized design, totaling four treatments with six repetitions per treatment. Four diets (control, based on corn and soybean meal, and three diets containing cottonseed, soybean, and sunflower) were evaluated. Feed and orts were measured daily to calculate intake and costs. The dry matter intake of the control group was higher than soybean (10.64 kg/day), cotton (9.88 kg/day), and sunflower (9.30 kg/day) treatments, respectively. The cottonseed treatment showed the highest average neutral detergent fiber intake. There was a dietary effect of diets on average daily gain, total weight gain, and final weight. The soybean treatment showed the highest performance, total gain (232.55 kg), and final weight (544.38 kg). Oilseed intake can modify the fatty acids profile in the meat, decreasing its saturated fatty acid content. Whole soybean seed favors performance, improves feed efficiency, fatty acid profile, and fat distribution in the carcass, and can reduce production costs.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability and performance of the agronomic traits of wheat cultivars in the southern region of Minas Gerais for the purpose of choosing parents for a rainfed wheat breeding program. We evaluated 78 wheat cultivars in two locations in Minas Gerais regarding different agronomic traits. The statistical analyses were carried out using Henderson’s mixed-model approach. The genetic values of the cultivars were predicted, and the heritabilities and accuracies were estimated for selection of cultivars. The cultivar × location interaction was decomposed into its simple and complex fractions. The genetic and environmental correlations between the traits were estimated, and selection was made for multiple traits using the sum of the standardized variables (Z-index). The genetic variance was significant for all the traits, and the cultivar × location interaction was significant. By the Z-index, 15 wheat cultivars more adapted were identified.

ABSTRACT Objective: To validate the measuring instrument that assesses healthcare residents’ use and adherence to personal protective equipment. Method: Methodological study developed in a virtual environment between August 2020 and March 2021 with primary care and hospital residents from the five regions of Brazil. The participants answered the adapted version of the “P.P.E.-PHC” for residents. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to validate the instrument. Results: 227 residents took part, the majority of whom were cis women (82.8%), worked in the Southeast region (58.1%), and in-hospital care (47.6%). The structure in eight domains (cap, gloves, safety behavior, N95 mask, hand hygiene, apron/coat, surgical mask, goggles/face shield) was confirmed. Only two items with a factor load of less than 0.5 were kept. Conclusion: The tool is valid for measuring residents’ use of and adherence to personal protective equipment, which helps to guide training and occupational safety.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Validar el instrumento de medición que evalúa el uso y la adhesión de los equipos de protección individual entre los residentes de salud. Método: Estudio metodológico desarrollado en un entorno virtual entre agosto de 2020 y marzo de 2021 con residentes de atención primaria y hospitalaria de las cinco regiones de Brasil. Los participantes respondieron a la versión adaptada del “E.P.I.-APS” para residentes. Se utilizó un análisis factorial confirmatorio para validar el instrumento. Resultados: Participaron 227 residentes, en su mayoría mujeres cis (82,8%), que trabajaban en el sureste (58,1%) y en cuidados hospitalarios (47,6%). Se confirmó la estructura en ocho dominios (gorro; guantes; comportamiento de seguridad; mascarilla N95; higiene de las manos; delantal/abrigo; mascarilla quirúrgica; gafas/protector facial). Sólo se mantuvieron dos ítems con una carga factorial inferior a 0,5. Conclusión: La herramienta es válida para medir el uso y la adhesión de los equipos de protección individual entre los residentes, lo que ayuda a orientar la formación y la seguridad laboral.

RESUMO Objetivo: Validar o instrumento de medida que avalia o uso e a adesão de equipamentos de proteção individual entre os residentes de saúde. Método: Estudo metodológico desenvolvido em ambiente virtual entre agosto de 2020 e março de 2021 com residentes da atenção primária e hospitalar das cinco regiões do Brasil. Os participantes responderam a versão adaptada para residentes do “E.P.I.-APS”. Utilizou-se a análise fatorial confirmatória para validação do instrumento. Resultados: Participaram 227 residentes, sendo maioria mulher cis (82,8%), atuavam na região Sudeste (58,1%) e em atenção hospitalar (47,6%). A estrutura em oito domínios (gorro/touca; luvas; comportamento de segurança; máscara N95; higienização das mãos; avental/capote; máscara cirúrgica; óculos de proteção/protetor facial) foi confirmada. Apenas dois itens com carga fatorial inferior a 0,5 foram mantidos. Conclusão: O instrumento é válido para mensurar o uso e adesão aos equipamentos de proteção individual entre residentes, o que contribui para direcionar a formação e a segurança laboral.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes in goats and sheep to the anthelmintic drugs levamisole, ivermectin, and albendazole in the metropolitan region of São Luís Island, Maranhão, Brazil. Fecal samples were collected from 150 animals across four different farms; two farms had goats, and the other two had sheep. The samples were then randomly divided into three to four groups of 10 animals: Group I: control, without treatment; Group II: ivermectin treatment; Group III: levamisole treatment; and Group IV: albendazole treatment. Stool samples were collected from the rectal ampulla one day before treatment and 10 days after anthelmintic treatment. Individual coproparasitological examinations were performed using the modified McMaster technique at the Animal Health Laboratory of the Federal Institute of Maranhão, Campus São Luís-Maracanã. The efficacies of the anthelmintic drugs against gastrointestinal nematodes in goats and sheep were: 14.28%, and 13.6% for ivermectin; 0% and 79.4% for levamisole; and 59.8% and 3.43% for albendazole, respectively Gastrointestinal nematodes demonstrated multiple anthelmintic resistance, as the percentage reduction in egg count was less than 95% and the lower limit of the confidence interval was less than 90%.

Resumo Objetivou-se determinar a resistência de nematoides gastrintestinais aos anti-helmínticos levamisol, ivermectina e albendazol em caprinos e ovinos da região metropolitana da Ilha de São Luís, Maranhão, Brasil. Foram coletadas amostras de fezes de 150 animais de quatro propriedades diferentes, sendo 2 com caprinos e 2 com ovinos, e aleatoriamente distribuídos de três a quatro grupos de 10 animais: Grupo I: grupo controle, sem tratamento. Grupo II: tratado com anti-helmíntico à base de ivermectina, administrado oralmente na dose de 200 mcg/kg; Grupo III: tratado com anti-helmíntico à base de levamisol, administrado oralmente na dose de 7,5mg/kg e Grupo IV: tratado com anti-helmíntico à base de albendazol administrado oralmente na dose de 3mg/kg. Amostras de fezes foram colhidas da ampola retal um dia antes do tratamento e 10 dias após o tratamento anti-helmíntico. Foram feitos exames coproparasitológicos individuais, pela técnica de McMaster modificada, no Laboratório de Sanidade Animal, do Instituto Federal do Maranhão (IFMA), Campus São Luís-Maracanã. A ivermectina, na espécie caprina, mostrou eficácia de 14,28%, enquanato para ovina, 13,6 e 52,2%. Considerando o levamisol na espécie caprina, não apresentou eficácia contra os nematoides gastrintestinais, enquanto para ovinos, apresentou eficácia de 79,4%. Já o albendazol, apresentou eficácia de 59,8% para caprinos, e 3,43% para ovinos. Os nematoides gastrintestinais demonstraram resistência múltipla (RAM), visto que a percentagem de redução da contagem de ovos foi inferior a 95% e o limite inferior do intervalo de confiança menor do que 90%.

ABSTRACT Purpose: After partial hepatectomy (PH), the remaining liver (RL) undergoes regenerative response proportional to the host. Limited literature exists on hepatic viability after tissue injury during hypothermic preservation. Spectroscopy measures cellular fluorescence and is explored for tissue characterization and parameter investigation. This study aimed to assess fluorescence analysis (spectroscopy) in evaluating liver viability and its relationship with hepatic tissue regeneration 24 hours after PH. Additionally, we analyzed liver regeneration in RL after 70% partial hepatectomy under hypothermic conditions with laser irradiation. Methods: Fifty-six Wistar rats were divided into four groups: total non-perfused liver (control), total perfused liver, partial hepatectomy “in situ”, and partial hepatectomy “ex situ”. Tissue analysis was performed at 0 and 24 hours using spectroscopy with laser devices emitting at 532 (green) and 405 nm (violet). Results: Spectroscopy identified tissue viability based on consistent results with Ki67 staining. The fluorescence spectra and Ki67 analysis displayed similar patterns, linking proliferative activity and absorption intensity. Conclusions: Fluorescence spectroscopy proves to be promising for real-time analysis of cellular activity and viability. Metabolic activity was observed in groups of live animals and hypothermically preserved samples, indicating cellular function even under blood deprivation and hypothermic conditions.
