Abstract The objective is to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments and storage on the shear strength of ultratranslucent zirconia. 36 blocks of ultra-translucent zirconia were fabricated (7x7x2mm) and sintered. Then, divided into 12 groups according to the “surface treatment” (C -Primer; Al -Sandblasting with Al2O3 + Primer; Si -Silicate + Primer; Gl -Glaze + HF + Primer; Z -Zirlink; Zp -Zirlink + Primer) and “storage” factors (ST-with 150 days/37º and without). After surface treatment, five cylinders (Ø=2mm; h=2.0mm) of resin cement (n=15) were constructed in each ceramic block; at the end, the shear strength test was performed (1mm/min, 50Kgf), and analysis of surface failures. 60 additional samples (2x2x2mm) were made for extras analysis (surface roughness, MEV, and EDS). Bond strength and surface roughness data were statistically evaluated by ANOVA (2 factors/1 factor), Tukey test (5%), and Weibull analysis, respectively. ANOVA (2-way) revealed that all factors were statistically significant for bond strength. The silicatization groups (SiST: 30.47AMPa; Si: 29.21AMPa) showed the highest bond strength values, regardless of storage (Tukey's test). While the groups treated with Zirlink (ZST: 2.76FMPa; Z: 5.27EFMPa) showed the lowest values, just similar to the GlST group (5.14EFMPa). The Weibull modulus (m) showed a statistical difference between groups (p=0.000). ANOVA (1 factor) revealed that the "surface treatment" factor (p=0.0000) was statistically significant for surface roughness. Resumo O objetivo é avaliar o efeito de diferentes tratamentos superficiais e do envelhecimento na resistência ao cisalhamento da zircônia ultratranslúcida. Foram confeccionados 36 blocos de zircônia ultratranslúcida (7x7x2mm) e sinterizados. Em seguida, divididos em 12 grupos de acordo com o “tratamento de superfície” (C-Primer; Al-Jateamento com Al2O3+Primer; Si-Silicato+Primer; Gl -Glaze+HF+Primer; Z-Zirlink; Zp-Zirlink+Primer) e fatores de “armazenamento” (ST-com, 150 dias/37º e sem). Após o tratamento superficial, foram construídos cinco cilindros (Ø=2mm; h=2,0mm) de cimento resinoso (n=15) em cada bloco cerâmico; ao final foi realizado o ensaio de resistência ao cisalhamento (1mm/min, 50Kgf) e análise de falhas superficiais. Foram confeccionadas 60 amostras adicionais (2x2x2mm) para análises extras (rugosidade superficial, MEV e EDS). ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To assess maternal mortality (MM) in Brazilian Black, Pardo, and White women. METHODS We evaluated the maternal mortality rate (MMR) using data from the Brazilian Ministry of Health public databases from 2017 to 2022. We compared MMR among Black, Pardo, and White women according to the region of the country, age, and cause. For statistical analysis, the Q2 test prevalence ratio (PR) and confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS From 2017 to 2022, the general MMR was 68.0/100,000 live births (LB). The MMR was almost twice as high among Black women compared to White (125.81 vs 64.15, PR = 1.96, 95%CI:1.84–2.08) and Pardo women (125.8 vs 64.0, PR = 1.96, 95%CI: 1.85–2.09). MMR was higher among Black women in all geographical regions, and the Southeast region reached the highest difference among Black and White women (115.5 versus 60.8, PR = 2.48, 95%CI: 2.03–3.03). During the covid-19 pandemic, MMR increased in all groups of women (Black 144.1, Pardo 74.8 and White 80.5/100.000 LB), and the differences between Black and White (PR = 1.79, 95%CI: 1.64–1.95) and Black and Pardo (PR = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.77–2.09) remained. Abstract Anticancer therapy often leads to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and infertility due to the extreme sensitivity of the ovarian follicle reserve to the effects of chemotherapy. Withanolides are known for their cytotoxic effect on cancer cells and low cytotoxicity on non-malignant or healthy cells. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the in vivo effects of three withanolides derivatives: 27-dehydroxy-24,25-epoxywithaferin A (WT1), 27-dehydroxywithaferin A (WT2), and withaferin A (WTA) on fertility, and the ovarian preantral follicles of young female mice. To achieve this, mice received 7 intraperitoneal doses of WT1, WT2, or WTA at a concentration of 2 mg/kg (Experiment I) and 5 or 10 mg/kg (Experiment II) over 15 alternate days. In experiment I, two days after administration of the last dose, half of the mice were mated to evaluate the effects of withanolides on fertility. The other half of the mice, as well as all mice from experiment II, were sacrificed for histological, inflammation, senescence, and immunohistochemical analyses of the follicles present in the ovary. Regardless of the administered withanolide, the concentration of 2 mg/kg did not show toxicity on the follicular morphology, ovarian function, or fertility of the mice. However, at concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/kg, the three derivatives (WT1, WT2, and WTA) increased follicular activation, cell proliferation, and ovarian senescence without affecting inflammatory cells. Furthermore, at a concentration of 10 mg/kg, the three withanolides showed intensified toxic effects, leading to DNA damage as evidenced by the labeling of γH2AX, activated Caspase 3, and TUNEL. We conclude that the cytotoxic effect of the tested withanolide derivatives (WT1, WT2, and WTA) in the concentration of 2 mg/kg did not show toxicity on the ovary. However, in higher concentrations, such as 10 mg/kg, toxic effects are potentiated, causing DNA damage. Abstract This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on dental trauma patient attendance. The study was registered in the PROSPERO system, using the CRD42021288398 protocol. Searching was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Lilacs, and OpenGrey databases, using the following keywords: “Tooth injuries,” “Dental trauma,” “Traumatic Dental injury,” and “COVID-19". We included observational studies evaluating dental trauma in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Quality assessment was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Cross-Sectional Studies. Meta-analysis was performed in RevMan 5.4 software with Odds Ratios as a pooled measure of effect, with a 95% confidence interval, and using random-effects modeling. After applying the eligibility criteria, 32 studies were included for qualitative analysis, in which 10 were used to assess the frequency of dental trauma diagnoses in dental emergencies. Despite the decrease of visits during COVID-19, the analysis revealed no difference between the pandemic and pre-pandemic periods. Regarding the type of dental trauma, two of the studies revealed no differences for the periods before and during the pandemic. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Racial disparities are differences among distinct subgroups of the human species; biologically, there are no scientifically proven reasons for them to exist. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of racism or racial discrimination on obstetric outcomes. DESIGN AND SETTING: Systematic review conducted at a tertiary/academic hospital. METHODS: The Cochrane Library, SCOPUS/EMBASE, PubMed, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov databases were searched from inception to June 2020. Studies presenting any type of racial discrimination, or any manifestation of racism that was perceived by women of any age in an obstetric scenario were included. Studies that only assessed racial disparities without including direct racism were excluded. The secondary outcomes evaluated included quality of antenatal care, intra and postpartum care, preterm birth and birthweight. The Risk of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Interventions (ROBINS-I) scale was used to assess the quality of evidence from non-randomized studies. RESULTS: A total of 508 records were retrieved and 29 were selected for qualitative synthesis. No meta-analysis could be performed due to the high heterogeneity across studies. Perceived racism was associated as a risk factor in 7/10 studies focusing on pregnancy and postpartum maternal outcomes, five studies on preterm birth, one study on small for gestational age and two studies on low birthweight. Overall, among the 29 studies, the risk of bias was classified as moderate. CONCLUSIONS: Perceived racism presented an association with poor obstetric outcomes. BACKGROUND Zika virus (ZIKV) was discovered in 1947 with the virus isolation from Rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) in Uganda forest, Africa. Old World Primates are involved in a sylvatic cycle of maintenance of this arbovirus, however a limited knowledge about the role of New World primates in ZIKV transmission cycles has been established. OBJECTIVE This work aimed to investigate the presence of enzootic circulation of ZIKV in New World Primates from three Brazilian states: São Paulo, Paraíba, and Paraná. METHODS We analyzed 100 non-human primate samples collected in 2018 and 2020 from free-ranging and captive environments from São Paulo (six municipalities belonging to Sorocaba region), Paraíba (João Pessoa municipality), and Paraná (Foz do Iguaçu municipality) using reverse transcriptase quantitative polymerase reaction (RT-qPCR) assays, indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). FINDINGS All samples (n = 141) tested negative for the presence of ZIKV genome from tissue and blood samples. In addition, all sera (n = 58) from Foz do Iguaçu’ non-human primates (NHPs) were negative in serological assays. MAIN CONCLUSION No evidence of ZIKV circulation (molecular and serological) was found in neotropical primates. In addition, the absence of antibodies against ZIKV suggests the absence of previous viral exposure of NHPs from Foz do Iguaçu-PR.

Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of replacing corn by double-distilled glycerin, a co-product of the biodiesel industry, on goat curd cheese in terms of physical-chemical, microbiological and sensory aspects. Twelve multiparas Saanen goats weighing 47.07 ± 2.41 kg and at 90 ± 5 days of lactation. The experimental design was completely randomized with two treatments (0 and 15% inclusion of glycerin). The physicochemical parameters analyzed were: fat (%), non-fat solids (%), protein (%), lactose (%), salts (%), relative density at 15/15 °C (gmL-1), index cryoscopic (°C), electrical conductivity (mScm-1), pH and acidity. The milk from each treatment was used to make the rennet cheese. The fat had a significant effect (P < 0.05) with inclusion of glycerin in the diet. The physicochemical characteristics of the cheese were influenced (P < 0.05) by feeding up to 15% of glycerin. Regarding sensory attributes, only firmness was influenced (P < 0.05) by the inclusion of glycerin in the diet of dairy goats. Bidistilled glycerin, when inserted in the diet of dairy goats at a level of 15%, causes a reduction in the lipid content of milk and cheese, consequently affecting the cheese yield, and the parameter of firmness in the sensory of the evaluated cheeses.

Resumo: Recentemente está crescendo a necessidade de tecnologias não invasivas, rápidas e precisas que possam estimar a qualidade das sementes. Entre essas tecnologias, destaca-se a análise de imagens de raios X para avaliação da morfologia interna das sementes. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficiência do software SARS na análise de radiografias digitais de sementes de braquiária, denominado SARS (Sistema de Análise de Radiografias de Sementes) na avaliação da qualidade física das sementes. Cinco lotes comerciais de sementes de Urochloa decumbens cv. Basilisk foram utilizados. As sementes foram produzidas na safra de 2018/2019. As imagens radiográficas das sementes foram analisadas por meio do SARS, por meio das quais foram obtidas características físicas. As sementes foram submetidas ao teste de germinação, no qual foram mensuradas variáveis relacionadas à qualidade fisiológica. Foi possível observar que as sementes com maior potencial de germinação e vigor apresentaram correlações fortes e significativas com algumas das variáveis físicas obtidas pelo SARS. Assim, a alta correlação do comprimento de plântulas e a densidade relativa das sementes é importante para validar o método de análise de imagens radiográficas de sementes. O SARS mostrou-se uma ferramenta eficiente para análise de radiografias digitais de sementes de braquiária, gerando descritores que dão suporte a análise morfométrica e interna das sementes, que podem ser associados à sua qualidade fisiológica. Os parâmetros físicos obtidos pela técnica têm estreita relação com a germinação e o vigor das sementes.

Abstract: Recently is growing the need for non-invasive, fast, and accurate technologies that can predict seed quality. Between these technologies, X-ray image analysis stand out for evaluation of the internal morphology of the seeds. Thus, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of a specialized software for analyzing digital radiographs of Urochloa decumbens seeds called SARS (Sistema de Análise de Radiografias de Sementes - Seed Radiograph Analysis System). Five comercial seed lots of U. decumbens cv. Basilisk were used. The seed lots were produced in the 2018/2019 crop season. Radiographic images of the seeds were analyzed in SARS, through which physical characteristics were obtained. The seeds were then subjected to germination test, in which variables related to the physiological quality were evaluated. It was possible to observe that the seeds with greater germination and vigor showed strong and significant correlations with some of the physical variables obtained using SARS. Thus, high correlation of seedling length and relative seed density is important for validating the seed radiographic image analysis method. SARS proved to be an efficient tool for analyzing digital radiographs of U. decumbens seeds. It can generate descriptors which support morphometric and internal analysis of the seeds. Physical parameters obtained by using the technique have close relationship with the germination and vigor of the seeds.

This work developed ternary films based on Poly(Lactic Acid) (PLA), Cloisite 30B (C30B) and Oregano Essential Oil (OEO) as proposal to be applied in food packaging. The films thus manufactured were unscathed, with reduced surface defects. Their thickness and moisture content varied according to the composition and content of each component in the formulation. Optical micrographs indicated a homogeneous morphology, with good distribution of clay in the matrix. FTIR data confirms the incorporation of OEO into the films. TGA analysis indicated that the thermal stability of the films was not significantly affected by the incorporation of C30B and OEO. OEO incorporation did not promote an efficient antimicrobial action which is probably due to its retention by the clay. Further studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis. The combination between C30B and OEO in the PLA polymeric matrix is a promising proposal.

Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os impactos ambientais ocasionados em áreas de mangue que sofreram modificações resultantes de atividades antrópicas (cultivo agrícola, desmatamento, construção civil) comparando com área de mangue conservado. Esta pesquisa se deu através da análise da sequência temporal de imagens aéreas (Google Earth), e análise da qualidade do solo mediante coletas em campo para avaliação dos indicadores químicos e biológicos nos diferentes sistemas de uso do solo. Por se tratarem de alterações permanentes e que afetaram o tipo do solo e a cobertura do mesmo, foram obtidas diferenças significativas entre as características químicas e biológicas dos quatro ambientes, com os diferentes sistemas de uso. O manguezal tem sofrido impactos negativos pelo manejo inadequado e ocupação do solo. A continuidade da intervenção antrópica no mangue dará prosseguimento ao desaparecimento deste ecossistema a longo prazo. Dentre os atributos químicos e biológicos utilizados para as análises realizadas, o alumínio e os organismos edáficos foram os que permitiram maior contribuição para descriminação do grau de perturbação das áreas de cultivo agrícola, desmatada e transição construção civil/manguezal.

ABSTRACT: The mangrove is a coastal ecosystem that is present in different parts of the world. It provides various ecosystem services from food supply to the influence of climate change. Due to the development of society, this ecosystem has been subjected to significant impacts from anthropogenic activities. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the environmental impacts caused in mangrove areas that have undergone modifications as a result of anthropic activities (agricultural cultivation, deforestation, civil construction) compared with those of conserved mangrove areas. This research took place through the analysis of the temporal sequence of aerial images (Google Earth) and soil quality analysis through field collections to evaluate the chemical and biological indicators in the different land use systems. As these are permanent changes that affect the type of soil and its coverage, significant differences were obtained between the chemical and biological characteristics of the four environments, with different usage systems. The mangrove has been negatively impacted by inadequate management and land occupation. Continuity of anthropic intervention in the mangrove will promote the disappearance of this ecosystem in the long term. Among the chemical and biological attributes used for the analyses that were performed, aluminum and edaphic organisms were the ones that allowed the greatest contribution of distinction from the degree of disturbance in areas of agricultural cultivation, deforestation and civil construction/mangrove transition.

Resumo: A inclusão de técnicas de análise de imagens para a avaliação precisa e rápida da qualidade de sementes florestais é altamente desejável. Entre as técnicas de imagem disponíveis, destacam-se o uso de imagens radiográficas digitais de sementes e a análise de imagens de plântulas, ainda pouco utilizadas na determinação da qualidade de sementes florestais. Objetivou-se com este trabalho, avaliar a viabilidade do uso da análise de imagens de sementes e plântulas na avaliação da qualidade física e fisiológica de sementes de Senna siamea. Imagens radiográficas de sementes de cinco lotes foram obtidas e, a partir delas, foram gerados descritores morfológicos e de integridade tecidual. Após a obtenção das imagens das sementes, estas foram submetidas ao teste de germinação e crescimento de plântulas, dos quais se extraíram variáveis relacionadas à qualidade fisiológica. As plântulas geradas foram escaneadas e analisadas por meio do software ImageJ. Os dados foram analisados por meio da análise de variância, correlação e análise de componentes principais. Os resultados mostraram diferenças entre os lotes de sementes quanto a sua qualidade fisiológica e integridade física de tecidos internos. Foram observadas correlações significativas entre as variáveis obtidas com a análise radiográfica e pelos testes de caracterização fisiológica das sementes. O uso das técnicas de análise de radiografias de sementes e de imagens de plântulas permitem acessar informações de integridade física e fisiológica de sementes de S. siamea.

Abstract: The inclusion of image analysis techniques for the accurate and rapid assessment of the quality of forest seeds is highly desirable. The use of digital radiographic images of seeds and the analysis of seedling images, still little used in determining the quality of forest seeds, are among the available imaging techniques. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using the analysis of images of seeds and seedlings in the assessment of the physical and physiological quality of Senna siamea seeds. Radiographic images of seeds were obtained from five seed lots, allowing generating morphological and tissue integrity descriptors. These seeds were then subjected to germination and seedling growth tests, which allowed obtaining variables related to physiological quality. The generated seedlings were scanned and analyzed using the software ImageJ. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance, correlation, and principal component analysis. The results showed differences between seed lots in terms of physiological quality and physical integrity of internal tissues. Significant correlations were observed between the variables obtained with the radiographic analysis and seed physiological characterization tests. The use of techniques to analyze seed radiographs and seedling images allows access to information on the physical and physiological integrity of S. siamea seeds.

Abstract High-density polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with cellulose from rice husk (RH) were prepared and studied. The RH biomass was submitted to acid extraction and bleaching process and then analyzed for its cellulose extraction efficiency by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). After that, the RH cellulose (RHC) was incorpored to the HDPE matrix by melt blending with different filler contents (5, 10 and 15 wt%), and then characterized in terms of mechanical properties and morphology. The RHC incorporation in the HDPE matrix resulted in an increase in elastic modulus regardless the filler content added; also, the impact resistance was maintained for RHC contents up to 10%. The morphological analysis of the composites showed that the cellulose was well dispersed in the matrix, which contributed to the improvement of the final rigidity of these materials, indicating the feasibility of incorporating this residue in the production of HDPE composites.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify the association of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics with the self-esteem of stomized persons. This is a cross-sectional study, with an exploratory and analytical approach and sampling for convenience developed at the Centro de Reabilitação e Habilitação do Rio Grande do Norte, in the city of Natal. Two instruments were used to collect data: the first one was adapted based on the one developed by Silva (2013) with questions regarding sociodemographic and clinical aspects of the patients; and the second was the Rosenberg's/UNIFESP-EPM Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), with content regarding the feelings of respect and acceptance of oneself. Concerning the sociodemographic characteristics, there was a predominance of males (62.2%), with education until the elementary school (71.1%); and regarding the clinical aspects, there was a predominance of people without comorbidities (54.4%) and colostomized patients (80.0%). In relation to the association of self-esteem with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, the statistical significance was only obtained with schooling (p = 0.007), although other aspects presented close results, such as income (p = 0.091) and comorbidities (p = 0.197). Therefore, it was found that there was a statistically significant association of self-esteem with schooling, although the other variables are also related to self-esteem. Health care professionals should consider these aspects in the planning of stomatal care, with an emphasis on the schooling level, which influences the understanding of the health condition itself, as well as the access to the available services, providing the necessary care and guidance for the attainment of a satisfactory self-esteem.

RESUMEN En el presente estudio se busca verificar la asociación de las características sociodemográficas y clínicas con la autoestima de las personas ostomizadas. Se trata de un estudio transversal, exploratorio y analítico con muestreo por conveniencia desarrollado en el Centro de Rehabilitación y Habilitaçión de Rio Grande do Norte, en el municipio de Natal. Para la recogida de datos se utilizaron dos instrumentos: uno adaptado en base al desarrollado por Silva (2013) con cuestiones referentes a aspectos sociodemográficos y clínicos; y la Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg / UNIFESP-EPM (RSES), con contenido relativo a los sentimientos de respeto y aceptación de sí mismo. Con relación a las características sociodemográficas, predominaron el sexo masculino (62,2%), con enseñanza primaria (71,1%); y, entre los aspectos clínicos, personas sin comorbilidades (54,4%) y pacientes con colostomía (80,0%). En cuanto a la asociación de la autoestima con características sociodemográficas y clínicas, sólo se obtuvo significancia estadística con escolaridad (p = 0,007), aunque otros aspectos presentaron resultados cercanos, tales como ingreso (p = 0,091) y presencia de comorbilidades (p = 0,197). Por lo tanto, se constató que sólo hubo asociación estadística significante de autoestima con escolaridad, aunque las otras variables también están relacionadas a la autoestima. Los profesionales de la salud deben considerar estos aspectos para la atención al ostomizado, con énfasis en la escolaridad, porque influye en el entendimiento sobre la condición de la salud, y el acceso a los servicios disponibles, proporcionando cuidados y orientaciones para conseguir una autoestima satisfactoria.

RESUMO Buscou-se neste estudo verificar a associação das características sociodemográficas e clínicas com a autoestima das pessoas estomizadas. Trata-se de estudo transversal, com abordagem exploratória e analítica e amostragem por conveniência, desenvolvido no Centro de Reabilitação e Habilitação do Rio Grande do Norte, no município de Natal. Para a coleta de dados foram utilizados dois instrumentos: o primeiro foi adaptado com base no desenvolvido por Silva (2013) com questões referentes a aspectos sociodemográficos e clínicos dos pacientes; e o segundo foi a Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg/ UNIFESP-EPM (RSES), com conteúdo relativo aos sentimentos de respeito e aceitação de si próprio. Referente às características sociodemográficas, houve predominância do sexo masculino (62,2%), com escolaridade até o ensino fundamental (71,1%); e nos aspectos clínicos, houve o predomínio de pessoas sem comorbidades (54,4%) e colostomizados (80,0%). Em relação à associação da autoestima com as características sociodemográficas e clínicas, obteve-se significância estatística apenas com a escolaridade (p=0,007), embora outros aspectos tenham apresentado resultados próximos, como a renda (p=0,091) e comorbidades (p=0,197). Portanto, constatou-se que houve associação estatística significante da autoestima apenas com a escolaridade, embora as outras variáveis também estejam relacionadas à autoestima. Os profissionais de saúde devem considerar esses aspectos para o planejamento da assistência ao estomizado, com ênfase no grau de instrução, o qual influencia no entendimento sobre a própria condição de saúde, bem como o acesso aos serviços disponíveis, proporcionando os cuidados e orientações necessárias para o alcance de uma autoestima satisfatória.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo empregar resíduos agroindustriais, especificamente fibras celulósicas extraídas de talos de casca de banana, para a obtenção de acetato de celulose. Tal produto por sua vez, foi utilizado como matriz em um compósito antimicrobiano para uso em embalagens de alimentos, constituído de acetato de celulose e partículas de prata. As referidas partículas foram produzidas por meio de síntese hidrotérmica assistida por micro-ondas a partir da redução do nitrato de prata, utilizando o citrato trisódico. As partículas de prata apresentaram um diâmetro médio de 433,6 nm. O compósito obtido foi caracterizado por microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV), testes de resistência à tração, análise termogravimétrica e espectroscopia no infravermelho por transformada de Fourrier (FTIR) e no UV-visível. Os resultados mostraram uma tensão de ruptura de aproximadamente 43 MPa, 25% maior que a apresentada por polímeros comerciais sem a adição de cargas. Além disto, obteve-se propriedades bactericidas com relação as bactérias Staphylococcus aureus e Escherichia coli, quando em contato direto com o filme formado pelo compósito.

ABSTRACT The present work had the objective to use agroindustrial residues, specifically cellulosic fibers from banana peel stalks, to obtain cellulose acetate. This product, in turn, was used as a matrix in an antimicrobial composite for food packaging, consisting of cellulose acetate and silver particles. The silver particles were produced by microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis from the reduction of silver nitrate using trisodium cit-rate. The obtained particles had a mean diameter of 433.6 nm. The composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), tensile strength test, thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier trans-form infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-visible spectroscopy. The results showed a fracture strain 25% greater than the commercial polymers without the addition of fillers, achieving about 43 MPa. In addition, bactericidal properties were obtained in relation to the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli when in direct contact with the composite film formed.
