ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in the biochemical parameters of feedlot lambs fed with high concentrations of crude glycerin (GC). Forty crossbred lambs (Dorper × Santa Inês), non-castrated, weighing 21.7±2.7kg and 90 days old, were randomly assigned to four treatments (0, 10, 20, and 30% GC in the diet). To evaluate the biochemical parameters, blood samples (pre-prandial and 4 h after morning feeding) were collected on the first day and the day before slaughter, in each treatment. The high-density lipoprotein was linearly decreased (P<0.0001) when GC concentrations were increased in the diet. Alkaline phosphatase was quadratically affected by treatments (P=0.05), with greater values observed in blood from animals fed intermediate concentrations of CG, and gamma-glutamyl transferase was linearly increased (P=0.008). The blood urea was quadratically affected by treatments with lower values observed in blood from animals fed intermediate concentrations of CG. In conclusion, the replacement of up to 30% (based on dry matter) of corn grain by crude glycerin, in diets for feedlot finishing lambs, does not compromise the health status of these animals.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as alterações nos parâmetros bioquímicos de cordeiros confinados, alimentados com elevadas concentrações de glicerina bruta (GC). Quarenta cordeiros mestiços (Dorper × Santa Inês), não castrados, com 21,7±2,7kg de peso e 90 dias de idade, foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em quatro tratamentos (0, 10, 20 e 30% de GC na dieta). Para avaliar os parâmetros bioquímicos, amostras de sangue (pré-prandial e 4h após a alimentação matinal) foram coletadas no primeiro dia e no dia anterior ao abate, em cada tratamento. A lipoproteína de alta densidade no sangue diminuiu linearmente (P<0,0001) quando as concentrações de GC foram aumentadas. A fosfatase alcalina foi afetada quadraticamente pelos tratamentos (P=0,05), com valores maiores observados no sangue de animais alimentados com concentrações intermediárias de GC, e a gamaglutamiltransferase aumentou linearmente (P=0,008). A ureia sanguínea foi afetada de forma quadrática pelos tratamentos, com valores menores observados no sangue de animais alimentados com concentrações intermediárias de GC. Em conclusão, a substituição de até 30% (com base na matéria seca) do grão de milho por glicerina bruta, em dietas para cordeiros em terminação em confinamento, não compromete o estado de saúde desses animais.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as características reprodutivas dos grupos genéticos AquaAmérica não endogâmicos e endogâmicos, GIFT e AquaAmérica × GIFT. Foram utilizados seis peixes de cada grupo genético (duas fêmeas:um macho). As fêmeas foram examinadas quanto à presença de ovos na boca a cada quatro dias, durante 12 semanas. A reprodução ocorreu em todos os grupos genéticos (GIFT: 100%; AquaAmérica não endogâmica e AquaAmérica × GIFT: 75%; AquaAmérica endogâmica: 50%). Peso e comprimento padrão de fêmea, peso total de desova, fecundidade absoluta, fecundidade relativa, índice de desova e taxa de eclosão não diferiram significativamente entre os grupos genéticos. Entretanto, a variedade não endogâmica da AquaAmérica apresentou valores mais baixos (P<0,05) para diâmetro do ovo (2,4mm) e peso do ovo (4,2mg) e maiores valores (P<0,05) para número relativo de ovos (247,6 ovos/g de ovo ) que GIFT (diâmetro do ovo: 2,8mm; peso do ovo: 5,7mg; número relativo de ovos: 175,4 ovos/g de ovo) e AquaAmérica × GIFT (diâmetro do ovo: 2,8mm; peso do ovo: 5,9mg; número relativo de ovos: 168,8 ovos/g de ovo). Em conclusão, a variedade AquaAmérica não endogâmica produz ovos menores e mais leves, mas um número relativo maior de ovos que a variedade GIFT e o cruzamento AquaAmérica × GIFT; a consanguinidade afeta negativamente a taxa de desova.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the reproductive traits of the non-inbred and inbred AquaAmérica, GIFT and AquaAmérica × GIFTgenetic groups. Six fish from each genetic group were used (2 females:1 male). Females were examined for the presence of eggs in their mouth at every four days, for 12 weeks. Reproduction occurred in all genetic groups (GIFT: 100%; non-inbred AquaAmérica and AquaAmérica ×GIFT: 75%; inbred AquaAmérica: 50%). Female weight, female standard length, total spawning weight, absolute fecundity, relative fecundity, spawn index and hatching rate did not differ significantly between the genetic groups. However, the non-inbred AquaAmérica variety showed lower values (P<0.05) for egg diameter (2.4mm) and egg weight (4.2mg) and higher values (P<0.05) for relative number of eggs (247.6 eggs/g of egg) than GIFT (egg diameter: 2.8mm; egg weight: 5.7mg; relative number of eggs: 175.4 eggs/g of egg) and AquaAmérica ×GIFT (egg diameter: 2.8mm; egg weight: 5.9mg; relative number of eggs: 168.8 eggs/g of egg). In conclusion, the non-inbred AquaAmérica variety produces smaller, lighter eggs but a higher relative number of eggs than the GIFT variety and the AquaAmérica ×GIFT cross; and inbreeding negatively affects spawning rate.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve por objetivo relatar um caso de linfoma leucemizado em um felino coinfectado com os vírus da imunodeficiência felina (FIV) e o da leucemia felina (FeLV). Foram realizados exames de hemograma, contagem de reticulócitos, mielograma, bioquímica, teste de imunocromatografia para FIV e FeLV, imunofluorescência indireta (IFA) para FeLV, radiografia torácica e citologia renal. Esse último exame revelou um linfoma extranodal. Foi determinante para a conclusão diagnóstica a associação dos sinais clínicos corroborados com a infiltração de elevada quantidade de células linfoblásticas na medula óssea, exibindo critérios citomorfológicos de malignidade, como mitoses atípicas, relacionadas à presença de corpúsculos linfoglandulares e material hematopoiético inter-relacionado. O linfoma é uma neoplasia relativamente comum em felinos, entretanto, a apresentação leucemizada é rara, podendo representar um desafio diagnóstico clínico, o que torna fundamental a inclusão da citologia medular na prática clínica dessa espécie.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed to report a case of lymphoma in leukemic phase in feline coinfected with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Blood counts, reticulocyte counts, bone marrow avaluation, biochemistry, immunochromatography assay for FIV and FeLV, indirect immunofluorescence (IFA) for FeLV, thoracic radiography and renal citology were performed. This last examination revealed extranodal lymphoma. The association of the clinical signs with the infiltration of a high number of lymphoblastic cells in the bone marrow with cytomorphological criteria of malignancy, atypical mitoses, lymphoglandular corpuscles and hematopoietic material were determinant for the diagnostic conclusion. Lymphoma is a relatively common neoplasm in felines, however the leukemic phase is rare and may represent a clinical diagnostic challenge, making it essential to include bone marrow cytology in the clinical practice of this species.

RESUMO Este trabalho analisa o efeito larvicida do óleo Zingiber officinale Roscoe contra larvas em terceiro estágio do mosquito Aedes aegypti. Extraiu-se quantitativamente o óleo essencial por hidrodestilação e calculou-se a CL50 do óleo, a partir dos métodos de Reed-Muench e Pizzi, respectivamente. O óleo essencial obteve CL50 de 76,07 (±2,24) μg mL-1 e rendimento de 0,52% m/v. Os resultados indicam que o óleo essencial avaliado é composto por substâncias que propiciam efeito larvicida contra Aedes aegypti.

ABSTRACT This study analyzes the larvicidal effect of the oil of Zingiber officinale Roscoe against larvae in third stage of the mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus 1792). The essential oil was extracted quantitatively by hydrodistillation and we calculated the oil’s LC50 from Reed-Muench (1938) and Pizzi (1950) methods, respectively. The essential oil obtained LC50 of 76.07 (±2.24) ug mL-1, and yield of 0.52% m/v. The results indicate that the essential oil assessed has substances that provide larvicidal effect against Aedes aegypti.

Durante o inverno austral, é comum o aparecimento do pinguim-de-Magalhães (Spheniscus magellanicus) no litoral sul do Brasil. A poluição por petróleo constitui a maior causa de morte dessas aves. O acompanhamento do peso e de variáveis sanguíneas é importante para a tomada de decisões durante a reabilitação e liberação desses animais. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a relação entre a sobrevivência dos pinguins durante a reabilitação e os valores de hematócrito (Ht), proteínas plasmáticas totais (PPT) e peso corpóreo (PC) das aves recebidas no Centro de Recuperação de Animais Marinhos entre 2006 e 2009. As análises ocorreram semanalmente, e os pinguins foram classificados em função do desfecho do processo de reabilitação, quando 101 espécimes foram reabilitados e liberados e 67 foram a óbito. Animais liberados apresentaram queda no Ht na segunda e terceira semanas (41±6% e 40±5%, respectivamente), seguida de recuperação dos valores na quarta e quinta semanas (41±4% e 43±4%, respectivamente). Os níveis de PPT aumentaram progressivamente ao longo das coletas, estabilizando na quarta semana em 7,3±0,8g/dL. Em contrapartida, animais que foram a óbito, apesar de seguirem a mesma resposta para as PPT, não apresentaram diferença significativa do Ht, entre as coletas, e demonstraram tendência à perda de PC nas últimas semanas de reabilitação. As curvas de PC e Ht foram consideradas indicadoras potenciais de prognóstico durante a reabilitação dos pinguins. Animais que chegaram ao centro de recuperação com PC, Ht e PPT acima de 2.700g, 45% e 5,6g/dL, respectivamente, apresentaram maior chance de recuperação, fazendo desses parâmetros pontos críticos na tomada de decisão quanto ao tratamento a ser conduzido durante a reabilitação.

During the austral winter the appearance of the Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is common on the southern coast of Brazil. The oil pollution constitutes a major cause of death of these birds. The monitoring of the weight and blood variables is important to make decisions during the rehabilitation and release of these animals. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the penguins' survival during rehabilitation and the values of hematocrit (Hct), total plasma protein (TPP) and body weight (BW) of the birds received at Centro de Recuperação de Animais Marinhos (Recovery Centre for Sea Animals) between 2006 and 2009. The analysis took place weekly, and penguins were classified according to the outcome of the rehabilitation process, when 101 specimens were rehabilitated and released, and 67 died. Released animals showed a decrease in the Hct in the second and third weeks (41±6% and 40±5% respectively) followed by recovery of the values in the fourth and fifth week (41±4% and 43±4% respectively). TPP levels increased steadily over the collections, stabilizing at 7.3±0.8g/dL in the fourth week. On the other hand, animals that died, although following the same response for TPP, showed no significant difference in Hct between collections, and showed a tendency for loss of BW in the last weeks of rehabilitation. The curves of BW and Hct during rehabilitation were considered a potential prognostic indicator of penguins in rehabilitation. Animals that arrived at the recovery centre with BW, Hct and TPP above 2.700g, 45% and 5.6 g / dL, respectively, have a greater chance of recovery, making these parameters crucial points in decision making regarding the treatment to be conducted during rehabilitation.

O bumblefoot ou pododermatite está entre as afecções de maior morbidade em pinguins-de-magalhães, podendo evoluir para septicemia e óbito. Portanto, o presente estudo objetivou relacionar as principais espécies bacterianas envolvidas na afecção, bem como o perfil de susceptibilidade in vitro destes microrganismos frente a antimicrobianos de uso rotineiro em medicina veterinária. Durante o período de dois anos, foi realizada colheita de material in vivo de 200 coxins plantares (n=100 animais) para análise microbiológica e testes de susceptibilidade in vitro frente aos antibióticos enrofloxacina, estreptomicina, penicilina e cefalosporina. Bactérias foram identificadas tanto como parte da microbiota permanente quanto da transitória, bem como estiveram associadas a 100% dos casos de pododermatite. Os gêneros mais prevalentes foram Staphylococcus e Corynebacterium. Os antibiogramas de todas as bactérias isoladas resultaram em maior sensibilidade das cepas frente à cefalosporina, seguida de enrofloxacina, estreptomicina e penicilina.

The bumblefoot or pododermatitis is among the diseases with the highest morbidity in Magellanic penguins, sometimes evolving to septicemia and death. Therefore, this study aimed to relate the main species involved in the disorder, as well as the in vitro susceptibility profile of the microorganisms against routine antimicrobial usage in Veterinary Medicine. During two years in vivo material was harvested from 200 footpads (n=100 animals) for microbiological analysis and in vitro susceptibility tests against the Antibiotic enrofloxacin, streptomycin, penicillin and cephalosporin. Bacteria have been identified both as part of permanent and transient microbiota, also being associated to 100% of the pododermatitis cases. The most prevalent genus were Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium. The antibiograms of all the isolated bacteria resulted in greater susceptibility of the strains facing cephalosporin, followed by enrofloxacin, streptomycin and penicillin.

Avaliou-se a ação in loco da clorexidina-cetrimida no controle de Aspergillus spp., considerando-se a influência de fatores climáticos e populacionais, em um centro de recuperação de animais marinhos. Durante dois anos, realizaram-se colheitas de amostras de ar por meio da técnica de sedimentação, com implantação no segundo ano de um programa de desinfecção com clorexidina-cetrimida. Os resultados do isolamento fúngico nos dois anos foram comparados estatisticamente pelo programa Epinfo 8.0. Demonstrou-se que o isolamento de Aspergillus spp. não apresentou relação significativa com fatores climáticos e populacionais e que a diminuição da concentração de conídios de Aspergillus spp. do ambiente ocorreu devido ao programa eficaz de desinfecção com a clorexidina-cetrimida.

The study evaluated the in loco activity of chlorexidine-cetrimide for environmental control of Aspergillus spp. considering the climatic influence and population variations, in a recuperation center of marine animals. Samples of air were collected throughout two years by the sediment method, and the disinfection program was established in the second year. Data collected during the two years were statistically compared by Epinfo 8.0. program. It was demonstrated that both population and climate had no influence on the fungal isolation, and the disinfection program with chlorexidine-cetrimide was considered effective in the reduction of conidia Aspergillus concentration indoor.

Análises de sensibilidade da margem bruta foram realizadas com dados de desempenho e custos de 149 animais confinados por períodos variáveis de acordo com acabamento de carcaça dos grupos genéticos: Nelore sobreano, Nelore desmamado, ½ Valdostana ½ Nelore, ½ Simental ½ Nelore, ½ Braford ½ Brangus, ½ Braford ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore, Brangus, ½ Canchim ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore e ½ Canchim ¼ Simental ¼ Nelore. Sensibilidade da margem bruta foi realizada com variações nos preços de venda da carne e de compra do milho, soja, silagem de milho e boi magro, mantendo-se os demais preços fixos. Com o preço da carne a 0,99 US$/kg, o Nelore sobreano foi mais eficiente nas variações do milho, soja e silagem de milho; Brangus foi mais eficiente nas variações do preço de compra do boi. Com preço da carne a 1,27 US$/kg, a margem bruta foi positiva para todos grupos genéticos nas variações do milho, soja e silagem de milho, exceto Nelore desmamado. Na variação de preços de compra do boi, apenas Brangus apresentou margem bruta positiva. A margem bruta foi mais sensível às variações no preço de compra dos animais do que no preço de venda da carne.

Gross margin sensitivity analyses based on costs and feedlot performances of 149 steers of different genetic groups were performed. The genetic groups consisted of yearling Nellore, weaned Nellore, ½ Valdostana ½ Nellore, ½ Simmental ½ Nellore, ½ Braford ½ Brangus,½ Braford ¼ Angus ¼ Nellore, Brangus, ½ Canchim ¼ Angus ¼ Nellore and ½ Canchim ¼ Simmental ¼ Nellore. The gross margin sensitivity analyses were performed considering fluctuation of beef selling price, and buying price fluctuations of corn, soybean, corn silage and steers, maintaining all the remained costs fixed. For beef selling price of .99 US$/kg yearling Nellore was more efficient for fluctuation prices of corn and soybean, corn silage and the genetic group Brangus was more efficient for fluctuation of beef buying prices. For beef selling price of 1.27 US$/kg, the gross margin was positive for all genetic group, except the weaned Nellore for corn, soybean and corn silage buying price fluctuations; Brangus group showed positive gross margin for all animal buying price fluctuations. The animal gross margin showed more sensitivity to the buying price fluctuations in comparison to the animal selling price fluctuations.

O desempenho de 149 animais, machos inteiros, confinados por períodos variáveis de acordo com acabamento de carcaça, foi utilizado para avaliar a eficiência econômica dos grupos genéticos Nelore sobreano, Nelore desmamado, ½ Valdostana ½ Nelore, ½ Simental ½ Nelore, ½ Braford ½ Brangus, ½ Braford ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore, Brangus, ½ Canchim ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore e ½ Canchim ¼ Simental ¼ Nelore. O custo operacional variável, o custo por quilograma de carne produzida e a margem bruta foram analisados pelo método dos quadrados mínimos ordinários, mediante modelo estatístico que incluiu o efeito do grupo genético e o peso inicial como covariável, comparando-se as médias pelo teste Duncan (P<0,05). Os maiores custos operacionais variáveis no período, em US$, foram do ½ Canchim ¼ Simental ¼ Nelore (160,8), Nelore desmamado (158,7) e ½ Canchim ¼ Angus ¼ Nelore (155,1). Os menores custos por quilograma de carne, em US$, foram do Nelore sobreano (0,79) e Brangus (0,82). A maior margem bruta, em US$, foi obtida pelo grupo genético Nelore sobreano (94,6), seguida do Brangus (71,5) e do ½ Simental ½ Nelore (46,6). Os grupos genéticos mais pesados no início do confinamento e que permaneceram menos tempo confinados apresentaram maior margem bruta.

Data on feedlot performance of 149 steers were used to evaluate the economic efficiency of yearling Nellore, weaned Nellore, ½ Valdostana ½ Nellore, ½ Simmental ½ Nellore, ½ Braford ½ Brangus, ½ Braford ¼ Angus ¼ Nellore, Brangus, ½ Canchim ¼ Angus ¼ Nellore and ½ Canchim ¼ Simmental ¼ Nellore. Variable operational costs, kg of meat costs, and gross margin income were analyzed by ordinary least squares procedure including the effects of genetic groups and initial weight in the feedlot as a covariate. The means were compared by Duncan test (P<.05). The largest variable operational costs in the period, in US$, were observed for ½ Canchim ¼ Simmental ¼ Nellore (160.8), weaned Nellore (158.7) and ½ Canchim ¼ Angus ¼ Nellore (155.1). The lowest kg of meat costs, in US$, were observed for yearling Nellore (0.79) and Brangus (0.82). The highest gross margin was obtained for yearling Nellore (94.6), followed by Brangus (71.5) and ½ Simmental ½ Nellore (46.6) The heaviest genetic groups in the beginning of the feed lot were confined for shorter periods and had the largest gross margins.

Um grande número de publicações tem focalizado o aspecto da contaminação do material particulado atmosférico em regiões temperadas. Entretanto pouco se conhece sobre o assunto nos países tropicais, principalmente aqueles em desenvolvimento. Esse trabalho faz uma caracterização do material particulado atmosférico coletado junto com a chuva, em dois locais no litoral do Estado do Rio de Janeiro: o primeiro em Sepetiba sujeito a elevada deposição atmosférica de metais devido à atividades industriais, e o segundo (Iguaba na Região dos Lagos) sujeito apenas a intensa atividade turística e de urbanização. O material particulado, obtido da filtração de amostras de chuva, foi analisado por ativação de nêutrons. Os resultados mostram três importantes constatações: 1) o fator de enriquecimento separa os elementos em dois grupos, um com origem na crosta e outro antropogênico; 2) a grande uniformidade na deposição da maioria dos elementos; e 3) o enriquecimento de elementos no particulado atmosférico pode constituir-se numa fonte importante de contaminantes para solos, sedimentos e para o ambiente marinho.

Airborne contamination has been of concern for a number of scientist in temperate regions. In the tropics, a very small amount of data is available. In this work, rain water particulate material was monitored in two sites in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil): the first (Sepetiba), subjected to high inputs of metals from industrial activities and the second (Iguaba), subjected to very mild contamination. Particulate material was obtained by filtration of rain water samples. The filters were analysed by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The results show three important features: 1) the element enrichment patterns could be split into two groups, crustal and anthropogenic derived; 2) uniformity of element loads in rain water particles is observed; 3) enrichment of certain trace elements in airborne particles is probably an important source of contaminants to soils, sediments and the marine environment.
