ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the litter production of different genotypes of Eucalyptus. An experiment was conducted in 43-month-old stands in the municipality of São Gabriel, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. For each genotype, a plot of 599.200 m was set. Fifteen samples were collected at random in each plot. The accumulated litter production ranged from 2.03 to 4.70 Mg ha-1. This number is the lowest value found in the Eucalyptus dunnii stands and the highest value in the hybrid Eucalyptus urograndis stands. The leaf fraction reached, on average, between 60% and 91% of the total litter. The various genotypes had differences in the litter deposited onto the soil top.

RESUMEN Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la producción de hojarasca de diferentes genotipos de eucalipto. Se realizó un experimento en stands de 43 meses en el municipio de São Gabriel, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Para cada genotipo, se estableció una parcela de 599.200 m. Quince muestras fueron recolectadas al azar en cada parcela. La producción de hojarasca acumulada varió de 2.03 a 4.70 Mg har 1 . Este es el valor más bajo encontrado en los rodales de Eucalyptus dunnii y el valor más alto en los rodales híbridos de Eucalyptus urograndis. La fracción foliar alcanzó en promedio entre 60% y 91% del total de la hojarasca. Los diversos genotipos tuvieron diferencias en la basura depositada sobre la superficie del suelo.

Resumo O manejo intensivo de povoamentos florestais pode aumentar a produção de biomassa, bem como aumentar a remoção de nutrientes do local. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi simular diferentes intensidades de colheita e calcular a eficiência de utilização de nutrientes para Eucalyptus urograndis em diferentes tipos de solo. O estudo foi realizado em um plantio do híbrido E. urograndis de sete anos de idade, no município de Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, Brasil. O local de estudo incluiu duas subáreas com solo arenoso e solo argiloso (Cambissolo Háplico e Latossolo Vermelho, respectivamente). Com os dados de estoque de biomassa e nutrientes foi simulada a remoção de nutrientes em cinco cenários de colheita diferentes. A eficiência de utilização de nutrientes foi obtida a partir da relação entre a quantidade de biomassa e os nutrientes de cada componente da árvore. A colheita da árvore inteira resultou na retirada de aproximadamente 61% dos nutrientes do local em solo arenoso, enquanto em solo argiloso, 57% dos nutrientes foram removidos. Com a colheita apenas da madeira do fuste comercial, apenas 22% dos nutrientes foram retirados do solo arenoso e 21% do solo argiloso. A madeira do caule foi o componente que apresentou os maiores valores da eficiência de utilização de nutrientes para todos os nutrientes analisados. Para alcançar a sustentabilidade nutricional dos povoamentos de E. urograndis, o melhor sistema de colheita envolve a remoção apenas da madeira do tronco comercial. Para a produção de madeira, os solos arenosos apresentam maior eficiência biológica de cálcio e magnésio quando comparados aos solos argilosos.

Abstract Intensive management of forest stands can increase biomass production, as well as increase the removal of nutrients from the site. This study therefore sought to simulate different harvest intensities and to calculate the nutrient-use efficiency of Eucalyptus urograndis in different types of soil. The study was carried out in a plantation of seven-year-old hybrid E. urograndis in the city of Telêmaco Borba, Paraná, Brazil. The study site included two sub areas with sandy soil and clayey soil (Cambisols Inceptisol and Ferralsols Oxisols, respectively). Using biomass and nutrients stock data, nutrient removal was simulated under five different harvest scenarios. Nutrient-use efficiency was obtained from the relation between the amount of biomass and nutrients of each tree component. Harvesting the whole tree resulted in the removal of approximately 61% of the nutrients from the site in sandy soil, while in clayey soil 57% of the nutrients were removed. With harvesting of only the commercial stemwood, only 22% of the nutrients were removed from the sandy soil, and 21% from the clayey soil. Stemwood was the component that had the highest nutrient-use efficiency values for all the analyzed nutrients. In conclusion, to achieve nutritional sustainability of E. urograndis stands, the best harvesting system involves the removal of only commercial stemwood. For the production of stemwood, sandy soils have a greater biological efficiency of calcium and magnesium when compared to clayey soil.

Resumo A produtividade de genótipos superiores em plantações florestais está em função da oferta, captura e eficiência de uso dos recursos. Nesse contexto, o conhecimento sobre a eficiência nutricional do Eucalyptus influencia agricultores e pesquisadores na tomada de decisões e no manejo de ecossistemas florestais. A pesquisa teve como objetivo estimar a eficiência no uso de nutrientes em genótipos de Eucalyptus plantados no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. Foram avaliados seis genótipos potenciais e as avaliações foram realizadas em povoamentos de 43 meses de idade. A eficiência do uso de nutrientes foi calculada usando a razão de biomassa e a quantidade de nutrientes para cada componente da biomassa. Os resultados aqui apresentados confirmam que existe sinergismo e antagonismo entre os nutrientes no nível da parte aérea nos genótipos de Eucalyptus. Para a madeira do fuste, E. saligna apresentou a melhor eficiência de utilização de N, P, K, S e Mn; e E. urophylla × E. globulus para Mg, B e Zn. As vias metabólicas controlam a produção de biomassa sintetizada por cada genótipo e as diferenças entre os grupos de genótipos foram baseadas na eficiência do uso de nutrientes nos componentes da biomassa. A madeira do caule foi o componente que apresentou maior eficiência de uso de nutrientes, enquanto as folhas apresentaram a menor eficiência de uso de nutrientes. Mas, além disso, nossas análises identificaram o quão diferente é cada genótipo de Eucalyptus e essas características podem ser usadas para alocação de clones de acordo com a fertilidade do solo.

Abstract Superior productivity of genotypes in forest plantations depends on the supply, capture and use-efficiency of resources. In this context, knowledge regarding the nutritional efficiency of Eucalyptus influences farmers and researchers in decision-making and in the management of forest ecosystems. The aim of this research was to estimate nutrient-use efficiency in Eucalyptus genotypes planted in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. We evaluated six potential genotypes at 43-month-old stands. Nutrient-use efficiency was calculated using the ratio of biomass and the amount of nutrients for each component of the biomass. Results here presented confirmed that there is synergism and antagonism between nutrients at the shoot level in the Eucalyptus genotypes. For stemwood, E. saligna showed the best utilization efficiency of N, P, K, S, and Mn; and E. urophylla × E. globulus for Mg, B, and Zn. Metabolic pathways control the production of biomass synthesized by each genotype and the differences between genotypes groups were on the basis of their nutrient-use efficiency in the biomass components. Stemwood was the component that showed the highest nutrient-use efficiency, while leaves presented the lowest nutrient-use efficiency. Additionally, our analyses identified how different each Eucalyptus genotype is and these traits may be used for clone allocation according to soil fertility.

Resumo Sabendo que a deposição atmosférica é a primeira fonte de entrada de nutrientes nos ecossistemas florestais e que a partição de precipitação serve como fonte nutricional principalmente quando há interação com o dossel florestal, o objetivo do presente estudo foi quantificar o aporte de nutrientes na precipitação incidente, precipitação interna e escoamento pelo tronco em um povoamento de Eucalyptus urophylla com exclusão parcial (E) e sem exclusão parcial (WE) da precipitação interna. O experimento está localizado no nordeste do estado do Paraná-Brasil, no município de Telêmaco Borba. O sistema de exclusão parcial de precipitação (E) é formado por um sistema de calhas que conduzem 30% da precipitação interna para fora do experimento. O aporte de nutrientes pela precipitação incidente foi de 55.7 kg ha-1 ano-1, enquanto que a soma dos mesmos na precipitação interna e escoamento pelo tronco foram de 39.8 kg ha-1 ano-1 no tratamento com exclusão (E) e de 64.1 kg ha-1 ano-1 no tratamento sem exclusão (WE). A interação com o dossel florestal enriquece com nutrientes especialmente com os elementos potássio e cloro devido a lixiviação dos tecidos vegetais. A redução do regime hídrico no tratamento com exclusão parcial da precipitação (E) reduziu de forma representativa a entrada de nutrientes. Embora o escoamento pelo tronco represente em média apenas 2.6% do volume de água, ele é responsável por 6.7% da quantidade de nutrientes em relação à precipitação. Portanto, o mesmo não pode ser negligenciado no balanço da ciclagem de nutrientes. Com uma rotação de 7 anos a aplicação de importantes quantidades de fertilizantes podem ser evitados considerando as entradas de 449 e 277 kg ha-1 ano-1.

Abstract Given that atmospheric deposition is the first source of nutrient input into forest ecosystems, and that the precipitation partition serves as a nutritional source mainly when there is an interaction with the forest canopy, the objective of the present study was to quantify the nutrients input into rainfall, throughfall and stemflow in Eucalyptus urophylla stands with partial exclusion (E) and without exclusion (WE) of throughfall. The experiment was conducted in the northeast of the state of Paraná-Brazil, in the municipality of Telêmaco Borba. The partial precipitation exclusion system (E) is formed by a system of gutters that conduct 30% of throughfall out of the experiment. The nutrient input in rainfall was 55.7 kg ha-1 yr-1, while the sum of throughfall and stemflow was 64.1 kg ha-1 yr-1 in treatment (WE) and 39.8 kg ha-1 yr-1 in treatment (E). Interaction with the canopy of the trees enriched the rainfall with nutrients, mainly the elements potassium and chlorine, due to leaching of the vegetal tissues. The reduction of the water treatment system in partial exclusion of precipitation (E) reduced representative nutrient input. Although stemflow represents on average only 2.6% of the water volume, it is responsible for 6.7% of the amount of nutrients in relation to precipitation. Therefore, stemflow cannot be neglected in the balance of nutrient cycling. With a rotation of 7 years, the application of significant amounts of fertilizers can be avoided, considering the inputs of 449 and 277 kg ha-1year-1.

Resumo O comportamento hidrológico em microbacias reflorestadas é diferenciado de outras formas de cobertura. A variação pode estar relacionada tanto à aspectos intrínsecos à espécie, densidade de plantio, maturidade fisiológica, sistema de manejo e às condições climáticas. Periodicamente anomalias climáticas como o caso do La Ninã são constatadas e essas, são responsáveis pela alteração do regime pluviométrico e consequentemente geram déficits hídricos na região sul do Brasil. O déficit hídrico é responsável pela redução do crescimento e da produtividade para o gênero Eucalyptus, além de provocar alterações no comportamento hidrológico em bacias hidrográficas reflorestadas. Por conta disso, o objetivo do estudo foi comparar a partição da precipitação pluviométrica em precipitação interna, escoamento pelo tronco e interceptação pela copa das árvores de eucalipto submetidas ou não à exclusão parcial da precipitação. Foram instalados 3 coletores de precipitação em área aberta, e no interior do povoamento, para cada tratamento de exclusão de chuva, 9 coletores de precipitação interna e 9 coletores de escoamento pelo tronco foram instalados. Ao longo de 12 meses, quinzenalmente, o volume dos coletores era aferido. A precipitação quantificada foi de 1627 mm ao longo de um ano. No tratamento sem exclusão, 84.8, 2.9 e 12.3% referiram-se à precipitação interna, escoamento pelo tronco e interceptação pela copa respectivamente, enquanto que no tratamento com exclusão da precipitação 80.6, 2.3 e 17.2% referiram-se à precipitação interna, escoamento pelo tronco e interceptação. Os ajustes da regressão para precipitação interna e escoamento pelo tronco mostraram bons coeficientes R2.

Abstract Hydrological behavior in reforested watersheds is different from that under other forms of cover. The variation may be related to aspects intrinsic to species, planting density, physiological maturity, management system and climatic conditions. Periodically, climatic anomalies such as the case of La Ninã are observed, and these are responsible for the alteration of the rainfall regime and consequently generate water deficits in the southern region of Brazil. Water deficit is responsible for reducing growth and productivity for the Eucalyptus genus, in addition to causing changes in hydrological behavior in reforested watersheds. Accordingly, this study compared the partition of rainfall in throughfall, stemflow and canopy interception of eucalyptus trees submitted or not to partial exclusion of precipitation. In the open field, 3 rainfall collectors were installed, and in the stand, for each rain exclusion treatment, 9 throughfall collectors and 9 stemflow collectors were installed. Every two weeks for 12 months, the volume of the collectors was measured. The quantified precipitation was 1627 mm over a year. In the treatment without exclusion, 84.8, 2.9 and 12.3% referred to throughfall, stemflow and canopy interception, respectively, while in the treatment excluding rainfall 80.6, 2.3 and 17.2% referred to throughfall, stemflow and canopy interception. The regression adjustments for throughfall and stemflow showed satisfactory R2 coefficients.

ABSTRACT The study of the nutrients removed with forest harvesting is presented as an essential fator favoring the sustainable use of forest stands. The research was carried out in an experimental area in Horto Florestal Terra Dura in the municipality of Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil, where six Eucalyptus clones were planted. Based on the nutrient stock of each biomass component, the simulation of nutrient removal through biomass harvesting was calculated for three scenarios: (1) harvesting of stemwood, (2) harvesting of stem-wood with stembark, and (3) harvesting of all aboveground biomass. In the first scenario, the highest amount of nutrients exported with biomass harvest occurred in the Eucalyptus hybrids E. urophylla x E. globulus (N, K, S, and Fe) and E. urophylla x E. grandis (Ca, B, Cu, and Zn). In the second scenario, the highest nutrient exportation occurred in E. benthamii (Provenance 1) (N, P, Ca, Mn, and B) and hybrid E. urophylla x E. globulus (K, S, and Fe). In the third scenario, the highest nutrient exportation occurred in E. benthamii (Provenance 1) (P, Ca, B, Mn, and Zn), E. grandis (Mg and Cu), and hybrid E. urophylla x E. globulus (N, K, S, and Fe). Harvesting of all aboveground biomass was the most aggressive scenario, showing the highest export of nutrients. However, for reducing the nutritional impact of biomass harvesting, the best scenario was the one in which only stemwood was harvested.

RESUMEN El estudio de los nutrientes extraídos con la cosecha forestal se presenta como un factor esencial que favorece el uso sostenible de las plantaciones forestales. La investigación se llevó a cabo en un área experimental en Horto Florestal Terra Dura en el municipio de Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brasil, donde se plantaron seis clones de eucalipto. Con base en el contenido de nutrientes de cada componente de biomasa, la simulación de la extracción de nutrientes por la recolección de biomasa se calculó para tres tratamientos: (1) cosecha de madera de tallo; (2) cosecha de madera con corteza de tallo; y (3) cosecha de toda la biomasa aérea. En el primer tratamiento, la mayor cantidad de nutrientes exportados con la cosecha de biomasa ocurrió en los híbridos de eucalipto E. urophylla x E. globulus (N, K, S y Fe) y E. urophylla x E. grandis (Ca, B, Cu y Zn). En el segundo tratamiento, la mayor exportación de nutrientes se produjo en E. benthamii (Procedencia 1) (N, P, Ca, Mn y B) y E. urophylla x E. globulus híbridos (K, S y Fe). En el tercer tratamiento, la mayor exportación de nutrientes ocurrió en E. benthamii (Procedencia 1) (P, Ca, B, Mn y Zn), E. grandis (Mg y Cu) y E. urophylla x E. globulus híbridos (N, K, S y Fe). La recolección de toda la biomasa aérea fue el escenario más agresivo, mostrando la mayor exportación de nutrientes. Sin embargo, para reducir el impacto nutricional de la recolección de biomasa, el mejor tratamiento fue aquel en el que solo se cosechaba madera de tallo.

Abstract This study aimed at quantifying the accumulation of litter in formative compartments (bark, branches, leaves, and miscellaneous) above the soil in a 23-year-old Eucalyptus grandis plantation, located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. We installed four parallel plots on the settlement lines, measuring 3.0 m × 6.0 m. In order for litter collection, we utilized a 25 cm × 25 cm iron frame and randomly collected 15 samples of each plot, totaling 60 samples. The burlap consisted predominantly of branches (39%) and miscellaneous (29%) fraction, followed by leaves (23%) and bark (6%). Such accumulation may be associated with the age of the Eucalyptus grandis, the density of the forest, and the stability achieved by the plantation.

Abstract Litterfall and nutrient cycling are essential processes for the forest diversity and productivity maintenance. This study aims to characterize the litterfall and evaluate if it has correlations with climatic variables in the Semideciduous Seasonal Forest on advanced succession stage, in Southern Brazil. During the 2007-2010 period, the litterfall was collected every month, sorted into leaves, twigs, and miscellaneous fractions. The litterfall amount average was 7.75 Mg ha-1 year-1 and leaves constituted the highest litterfall percentage (75.0%), followed by twigs (14.7%), and miscellaneous (10.3%). Higher leaf amounts were recorded in August and September. The minimum air temperature was negatively correlated with the leaves and twigs production, that is, the litterfall amount increases when the air temperature decreases. The litterfall amount corresponds to values expected to advanced successional stage of the forest typology studied. In Semideciduous Seasonal Forest in Southern Brazil, the thermal stress exerts influence on the litterfall amount.

Resumo A composição química da chuva é influenciada por fatores naturais ou antropogênicos, sendo a quantidade de nutrientes resultante da multiplicação de sua concentração pela quantidade precipitada. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar: a quantidade de nutrientes aportada pela precipitação no bioma Pampa, a variação sazonal da composição química da água da chuva, a origem dos nutrientes encontrados na água. Os coletores de precipitação foram instalados em área aberta e quinzenalmente, durante 2 anos, os volumes foram aferidos e as amostras analisadas quimicamente. A concentração de nutrientes na água da chuva aumentou no inverno, porém, devido às menores precipitações, a deposição total foi semelhante às demais estações do ano. A análise que utiliza o coeficiente de Pearson mostra correlação negativa entre volume de chuva e conteúdo de íons, indicando o efeito de diluição. A quantidade total de nutrientes na precipitação incidente durante o estudo foi de 72,7 kg ha-1, representando uma média de 36,3 kg ha-1 ano-1. Os íons Ca2+ e K+ são predominantemente de origem litólica, enquanto os íons SO4 2- e NO3- de origem antropogênica. O equilíbrio entre a soma dos cátions pela soma dos ânions mostrou-se unitário, indicando excelente validação dos dados. A entrada desses nutrientes ocorre gradualmente, evitando perdas excessivas, aumentando o estoque no solo.

Abstract The chemical composition of rainfall is influenced by natural or anthropogenic factors; the amount of nutrients deposited is increased by the amount of rainfall. This work sought to estimate the amount of nutrients deposited by precipitation in the Pampa biome, the seasonal variation of the chemical composition of rain water, and the origin of nutrients found in the water. Precipitation collectors were installed in the open area to measure precipitation volumes biweekly over 2 years, and the samples were chemically analyzed. Concentrations of nutrients in the rain water increased over winter; however, since there was less precipitation, the total deposition was similar to the other seasons. Correlation analysis using the Pearson coefficient showed a negative correlation between rain volume and ion contents, indicating a dilution effect. The total amount of nutrients from precipitation during the study was 72.7 kg ha-1, representing an average of 36.3 kg ha-1 year-1. The Ca2+ and K+ ions are predominantly of litholical origin, whereas the SO4 2- and NO3 - ions were of anthropogenic origin. The balance between the sum of cations and the sum of anions was shown to be unitary, indicating excellent data validation. The input of these nutrients occurs gradually, avoiding excessive losses, increasing the stock in the soil.

Resumo Este trabalho, realizado em um povoamento de Pinus taeda de 17 anos de idade no município de Cambará do Sul - RS, em Cambissolo Húmico alumínico típico, teve por objetivo estudar o padrão de alocação dos nutrientes ao longo do tronco e suas implicações para a amostragem na estimativa do estoque de nutrientes. Foram amostradas 18 árvores, distribuídas em 6 classes diamétricas, com coleta de amostras, de casca e madeira, nas seguintes alturas relativas (por cento da altura total): h0,1 (10%), h0,3 (30%), h0,5 (50%), h0,7 (70%) e h0,9 (90%). O padrão de alocação dos nutrientes ao longo do tronco foi estudado mediante comparação de médias e ajuste de equações de regressão, correlacionando concentração de nutrientes e a altura de coleta das amostras. Testaram-se diferentes estimadores da concentração de nutrientes: teor médio aritmético (TM), teor médio ponderado pelo diâmetro da secção (TMPD) e teor médio ponderado pela biomassa da secção (TMPB); tendo este como tratamento padrão. Com exceção de Mn e Ca na madeira, todos os nutrientes apresentaram maior teor na porção superior do tronco (h0,9), podendo ser para P 2,7 vezes superior na madeira e 5 vezes superior na casca, em relação a base do tronco (h0,1). O elemento Ca na madeira apresentou comportamento inverso, ou seja, maior teor na base do tronco (h0,1); enquanto Mn não diferiu estatisticamente entre os pontos de coleta. Entre os estimadores da concentração de nutrientes testados, o TM apresentou os maiores valores, exceto para Ca na madeira, o que acarreta superestimação do estoque de nutrientes. Para as condições do estudo, considerando o TMPB como melhor estimador da concentração de nutrientes, o intervalo de confiança para altura relativa de coleta de amostras foi estimado em 35 - 53% para madeira e 38 - 46% para casca.

Abstract This study was conducted in a 17-year-old Pinus taeda L. stand, in Cambará do Sul (RS state), in a soil classified as Humic Cambisol. It had as objective to study nutrients allocation pattern along the stem and its implications for sampling and the nutrient stock estimates. Eighteen (18) trees were sampled, distributed in 6 diametric classes, collecting bark and wood samples in the following relative heights (percentage from total height): h0.1 (10%), h0.3 (30%), h0.5 (50%), h0.7 (70%) e h0.9 (90%). The nutrient allocation pattern along the stem was studied based on the comparison of averages and regression equations, correlating nutrient content and the sampling height. Different nutrient content estimators were tested: arithmetic average content (TM), level weighted average diameter of the section (TMPD), biomass-weighted average content of the section (TMPB), being TMPB considered as the standard treatment. Excepted for Mn and in wood, all nutrients showed higher content in the upper part of the stem (h0.9), sometimes 2.7 times higher in wood and 5 times higher in bark, compared to stem base (h0.1). Calcium (Ca) in the wood showed a reverse behavior, in other words, showed highest contents in the base of the stem (h0.1); while Mn did not statistically differ among the sampling points. Among the tested nutrient content estimators, TM showed highest values, excepted for Ca in wood, that leads to nutrients stock overestimation. For the study conditions, considering TMPB as the best nutrient concentration estimator, the confidence interval for height sampling points was estimated in 35 - 53% for wood and 38 - 46% for bark.

Resumo O estudo foi realizado com o objetivo de subsidiar práticas de manejo nutricional de povoamentos de Eucalyptus spp. em pequenas propriedades rurais no estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Foram avaliados povoamentos de 2, 4, 6 e 8 anos de idade, com amostragem de 24 árvores e determinação da biomassa e nutrientes nos componentes: folha, galho vivo, galho morto, madeira e casca do tronco e raiz. Também foi estimada a biomassa e o conteúdo de nutrientes no sub-bosque e na serapilheira. A biomassa e o estoque de nutrientes no eucalipto foram estimados por meio do produto dos valores médios por componente, classe diamétrica e número de árvores por hectare, e no sub-bosque e serapilheira, por extrapolação com base na área das unidades amostrais. A eficiência de utilização dos nutrientes no eucalipto foi estimada através do coeficiente de utilização biológico (CUB). Considerando-se o estoque total de nutrientes no eucalipto, em média, a partição, por nutriente, obedeceu a seguinte ordem: Ca (40,0%), N (25,6%), K (22,6%), Mg (5,9%), S (3,1%), P (2,8%); e por componente: casca do tronco (27,5%), folha (25,1%), madeira do tronco (22,5%), galho vivo (14,4%), raiz (9,4%) e galho morto (1,1%). A serapilheira e o sub-bosque desempenham importante função na manutenção dos nutrientes no ecossistema florestal, e acumularam em média, em relação ao estoque total no eucalipto, para N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S, respectivamente, 47,1%, 34,0%, 33,6%, 32,8%, 35,3% e 36,6%. A colheita florestal realizada em povoamentos jovens acarreta perda no rendimento de madeira do tronco e maior exportação relativa de nutrientes (menor CUB). A colheita total da biomassa de eucalipto acima do solo, quando comparada com a colheita apenas da madeira do tronco, aumentou a exportação de N, P, K, Ca, Mg e S, respectivamente, em 83%, 152%, 193%, 445%, 305% e 49%, ao passo que a remoção de biomassa aumentou apenas 20%.

Abstract This study was conducted to achieve practical subsidies for nutritional management in Eucalyptus spp. stands in small farms located in Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Different stand ages were evaluated (2, 4, 6 and 8 years old), twenty-four (24) trees were sampled and biomass and nutrients were determined for the following components: leaf, live branch, dead branch, wood and bark from the trunk and root. Biomass and nutrient content in the understory and litter were also estimated. Biomass and nutrients stock in eucalypts were estimated through the product of the mean values for each component, diametric class and number of trees per hectare, and in understory and litter, it was obtained through extrapolation based on the sample unit areas. Utilization efficiency from eucalyptus nutrients was estimated through the coefficient of biological utilization (CUB). Considering total nutrients stock in the eucalyptus, nutrients partition followed this order: Ca (40.0%), N (25.6%), K (22.6%), Mg (5.9%), S (3.1%), P (2.8%); and for component: trunk bark (27.5%), leaf (25.1%), wood trunk (22.5%), live branch (14.4%), root (9.4%) and dead branch (1.1%). Litter and understory play an important role in nutrients maintenance in forest ecosystems and accumulate (in average), based on the total stock for eucalyptus, for N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S, respectively, 47.1%, 34.0%, 33.6%, 32.8%, 35.3% and 36.6%. Forest harvesting in young stands leads to loss in wood yield and a higher nutrients relative export (lower CUB). The total eucalyptus biomass harvest above the soil, when compared to the harvest of only the trunk wood, increased the exports of N, P, K, Ca, Mg and S, respectively, in 83%, 152%, 193%, respectively. 445%, 305% and 49%, while the removal of biomass increased only 20%.

ABSTRACT Rainfall is one of the primary nutrient inputs to vegetation and its chemical composition is dependent on air quality as falling rain scavenges gaseous and particulate emissions from natural, industrial, and agricultural activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether the vegetation burn in a region of the Pampa biome influences the pH and chemical composition (anions) in incident rainfall. Nitrate, sulfate, and chloride concentrations, as well as the pH of the rainwater, were influenced by suspended particles in the atmosphere from biomass burning of native grassland and pasture renewal. The rainwater was acidified by, ash, and soot, which introduced large amounts of chloride and sulfate into the ecosystems caused by burning vegetation.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi quantificar a deposição e o aporte de nutrientes através da serapilheira em um fragmento de Floresta Estacional Decidual, em Itaara, Rio Grande do Sul. Foram demarcadas seis parcelas, alocadas no interior da floresta de forma sistemática, nestas foram instalados cinco coletores de serapilheira com formato cônico. O material depositado nessa estrutura foi separado em folhas, identificadas por espécies, galhos finos (diâmetro < 0,5 cm) e miscelânea (flores, frutos, sementes e restos vegetais). Após o fracionamento e separação foi realizada a determinação dos teores de nutrientes. A quantidade total de serapilheira aportada no período em estudo foi de 39,8 Mg ha-1, sendo composta por 68,4% de folhas, 16,3% de galhos e 15,3% de miscelânea. A espécie com maior quantidade de serapilheira depositada foi a Parapiptadenia rigida com 16,1%, seguido de 9,0% de Ocotea pulchella e 5,9% de Matayba elaeagnoides. A deposição de serapilheira segue a ordem: primavera>outono>inverno>verão. A quantidade aportada de nutrientes seguiu a ordem: N>Ca>K>Mg>S>P para os macronutrientes, e Fe>Mn>B>Zn>Cu para os micronutrientes. A maior devolução de nutrientes via serapilheira foi produzida pela espécie Parapiptadenia rigida, seguida de Ocotea pulchella e Matayba elaeagnoides.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to quantify the deposition and nutrients input by litter in the fragment of Seasonal Deciduous Forest, in Itaara, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Thirty circular metal collectors were allocated in six plots. The deposited material in this structure was separated in leaves, identified by species, fine branches (diameter < 0.5 cm) and miscellany (flowers, fruits, seeds and plants residues). After the fractionation and separation procedures, the determination of nutrients was realized. The total amount of litter biomass input in the period of study was 39.8 Mg ha-1, composed 68.4% of leaves, 16.3% of branches e 15.3% of miscellany. The species with higher litter deposition was Parapiptadenia rigida with 16.1%, following of 9.0% of Ocotea pulchella and 5.9% of Matayba elaeagnoides. Litter deposition follows the order: spring>autumn>winter>summer. The nutrients input follow the order: N>Ca>K>Mg>S>P (macronutrients) and Fe>Mn>B>Zn>Cu (micronutrients). The higher nutrient depositions by litter was Parapiptadenia rigida, following of Ocotea pulchella and Matayba elaeagnoides.

ABSTRACT We evaluated the nutrient input via incident rainfall in a Eucalyptus dunnii stand in the Brazilian Pampa biome. During the two-year study, we analyzed nutrient concentrations in incident rainfall (P), throughfall via drip (Pi), and stemflow (Et). Ion concentrations (NO2-, NO3-, PO43- , SO42-, Cl-, K+, Ca2+ , and Mg2+) were determined from the aqueous solution, and based on the water volume, the quantity per hectare (kg ha-1) was estimated for each element. Statistical differences observed by ANOVA and separation of means contrasts were subjected to Tukey’s test (5%), adopting a completely randomized design. Higher concentrations of SO4 2- in P; NO3- in Pi solution, and K+, Ca2+ , Mg2+, and Cl- in Et were observed. Greater amounts of nutrients such as Cl-, K+, Ca2+, and SO42 were incorporated via Pi.

ABSTRACT For the development of nutrient budget models to recommend lime and fertilizers for agricultural and forestry crops, curves of plant growth and nutrient accumulation are required. Information about how nutrients are partitioned between the different plant organs is also necessary, but still scarce for pine in Brazil. This study evaluated the growth, biomass partitioning, and nutrient dynamics in pine forests in southern Brazil. To this end, we assessed unthinned 2, 4, 6, and 8-year-old stands of Pinus taeda L. Three plots of 20 × 30 m per stand were delimited, in which three trees of different classes of diameter at breast height (DBH) were chosen. These trees were measured, felled, and the weight of their fresh components (leaves, branches, bark, and wood) was evaluated. Samples of each tree compartment and from the forest litter were taken to determine dry weight and nutrient content. From trees of the mean DBH class, the roots were also collected and the dry weight and nutrient contents determined. The same sampling procedure was carried out with soil for physical and chemical characterization. Regression models were adjusted to estimate growth, nutrient uptake, and nutrient use efficiency of pine trees, based on data collected in this and previous studies. The equations developed in this research can be used in nutrient budget models as well as in other simulation models, to establish recommendations of lime and fertilizers for Pinus taeda stands in southern Brazil.
