OBJETIVO: Foi relatar casos de pacientes brasileiros com complicações neurológicas da cirurgia bariátrica. A literatura no assunto é escassa. MÉTODO: Foram reunidos e descritos casos atendidos por neurologistas em oito cidades brasileiras diferentes. RESULTADOS: Vinte e seis casos foram coletados neste estudo. A complicação neurológica mais frequente foi a polineuropatia axonal, mas também foram identificados casos de desmielinização central, síndrome de Wernicke, neurite óptica, radiculites, meralgia parestésica e neuropatias compressivas. Vinte e um pacientes (80%) não tiveram recuperação ou tiveram apenas recuperação parcial dos sinais e sintomas neurológicos. CONCLUSÃO: A cirurgia bariátrica, procedimento cada vez mais popularizado, não está livre de potenciais complicações neurológicas as quais deveriam ser claramente expostas aos indivíduos que a ela se submetem. Embora não possa ser estabelecida uma clara relação causa-efeito entre essa cirurgia e os sinais e sintomas referidos nos casos aqui apresentados, a literatura consultada mostrou ser importante alertar o indivíduo acerca dos riscos potenciais envolvidos nesse procedimento.

OBJECTIVE: It was to report on Brazilian cases of neurological complications from bariatric surgery. The literature on the subject is scarce. METHOD: Cases attended by neurologists in eight different Brazilian cities were collected and described in the present study. RESULTS: Twenty-six cases were collected in this study. Axonal polyneuropathy was the most frequent neurological complication, but cases of central demyelination, Wernicke syndrome, optical neuritis, radiculits, meralgia paresthetica and compressive neuropathies were also identified. Twenty-one patients (80%) had partial or no recovery from the neurological signs and symptoms. CONCLUSION: Bariatric surgery, a procedure that is continuously increasing in popularity, is not free of potential neurological complications that should be clearly presented to the individual undergoing this type of surgery. Although a clear cause-effect relation cannot be established for the present cases, the cumulative literature on the subject makes it important to warn the patient of the potential risks of this procedure.

A epilepsia é um distúrbio neurológico crônico, com repercussões psicossociais, físicas, educacionais e neuropsicológicas. OBJETIVOS: Verificar a percepção de professores do primeiro grau de Florianópolis/SC acerca da criança com epilepsia, e investigar sobre o nível de conhecimento dos mesmos sobre a epilepsia. MÉTODO: Utilizou-se "Questionário de percepção estigma para professores do primeiro grau" (Fernandes e Souza, 2004) em 37 professores do ensino fundamental de 4 escolas (3 particulares e 1 pública) de Florianópolis/SC. RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÃO: Verificou-se que a média de idade das participantes foi de 37 anos e 8 meses, tendo na sua maioria 3º grau completo. Os professores da escola pública apresentaram maior nível de instrução em relação às demais (X²=8.852, p=0.034). A maioria indicou conhecimento regular ou insuficiente sobre epilepsia. Acerca da autoavaliação sobre o nível de conhecimento de professoras, proteger a cabeça é importante (X²=9.931, p=0.033) e permanecer junto a criança. A maioria acredita que o aluno deve frequentar escola comum (n=35). Os professores ficaram divididos em relação a prática de atividades físicas. A maioria refere que a epilepsia é causada por fatores genéticos. A promoção de informação é válida, buscando inserção social e compreensão da condição da criança com epilepsia na escola.

The epilepsy is a chronic neurological disturb, with psicossocial, physical, educational and neuropsychological repercussions. OBJECTIVES: To verify the perception of professors of the basic education Florianópolis/SC concerning the child with epilepsy, and to investigate the level of knowledge of the teachers about the epilepsy. METHOD: The "Questionnaire of perception stigma for professors of the first degree" (Fernandes and Souza,2004) was used in 37 professors of the basic education of 4 schools (3 private and 1 public) of Florianópolis/SC. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Was verified that the average of age of the participants was of 37 years and 8 months, having in its majority complete graduation on university. The teachers of the public school had greater level of instruction in relation to others (X ²=8.852, p=0.034). The majority indicated regular or insufficient knowledge (n=24) on epilepsy. Concerning the auto-evaluation on the level of knowledge of teachers, to protect the head is important (X²=9.931, p=0.033) and to remain next to child. The majority believes that the child must frequent school common (n=35). The professors had been divided in relation the practical of physical activities. The majority relates that the epilepsy is caused by genetic factors. The information promotion is valid, searching social insertion and understanding of the condition of the child with epilepsy in the school.

A epilepsia refratária gera impacto na integração social, tendo repercussões emocionais e neuropsicológicas, possibilitando a vivência do estigma pelo paciente e seus familiares. OBJETIVO: Avaliar a percepção do estigma em crianças com epilepsia refratária e asma grave e em seus respectivos cuidadores, correlacionando os resultados entre estas duas doenças crônicas. Verificar as possíveis diferenças na percepção do estigma entre estes dois grupos de crianças. MÉTODOS: Estudo hipotético-dedutivo-observacional-transversal. A amostra foi constituída de crianças com epilepsia refratária (e seus cuidadores) e do grupo controle constituído por crianças com asma grave (e seus respectivos cuidadores). As avaliações foram realizadas a partir de Escalas de Estigma (Child stigma scale e Parent stigma scale) e Escalas Weschsler de inteligência (WISC III - versão para crianças e WAIS III - versão para adultos) (em critérios de exclusão). RESULTADOS: A análise de variância mostrou que a percepção do estigma é semelhante em ambas doenças, com médias de 22,35 nas crianças com epilepsia e 20,84 naquelas com asma. A maioria das crianças apresentou pontuação na escala de estigma, entre valores médios e altos, sugerindo que a percepção do estigma é significativa. Enquanto que os cuidadores de crianças com epilepsia mostraram média 15,35 e aqueles que cuidam de crianças com asma apresentaram média 15,16, indicando igual vivência de estigma entre os cuidadores.

The refractory epilepsy causes an impact in the social integration, emotional and neuropsychological repercussions, which make living with the stigma possible by the patient and the patient's family. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the stigma perception on children who suffer from refractory epilepsy and the severe asthma and also on their caregivers, correlating the results between these two chronic diseases. To check the possible differences in the perception of the stigma between these two groups of children. METHODS: Hypothetical-deductive-observational-transversal research. The sample was done with children who suffer from refractory epilepsy (and their caregivers) and with the control group of children with severe asthma (and their caregivers). The evaluations were realized based on the Stigma scale (Child stigma scale e Parent stigma scale) and the Weschsler intelligence scale (WISC III - child version and WAIS III - adult version) (in exclusion criteria). RESULTS: The analysis of the variances has shown that the stigma perception is similar on both diseases, with average figures of 22, 35 on children with epilepsy and 20, 84 on those with asthma. Most of the children have shown punctuation in the stigma scale, among average and high numbers, suggesting a significant perception of the stigma. While the caregivers of children with epilepsy have shown average 15, 35 and those who take care of children with asthma have presented an average 15, 16, indicating the same living stigma among caregivers.

INTRODUÇÃO: A epilepsia é um distúrbio neurológico com crises recorrentes, promovendo o aumento do risco de desenvolvimento de desajustes psicossociais, restrições e prejuízos na qualidade de vida (QV) de crianças e seus familiares. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar a QV de crianças com epilepsia refratária ao tratamento medicamentoso e de seus cuidadores. MÉTODO: Estudo hipotético-dedutivo-observacional-transversal. Utilizou-se questionários de QV (AUQEI, WHOQOL-bref) e Escalas de Inteligência Wechsler (WAIS-III e WISC-III). RESULTADOS E CONCLUSÕES: A criança com epilepsia refratária tem QV prejudicada (média 47,25). Seu cuidador mostra satisfatória QV (média 83,41).

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is a neurological condition with recurrent crises which increases the risk of developing psychosocial problems, restrictions and damages in the quality of life (QL) of children and their relatives. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the QL of both children with medically refractory epilepsy and their caretakers. METHODS: Hypothetical, deductive, observational, transversal study. The evaluations were based on QL questionnaires (AUQEI, WHOQOL-bref) and Wechsler intelligence scales (WAIS-III e WISC-III). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A child with refractory epilepsy has a lower QL (average of 47.25). The child’s caretaker has a satisfactory QL (average of 83.41).
