Abstract This research aimed to evaluate the economic viability of different scenarios for the first thinning in Khaya ivorensis monocultures and present an estimate of age and thinning intensity that provide a higher invested capital return. There were carried out 576 simulations considering different implementation and maintenance costs, ages for first thinning, thinning intensities, and recipes for standing wood sale. The Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were calculated. The minimum price for standing wood, which all simulations were economically feasible, was 1 638 R$ m-3 for 10% thinning intensity, from 819 R$ m-3 to 20%, from 546 R$ m-3 for 30%, and 410 R$ m-3 for 40%. The simulations that maximized the NPV values were those with thinning prediction at five years of age. The percentage planning of thinned volume can be carried out by adopting economic criteria such as NPV and IRR. To obtain a return from the capital invested from the first thinning at five years of age, the percentage estimate from the thinned volume can be obtained according to the standing wood sale price for different minimum rates of attractiveness.

Objective: To examine personality/temperament features and mental health vulnerability in offspring of mothers with bipolar disorders (BD), including dimensions which may impact psychological characteristics or therapeutic measures. Methods: A systematic review, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, was conducted to search for original articles that investigated personality/temperament features of offspring of women with BD and emotional factors involved in the mother-child relationship. The electronic search was performed in the PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO databases from February 2010 to February 2017. Results: Ten quantitative studies were included in the analysis: seven from the United States, two from Brazil, and one from Canada. The narrative synthesis was categorized into three dimensions: 1) reliability of instruments for prediction of future psychopathology in offspring; 2) environmental risk factors for offspring; and 3) early interventions. The findings showed impairments in the offspring’s lives, high rates of behavior and temperament problems, and psychiatric disorders. Conclusion: BD is a frequent psychiatric disorder, and the offspring of mothers with this condition are exposed to complex family relationships and psychosocial difficulties. If they are to ensure a good provision of mental health and psychosocial care to this unique population, early interventions must not neglect their contextual specificities. Abstract Wood in civil construction has restrictions regarding its external use due to the actions of natural weathering, which can represent a real risk because they modify the characteristics of this material. This study aimed to evaluate the superficial deterioration of Trattinnickia rhoifolia (amescla), Parkia pendula (angelim), Erisma uncinatum (cedar), Apuleia leiocarpa (garapeira), and Mezilaurus itauba (itaúba) wood specimens exposed to natural weathering. For this purpose, wood samples were submitted to outdoor exposure on a metal platform, without contact with the ground, for 360 days. Every 60 days, the wood surface was characterized by colorimetry (L*, a*, b*, C*, h, and ΔE), roughness (Ra, Rz, and Rt), and hardness Rockwell. A darkened surface (grayish color) on the wood was observed after natural weathering, indicated by the decrease in the colorimetric parameters L*, a*, and b*. E. uncinatum wood presented the lowest values of the total color change (ΔE). In addition to the discoloration, weathered wood presented the highest values of surface roughness and the lowest values of Rockwell hardness due to the occurrence of surface cracks. A. leiocarpa and M. itauba woods presented greater stability of roughness and Rockwell hardness throughout the outdoor exposure.

Malaria, a parasitic infection caused by Plasmodium falciparum, is a serious global public health problem. The enzyme enoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase present in a limiting step in the biosynthesis of fatty acids type II was used to search for novel molecules with potential inhibitor by virtual screening techniques. A flavonoid library obtained in ChEMBL database (n = 4,008) was filtered through physico-chemical similarity using the Euclidean distance as a criterion. The selected molecules were subjected to molecular docking using the scoring function GridScore in the DOCK 6.5 software. The top 30 ranked molecules by molecular docking were submitted to the AuPosSOM 2.1 software with the aim of clustering molecules by means of intermolecular interactions in order to understand the patterns of these interactions with enoyl-ACP reductase from Plasmodium falciparum (PfENR). We observed the importance of flavonoid moiety to hydrophobic interactions with the active site of enzyme, this confirmed the choice to study this metabolite class as PfENR inhibitors. Moreover, it was possible to recognize which intermolecular interactions contribute to the molecular recognition process.

Biodiesel made from oils is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids methyl esters, and, consequently, presents high tendency to oxidize. Biodiesel made from fats, on the other hand, is mainly comprised by saturated chains. Although it is highly stable, they easily crystalize at low temperatures. Blends from both can exhibit optimized properties. In this work, oxidative stability, expressed by induction period (IP), and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of blends from palm, palm kernel, babassu, tallow or lard biodiesels with soy one were measured. Biodiesel samples were prepared by two steps transesterification methodology with KOH catalysis followed by H2SO4. IP increases, as the fat biodiesel content in the blend is higher, as expected. Blends comprised by 60% of fat biodiesel by volume had their IP increased from 1.5 (lard) to 2 times (palm kernel), compared to soy one. At this level, IP was found 8 h or higher, except for palm, which 80% was required. CFPP was observed at 8 °C or lower for the blends containing up to 60% of all the fat biodiesel, except for the palm one, which a 20% content must not be surpassed. Palm kernel 80% biodiesel blend reached the Brazilian specification, that is, IP higher than 12 h and CFPP lower than 5 °C.

Abstract The present study aimed to characterize the importance of the Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in the genesis of cattle tick fever (CTF) among dairy calves in the northwest of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Blood samples from 300 calves were collected, followed by DNA extraction and nested PCR using oligonucleotide primers to amplify fragments of the semi-nested for the msp5 gene (A. marginale), sbp-4 (B. bovis) and rap-1a (B. bigemina) Among the examined calves, the prevalence of A. marginale was 55.6% (n=167/300), B. bovis was 4.0% (n=12/300) and B. bigemina was 15.3% (n=46/300), by PCR techniques. Parasitic forms of A. marginale and B. bigemina were found in 36,3% and 2,6% of the blood smears while B. bovis was not detected. There was a statistical difference between the positivity of infected animals in the age groups 1 (10-70 days) and (>70-300 days) for A. marginale and B. bigemina. A total of 15 calves with the classic symptoms of disease were examined, and the samples obtained were confirmed as a simple infection by A. marginale through semi-nested PCR. These results confirm bovine anaplasmosis as the primary cause of CTF among the calves of dairy cattle within the studied area.

ABSTRACT The search for new alternatives in order to reuse residues is one way to minimize environmental impacts by promoting sustainable practices. This study analyzed the technical feasibility of briquettes production from urban pruning residue and sugarcane bagasse, turning them into a product with higher added value besides directing their use and reducing their improper disposal. Five treatments were studied from different ratios of the two residues: T1, T2, T3, T4 and T5, respectively made of 100% of urban pruning; 50% urban pruning and 50% sugarcane bagasse; 25% urban pruning and 75% sugarcane bagasse; 10% urban pruning and 90% sugarcane bagasse; 100% sugarcane bagasse. The materials were characterized physically, chemically and energetically. Briquettes were produced and evaluated for mechanical performance, with expansion tests, mechanical resistance and friability to verify the quality of the final product. The treatments 1 and 2 showed the best results, with lower friability and average values of mechanical resistance of 167.14 and 107.56 kgf, respectively. It is concluded that both residues (sugarcane bagasse and urban pruning) had potential for briquette production, as well as the mixture between both materials.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the spatial patterns of physical and chemical properties of a soil in an experimental basin with an area of 149 km2, located in the municipality of Pesqueira, in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco state (Brazil). Samples were taken in the layers of 0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m, at 35 monitoring points distributed in an irregular grid, encompassing the three soil classes present in the basin and commonly found in the semi-arid region. For the attributes of soil texture, organic carbon and bulk density in the layer of 0.10-0.20 m, spatial dependence from medium to strong was detected, ranging from 0.03 to 49.98%. Bulk density in the layer 0-0.10 m, as well as the electrical conductivity, in both layers, showed pure nugget effect, possibly due to insufficient sampling distance to capture spatial dependence. However, geostatistics represented well the spatial dynamics of soil attributes at points where the mapping is possible.

ABSTRACT This study analyzed the reproductive stage, histology and morphometry of the testes of Dermanura cinerea (Gervais, 1856) in Atlantic Forest fragment on the South Coast of Pernambuco. Specimens were captured by mist net, and collections occurred monthly over two consecutive nights for 18 months. The meteorological data were grouped in rainy and dry months. Eighteen adult specimens were used, which were classified in males with descendant testes and with testes no descendant. For the histological analysis, the testes were collected, fixed and processed following the routine histological technique. The slides obtained were stained by Hematoxylin-Eosin. In the morphometric analysis the area of occupation of the tubular and intertubular compartment were measured, the number of Leydig, Sertoli, spermatocytes and elongated spermatids were quantified. The morphometric data were submitted to statistical analysis. Dermanura cinerea presented higher sperm production activity in dry months and higher hormone production in rainy months. This information is also related to the reproductive pattern of the females and to the increase in rainfall indexes, since it is a determinant factor in the mediation of the food availability of the frugivorous species, such as D. cinerea in the Atlantic Forest area of Pernambuco.

ABSTRACT Background Cardiac risk stratification is related to the risk of the occurrence of events induced by exercise. Despite the existence of several protocols to calculate risk stratification, studies indicating that there is similarity between these protocols are still unknown. Objective To evaluate the agreement between the existing protocols on cardiac risk rating in cardiac patients. Method The records of 50 patients from a cardiac rehabilitation program were analyzed, from which the following information was extracted: age, sex, weight, height, clinical diagnosis, medical history, risk factors, associated diseases, and the results from the most recent laboratory and complementary tests performed. This information was used for risk stratification of the patients in the protocols of the American College of Sports Medicine, the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, the protocol designed by Frederic J. Pashkow, the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the Société Française de Cardiologie, and the Sociedad Española de Cardiología. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the sample and the analysis of agreement between the protocols was calculated using the Kappa coefficient. Differences were considered with a significance level of 5%. Results Of the 21 analyses of agreement, 12 were considered significant between the protocols used for risk classification, with nine classified as moderate and three as low. No agreements were classified as excellent. Different proportions were observed in each risk category, with significant differences between the protocols for all risk categories. Conclusion The agreements between the protocols were considered low and moderate and the risk proportions differed between protocols.

Several studies of the physiological responses of different organisms exposed to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) have been described. In this work, we report the minimal effects of in situ exposure to ELF-EMF on the global protein expression of Chromobacterium violaceum using a gel-based proteomic approach. The protein expression profile was only slightly altered, with five differentially expressed proteins detected in the exposed cultures; two of these proteins (DNA-binding stress protein, Dps, and alcohol dehydrogenase) were identified by MS/MS. The enhanced expression of Dps possibly helped to prevent physical damage to DNA. Although small, the changes in protein expression observed here were probably beneficial in helping the bacteria to adapt to the stress generated by the electromagnetic field.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Objective It has been observed during recent decades that a large percentage of the population has an inadequate lifestyle and that there is a need for identifying factors determining such behavior pattern. This study was thus aimed at determining the association between lifestyle and sociodemographic variables of freshmen attending a state university in southern Brazil. Methods The sample consisted of 716 students (59.6 % female). The Fantastic questionnaire was used for evaluating the students' lifestyles; their lifestyle was classified as being suitable or inadequate. The sociodemographic variables of interest were gender, age group (<20 and ≥ 20 years), paid work (yes or no), maternal education (≤4 years of study, 5-8 years and ≥9 years), study shift (daytime or night-time) and marital status (single and married). Binary logistic regression was used for determining associations between lifestyle and sociodemographic characteristics (p<0.05 being significant). Results Inadequate lifestyle prevalence was 5.3 %. Adjusted analysis results indicated that students over 20 years-old (OR=2.87: 1.37-6.03 95 %CI) whose mothers' formal education had lasted less than nine years (OR=2.23: 1.29-3.88 95 %CI) had a higher risk of having an inadequate lifestyle. Conclusion These findings may be useful for developing university healthcare promotion programs, paying special attention to older freshmen whose mothers have had less formal education.

Novel designed 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole fluorescent probes were synthesized, characterized and applied as live cell fluorescence imaging probe staining only mitochondria in mammalian cancer cell lines (MCF-7). The efficiency of these new probes was found to be much superior to that of the commercially available MitoTracker® Red. Cellular and in vitro experiments allowed better understanding of the relationship between the planned molecular architecture of the new dyes and the observed cellular selectivity.
