Abstract Introduction COVID-19 causes multisystemic compromises, resulting in functional impairments, mainly related to the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs). Therefore, the occupational therapist is one of the professionals needed to favor the rehabilitation process. Objective To analyze the proportion of ADLs training and the main activities that were trained with patients with COVID-19. Method This is a documental study developed in a teaching hospital in the southeast region of Brazil. Occupational therapy records were analyzed in electronic medical records of patients admitted to COVID-19 infirmaries between June 2020 and January 2021. Results The prevalence of occupational therapy attendances was 53.1%. The patients who were prioritized were those restricted to bed, with worse functionality and longer hospital stay. In all, 413 attendances were performed; the average per patient was three, the minimum was one, and the maximum was 15. The proportion of ADLs training was 76.9%. The most trained activities in the infirmaries by the occupational therapy team were feeding (96.8%), personal hygiene (93.9%), and functional mobility (59.8%). Conclusion The development of this study promoted the discussion of the careful multidimensional analysis performed by occupational therapists to carry out ADLs training with patients diagnosed with Covid-19 hospitalized in wards. Furthermore, it brought important results related to the profile of the patients seen, the proportions of interventions aimed at ADLs training and the elements that guided this practice.

Resumo Introdução A Covid-19 acarreta comprometimentos multissistêmicos, ocasionando prejuízos funcionais, principalmente voltados às Atividades de Vida Diária (AVDs), sendo imprescindível a atuação do terapeuta ocupacional no processo de reabilitação. Objetivo Analisar a proporção de treino de AVDs e as principais atividades treinadas com pacientes com Covid-19. Método Trata-se de um estudo documental realizado em um hospital universitário da região sudeste do Brasil. Foram analisados registros da terapia ocupacional em prontuário eletrônico de pacientes internados em enfermarias de Covid-19, entre junho de 2020 e janeiro de 2021. Resultados A prevalência de atendimentos terapêuticos ocupacionais foi de 53,1%. Os pacientes atendidos estavam restritos ao leito, com maior dependência para as AVDs e mais tempo de hospitalização. Foram realizados 413 atendimentos no total, sendo que a média por paciente foi de três, o mínimo de um e o máximo de 15. A proporção do treino de AVDs foi de 76,9%. As AVDs mais treinadas foram alimentação (96,8%), higiene pessoal (93,9%) e mobilidade funcional (59,8%). Conclusão O desenvolvimento deste estudo promoveu a discussão da análise multidimensional cuidadosa, realizada por terapeutas ocupacionais para efetuar o treino de AVDs com pacientes diagnosticados com Covid-19, internados em enfermarias. Ademais, trouxe resultados importantes relacionados ao perfil dos pacientes atendidos, às proporções das intervenções voltadas ao treino de AVDs e aos elementos que nortearam essa prática.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a síndrome do doente eutireóideo como fator prognóstico em pacientes na unidade de terapia intensiva, detectar fatores que possam influenciar a mortalidade e desenvolver uma equação para calcular a probabilidade de morte. Métodos: Este foi um estudo de coorte longitudinal, observacional e não concorrente realizado na unidade de terapia intensiva da Fundação Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará. Realizou-se coleta de 20mL de sangue em 100 adultos sem endocrinopatia previamente documentada para a dosagem do hormônio estimulante da tireoide, da tetraiodotironina livre, da tri-iodotironina livre e da tri-iodotironina reversa. Resultados: A maioria dos pacientes era do sexo feminino, com idades entre 20 e 29 anos. A maioria dos pacientes que morreram era mais velha (idade mediana de 48 anos), e 97,5% deles possuíam a síndrome do doente eutireóideo. A síndrome do doente eutireóideo esteve relacionada à morte, às comorbidades, à idade e ao tempo de internação (mediana de 7,5 dias) na unidade de terapia intensiva. A baixa dosagem de hormônio estimulante da tireoide estava associada à morte. Os pacientes com dosagem da tri-iodotironina livre menor que 2,9pg/mL tinham maior probabilidade de morrer e, naqueles que morreram, a dosagem de tri-iodotironina reversa era maior que 0,2ng/mL. A tri-iodotironina livre apresentou maior sensibilidade e acurácia, e a tri-iodotironina reversa teve maior especificidade para prever a mortalidade. Com base nos resultados e pontos de corte, desenvolveu-se uma fórmula de regressão logística múltipla para calcular a probabilidade de morte. Conclusão: Sugere-se verificar oportunamente a dosagem da triiodotironina livre e reversa em pacientes graves e aplicar a equação proposta.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess euthyroid sick syndrome as a prognostic factor in patients in the intensive care unit; to detect factors that may affect mortality; and to develop an equation to calculate death probability. Methods: This was a longitudinal, observational, nonconcurrent cohort study developed in the intensive care unit of Fundação Santa Casa de Misericórdia do Pará. One hundred adults with no prior documented endocrinopathy were submitted to a 20mL blood sample collection for the measurement of thyroid stimulating hormone, free tetraiodothyronine, free triiodothyronine and reverse triiodothyronine. Results: Most patients were female, aged 20 to 29 years. Most patients who died were older (median age of 48 years), and euthyroid sick syndrome was present in 97.5% of them. Euthyroid sick syndrome was related to death, comorbidities, age and length of stay in the intensive care unit (median of 7.5 days). There was an association between lower thyroid stimulating hormone and death. Patients with free triiodothyronine levels below 2.9pg/mL were more likely to die; reverse triiodothyronine rates were above 0.2ng/mL in those who died. Free triiodothyronine had greater sensitivity and accuracy, and reverse triiodothyronine had greater specificity to predict mortality. Based on the results and cutoff points, a multiple logistic regression formula was developed to calculate the probability of death. Conclusion: The main limitation of this study is the fact that it was conducted in a reference hospital for maternal and child care; therefore, there was a greater number of female patients and, consequently, a sampling bias existed. However, opportune measurement of free and reverse triiodothyronine levels in critical patients and application of the proposed equation are suggested.

Abstract Listeria monocytogenes is a gram-positive bacterium that can survive in food production environments and food products. This microorganism is associated with listeriosis, a serious infection caused by the consumption of contaminated food. The aim of this study was to conduct an integrative literature review on the regulation of L. monocytogenes in food in Brazil, its occurrence and methodologies used for identification in studies published from 2001 to 2021, and the epidemiological surveillance of cases of infection. The current regulations for L. monocytogenes prohibit ready-to-eat foods of more than 102 per gram or milliliter. Officially, only two cases of outbreaks have been identified in the Epidemiological Surveillance of Foodborne Diseases system; however, the circulation of L. monocytogenes was observed in foods of different origins, with occurrence ranging from 3.1 to 48.7. The most commonly used identification method was ISO 11290. The isolation and identification methods for this pathogen are expensive and laborious, making it difficult to implement these methodologies in many laboratories. This scenario contributes to the underreporting of cases of listeriosis and therefore represents a risk for the population that is exposed to potentially contaminated food.

Abstract Conventional culture media are expensive owing to their constituents. Thus, several studies have sought to develop and evaluate the efficacy of alternative, low-cost culture media, in most cases, using natural and easily accessible raw materials. The present study is a literature review, observing various formulations of culture media based on products of plant origin for the growth of microorganisms and production of microbial compounds of industrial interest. In most formulations, vegetable substrates, such as soy, certain beans, corn, and rice, were used in addition to hortofruticultural products. Compared to conventional media, the alternative culture media often present satisfactory results in terms of microbial growth efficiency and production cost.

Abstract It is estimated that infections caused by bacteria of to the genus Vibrio are sub notified, however it is possible to notice the increase in the vibriosis incidence associated to the consumption of contaminated water and food, specially by raw seafood. Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus e Vibrio vulnificus are the main pathogenic species for humans and the infections caused by these bacteria can range from simple gastroenteritis to cases of sepsis. In Brazil, until 2020, the legislation that determined the microbial standards for food, RDC 12/2001, recommended that the presence of V. parahaemolyticus should be investigated in ready-to-eat food based on raw fish and similar. However, IN60, the new legislation that came into force on December 2020, no longer requires it. Since the presence of these bacteria are important risk factors for humans, as agents of diseases transmitted specially by food, it is important to monitor their presence in foods of marine origin, especially in fish and shellfish that will be consumed raw. Therefore, preventive approaches are needed, such as the control and monitoring of microbiological quality of water, mainly in high-risk food production environments (such as oysters, for example) and the microbiological control of these foods, including vibrio research.

Abstract The aim of this work was to determine the total phenolic content and evaluate the antioxidant, antibacterial, photoprotective and cytotoxic properties of corn silk ethanol extract prepared from corn silk that was air-dried at room temperature. Corn silk ethanol extract has a high content of phenolic compounds. The concentrations of ethanol extract required to produce 50% of maximal effect (EC50) in DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays were 489.0 and 166.1 µg/mL respectively, indicating low activity when compared to the positive control. The ethanolic extract of corn silk showed antibacterial activity, mainly on Gram-positive bacteria. The in vitro sun protection factor (SPF) of the ethanolic extract of corn silk incorporated into sunscreen UVA-UVB 5% gel with Pemulen TR-1® was evaluated for the first time. A relative increase in SPF efficacy was observed for the extract when the sunscreen was incorporated. The ethanolic extract of corn silk and the gel were considered non-cytotoxic. The corn silk ethanolic extract was characterized using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS). Eleven compounds including flavonoids, coumaric acid derivatives, terpenoid, hydroxycinnamic acid derivative and quinic acid derivative were suggested based on their accurate mass and MS/MS spectra.

Abstract Curcumin, contained at Turmeric (Curcumalonga), can exert many beneficial pleiotropic activities in the gastrointestinal tract. This study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of C. longa on 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced oral mucositis (OM) in hamsters. Phytochemical analysis of crude C. longa extract (CLE) was performed to detect the presence of curcumin by TLC and HPLC. Golden Syrian hamsters were orally pre-treated with CLE (5, 50, or 100mg/kg). Cheek pouch samples were subjected to macroscopic and histopathological evaluation. ELISA was performed to quantify the inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were assessed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy analysis. Behavior analysis was conducted by the open field test. Curcumin content in the CLE was 0.55%m/m ± 0.0161 (2.84%). The group treated with 5mg/kg CLE showed healing evidence with macroscopic absence of ulceration (p<0.05) and microscopic aspect of re-epithelialization, discrete inflammatory infiltrate and absence of edema. Treatment with 5mg/kg CLE significantly increased GSH levels, and reduced MDA levels and SOD activity (p˂0.05), and decreased IL-1β (p˂0.05) and TNF-α (p˂0.01) levels. A significant reduction in walking distance, ambulation, speed, and rearing was observed for motor activity. Curcumin reduced oxidative stress, inflammation, and motor activity in hamsters with 5-FU-induced OM.

Resumo Objetivo Os objetivos deste estudo foram descrever o perfil dos estudantes das áreas da saúde e exatas de uma universidade pública da região Centro-Oeste, determinar a prevalência de Transtornos Mentais Comuns (TMC) entre estes estudantes e verificar os fatores sociodemográficos e relacionadas ao curso associados a sua ocorrência no contexto da pandemia. Método Estudo transversal e de correlação realizado de maio a setembro de 2020 com uma amostra de 493 estudantes que responderam a um questionário eletrônico sobre as variáveis sociodemográficas e ao Self Reporting Questionnaire - SRQ 20. Foram realizadas análises descritivas das variáveis e de regressão logística por meio do Statiscal Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), versão 21.0. Foi adotado ponto de corte ≥7 no SRQ-20 para suspeição de TMC. Resultados A prevalência de TMC na população estudada foi de 66,1%. Na comparação entre os grupos (com ou sem TMC), as maiores taxas de prevalência estavam vinculadas ao sexo feminino (p<0,001) e estar em acompanhamento de saúde (p<0,001). A análise de regressão indicou como preditores significativos para TMC ser do sexo feminino (p<0,001) e estar em algum curso da área de exatas (p=0,050). Conclusão A alta prevalência de TMC demonstra a importância de programas de prevenção do sofrimento psíquico centrados nas necessidades dos acadêmicos, considerando o seu contexto e realidade vivida, buscando à promoção de saúde, bem-estar e o cuidado dos estudantes universitários.

Abstract Objective Describe the profile of students in the health and exact undergraduate courses of a public university in the Midwest region of Brazil, determine the prevalence of Common Mental Disorders (CMD) among these students, and verify the sociodemographic and course-related factors associated with their occurrence. Method A cross-sectional and relational study was carried out from May to September 2020 with a sample of 493 students who answered a survey on sociodemographic variables and the Self-reporting Questionnaire (SRQ 20). We conducted descriptive analyses of the variables and logistic regression, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21.0. A cutoff point ≥7 was adopted in the SRQ-20 for suspected CMD. Results The prevalence of CMD in the sample was 66.1%. Comparison between the groups (with or without CMD) showed that the highest prevalence rates were linked to the female gender (p<0.001) and undergoing health care treatment (p<0.001). Regression analysis indicated significant predictors for CMD being female (p<0.001) and being enrolled in exact science courses (p=0.050). Conclusion The high prevalence of CMD reinforces the need to invest in the creation of care spaces that pay special attention to women and exact sciences students, in addition to discussing student assistance policies aimed at promoting the health, well-being, and care of university students.

RESUMO Encontrar espécies florestais adaptadas a diversas condições edafoclimáticas, e que forneçam atributos favoráveis ao uso comercial é um desafio. A Azadirachta indica é uma espécie potencial para amenizar este problema. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar o resgate vegetativo de diferentes árvores adultas de Azadirachta indica Juss por estaquia. Para tanto, indivíduos de Azadirachta indica foram selecionados aleatoriamente em um plantio da espécie com 10 anos de implantação e realizada a decepa à altura de 30 cm. Em sequência, verificamos: a capacidade de rebrota das cepas (coletas e medições do comprimento das brotações aos 15, 30, 45 e 60 dias), a necessidade de usar auxina exógena para indução do enraizamento (testando 0 (controle), 2000, 4000 e 6000 mg.l-1 de AIB), o tamanho ideal do propágulo (propágulos com 8 cm e 13 cm de altura) e a dinâmica de enraizamento (cada sete dias, em um período de 35 dias, os propágulos foram avaliados quanto a: formação de calos, oxidação e enraizamento). A espécie demostrou alta capacidade de rebrota, bem como facilidade de enraizamento com ou sem a utilização de AIB; verificou-se que o tamanho ideal para o propágulo é 13 cm e que o processo de enraizamento e alongamento das raízes se completa após 35 dias do estaqueamento. Concluímos que o uso da estaquia para o resgate vegetativo da espécie é interessante, recomendamos que 13cm é adequado para o tamanho do propágulo e o auxílio do AIB na dose de 2.000 mg L-1 é ideal para uniformizar o enraizamento.

ABSTRACT Finding forest species adapted to different soil and climatic conditions and, that provide favorable attributes to commercial use is a challenge. Azadirachta indica is a potential species to attend to this goal. Thus, this paper aims to carry out the vegetative rescue of different Azadirachta indica Juss adult trees by cuttings. For that, Azadirachta indica individuals were randomly selected in a plantation of species set ten years ago and the cut was carried out at 30 cm in height. In sequence, verification was carried out on: (a) the stem cut ability to regrowth (collections and measurements of the shoot length on the 15th, 30th, 45th, and 60th days); (b) the need to use exogenous auxin for rooting induction [testing 0 (control), 2000, 4000, and 6000 mg.l-1 of Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA)]; (c) the ideal of the propagule size (with 8 cm and 13 cm in height); and (c) the rooting dynamics (every seven days for thirty-five days; the propagules were evaluated for callus formation, oxidation, and rooting). The species showed high regrowth ability, as well as easy rooting with or without the use of IBA; it was found that the ideal size for the propagule is 13 cm and that the process of rooting and root elongation is completed after thirty-five days of staking. The conclusion is: (a) using cuttings for the species vegetative rescue is interesting; (b) 13 cm is considered appropriate for the propagule size, and; (c) the aid of IBA at a dose of 2,000 mg L-1 is ideal to standardize rooting.

Abstract Effects were assessed of the dilutants TRIS and ACP - 101c® with the addition of different guinea fowl (Numida meleagris) egg yolk concentrations. Fifteen ejaculates were collected from five goats of the Anglo Nubian breed. The ejaculates were pooled and then divided into 12 groups, two control groups (GC1 TRIS, with 2.5% Gallus gallus domesticus hen egg yolk GOGD), (GC2 Control Group ACP - 101c®, with the addition of 2.5% Gallus gallus domesticus hen egg yolk GOGD) and ten experimental groups (EG), containing TRIS and ACP added with different concentrations of egg yolk from guinea hen (Numida meleagris) (TRIS 2,5% GONM; TRIS 5% GONM; TRIS 10% GONM; TRIS 15% GONM; TRIS 20% GONM; ACP® 2,5% GONM; ACP® 5% GONM; ACP® 10% GONM; ACP® 15% GONM; ACP® 20% GONM). Then cryopreservation was carried out and the samples stored in liquid nitrogen (-196 °C). After seven days, the samples were thawed and assessed for spermatic kinetics, immunofluorescence and sperm morphology. Analysis of GOMN by the CASA system showed that the various parameters were similar to those of GOGD (P>0.05). The membrane integrity, mitochondrial potential and the acrosome were not influenced by the treatment (P>0.05) nor by the dilutant used for cryopreservation (P>0.05). The spermatic morphology was also preserved by the different GOGD and GONM concentrations in the ACP® and TRIS dilutants, with no statistically significant differences (P<0.05). It was concluded that Numida meleagris egg yolk, as external membrane cryoproctant added to the dilutants ACP-101c® and TRIS, improved goat semen quality.

Abstract The psychrotrophic bacteria count and the profile of Gram-negative bacteria present in commercial Brazilian organic dairy products (27 samples, pasteurized whole milk, Minas Frescal cheese, and yoghurt, equally distributed) as well as the biofilm-producing capacity and the production of deteriorating enzymes were investigated. Most of the samples (59%) presented psychrotrophic bacteria counts higher than 4 log CFU/g, indicating problems in the microbiological quality of the products. The identification of Gram-negative bacteria revealed the presence of micro-organisms that can be potentially harmful (39.4% Acinetobacter baumanii/calcoaceticus, 23.2% Burkoderia pseudomallei, 10.1% Halfnia alvei) and/or deteriorating micro-organisms (6.1% Pseudomonas aeruginosa) with the capacity of producing proteases (36.4%), lecithinases (41.4%), and lipases (4%). Roughly, 68.7% of micro-organisms were non-producers of biofilms, 28.3% were medium biofilm producers, and 3.0% were high biofilm producers. The findings suggest there are problems related to the good practices of obtaining organic milk and in the manufacture of dairy products.

Abstract Although quite controversial from the point of view of food safety, a considerable number of people across different age and socioeconomic groups consume raw goat’s milk. Even if refrigerated after milking, raw goat's milk may still be susceptible to the lipolytic and proteolytic actions of psychrotrophic microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas. In this study, Pseudomonas sp. from 21 refrigerated raw goat’s milk samples were characterized. All samples were freely commercialized, without any type of inspection, by small producers and markets from different regions of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A total of 136 isolates were identified, most of which belonged to the species, P. putida, P. koreensis, P. monteilii, and P. fluorescens. The production of protease and lipase varied according to the incubation temperature. We found that 91.4% of the Pseudomonas isolates were susceptible to all antibiotics tested. None of the isolates exhibited a multidrug-resistance phenotype. None of the raw goat’s milk samples contained detectable antibiotic residues, which may explain the very low frequency of resistant bacteria. Although Pseudomonas is not considered a typical food-related pathogen, its presence indicate that the determination of microbiological standards for raw goat's milk and greater control of the commercialization of this product, are necessary.

Resumo Objetivo Descrever os procedimentos que antecederam a intervenção da terapia ocupacional em pacientes com dificuldades comunicativas internados em uma Unidade de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). Método Pesquisa-ação realizada em uma UTI de um hospital de referência na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, no período de junho a dezembro de 2018, com pacientes com restrição de comunicação verbal, profissionais de saúde e familiares. Os instrumentos utilizados foram: 1) avaliação da condição clínica e a biografia do paciente; 2) registro sobre informações básicas à beira do leito; 3) protocolo de avaliação de habilidades comunicativas; 4) avaliação do perfil ocupacional do sujeito apoiada em um conjunto de pranchas de Comunicação Alternativa e Ampliada (CAA); e 5) escala de satisfação do paciente aplicada antes e após a intervenção. Resultados Dentre os procedimentos, destacaram-se as ações que antecederam a entrada do profissional na unidade e o delineamento de etapas que foram iniciadas com a busca ativa; a preparação do material e os cuidados necessários; o uso do protocolo de avaliação e as habilidades comunicativas; a avaliação do perfil ocupacional; a oferta e o treino do kit básico de pranchas de CAA; a avaliação da satisfação do paciente em relação à sua habilidade comunicativa; o registro no prontuário e a orientação aos familiares e profissionais de saúde. Conclusão Os dados mostraram que há uma série de procedimentos que antecedem a introdução da CAA e que devem ser consideradas e valorizadas pelo terapeuta ocupacional no favorecimento do gerenciamento da comunicação do paciente com restrição verbal em UTI.

Abstract Objective To describe the procedures before the intervention of occupational therapy with patients having communicative difficulties and hospitalized in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Method Action research performed at an ICU of a reference hospital in the city of Rio de Janeiro, from June to December of 2018 in patients with restricted verbal communication, health professionals, and family members. We used the following instruments: 1) assessment form of the patient's clinical condition and biography; 2) registration of basic information at the bedside; 3) communication skills assessment protocol; 4) assessment of the patient's occupational profile supported by a set of Alternative and Extended Communication (AEC) boards; 5) patient satisfaction scale applied before and after the intervention. Results Among the procedures, we highlight the actions before the entry of the professional in the unit and the outline of steps that were started with the active search; the preparation of the material and the necessary care; the use of the assessment protocol and communicative skills in the hospital context; occupational profile assessment; the offering and training of the basic AEC board kit; the assessment of patient satisfaction regarding their communicative ability; the registration in the medical record and guidance to family members and health professionals. Conclusion The data showed that previous factors of the AEC should be considered and valued by the occupational therapist in favor of the management of communication of the patient with verbal restriction in the ICU.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever as atividades utilizadas em uma brinquedoteca terapêutica com grupos de crianças e pré-adolescentes com síndrome de Down e correlacioná-las com a faixa etária. Para tanto, foi realizado um estudo analítico de 297 atividades desenvolvidas com 44 participantes com síndrome de Down de 2 a 13 anos, com base na análise da Ficha de Registro de Atividades. Para atender ao primeiro objetivo, foi feita a análise univariada descritiva, utilizando-se frequências absolutas e relativas para as variáveis categóricas. A fim de responder ao segundo objetivo, que comparou as variáveis categóricas relacionadas às atividades desenvolvidas na brinquedoteca com as faixas etárias, foi feita a análise bivariada, empregando-se o teste qui-quadrado (X2). Os resultados mostraram que foi utilizado um conjunto variado de atividades, em especial aquelas envolvendo música, brincadeiras de empilhar, encaixar e construir para o grupo de 2 a 3 anos e 11 meses; atividades expressivas para o grupo de 4 a 7 anos e 11 meses; e jogos, atividades de matemática, leitura, escrita, e aquelas relacionadas ao desenvolvimento de linguagem para o grupo de 8 a 13 anos. O estudo trouxe dados relevantes para o desenvolvimento da terapia ocupacional na área da infância, em especial no trabalho com crianças com deficiência intelectual.

Abstract The objective of this work is to describe the activities used in a therapeutic toy library with groups of children and pre-teens with Down syndrome and to correlate them with the age group. For that, an analytical study of 297 activities developed with 44 participants with Down syndrome from 2 to 13 years old was performed, based on the analysis of the Activity Record Sheet. To meet the first objective, a descriptive univariate analysis was performed, using absolute and relative frequencies for the categorical variables. In order to answer the second objective, which compared the categorical variables related to the activities developed in the toy library with the age groups, a bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test (X2). The results showed that a varied set of activities was used, especially those involving music, stacking, fitting and building games for the 2 to 3 years old and 11 months old group; expressive activities for the 4 to 7 years old and 11 months old group; and games, math activities, reading, writing, and activities related to language development for the 8 to 13 years old group. The study brought relevant data to the development of Occupational Therapy in the childhood area, especially in working with children with intellectual disabilities.

Resumo Introdução O brincar é fundamental para o desenvolvimento infantil e um importante recurso no trabalho com crianças, mas é importante considerar que os brinquedos e brincadeiras vêm se transformando e incluíram os jogos virtuais, que passaram a ser utilizados nos atendimentos de terapia ocupacional. Objetivo Analisar três plataformas e seis jogos virtuais, descrever a participação de crianças com síndrome de Down no uso de jogos interativos, identificar a plataforma mais acessível e a preferência das crianças. Método Trata-se de um estudo descritivo exploratório, com abordagem quantitativa, que contou com a participação de 13 crianças com síndrome de Down, com idades entre 10 e 13 anos, no uso de seis jogos interativos das plataformas Leap Motion, Nintendo Wii® e Timocco. Resultados Verificou-se que, em relação às variáveis de desempenho das crianças, a Plataforma Timocco alcançou as maiores médias, com diferenças estatisticamente significativas em: “saber o que fazer”, “respeitar a distância indicada para a plataforma”, “jogar com independência” e “desempenho dos jogadores”. A correlação entre as variáveis “desempenho dos jogadores” e a “demonstração de interesse” apresentou resultado significativo. Na avaliação das crianças sobre a plataforma e o jogo preferido, a escolhida foi a Timocco, com o jogo Falling fruits. As razões para a escolha incluíram o fato de o jogo ser divertido, a criança ter tido bom desempenho e ser fácil de jogar. Conclusão A plataforma Timocco apresentou maior média em todas as variáveis pesquisadas, apontando para a importância da realização de novos estudos em que os jogos da plataforma possam ser utilizados como recurso terapêutico ocupacional com crianças com síndrome de Down, com o objetivo de estimular o desenvolvimento da aprendizagem.

Abstract Introduction Playing is fundamental for children's development and an important resource in working with children, but it is important to consider that toys and games have been transformed and the virtual games were included, which started to be used in Occupational Therapy. Objective To analyze three platforms and six virtual games, to describe the participation of children with Down syndrome in the use of interactive games and to identify the most accessible platform, and the preference of the children. Method This is an exploratory, descriptive study with a quantitative approach involving 13 children with Down syndrome, aged between 10 and 13 years old, using six interactive games from Leap Motion, Nintendo platforms Wii® and Timocco. Results In the children's performance variables, the Timocco Platform reached the highest averages, with statistically significant differences in: “knowing what to do,” “respecting the distance indicated for the platform,” “playing with independence,” and “players´ performance.” The correlation between the “players´ performance” and the “demonstration of interest” variables presented significant results. In children’s evaluation on the platform and the preferred game, Timocco was chosen, with the game called Falling fruits. The reasons for this choice included the fact that the game was fun, the child’s good performance and is easy to play. Conclusion The Timocco platform presented a higher average in all the variables studied, pointing to the importance of carrying out new studies in which the platform games can be used as an occupational therapy resource for children with Down syndrome, aiming to stimulate the development learning.
