Mutagenic effect of a commercial fungicide on Rana catesbeiana and Leptodactylus latrans tadpoles

Abstract We have examined the mutagenic effects of the fungicide Elatus® on tadpoles of Rana catesbeiana and Leptodactylus latrans. Sixty-four tadpoles of each species have been exposed to three concentrations of Elatus® (10, 20, and 50 µg/L-1) during 96 hours. We’ve carried out the micronucleus test (MN) and erythrocyte nuclear abnormalities (ENAs) in 32 tadpoles of each species, the others 32 tadpoles of each species remained in a solution free of Elatus® during 96 hours, in order to assess the ability to recover from the damage caused by the fungicide. There was significant difference in MNs frequency between the treatment exposed to 50µg/L-1 and the control groups for R. catesbeiana, while for L. latrans, we’ve found difference between the treatment of 20 µg/L-1, followed by a period without exposure to the contaminant and the control group when all ENAs were analyzed. When we compared the two species, R. catesbeiana presented a higher frequency of MNs than L. latrans in the treatment exposed to 50 µg/L-1of the fungicide. Our findings highlight the need to monitor amphibians in places where this product is widely used.

The mesoporous material Al-Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 (Al-MCM-41) was successfully obtained from kaolin, a low cost raw material, by means of hydrothermal route. The process of synthesis of Al-MCM-41 was based on calcination of kaolin, dealumination by acid treatment, hydrothermal synthesis in alkaline medium and surfactant extraction. The characterization of the obtained mesoporous material was carried out by techniques such as: X-ray diffraction, infrared vibrational spectroscopy, 29Si and 27Al solid state nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and N2 adsorption-desorption. The X-ray diffraction at low angles allowed the determination of the cell parameter, which was 4.02 nm. The analyses of scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed important morphological properties of the synthesized material. N2 adsorption/desorption showed a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area of 1,303 m2 g-1, pore volume of 1.23 cm3 g-1 and average diameter of 2.45 nm. The mesoporous material presented a maximum adsorption capacity of 316 mg g-1 for the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) in a concentration typical of industrial effluents, which makes it a potential adsorbent for MB removal from wastewaters.

Resumen Esta investigación se llevó a cabo para evaluar los efectos de los extractos de Rheedia longifolia (Clusiaceae), Garcinia xanthochymus (Clusiaceae), Plumbago scandens (Plumbaginaceae) Hovenia dulcis (Rhamnaceae), Malpighia glabra (Malpighiaceae), Euphorbia tirucalli (Euphorbiaceae) y Nerium adelfa (Apocynaceae) sobre la tasa incubación de los huevos de Dermacentor (Anocentor) nitens y Ripicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) en concentraciones de 1.000 ppm. Los extractos de R. longifolia, H. dulcis, M. glabra y E. tirucalli retrasaron significativamente la incubación de los huevos de R. sanguineus en tres días, pero los grupos tratados con los extractos de G. xanthochymus y P. scandens eclosionaron después de 14 días. Para las garrapatas D. (A.) nitens, los extractos de H. dulcis y N. adelfa retrasaron la eclosión de los huevos durante tres días, sin embargo, la acción de los extractos de R. longifolia, G. xanthochymus, P. scandens y E. tirucalli causó un retraso mayor de siete días. Para los dos tipos de garrapatas, los huevos del grupo control tardaron un día para eclosionar. Los extractos H. dulcis y M. glabra fueron eficaces in vitro en huevos de R. sanguineus (89 %) y D. (A.) nitens (100 %) y se pueden considerar como candidatos potenciales para el control biológico de estas garrapatas.
Abstract This investigation was carried out to evaluate the effects of the plant extracts of Rheedia longifolia (Clusiaceae), Garcinia xanthochymus (Clusiaceae), Plumbago scandens (Plumbaginaceae), Hovenia dulcis (Rhamnaceae), Malpighia glabra (Malpighiaceae), Euphorbia tirucalli (Euphorbiaceae) and Nerium adelfa (Apocynaceae) on eggs of Dermacentor (Anocentor) nitens and Ripicephalus sanguineus (Acari: Ixodidae) at concentrations of 1,000 ppm. The extracts had a significant effect on the hatching rate of eggs. The extracts of R. longifolia, H. dulcis, M. glabra and E. tirucalli delayed the hatching of R. sanguineus eggs by three days; however, the group treated with the extracts of G. xanthochymus and P. scandens did not hatch until day fourteen. For the tick D. (A.) nitens, extracts of H. dulcis and N. oleander delayed egg hatching by three days; however, the action of extracts from R. longifolia, G. xanthochymus, P. scandens and E. tirucalli caused a delay of seven days. For the control groups of both species, eggs hatched in one day. H. dulcis and M. glabra were effective in vitro on eggs of R. sanguineus and D. (A.) nitens (89 and 100 %, respectively), and can be considered to be potential candidates for the biocontrol of those ticks.

RESUMO A atividade fungiostática pode, principalmente durante o armazenamento, levar à rápida deterioração na qualidade nutricional dos grãos e reduzir seu aproveitamento e inutilização em processo industrial pela contaminação com toxinas (aflatoxinas entre outras). Dentre as tecnologias apontadas como promissoras no controle desses microrganismos se destaca a ozonização. Objetivou-se, com este estudo, determinar a concentração e o tempo de saturação do gás ozônio em grãos de arroz e definir o tempo de ozonização eficaz na desinfecção de fungos e leveduras. Grãos de arroz (14,3% b.u.) foram inoculados com Penicillium spp. e Aspergillus spp. e posteriormente sua ozonização foi realizada na concentração de 10,13 mg L-1, em fluxo contínuo de 1,0 L min -1, em cinco períodos de exposição (12, 24, 36, 48 e 60 h). A concentração e o tempo de saturação do gás ozônio nos grãos de arroz foram de 5 mg L-1 e 13,97 min, respectivamente. Observou-se redução em 3,8 ciclos log (100%) na contagem de leveduras e completa inibição para os fungos dos gêneros Aspergillus e Penicillium nos grãos ozonizados.
ABSTRACT The fungistatic activity, especially during storage, can lead to rapid deterioration in the nutritional quality of grains, and reduce their use and disposal in industrial process due to contamination with toxins (aflatoxins and others). Among the technologies identified as promising in controlling these microorganisms, there is ozonation. The objective of this study was to determine the concentration and the saturation time of ozone gas in rice grains and set the effective ozonation disinfection time in filamentous fungi and yeast. Rice grains (14.3% w.b.) were inoculated with Penicillium spp. and Aspergillus spp. and, subsequently, ozonized at the concentration of 10.13 mg L-1, under continuous flow of 1.0 L min-1, in five periods of exposure (12, 24, 36, 48 and 60 h). Ozone gas concentration and saturation time in rice grains were 5.00 mg L-1 and 13.97 min, respectively. There was a reduction of 3.8 log cycles (100%) in the count of yeasts and complete inhibition of fungal from the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium in ozonized grains.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

In the present investigation we evaluate methods for the isolation and growth of marine-derived fungal strains in artificial media for the production of secondary metabolites. Inoculation of marine macroorganisms fragments in Petri dishes proved to be the most convenient procedure for the isolation of the largest number of strains. Among the growth media used, 3% malt extract showed the best result for strains isolation and growth, and yielded the largest number of strains from marine macroorganisms. The percentage of strains isolated using each of the growth media which yielded cytotoxic and/or antibiotic extracts was in the range of 23-35%, regardless of the growth media used. Further investigation of extracts obtained from different marine-derived fungal strains yielded several bioactive secondary metabolites, among which (E)-4-methoxy-5-(3-methoxybut-1-enyl)-6-methyl-2H-pyran-2-one is a new metabolite isolated from the Penicillium paxilli strain Ma(G)K.

O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar a frequência e avaliar a influência da idade, sexo e raça na soropositividade anti-Babesia canis, Toxoplasma gondii, Leishmania (L.) chagasi e Neospora caninum, por meio da reação de imunofluorescência indireta (RIFI), em amostras de soros coletadas de cães atendidos em nove clínicas veterinárias particulares do município de Lavras, MG, no período de agosto de 2000 a abril de 2002. De 300 cães, 73,3% foram soropositivos (RIFI > 1:80) para B. canis, e houve um aumento significativo de reagentes (p < 0,05) nos animais adultos se comparados com os jovens. Apenas um cão (0,3%), proveniente do município de Belo Horizonte, apresentou anticorpos anti-L. (L.) chagasi (RIFI > 1:40). Para T. gondii, de 218 cães, 60,7% foram positivos (RIFI > 1:16). Em 228 amostras de soros, 3,1% foram positivas (RIFI > 1:50) para N. caninum. Infecções por B. canis e T. gondii são endêmicas em cães atendidos em clínicas veterinárias particulares em Lavras. Não há evidências de casos autóctones de leishmaniose visceral canina em Lavras. Além disso, a infecção por N. caninum é pouco comum em cães criados na zona urbana do município.
The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency and evaluate the influence of age, sex and breed in seropositivity anti-Babesia canis, Toxoplasma gondii, Leishmania (L.) chagasi and Neospora caninum, by means of the indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), in serum samples collected from dogs attended in nine private veterinary clinics in municipality of Lavras, Minas Gerais, Brazil, from August 2000 to April 2002. Of 300 dogs, 73.3% were seropositive (IFAT > 1:80) to B. canis, and there was a significant increase (p < 0.05) of the reagent in adult animals when compared with young. Only one dog (0.3%) from Belo Horizonte there was antibodies anti-L. (L.) chagasi (IFAT > 1:40). T. gondii, of 218 dogs, 60.7% were positive (IFAT > 1:16). In 228 serum samples, 3.1% were positive (IFAT > 1:50) to N. caninum. Infections to B. canis and T. gondii occur as endemic form in dogs examined at private veterinary clinics in Lavras. There is no evidence that there are autochthonous cases of canine visceral leishmaniosis in Lavras. Besides this the infection by N. caninum is uncommon in dogs breed at the urbane zone of the municipality.

O óleo essencial e o extrato etanólico obtidos a partir de folhas de Myrtus communis foram avaliados quanto 'a atividade inibitória frente a vários microrganismos. Os halos de inibição de crescimento foram avaliados através das técnicas de "template" e difusão em disco para as linhagens de Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis e Serratia marcescens. Os resultados obtidos evidenciaram que o óleo de M. communis apresentou atividade antibacteriana superior ao extrato etanólico frente a todas as bactérias. A atividade demonstrada tanto para o óleo como para o extrato etanólico frente a algumas linhagens, foi melhor evidenciada pela técnica "template". E. coli foi resistente ao óleo e extrato etanólico testados.
We have studied the crude essential oil and crude ethanol extract from Myrtus communis leaves for possible antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria. The halos of growth inhibition had been evaluated through the techniques of "template" and disk diffusion assays to the strains Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Serratia marcescens. The results demonstrated that M. communis oil presented superior antibacterial activity to all strains. The template assay was the best method to determine the antibacterial activity exhibited by the oil and extract to the strains. E. coli was resistant to the oil and ethanol extract tested.

PURPOSE: To compare the effectiveness of pelvic floor exercises, electrical stimulation, vaginal cones, and no active treatment in women with urodynamic stress urinary incontinence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred eighteen subjects were randomly selected to recieve pelvic floor exercises (n=31), ES (n=30), vaginal cones (n=27), or no treatment (untreated control) (n=30). Women were evaluated before and after completion of six months of treatment by the pad test, quality of life questionnaire (I-QOL), urodynamic test, voiding diary, and subjective response. RESULTS: In the objective evaluation, we observed a statistically significant reduction in the pad test (p=0.003), in the number of stress urinary episodes (p<0.001), and a significant improvement in the quality of life (p<0.001) in subjects who used pelvic floor exercises, electrical stimulation, and vaginal cones compared to the control group. No significant difference was found between groups in the urodynamic parameters. In the subjective evaluation, 58%, 55%, and 54% of women who had used pelvic floor exercises, electrical stimulation, and vaginal cones, respectively, reported being satisfied after treatment. In the control group, only 21% patients were satisfied with the treatment. CONCLUSION: Based on this study, pelvic floor exercises, electrical stimulation, and vaginal cones are equally effective treatments and are far superior to no treatment in women with urodynamic stress urinary incontinence.
