ABSTRACT Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is the most economically important leafy vegetable in Brazil, with the crisp type being the most popular among producers. However, in regions with hot climates, lettuce has production limitations due to bolting, requiring knowledge on the behavior of cultivars available on the market. Thus, the objective of the present study was to characterize the performance of crisp lettuce cultivars in terms of their productive, physiological, and postharvest quality aspects when grown under hydroponic cultivation and high temperature conditions. The assay was performed in a greenhouse and the plants were grown in a hydroponic system of DFT type. The average temperature during the experiment was 30.33 °C. The experimental design used was completely randomized with nine treatments (Veneranda, Cristina, Olinda, Mônica, Cinderela, Grand Rapids, Itapuã Super, Crocantela, and Simpson Black Seed), with four replications. The cultivars were analyzed in terms of their productive, physiological, and postharvest quality performances. The Olinda and Cristina cultivars showed the best performance in growth, physiological, and postharvest variables. However, the cultivars had distinct sensory characteristics. Bolting negatively affected gas exchange, production, and postharvest quality of lettuce cultivars Veneranda, Mônica, Grand Rapids, and Cinderela. In addition, it was observed that the pigment content was not determinant for the expression of bolting. Therefore, this study recommends the use of cultivars Olinda and Cristina for the hydroponic cultivation under high temperature conditions. RESUMO A alface (Lactuca sativa) é a hortaliça folhosa de maior importância econômica no Brasil, sendo o tipo crespa a mais popular entre os produtores. Entretanto, em regiões de clima quente, a alface apresenta limitações de produção devido ao pendoamento precoce, exigindo o conhecimento do comportamento das cultivares disponíveis no mercado. Assim, o objetivo do presente estudo foi caracterizar o desempenho de cultivares de alface crespa quanto aos aspectos produtivos, fisiológicos e de qualidade pós-colheita, cultivadas em condições de cultivo hidropônico e alta temperatura. O ensaio foi conduzido em condição de casa de vegetação, sendo as plantas cultivadas em sistema hidropônico tipo DFT. A temperatura média durante o experimento foi de 30,33 °C. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado com nove tratamentos (Veneranda, Cristina, Olinda, Mônica, Cinderela, Grand Rapids, Itapuã Super, Crocantela e Simpson Black Seed) e quatro repetições. As cultivares foram analisadas quanto ao seu desempenho produtivo, fisiológico e de qualidade pós-colheita. As cultivares Olinda e Cristina apresentaram melhor desempenho nos parâmetros de crescimento, fisiológicos e pós-colheita. Entretanto, estas cultivares apresentaram características sensoriais distintas. Verificou-se que o pendoamento precoce afetou negativamente as trocas gasosas, a produção e a qualidade pós-colheita das cultivares de alface Veneranda, Mônica, Grand Rapids e Cinderela. Além disso, observou-se que o teor de pigmentos não foi determinante para a expressão do pendoamento. Portanto, este estudo recomenda o uso das cultivares Olinda e Cristina para o cultivo hidropônico em condições de alta temperatura. Resumen La rabia es una enfermedad vírica prevenible mediante la inmunización. Esta afecta a personas de más de 150 países ocasionando decenas de defunciones, principalmente en los continentes de Asia y África. El 40 % de casos se dan en niños menores de 15 años, siendo el perro la principal fuente de contagio a humanos y del 99% de las muertes por esa causa; así, la vacunación de estos animales resulta la principal medida preventiva que se recomienda.

Abstract Rabies is a viral disease preventable through immunization. This disease affects more than 150 countries, causing dozens of deaths, mainly in the continents of Asia and Africa. 40% of cases occur in children under 15 years of age; the dog is the main source of 99% of deaths from rabies. For this reason, rabies disease can be prevented by vaccinating dogs and avoiding bites.

ABSTRACT: The cheese after processing, generates whey, which is a residue that has potential benefit to human health. However, there are still few studies that seek to evaluate the composition and potential benefits of goat milk whey, even though it is a promising dairy source. Despite this, the large-scale generation of this waste can favor the environmental impact when improperly disposed of. Given this, the use of all content of dairy production can reverse this impact and increase the income of the dairy industry. Thus, this research prepared a powdered product based on goat’s milk whey from the spray drying technique and evaluate its physicochemical composition by chemical analytical methods and protein profile through polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The elaborated product had a higher carbohydrate content than protein, and the identification of protein fractions showed that the most expressive bands represented beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactoalbumin. Therefore, the elaborated product has the potential to generate novel products for human consumption and with potential health benefits. RESUMO: O queijo após processado gera o soro de leite, sendo este um resíduo que possui potencial benefício à saúde humana. No entanto, ainda são poucos os estudos que buscam avaliar a composição e os potenciais benefícios do soro de leite de cabra, mesmo esta sendo uma fonte láctea promissora. Apesar disso, a geração em larga escala deste resíduo pode favorecer o impacto ambiental quando descartado inadequadamente. Em vista disso, a utilização de todo conteúdo gerado na produção de lácteos pode reverter este impacto e aumentar o rendimento da indústria de laticínios. Diante disso, é importante buscar o desenvolvimento de novos produtos para favorecer a redução do impacto gerado. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo elaborar um produto em pó, à base de soro de leite de cabra a partir da secagem pela técnica de spray drying e avaliar sua composição físico-química por métodos químicos analíticos e perfil proteico através da eletroforese em gel de poliacrilamida. O produto elaborado apresentou maior teor de carboidratos do que proteína, e a identificação das frações proteicas mostrou que as bandas mais expressivas representavam beta-lactoglobulina e alfa-lactoalbumina. Portanto, o produto elaborado apresenta potencial para geração de novos produtos para consumo humano e com prováveis benefícios à saúde. Resumen Objetivo Evaluar los factores asociados al aumento de peso interdialítico en usuarios de servicios de hemodiálisis en una región metropolitana de Brasil. Métodos Estudio epidemiológico transversal que incluyó 1.024 individuos con enfermedad renal crónica en hemodiálisis en Brasil. El aumento de peso interdialítico se evaluó mediante el porcentaje de aumento de peso entre una sesión de hemodiálisis y otra. Las variables incluidas en el análisis de regresión logística binaria fueron seleccionadas considerando p< 0,10 en la prueba bivariada. Resultados Se demostró que tener más años de estudio (OR=0,537;IC 95 % = 0,310–0,931; p=0,027) y sobrepeso (OR=0,661;IC 95 % = 0,461–0,948; p=0,024) u obesidad ( OR=0,387;IC 95 % = 0,246–0,608; p=<0,001) redujo las chances de que los usuarios presenten un elevado aumento de peso interdialítico. Usuarios sin trabajo remunerado (OR=2,025; IC 95 % = 1,218–3,365; p=0,007) y que no adoptaban medidas para reducir la sal (OR=1,694; IC 95 % = 1,085–2,645; p=0,020) tuvieron más chances de aumento de peso interdialítico. Conclusión Los resultados señalan una relación entre el aumento de peso interdialítico y la ausencia de trabajo remunerado y la no adopción de medidas para reducir la ingesta de sal en la dieta. Por lo tanto, el conocimiento sobre estos factores asociados puede ser una alternativa importante para la orientación individualizada de esta población. Abstract Objectives The study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with interdialytic weight gain in users of haemodialysis services in a metropolitan region of Brazil. Methods This is an cross-sectional epidemiological study with 1,024 individuals with chronic kidney disease on haemodialysis in Brazil. Interdialytic weight gain was evaluated by the percentage weight gain between one haemodialysis session and another. The variables included in the binary logistic regression analysis were selected by considering p< 0.10 in the bivariate test. Results We demonstrated that having more years of study (OR=0.537;CI 95% = 0.310–0.931; p=0.027) and be overweight (OR=0.661;CI 95% = 0.461–0.948; p=0.024) or obese (OR=0.387;CI 95% = 0.246–0.608; p=<0.001) reduced the chances of users having high interdialytic weight gain. Those who did not have paid work (OR=2.025;CI 95% = 1.218–3.365; p=0.007) and not adopting measures to reduce salt increased (OR=1.694;CI 95% = 1.085–2.645; p=0.020) increased the chances of interdialytic weight. Conclusion The results point to an association between the increase in interdialytic weight gain and the absence of paid work and the non-adoption of measures to reduce salt intake in the diet. Therefore, the need for knowledge about these associated factors can be an important alternative for the individual targeting of this population. Resumo Objetivo Avaliar os fatores associados ao ganho de peso interdialítico em usuários de serviços de hemodiálise em uma Região Metropolitana do Brasil. Resumen Objetivo Evaluar la presencia de isquemia en la parte distal de las manos de los miembros superiores con fístula arteriovenosa (FAV) de pacientes en terapia de reemplazo renal (TRR) a través de la termografía infrarroja. Métodos Muestra compuesta por 15 pacientes en TRR por hemodiálisis mediante FAV que respondieron un cuestionario elaborado por los propios autores con las siguientes variables: datos sociodemográficos, diagnóstico, signos vitales y datos sobre la FAV. Para obtener los termogramas de las manos con y sin FAV, se utilizó una cámara termográfica infrarroja C5, FLIR Systems, ubicada a 50 cm de las manos de los participantes, favoreciendo el encuadramiento bilateral y encuadrando ambas manos. Los datos obtenidos se organizaron en una planilla de Excel 2011® y se compararon estadísticamente con el programa Microcal Origin 6.0, para evaluar si había diferencia entre los promedios de temperatura. Resultados Con relación a las variables sociodemográficas, el género masculino fue predominante, grupo de edad promedio de 45 años, educación primaria (incompleta/completa), casados y provenientes de otros municipios. La termografía demostró que hay diferencia de temperatura entre las manos con FAV y sin FAV, con una variación de temperatura de 1,78°C (± DP 1,99°C), menor en las manos con FAV. Conclusión El análisis de la distribución de la sangre de las manos por medio de termografía puede ofrecer evidencias sobre la microcirculación periférica y guiar el diagnóstico temprano y el tratamiento de la isquemia inducida por FAV en individuos en TRR, como una herramienta innovadora de diagnóstico auxiliar de las complicaciones de los accesos vasculares de pacientes en hemodiálisis. Abstract Objective To assess the presence of ischemia in the distal portion of the hands of the upper limbs with arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in patients undergoing renal replacement therapy (RRT) using infrared thermography. Method The sample consisted of 15 patients on RRT via hemodialysis using an AVF who answered a questionnaire prepared by the authors themselves with sociodemographic data, diagnosis, vital signs and data on AVF. To obtain thermograms of hands with and without AVF, a C5 infrared thermographic camera, FLIR Systems, was used, fixed 50 cm from participants’ hands, favoring bilateral framing of both hands. The data obtained were organized in an Excel 2011® spreadsheet and statistically compared using the Microcal Origin 6.0 program to assess whether there was a difference between temperature averages. Resumo Objetivo Avaliar a presença de isquemia na porção distal das mãos dos membros superiores com Fistula Arteriovenosa (FAV) de pacientes em Terapia Renal Substitutiva (TRS) através da termografia por infravermelho. Método Amostra composta por 15 pacientes em TRS por hemodiálise por meio de FAV que responderam um questionário elaborado pelos próprios autores com as seguintes variáveis: dados sociodemográficos, diagnóstico, sinais vitais e dados sobre a FAV. Para obtenção dos termogramas das mãos com e sem FAV foi utilizado uma câmera termográfica por infravermelho C5, FLIR Systems, fixada a 50 cm das mãos dos participantes, privilegiando o enquadramento bilateral enquadrando ambas as mãos. Os dados obtidos foram organizados em planilha de Excel 2011® e comparados estatisticamente utilizando o programa Microcal Origin 6.0, para avaliar se existia diferença entre as médias de temperatura. Resultados Com relação as variáveis sociodemográficas, o gênero masculino foi o predominante, faixa etária com média de 45 anos, ensino fundamental (incompleto/completo), casados e provenientes de outros municípios. A termografia demonstrou que há diferença de temperatura entre as mãos com FAV e sem FAV, com variação na temperatura de 1,78°C (± DP 1,99°C), menor para as mãos com FAV. Conclusão A análise da distribuição do sangue das mãos por meio da termografia pode fornecer evidências sobre a microcirculação periférica e orientar o diagnóstico precoce e o tratamento da isquemia induzida por FAV em indivíduos em TRS, como ferramenta inovadora de diagnóstico auxiliar das complicações dos acessos venosos de pacientes em hemodiálise. Abstract A checklist of recent and fossil fishes of the Order Characiformes is presented herein and believed to be complete through 2022. A total of 47 collaborators checked and provided information about their taxa of expertise. The list is arranged in alphabetical order by family and then genus and includes all available synonyms. From a total of 3,087 species group names and 527 genus group names, 2,334 species are currently treated as valid, and assigned to 301 genera and 24 families. This total includes 25 species known only from the fossil record, of which 21 are assigned to eight extant families and four are Incertae sedis in Characiformes, but does not include five species based on fossil which were wrongly treated in Characiformes. The status of 79 nominal species remains unresolved. When there are two competing hypotheses about the validity of a name, one of them is chosen and the alternate interpretation is provided in the remark section of that name. Distributional summaries are presented as numbers that correspond to areas for which there is a record of occurrence of the species. Resumo Uma lista de peixes recentes e fósseis da Ordem Characiformes é apresentada e acredita-se que a lista esteja completa até 2022. Ao todo, 47 colaboradores verificaram e forneceram informações sobre táxons de sua especialidade. A lista está organizada em ordem alfabética por família e em seguida gênero e inclui todos os sinônimos disponíveis. De um total de 3.087 nomes de grupos de espécies e 527 nomes de grupos de gêneros, 2.334 espécies são atualmente tratadas como válidas e atribuídas a 301 gêneros e 24 famílias. Este total inclui 25 espécies fósseis, das quais 21 são incluídas em oito famílias recentes e quatro são Incertae sedis em Characiformes, mas não inclui cinco espécies baseadas em fósseis que foram incorretamente consideradas como Characiformes. Abstract Objective the aim of this study was to analyze the influence of ozone therapy (OZN) on peri-implant bone repair in critical bones by installing osseointegrated implants in the tibia of ovariectomized rats. Methodology ovariectomy was performed on 30 Wistar rats, aged six months (Rattus novergicus), and, after 90 days, osseointegrated implants were installed in each tibial metaphysis. The study groups were divided into the animals that received intraperitoneal ozone at a concentration of 700 mcg/kg — OZ Group (n=15) — and a control group that received an intraperitoneal saline solution and, for this reason, was named the SAL group (n=15). The applications for both groups occurred during the immediate post-operative period on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th day post-surgery. At various stages (14, 42, and 60 days), the animals were euthanized, and tests were performed on their tibiae. These tests include histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses, computerized microtomography, sampling in light-cured resin for calcified sections, and confocal microscopy. The obtained data were then analyzed using One-way ANOVA and the Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, and student t-tests (P<0.05). Results our findings indicate that the OZ group (3.26±0.20 mm) showed better cellular organization and bone neoformation at 14 days (SAL group, 0.90±1.42 mm) (P=0.001). Immunohistochemistry revealed that osteocalcin labeling was moderate in the OZ group and mild in the SAL group at 14 and 42 days post-surgery. The data from the analysis of calcified tissues (microtomography, histometric, and bone dynamism analysis) at 60 days showed no statistically significant differences between the groups (P=0.32). Conclusion it was concluded that ozone therapy anticipated the initial phases of the peri-implant bone repair process. Abstract Omeprazole (OM), a temperature, pH, and moisture-sensitive drug, poses formulation challenges. This study delves into the complex development of OM pellets, focusing on the impact of buffering excipients on stability and release. Addressing the challenges of OM pellet stability requires a comprehensive compatibility and stress study involving key excipients. Binary mixtures of OM with dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate (DSPD), mannitol, hypromellose (Hyp), and polysorbate underwent scrutiny for possible incompatibilities, subjected to 40°C stress and 75% relative humidity. DSC, TGA, and ATR-FTIR analyses were conducted, with quantitative monitoring of OM by HPLC. Formulations with varied proportions of DSPD and Hyp were also stress-tested. While all excipients exhibited compatibility with OM, thermal analysis suggested a potential incompatibility between OM and mannitol, disproven by HPLC. Stress tests on diverse formulations confirmed their adequacy, maintaining OM content and impurities within acceptable limits. Increased Hyp reduced impurities, and its combination with DSPD further enhanced stability. ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: The prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased in the recent decades, along with the number of patients in the terminal stages of this disease, requiring transplantation. Some skin disorders are more frequent in patients with CKD and in renal transplant recipients (RTR). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of skin diseases in RTR and patients with CKD receiving conservative treatment. DESIGN AND SETTING: This observational cross-sectional study recruited consecutive patients with CKD and RTR from a nephrology clinic at a teaching hospital in Brazil between 2015 and 2020. METHODS: Quantitative, descriptive, and analytical approaches were used. The sample was selected based on convenience sampling. Data were collected from dermatological visits and participants’ medical records. RESULTS: Overall, 308 participants were included: 206 RTR (66.9%, median age: 48 years, interquartile range [IQR] 38.0–56.0, 63.6% men) and 102 patients with CKD (33.1%, median age: 61.0 years, IQR 50.0–71.2, 48% men). The frequency of infectious skin diseases (39.3% vs. 21.6% P = 0.002) were higher in RTR than in patients with CKD. Neoplastic skin lesions were present in nine (4.4%) RTR and in only one (1.0%) patient with CKD. Among the RTR, the ratio of basal cell carcinoma to squamous cell carcinoma was 2:1. CONCLUSIONS: This study revealed that an increased frequency of infectious skin diseases may be expected in patients who have undergone kidney transplantation. Abstract This study aimed to identify dietary patterns and to evaluate the association between body image perception and these patterns among schoolchildren. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 385 schoolchildren (both sexes, 10-17 years old) from four public schools in Salvador, Brazil. Two non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls were applied, and the dietary pattern was determined by Exploratory Factor Analysis after adjustment of dietary data using the Multiple Source Method. To evaluate body image perception, the Brazilian body shape silhouette was used. The associations between body image perception and dietary patterns using the polytomous logistic regression model adjusted for covariables was assessed. Three dietary patterns were obtained: “Western standard,” unhealthy, “healthy pattern” and “typical dishes/ junk food.” After adjustment, adolescents who wished for a slimmer silhouette (2.48 [95%CI: 1.04-6.11], 3.49 [95%CI: 1.35-9.05] and 2.87 [95%CI: 1.13-7.26]) were more likely to adhere to the quintiles with the lowest consumption of the Western standard, compared to those satisfied with their body image. No associations were identified in the other two dietary patterns. Resumo Este estudo objetivou identificar padrões alimentares e avaliar a associação entre percepção da imagem corporal e esses padrões em escolares. Um estudo transversal foi conduzido em 385 escolares (ambos os sexos, 10-17 anos de idade) de 4 escolas públicas de Salvador, Brasil. Dois recordatórios alimentares de 24h não consecutivos foram aplicados e o padrão alimentar foi determinado por Análise Fatorial Exploratória, após ajuste dos dados dietéticos pelo Multiple Source Method. Para avaliar percepção da imagem corporal, nós usamos uma escala brasileira de silhuetas. Avaliamos as associações entre percepção da imagem corporal e padrões alimentares usando o modelo de regressão logística politômica ajustado para covariáveis. Três padrões alimentares foram obtidos: “padrão ocidental”, “padrão saudável” e “comidas típicas/junk food”. Após ajuste, adolescentes que desejavam uma silhueta menor (2,48 [IC95%: 1,04-6,11], 3,49 [IC95%: 1,35-9,05] e 2,87 [IC95%: 1,13-7,26]) tinham mais chances de aderir aos quintis de menor consumo do padrão ocidental, comparados àqueles satisfeitos com sua imagem corporal. ABSTRACT Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative bacterium associated with the etiology of several gastrointestinal tract pathologies, and cagA-positive (cagA+) strains are found in populations with gastric ulcers and precancerous lesions, inducing pro-inflammatory responses. The development of neoplasms is related to microRNA (miRNA) dysregulation, indicating highly expressed miRNA-629. The article aims to correlate the expression level of miRNA-629 with the presence of H. pylori and the pathogenicity marker cagA. Methods: 203 gastric biopsy samples were evaluated from individuals with normal gastric tissue (n=60), gastritis (n=96), and gastric cancer (n=47) of both genders and over 18 years old. The samples were subdivided according to the presence or absence of H. pylori, detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RNA was extracted using a commercial kit and quantified. Complementary DNA (cDNA) was synthesized using commercial kits, and the relative expression was calculated using the 2-ΔΔCt method. Results: Individuals infected with H. pylori are nine times more likely to develop gastric cancer. Cancer patients appeared to have decreased expression of miRNA-629; however, the presence of the bacterium would not influence this reduction. Individuals in the cancer group showed lower miRNA-629 expression when cagA+; however, in the control group, the expression was higher when cagA+. Conclusion: H. pylori is a factor involved in the etiology and progression of gastric diseases. Reduction in miRNA-629 expression in cancer patients occurs independent of the presence of the bacterium, but when the cagA pathogenicity marker is present, it induces changes in the gene expression of the respective miRNA. RESUMO Contexto: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) é uma bactéria gram-negativa associada à etiologia de várias patologias do trato gastrointestinal, e cepas positivas para cagA (cagA+) são encontradas em populações com úlceras gástricas e lesões pré-cancerígenas, induzindo respostas pró-inflamatórias. O desenvolvimento de neoplasias está relacionado à desregulação do microRNA (miRNA), indicando miRNA-629 altamente expresso. O artigo tem como objetivo correlacionar o nível de expressão do miRNA-629 com a presença de H. pylori e o marcador de patogenicidade cagA. Métodos: Foram avaliadas 203 amostras de biópsia gástrica de indivíduos com tecido gástrico normal (n=60), gastrite (n=96) e câncer gástrico (n=47) de ambos os sexos e com mais de 18 anos. As amostras foram subdivididas de acordo com a presença ou ausência de H. pylori, detectado por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR). O RNA foi extraído usando um kit comercial e quantificado. O DNA complementar (cDNA) foi sintetizado usando kits comerciais, e a expressão relativa foi calculada usando o método 2-ΔΔCt. Resultados: Indivíduos infectados com H. pylori têm nove vezes mais chances de desenvolver câncer gástrico. Pacientes com câncer parecem ter diminuição da expressão do miRNA-629; no entanto, a presença da bactéria não influenciaria essa redução. Indivíduos no grupo do câncer apresentaram menor expressão do miRNA-629 quando cagA+; no entanto, no grupo controle, a expressão foi maior quando cagA+. Conclusão: H. pylori é um fator envolvido na etiologia e progressão das doenças gástricas. Abstract Initiatives that promote the inclusion of young girls in science areas through actions in schools, science museums, and universities have been developed in the country, resulting from investments made by public and private development agencies in the last ten years. In this article, we present a Project developed in cooperation between the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - Duque de Caxias campus and the Science and Life Museum, in the territory where they are located. The project includes a set of activities such as physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology workshops at the University, meetings with researchers at the museum, and the historical exhibition about women in science and math combined with a round table composed of invited researchers at schools. The object of the research presented is based on the set of questions that the students asked the researchers during the discussions in the round table, which were later analyzed using the technique of content analysis in the inductive perspective. The results show how important examples of women who have built careers in the exact sciences are for shaping the perception that these spaces can be occupied by female students in the future. The participants were curious about the universe presented and interested in the discussion about women in science. Resumo Iniciativas que promovem a inserção de jovens meninas nas áreas de ciências por meio de ações em escolas, museus de ciência e universidades vêm sendo desenvolvidas no país, resultantes de investimentos realizados por órgãos de fomento públicos e privados nos últimos dez anos. Neste artigo, apresentamos um projeto desenvolvido em cooperação entre a Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro - campus Duque de Caxias e o Museu Ciência e Vida, no território onde eles se encontram. O projeto contempla um conjunto de atividades tais como oficinas de física, química e nanotecnologia na Universidade, encontros com pesquisadoras no museu e exibição de exposições conjugadas com mesa-redonda composta por pesquisadoras convidadas, nas escolas. Essas mesas-redondas suscitaram discussões acerca das mulheres nas ciências exatas e áreas afins, e constituem o objeto desta pesquisa. As perguntas feitas às pesquisadoras durante esses encontros foram examinadas, posteriormente, por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo na perspectiva indutiva. Os resultados evidenciam a importância de exemplos de mulheres que tenham construído carreiras nas ciências exatas para a percepção de que esses espaços podem ser ocupados pelas alunas, futuramente. As participantes se mostraram curiosas sobre o universo apresentado e interessadas na discussão sobre mulheres na ciência. ABSTRACT: Bacteria of the genus Brachyspira can cause enteric diseases in birds; thus, this study evaluated the efficacy of the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique for the identification of B. pilosicoli, B. hyodysenteriae and B. intermedia using cecum samples fixed in formaldehyde from laying hens and commercial broiler breeders. Samples were collected from 112 birds aged between 35 and 82 weeks that originated from commercial laying and broilers farms. For the initial evaluation, spirochaetes were isolated from the cloacal swabs. Positive samples were analysed using qPCR to identify pathogenic species. Formalized cecum segments of these same birds were then analyzed using the FISH technique with labelled probes specific to B. pilosicoli, B. hyodysenteriae and B. intermedia. Forty isolates characteristic of Brachyspira were obtained, of which 14 were identified as B. hyodysenteriae and seven were identified as B. intermedia by qPCR; two samples were positive for both species, and 21 were not characterized. Using the FISH technique, 52 samples were positive for Brachyspira spp., 22 were positive for B. hyodysenteriae, 28 were positive for B. intermedia, seven were positive for B. pilosicoli, and eight were positive for two species. The FISH technique was able to identify significantly more positive birds compared with bacterial isolation followed by qPCR. Thus, it is concluded that the FISH technique was effective for identifying the three Brachyspira species evaluated and can thus be used as a rapid and effective diagnostic tool. RESUMO: Bactérias do gênero Brachyspira podem ocasionar enfermidades entéricas em aves, assim o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a eficácia da técnica de hibridização fluorescente in situ (FISH) para a identificação de Brachyspira pilosicoli, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae e Brachyspira intermedia utilizando amostras de ceco de aves de postura e matrizes comerciais fixados em formol. Foram coletadas amostras de 112 aves entre granjas de postura comercial e granjas de matrizes de corte com idade entre 35 e 82 semanas. Para avaliação, primeiramente procedeu-se ao isolamento bacteriano a partir das fezes. As amostras positivas foram submetidas a qPCR para identificação de espécies patogênicas. Posteriormente, segmentos formolizados de ceco dessas mesmas aves, foram processados pela técnica de FISH utilizando sondas marcadas de Brachyspira pilosicoli, Brachyspira hyodysenteriae e Brachyspira intermedia. Das 112 amostras foram obtidos 40 isolamentos característicos de Brachyspira e destes, na qPCR, 14 identificadas como B. hyodysenteriae e sete como B. intermedia, duas amostras foram positivas para ambas e 21 não foram caracterizadas. Na técnica de FISH, 52 amostras foram positivas para Brachyspira sp., 22 para B. hyodysenteriae, 28 para B. intermedia, sete para B. pilosicoli e oito amostras foram positivas para duas espécies. A avaliação estatística revelou que a técnica de FISH foi capaz de indicar maior número de aves positivas quando comparada ao isolamento bacteriano seguido por qPCR, inclusive revelando aves positivas para B. pilosicoli que não tinham sido identificados anteriormente. Dessa forma, conclui-se que a técnica de FISH apresentou-se eficiente para identificação das Brachyspiras avaliadas, servindo assim como uma ferramenta rápida e eficiente para o diagnóstico. Abstract Cancer is a complex and multifactorial disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and is one of the main causes of death in the world. This work aimed to evaluate a small series of 10 different indole-thiosemicarbazone compounds as potential antitumor agents. This is a pioneering study. For this, the antioxidant and cytotoxic capacity against normal and tumor cells was evaluated. The results showed that the compounds were able to promote moderate to low antioxidant activity for the ABTS radical scavenging assay. ADMET in silico assays showed that the compounds exhibited good oral bioavailability. As for toxicity, they were able to promote low cytotoxicity against normal cells, in addition to not being hemolytic. The compounds showed promising in vitro antitumor activity against the T47D, MCF-7, Jurkat and DU-145 strains, not being able to inhibit the growth of the Hepg2 strain.
