Resumo A cultura sanguínea de rotina é usada para a detecção de infecções na corrente sanguínea por bactérias aeróbias e anaeróbias e por leveduras patogênicas comuns. Estudo retrospectivo realizado em hospital público de Maceió-AL, por meio da coleta de dados de todos os prontuários com culturas sanguíneas positivas. Das 2.107 culturas sanguíneas realizadas, 17% foram positivas com Staphylococcus coagulase negativo (51,14%), seguido por Staphylococcus aureus (11,21%) e Klebsiella pneumoniae (6,32%). As bactérias Gram-positiva predominaram entre as culturas de sangue positivas, destacando-se o grupo das Staphylococcus coagulase-negativo. Enquanto as bactérias Gram-negativas apresentaram um número maior de espécies entre as culturas de sangue positivas.

Abstract Routine blood culture is used for the detection of bloodstream infections by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and by common pathogenic yeasts. A retrospective study was conducted in a public hospital in Maceió-AL, by collecting data of all medical records with positive blood cultures. Out of the 2,107 blood cultures performed, 17% were positive with Staphylococcus coagulase negative (51.14%), followed by Staphylococcus aureus (11.21%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (6.32%). Gram-positive bacteria predominated among positive blood cultures, highlighting the group of Staphylococcus coagulase-negative. While Gram-negative bacteria had a higher number of species among positive blood cultures.

ABSTRACT Organic residue in the substrate and the availability of light influence the production of high-quality seedlings for ex situ cultivation of native forest species. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of doses of chicken manure incorporated in the soil and shading levels on the morphophysiological responses and quality of Alibertia edulis (Rich.) A. Rich seedlings. Five doses of chicken manure (CM) were tested, 0.00, 2.08, 4.16, 6.24, and 8.32 g CM kg-1 soil, under two shade conditions, 0% (full sun) and 50% shading. At 215 days after transplanting, the maximum height obtained for A. edulis was 47.35 cm with 5.64 g CM kg-1 soil under 50% shade. Shaded seedlings had a higher number of leaves. The maximum leaf and root areas were 796.64 and 118.83 cm2 with 5.32 and 4.21 g CM kg-1 soil, respectively, both under 50% shade. Seedlings in 0% shade had lower physiological indices. Shading levels did not affect stomatal limitation, but CM contributed to physiological efficiency. Shoot biomass was higher under 50% shade with higher CM doses. The highest quality indexes occurred with 3.98 and 6.28 g kg-1 CM under 0 and 50% shade, respectively. A. edulis seedlings responded positively to the addition of CM to the soil and presented plasticity under contrasting light conditions. A. edulis seedlings produced under 50% shading with the addition of 6.24 g CM kg-1 soil presented high morphophysiological and seedling quality indicators. The addition of 4.32 g CM kg-1 soil contributed to high seedling quality under full sun conditions.

RESUMO O uso de resíduo orgânico no substrato e a disponibilidade de luz influenciam na obtenção de mudas de elevada qualidade para o cultivo ex situ de espécies florestais nativas. Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito de doses de cama de frango incorporadas ao solo e níveis de sombreamento sobre as respostas morfofisiológicas e qualidade de mudas de Alibertia edulis (Rich.) A. Rich. Foram estudadas cinco doses de cama de frango (CF): 0,00; 2,08; 4,16; 6,24 e 8,32 g kg-1 sob duas condições de sombreamento: 0% (pleno sol) e 50% de sombreamento. Aos 215 dias após o transplantio, a máxima altura da A. edulis foi 47,35 cm com 5,64 g CF kg-1 solo sob 50% de sombreamento. Mudas sombreadas tiveram maior número de folhas. A máxima área foliar e radicular foi de 796,64 e 118,83 cm2 com 5,32 g e 4,21 g CF kg-1 solo, respectivamente, ambos sob 50% de sombra. Mudas sob 0% de sombra tiveram menores índices fisiológicos. Os níveis de sombreamento não afetaram a limitação estomática, mas a CF contribuiu na eficiência fisiológica. As biomassas da parte aérea foram maiores sob 50% de sombra com maiores doses de CF. Os maiores índices de qualidade ocorreram com 3,98 e 6,28 g CF kg-1 solo sob 0 e 50% de sombra, respectivamente. Mudas de A. edulis responderam positivamente à adição de CF ao solo e apresentaram plasticidade às condições contrastantes de luz. Mudas de A. edulis produzidas em 50% de sombra com adição de 6,24 g CF kg-1 solo apresentaram maiores indicadores morfofisiológicos e qualidade de mudas. A adição de 4,32 g CF kg-1 solo contribuiu na qualidade de mudas sob pleno sol.

ABSTRACT Flooding is a stressful condition that causes damage to the photosynthetic apparatus, negatively affecting the growth of seedlings of fruit species, including Hymenaea courbaril L. Studies on physiological management, such as exogenous application of phytohormones, to alleviate abiotic stress have increased. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) on H. courbaril seedlings subjected to flooding. The seedlings received foliar application of four concentrations of SA (0, 100, 200, and 400 mg L-1) and were subjected to two water regimes: a) control - non-flooded and irrigated daily and b) flooded - seedlings were placed in a plastic pool, keeping the water depth at ± 5.0 cm above the substrate level. After 35 days, we evaluated the gas exchange, initial growth, quality, and potential ecological resilience of the seedlings. All flooded seedlings survived, but had reduced photosynthesis, carboxylation of Rubisco efficiency, and water-use and stomatal conductance when they received 100-300 mg L-1 SA. The seedlings that received between 100 and 300 mg L-1 SA had greater growth, quality, and phenotypic plasticity. Foliar application of SA did not mitigated the effect of flooding on gas exchange but contributed to the growth of H. courbaril seedlings.

RESUMO O alagamento é um fator estressante e promove danos ao aparato fotossintético, afetando negativamente o crescimento de mudas de espécies frutíferas, dentre elas a jatobazeiro Estudos sobre o manejo fisiológico, tal como aplicação exógena de fitohormônio, para aliviar o estresse abiótico tem aumentado. Assim, objetivou-se com esse estudo avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de concentrações de ácido salicílico (AS) em mudas de H. courbaril submetidas ao alagamento. As mudas receberam aplicação via foliar de quatro concentrações de AS: 0, 100, 200 e 400 mg L-1, e submetidas a dois regimes hídricos: a) controle: - não alagadas e irrigadas diariamente e b) alagamento - acondicionamento das mudas em piscina com lâmina d’água (5.0 cm) acima do nível do substrato. Decorridos 35 dias avaliamos as trocas gasosas, crescimento inicial, qualidade e o potencial de resiliência ecológica das mudas. Observou-se que todas as mudas alagadas sobreviveram, mas tiveram redução da fotossíntese, eficiência instantânea de carboxilação da Rubisco e de uso da água e condutância estomática e quando receberam aplicação entre 100-300 mg L-1 de AS. As mudas que receberam aplicação das concentrações entre 100 e 300 mg L-1 de AS tiveram maiores características de crescimento, qualidade e plasticidade fenotípica. A aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico não mitigou o efeito do alagamento sobre as trocas gasosas, mas contribuiu no crescimento das mudas de H. courbaril.

Resumo Dipteryx alata Vogel é uma arbórea de ampla ocorrência no Cerrado, se estabelecendo preferencialmente em solos bem drenados. Estudos referentes à ecofisiologia de D. alata em podem contribuir para a tomada de decisão sobre o uso de mudas dessa espécie em programas de recuperação de áreas degradadas sujeitas a alagamento temporário. Objetivamos com essa pesquisa avaliar os efeitos do alagamento no metabolismo fotossintético e antioxidante, além da qualidade de mudas dessa espécie, cultivadas ou não sob alagamento durante quatro períodos de avaliação (0, 20, 40 e 60 dias) seguidos de 100 dias após o término de cada período (0+100, 20+100, 40+100, 60+100 dias), possibilitando verificar o potencial de recuperação pós-alagamento. Observamos que as plantas alagadas apresentaram menor eficiência fotossintética e danos em FV/FM entretanto houve recuperação dessas características no pós alagamento. A qualidade das mudas reduziu sob alagamento não variando entre os períodos de exposição e embora tenha aumentado no pós-alagamento manteve-se menor não se recuperando. A ocorrência de lenticelas hipertrofiadas associadas a alterações fisiológicas e um eficiente sistema enzimático antioxidante devem ter contribuído para a sobrevivência e recuperação metabólica dessas mudas. Diante disso, sugerimos que a espécie é sensível ao estresse por alagamento, mas capaz de se ajustar e recuperar as características metabólicas 100 dias após a suspensão deste estresse hídrico, no entanto a qualidade da mudas não apresentou recuperação, assim, sugerimos plasticidade diante da condição de cultivo e ressaltamos que o tempo de 100 dias não é suficiente para a completa retomada do crescimento.

Abstract Dipteryx alata Vogel is a tree species widely found in Cerrado, settling preferentially in well drained soils. Studies related to ecophysiology of D. alata may contribute to the decision making about using seedlings of this species in projects aimed at the recovery of degraded areas where seasonal flooding happens. This study aimed to assess the effects of flooding on photosynthetic and antioxidant metabolism and quality of D. alata seedlings cultivated or not under flooding during four assessment periods (0, 20, 40, and 60 days), followed by 100 days after the end of each assessment period (0+100, 20+100, 40+100, and 60+100 days), allowing verifying the potential for post-flooding recovery. Flooded plants showed lower photosynthetic efficiency than non-flooded plants, regardless of the periods of exposure. However, this efficiency was recovered in the post-flooding, with values similar to that of the non-flooded seedlings. Moreover, the damage to FV/FM was evidenced by an increase in the period of exposure to flooding, but recovery was also observed at this stage of the photosynthetic metabolism. Seedling quality decreased under flooding, not varying between periods of exposure, but remained lower although the increase observed in the post-flooding period, with no recovery after flooding. The occurrence of hypertrophied lenticels associated with physiological changes and an efficient antioxidant enzyme system might have contributed to the survival and recovery of these seedlings. Thus, this species is sensitive to flooding stress but capable of adjusting and recovering metabolic characteristics at 100 days after the suspension of the water stress, but with no recovery in seedling quality. Thus, we suggested plasticity under the cultivation condition and determined that the time of 100 days is not enough for the complete resumption of growth.

Abstract Information from Pereskia aculeata Miller (Cactaceae) responses regarding the portion of the stem cuttings branch parental plants and the shading level need to be investigated in order to establish techniques for their producing seedlings. We aimed was to evaluate the effect of cutting types and shading levels in the production of P. aculeata seedlings. We studied three cutting types, collected from different portions of the stem cuttings branch: herbaceous, semi-hardwood, and hardwood, which were arranged under two shading levels: 0% (full sun) or 50% (shade). The selected parent plants had an adequate and vigorous phytosanitary aspect. After 90 days after the cuttings, the seedlings were evaluated regarding survival, growth indicators, biomass production and partitioning, and allometric indices. Seedlings from hardwood cuttings and produced under 0% shading showed higher survival. The largest number of sprouts occurred in seedlings of semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings. The highest leaf area values occurred in seedlings of semi-hardwood and hardwood cuttings under 0% shading. Seedlings from hardwood cuttings had higher biomass allocation in the roots under 50% shading. Seedlings of herbaceous and semi-hardwood portion allocated values ≥ 70% of the biomass in the aerial part. Seedlings of species are able to adjust to different shading levels as a plasticity mechanism. For the production of P. aculeata seedlings, the hardwood portion of the stem cuttings branch under full sun cultivation is recommended. In addition, semi-hardwood cuttings grown under 50% shading can also be used for seedlings production.

Resumo Informações das respostas da Pereskia aculeata Miller. (Cactaceae) quanto à porção da estaca do ramo da planta matriz e o nível de sombreamento precisam ser investigadas com o intuito de estabelecer protocolos para sua produção de mudas. Objetivamos avaliar o efeito do tipo de estaca e níveis de sombreamento na produção de mudas de P. aculeata. Estudamos três tipos de estacas baseados na porção de coleta do ramo: herbácea, semi-lenhosa e lenhosa, acondicionadas sob dois níveis de sombreamento: 0% (pleno sol) ou 50% (sombra). As plantas matrizes selecionadas tiveram aspecto fitossanitário adequado e eram vigorosas. Após 90 dias da estaquia, as mudas foram avaliadas quanto a sobrevivência, indicadores de crescimento, produção e particionamento de biomassa e índices alométricos. Mudas provenientes de estacas lenhosas e produzidas sob 0% de sombreamento tiveram maior sobrevivência. Os maiores números de brotos ocorreram nas mudas de estacas da porção semi-lenhosas e lenhosa. As maiores áreas foliares e radiculares ocorreram nas mudas de estacas semi-lenhosas e lenhosas sob 0% de sombreamento. Mudas provenientes de estacas da porção lenhosa tiveram maior alocação de biomassa nas raízes sob 50% de sombreamento. Mudas de estacas da porção herbáceas e semilenhosas alocaram valores ≥ 70% de biomassa da parte aérea. As mudas da espécie são capazes de se ajustar aos diferentes níveis de sombreamento como mecanismo de plasticidade. Para a produção de mudas de P. aculeata¸ recomenda-se utilizar a porção lenhosa do ramo do caule sob pleno sol. Além disso, estacas semi-lenhosas crescidas sob 50% de sombreamento podem ser utilizadas para a produção de mudas.

Abstract Flooding can damage the photosynthetic apparatus and initial growth of Schinus terebinthifolia. We aimed this study evaluates the potential of silicon (Si) and salicylic acid (SA) as mitigating agents on the ecophysiological responses and initial growth of S. terebinthifolia subjected to flooding periods. Seedlings were grown under the following conditions: 1) control (non-flooded): daily irrigation, 2) Flooded (F): storage of seedlings in a 500 L plastic pool, keeping the water depth at ± 2.0 cm above the substrate level, 3) F + 1.0 mM Si, 4) F + 2.0 mM Si, 5) F + 1.5 mM SA, and 6) F + 3.0 mM SA, and evaluated to 15 and 30 days. We observed that flooded seedlings formed hypertrophied lenticels on the stem on the 7th day as a stress adjustment strategy. S. terebinthifolia is sensitive to flooding, although it maintains a stable gas exchange for up to 15 days in this condition. The applications of 1.0 mM Si mitigated the pronounced decrease of gas exchange by 30 days. Using 1.0 mM Si and 3.0 mM SA contributed for integrity of the photosynthetic apparatus and to photochemical activities in the reaction centers, in addition favors to higher seedling biomass and quality under flooding. Foliar application of Si and SA is promising practice for photosynthetic metabolic and initial growth of S. terebinthifolia seedlings under flooded stress.

Resumo O alagamento pode promover danos ao aparato fotossintético e crescimento inicial de Schinus terebinthifolia. Objetivamos nesse estudo avaliar o potencial do silício (Si) e ácido salicílico (AS) como agentes de mitigação sobre as respostas ecofisiológicas e crescimento inicial de S. terebinthifolia submetidas a períodos de alagamento. As mudas foram cultivadas sob as seguintes condições: 1) controle (não alagado): irrigação diariamente, 2) Alagado (A): acondicionamento das mudas em piscina plástica de 500 L, mantendo uma lâmina d’água ± 2,0 cm acima do nível do substrato, 3) A + 1,0 mM Si, 4) A + 2,0 mM Si, 5) A + 1,5 mM AS e 6) A + 3,0 mM AS. Observamos que as mudas alagadas formaram lenticelas hipertrofiadas no caule a partir dos 7 dias como estratégia de ajuste ao estresse. S. terebinthifolia é sensível ao alagamento, embora mantenha estável as trocas gasosas por 15 dias nessa condição. A aplicação de 1.0 mM de Si mitigou o decréscimo pronunciado das trocas gasosas por 30 dias. O uso de 1,0 mM Si e 3,0 mM SA contribuíram para a integridade do aparato fotossintético e atividades fotoquímicas nos centros de reação, além de favorecer maior produção de biomassa e qualidade das mudas sob alagamento. A aplicação foliar de Si e AS é uma prática promissora para o metabolismo fotossintético e crescimento inicial de mudas de S. terebinthifolia sob estresse por alagamento.

Abstract This study aimed to analyze the phytochemical profile of essential oil obtained from the leaves of Coriandrum sativum L., and its antifungal activity against Candida spp. The research consisted of an in vitro study including collecting the vegetable product, analysis of its macronutrients, extraction, and chemical analysis of the essential oil, and assaying antifungal activity through minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC), with growth inhibition kinetics, and the product’s effects on multi-species Candida biofilm. Nitrogen (47.08 g Kg-1), phosphorus (5.3 g Kg-1) and potassium (50.46 g Kg-1) levels were within the normal range. The major constituents were octanal, decanal, dec-(2E)-enal, and dodecanal. The MIC and MFC of the product evaluated against 11 tested Candida strains ranged from 31.25 to 250 μg/mL. There was inhibition of fungal growth during 24 hours of exposure at the 3 concentrations tested (250, 125, and 62.5 μg/mL). The concentration of 80 mg/mL promoted the greatest reduction in multispecies biofilm (70% reduction in biofilm). Coriandrum sativum L. essential oil extract is principally constituted of alcohols and aldehydes and presents fungicidal activity against Candida spp. in its in planktonic and biofilm forms.

Resumo Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar o perfil fitoquímico do óleo essencial obtido das folhas de Coriandrum sativum L., e sua atividade antifúngica contra Candida spp. A pesquisa consistiu em um estudo in vitro incluindo a coleta do produto vegetal, análise de seus macronutrientes, extração e análise química do óleo essencial e ensaio da atividade antifúngica por meio da concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) e concentração fungicida mínima (MFC), com crescimento cinética de inibição e os efeitos do produto no biofilme de Candida multi-espécies. Os níveis de nitrogênio (47,08 g Kg-1), fósforo (5,3 g Kg-1) e potássio (50,46 g Kg-1) estavam dentro da normalidade. Os principais constituintes foram octanal, decanal, dec-(2E)-enal e dodecanal. A CIM e CFM do produto avaliado contra 11 cepas de Candida testadas variaram de 31,25 a 250 μg/mL. Houve inibição do crescimento fúngico durante 24 horas de exposição nas 3 concentrações testadas (250, 125 e 62,5 μg/mL). A concentração de 80 mg/mL promoveu a maior redução no biofilme multiespécies (redução de 70% no biofilme). O extrato do óleo essencial de Coriandrum sativum L. é constituído principalmente por álcoois e aldeídos e apresenta atividade fungicida contra Candida spp. em suas formas planctônicas e biofilme.

Abstract ×Butyagrus nabonnandii (Prosch.) Vorster is known as mule palm due to sterility, but recently, its pollen has been successfully used in backcrosses. It was first described as an artificial cross between Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman and Butia odorata (Barb.Rodr.) Noblick in 1890. It has been considered rare in nature, and its morphology has been little studied. Thus, we aimed to verify if ×B. nabonnandii is sterile by studying its morphology and seed germination from different natural populations. The hybrid was sampled in four municipalities and is new to three of these. In one of the visited cities, 20 specimens were counted. The vegetative morphology showed less variation than the reproductive. However, part of the vegetative characters differed from previous descriptions relying solely on cultivated specimens. Contrary to previous reports, our data indicate that ×Butyagrus nabonnandii is neither rare nor infertile. Seed germination rates of ×B. nabonnandii are low due to seed predation by beetle larvae and seedless fruit production, which is also observed in the genera of the parental species. Furthermore, as in its parents, the morphology of the hybrid is complex, and future anatomical and molecular approaches are important for a better delimitation and understanding of the biology of ×B. nabonnandii.

Resumo ×Butyagrus nabonnandii (Prosch.) Vorster é conhecida como palmeira-mula por ser considerada estéril, apesar de ter sido utilizada com sucesso em retrocruzamentos. O híbrido resulta do cruzamento entre Syagrus romanzoffiana (Cham.) Glassman e Butia odorata (Barb.Rodr.) Noblick, é tido como raro e possui morfologia pouco estudada. Objetivou-se estudar a morfologia de ×B. nabonnandii e verificar sua esterilidade através da germinação de suas sementes a partir de diferentes populações naturais. O híbrido foi registrado em quatro municípios sendo, em três desses, de ocorrência inédita. Em um dos municípios visitados, foram contabilizados 20 espécimes. A morfologia vegetativa apresentou menor variação do que a reprodutiva. Entretanto, parte dos caracteres morfológicos vegetativos diferem do descrito na literatura para espécimes cultivados. Nossos dados indicam que além de não ser raro, o híbrido é fértil. As taxas de germinação das sementes de ×B. nabonnandii são baixas devido à predação das sementes por larvas de besouros, além da produção de frutos sem sementes, o que também ocorre nos gêneros das espécies progenitoras. Além disso, assim como em seus parentais, a morfologia do híbrido é complexa, sendo importantes futuros estudos anatômicos e moleculares para uma melhor delimitação e compreensão da biologia de ×B. nabonnandii.

Abstract Light and water availability can impact plant survival and growth, making ecophysiological studies crucial for understanding their tolerance and to single and combined stresses. The aimed of this study was to investigate the physiological and growth responses of Inga vera Willd. plants induced by different water regimes and light intensities. Three water regimes were implemented based on substrate water retention capacity (WRC) - 50%, 75%, and 100%, along with shading levels (SH) - 0% (full sun), 30%, and 70%. Evaluations were conducted at 25 and 50 days after applying the water regimes, and during a recovery period of 30 days when all treatments were maintained at 75% of WRC. Photochemical efficiency, gas exchange, chlorophylls indices, growth, quality of the seedlings and content proline amino acid were assessed. Overall, I. vera plants showed greater sensitivity to increased exposure to light than to low water availability. The interaction of SH + WRC was beneficial for the gas exchange and chlorophylls indices characteristics under SH 70% + WRC 75-100% at 25 and 50 days, with higher results, greater plant growth and higher proline contents for leaves and roots under SH 30% and 70% + WRC 50%, 75% and 100% at 25 and 50 days. There was no recovery effect for seedlings grown in full sun. The plants grown under shade during the recovery period maintained their values for most of the characteristics evaluated. SH 30% + WRC 75% contributed to an increase in photosynthetic metabolism and, as a result, to the quality of the seedlings.

Resumo A disponibilidade de luz e água pode afetar a sobrevivência e o crescimento das plantas, tornando os estudos ecofisiológicos cruciais para a compreensão de sua tolerância a estresses individuais e combinados. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar as respostas fisiológicas e de crescimento das plantas de Inga vera Willd. induzidas por diferentes regimes hídricos e de intensidades de luz. Foram implementados três regimes hídricos com base nos níveis de capacidade de retenção de água do substrato (CRA) - 50%, 75% e 100%, juntamente com níveis de sombreamento (SH) - 0% (pleno sol), 30% e 70%. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 25 e 50 dias após a aplicação dos regimes hídricos e durante um período de recuperação (REC) de 30 dias, quando todos os tratamentos foram mantidos em 75% da CRA. Foram avaliados a eficiência fotoquímica, as trocas gasosas, os índices de clorofila, o crescimento, a qualidade das mudas e o conteúdo do aminoácido prolina. De modo geral, as plantas de I. vera mostraram maior sensibilidade à exposição aumentada à luz do que à baixa disponibilidade de água. A interação de SH + WRC foi benéfica para as características de trocas gasosas e índices de clorofila sob SH 70% + WRC 75-100% aos 25 e 50 dias, com resultados mais altos, maior crescimento da planta e maiores teores de prolina para folhas e raízes sob SH 30% e 70% + WRC 50%, 75% e 100% aos 25 e 50 dias. Não houve efeito de recuperação para as mudas cultivadas a pleno sol. As plantas cultivadas sob sombra durante o período de recuperação mantiveram seus valores para a maioria das características avaliadas. O SH 30% + WRC 75% contribuiu para o aumento do metabolismo fotossintético, como resultado, melhor qualidade das mudas.

RESUMO O déficit hídrico afeta negativamente a síntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos, os processos fotoquímicos da fotossíntese e a qualidade das mudas. Supõe-se que a aplicação exógena foliar de ácido salicílico (AS) pode contribuir na regulação fotoquímica e aumenta a tolerância ao estresse. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito do AS em aliviar o efeito estressante do déficit hídrico sobre as atividades fotoquímicas da fotossíntese e qualidade das mudas de Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi. As mudas foram submetidas a quatro regimes hídricos: 0, 4, 8 e 12 dias de restrição hídrica (DRH), associadas a quatro concentrações de AS: 0, 50, 100 e 200 mg L-1 (via pulverização foliar; 10 mL por planta) durante 48 dias. O crescimento de S. terebinthifolia é afetado negativamente por maiores dias de restrição hídrica e sem tratamento de AS. Entretanto, a aplicação de 200 mg L-1 de SA incrementou os pigmentos fotossintéticos, além da eficiência quântica fotoquímica no fotossistema II e de conversão de energia absorvida nas mudas sob 12 DRH. A qualidade das mudas foi maior aos 7 e 12 DRH com aplicação de 100 e 200 mg L-1 de SA, respectivamente. A aplicação exógena de AS contribuiu positivamente nas concentrações de pigmentos, estabilidade fotoquímica da fotossíntese e qualidade das mudas de S. terebinthifolia submetidas à maiores períodos de restrição hídrica.

ABSTRACT Water deficit adversely affects photosynthetic pigment synthesis, photochemical processes, and seedling quality. Exogenous foliar application of salicylic acid (SA) is hypothesized to contribute to photochemical regulation and increase stress tolerance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of SA in alleviating the effects of water deficit stress on the photosynthetic photochemical activities and quality of Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi. seedlings. The seedlings were subjected to four regimes of water deficit: 0, 4, 8, and 12 days of water restriction (DWR), associated with the application of four concentrations of SA: 0, 50, 100, and 200 mg L-1 (via foliar spray; 10 mL per plant) during 48 days. Growth of S. terebinthifolia seedlings was adversely affected by longer duration of water restriction in absence of SA treatment. However, application of 200 mg L-1 of SA increased photosynthetic pigment levels, photochemical quantum efficiency in photosystem II, and absorbed energy conversion efficiency in seedlings under 12 DWR. The seedling quality was better at 7 and 12 DWR when associated with application of 100 and 200 mg L-1 SA, respectively. The exogenous application of SA contributed positively to pigment concentration and photochemical stability of photosynthesis, and it improved the quality of S. terebinthifolia seedlings subjected to long water restriction periods.

Resumo O déficit hídrico vem ocasionando sérios problemas no crescimento e desenvolvimento das plantas, fazendo com que ocorram danos no seu metabolismo. Assim, faz necessário o uso de agentes que possam mitigar os danos ocasionados nas plantas. Objetivamos neste estudo verificar o potencial do silício de mitigar os efeitos estressantes do déficit hídrico em mudas de Dipteryx alata Vogel, e auxiliar na recuperação após a retomada da irrigação. Foram estudados quatro regimes hídricos: (I) Irrigação contínua; (II): Déficit hídrico + Si 0; (III): Déficit hídrico + 0.75 mL de Si e (IV): Déficit hídrico + 1.50 mL de Si. As mudas foram avaliadas em quatro períodos: (1) (T0 – tempo zero) início do experimento, período antes de iniciar a suspensão da irrigação, (2) (F0) quando os valores da taxa fotossintética nas mudas sob suspensão da irrigação chegaram próximos à zero, quando ocorreu a retomada da irrigação; (3) (REC) quando os valores de A alcançaram valores próximos ao das mudas sob irrigação contínua, caracterizando o período de recuperação e (4) (FINAL) 45 dias após a REC quando as mudas foram mantidas sob irrigação contínua, semelhante ao controle. A aplicação de 0.75 mL de Si alivia os danos ao aparato fotossintético das mudas de D. alata por maior período sob déficit hídrico, e contribui na recuperação fisiológica de maneira mais rápida após a retomada da irrigação. As mudas de D. alata apresentam potencial de recuperação após o período de estresse, independente da aplicação de Si.

Abstract Water deficit to causes serious problems in the growth and development of plants, impairing their metabolism. Thus, it is necessary to use agents that can mitigate plant damage. This study assesses the potential of silicon to mitigate water deficit stress in Dipteryx alata Vogel seedlings and to help in their recovery after the resumption of irrigation. The study analyzed four water regimes: (I) Continuous irrigation; (II) Water deficit without Si; (III) Water deficit + 0.75 mL Si; and (IV) Water deficit + 1.50 mL Si. Seedlings were evaluated in four periods: (1) (T0 – time zero) at the beginning of the experiment, before irrigation suspension; (2) (P0) when the photosynthetic rates (A) of seedlings under irrigation suspension reached values close to zero, period in which irrigation was resumed; (3) (REC) when A reached values close to those of seedlings under continuous irrigation, characterizing the recovery period; and (4) (END) 45 days after REC, when seedlings were kept under continuous irrigation, similar to the control. Application of 0.75 mL Si alleviates damage to the photosynthetic apparatus of D. alata seedlings that remain longer under water deficit, and contributes to faster physiological recovery after the resumption of irrigation. D. alata seedlings have recovery potential after the stress period, regardless of Si application.

Reinforced concrete beam (RCB) elements show low mechanical performance when interfacial bonding strength (IBS) is not well controlled. New tailorable material-structure arrangements - Metamaterials - offer solutions to the IBS problem. This paper analyzes the mechanical characteristics of IBS on RCBs for reinforced cement mortar containing Metamaterial bars (MMB) that were machined from SAE 1020 Carbon steel. Each MMB has a stepped geometrical shape, with a cylindrical bar divided into equal-length segments, along with a ’rise height’ (p) change. Four geometries were defined, i.e., R0− Smooth bar, R1− p = 0.1mm, R2− p =0.3mm and R3− p=0.5mm. Three-point flexural strength tests were performed on the RCBs to determine the maximum bond strength (ML) between the MMB and cement mortar. Images of interfacial regions were obtained using SEM and 3D Roughness Reconstruction software to calculate the average roughness (Ra) and the roughness height (Rz). The reinforcement MMB geometry had a significant impact on the ML results, particularly on the first crack strength and the failure mode. The R3 geometry ML values were higher than the other tested geometries (44.5%). The results of the scale models are encouraging and offer a novel and prospective direction for further experimental and even numerical Metamaterial research to improve interfacial bond strength.

Resumo O silício (Si) é um elemento benéfico que pode mitigar os efeitos do estresse hídrico sobre o metabolismo fotossintético e crescimento das plantas. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar o potencial do Si na mitigação do efeito estressante do déficit hídrico e alagamento em mudas de Eugenia myrcianthes Nied. As mudas receberam aplicação de três doses de silício: 0, 2 e 4 mmol e foram submetidas a dois regimes hídricos: (I) - irrigação contínua e (E) flutuação hídrica, caracterizada como estresse hídrico obtido por dois ciclos de regimes hídricos: suspensão da irrigação e alagamento. Cada ciclo foi encerrado quando as mudas apresentaram taxa fotossintética próxima de zero (F0), momento que a condição de irrigação estressante foi normalizada até que a taxa fotossintética alcançasse os valores das mudas controle (REC). As avaliações foram realizadas em cinco períodos: T0 – condição inicial das mudas; 1ª e 2ª F0; 1ª e 2ª REC. As mudas de E. myrcianthes atingiram F0 aos 22 e 50 dias sob déficit hídrico e alagamento, respectivamente. O estresse hídrico promoveu danos nas atividades fotoquímicas no fotossistema II. E. myrcianthes é uma espécie sensível ao estresse hídrico, mas capaz de se ajustar à flutuação hídrica e a aplicação de 2 mmol de Si contribuiu na regulação das trocas gasosas, rendimentos fotoquímicos e crescimento dessa espécie na fase de déficit e alagamento. Ressaltamos que mudas de E. myrcianthes apresentam potencial de resiliência por plasticidade fisiológica independente da aplicação de silício.

Abstract Silicon (Si) is a beneficial element that can mitigate effects of water stress on photosynthetic metabolism and plant growth. Thus, the aimed was to evaluate the effect of Si in mitigating the stressful effect of water deficit and flooding in Eugenia myrcianthes Nied. seedlings. The seedlings received three silicon doses (0, 2, and 4 mmol) and were subjected to two water regimes (I – continuous irrigation and S – water fluctuation, characterized as water stress obtained by two cycles of water regimes: irrigation suspension and flooding). Each cycle was ended when the seedlings had a photosynthetic rate close to zero (P0) when the stressful irrigation condition was normalized until the photosynthetic rate reached the values of the control seedlings (REC). The evaluations were carried out in five periods: T0 – initial seedling condition; 1st and 2nd P0; and 1st and 2nd REC. The E. myrcianthes seedlings reached P0 at 22 and 50 days under water deficit and flooding, respectively. Water stress caused damage to photochemical activities in photosystem II. E. myrcianthes is a species sensitive to water stress, but capable of adjusting to water fluctuation, and the application of 2 mmol Si contributed to the regulation of gas exchange, photochemical yields, and growth of this species at the deficit and flooding phases. We emphasize that E. myrcianthes seedlings have potential for resilience due to physiological plasticity, regardless of the silicon application.

ABSTRACT Water availability is one of the most important factors for the growth of tree seedlings in forestry-related regions. We hypothesized that under different water regimes, a water-retaining polymer (hydrogel) can positively contribute to chlorophyll- a fluorescence and growth in Campomanesia xanthocarpa (Mart.) O. Berg. Four water retention capacities (WRC) were evaluated: 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, depending on the presence or absence of hydrogel at the substrate. The lowest WRCs, particularly those under 25% without hydrogel, reduced chlorophyll index and negatively affected the photochemical activities of photosystem II. However, under low water availability the hydrogel mitigated the damage inflicted on the reaction centers and chlorophyll synthesis. The greatest growth effects occurred at 100% WRC in the presence of the hydrogel. Physiological indices were higher under 100% WRC without hydrogel and 50% with hydrogel. The increase in biomass and Dickson quality were more pronounced in the seedlings produced under 50% WRC and hydrogel, and the addition of these parameters to the substrate contributed to more viable morphophysiological indicators for the production of C. xanthocarpa seedlings.

Malaria, a parasitic infection caused by Plasmodium falciparum, is a serious global public health problem. The enzyme enoyl-acyl carrier protein (ACP) reductase present in a limiting step in the biosynthesis of fatty acids type II was used to search for novel molecules with potential inhibitor by virtual screening techniques. A flavonoid library obtained in ChEMBL database (n = 4,008) was filtered through physico-chemical similarity using the Euclidean distance as a criterion. The selected molecules were subjected to molecular docking using the scoring function GridScore in the DOCK 6.5 software. The top 30 ranked molecules by molecular docking were submitted to the AuPosSOM 2.1 software with the aim of clustering molecules by means of intermolecular interactions in order to understand the patterns of these interactions with enoyl-ACP reductase from Plasmodium falciparum (PfENR). We observed the importance of flavonoid moiety to hydrophobic interactions with the active site of enzyme, this confirmed the choice to study this metabolite class as PfENR inhibitors. Moreover, it was possible to recognize which intermolecular interactions contribute to the molecular recognition process.
