Resumo Algumas espécies de Bartonella têm os felinos como principais hospedeiros reservatórios. Tais patógenos são transmitidos ao homem por intermédio da arranhadura ou mordedura de gatos e entre os gatos, por meio da pulga Ctenocephalides felis. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a ocorrência de DNA de Bartonella spp. em gatos de abrigos e seus ectoparasitas e a relação entre o estado de infecção dos gatos e dos ectoparasitas albergados por estes. Material genético bacteriano foi detectado em 47,8% das amostras de sangue de gatos, 18,3% das pulgas C. felis, 13,3% dos "pools" de ovos de pulgas e 12,5% dos "pools" de piolhos. DNA de B. henselae e B. clarridgeiae foi detectado em pulgas, e B. henselae, B. clarridgeiae e B. koehlerae, em amostras de sangue de gatos. Gatos infestados por ectoparasitas que carreavam DNA de Bartonella spp. demonstraram aproximadamente o dobro de chance de estarem infectados. Esses resultados indicam que os gatos de abrigos têm alta prevalência de infecção por espécies de Bartonella, capazes de causar doenças no homem. E também destacam a importância do controle e prevenção da infestação por ectoparasitas, no intuito de prevenir a infecção em gatos e humanos.

Abstract Feline Bartonella can be transmitted to humans through cat scratches or bites, and between cats, by the flea Ctenocephalides felis. The study was carried out in order to investigate the occurrence of Bartonella DNA in cats living in shelters and their ectoparasites and the relationship between the infection status of cats and ectoparasites they host. Bartonella DNA was detected in 47.8% of the cat blood samples, 18.3% of C. felis fleas, 13.3% of flea egg pools and 12.5% of lice pools. B. henselae and B. clarridgeiae DNA were detected in cat fleas, while B. henselae, B. clarridgeiae and B. koehlerae were found in blood samples from bacteremic cats. Cats infested by positive ectoparasites showed approximately twice the odds of being infected. Our results indicate that shelter cats have high prevalence of Bartonella species that are known to be human pathogens. This highlights the importance of controlling infestations by ectoparasites to avoid cat and human infection.

Resumo: Introdução: A residência médica é uma especialização estabelecida como padrão-ouro para formar especialistas. Trata-se de uma fase profissional transformadora para o jovem médico, cuja finalidade é aprimorar a qualidade da formação médica. Ao atuar na formação do residente ao mesmo tempo que presta assistência aos usuários, o preceptor se torna uma espécie de interlocutor entre o ensino e a assistência. Cabe a esse profissional estimular os residentes a desenvolver senso clínico e ético, e há relatos de que, em geral, o preceptor não possui preparação para as funções docentes. Objetivo: Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as vivências e os entendimentos dos preceptores em relação à atividade de ensino nas residências médicas. Método: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e quantitativo, composto por 300 preceptores, de todas as faixas etárias e sexos, realizado em Maceió, em Alagoas. Foi aplicado um questionário elaborado e validado por Girotto, contendo 35 afirmações, divididas em cinco fatores, com ênfase nas opiniões dos preceptores sobre vários temas envolvendo suas atividades. Analisaram-se os percentuais de percepção positiva e de percepção negativa sobre cada afirmação. Resultado: Houve predomínio de percepção positiva sobre aptidão para atividades educacionais (88,67%), desenvolvimento de correlações teórico-práticas na preceptoria (96%), percepção de necessidade de aprendizagem (98,33%) e atualização (87%). Também houve percepção positiva sobre a presença de recursos essenciais para as atividades docentes (71%); além disso, 91% dos preceptores relataram que a preceptoria integra o residente na sua equipe. Porém, é interessante o fato de a preceptoria ser uma tarefa não remunerada (75,34%). Além disso, não há capacitações pedagógicas (72%). Conclusão: Os preceptores estão inseridos em um ambiente adequado para suas atividades docentes, com estrutura física apropriada, além de contarem com suporte da chefia e da instituição. Sentem-se aptos para ensinar, porém, em geral, não receberam capacitação docente. Os residentes estão adequadamente inseridos no ambiente da residência, o que resulta na melhora do serviço. Contudo, os preceptores, em geral, não são remunerados para essa tarefa.

Abstract: Introduction: Medical residency is a specialization established as the gold standard for the training of specialists. It is a transformative professional phase for the young physician, aimed at improving the quality of medical training. By fostering the resident’s training while providing assistance to the users, the preceptor becomes a type of interlocutor between teaching and assistance. This professional needs to encourage their residents to develop their clinical and ethical sense, and it is generally reported that the preceptors are not trained for their teaching duties. Objective: to analyze the preceptors’ experiences and understandings related to the teaching activity in medical residencies. Method: Descriptive and quantitative study, consisting of 300 preceptors, of all age groups and genders, from Maceió, Alagoas. A questionnaire created and validated by Girotto was applied, containing 35 statements, divided into five factors, with emphasis on the preceptors’ opinions on several topics involving their activities. The percentages of positive and negative perceptions about each statement were analyzed. Results: There was a predominance of positive perceptions about the aptitude for educational activities (88.67%), development of theoretical-practical correlations in preceptorship (96%), perception of the need for learning (98.33%) and updating (87%). There was also a positive perception related to the presence of essential resources for teaching activities (71%); additionally, 91% of the preceptors reported that preceptorship integrates the resident into their team. However, it is noteworthy the fact that preceptorship constitutes non-remunerated work (75.34%), as well as the non-performance of pedagogical training (72%). Conclusion: The preceptors are part of an adequate environment for their teaching activities, with appropriate physical structure, in addition to support from the management and the institution. They feel able to teach, but in general they have not received teaching training. The residents are adequately incorporated into the residency environment, improving the service. However, overall, the preceptors are not paid for this work.

RESUMO Objetivo Estimar a prevalência de sintomas de ansiedade e depressão e seus fatores relacionados, entre os profissionais de enfermagem de uma maternidade, durante a pandemia de COVID-19. Método Estudo observacional, descritivo e transversal, realizado com 189 profissionais de enfermagem de uma maternidade de referência, em Fortaleza-Ceará. A coleta de dados ocorreu durante três meses − de agosto a outubro de 2020 −, e utilizou-se Formulário Sociodemográfico e Clínico e Escala Hospitalar de Ansiedade e Depressão. Os fatores relacionados para depressão ou ansiedade foram determinados pela análise bivariada, por meio do teste qui-quadrado (nominais) e Wilcoxon (numéricas), com significância de p<0,05. Resultados Estimou-se a prevalência de sintomatologia ansiosa e depressiva em 58,3% e 29,6% dos participantes, respectivamente. Cerca de 53,5% foram afastados por suspeita de COVID-19 e 58%, infectados pelo vírus. Observou-se que os profissionais que atuavam na emergência, clínica obstétrica e Unidade de Terapia Intensiva materna foram os mais expostos ao risco de ter depressão (p=0,01055). Conclusão e implicações para a prática Alta prevalência de sintomas de ansiedade e depressão entre os participantes, independentemente de estarem na linha de frente da pandemia ou não. A situação requer acolhimento às demandas da saúde mental.

ABSTRACT Objective To estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms and their related factors among nursing professionals in a maternity hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic. Method Observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out with 189 nursing professionals from a reference maternity hospital in Fortaleza-Ceará. Data collection took place over three months, from August to October 2020, using the Sociodemographic and Clinical Form and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Factors related to depression or anxiety were determined by bivariate analysis using the chi-square (nominal) and Wilcoxon (numerical) tests, with a significance of p<0.05. Results The prevalence of anxious and depressive symptoms was estimated in 58.3% and 29.6% of the participants, respectively. About 53.5% were removed due to suspected COVID-19 and 58% were infected with the virus. It was observed that professionals who worked in the emergency, obstetric clinic and maternal Intensive Care Unit were the most exposed to the risk of having depression (p=0.01055). Conclusion and implications for practice High prevalence of anxiety and depression symptoms among participants, regardless of whether they are on the front lines of the pandemic or not. The situation requires meeting the demands of mental health.

Método Estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal realizado con 189 profesionales de enfermería de una maternidad de referencia en Fortaleza-Ceará. La recolección de datos ocurrió durante tres meses, de agosto a octubre de 2020, utilizando el Formulario Sociodemográfico y Clínico y la Escala Hospitalaria de Ansiedad y Depresión. Los factores relacionados con la depresión o la ansiedad se determinaron mediante análisis bivariado mediante las pruebas de chi-cuadrado (nominal) y Wilcoxon (numérica), con una significancia de p<0,05. Resultados La prevalencia de síntomas ansiosos y depresivos se estimó en 58,3% y 29,6% de los participantes, respectivamente. Alrededor del 53,5% fueron retirados por sospecha de COVID-19 y el 58% estaban infectados con el virus. Se observó que los profesionales que actuaban en emergencia, clínica obstétrica y Unidad de Terapia Intensiva materna eran los más expuestos al riesgo de tener depresión (p=0,01055). Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica Alta prevalencia de síntomas de ansiedad y depresión entre los participantes, independientemente de si están en la primera línea de la pandemia o no. La situación requiere atender las demandas de salud mental.

Resumo A relação do homem com o trabalho pode impactar diretamente em sua qualidade de vida e condição de saúde. O objetivo deste artigo é comparar as condições de Qualidade de Vida no Trabalho (QVT) de três diferentes áreas de atuação profissional. Estudo transversal com amostra aleatória de 172 trabalhadores de um hospital (37,9±10,3 anos; 73,8% mulheres). Os participantes responderam ao inventário de avaliação de qualidade de vida no trabalho (IA_QVT). A Anova e o teste de Tukey foram utilizados para análise dos dados. 36,4% dos itens que avaliaram condições de trabalho e 35,7% dos itens sobre reconhecimento e crescimento profissional apresentaram diferenças entre os grupos (p<0,05). Nos âmbitos de relações socioprofissionais, organização do trabalho e elo trabalho-vida social, os índices foram de 12,5%, 11,1% e 10,0%, respectivamente. No geral, 21,7% dos itens pesquisados apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os grupos. Foram encontradas diferenças importantes na percepção de QVT entre áreas distintas, sugerindo que um planejamento eficiente pode resultar em promoção da saúde caso atenda demandas setorizadas.

Abstract The relationship between people and work has a direct impact on quality of life and health. The objective of this article is to compare perceived levels of Quality of Working Life (QWL) across three different groups of professionals. Cross-sectional study with a random sample of 172 hospital workers (37.9±10.3 years; 73.8% women). Participants filled out the Quality of Working Life Assessment Inventory (QWL-AI). The data was analyzed using Anova and Tukey’s test. Statistically significant differences were found between the groups in 36.4% of the items assessing work conditions, 35.7% of the items assessing professional growth and recognition (p<0.05), 12.5% of the items assessing socioprofessional workplace relationships, 11.1% of the items assessing work organization, and 10% of the items assessing link between work and social life. Overall, 21.7% of the items showed significant differences between groups. We found significant differences in perceived QWL between the different groups, suggesting that QWL interventions should be tailored to the address the specific needs and demands of different sectors and departments to be effective.

RESUMO Introdução: Simulações são amplamente utilizadas na educação médica, mas há pouca evidência de sua eficácia no tratamento de pacientes neurocríticos. Como o acidente vascular cerebral agudo (AVC) é uma patologia que requer atendimento imediato, o uso de simulação pode ser uma ferramenta útil no treinamento do manejo desses pacientes. Objetivo: Avaliar o impacto do uso de simulação realística na autopercepção de segurança no atendimento a pacientes vítimas de AVC agudo. Métodos: Estudo antes-depois controlado. No grupo da intervenção, 17 profissionais da área de saúde participaram de um curso de simulação realística de atendimento a pacientes com AVC. Como controles, os participantes foram escolhidos a partir de uma amostra de conveniência composta por 18 participantes do curso Emergency Neurologic Life Support (ENLS) e 20 participantes de um curso de Neurossonologia. Foram respondidos questionários antes e após o curso para avaliar a autopercepção de segurança no atendimento a pacientes vítimas de AVC agudo, variando de 10 a 50 pontos. Foi avaliada a variação entre os resultados pré- e pós-teste, para avaliar a mudança na autopercepção de confiança do trainee no manejo do AVC agudo. Análise multivariada foi realizada para controlar possíveis fatores de confusão. Resultados: Quarenta e seis (83,63%) participantes responderam aos questionários. A pontuação no questionário pós-curso foi maior do que a obtida no questionário pré-curso no grupo de participantes do curso de simulação realística em AVC [mediana do questionário pré-curso: 41,5 (36,7-46,5) e mediana do questionário pós-curso: 47,0 (44,7-48,0); p=0,033]. Essa diferença não foi observada no curso de Neurossonologia [mediana pré-curso (IQR): 46,0 (44,0-47,00), mediana pós-curso (IQR): 46,0 (44,0-47,0); p=0,739] nem no ENLS [mediana pré-curso (IQR): 46,5 (39,0-48,2) mediana pós-curso (IQR): 47,0 (40,2-49,0); p=0,317]. Esses resultados persistiram após ajuste das variáveis. Conclusão: O curso de simulação realística em AVC foi associado a um aumento na autopercepção de segurança dos participantes em atender pacientes vítimas de AVC agudo.

ABSTRACT Background: Simulations are becoming widely used in medical education, but there is little evidence of their effectiveness on neurocritical care. Because acute stroke is a neurological emergency demanding prompt attention, it is a promising candidate for simulation training. Objective: To assess the impact of a stroke realistic simulation course on clinicians’ self-perception of confidence in the management of acute stroke. Methods: We conducted a controlled, before-after study. For our intervention, 17 healthcare professionals participated in a stroke realistic simulation course. As controls, participants were chosen from a convenience sample of attendees to the courses Emergency Neurologic Life Support (ENLS) (18 participants) and Neurosonology (20 participants). All participants responded pre- and post-test questionnaires evaluating their self-perception of confidence in acute stroke care, ranging from 10 to 50 points. We evaluated the variation between pre- and post-test results to assess the change on trainees’ self-perception of confidence in the management of acute stroke. Multivariate analysis was performed to control for potential confounders. Results: Forty-six (83.63%) subjects completed both questionnaires. The post-test scores were higher than those from the pretests in the stroke realistic simulation course group [pretest median (interquartile range - IQR): 41.5 (36.7-46.5) and post-test median (IQR): 47 (44.7-48); p=0.033], but not in the neurosonology [pretest median (IQR): 46 (44-47) and post-test median (IQR): 46 (44-47); p=0.739] or the ENLS [pretest median (IQR): 46.5 (39-48.2), post-test median (IQR): 47 (40.2-49); p=0.317] groups. Results were maintained after adjustment for covariates. Conclusions: This stroke realistic simulation course was associated with an improvement on trainees’ self-perception of confidence in providing acute stroke care.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar os desafios da atuação do enfermeiro na preservação de vestígios nos casos de violência sexual contra a mulher, evidenciados na literatura. Método Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa, realizada nas bases de dados SCOPUS, Cochrane, LILACS, MEDLINE, CINAHL e no Google Acadêmico, em janeiro de 2021. Utilizaram-se os descritores Sex offenses e Forensic Nursing, combinados com o operador booleano AND. Foram encontrados 207 artigos e selecionados 15. Resultados Os desafios identificados foram: carência de recursos humanos e de formação em enfermagem forense; formação de enfermeiros para coleta de vestígios; execução limitada de procedimentos para a preservação de vestígios; conflitos entre o papel do enfermeiro no cuidado e na coleta de vestígios; ausência de protocolos ou padronização dos já existentes; subnotificação dos casos de agressão; falta de tempo e medo da responsabilidade legal ou represália; ausência de instrumentos legais que regulamentem as atribuições do enfermeiro e seu papel na cadeia de custódia das provas. Conclusão e implicações para a prática Ações que visem capacitar os enfermeiros. A criação de protocolos, de forma a ampliar e implementar políticas públicas já existentes, são imprescindíveis para o fortalecimento da atuação do enfermeiro na preservação de vestígios nos casos de violência sexual contra a mulher.

ABSTRACT Objective to analyze the challenges for nurses' performance of trace preservation in cases of sexual violence against women discussed in the literature. Method this is an integrative review carried out in the SCOPUS, Cochrane, LILACS, MEDLINE and CINAHL databases and in Google Scholar in January 2021. The descriptors Sex Offenses and Forensic Nursing were used, combined with the Boolean operator AND. A total of 207 articles was found and 15 were selected. Results The identified challenges were: lack of human resources and training in forensic nursing; training of nurses to collect traces; limited performance of trace preservation procedures; conflicts between the nurse's role in care provision and in the collection of traces; absence of protocols or standardization of the existing ones; underreporting of sexual assault cases; lack of time and fear of liability or reprisal; absence of legal instruments to regulate the nurses’ attributions and role in the chain of evidence custody. Conclusion and implications for practice Actions aimed at training nurses and creating protocols, with expansion and implementation of the existing public policies, are essential to strengthen the role of nurses in trace preservation in cases of sexual violence against women.

RESUMEN Objetivo analizar los desafíos de la práctica del enfermero en la preservación de vestigios en casos de violencia sexual contra la mujer evidenciados en la literatura. Método revisión integrativa, realizada en las bases de datos SCOPUS, Cochrane, LILACS, MEDLINE, CINAHL y Google Académico en enero/2021. Se utilizaron los descriptores Sex offenses y Forensic Nursing, combinados con el operador booleano AND. Encontrados 207 artículos; 15 seleccionados. Resultados Desafíos identificados: falta de recursos humanos y capacitación en enfermería forense; formación de enfermeros para la recogida de rastros; ejecución limitada de procedimientos de conservación de vestigios; conflictos entre el papel del enfermero en el cuidado y en la recolección de huellas; ausencia de protocolos o estandarización de los existentes; subregistro de casos de agresión; falta de tiempo y temor de responsabilidad legal o represalias; ausencia de instrumentos legales que regulen las atribuciones de los enfermeros y su papel en la cadena de custodia probatoria. Conclusión e implicaciones para la práctica Acciones dirigidas a la formación de enfermeros y elaboración de protocolos con ampliación e implementación de las políticas públicas existentes son fundamentales para fortalecer el papel de los enfermeros en la preservación de vestigios en casos de violencia sexual contra la mujer.

The Influence of Different Concentrations of a Natural Clay Material as Active Principle in Cosmetic Formulations

Abstract The clay minerals have characteristics and properties that allow their applicability in the cosmetic area, being incorporated into formulations as an active principle. Therefore, the aim of this work is characterizing and evaluating the influence of a clay from Miracema do Norte, Tocantins, Brazil, named Clay V, on the physicochemical characteristics of a hydrophilic gel of Aristoflex®, a copolymer of the neutralized acryloyldimethyltaurate and vinylpyrrolidone sulphonic acid. Clay V was decontaminated and characterized through microbiological evaluation, crystalline phases present by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), chemical composition by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and granulometric distribution by sieving. Gels were prepared using Clay V with particles in the range ≤ 180 μm in three different concentrations: 1%, 3% and 5% (w/w) and a standard gel without clay. The formulations were evaluated according to organoleptic characteristics, pH, viscosity, spreadability and the centrifugation test. The microbiological evaluation showed that the clay sample is in compliance with the parameters established by the legislation. The following mineral phases were identified by XRD: kaolinite, illite, vermiculite and quartz, mainly composed of silica and alumina according to XRF. Thermal analysis showed that the clay has two thermal decomposition reactions, the largest being 547.6°C. The granulometric analysis identified that the largest fraction (63.22%) was of particles with sizes greater than 710 μm. The organoleptic characteristics presented by the formulations were suitable, with characteristic gel odor, homogeneous appearance, soft and refreshing texture and staining based on the concentration of Clay V used. The obtained pH values were within the range between 5.5 and 6.5, and it was verified that the gel has high spreadability, distributing evenly on the skin. The values obtained for viscosity showed that the formulations are non-Newtonian fluids with pseudoplastic behavior. The centrifugation test showed that the formulations are stable, with no phase separation. The results obtained with the tests showed that the natural clay V material is beneficial in cosmetic products and can be used for incorporation in cosmetic gel formulations of Aristoflex® type.

RESUMO O estado nutricional do paciente submetido ao transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas é considerado fator de risco independente, podendo influenciar na qualidade de vida e na tolerância ao tratamento proposto. O comprometimento do estado nutricional durante o transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas ocorre principalmente devido aos efeitos adversos decorrentes do condicionamento ao qual o paciente é submetido. Desta forma, a adequada avaliação nutricional e o acompanhamento durante o transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas tornam-se imprescindíveis. Com o objetivo de salientar a importância do estado nutricional e da composição corporal durante o tratamento, bem como as principais características relacionadas à avaliação nutricional do paciente, o Consenso Brasileiro de Nutrição em Transplante de Células-Tronco Hematopoiéticas: Adulto foi elaborado visando uniformizar e atualizar a Terapia Nutricional nesta área. Com a participação de nutricionistas, nutrólogos e hematologistas de 15 centros brasileiros referências em transplante de células-tronco hematopoéticas

ABSTRACT The nutritional status of patients submitted to hematopoietic stem cell transplant is considered an independent risk factor, which may influence on quality of life and tolerance to the proposed treatment. The impairment of nutritional status during hematopoietic stem cell transplant occurs mainly due to the adverse effects resulting from conditioning to which the patient is subjected. Therefore, adequate nutritional evaluation and follow-up during hematopoietic stem cell transplant are essential. To emphasize the importance of nutritional status and body composition during treatment, as well as the main characteristics related to the nutritional assessment of the patient, the Brazilian Consensus on Nutrition in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant: Adults was prepared, aiming to standardize and update Nutritional Therapy in this area. Dietitians, nutrition physicians and hematologists from 15 Brazilian centers thar are references in hematopoietic stem cell transplant took part.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: We assessed the clinical-epidemiological profile of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients in the Santos region (São Paulo state) with the highest AIDS prevalence in Brazil. METHODS Information was extracted from records of 409 AIDS-infected patients hospitalized between 2011 and 2016. RESULTS: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was diagnosed in 24.7% of patients during admission, and 39.6% of already diagnosed patients received highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) irregularly. The mortality rate was 19.1%, and the main secondary manifestations were neurotoxoplasmosis and tuberculosis. CONCLUSIONS: AIDS patients in the Santos region had high rates of late diagnosis and low treatment adherence.

Resumo Sergipe, localizado na região Nordeste do Brasil, é o único estado dessa região com ausência de estudos sobre a soroprevalência da leucose enzoótica bovina, havendo a necessidade da realização de pesquisas para verificação da situação atual da enfermidade. O objetivo do presente estudo foi realizar um inquérito soroepidemiológico da leucose enzoótica bovina em rebanhos bovinos do estado de Sergipe, dividido em três mesorregiões: Leste Sergipano, Agreste Sergipano e Sertão Sergipano. Em cada mesorregião foram selecionados os cinco municípios com o maior efetivo bovino, totalizando 780 amostras coletadas, dentre machos e fêmeas, de faixas etárias diversas, provenientes de 52 propriedades dos municípios visitados. Todas as amostras de soro foram submetidas ao teste de imunodifusão em gel de ágar (IDGA), obtendo-se resultados positivos para anticorpos antivírus da leucose bovina (anti-VLB) em 11,92% (93/780) dos animais. Dentre as propriedades, 59,61% (31/52) apresentaram animais reagentes, sendo que, dos 15 municípios visitados, apenas dois não apresentaram animais sororreagentes. De acordo com os resultados obtidos, ficou confirmada a presença de anticorpos contra o agente etiológico nos rebanhos bovinos sergipanos, reforçando a necessidade de instituir medidas de controle e prevenção eficazes contra a leucose bovina, com o objetivo de controlar a doença no estado e conhecer melhor a sua epidemiologia.

Abstract The state of Sergipe, located in the Northeast of Brazil, is the only state in the region with absence of studies on the seroprevalence of Enzootic Bovine Leukosis. Therefore, there is a need of research to verify the current status of the disease. The aim of this study was to conduct a seroepidemiological inquiry of enzootic bovine leukosis in cattle herds in the state of Sergipe, which was divided into three mesoregions: East Sergipe, Agreste Sergipe (dry and wild area of Sergipe) and Sertão Sergipe (arid, badlands of Sergipe). In each mesoregion, we selected the five counties with the largest cattle population, totaling 780 samples collected from males and females at all ages, from 52 farms of the visited counties. All serum samples were submitted to the test of agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) and positive results were obtained for anti-virus antibodies of bovine leukosis (anti-VLB) in 11.92% (93/780) of the animals. Among the farms, 59.61% (31/52) presented seropositive animals, and from the 15 counties visited, only two of them did not show seropositive animals. According to the results, the presence of the etiologic agent in cattle in Sergipe was confirmed, reinforcing the need to institute effective measures of control and prevention against Enzootic bovine, in order to control the disease in the state and better understand its epidemiology.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory molecules play a role in the development of atherosclerosis, which is the primary origin of cardiovascular disorders. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has attempted to investigate the relationship between these circulating molecules and the prediction of cardiovascular risk. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, E-selectin and matrix metalloproteinase 9 serum concentrations with the extent of coronary lesions. METHODS: Seventy-four individuals who were undergoing coronary angiography for the first time for diagnostic purposes were enrolled in this study. The extent of the coronary lesion was assessed using the Friesinger Index, and subjects were classified into four groups: no lesions, minor lesions, intermediate lesions and major lesions. Serum biochemical parameters and serum concentrations of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, intercellular adhesion molecule-1, E-selectin and matrix metalloproteinase 9 were analyzed. RESULTS: The vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 concentration was higher than 876 ng/mL in individuals with intermediate and major lesions (p<0.001 and p=0.020, respectively). Moreover, logistic regression analysis showed that these patients had an increased risk of having an intermediate lesion (p=0.007). Interestingly, all individuals with major lesions had vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 concentrations higher than 876 ng/mL. No association was found between the concentrations of the other proteins and the Friesinger Index. CONCLUSIONS: Serum vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 may be associated with the extent of coronary lesions. Moreover, it may represent an alternative to improve the cardiovascular risk classification in patients without acute coronary syndrome.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the quantitative histology and testicular biometrics in zebu bulls of different breeds. Testicular fragments of Nelore (n=10), Polled Nelore (n=6), Gir (n=5), Guzerat (n=5) and Tabapuã bulls (n=5) were used. The fragments were perfusion-fixed in Karnovsky solution, embedded in glycol methacrylate and stained with toluidine blue-1% sodium borate. The Nelore animals had a higher tubular volumetric proportion (85.2%) and greater height of the seminiferous epithelium (73.2 µm) than the Gir, Guzerat and Tabapuã breeds. The Nelore animals also had a higher volumetric proportion of Leydig cells (5.2%) than the Guzerat and Tabapuã breeds. There was no significant difference for any of these parameters between the Nelore and Polled Nelore breeds. The gonadosomatic index, seminiferous tubule diameter, cross-sectional area of the seminiferous tubule and tubule length (total length and length per gram of testicular parenchyma) did not vary among the breeds studied. The morphometric parameters evaluated suggested that the genetic selection applied to the Nelore and Polled Nelore breeds improved the efficiency of spermatogenesis in these breeders.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between the frequency of micronuclei (MN) and the cellular changes detected in the conventional Papanicolaou test. One hundred and seventy-four Papanicolaou test smears with cellular changes were examined. MN screening was done in cytopathological smears by counting 1,000 cervical cells in a light microscope. MN frequencies were significantly higher in the group with cellular changes compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The mean MN frequencies were 0.95 ± 1.12 (mean ± SD) in the control group (n = 223), 2.98 ± 1.20 in individuals with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) (n = 50), 4.04 ± 1.45 in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I (n = 52), 5.97 ± 1.83 in CIN II (n = 30), 7.29 ± 1.55 in CIN III (n = 17) and 8.64 ± 1.55 in invasive cancer (n = 25). These findings suggest that MN monitoring should be included as an additional criterion for the early detection of cytogenetic damage in routine examinations. This monitoring should be done in the same smear as used for cytopathological examination. More specific and systematic studies are necessary to confirm this proposal.
