Abstract This article aims to present a portrait of cooperativism in Brazil, from the years of 2010 to 2018. Starting from a historical perspective, we describe the different branches of cooperativism and then analyze the context of the Brazilian cooperative movement, taking into account some of the main characteristics that make it possible to draw a profile of the movement, such as: number of cooperatives, number of cooperative members and total jobs generated. The data were segmented by line of business, according to the classification proposed by the Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives (OCB). As for the methodological procedures, the study was defined as bibliographic-descriptive and qualitative; bibliographic-descriptive, since it was based on the organization and analysis of existing materials, describing the properties of the cooperative phenomenon; and qualitative, since the aim was to interpret meanings, not seeking regularities, but the understanding of the object studied. Finally, from the interpretation of the information gathered, it was possible to perceive the importance of cooperativism in the Brazilian context, not only in terms of facing specific issues, but also in relation to its potential for expansion and as a viable alternative for the social and economic inclusion of the most vulnerable strata, capable of expanding the democratic frontiers to the organizational field.

Resumen El presente artículo pretende presentar un retrato del cooperativismo en Brasil, desde 2010 hasta 2018. Partiendo de una perspectiva histórica, describimos las diferentes ramas del cooperativismo y luego analizamos el contexto del movimiento cooperativo brasileño, teniendo en cuenta algunas de las principales características que permiten dibujar un perfil del movimiento, tales como: número de cooperativas, número de cooperativistas y total de empleos generados. Los datos fueron segmentados por campos de actividad, según la clasificación propuesta por la Organización de Cooperativas Brasileñas (OCB). En cuanto a los procedimientos metodológicos, el estudio se definió como bibliográfico-descriptivo y cualitativo; bibliográfico-descriptivo, ya que se basó en la organización y el análisis de los materiales existentes, describiendo las propiedades del fenómeno cooperativo; y cualitativo, ya que el objetivo fue interpretar significados, no buscando regularidades, sino la comprensión del objeto estudiado. Finalmente, a partir de la interpretación de las informaciones recogidas, fue posible percibir la importancia del cooperativismo en el contexto brasileño, no sólo en cuanto al abordaje de cuestiones específicas, sino también en relación a su potencial de expansión y como alternativa viable para la inclusión social y económica de las capas más vulnerables, capaz de ampliar las fronteras democráticas al campo organizativo.

Por fim, a partir da interpretação das informações levantadas, foi possível perceber a importância do cooperativismo no contexto brasileiro, não apenas no tocante ao enfrentamento de questões pontuais, como também em relação ao seu potencial de expansão e como alternativa viável para a inclusão social e econômica dos estratos mais vulneráveis, capaz de expandir as fronteiras democráticas para o campo organizacional.

Abstract This research analyzes and compares the professional training programs for handball sports coaches in three Latin American countries: Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina. The study is of a qualitative nature and presents a critical documentary analysis. In this way, three training courses for handball coaches were mapped in the main online databases, establishing comparisons between their pedagogical structures and training curricula. The results showed that the courses have differences in their pedagogical structure in terms of duration and training format. The Uruguayan and Argentinian course is modular in nature, granting different certifications by level, and the Paraguayan course is of longer duration, thus offering a broad certification for the professional. On the other hand, the curricula emphasized on different areas, Argentina having a greater focus on the specific components of the handball modality, Uruguay highlighting subjects related to the health disciplines, and finally, Paraguay presenting a balanced curriculum as regards the distribution of contents. Therefore, this research is significant because it deepens reflection on the professional training of the handball coach in different realities and contexts, also pointing out the need to broaden the discussion about the handball training courses in Latin America.

Resumo A pesquisa analisa e compara os programas de formação profissional do técnico desportivo de handebol em três países da América Latina: Paraguai, Uruguai e Argentina. O estudo é de natureza qualitativa do tipo análise crítico-documental. Dessa forma, mapeamos três cursos de formação de técnicos desportivos de handebol nos principais bancos de dados online, estabelecendo comparativos entre suas estruturas pedagógicas e currículos de formação. Os resultados apontaram que os cursos possuem diferenças na estrutura pedagógica no que diz respeito à duração e o formato de formação. O Curso uruguaio e argentino de natureza modular, conferindo diferentes certificações por nível, e o curso paraguaio, de maior duração, portanto ofertando uma certificação ampla para o profissional. Por outro lado, os currículos apresentaram diferentes ênfases, sendo a Argentina com maior foco nos componentes específicos da modalidade de handebol, o Uruguai com ênfase nas disciplinas da área da saúde, e por último, o Paraguai apresentando uma grade curricular equilibrada nas distribuições dos conteúdos. Portanto, essa pesquisa apresenta sua importância em levantar a reflexão acerca da formação profissional do técnico de handebol em diferentes realidades e contextos, apontando também a necessidade de ampliar a discussão sobre os cursos de formação desportiva de handebol na América Latina.

Abstract: Eucalyptus planted forests contribute to maximizing lumber production but problems such as longitudinal growth strain can negatively influence the quality of the products. Knowing dendrometric variables and wood properties can help in the prediction of longitudinal growth strain, mainly with the help of artificial intelligence. Thus, the aim of this research was to evaluate the use of artificial neural networks to predict longitudinal growth strain in Eucalyptus trees based on dendrometric variables, spacing between trees and wood density. The longitudinal growth strain was measured in trees of four Eucalyptus clones planted in three spacings. The diameter and height of each tree were measured. The basic wood density was determined. Artificial neural networks were used to estimate longitudinal growth strain as a function of dendrometric variables, tree spacing and wood density. The results showed that the artificial neural networks presented good results for training and validation, with most of them resulting in high correlation coefficient values. The trained artificial neural networks showed a correlation coefficient above 0,56. Artificial neural networks showed that the variables clone and basic wood density were the ones that most contributed to the prediction of longitudinal growth strain. On the other hand, the spacing between trees, the height of the tree and the diameter at breast height were not relevant to predict growth stresses.

ABSTRACT. There are few new black oat cultivars in Brazil; therefore a reduced number of cultivars are available for the most varied production regions. Strategies aimed at studying genetic variability, such as mutation induction, of the few cultivars available on the market represent alternatives to increase the variety in this sector. The objective of the present study was to prepare a scientometric analysis of studies of the genetic improvement of black oats (Avena strigosa L). The literature review was performed using data from the Web of Science (WoS) from 1945 to 2020. Initially, 859 articles were analyzed, which after refinement, were reduced to 404 for further analysis. This study provides a new method for quantitatively visualizing information regarding the development of this area over time. After searching and refining with the aid of the CiteSpace software (5.6 R4), graphic representations were developed of the scientific journals, authors, countries, subject categories, organizations, and individual publications extracted from the WoS. The results of the analysis indicated a growing trend in the number of publications on the genetic improvement of black oats, as well as the number of citations over the years studied.

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze isolated and combined associations of physical inactivity excessive screen time with negative self-rated health, according to sex, among school adolescents. Methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted with 2,517 adolescents in Amazonas State, participants were asked about their self-rated health with the following question: How do you rate your health? Responses were dichotomized into positive (excellent and good) and negative (regular, bad, and terrible). Information on sex, age group, family income, physical activity, and screen time (watching TV, using a computer, or playing video games) was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Adolescents simultaneously classified as physically inactive (<60 min/day) and having excessive screen time (>2 h/day) were considered to have two risk factors. Data was analyzed using binary logistic regression. Results: Out of every 10 adolescents, 2 had a negative self-rated health. After adjusting for age and family income, there were no isolated or combined associations between physical inactivity or excessive screen time and negative self-rated health in girls. In boys, negative self-rated health was associated with insufficient levels of physical activity (odds ratio [OR]: 2.39; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–5.59) and with the accumulation of two risk factors (OR: 1.61; 95%CI 1.10–2.34). Conclusions: Being insufficiently active and the combination of physical inactivity and excessive screen time become exposure factors to the negative self-rated health of adolescent boys.

RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar a associação isolada e combinada do tempo excessivo de tela e inatividade física com a autopercepção negativa de saúde, de acordo com o sexo, em adolescentes estudantes. Métodos: Estudo transversal conduzido em 2.517 adolescentes amazonenses, os quais foram questionados sobre a autopercepção de saúde: “Como você considera a sua saúde?”, dicotomizada em positiva (excelente, boa) e negativa (regular, ruim, péssima). Informações sobre sexo, faixa etária, renda familiar, atividade física e tempo excessivo de tela (assistindo TV, usando o computador ou jogando videogame) foram coletadas mediante questionário autoadministrado. Aqueles classificados, simultaneamente, como fisicamente inativos (<60 min/dia) e com tempo excessivo de tela (>2 horas/dia) foram considerados com dois fatores de risco. Os dados foram analisados utilizando-se a regressão logística binária. Resultados: Dois em cada dez adolescentes apresentaram autopercepção negativa de saúde. Após o ajuste pelas variáveis idade e renda familiar, não foram observadas, no sexo feminino, associações da inatividade física e do tempo excessivo de tela, de maneira isolada ou agrupada, com a autopercepção negativa de saúde. No sexo masculino, a percepção negativa de saúde foi associada com os níveis insuficientes de atividade física (odds ratio — OR: 2,39; intervalo de confiança — IC95% 1,03–5,59) e com o acúmulo de dois fatores de risco (OR: 1,61; IC95% 1,10–2,34). Conclusões: Ser insuficientemente ativo e associar a inatividade física com tempo excessivo de tela tornam-se fatores de exposição à percepção negativa em saúde de meninos adolescentes.

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

Abstract The shape of the galls can be adjusted by factors such as natural enemies and climatic conditions to which the galls are subjected. Studies that evaluate the climatic regime as a possible driver of the morphology of galls are scarce and do not consider Neotropical systems. To fill this knowledge gap, this study evaluated the influence of seasonality on the morphology of Cecidomyiidae galls induced on Myrcia neoobscura (Myrtaceae) growing in the Cerrado of Bahia. A total of 270 galls were sampled during the dry and rainy seasons. The average monthly precipitation was obtained. The galls were refrigerated, weighed, and measured within 72 h of collection. The average weight of the galls ranged from 0.106 g to 0.780 g; while, the volume ranged from 35.07 mm3 to 726.70 mm3 and the surface area from 20.03 mm2 to 719.57 mm2. The average weight, volume, and surface area of galls were approximately 50% higher during the rainy season than during the dry season. These three variables were also positively related to average precipitation. These results support the hypothesis that seasonality may contribute to the observed variation in the final shape of galls on a local scale.

Survival of young and elderly adults with oral squamous cell carcinoma in a population in northeastern Brazil

Aim To compare the profile and overall survival of young adults and elderly people diagnosed with SCC. Methods A retrospective study was carried out at a High Complexity Oncology Unit, between 2010 and 2016. A descriptive analysis, a bivariate analysis using the chi-square and Fisher’s exact test and the Kaplan-Meier estimator were performed. The predictor variables were tested using the log-rank test and those with statistical significance and the literature were maintained for the Cox regression model. Results 282 cases of SCC were recorded, with only 12.4% diagnosed in young adults. The profile was similar between groups, with the majority of cases of the disease occurring in males, smokers and alcohol consumers. The lesions predominantly located on the tongue and were diagnosed in an advanced stage of the disease, resulting in 35.7% of deaths. The median survival time was 30 months in the elderly and 31 months in young people. In the multivariate analysis, age was not statistically significant, only staging and treatment were predictors of reduced overall survival. Conclusion Tumor staging, and treatment were prognostic factors for the disease.

The theory of cognitive learning proposed by educational psychologist Jean Piaget is widely cited by educators and researchers to legitimize their educational practices and support their scientific studies. The theme in question has great relevance in the educational environment due to its contributions to the pedagogical process. In view of this, the present work aims to relate the theories about cognitive development in the perspectives of Piaget and cognitive neuroscience, in order to identify their contributions to the teaching of physics through the comparison between texts of the available literature on these theories. These potentialities have already been addressed by some research that applied neuroscience knowledge to the adoption of innovative teaching strategies in the physical curricular component. In addition, there is great encouragement from their intersection with curricular guidelines related to the initial training of basic education teachers in order to understand how students learn. Thus, in order to be successful in its implementation, it is urgent to include subjects in the curricula of teacher training courses that connect cognitive psychology to cognitive neuroscience, applying neuroscientific advances in schools in order to produce improvements in physics teaching.

La teoría del aprendizaje cognitivo propuesta por el psicólogo educativo Jean Piaget es ampliamente citada por educadores e investigadores para legitimar sus prácticas educativas y sustentar sus estudios científicos. El tema en cuestión tiene gran relevancia en el ámbito educativo por sus aportes al proceso pedagógico. Ante ello, el presente trabajo tiene como objetivo relacionar las teorías sobre el desarrollo cognitivo en las perspectivas de Piaget y la neurociencia cognitiva, con el fin de identificar sus aportes a la enseñanza de la física a través de la comparación entre textos de la literatura disponible sobre estas teorías. Estas potencialidades ya han sido abordadas por algunas investigaciones que aplicaron conocimientos de neurociencias a la adopción de estrategias didácticas innovadoras en el componente curricular físico. Además, existe un gran estímulo desde su intersección con lineamientos curriculares relacionados con la formación inicial de docentes de educación básica para comprender cómo aprenden los estudiantes. Por lo tanto, para tener éxito en su implementación, es urgente incluir en los planes de estudio de los cursos de formación docente materias que conecten la psicología cognitiva con la neurociencia cognitiva, aplicando los avances neurocientíficos en las escuelas para producir mejoras en la enseñanza de la física.

A teoria da aprendizagem cognitiva proposta pelo psicólogo educacional Jean Piaget é amplamente citada por educadores e pesquisadores para a legitimação de suas práticas educativas e embasamento de seus estudos científicos. A temática em questão tem grande relevância no meio educacional devido às suas contribuições para o processo pedagógico. Em vista disso, o presente trabalho visa relacionar as teorias acerca do desenvolvimento cognitivo nas perspectivas de Piaget e da neurociência cognitiva, a fim de identificar as suas contribuições para o ensino de física por meio do cotejamento entre textos da literatura disponível acerca destas teorias. Potencialidades estas já abordadas por algumas pesquisas que aplicaram os saberes da neurociência para a adoção de estratégias de ensino inovadoras no componente curricular física. Além disso, há grande estímulo de sua interseção por diretrizes curriculares relacionadas à formação inicial de professores da educação básica a fim de compreender como os alunos aprendem. Desse modo, para que se obtenha êxito em sua implementação, é urgente a inserção de disciplinas nos currículos dos cursos de formação de professores que conectem a psicologia cognitiva à neurociência cognitiva, aplicando os avanços neurocientíficos nas escolas de modo a produzir melhorias no ensino de física.

O presente estudo objetivou analisar os dados de simulações de dois algoritmos quânticos diferentes: Algoritmo de Deutsch e a Transformada de Fourier Quântica. Para tal abordagem foi utilizado o framework Qiskit na realização das simulações dos algoritmos anteriormente apresentados. Tais simulações se deram na máquina local (computador clássico) e nos chips quânticos da International Business Machines (IBM) via nuvem. Na máquina local, os resultados obtidos são os previstos pela teoria. Nos protótipos da IBM, no entanto, pequenas flutuações de erro puderam ser observadas. Todavia, os estados quânticos esperados foram obtidos com ótima probabilidade. Nossos resultados mostram que os computadores quânticos utilizados são robustos para os algoritmos estudados, sendo essa uma maneira bastante intuitiva para o ensino dos conceito de informação e computação quântica para o estudantes do ciclo profissional (técnico) da graduação.

The present study aimed to analyze the simulation data of two different quantum algorithms: Deutsch Algorithm and the Quantum Fourier Transform. In order to execute this, has been used the Qiskit framework to implement the afore mentioned algotihms. Such simulations took place on local machine (classic computer) and on the quantum chips of International Business Machines (IBM) via cloud. On the local machine the results obtained are those predicted by the theory. In IBM prototypes, small error fluctuations have been observed. However, the expected states were obtained with high probability. Our results show that the quantum computers are robust to the studied algorithms, been this an intuitive way to teach the concepts of quantum information and computation to students in the professional (techinical) level of graduation.

RESUMO Introdução: Em várias condições, a estabilidade dos resultados é um grande desafio para a Ortodontia. Estudos prévios relataram que a recidiva ocorre, comumente, ao longo dos anos, após o término do tratamento ortodôntico. Objetivo: O objetivo da presente pesquisa foi avaliar as alterações transversais da arcada dentária em longo prazo de pacientes Classe II, divisão 1, tratados com aparelho extrabucal cervical e aparelho fixo. Métodos: Modelos de gesso de 20 pacientes tratados com AEB cervical, sem extrações dentárias, foram escaneados e avaliados em três momentos distintos: inicial (T1), pós-tratamento imediato (T2) e acompanhamento de longo prazo (T3, mínimo de 20 anos). A distância transversal entre os caninos superiores e inferiores, pré-molares e primeiros molares foi medida. Resultados: Foi observado aumento estatisticamente significativo durante o tratamento para todas as distâncias transversais dos dentes superiores (p < 0,05). Por sua vez, foi observada redução significativa em longo prazo (p < 0,05). Para os dentes inferiores, a distância transversal intercaninos apresentou constrição estatisticamente significativa no período de contenção (p < 0,05). A distância dos primeiros molares inferiores aumentou significativamente com o tratamento (p < 0,05) e permaneceu estável em longo prazo. As alterações observadas para os outros dentes ou outros tempos foram consideradas sem significância estatística. Conclusões: Para a amostra estudada, as alterações transversais ocorreram durante as fases de tratamento e contenção em pacientes Classe II, divisão 1, tratados com aparelho extrabucal de tração cervical e aparelho fixo. A recidiva foi considerada estatisticamente significativa, mesmo com a instituição de um protocolo de contenção.

ABSTRACT Introduction: In several conditions, outcome stability is a great challenge for Orthodontics. Previous studies have reported that relapse commonly occurs along the years after orthodontic treatment finishing. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate in the long-term transversal dental arch changes of Class II division 1 patients treated with cervical headgear and fixed appliance. Methods: Plaster study casts of 20 patients treated with cervical headgear without dental extractions were 3D-scanned and evaluated in three distinct times: initial (T1), immediate post-treatment (T2) and long-term retention (T3 - minimum 20 years). Transversal teeth distance of maxillary and mandibular canines, premolars and first molars were measured. Results: A statistically significant increase during treatment was observed for all maxillary teeth transversal distances (p< 0.05). In turn, a significant reduction was observed in the long term (p<0.05). For the mandibular teeth, canine transversal distance presented statistically significant constriction in the retention period (p<0.05). Mandibular first molars distance was significantly expanded by treatment (p<0.05) and remained stable in the long term. The changes observed for the other teeth or other times were considered not statistically relevant. Conclusions: For the accessed sample, transversal changes occurred during treatment and retention phases in Class II division 1 patients treated with cervical headgear and fixed appliance. Relapse was considered statistically relevant, even with the institution of a retention protocol.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar os partos com leve ou severa dificuldade e diferenciá-los com base no desempenho produtivo e reprodutivo de vacas leiteiras. Os partos foram agrupados em partos sem assistência, partos com baixa assistência e partos com elevada assistência. O banco de dados original continha 1902 registro de partos que foram obtidos de uma grande fazenda comercial localizada no Sudeste do Brasil. A análise fatorial foi aplicada através do programa estatístico SAS® Studio 3.8 por meio de procedimento fatorial, considerando a categoria de análise multivariada. Os teores de gordura do leite (0,92– 0,79) e de sólidos totais (0,91–0,80) foram altamente correlacionados com o fator 1. Intervalo entre partos (0,87–0,68) e número de IA (inseminações artificiais) por concepção (0,87–0,71) apresentaram alta correlação com o fator 2. Produção de leite (0,84–0,76) e produção acumulada de leite (0,84–0,77) foram altamente correlacionados com o fator 3. Baseados nos resultados, é possível concluir que as três situações de parto foram caracterizadas por fatores independentes e bem definidos. Vacas que necessitaram de alta assistência ao parto apresentaram menor variância explicada pelo modelo para teores de gordura e sólidos totais do leite, intervalo entre partos e número de IA por concepção.

Abstract The objective of this study was to characterize calvings with low and high difficulty based on the productive and reproductive performance of dairy cows. Calvings were grouped in no calving assistance, calving with low assistance, and calving with high assistance. The original data set comprised 1,902 calving records obtained from a large dairy farm in Southeast Brazil. Factor analysis was applied using the SAS® Studio 3.8 statistical program through the factor procedure, considering the Multivariate Analysis category. Milk fat (0.92–0.79) and total solids (0.91–0.80) were strongly correlated with Factor 1. Calving interval (0.87– 0.68) and the number of AI (artificial inseminations) per conception (0.87–0.71) showed high correlations with Factor 2. Milk yield (0.84–0.76) and accumulated milk yield (0.84–0.77) were strongly correlated with Factor 3. Based on the results, we conclude that the three calving scenarios were characterized by well-defined and independent factors. Cows which required a high assistance at calving showed a lower variance explained by the model for milk fat and total solids contents, calving interval, and the number of AIs per conception.

RESUMO Este artigo objetiva mapear e analisar as principais leis esportivas e órgãos governamentais oficiais que regulamentam e gerem o esporte na América Latina, compreendendo a natureza dos documentos e seus elementos centrais constitutivos, a saber: título, ano de criação e objetivos gerais. Trata-se de um estudo do tipo exploratório e documental, utiliza a crítica-documental, o método comparativo e o paradigma indiciário como abordagem teórico-metodológica. As fontes são compostas pelas Leis esportivas oficiais de 19 países da América Latina. As análises nos permitiram estabelecer as seguintes categorias: a) países cujas leis esportivas são específicas e que contém apenas o termo esporte em seu nome; b) países cujas leis esportivas são identificadas com números; c) países cujas leis esportivas possuem nomenclatura mista. Doze países conceituam o esporte na íntegra em seus documentos. Percebemos que a maneira como o esporte é apresentado nas leis demonstra os sinais e rastros de como ele é pensado, visto e materializado. Entendemos que as leis se configuram como um importante marco para o desenvolvimento do esporte latino. Além delas, apontamos que é fundamental que seja pensada uma política esportiva a médio e longo prazo em cada contexto específico.

ABSTRACT This article aims to map and analyze the main sports laws and official government bodies that regulate and manage sports in Latin America, comprising the nature of the documents and their central constitutive elements, namely: title, year of creation, and general objectives. This is an exploratory and documentary study using critical-documentary analysis, the comparative method and the evidential paradigm as a theoretical-methodological approach. The sources are composed of the official sports laws of 19 countries in Latin America. The analyses allowed us to establish the following categories: a) countries whose sports laws are specific and contain only the term sports in their name; b) countries whose sports laws are identified with numbers; c) countries whose sports laws have mixed nomenclature. Twelve countries conceptualize sports in full in their documents. We perceive that the way sports are presented in the laws shows the signs and traces of how they are thought, seen and materialized. We understand that the laws are an important milestone for the development of Latin sports. Beyond the laws, we point out that it is of paramount importance that a medium- and long-term sports policy be thought out in each specific context.

Resumo Os ecossistemas naturais estão sob grave ameaça em todo o mundo e as políticas ambientais são essenciais para minimizar os impactos presentes e futuros na biodiversidade, nos serviços ecossistêmicos e nas mudanças climáticas. O Novo Código Florestal no Brasil é a principal política de proteção da vegetação nativa em terras privadas, que compreende 54% da vegetação nativa remanescente brasileira. No entanto, os conflitos entre as preocupações ambientais e agrícolas na sua implementação exigem soluções equilibradas e baseadas em evidências científicas. Para enfrentar o desafio de aplicar a ciência no estabelecimento de políticas ambientais, desenvolvemos um projeto científico financiado pela Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) para apoiar a implementação do Novo Código Florestal no Estado de São Paulo, como parte do Programa Biota/FAPESP. O projeto foi conduzido de forma diferente de um projeto de pesquisa regular: o objetivo amplo foi fornecer suporte científico para a implementação do Novo Código Florestal pelo Estado, a partir de uma interação participativa entre as partes interessadas para construir objetivos específicos, métodos e discussão de resultados, dentro de uma equipe de pesquisa interdisciplinar e intersetorial. Aqui, apresentamos as lições aprendidas durante e após os quatro anos de desenvolvimento do projeto de pesquisa para avaliar como o conhecimento científico pode ser produzido e adotado na implementação de uma política ambiental específica. Apresentamos os principais resultados e os desafios enfrentados na tentativa de incluir dados científicos no processo decisório. Apresentamos também desafios atuais e futuros na implementação do Novo Código Florestal que podem ser resolvidos com evidências científicas. As lições aprendidas mostraram que mesmo concebendo o projeto de forma a atender as necessidades de apoio à implementação da política ambiental, evitando dificuldades normalmente apontadas por projetos semelhantes, houve uma grande dificuldade para que contribuições científicas fossem adotadas no processo decisório. A maioria das informações e conselhos científicos, mesmo após discussão e entendimento comum entre um grupo diversificado de partes interessadas, foi ignorada nas fases finais de tomada de decisão.

Abstract Natural ecosystems are under severe threat worldwide and environmental policies are essential to minimize present and future impacts on biodiversity, ecosystem services and climate change. The New Forest Act in Brazil is the main policy to protect native vegetation in private lands, which comprise 54% of the remaining Brazilian native vegetation. However, conflicts between environmental and agricultural concerns in its implementation demand for balanced solutions based on scientific evidence. To face the challenge of applying science in environmental policy establishment, we developed a scientific project funded by the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP) to support the implementation of the New Forest Act in São Paulo State, as part of the Biota/FAPESP Program. The project was conducted differently from a regular research project: the broad objective was to provide scientific support to the State’s implementation of the New Forest Act, based on a participatory interaction among stakeholders to build specific objectives, methods, and discussion of results, within an interdisciplinary and intersectoral research team. Here, we present the lessons learned during and after the four years of the research project development to evaluate how scientific knowledge can be produced and adopted in the implementation of a specific environmental policy. We present the main outcomes and the challenges faced in trying to include scientific data in the decision-making process. We also present current and future challenges in the New Forest Act implementation that could be solved with scientific evidence. The lessons learned showed that even designing the project in order to meet the needs to support the implementation of the environmental policy, avoiding difficulties normally pointed out by similar projects, there was a great difficulty for scientific contributions to be adopted in the decision-making process. Most of the scientific information and advice, even after discussion and common understanding among a diverse stakeholder group, were ignored or over-ruled in the final decision-making phases.

Abstract This research article describes the effect of different concentrations of iodine in the teat-dipping before milking and post-dipping solution on milk, urine, thyroid hormone, chemical composition and somatic cell count. Four multiparous cows were distributed in a 4 x 4 Latin square experimental design in a tie-stall system. The treatments were 0.5%, 1%, and 2% iodine and the control was treated with chlorhexidine. The iodine concentration of milk, food and urine was quantified. Thyroid hormones were analyzed by chemiluminescence microparticle immunoassay. Milk composition by differential absorption of infrared waves and somatic cell countby (SCC) flow cytometry. There was no significant effect of iodine concentrations in teats soaking solution before milking on urine iodine concentration and thyroid hormones (T3 and T4). Likewise, no effect of treatments was observed for the contents of protein, fat, lactose, total solids, Milk urea nitrogen and SCC. However, increasing iodine concentrations in the teat soaking solution before milking linearly increased the iodine concentration in milk. Therefore, the iodine concentration in the pre-milking and post-dipping solutions can change the iodine concentration in the milk.
