Abstract The oil from the fruit of peach palm or Pupunha (Bactris gasipaes) is an example of a material with low-cost and good antioxidant capacity. However, Conventional methods for measuring oil content are time-consuming, labor-intensive and use toxic chemicals. In this sense, the aim of this study was evaluated fast and non-destructive spectroscopy methods, such as Near Infrared (NIR) and Time-Domain Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (TD-NMR) (CPMG and ROSE pulse sequences), to quantify the oil content in pupunha flours collected in the amazon forest. For this, 93 samples were used and the results showed three distinct levels of oil in the samples: high, medium and low oil content. Furthermore, the determination coefficient (R2) reached values of 0.92, 0.92 and 0.70 for NIR, TD-NMR (ROSE) and TD-NMR (CPMG), respectively. Therefore, the NIR and TD-NMR (ROSE) methods demonstrate a higher prediction efficiency, with the NIR achieving 100% classification of the samples.

Abstract The use of Echinacea purpurea (EP), a plant native from North America, is widely diffused throughout the world, presenting many pharmacological applications, mainly for the treatment of infections of respiratory and urinary tracts. Due to the widespread commercialization of EP-based products, an effective evaluation of their pharmacological properties is essential to assure efficacy during clinical use. In this study, in vitro tests were performed to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of dried extracts of EP by the microdilution method. In addition, a phagocytosis model was employed to assess the immunomodulatory potential of the extracts. The increase in reactive oxygen species production, as well as the intracellular proliferation rate of Cryptococcus gatti after phagocytosis by macrophages in the presence of EP dried extracts were also evaluated. The analyzed samples showed no significant antibacterial activity; however, a slight antifungal activity was verified. Positive effects of EP extracts on the modulation of cellular immune response were observed in different experiments, indicating that this mechanism may contribute to the control and treatment of infections.

Resumo A durabilidade dos materiais está diretamente ligada a sua capacidade de resistir aos agentes de deterioração. Nesse contexto, as estruturas de concreto podem estar sujeitas aos efeitos da umidade e do sal, reduzindo consideravelmente o seu tempo de vida útil. Os sais que entram pelos poros do concreto podem atacar sua armadura, bem como se concentrar em alguns pontos e cristalizar, gerando trincas e fissuras e reduzindo, deste modo, a sua resistência. Nesse sentido, este trabalho apresenta um modelo matemático para o transporte acoplado de calor, umidade e sal em meios porosos. As equações governantes foram discretizadas por meio do método dos volumes finitos resolvidas simultaneamente a partir do algoritmo MultiTriDiagonal Matrix Algorithm (MTDMA). A verificação do modelo foi realizada a partir da comparação de estudos de casos obtidos na literatura, mostrando uma boa concordância entre os resultados.

Abstract The durability of materials is directly connected with deterioration agents. Hence, concrete structures can be subject to the effects of salt and moisture, significantly reducing their useful life. The salts that enter the concrete pores can attack its reinforcement. They can also accumulate at certain points and crystallize, leading to cracks and fractures and consequently reducing the resistance. This paper presents a mathematical model for the coupled heat, moisture and salt transportation in pores. The main equations were discretized through the finite volume method, solved simultaneously by the MultiTriDiagonal Matrix Algorithm. The verification of the model was made by comparing with studies from the literature and demonstrated good agreement between the outcomes.

Resumo Visando à diminuição do consumo de energia em edificações, devido ao uso de equipamentos de aquecimento, ventilação e ar condicionado, observa-se o aproveitamento do solo como fonte de energia. Por sua alta capacidade térmica, o solo atua como um reservatório térmico, aquecendo ou resfriando o ar do ambiente interno das edificações, conforme as condições climáticas aplicadas. Sendo assim, aplicou-se o método dos volumes finitos neste trabalho para análise do desempenho térmico desse tipo de trocador de calor solo-ar (TCSA). Inicialmente, os efeitos das propriedades térmicas do solo, da velocidade de escoamento do ar e do diâmetro do duto no desempenho térmico do TCSA foram investigados em regime permanente, por ser uma condição limite. Além disso, analisaram-se duas configurações para a distribuição do duto no solo (dois e quatro passos). A partir dos resultados, notou-se que o melhor desempenho para o TCSA foi obtido utilizando o solo saturado e operando com uma velocidade de ar de 2,5 m/s em um duto com diâmetro de 0,10 m. Em seguida, observou-se que uma distância entre as linhas de centro dos dutos de 0,5 m foi a mais apropriada. Adicionalmente, executaram-se simulações em regime transiente, empregando-se condições climáticas por meio de funções senoidais.

Abstract The use of soil as an energy source is aimed at reducingenergy consumption in buildings resulting from the use of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. Due to its high thermal capacity, soil acts as a thermal reservoir, heating or cooling the air inside buildings, depending on the localclimate conditions. In thisstudy, the finite volume method was used to analyse the thermal performance of this type of earth-airheat exchanger (EAHE). Initially, the effects of soil thermal properties, air velocity, and duct diameter on the thermal performance of the EAHE were investigated under steadystate, as it is a limit condition. In addition, two configurations for the duct distribution in the soil (two and four steps) were analysed. The resultsshowed that the best performance for the EAHE was obtained using saturated soil and operating with an air velocity of 2.5 m/s in a duct with a 0.10 m diameter, and that a 0.5 m distance between the duct’s center lines was the most appropriate. In addition, simulations were performed intransient state, applyingclimate conditions through sinusoidal functions.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o efeito da massagem ou pseudomassagem no desempenho do salto vertical. Quinze participantes foram submetidos aleatoriamente a três condições experimentais: massagem, pseudomassagem e repouso. A condição de massagem exigiu três saltos verticais unipodais seguidos de dois minutos de massagem manual nos músculos flexores plantares e, antes de executar outros três saltos, foi aplicada a Escala de Recuperação de Qualidade Total (TQR). As duas condições a seguir foram estruturadas com os mesmos procedimentos, no entanto, os participantes foram submetidos à pseudomassagem (simples-cego) ou a dois minutos de descanso. Os resultados não mostraram diferenças estatísticas na altura do salto entre as análises pré e pós, nem entre as condições experimentais (massagem 18,7 ± 4,1 vs. 18,2 ± 4,1; pseudomassagem 19,1 ± 4,0 vs. 18,3 ± 3,8; descanso 19,0 ± 4,0 vs. 18,7 ± 3,9 cm). Também não houve diferenças estatísticas no TQR entre as condições experimentais (massagem 16,2 ± 4,3; pseudomassagem 16,4 ± 3,9; descanso 15,9 ± 2,6 ua). Tanto a massagem quanto a pseudomassagem não afetaram o desempenho no salto vertical e na TQR.

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to verify the effect of massage or pseudo massage on vertical jump performance. Fifteen participants were randomly subjected to three experimental conditions: massage, pseudo massage and rest. The massage condition required three unipodal vertical jumps followed by two minutes of manual massage on plantar flexor muscles and, before performing another three jumps, the Total Quality Recover Scale (TQR) was applied. The two following conditions were structured with the same procedures, although participants were submitted either at pseudo massage (single-blinded) or two minutes of rest. Results showed no statistical differences on jump height between pre and post analysis nor between experimental conditions (massage 18.7 ± 4.1 vs 18.2 ± 4.1; pseudo massage 19.1 ± 4.0 vs 8.3 ± 3.8; rest 19.0 ± 4.0 vs 18.7 ± 3.9 cm). There were also no statistical differences in the TQR results between experimental conditions (massage 16.2 ± 4.3; pseudo massage 16.4 ± 3.9; rest 15.9 ± 2.6 ua). Both massage and pseudo massage did not affect performance on vertical jump and TQR.

Abstract AIMS This study aimed to verify th erelation ship between of anthropometric and physical performance variables with game-related statistics in professional elite basketball players during a competition. METHODS Eleven male basketball players were evaluated during 10 weeks in two distinct moments (regular season and playoffs). Overall, 11 variables of physical fitness and 13 variables of game-related statistics were analysed. RESULTS The following significant Pearson’scorrelations were found in regular season: percentage of fat mass with assists (r = -0.62) and steals (r = -0.63); height (r = 0.68), lean mass (r = 0.64), and maximum strength (r = 0.67) with blocks; squat jump with steals (r = 0.63); and time in the T-test with success ful two-point field-goals (r = -0.65), success ful free-throws (r = -0.61), and steals (r = -0.62). However, in playoffs, only stature and lean mass maintained these correlations (p ≤ 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The anthropometric and physical characteristics of the players showed few correlations with the game-related statistics in regular season, and these correlations are even lower in the playoff games of a professional elite Champion ship, wherefore, not being good predictors of technical performance.

Este estudo verificou o efeito agudo dos exercícios de flexibilidade estática (EFlex) no desempenho de força máxima (FM) e de resistência de força (RF) em membros inferiores e superiores. Treze voluntários participaram do estudo e foram submetidos a testes de FM e RF (70% 1RM) nos exercícios supino e agachamento precedidos ou não de EFlex. O teste T pareado foi utilizado para comparação das médias nas duas condições. Os EFlex diminuíram a FM no agachamento (141,2±34,2 vs 132±34,9kg; p=0,007) e no supino (77,5±21,7 vs 71,7±17,7kg p=0,04). A RF no agachamento não sofreu efeito dos EFlex (16,2±5,7 vs 16,3±6,8 repetições p=0,48), porém, no supino a RF apresentou diminuição significante (11,7±4,8 vs 9,9±5,1 repetições; p=0,008). Portanto, os EFlex reduziram a FM nos membros inferiores e superiores e a RF somente nos membros superiores. Essa diferença na RF estaria relacionada ao volume de exercícios de flexibilidade pelo tamanho do grupo muscular.

This study investigated the acute effect of static stretching exercises (SSE) on maximum strength (MS) and strength endurance (SE) performance in lower and upper limbs. Thirteen volunteers participated in the study and were submitted to MS and SE (70% 1RM) tests in the bench press and squat exercises with or without SSE. The paired T test showed that the SSE decreased MS in the squat (141.2±34.2 vs 132±34.9kg, p=0.007) and in the BP (77.5±21.7 vs 71.7±17.7kg p=0.04). Squat SE was not affected by SSE (16.2±5.7 vs 16.3±6.8 repetitions p=0.48). On the other hand, bench press SE decreased significantly after SSE (11.7±4.8 vs 9.9±5.1 repetitions p=0.008). Therefore, SSE impaired MS performance on upper and lower limbs but SE was affected only on upper limbs. This difference in SE may be related to the stretching exercises volume applied to the size of each muscle group.

INTRODUÇÃO: O aparecimento de resistência aos medicamentos é um dos maiores problemas do tratamento da malária. O uso de medicamentos falsos e/ou de má qualidade pode contribuir para o desenvolvimento de resistência no parasita. Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar a qualidade dos medicamentos antimaláricos distribuídos no Brasil. MÉTODOS: Amostras contendo comprimidos de difosfato de cloroquina, cloridrato de mefloquina, difosfato de primaquina e sulfato de quinina foram enviadas ao almoxarifado central na Cidade do Rio de Janeiro (CENADI), almoxarifados estaduais (SS) e Unidades Básicas de Saúde (UBS) nos estados da região norte do Brasil, totalizando dez amostras. Após cinco meses de armazenamento, as amostras foram coletadas e analisadas segundo métodos oficiais e da literatura. RESULTADOS: Foram encontradas condições inadequadas de armazenamento de medicamentos em duas SS e em todas as UBS avaliadas. Não foram encontrados problemas de qualidade com as amostras de cloroquina. As amostras de quinina apresentaram variação de peso acima dos limites permitidos. Amostras de primaquina foram encontradas com problemas na embalagem. A cedência de mefloquina de comprimidos, em algumas regiões, apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa quando comparada com a amostra do CENADI. CONCLUSÕES: É importante avaliar, periodicamente, a qualidade e as condições de armazenamento de medicamentos essenciais. Desvios de qualidade encontrados com as amostras de primaquina e quinina não estão relacionados às condições de armazenamento e devem ser corrigidos urgentemente. O decréscimo na cedência de mefloquina dos comprimidos está relacionado com a formulação ou foi influenciada por condições de armazenamento inadequadas, necessitando de uma investigação posterior. Apesar dos problemas mencionados, as amostras provavelmente não contribuiriam para a seleção de parasitas resistentes.

INTRODUCTION: The emergence of drug resistance is one of the main problems concerning malaria treatment. The use of counterfeit and/or substandard antimalarial drugs can contribute to the development of parasite resistance. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of antimalarial drugs distributed in Brazil. METHODS: Samples containing chloroquine phosphate, mefloquine hydrochloride, primaquine phosphate, and quinine sulfate tablets were delivered to the Rio de Janeiro central storeroom (CENADI), state storerooms (SS), and Basic Health Units (BHUs) in the north region of Brazil - a total of 10 sample sets. After 5 months of storage, the samples were collected, and in vitro quality control analyses according to official and published methods were performed. RESULTS: Inadequate drug storage conditions were found in two SS and in all BHUs evaluated. There were no quality deviations found in the chloroquine samples. The quinine samples exhibited weight variation above the allowed limits. The primaquine samples were found to have packaging deficiency. The release of mefloquine in samples from some regions showed a statistically significant difference when compared with the CENADI samples. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to periodically evaluate the quality and storage conditions of essential drugs. The quality deviations found with the primaquine and quinine samples are not related to storage conditions and must be addressed urgently. The decreased mefloquine release from tablets is related to formulation problems or influenced by inadequate storage conditions, prompting further investigation. Even with the mentioned problems, the samples would probably not contribute to resistant parasite selection.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de 12 semanas de treinamento nas qualidades físicas de dois grupos de crianças praticantes de futebol de campo da Vila Olímpica da Mangueira, ambos no estágio 3 de maturação biológica. As crianças foram submetidas a duas metodologias distintas durante a etapa de formação básica: a tradicional (grupo 1 - G1) e a maturacional (grupo 2 - G2). A amostra foi composta por 30 crianças do gênero masculino. Para a avaliação da Maturação Biológica foi utilizado o método de Tanner (1962). Para avaliação das qualidades físicas foram utilizados os seguintes protocolos: Coordenação (Teste de Coordenação de Burpee), Flexibilidade (Testes Angulares de Goniometria), Força dinâmica (Teste de Preensão Manual de Dinamometria), Força explosiva (Teste de Impulsão Vertical) e Velocidade (Teste de velocidade de 30 metros lançado). O procedimento estatístico utilizado foi o Teste-t de Student para amostras independentes e repetidas com um nível de significância de p £ 0,05. Quando se comparou o G1 com o G2 observaram-se os seguintes resultados do D% e do p-valor, respectivamente: coordenação (D% = 14,11%; p= 0,00), força dinâmica (D%= 3,01; p=0,49) e força explosiva (D%= 1,03; p=0,63), flexibilidade (D% = 4,39%; p= 0,00), resistência aeróbica (D% = 0,91%; p=0,00) e velocidade (D% = -0,96; p=0,00). Os resultados permitiram concluir que a utilização de uma metodologia levando em consideração a maturação biológica se mostrou mais eficiente no desenvolvimento de qualidades físicas de infantes no estágio 3 de maturação, praticantes de futebol de campo na Vila Olímpica da Mangueira.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences, found after 12 weeks of training, in the development of the physical qualities of two groups of children practicing soccer at Mangueira Olympic Center, Both groups were in the third stage of biological maturation, and were submitted to two different methodologies, during the stage of basic formation: the traditional and the maturational. The sample was composed by 30 male infants. For the evaluation of the biological maturation the board of pictures" by Tanner was used (1962), for the self evaluation protocol proposed by Matsudo & Matsudo (1991). For the evaluation of the physical qualities the following protocols were used: coordination (test of coordination of Burpee), flexibility (angular goniometric test), dynamic power (test of manual dynamometric pressure), explosive power (test of vertical impulse) and speed (speed test of 30 meters sprint). The statistic procedure used was the Student’s t-test and Student’s t-test (independent protocol for inter-groups analysis). The study established p≤0.05 to statistic significance. . When we compared G1 with G2 observed the results do D% and p-valor, respectively: coordination (D% = 2,91%; p= 0,00), dynamic power (D%= 3,01; p=0,49) and explosive power (D%= 1,03; p=0,63), flexibility (D% = 4,39%; p= 0,00), aerobic resistance (D% = 0,91%; p=0,00) and speed (D% = -0,96; p=0,00). The results allowed concluding that the experimental group, which used the maturational methodology, showed significant statistic differences in the variables coordination, flexibility, aerobic resistance and speed compared to the traditional group.
