Abstract Introduction and objective Emergence Delirium (ED), particularly in children, is characterized by mental confusion, irritability, disorientation, and inconsolable crying. ED prolongs the time required in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and increases concern and anxiety in parents. The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness and safety of low-dose clonidine in preventing ED in children receiving sevoflurane anesthesia for tonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy. Methods A randomized, double-blind clinical trial was conducted between November 2013 and January 2014. Sixty-two children aged 2-12 years, scheduled to undergo tonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy, and classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status I/II were included, with 29 being randomized to receive 1 µg.kg-1 clonidine intravenously, and 33 allocated to a control group that received no clonidine. Anesthesia was induced and maintained with sevoflurane. Children with altered state of consciousness, neurological deficit, history of allergy to dipyrone, or receiving other drugs such as preanesthetic agents were excluded from the study. The primary outcome was the presence of ED in the initial 20 minutes in the PACU according to the Pediatric Anesthesia Emergence Delirium (PAED) scale. The Chi-Square test and Fisher’s two-tailed exact test were used for statistical analysis, as applicable. Significance level was set at 5%, and Risk Ratios (RR) and their 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI) were calculated. Results The frequency of ED was significantly decreased in the group of children who received clonidine (17.2% vs. 57.6%; RR = 0.30; 95% CI 0.13-0.70; p= 0.001). There was no difference between groups with respect to the frequency of postoperative self-harm (falls and bruises), dislodged catheters, and for most of the other adverse events evaluated. Conclusions The use of 1 µg.kg-1 intravenous clonidine during anesthesia induction can effectively reduce the incidence of ED in children undergoing elective tonsillectomy/adenotonsillectomy under general inhalation anesthesia with sevoflurane. RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar um programa de controle da artrite encefalite caprina (AEC), por meio de testes diagnósticos sensíveis, separação de mãe e cria após o parto e medidas de manejo, com o intuito de formar rebanho livre do vírus. Utilizou-se um total de 47 cabritos da raça Saanen, mantidos isoladamente até o resultado dos primeiros testes de reação em cadeia de polimerase nested (PCR nested) e Western Blotting (WB), com base na coleta de sangue no momento do nascimento (M0). No PCR nested, quatro animais foram positivos, no M0, e foram eutanasiados. Posteriormente, os demais 43 cabritos foram submetidos à coleta de sangue aos 60 (M60) e 270 (M270) dias de vida para realização de novos testes de WB e PCR nested, que não detectaram animais positivos. Pode-se afirmar que a metodologia adotada neste estudo foi efetiva no controle da doença, nas fases de aleitamento e pós-aleitamento, e que a combinação do sistema de manejo, a fim de propiciar diminuição de risco de transmissão horizontal, com técnicas de diagnóstico mais apuradas, como o WB e a PCR nested, é relevante para elaboração de plano estratégico de controle da enfermidade.

ABSTRACT We aimed to evaluate a program to control Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis (CAE), using diagnostic tests, separation of the mother and postpartum and other management measures, in order to form a free flock of the virus. We used a total of 47 Saanengoats in isolation until the results of the first nested Polymerase Chain Reaction (nested PCR) and Western Blotting (WB) tests, based on blood collection at the time of birth (M0). In the nested PCR, 4 animals were positive, at M0, and were eliminated. Later, the other 43goats were submitted to blood collection at 60 (M60) and 270 (M270) days of life to perform new tests of WB and nested PCR, which did not detect positive animals. We can affirm that the methodology adopted in this study was effective in the control of the disease, in the phase of breastfeeding and post-breastfeeding, and that the combination of the management system, which allows a reduction of risk of horizontal transmission, with more accurate diagnostic techniques, such as WB and nested PCR, is relevant for the elaboration of a strategic plan for the disease control.

RESUMO Leopardus pardalis é uma das espécies de felinos neotropicais mais estudadas em seus aspectos ecológicos, porém informações de questões morfofisiológicas do trato digestório não são encontradas na literatura. Visando contribuir com tais informações, o objetivo deste artigo foi caracterizar a morfologia do estômago dessa espécie. Nesta pesquisa, foram utilizados cinco exemplares adultos, coletados após óbito por atropelamento ou doados pelo IBAMA ao Laboratório de Zoologia e Morfologia Animal da Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso - Alta Floresta. Os animais foram fixados com solução aquosa de formaldeído a 10%, dissecados por meio de técnicas anatômicas. Além dos estudos anatômicos, também foram coletados tecidos para microscopia. As análises macroscópicas revelaram que o estômago era do tipo unicavitário, com presença de pequena e grande curvatura, localizado no antímero esquerdo e constituído pelas regiões características do órgão. Em seus aspectos microscópicos, mostrou-se formado pelas quatro túnicas usuais do tubo digestório: túnica mucosa, submucosa, muscular e serosa, cada uma com as particularidades características de cada região, principalmente na túnica mucosa. O estômago de L. pardalis revelou uma morfologia semelhante às espécies domésticas e selvagens, com particularidades histomorfológicas na região pilórica. Esse padrão pode estar relacionado a adaptações evolutivas no processo digestivo dessa espécie.

ABSTRACT The species Leopardus pardalis is one of the species of neotropical felines more studied in its ecological aspects, however, information of morphophysiological questions of the digestive tract are not found in the literature. Aiming to contribute with such information, the objective of this work was to characterize the morphology of the stomach of this species. Five adult specimens, collected after death by trampling, or donated by IBAMA to the Laboratory of Zoology and Animal Morphology of the University of the State of Mato Grosso - Alta Floresta, were used in this research. The animals were fixed with aqueous solution of formaldehyde 10%, dissected through the basic techniques and instruments of anatomy, and later the material was collected for microscopy. The macroscopic analysis revealed that the stomach was of the unicavitary type, with small and great curvature, located in the left antimer and constituted by the characteristic regions of the organ. In its microscopic aspects it was formed by the four usual tunics of the digestive tube: tunica mucosa, submucosa, muscular and serosa, each one with the peculiarities characteristic of each region, mainly in the tunica mucosa. The stomach of L. pardalis revealed similar morphology to the domestic and wild species, with small histomorphological peculiarities in the pyloric region, which may be related to evolutionary adaptations in the digestive process of this species.

RESUMO Objetivou-se determinar a infusão de taxa contínua de tramadol associada à analgesia peri e pós-operatória para cirurgias ortopédicas em cães, além de efeitos cardiorrespiratórios e adversos. Foram utilizados 30 cães, com idade média de 4,2±1,2 anos e pesos médios de 15,1±0,9kg, pré-medicados por via intramuscular com acepromazina (0,04mg/kg) e tramadol (2mg/kg). A anestesia foi induzida com propofol e mantida com isoflurano em oxigênio. Foram comparadas três taxas de infusão, compreendendo três grupos experimentais: G2: 2,0mg/kg; G2,5: 2,5mg/kg1; e G3: 3,0mg/kg. A cirurgia começou 15 minutos após o início da infusão de tramadol. Durante a anestesia, os animais foram monitorados nos seguintes momentos: imediatamente após a intubação traqueal e o início da anestesia inalatória (T0); incisão cirúrgica (TSI); final de sutura (TFS) e final da infusão de tramadol (TEI), que foi mantida por, pelo menos, 120 minutos e prolongada de acordo com a duração da cirurgia. A analgesia pós-operatória foi avaliada por escalas de pontuação de dor, conforme a escala intervalar de avaliação de dor e a escala de contagem variável de avaliação de dor da Universidade de Melbourne, a cada uma hora. O tempo médio de infusão de tramadol foi maior que 120 minutos em todos os grupos, e não foram encontradas diferenças entre elas (141±27 minutos em G2, 137±27 minutos em G2,5 e 137±30 minutos em G3). A analgesia perioperatória foi adequada na maioria dos indivíduos e a pós-operatória foi considerada curta, não correlacionada àquelas com diferentes taxas de infusão. A infusão de tramadol nas taxas estudadas produziu analgesia adequada com estabilidade cardiorrespiratória. A analgesia não foi dose dependente, no entanto os efeitos residuais pós-operatórios foram considerados curtos, o que determina a necessidade de analgesia adequada após infusão contínua de tramadol. Estudos adicionais que utilizam taxas mais elevadas de infusão de tramadol e estimulação nociceptiva padrão são necessários para determinar em que medida as doses influenciam a analgesia de tramadol e se há um limite nos seus efeitos nos cães.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to determine the continuous rate infusion of tramadol associated with peri- and postoperative analgesia for orthopedic surgeries in dogs, as well as cardiorespiratory and adverse effects. Thirty dogs aged 4.2±1.2 years and weighing 15.1±0.9kg were enrolled in the study, premedicated intramuscularly with acepromazine (0.04mg kg-1) and tramadol (2mg kg-1); anesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane in oxygen. Three infusion rates were compared, comprising three experimental groups: G2: 2.0mg kg-1 h-1; G2.5: 2.5mg kg-1 h-1; and G3: 3.0mg kg-1 h-1. Surgery was initiated 15 minutes following the start of tramadol infusion. During anesthesia, animals were monitored in predefined time points: immediately after tracheal intubation and start of inhalation anesthesia (T0); surgical incision (TSI); final suture (TFS) and end of tramadol infusion (TEI), which was maintained for at least 120 minutes and prolonged according to the duration of surgery. Postoperative analgesia was evaluated through an interval pain scoring scale and the Melbourne pain scale. The mean time of tramadol infusion was greater than 120 minutes in all groups and no differences were found among them (141±27 minutes in G2, 137±27 minutes in G2.5 and 137±30 minutes in G3). Perioperative analgesia was regarded as short and did not correlate with infusion rates. Tramadol infusion provided adequate analgesia with cardiorespiratory stability Analgesia was not dose-dependent, however, and residual postoperative effects were short-lasting, which warrants proper postoperative analgesia following tramadol infusion. Additional studies are required using higher infusion rates and standardized nociceptive stimulation in order to determine how doses influence tramadol analgesia and whe therthereis a limit to its effect in dogs.

RESUMO: Avaliou-se neste trabalho o efeito da presença do capim-braquiarão (Urochloa brizantha) sobre o crescimento de cinco espécies arbóreas do bioma Mata Atlântica, em Seropédica-RJ. O estudo abrangeu cinco experimentos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Em cada experimento, testou-se em vasos o efeito da gramínea sobre o crescimento das espécies Cedrela fissilis, Guazuma ulmifolia, Schinus terebinthifolius, Sapindus saponaria e Hymenaea courbaril. Foram medidos mensalmente a altura, o diâmetro do coleto e a mortalidade das plantas. Aos 180 dias, avaliou-se também a massa seca de parte aérea e radicular das espécies arbóreas e da gramínea. Houve forte interferência do capim-braquiarão sobre o crescimento das cinco espécies estudadas. A redução de crescimento em altura e diâmetro do coleto chegou, respectivamente, a 32% e 29% em S. saponaria e a 26% e 44% em G. ulmifolia. A interferência da gramínea foi ainda maior sobre o acúmulo de massa seca, promovendo reduções na parte aérea que variaram de 48% em H. courbaril a 90% em G. ulmifolia e em S. terebinthifolius. A massa seca de raízes das espécies arbóreas reduziu entre 28% e 84% em relação ao controle sem a presença da gramínea. C. fissilis apresentou taxa de mortalidade de 83%, quando em convivência com U. brizantha. As demais espécies, à exceção de S. saponaria, também apresentaram mortalidade quando sob competição, variando de 15% a 30%. Este estudo evidencia a importância do controle de gramíneas em projetos de reflorestamento visando maiores ganhos em crescimento e sobrevivência das espécies arbóreas.

ABSTRACT: The effect of palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha) was evaluated on the growth of five tree species from the Atlantic Forest biome in Seropédica, RJ, Brasil. This study consisted of five experiments in a completely randomized design. The effect of grass on the growth of Cedrela fissilis, Guazuma ulmifolia, Schinus terebinthifolius, Sapindus saponaria, and Hymenaea courbaril was tested in pots at each experiment. Height, collar diameter, and plant mortality were measured monthly. Shoot and root dry matter of tree species and grass were evaluated at 180 days. A strong interference of palisade grass was observed on the growth of the five studied species. The reduction of growth in height and collar diameter reached 32 and 29% in S. saponaria and 26 and 44% in G. ulmifolia, respectively. Grass interference was even higher on dry matter accumulation, promoting reductions in the shoot that ranged from 48% in H. courbaril to 90% in G. ulmifolia and S. terebinthifolius. Root dry matter of tree species was reduced between 28 and 84% in relation to the control without the presence of grass. The species C. fissilis had a mortality rate of 83% in coexistence with U. brizantha. The other species, except S. saponaria, presented mortality from 15 to 30% under competition. This study evidences the importance of controlling grasses in reforestation projects aiming higher gains in growth and survival of tree species.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma investigação de Mycoplasma bovigenitalium e Ureaplasma diversum em bovinos leiteiros da microrregião do Vale do Ipanema, estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. Foram coletados suabes vaginais de 355 vacas em idade reprodutiva. As amostras foram analisadas por multiplex PCR (mPCR) e cultura. Foi realizada uma investigação dos fatores de risco para Mollicutes. Na mPCR, 9,29% (33/355) das vacas foram positivas para M. bovigenitalium e 21,69% (77/355) para U. diversum; coinfecção foi observada em 2,81% (10/355) das vacas. O isolamento microbiológico mostrou crescimento de Mycoplasma spp. em 81,81% (27/33) das amostras e em 24,67% (19/77) para Ureaplasma spp. Os fatores de risco relacionados à infecção por Mollicutes identificados foram sistema de produção semi-intensivo (OR= 4,6), aluguel de pastagem (OR= 3,6), não isolamento de animais com desordens reprodutivas (OR= 3,2) e monta natural e inseminação artificial (OR= 3,5). Houve uma associação significativa entre a infecção por Mollicutes e abortos no primeiro terço gestacional (P=0,001). Este é o primeiro relato da infecção por M. bovigenitalium e U. diversum em vacas na região semiárida do estado de Pernambuco, Brasil. As medidas preventivas direcionadas aos fatores de risco identificados podem diminuir a ocorrência de Mollicutes nesses rebanhos.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to conduct an investigation of Mycoplasma bovigenitalium and Ureaplasma diversum infections in cattle in the microregion of the Ipanema Valley, state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Vaginal swabs were collected from 355 breeding cows in reproductive age and were analyzed by multiplex PCR (mPCR) and culture. An epidemiological investigation of risk factors was performed for Mollicutes. mPCR analysis showed that, 9.29% (33/355) of the cows were positive for M. bovigenitalium and 21.69% (77/355) for U. diversum; coinfection was observed in 2.81% (10/355) of the cows. The microbiological isolation showed, 81.81% (27/33) of Mycoplasma spp. and 24.67% (19/77) of Ureaplasma spp.. The risk factors related to Mollicutes infection identified were semi-intensive breeding system (OR= 4.6), pasture rent (OR= 3.6), non-isolation of animals with reproductive disorders (OR= 3.2), and natural mounting and artificial insemination (OR= 3.5). There was a significant association between Mollicutes infection and abortions in the first gestational third (P= 0.001). This is the first record of M. bovigenitalium and U. diversum infection in cows in the semiarid region of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Preventive measures directed to the identified risk factors can decrease the occurrence of Mollicutes in these herds.

ABSTRACT Lapa do Santo rockshelter, a Paleoindian site located in Eastern-Central Brazil, presented two main occupations; one during Early Holocene (12,460 to 8700 cal BP), and a latter in Middle Holocene (5100 to 4200 cal BP). In spite of this 3600 year gap, the stratigraphy and general characteristics of the material culture did not indicate any visible discontinuity. This led us to hypothesise a reoccupation of the rockshelter by the same cultural group, tested by means of statistical analyses comparing lithics, bone artifacts, and faunal remains from early and middle Holocene layers. No significant differences were found, and our results indicate the presence of a cultural tradition that persisted for 8240 years, or roughly 412 generations.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a influência da somatotropina recombinante bovina (rbST) sobre a produção e os constituintes do leite de búfalas entre 63 e 154 dias em lactação. Foram utilizadas 22 búfalas, distribuídas em dois grupos experimentais: grupo rbST - aplicação de 500 mg de rbST a cada 14 dias; grupo controle - sem aplicação de rbST. A cada sete dias, foi aferida a produção de leite de todas as búfalas e coletada uma amostra para análise físico-química. As variáveis produtivas e as oriundas de análises laboratoriais foram avaliadas como medidas repetidas no tempo, utilizando-se o comando Repeated gerado pelo procedimento GLM do SAS. A média dos parâmetros estudados para os grupos rbST e controle foram, respectivamente: produção de leite - 6,54 vs. 6,68 kg; gordura - 6,31 vs. 6,34%; proteína 3,86 vs. 3,81%; lactose - 4,96 vs. 5,02%; sólidos totais - 16,05 vs. 16,03%; extrato seco desengordurado - 9,75 vs. 9,74%; contagem de células somáticas - 329,90 vs. 171,68 (x 1000/mL); e elecondutividade - 2,87 vs. 2,81mS/cm. A utilização de 500mg de rbST administrados quinzenalmente, entre 63 e 154 dias em lactação não alterou a produção de leite, a proporção dos constituintes e a CCS do leite de búfalas leiteiras.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbST) on milk yield and the proportion of buffalo milk components during lactation. Twenty-two buffaloes randomly distributed in two experimental groups were used: Group rbST - application of 500mg rbST every 14 days, between 63 and 154 days in milk (DIM); Control Group - without treatment. Weekly, the milk yield of buffaloes was measured and a sample was collected for physicochemical analysis. The response variables were evaluated as repeated measures, using the Repeated procedure through the GLM procedure of SAS. Means of each variable after rbST and Control were: Milk yield - 6,54 vs. 6,68 kg; Fat - 6,31 vs. 6,34%; Protein - 3,86 vs. 3,81%; Lactose - 4,96 vs. 5,02%; Milk solids - 16,05 vs. 16,03%; Defatted dry matter - 9,75 vs. 9,74%; Somatic Cells Count - 329,90 vs. 171,68 (x 1000/mL); and electrical conductivity- 2,87 vs. 2,81mS/cm. The use of 500mg of rbST administered every two weeks, between 63 and 154 DIM did not affect milk yield, proportion of milk constituents and SCC of dairy buffaloes.

RESUMO: Herbicidas são insumos com grande volume de utilização nos sistemas de produção agrícola para o manejo de plantas daninhas; no entanto, a contaminação ambiental causada é uma realidade. Objetivou-se com esta pesquisa avaliar a tolerância de espécies arbóreas fitorremediadoras de herbicidas no solo, aos herbicidas atrazine, clomazone e 2,4-D, através da avaliação de índices fotossintéticos. Dessa forma, um experimento em delineamento de blocos casualizados foi montado com quatro repetições, em esquema fatorial 4 x 5. O primeiro fator representou os herbicidas atrazine, clomazone e 2,4-D e o tratamento controle sem herbicida (água). O segundo fator consistiu no uso de espécies arbóreas pré-selecionadas para fitorremediação de solos com resíduos dos produtos [Eremanthus crotonoides DC. (candeia) - Richeria grandis Vahl (richéria), Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl) Marchand (breu-branco), Kielmeyera latrophyton Saddi, Kew Bull (pau-santo), Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess (landi)]. Os herbicidas foram aplicados em pratos de contenção sob os recipientes de cultivo das plantas, quando estas apresentavam oito meses de desenvolvimento. Quinze dias após o termino da aplicação dos herbicidas, foram avaliadas a intoxicação visual, condutância estomática (Gs), taxa de transpiração (E), concentração de CO2 na câmara subestomática (Ci), taxa fotossintética (A) e eficiência do uso da água (EUA). Os herbicidas afetaram de forma diferenciada as características fisiológicas das espécies arbóreas, sendo o atrazine o produto mais prejudicial. Indivíduos sob efeito de 2,4-D e clomazone apresentaram menor variação para as características fisiológicas, comparados às respectivas testemunhas. O breu-branco, apesar de mostrar baixa intoxicação visual proporcionada pelos herbicidas, foi a espécie mais afetada pelos produtos. De maneira contrária, a candeia foi a espécie mais tolerante à ação dos herbicidas.

ABSTRACT: Herbicides are inputs with a high volume of use in agricultural production systems for weed management; however, the environmental contamination they cause is a reality. The objective of this research was to evaluate the tolerance of tree species used for the phytoremediation of herbicides in the soil, to atrazine, clomazone and 2,4-D, through the evaluation of photosynthetic indices. Thus, a randomized block design experiment was conducted with four replications, in a 4 x 5 factorial arrangement, where the first factor represented the herbicides atrazine, clomazone and 2,4-D and the control treatment without herbicide (water). The second factor consisted in the use of pre-selected tree species for the phytoremediation of soils with residues of the products [Eremanthus crotonoides DC. (candeia), - Richeria grandis Vahl (richeria), Protium heptaphyllum (Aubl) Marchand, (breu-branco) Kielmeyera latrophyton Saddi, Kew Bull, (pau-santo) Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess (guanandi)]. The herbicides were applied through dishes placed under the culture containers of the plants, when they presented eight months of development. After 15 days from the herbicide application, the visual intoxication, stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (E), CO2 concentration in the substomatal chamber (Ci), and water use efficiency (WUE) were evaluated. The herbicides affected differently the physiological characteristics of the tree species; atrazine was the most harmful product. Individuals under the effect of 2,4-D and clomazone presented lower variation for their physiological characteristics, compared to the respective control treatments. Breu-branco, despite showing low visual intoxication provided by the herbicides, was the most affected species by the products. On the other hand, candeia was the most tolerant species to the action of the herbicides.

RESUMO O Brasil atualmente é detentor do terceiro maior rebanho de vacas leiteiras do mundo, composto, em sua maioria, de animais mestiços F1 (Gir X Holandês), os quais são bem adaptados às áreas tropicais. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar a eficiência da ovum pick-up (OPU) e da produção in vitro de embriões oriundos de doadoras Girolando com sêmen sexado de touros provenientes de duas raças, Gir e Holandesa. Foram utilizados dados referentes a 232 animais de diversos rebanhos, totalizando 4334 oócitos recuperados. Os oócitos foram classificados, e as estruturas viáveis (GI, GII e GIII) foram utilizadas para produção in vitro de embriões (PIVE). Foi observada uma média de oócitos recuperados para as doadoras F1 de 18,14±1,33. Além disso, notou-se que não houve diferença entre os dois cruzamentos utilizados, considerando média de total de embriões (4,96±0,40 e 6,56±0,76) para o cruzamento F1 X HPB (Holandês preto e branco) e F1 X Gir, respectivamente. Portanto, as doadoras F1 apresentaram potencial como doadoras de oócitos no sistema de produção in vitro de embriões, independentemente da raça do touro cujo sêmen foi utilizado.

ABSTRACT Brazil currently has the third largest herd of dairy cattle in the world, composed mainly by F1 crossbreed animals (Gyr x Holstein), which are well adapted to tropical areas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of Girolando donors in OPU and in vitro production of embryos (IVEP) using sexed semen of bulls from two breeds, Gyr and Holstein. We used data from 232 animals coming from different herds and the total of recovered oocytes was 4334. The oocytes were classified according to their viability and the viable ones (GI, GII and GIII) were used for IVP. The average of oocyte recovery from F1 donors was 18.14±1.33. There was no difference on the average of embryos considering the crossing F1 X Holstein (4.96±0.40) and F1 X Gyr (6.56±0.76). In conclusion, F1 donors showed a potential for being oocyte donors in the system of in vitro production of embryos, regardless the breed of the bull.

Corn snack industry has empirically found that big and abundant blisters are developed when cornstarch is highly gelatinized, because of milling processes. This defect affects mainly the texture and appearance of the snacks. In the present study, gelatinization enthalpy by DSC was measured in grits, corn meals and nixtamalized corn flours, and correlated with Water Absorption Index (WAI) and Water Soluble Index (WSI), to generate an enthalpy prediction model. Results indicated that the more intense the process of milling was (lower particle diameter), the lower the gelatinization enthalpy values were. Grits presented a gelatinization enthalpy mean of 8.05 ± 1.22 J/g, corn meals of 5.33 ± 1.87 J/g and nixtamalized corn flours ranged between 2.35 y 3.28 J/g. The gelatinization enthalpy was significantly correlated with WAI and WSI (-0.847 y -0.763, respectively). A predictive model was successfully generated to predict gelatinization enthalpy in grits, corn meals and flours.

En la industria de las botanas de maíz se ha observado que se obtienen productos con grandes y numerosas burbujas cuando el almidón esta muy gelatinizado a causa de los procesos de molienda, lo que genera textura y apariencia indeseable de los productos. En el presente estudio se midió la entalpia de gelatinización por calorimetría diferencial de barrido (DSC) en sémolas, granillos y harinas de maíz nixtamalizado y se correlación con los índices de absorción de agua (WAI) y de sólidos solubles en agua (WSI) para elaborar un modelo de predicción de entalpía. Los resultados indican que mientras más intenso fue el proceso de molienda (menor tamaño de partícula) más bajos fueron los valores promedio de entalpía de gelatinización, 8.05 ± 1.22 J/g para sémolas, 5.333 ± 1.87 J/g para granillos y finalmente, las harinas de maíz nixtamalizado presentaron valores entre 2.35 y 3.28 J/g. La entalpía de gelatinización presentó correlaciones significativas de -0.847 y -0.763 con WAI y WSI, respectivamente. Se estableció un modelo de predicción de entalpía para granillos, sémolas y harinas.

Contagens bacterianas de 179 amostras de leite cru refrigerado, provenientes de diferentes bacias leiteiras de Minas Gerais, foram realizadas pelos métodos de citometria de fluxo e contagem padrão em placas. O estudo das associações entre a contagem bacteriana total e as contagens bacterianas dos diferentes grupos de micro-organismos foi realizado pela correlação de Pearson. Houve uma forte correlação positiva e significativa entre os valores de contagem de psicrotróficos (r = 0,67) e mesófilos (r = 0,70), determinados pelo método de referência, e os valores da contagem bacteriana total, determinados pela citometria de fluxo. Foi possível estabelecer uma curva de calibração para o citômetro de fluxo utilizando equações de regressão linear. As equações para a contagem bacteriana obtida por citometria de fluxo em função da contagem de mesófilos e psicrotróficos foram: log (CBI) = 0,701 log mesófilos + 1,9091 e log (CBI) = 0,4703 log psicrotróficos + 3,2784, respectivamente. Não foi possível estabelecer curvas de calibrações para termófilos e termodúricos, pois as correlações obtidas entre as contagens desses micro-organismos e a contagem bacteriana total, determinada por citometria de fluxo, foram fracas (r = 0,30 e 0,27, respectivamente).

Total Bacterial count was performed in 179 raw milk samples from different dairy farms in Minas Gerais State, Brazil, through flow cytometry and standard plate count, that was regarded as the reference method. There was significant strong correlation between the values of psychrotrophic and mesophilic counts determined by the reference method with the values of bacterial count determined by flow cytometry (r = 0.67 and 0.70, respectively), which allowed to establish linear regression equations for bacterial count to calibrate the flow cytometry and estimate the count of mesophilic (log bacterial individual count (BIC) by flow cytometry = 0.701 log mesophilic + 1.9091) and psychrotrophic (log BIC by flow cytometry = 0.4703 log psychrotrophic + 3.2784) bacteria. It was not possible to establish calibration curves for thermophiles and thermodurics due to the weak to moderate correlation coefficients found among these microorganism counts and total bacterial count determined by flow cytometry (r = 0.30 and 0.27, respectively).

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a fitossociologia de plantas daninhas em cafezais sob diferentes períodos de consórcio com leguminosas em dois anos de cultivo. Os tratamentos corresponderam à combinação fatorial entre as leguminosas feijão-de-porco (Canavalia ensiformis) e lablabe (Dolichos lab-lab) e períodos de consorciação com cafeeiros aos 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias após o plantio, mais uma testemunha sem leguminosa. O experimento foi composto por nove tratamentos em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. As leguminosas foram semeadas em dezembro de 2007 e outubro de 2008 e cortadas conforme os períodos de consorciação, sendo removidas da entrelinha, para ficarem sob a copa dos cafeeiros. As plantas daninhas foram amostradas nas entrelinhas e na projeção das copas dos cafeeiros, em outubro de 2008 e em outubro de 2009, refletindo o efeito dos tratamentos após um e dois anos de consorciação, respectivamente. As avaliações constaram da similaridade da comunidade, do índice do valor de importância e da importância relativa das plantas daninhas mais frequentes. Nos dois anos agrícolas foram identificadas 17 espécies de plantas daninhas, distribuídas em dez famílias botânicas, sendo mais frequentes as espécies Cyperus rotundus, Paspalum conjugatum, Amaranthus retroflexus e Oxalis latifolia. No primeiro ano, o feijão-de-porco (2,65 t ha-1) produziu mais massa que a lablabe (1,89 t ha-1), e no segundo ano a lablabe produziu mais massa (4,21 t ha-1) que o feijão-de-porco (2,73 t ha‑1). Nas entrelinhas, a diferença da flora de plantas daninhas em relação à testemunha foi maior do que na projeção da copa dos cafeeiros, no final dos dois anos. Em 2008, quando a lablabe ficou por 90 ou 120 dias nas entrelinhas, houve crescimento da importância da tiririca, enquanto em 2009 a importância relativa desta foi mais elevada na testemunha. As entrelinhas do cafeeiro apresentaram massa de matéria seca de plantas daninhas maior do que a projeção da copa, possivelmente devido ao sombreamento proporcionado pelos cafeeiros. A espécie Cyperus rotundus foi a de maior importância nos dois anos, seguida de Paspalum conjugatum, que teve sua importância aumentada de 2008 para 2009, devido à sua adaptação às condições de baixa luminosidade.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the phytosociology of weeds in a coffee plantation under different periods of legume intercropping, along two years. The experiment consisted of nine treatments in a randomized block design with four replications. Treatments were the factorial combination of Jack beans (Canavalia ensiformis) or Hyacinth beans (Dolichos lab-lab) and four periods of intercropping with coffee (30, 60, 90, and 120 days after planting), plus a control treatment with no legume. The legumes were sown in December 2007 and October 2008, cut according to the periods of intercropping, and placed under the coffee plant canopies. Weeds were sampled on the coffee plant inter-rows and canopies, in October 2008, and October 2009, reflecting the effect of treatments after one and two years of cultivation, respectively. The evaluations consisted of the weed community indices, the species' importance value and the relative importance of the most frequent weed species. In both years, seventeen species of weeds, distributed in ten botanical families, were identified, with the most frequent species being Cyperus rotundus, Paspalum conjugatum, Amaranthus retroflexus and Oxalis latifolia. In the first-year, Jack beans (2.65 t ha-1) accumulated more mass than Hyacinth beans (1.89 t ha-1), but in the second year, the Hyacinth beans accumulated more mass (4.21 t ha-1) than the Jack beans (2.73 t ha-1). At the end of the two years, the weed flora in the control plot was more similar to the flora under the canopy than on the inter-row flora. In 2008, when Hyacinth beans were intercropped for 90 or 120 days, the relative importance of C. rotundus in the inter-row was higher than in the control.On the other hand, in the second year, the relative importance of this weed was higher in the control plots, and in 2009, the relative importance of this weed was higher in the control. The weed mass in the inter-row was higher than under the coffee plant canopy, possibly due to the shading provided by the trees. C. rotundus was the most important species in both years, followed by Paspalum conjugatum, whose importance increased from 2008 to 2009, possibly due to its adaptation to low light conditions.

Embora métodos tradicionais sejam utilizados na avaliação microbiológica de produtos UAT, metodologias rápidas, baseadas em ATP-Bioluminescência, têm sido desenvolvidas. Os resultados da aplicação dessa técnica em 54 amostras de bebida láctea UAT achocolatada e 12 de creme de leite UAT foram comparados com os resultados de métodos microbiológicos, utilizando-se diferentes meios de cultura e tempos de incubação das referidas amostras. A técnica de ATP-Bioluminescência foi aplicada por meio do sistema MLS, e os resultados foram expressos em unidades relativas de luz (RLU). Em todos os tempos de incubação - 48, 72 e 168 horas - , as amostras apresentaram contagens baixas de microrganismos mesófilos e psicrotróficos aeróbios quando analisadas em meio PCA, BHI, PetrifilmTM AC e por ATP-Bioluminescência (<150 RLU), demonstrando alta especificidade da técnica. Apenas uma amostra de creme de leite UAT apresentou contagem de mesófilos aeróbios acima do padrão estabelecido pela legislação brasileira (<100 UFC/mL) quando analisada em meio PCA (260 UFC/mL) e PetrifilmTM AC (108 UFC/mL), no tempo de 168 horas. Essa alta contagem de microrganismos mesófilos aeróbios também foi detectada pela técnica de ATP-Bioluminescência (416 RLU). Os resultados da técnica de ATP-Bioluminescência foram iguais aos resultados em meio PCA, BHI e PetrifilmTM AC.

Although traditional methods are used for the microbiological evaluation of UHT products, rapid methodologies based on ATP-Bioluminescence have been developed. The results of applying this technique in 54 samples of chocolate UHT milk drink and 12 of UHT milk cream were compared with the results of microbiological methods, using different culture media and incubation times for the referred samples. The ATP-Bioluminescence technique was applied through the MLS system and the results were expressed as relative light units (RLU). In all incubation times - 48, 72, and 168 hours - , the samples showed lower counts of mesophilic and psychrotrophic aerobic microorganisms when analyzed using PCA, BHI, PetrifilmTM AC and ATP-Bioluminescence (<150RLU), demonstrating the technique's high specificity. Only one sample of UHT milk cream showed a mesophilic aerobic count above the standard established by Brazilian legislation (<100CFU/mL) when analyzed in PCA (260 CFU/mL) and PetrifilmTM AC (108CFU/mL) at 168 hours. This high count of aerobic mesophilic microorganisms was also detected by the ATP-Bioluminescence (416 RLU) technique. The results of the ATP-Bioluminescence technique were equal to the results in PCA, BHI and PetrifilmTM AC.

O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito imediato de diferentes pesos de mochila na postura corporal e avaliar a confiabilidade dessas medidas. Foram avaliados 50 escolares com idades entre oito e 14 anos. Os escolares foram fotografados no plano coronal anterior e sagital, com diferentes cargas relativas ao peso: sem mochila, com o peso habitualmente utilizado, com 10% do peso corporal (PC), 15 % do PC e 20% do PC. Para comparar os ângulos de assimetria da cabeça, de ombros, pélvica, do trocanter, dos joelhos, maleolar, corporal, sagital da cabeça, sagital dos ombros e sagital corporal foi utilizada a Análise de Variância para Medidas Repetidas e o Teste de Friedman. A confiabilidade foi analisada por meio do Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse (ICC). Foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas no ângulo sagital cervical (p < .00), no ângulo sagital corporal (p < .00) e no ângulo sagital dos ombros (p < .01) com o aumento da carga. Também obteve-se alta confiabilidade inter-avaliador (ICC entre .83 a .99) para todos os ângulos avaliados nas diferentes posturas (p < .05). Este estudo não sustenta a recomendação de que o peso da mochila não deve exceder 10% do PC, já que cargas inferiores também ocasionaram anteriorização da cabeça e do corpo.

The aim of this study was to analyze the acute effect of different weights of backpack on body posture and assess the reliability of these measures. Were evaluated 50 students aged between eight and 14 years old. The students were photographed in the coronal and sagittal planes with different backpack loads: no backpack, the weight commonly used, with 10%, 15% and 20% of body weight. To compare the angles of asymmetry of the head, shoulders, pelvis, trochanter, knee, malleolus, body, sagittal head, shoulder sagittal and sagittal body was used ANOVA for repeated measures and the Friedman test. Reliability was analyzed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Statistically significant difference were observed in the sagittal angle of the head (p < .00), in the sagittal body angle (p < .00) and the sagittal angle of the shoulders (p < .01) with increasing load. The data shows high inter-rater reliability (ICC > .83) for all angles measured in different postures (p < .05). This study does not support the recommendation that the weight of the backpack should not exceed 10% of body weight since smaller loads also caused anterior displacement of the head and body.
