Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

The present work evaluated the effect on charge transfer in functionalized TiO2 nanostructured systems using different binders. We highlight the conditions required to form self-assembled systems by varying the number of layers, as well as by substituting them for an organic binder, cysteine. Additionally, we study the pH effect of the precursor solution (HAuCl4) on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) formation. The morphological characterization allowed us to determine the percentage of Au atoms on the surface of the synthesized nanoparticles. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis determined the amount of gold deposited on the TiO2 surface, which ranged from 4.56 to 253.00 ng mm-2 depending on the system used. Based on Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman analysis, it was possible to propose a photolysis mechanism for AuNP formation in accordance with the change in the binders. The different systems were subjected to hydrogen photogeneration by a water splitting process, resulting in 2.02 µmol cm-2 of hydrogen production for cysteine binder [Cys+HAuCl4-2.7]. There proved to be an excellent synergy between the morphological aspects, crystallinity, and stability of this arrangement.

ABSTRACT: Rabies affects several domestic species, causing significant economic losses due to the death of animals in characteristic areas of the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. In this context, this work aimed to study the epidemiology of rabies outbreaks observed in cattle from January 2008 to December 2017, through its space and time distribution in the southern region of Rio Grande do Sul. We performed an observational and ecological retrospective through the analysis of data recorded in necropsy protocols performed in cattle at the “Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico” of the “Universidade Federal de Pelotas” (LRD-UFPel). A descriptive data analysis aimed at evaluating the distribution of cases over time. The statistical analysis was performed with Gretl statistical software 1.9.12 (GNU Regression, Econometric, and Time-series Library). To the existence of stationarity was verified with the Dickey-Fuller test, considering a value of p<0.05. From January 2008 to December 2017, 1418 bovine diagnostic materials were received at the LRD-UFPel, and 160 outbreaks of rabies were confirmed in 160 farms located in the 24 municipalities of the LRD-UFPel area of influence. We observed 591 cattle out of a total of 25,886 infected with the virus. We conclude that rabies does not exhibit seasonality in the study region, with a tendency to decrease in frequency in the next years. The disease has an epidemic characteristic in most of the analyzed months (2012-2014), remaining endemic in the remaining period (2011, 2015 and 2016) with sporadic episodes of epidemics in these years. We also observed that as the incidence of the disease increased in the animals and in the properties, there was a geographical spread of the virus for the majority (54.16%) of the municipalities in the area of influence of the LRD-UFPel.

Objective: To compare results of positron emission tomography (PET) with carbon-11-labeled Pittsburgh compound B (11C-PIB) obtained with cerebellar or global brain uptake for voxel intensity normalization, describe the cortical sites with highest tracer uptake in subjects with mild Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and explore possible group differences in 11C-PIB binding to white matter. Methods: 11C-PIB PET scans were acquired from subjects with AD (n=17) and healthy elderly controls (n=19). Voxel-based analysis was performed with statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Results: Cerebellar normalization showed higher 11C-PIB uptake in the AD group relative to controls throughout the cerebral cortex, involving the lateral temporal, orbitofrontal, and superior parietal cortices. With global uptake normalization, greatest cortical binding was detected in the orbitofrontal cortex; decreased 11C-PIB uptake in white matter was found in the posterior hippocampal region, corpus callosum, pons, and internal capsule. Conclusion: The present case-control voxelwise 11C-PIB PET comparison highlighted the regional distribution of amyloid deposition in the cerebral cortex of mildly demented AD patients. Tracer uptake was highest in the orbitofrontal cortex. Decreased 11C-PIB uptake in white-matter regions in this patient population may be a marker of white-matter damage in AD.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the production performance of Nile tilapia post-larvae and fingerlings fed with increasing levels of alcoholic extract of propolis into diets. In Experiment 1, 1800 post-larvae were distributed in 30 tanks, in a completely randomized design with five treatments composed by the inclusion of 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 g of dry propolis/kg of feed, and six replicates. In experiment 2, 1600 fingerlings were distributed in the same system and designed as experiment 1. No significant effect was observed between treatments, for final weight, total and standard length, survival, and intestinal villus height. However, the propolis extract inclusion of 1 g/kg in Nile tilapia post-larvae and fingerlings’ feed resulted in a better body condition factor and higher body protein deposition (p<0.05). The condition factor is an estimate for the future growth of the animals, possibly the fish treated with propolis extract will present better growth, survival and greater reproductive potential rates. The results of the present study demonstrate that alcoholic extract of propolis improves the nutritional condition of Nile tilapia post-larvae and fingerlings, potentially leading to increased productivity in subsequent stages, as well as leading to improvement in fingerlings muscle deposition.

ABSTRACT It is in the Web environment that museums are making much of the information about their collection accessible in digital form. However, this information is being made available in an unstructured form. It hampers the exchange of data, communication and interoperability between museum systems that require suitable metadata standards to manage and provide information linked to their collections. The research question is: how can metadata standards contribute to art museums? The research presents a qualitative approach is theoretical character of descriptive and exploratory level. The result of the analysis showed that the metadata standards are not being used in Brazilian art museums, and there are not even national literature for dealing with this issue. However, in some countries is used some standards for the museological universe, of which the VRA Core version 4.0, which for cataloging works of art in the digital environment seems to be the most appropriate.

Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Screening Test foram utilizadas para avaliação. As variáveis identificadas (feto doador, baixa renda econômica e doença cárdio-respiratória) influenciaram negativamente a comunicação expressiva e as habilidades motoras finas.
ABSTRACT Objective To assess the neurodevelopmental functions of survivors of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) treated by fetoscopic laser coagulation (FLC), during the first year of life, comparing them to a control group; and to verify the influence of specific variables on neurodevelopment. Method This was a prospective, longitudinal study. The sample comprised 33 monochorionic diamniotic twins who underwent FLC for treatment of TTTS and 22 full-term infants of single-fetus pregnancies. Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development Screening Test were used for evaluation. Prenatal, perinatal and postnatal information were obtained. Results There was an increased frequency of infants in the TTTS group with inadequate performance compared to the control group. The identified variables (fetal donor, low economic income and cardiorespiratory disease) negatively impacted expressive communication and fine motor skills. Conclusion Although through follow-up is recommended in all TTTS survivors, particular attention is required for the high-risk group as defined in this study.

Fifty intact ovine males were randomly selected, 25 of the Santa Inês breed and 25 F1 Santa Inês x Dorper, to evaluate the dental chronology, live weight at slaughter, withers height, hip height, body length and thoracic circumference. After exsanguination, temperature and pH were measured at different times (4h; 12h and 24h) in the Semitendinosus and Triceps brachii muscles, as well as the shear force (48h) of Semitendinosus muscle. In parallel, the correlations between sensory analysis and instrumental analysis values for these muscles were assessed. The mean temperatures of the carcasses were 26.80°C and -0.20°C, respectively. The mean initial pH of Semitendinosus was 6.62 (4h) and the final was 5.64 (24h), whereas the initial pH for the Triceps brachii was 6.50 (4h) and the final, 5.68 (24h). Semitendinosus muscle shear force was similar for lambs of Santa Inês breed and F1 Dorper x Santa Inês breed, demonstrating that the genetic group did not affected meat tenderness. The sensory panel confirmed the instrumental analysis results. When different genetic groups were compared, a high inversed correlation between the instrumental analysis (shear force) and the sensory analysis was obtained (r = -0.87). The mean for body length and thoracic circumference levels did not show a significant difference for different genetic groups.

ABSTRACT Cabossous tatouay Desmarest, 1804 is considered a rare species in southern South America, and Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, records of the species are scarce and inaccurate. This study reports 40 localities for C. tatouay, and provides a map of the species' potential distribution using ecological niche modeling (ENM). The ENM indicated that in this region C. tatouay is associated with open grasslands, including the areas of "Pampas" and the open fields in the highlands of the Atlantic Forest. This study contributes to the information about the greater naked-tailed armadillo in southern Brazil, and provides data key to its future conservation.

Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

This study aims to prepare biodegradable films from cassava starch, poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT), and montmorillonite (MMT) using blow-extrusion process and analyze the effects of different types and concentrations of MMT on the microstructure, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of the resulting films. The films were produced by blending 30% of PBAT with glycerol (17.5%), starch (49.0-52.5%), and four different types of montmorillonite (Cloisite® Na+, 10A, 15A, and 30B) at two different concentrations (1.75% and 3.5%). All the films prepared in this study showed an increase in the basal spacing of MMT layers. In particular, the films with 10A and 30B showed the highest increase in intercalation basal spacing, suggesting the formation of intercalated composites. The addition of nanoclays decreased the elongation of films. The addition of Cloisite® 10A resulted in films with the lowest WVP values and the highest stability to water adsorption under different RH conditions.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the root and aerial growth of cultivars and hybrids of pearl millet in soil under four levels of soil compaction. Seven hybrids of pearl millet - Pennisetum glaucum L. (40425, 40853, 41312, 51499, 60018, 60019 and ADR7010) and ADR300 and ADR500 varieties were used. At 30 days after planting, the dry mass of shoots and roots, root length density and root mean diameter was determined. In the density of 1.74 Mg m-3 varieties and hybrids of pearl millet showed a high reduction of green matter, dry mass of shoots, plant height and leaf area. Hybrids 40853 and 60019 produced less than other hybrids and cultivars in the production of green and dry matter of shoots and plant height in the density of 1.65 Mg m-3. The ADR500 and ADR300 varieties and hybrids 40425 and 51499 excelled in the production of green and dry mass and plant height in the density of 1.65 kg m-3. The highest mean root length density among the cultivars of millet was found at a density of 1.46 Mg m-3. The millet crop showed potential for descompaction of soil.
