Abstract This study aims to identify the individual community strategies to avoid violence exposure most used by adolescents from public and private schools in the IX Administrative Region of Rio de Janeiro and investigate the profile of co-occurrence and its prevalence in specific population subgroups. This is a cross-sectional study with 693 individuals. A multidimensional questionnaire collected information regarding strategies to avoid community violence exposure and was self-completed in the classroom. The most used strategies were avoiding walking close to armed people (55.5%), avoiding walking alone (30.5%), and avoiding returning home at dawn (24.7%). Girls adopt more of all (concurrently) the four limiting behaviors to reduce their community violence exposure (53% vs. 32%). Notably, the adoption of such strategies differed by socioeconomic indicators and was higher among adolescents from lower-income households. These findings point to the high frequency of use of such strategies by adolescents, which may hinder and limit the full development of their social and cultural skills.

Abstract Aim: To evaluate the chronic effects of resistance training on resting blood pressure, handgrip strength, gait speed, and Timed Up and Go test (TUG) in normotensive and hypertensive elderly individuals. Methods: Experimental study based on TREND. Hypertensive patients were diagnosed by an independent doctor. Before and after 12 weeks of progressive resistance training, we evaluated blood pressure, heart rate, body composition, Timed Up and Go test, gait speed, and handgrip strength. Results: Sample consisted of 41 participants divided into two groups (normotensive n = 28; hypertensive n = 13). We observed significant values in the reduction of blood pressure levels only in the group of hypertensive participants. In functionality outcomes, we observed significant values in all tests and both groups. Outcomes contemplate effect sizes ranging from small to moderate. Conclusion: Progressive resistance training lowers resting blood pressure levels, increases handgrip strength, and improves physical functional performance. Although the normotensive group did not show a reduction in blood pressure levels, an improvement was observed in the functional physical tests.

Resumo Este estudo tem como objetivos estimar a prevalência de Experiências Adversas na Infância (EAI), investigar o seu perfil de coocorrência e sua distribuição de acordo com características individuais, familiares, socioeconômicas e escolares de adolescentes de escolas públicas e privadas de uma Região Administrativa do Rio de Janeiro. Trata-se de um estudo seccional com 681 indivíduos, selecionados através de amostragem aleatória complexa. As EAI foram identificadas através do questionário QUESI e perguntas diretas. Estimou-se as prevalências e a correlação entre pares das EAI e o perfil de coocorrência das EAI. Os resultados revelaram que abuso e negligência emocionais e dissolução da família biparental foram as adversidades mais comuns. Setenta por cento da amostra sofreu pelo menos uma EAI e 9%, quatro ou mais. Cerca de 20% vivenciou abuso e negligência e 9% a coocorrência de abuso, negligência e ausência de pelo menos um genitor durante a infância. Os subgrupos mais vulneráveis foram: meninas, filhos de mães adolescentes, os que não moravam com ambos os pais, os de escola pública e os de baixa renda. As altas prevalências e o perfil de coocorrência das adversidades sugerem que as políticas voltadas à prevenção e ao acolhimento de vítimas sejam abrangentes e multissetoriais.

The most vulnerable subgroups were girls and respondents who were born to teenage mothers, not living with both parents, studying at public schools, and from low-income families. The high prevalence and co-occurrence profile of ACE reveals the need for wide-ranging intersectoral policies designed to prevent adverse childhood experiences and provide victim support.

Resumen Objetivo. Evaluar la relación entre el estado nutricional y los hábitos alimentarios de los niños de cinco a diez años y sus respectivas madres, las cuales residen en zonas rurales. Métodos. Se trató de un estudio transversal realizado con 156 niños de cinco a diez años, registrados en las Estrategias de Salud de la Familia del área rural del municipio de Divinópolis-MG (Brasil) de julio de 2017 a abril de 2018. Resultados. La prevalencia de sobrepeso fue del 27.5%. Se asoció significativamente con el sobrepeso de los niños: la circunferencia de la cintura materna (OR=1.04), el consumo de proteínas (OR=1.02), el consumo irregular de jugo natural (OR=5.05) y el nivel socioeconómico más favorecido, estrato social C1 (OR=3.54). En cuanto a la correlación entre la ingesta de nutrientes de los niños y la de sus madres, la mayoría de las correlaciones fueron débiles o moderadas, siendo estadísticamente significativas para todos los componentes dietéticos evaluados (r=0.185 a 0.496). Conclusión. El estado nutricional de la madre se relacionó con el sobrepeso del niño y se observó una correlación de débil a moderada para la ingesta de nutrientes entre los niños y sus madres. Se identificó una alta prevalencia de niños con sobrepeso en las zonas rurales. Los resultados apuntan a la necesidad de implementar enfoques colectivos, dirigidos a familias del medio rural, para prevenir este problema.

Abstract Objective. To assess the relationship between the nutritional status and eating habits of children aged from five to ten years old and their mothers, living in rural areas. Methods. A cross-sectional study conducted with 156 children aged from five to ten years old, registered in the Family Health Strategies of the rural area of the Municipality of Divinópolis-MG (Brazil) from July 2017 to April 2018. Results. The prevalence of excess weight was 27.5%. The following parameters were significantly associated with excess weight in the children: maternal waist circumference (OR=1.04), protein consumption (OR=1.02), irregular consumption of natural juice (OR=5.05), and the most favored socioeconomic level, C1 social stratum (OR=3.54). Regarding the correlation between nutrient intake of the children and their mothers, most of the correlations were weak to moderate, being statistically significant for all the dietary components evaluated (r=0.185 to 0.496). Conclusion. Maternal nutritional status was related to the child's excess weight and a weak to moderate correlation was observed for nutrient intake among the children and their mothers. A high prevalence of children with excess weight was observed in the rural areas. The results point to the need to implement collective approaches, targeted at rural families, so as to prevent this problem.

Resumo Objetivo. Avaliar a relação entre estado nutricional e hábitos alimentares de crianças de cinco a dez anos e de suas respectivas mães, residentes em zona rural. Métodos. Estudo transversal, realizado com 156 crianças de cinco a dez anos, cadastradas nas Estratégias de Saúde da Família da zona rural do município de Divinópolis-MG (Brasil), de julho de 2017 a abril de 2018. Resultados. A prevalência de excesso de peso foi 27.5%. Associou-se significativamente ao excesso de peso das crianças: a circunferência de cintura materna (OR=1.04), o consumo de proteína (OR:1.02), o consumo irregular de suco natural (OR=5.05); o nível socioeconômico mais favorecido, estrato social C1 (OR=3.54). No que diz respeito à correlação entre o consumo de nutrientes das crianças e suas mães, a maioria das correlações foi de fraca a moderada, sendo significativas estatisticamente para todos os componentes dietéticos avaliados (r=0.185 a 0.496). Conclusão. O estado nutricional materno relacionou-se ao excesso de peso da criança e observou-se correlação fraca-moderada para ingestão de nutrientes entre as crianças e suas mães. Foi identificada elevada prevalência de excesso de peso infantil na zona rural. Os resultados apontam a necessidade de implementação de abordagens de ordem coletiva, voltadas às famílias de áreas rurais, para prevenção desse agravo.

RESUMO O uso de telefones celulares aumentou dramaticamente em todo o mundo. Essa revolução na comunicação entre os indivíduos tem impacto no cuidado ao paciente, apoiando sua autogestão e promovendo a responsabilidade compartilhada com os serviços de saúde. Tendo em vista que a melhoria da comunicação facilita o cumprimento dos procedimentos programados e reduz os cancelamentos cirúrgicos, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo desenvolver uma ferramenta de comunicação denominada Surgery Remember@ para mitigar as suspensões cirúrgicas por absenteísmo do paciente. O presente artigo é um estudo da produção tecnológica dividido em quatro capítulos: revisão de literatura; análise do perfil administrativo do hospital; desenvolvimento de software; e mapeamento de processos para implementação de software. Tendo em conta que nos últimos três anos o problema do absenteísmo foi a principal causa de cancelamentos cirúrgicos institucionais o desenvolvimento do Surgery Remember@ se apresenta como esforço para reduzir os cancelamentos de cirurgias, melhorando a eficiência e reduzindo custos. Sabe-se que o envio de mensagens três dias antes do procedimento cirúrgico possibilita a reposição de pacientes em caso de cancelamentos, otimizando os recursos humanos e materiais da sala cirúrgica. A confirmação da consulta pré-anestésica também é positiva, pois permite verificar a melhora da assistência perioperatória. Assim, além de viável e de fácil implementação, o software desenvolvido permite agregar outros recursos de acordo com a necessidade do usuário, mostrando-se uma ferramenta para redução de cancelamentos cirúrgicos.

ABSTRACT The use of mobile phones has dramatically increased all over the world. Such revolution in the communication amongst individuals has a great impact in patient care, supporting their self-management and promoting shared responsibility with health services. Given that improved communication facilitates compliance with scheduled procedures and reduces surgical cancellations, the current work aims to develop a communication tool named Surgery Remember@ to mitigate surgical suspensions due to patient absenteeism. The present article is a study of technological production divided into four chapters: literature review; analysis of the hospital administrative profile; software development; and process mapping for software implementation. Taking into account that in the last three years the problem of absenteeism was the main cause of institutional surgical cancellations; the development of Surgery Remember@ endeavours to reduce surgery cancellations, improving efficiency and reducing costs. It is known that sending messages three days before the surgical procedure makes it possible to replace patients in the event of cancellations, optimizing the human and material resources in the operating room. The confirmation of the pre-aesthetic consultation is also positive, for it allows the verification of perioperative assistance improvement. Hence, besides being viable and easy to implement, the software developed allows the addition of other features based on user requirements, proving to be an asset to reduce surgery cancellations.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To estimate the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. METHODS: A population-based household survey was performed, from July 27, 2020 to August 8, 2020. The estimates considered clustering, stratification and non-response. Qualitative detection of IgM and IgG antibodies was performed in a fully-automated Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay on the Cobas® e601 analyzer (Roche Diagnostics). RESULTS: In total, 3,156 individuals were interviewed. Seroprevalence of total antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was 40.4% (95%CI 35.6-45.3). Population adherence to non-pharmaceutical interventions was higher at the beginning of the pandemic than in the last month. SARS-CoV-2 infection rates were significantly lower among mask wearers and among those who maintained social and physical distancing in the last month compared to their counterparts. Among the infected, 26.0% were asymptomatic. The infection fatality rate (IFR) was 0.14%, higher for men and older adults. The IFR based on excess deaths was 0.28%. The ratio of estimated infections to reported cases was 22.2. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 estimated in this population-based survey is one of the highest reported. The local herd immunity threshold may have been reached or might be reached soon.

Abstract INTRODUCTION: The number of syphilis cases among pregnant women in Brazil has increased. This study aimed to analyze the temporal trend of syphilis indicators among pregnant women in Northeast Brazil. METHODS: A time-series study was performed. RESULTS: We observed an increase in the detection rate of syphilis among pregnant women, those aged 15-19 years, and those of brown ethnicity. A strong correlation was observed between the detection rate of syphilis and family health strategy coverage. CONCLUSIONS: Despite an increase in primary care coverage, The increase in cases of syphilis among pregnant women is still considered a challenge.

Method: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study involving fifty-nine older adults from the quilombola community of Curiaú, Macapá-Amapá. A sociodemographic form was used to characterize the sample, and Lawton’s and Herth’s Hope Scales were used to measuring functional capacity and life expectancy, respectively. In the relationship study, the Spearman correlation test was applied. Results: Elderly males aged 60-69 years (52.5%) and married (35.6%) prevailed. Functional capacity had a mean score of 22.4 (± 4.6) and a life expectancy of 41.5 (± 5.1), the correlation between the scale scores was positive and significant (R = 0.475; p <0.001). Conclusion: From the results concluded, when related levels of independence and life expectancy among themselves were significantly associated with being functionally independent elderly and having a better life expectancy.

Método: Estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo, transversal, envolviendo 59 ancianos de la comunidad de cimarrones de Curiaú, Macapá (Amapá). Han sido utilizados formulario sociodemográfico para caracterización de la muestra bien como la Escala de Lawton y la Escala de Esperanza de Herth, para medición de la capacidad funcional y esperanza de vida, respectivamente. En el estudio de relación, ha sido aplicado el Test de Correlación Spearman. Resultados: Prevalecieron ancianos del sexo masculino, entre 60 y 69 años (52,5%) y casados (35,6%). La capacidad funcional tuvo escore medio total de 22,4 (±4,6); y la esperanza de vida, de 41,5 (±5,1); la correlação entre los escores de las escalas han sido positiva y significativa (R = 0,475; p < 0,001). Conclusión: A partir de los resultados, cuando relacionados niveles de independencia y esperanza de vida entre sí, hubo asociación significativa entre ser anciano funcionalmente independiente y tener mejor esperanza de vida.

Conclusión: A partir de los resultados, cuando relacionados niveles de independencia y esperanza de vida entre sí, hubo asociación significativa entre ser anciano funcionalmente independiente y tener mejor esperanza de vida.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of the extract of Aloe vera at concentrations of 10% and 20% on the cryopreservation of sperm from the epididymis of domestic cats. Epididymal spermatozoa were recovered using the flotation technique and used in the treatments: control (TRIS-egg yolk at 20%), T10% (TRIS plus 10% of A. vera extract), and T20% (TRIS plus 20% of A. vera extract). The spermatozoa were subjected to 4ºC for 60 minutes, followed by 20 minutes in nitrogen vapors, and stored in a cryogenic cylinder. The samples were thawed at 37°C for 30 seconds. The sperm motility decreased (P<0.05) after thawing in the three treatments. Only the spermatozoa in the control treatment maintained post-thawing vigor. The viability of spermatozoa decreased in the treatments with A. vera (P<0.05). According to the hypoosmotic test, all treatments maintained the sperm membrane functionality (P>0.05) during freezing; however, after thawing, it decreased (P<0.05) in the T10% and T20% treatments. The morphology and chromatin condensation of spermatozoa did not differ, regardless of the treatments and time of evaluation (P>0.05). The effect of the crude A. vera extract was not satisfactory on the cryopreservation of epididymal spermatozoa of domestic cats after thawing; although the motility of spermatozoa was similar to that found with the use of egg yolk, and it presented maintenance of the chromatin integrity. However, it is necessary to understand the action of the substances present in A. vera with the feline spermatozoa, well as the standardization and adjustment of physicochemical characteristics aiming at the future application of the vegetal extract.

Abstract We evaluated the genetic variability of a collection of Jatropha curcas germplasm, represented by 93 accessions, using microsatellite markers. Among the 60 markers tested, five of them detected polymorphisms, with a total of 11 alleles and mean of 2.2 alleles per loci. These five markers enabled the quantification of genetic variability through estimates of expected (He=0.42) and observed (Ho=0.64) heterozygosity, Shannon-Weaver index (H'=0.62), coefficient of inbreeding (ƒ=-0.44) and the formation of 11 clusters. Simultaneously, 14 accessions randomly sampled among the 93 and represented by seven plants each, were analyzed with these same five markers to quantify the within and between variability. Most of the genetic variation (92.58%) was contained within the accessions. These analyses revealed, for the first time, expressive genetic variability to be explored in this collection. The accessions UFVJC 05, 07, 12, 18, and 53 presented expressive variability among them with potential for the constitution of a base population for the breeding program.

Resumo: A prevalência de nascimento pré-termo tem apresentado uma tendência crescente em vários países, inclusive naqueles desenvolvidos. Estudos no Brasil relatam que o Sistema de Informações sobre Nascidos Vivos (SINASC), até 2010, subestimava a prevalência de nascimentos pré-termo, quando comparada aos estudos baseados em dados primários. A partir de 2011, a idade gestacional ao nascer no SINASC tem sido calculada, quando disponível, pela data da última menstruação (DUM). O objetivo foi avaliar a acurácia da determinação da idade gestacional gerada pela DUM, comparando com a de outros estimadores, e correlacioná-la com o peso ao nascer. Estudo de base populacional com dados do SINASC disponíveis no Departamento de Informática do SUS entre 2011 e 2015. As definições de prematuridade, baixo peso e asfixia ao nascer foram aquelas determinadas na literatura. A adequação do peso ao nascer com a idade gestacional foi calculada baseando-se nas curvas de Fenton e Intergrowth-21. Compararam-se as médias de peso pela presença ou não de prematuridade. A estimação da idade gestacional foi realizada pela DUM em 58,5%, e 41,5% utilizaram outro método. Encontrou-se que a proporção de prematuridade foi de 12% no grupo DUM e 8,4% no grupo outro método, já o baixo peso ao nascer foi de 6,5% e 8,4%, respectivamente. A média de peso dos prematuros no grupo DUM foi maior. O uso da DUM como estimador da idade gestacional superestimou a proporção de peso maior ou igual a 2.500g nos prematuros, o que não parece compatível com a distribuição esperada para esta faixa. A DUM favoreceu a “correção” da prematuridade para os parâmetros comparáveis aos de estudos com dados primários, embora as distorções encontradas entre idade gestacional e peso ao nascer possam indicar que ainda existem problemas com este estimador.

Abstract: The prevalence of preterm births has shown a growing trend in many countries, including developed ones. Studies in Brazil have shown that the Information System on Live Births (SINASC, in Portuguese), until 2010, underestimated the prevalence of preterm births, when compared with studies based on primary data. Starting in 2011, gestational age at birth has been calculated in SINASC according to the last menstrual period (LMP), when available. This study sought to evaluate the accuracy of the gestational age assessment using LMP, compared with two other estimates, and correlate it with birth weight. This is a population study with data from SINASC available from Brazilian Health Informatics Department between 2011 and 2015. Definitions of preterm birth, low birth weight and birth asphyxia were taken from the literature. Adequacy of birth weigh to gestational age was calculated based on Fenton and Intergrowth-21 curves. We compared weight means according to the presence or lack of preterm birth. gestational age assessment was based on LMP in 58.5% and 41.5% used another method. We found that the preterm proportion was 12% in the LMP group and 8.4% in the other method group, while low birth weight was 6.5% and 8.4%, respectively. Mean weight of preterm infants was higher in the LMP group. Use of LMP as a gestational age estimator overestimated the proportion of weight equal to or higher than 2,500g among preterm infants, which does not seem compatible with the expected distribution for this group. LMP favored “correction” of prematurity for the parameters that are comparable to those of primary data studies, though the distortions we found between gestational age and birth weigh may indicate that there are still problems with this estimator.

Resumen: La prevalencia de nacimiento pretérmino está presentando una tendencia creciente en varios países, incluso en los desarrollados. Estudios en Brasil reflejan que el Sistema de Información sobre Nacidos Vivos (SINASC), hasta 2010, subestimaba la prevalencia de nacimientos pretérmino, cuando se compara con los estudios basados en datos primarios. A partir de 2011, la edad gestacional al nacer ha sido calculada en el SINASC, cuando se encontraba disponible, mediante la fecha de la última menstruación (DUM). El objetivo fue evaluar la precisión en la determinación de la edad gestacional generada por los DUM, comparándola con la de otros estimadores, y correlacionándola con el peso al nacer. Se trata de un estudio de base poblacional con datos del SINASC, disponibles en el Departamiento de Informática del Sistema Único de Salud entre 2011 y 2015. Las definiciones de prematuridad, bajo peso y asfixia al nacer fueron aquellas determinadas en la literatura. La adecuación del peso al nacer con la edad gestacional se calculó basándose en las curvas de Fenton e Intergrowth-21. Se compararon las medias de peso por la presencia o no de prematuridad. La estimación de la edade gestacional se realizó mediante DUM en un 58,5%, y un 41,5% utilizaron otro método. Se descubrió que la proporción de prematuridad fue de un 12% en el grupo DUM y un 8,4% en el grupo otro método, ya que el bajo peso al nacer fue un 6,5% y 8,4%, respectivamente. La media de peso de los prematuros en el grupo DUM fue mayor. El uso de la DUM, como estimador de la edad gestacional, sobreestimó la proporción de peso mayor o igual a 2.500g en los prematuros, lo que no parece compatible con la distribución esperada para esta franja.
