This study describes a single step, high yield and purity, ecofriendly and scalable procedure to prepare a selenium derivative (diethyl selenodiglycolate). Diethyl selenodiglycolate rapidly reduces hypochlorous acid (HOCl, second-order rate constant of 7 × 107 M−1 s−1) to generate its corresponding selenoxide. In activated HL-60 cells, diethyl selenodiglycolate selectively reacted with HOCl (half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 23.07 µM) but not with superoxide anion radical or hydrogen peroxide without any cytotoxicity. These results show that this synthetically simple selenide reacts in a very efficient and specific way with the harmful pro-oxidant HOCl being a promising compound to be applied in oxidative inflammatory-related conditions.

<p>Enzymatic kinetic resolution (EKR) of (±)-cyanohydrins was performed by using immobilized lipase from <italic>Candida antarctica</italic> (CALB) under conventional ordinary conditions (orbital shaking) and under microwave radiation (MW). The use of microwave radiation contributed very expressively on the reduction of the reaction time from 24 to 2 h. Most importantly, high selectivity (up to 92% <italic>ee</italic>_p) as well as conversion was achieved under MW radiation (50-56%).</p>

Tellurium(IV) tetrachloride, p-methoxyphenyltellurium trichloride and the corresponding products of its reaction with alkynes were prepared under very mild reaction conditions, in absence of organic solvents and in short reaction times all assisted by microwave irradiation.

Uma série de aldeídos, alquinóis e benzilaminas foram submetidos a reação, por catálise mediada por CuCl, na formação de hidróxi-benzilaminas funcionalizadas. O procedimento permite a utilização de aldeídos alquílicos e arílicos. Substratos representativos foram convertidos em alcalóides cíclicos de cinco e seis membros através da reação concomitante de N-debenzilação e redução total da ligação tripla promovida por Pd, seguido de ciclização tipo Mitsunobu.

A number of aldehydes, alkynols and benzylamines were submitted to A3-coupling reaction, under CuCl catalysis, giving strategically functionalized hydroxy-propargylamines. The procedure allows the use of alkyl as well as aryl aldehydes. Representative substrates were converted into fiveand six-membered cyclic alkaloids by sequential one-pot N-debenzylation/triple bond reduction promoted by Pd, followed by a Mitsunobu-type cyclization.

A range of hydroxypropargylpiperidones were efficiently obtained by a one-pot three-component coupling reaction of aldehydes, alkynols, and a primary amine equivalent (4-piperidone hydrochloride hydrate) in ethyl acetate using copper(I) chloride as a catalyst. The developed protocol proved to be equally efficient using a range of aliphatic aldehydes, including paraformaldehyde, and using protected and unprotected alkynols.

Neste artigo é revisada a preparação de organometálicos reativos a partir de teluretos orgânicos. É comentado o uso dos organometálicos preparados dessa maneira na síntese de substâncias bioativas.

In this paper the preparation of reactive organometallics starting from organotellurides is reviewed. The application of the reactive organometallics prepared in this way in the synthesis of bioactive compounds is commented.

Foi desenvolvido um procedimento eficiente e ecologicamente amigável para a promoção da ciclização de Prins em ausência de solventes orgânicos baseado na maceração de um aldeído e um álcool alílico em presença de quantidade catalítica de p-TSA disperso em sílica gel. Por esse procedimento foram sintetizadas as fragrâncias comerciais Florol® e Clarycet®, em uma e duas etapas sintéticas respectivamente.

An efficient, green and solvent-free catalysed Prins-cyclization reaction based on the simple grinding of an aldehyde and a homoallylic alcohol in the presence of catalytic amount of p-TSA on silica gel is reported. By this protocol were synthesized tetrahydropyran odorants including commercial Florol® and Clarycet®, in one and two steps respectively.

Foi desenvolvido um procedimento para tetrahidropiranilação de álcoois e tióis em ausência de solvente orgânico, baseado na simples mistura dos reagentes, na presença de sílica gel e quantidade catalítica de p-TSA.

A solvent-free procedure for tetrahydropyranylation of alcohols and thiols based on a simple grinding of the reagents in the presence of silica gel and catalytic amounts of p-TSA is described.

No período de janeiro de 2000 a dezembro de 2003 foram colhidas, em várias regiões geográficas do Estado do Paraná, 550 amostras fecais de crianças e adultos com quadro clínico de diarréia aguda. Por meio de ensaio imunoenzimático comercial, 120 (21,8%) amostras foram positivas para o rotavírus grupo A. Dessas, 114 amostras foram genotipadas por meio da multiplex-nested-PCR. A maior freqüência (77,5%) de amostras positivas (n=93) foi observada em crianças menores de cinco anos de idade. A maior concentração de casos positivos para o rotavírus ocorreu nos meses frios e secos dos quatro anos avaliados. Os genotipos de maior ocorrência foram: G1 (50,9%), G4 (9,6%), G9 (7,0%), G2 (1,7%), G3 (0,9%), P[ 8] (71,9%) e P[ 4] (3,5%). P[ 8] G1 (46,5%) e P[ 8] G4 (9,6%) foram as associações de genotipos P e G mais encontradas. Infecções mistas, caracterizadas por estirpes de rotavírus com mais de um genotipo G, P e amostras não-genotipadas foram observadas, respectivamente, em 8,8, 3,5 e em 16,7% das amostras. De forma semelhante ao que vem ocorrendo em várias partes do mundo a identificação do genotipo G9 em estirpes de rotavírus identificadas ao longo dos quatro anos do estudo ratifica a emergência desse genotipo também no Estado do Paraná, Brasil.

From January/2000 to December/2003, 550 diarrheic fecal samples from the children and adults were collected in several geographical regions of Paraná State, Brazil. The enzyme immunoassay showed 120 (21.8%) samples positive for the group A rotaviruses. One hundred and fourteen samples were genotyped by multiplex-nested-PCR assay. The highest frequency (77.5%) of the positive samples (n=93) was observed in the children under 5 years old. Rotavirus diarrhea was more frequent in the cold and dry seasons of the four evaluated years. The most frequent genotypes were: G1 (50.9%), G4 (9.6%), G9 (7.0%), G2 (1.7%), G3 (0.9%), P[ 8] (71.9%), and P[ 4] (3.5%). The P[ 8] G1 (46.5%) and P[ 8] G4 (9.6%) were the main combinations found to P and G genotypes. The mixed infections, characterized by the rotaviruses with more than one genotype G or P, and nontypeable rotavirus were observed in 8.8, 3.5, and 16.7% of the samples, respectively. The identification of the G9 genotype in the rotavirus strains tested along the four years of studies ratifies the emergency of this genotype also in Paraná State, South region of Brazil, as the worldwide.

Cianocupratos de ordem superior e homoenolatos de lítio secundários, foram eficientemente gerados a partir de beta-butil teluro cetais e submetidos a reação com benzaldeido e 2-cicloexen-1-ona.

Secondary higher order cyanocuprates and lithium homoenolates, were efficiently generated from beta-butyltellanylketals and reacted with benzaldehyde and 2-cyclohexen-1-one.

O composto (S)-2-metil-4-octanol (1) é produzido especificamente pelos machos da broca da cana-de-açúcar Sphenophorus levis, e sua atividade biológica está aparentemente associada ao comportamento de agregação da espécie. Desenvolveu-se neste trabalho uma nova metodologia sintética para a preparação deste composto, utilizando-se o D-manitol (2) como material de partida, tendo-se o (R)-gliceraldeído acetonídeo (4) como intermediário chave. Através de análises cromatográficas de um acetil derivado do produto final, empregando-se colunas quirais, estabeleceu-se um excesso enantiomérico de 99,5%. O composto (1) já foi previamente identificado como componente do feromônio de agregação de uma grande variedade de espécies de curculionídeos.

(S)-2-Methyl-4-octanol (1) is a male-specific compound released by the sugarcane weevil Sphenophorus levis, being its biological activity associated with the aggregation behaviour of the species. Continuing our studies on the chemical ecology of this species, this work describes an expeditious synthesis of alcohol (1), starting from the easily available D-mannitol (2), in a route that employ the known (R)-glyceraldehyde acetonide (4) as key intermediate. GC analysis of an acetyl derivative of the final product, using a chiral stationary phase column, revealed an enantiomeric excess of 99.5%. Compound (1) has been identified as component of the male-produced aggregation pheromone in several curculionid species.

A introdução de um grupamento equivalente ao ânion carboximetil a enonas e nitroalquenos através da reação de adição 1,4 do cianocuprato da 2,4,4-trimetil-2-oxazolina 3, resulta numa metodologia interessante para a síntese de produtos naturais como (±)-metil jasmonato (1) e (±)-baclofen (2).

Introduction of a synthon equivalent to a carboxymethyl anion to enones and nitroalkenes, through a 1,4-addition reaction of 2,4,4-trimethyl-2-oxazoline cyanocuprate 3, proved to be an interesting methodology for the synthesis of natural products such as (±)-methyl jasmonate (1) and (±)-baclofen (2).

Os compostos utilizados pelo percevejo da soja Piezodorus guildinii como feromônio de alarme foram caracterizados através da análise da composição química das secreções da glândula metatorácica dos insetos adultos. Além dos hidrocarbonetos característicos, (E)-2-hexenal e (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal foram detectados como constituintes majoritários. Tais compostos já foram previamente descritos como feromônio de alarme em outras espécies de pentatomídeos.

The compounds utilized by the soybean stink bug Piezodorus guildinii as alarm pheromone were characterized by analysis of the chemical composition of the metathoracic scent gland secretions from adult bugs. In addition to characteristic hydrocarbons, (E)-2-hexenal and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal were detected as major constituents. These compounds were previously described as alarm pheromone in several other pentatomid species.

In this article we describe the construction of two cooling systems with an immersion probe which will allow one to work at temperatures of either -40ºC or -60ºC. The two systems were constructed with readily available components and have been used daily for the last year in our laboratory to carry out reactions at low temperature or to cool down traps of vacuum pumps, reducing our need of dry-ice or liquid nitrogen.
