Abstract In the Valles Altos of Mexico, the use of corn (Zea mays L. ) for pozole and the genetic improvement of pozolero corn have focused on using varieties of the races Ancho and Cacahuazintle, locally accepted and adapted to the region, and for this region, the productive response potential of other pozolero varieties originating from other regions of the country is unknown. The objective of this study was to evaluate grain yield and other agronomic variables of 12 varieties of pozolero corn of the Elotes Occidentales race, collected in Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Mexico, in 2018, along with a local variety of ancho corn and another of Cacahuazintle as controls, in order to identify the varieties with outstanding characteristics among the germplasms evaluated and with respect to the commercial controls. The 14 materials were evaluated in three sites of the municipality of Texcoco, State of México, under a randomized complete block design with three repetitions. Significant differences were found for yield between varieties and controls. The varieties yielded from 6.5 to 8.2 t ha-1 and the controls from 3.1 to 7.9 t ha-1. The best varieties of ‘Elotes Occidentales’ exceeded the yield of the control Cacahuazintle by 4 t ha-1 and the control Ancho by 1.5 t ha-1 and the genotypes EOM-1 and EOM-6 were the ones that showed an average yield greater than 8 t ha-1. It was also found that these varieties showed the best characteristics in terms of agronomic behavior and adaptation to the environment for yield (YIE), ear length (EL), number of grains per row (GR) and number of days to male (MF) and female flowering (FF) compared to the commercial pozolero controls Maíz Ancho and Cacahuazintle, with the EOM-1 population having the highest yield with 8.6 t ha-1. The weight of 200 seeds (W200S), plant height (PH) and ear height (EH) were found in the ranges of commercial controls with averages of 2.5 m, 1.6 m and 130 g, respectively. Contrary to the number of rows, the evaluated populations presented a greater number compared to the controls, with the populations EOM-4, EOM-5 and EOM-8 being the most outstanding with 10 rows per ear.

Abstract The yield and nutritional value of forage and silage of native corns with forage potential in subtropical conditions were evaluated. The variables evaluated were yield (t ha-1) of total dry matter (TDM) and by component: leaf blade (LB), stem, bracts, green corn cob, panicle and sheath, SPAD units, leaf area index (LAI) and specific leaf area (SLA, cm2 g-1). In forage and silage, the contents (%) of crude protein (CP), ashes (AS), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were evaluated. The variables were analyzed with a randomized complete block design with three repetitions and the Tukey mean comparison test was applied (α= 0.05). The Tuxpeño Norteño × Ratón genotype had the highest values (p< 0.05) of TDM, LB and stem (10.66, 1.89 and 3.97 t ha-1, respectively), NDF (57.4%) and ADF (26.6%). While the V-402 genotype had the highest yield of green corn cobs (4.2 t ha-1). The CP content in silage was higher (p< 0.05) than in forage (8.2 and 7.8%, respectively). The Ratón × Tuxpeño genotype had the highest CP content in forage (8.6%), in contrast, Tuxpeño Norteño × Elotes Occidentales showed the highest CP content (8.7%) in silage. The Tuxpeño Norteño × Ratón genotype could be an alternative as forage due to the higher yield of total dry matter and nutritional value, desirable characteristics in forage corns.

ABSTRACT Introduction: postoperative nausea and vomiting is a troublesome side effect after spinal anesthesia, increases the need for perioperative care and is associated with more postoperative morbidity. Objective: to determine the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia in elective surgery. Methods: an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, descriptive study was performed in 502 patients from January 2017 to December 2018. The variables sex, age, smoking, history of motion sickness and nausea (or both) and postoperative vomiting, anesthetic agents used, use of postoperative opioids, type of surgery according to diagnosis, hospital stay and approach to the surgical site, surgical time and occurrence of nausea and vomiting in the first 24 hours postoperatively were evaluated. Results: the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was 10.16% with a predominance in the female sex, non-smokers, those with a history of postoperative nausea and vomiting and motion sickness (or both), in gynecological surgery, in patients with surgical time equal to or greater than one hour and when postoperative opioids were used. Age, anesthetic agents used for spinal anesthesia, approach to the surgical site, and hospital stay were not associated with an increased incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Conclusions: the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting was low and the higher number of risk factors was associated with higher occurrence of nausea and vomiting.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Summary Mexico has an ample, unexploited genetic variability in maize (Zea mays L.). Maize breeding programs in the highlands have mainly used varieties of the local races Conico and Chalqueño, with little or no use of exotic materials from other regions. In this study, grain yield of four Tuxpeño maize populations was evaluated as a criterion for adaptation to the highlands. The populations were assessed in their Cycle 1 (unadapted) and Cycle 7 (adapted) versions, along with the H-S2, Promesa, and San José hybrids as controls. The evaluation was carried out at the Experimental stations at Index words: Zea mays, adaptation, exotic germplasm, Tuxpeño race, yield. Colegio de Postgraduados and INIFAP in Texcoco, State of Mexico. In both locations, randomized complete blocks designs with three replications were used. Male and female flowering, plant and ear height, ear length, ear diameter, number of rows, kernels per row, and grain yield were recorded. Results showed significant changes in grain yield and its components in the advanced selection C7 (5.5 to 7.9 t ha-1), compared to C1 (1.5 to 2.2 t ha-1). Yield components with significant favorable changes were ear length and diameter, number of rows, and kernels per row. Cycle 7 populations outperformed up to five times those of the initial cycle; however, it did not match the yield of 11.4 t ha-1 of the control hybrids. Tuxpeño C7 maize populations can be considered as exotic tropical varieties adapted to highlands, as they showed yields of 5 to 7 t ha-1. Furthermore, they provide valuable novel genetic variation that could be used to improve local maize or used per se as new varieties.

Abstract Suction caissons are used to fix submarine systems of production into the seafloor for exploding hydrocarbons. The foundations of submarine systems are subjected to combined or multiaxial loading, which consists in applying combinations of horizontal and vertical loading (H,V) with driving moments (M). The main objective of this research work was to estimate numerically the combined capacity by means of failure envelopes of a suction pile installed in normally consolidated soil and subjected to combined loading applied at the head. The failure envelope represents the boundary of the combination of loading that the pile-soil can withstand. Finite element program ANSYS® 14.5 was used to model the caisson-soil system and evaluate the capacity of the caissons subjected to 17 combinations of HM failure loading and 22 linked values of VM maximum loading. Each numerical result permit to conform failure surfaces, which for the HM capacity exhibit rotated elliptical shapes with clear symmetry, while failure envelopes of the MV plane exhibit thong-shape failure and are clearly non-symmetrical. In this research, the pure compressional capacity was 72% higher than the pure extensional capacity. The mechanisms of failure of the caissons loaded at the head meet very well with the modes reported in the oil industry. Caissons subjected to horizontal loading in positive convention (applied from left to right direction) and clockwise moment exhibited “external-scoop” mechanisms, while caisson under positive lateral loading and counter-clockwise moments might experience translational or rotational failure mechanisms. Finally, this research work permits to quantify the impact of the variation of the mechanical properties of the soil on the caisson capacity as well as the type and size of the failure modes of the foundation.

Abstract Dry matter production (DM) and morphological composition were evaluated according to regrowth age (RA; four, six, and eight weeks) and prairie height (PH) in Pennisetum ciliare cv. H-17, during rainy season (RS) and drought (DS). The variables were total MS (TDM), leaf (LDM), stem (SDM), dead material (DMDM) and PH. A completely randomized design with four repetitions and linear regression analysis was used. During RS, the TDM was similar (p > 0.05) between RA (8342 kg ha-1) and decreased 90% in DS. During RS, there was greater (p < 0.05) LDM at four weeks, while at eight there was greater SDM and DMDM. The SDM and DDM were manifested when the PH was 34 cm and 47 cm, respectively. The RA and PH had a significant effect on the performance and structural behavior of DM in Pennisetum ciliare cv. H-17.

ABSTRACT One of the different genetic mechanisms involved in the carcinogenesis of meningiomas is influenced by interactions between proteins that induce and inhibit apoptosis. Objective To evaluate the expression of c-FLIP, XIAP, Bcl-2, caspase 3, 8 and 9, cytochrome c, APAF 1 and Smac/DIABLO genes related to apoptosis pathways. Methods The gene expression was evaluated in 30 meningiomas (WHO grades I and II) and in 10 normal samples (from arachnoid tissue) through PCR-RT. Results The results showed higher expression of anti-apoptotic genes in meningiomas when compared to the control group, which had a low expression of pro-apoptotic genes. Conclusion There is a possible block in the activation of caspases through the intrinsic apoptosis pathway in meningiomas. c-FLIP modulates caspase 8 and, by inhibiting its activation due to the lack of connection with the receiver, there is a block to the FAS activation of apoptosis by its extrinsic pathway.

Abstract This work aimed to evaluate the agronomic behavior of maize (Zea mays L.) Tuxpeño adapted to High valleys. Four populations of Tuxpeño corn were evaluated in their versions of cycle one (misfit) and cycle seven (adapted): P1(C1), P1(C7); P2(C1), P2(C7); P3(C1), P3(C7), and P4(C1), P4(C7); four crosses of Chalqueño compounds 1, 2, 3, and 4 by P4 (C10), three crosses of populations P1, P2, and P3 by P4 (C10); and three witnesses: H-S2, Promesa and San Jose. The evaluation was done in the spring-summer cycle of 2013, in fields of the College of Postgraduates and the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research, Texcoco, State of Mexico, under a randomized complete block design with three replicates. The experimental plot had 26 mats of two plants each 50 cm in two rows of 6 m separated to 0.8 m. The grain yield of the materials and other agronomic characteristics were measured. The results indicated that exotic adapted populations yielded up to 6 t ha-1, significantly exceeding the original varieties, although they had a late vegetative cycle and were of lower height. Performance components had significant increases in populations; the crosses of Tuxpeño*Chalqueño yielded from 13 to 14 t ha-1, surpassing the commercial hybrids, San Jose and H-S2. This shows the existence of heterosis in the crosses and that tropical exotic corn adapted in High Valleys is a useful resource for genetic improvement.

Abstract Objective: To determine the prevalence of medically unexplained physical symptoms and the characteristics and use of health services in a group of patients with medically unexplained physical symptoms and a group of patients with other illnesses. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, retrospective and multicenter study. We included 1,043 patients over 18 years of age from 30 primary care units of a government health institution, in 11 states of Mexico, attended by 39 family physicians. The prevalence of medically unexplained physical symptoms was determined and both groups with or without symptoms were compared with regard to drug use, laboratory and other studies, leaves of absence, and referrals in the last six months. The group with medically unexplained physical symptoms was diagnosed using the Patient Health Questionnaire and the diagnostic criteria of Reid et al. Emergency or terminal illnesses were excluded. The chi square test was used with a statistical significance of p < 0.05. Results: Medically unexplained physical symptoms was diagnosed in 73 patients (7.0%). The majority were women (91.8%); their predominant symptom was from the gastrointestinal system in 56 (76.7%). This group had a greater use of clinical studies and referrals to other services (mean 1.1 vs. 0.5; p <0.0001 and 0.6 vs. 0.8; p < 0.01, respectively). Conclusions: The prevalence of medically unexplained physical symptoms was low, but with a greater impact on some health services. This could represent an overload in medical costs.

Site quality estimation for forest production is normally accomplished by estimating height growth potential of forest stands, by developing equations that relate height and age of sample trees. However, there are places devoid of trees where investment in productive forests is feasible; better yet if quality potential of regenerating certain forest species can be estimated a priori. We have developed regressive mathematical models to estimate site index in natural stands of Pinus occidentalis, in major productive regions in the Dominican Republic, and established the relationship between index site and edaphic and physiographical variables. Developed models allow the assessment of the productive potential in places without trees. There were no significant differences (α = 0.05) between the site indexes averaged per plot in each locality, but a significant correlation was obtained among site index, height above sea level and aspect (0.273, P = 0.000 and 0.207, P = 0.003) respectively. There were also significant correlations between site index and soil organic matter content within the soil, sodium and potassium . The variables "height above sea level" and azimuth were statistically significant, and can be used to predict the productive potential of places where there are no trees within this region. The estimate of the productive potential by edaphic and physiographical variables for natural stands of P. occidentalis in productive areas constitutes an essential tool in the sustainable management of these forested areas.

This work aims to reflect on the contemporary variation of the relation between literature and market, considering it a relational instance that enables and guarantee the development of artistic practices, at the same time as it modifies and distorts the strictly commercial goals that are almost inevitable to the market. Based on the analysis of Berkeley em Bellagio and Lorde, by João Gilberto Noll, we intend to reflect on a form of coexistence between literature (or art in general) and the market which doesn't imply acceptance or agreement to the hegemonic devices of the cultural industry. On the contrary, one that shows the disruptive capacity of artistic practices with regard to the aligning effects (in cultural terms) of the economic logic, but from a perspective that considers this relation as a positive one.
