Abstract The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence, clinicopathological, and prognostic features of acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) of the oral and maxillofacial region. AciCC cases were retrospectively retrieved from 11 pathology centers of three different countries. Medical records were examined to extract demographic, clinical, pathologic, and follow-up information. A total of 75 cases were included. Females (65.33%) with a mean age of 45.51 years were mostly affected. The lesions usually presented as an asymptomatic (64.28%) nodule (95.66%) in the parotid gland (70.68%). The association of two histopathological patterns was the most common finding (48.93%) and the tumors presented mainly conventional histopathological grades (86.11%). Surgical treatment was performed in the majority of the cases (59.19%). Local recurrence was observed in 20% of the informed cases, regional metastasis in 30.43%, and distant metastasis in 12.50%. The statistical analysis showed that the cases with a solid histopathological pattern (p=0.01), high-grade transformation (p=0.008), recurrence (p=0.007), and regional metastasis (p=0.03) were associated with poor survival. In conclusion, high histopathological transformation, presence of nodal metastasis, and recurrence were prognostic factors for AciCC of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Abstract Aim: To evaluate the chronic effects of resistance training on resting blood pressure, handgrip strength, gait speed, and Timed Up and Go test (TUG) in normotensive and hypertensive elderly individuals. Methods: Experimental study based on TREND. Hypertensive patients were diagnosed by an independent doctor. Before and after 12 weeks of progressive resistance training, we evaluated blood pressure, heart rate, body composition, Timed Up and Go test, gait speed, and handgrip strength. Results: Sample consisted of 41 participants divided into two groups (normotensive n = 28; hypertensive n = 13). We observed significant values in the reduction of blood pressure levels only in the group of hypertensive participants. In functionality outcomes, we observed significant values in all tests and both groups. Outcomes contemplate effect sizes ranging from small to moderate. Conclusion: Progressive resistance training lowers resting blood pressure levels, increases handgrip strength, and improves physical functional performance. Although the normotensive group did not show a reduction in blood pressure levels, an improvement was observed in the functional physical tests.

ABSTRACT Objective: To characterize the plant community of the pastureland in a dairy farm under commercial conditions in Matanzas province, Cuba. Materials and Methods: A study was conducted of the pastureland community on a Ferralitic Red soil, in a typical dairy farm of 120 animals and an area of 72,4 ha. From them, 57,8 dedicated to grazing, distributed in 29 paddocks of 1,9 ha each as average. The variables pasture availability, floristic composition of the pastureland, stocking rate and forage balance, were analyzed. Results: The natural pastures predominated in the system, with a contribution of more than 60,0 % in the dry season and close to 70,0 % in the rainy season. The species Paspalum notatum Alain ex Flügé, Dichanthium annulatum (Forssk.) Stapf and Dichanthium caricosum (L.) A. Camus prevailed. The highest pasture yield was obtained in the rainy season (2,86 t/ha) and the lowest value, in the dry season (1,79 t/ha). Nevertheless, the dry matter supply throughout the year did not exceed 16 kg DM/animal/day. The effective stocking rate values (1,3 LAU/ha) exceeded the established optimum value. The forage balance showed a dry matter deficit higher than 3,0 kg /LAU/day in both seasons. Conclusions: The low pasture yield throughout the year was linked to the high predominance of natural species and weeds present in the pastureland. The highest availability was reached in the rainy season. The stocking rate values are over the optimum value.
Stapf y Dichanthium caricosum (L.) A. Camus.

Abstract Objective: To describe fluid resuscitation practices in Brazilian intensive care units and to compare them with those of other countries participating in the Fluid-TRIPS. Methods: This was a prospective, international, cross-sectional, observational study in a convenience sample of intensive care units in 27 countries (including Brazil) using the Fluid-TRIPS database compiled in 2014. We described the patterns of fluid resuscitation use in Brazil compared with those in other countries and identified the factors associated with fluid choice. Results: On the study day, 3,214 patients in Brazil and 3,493 patients in other countries were included, of whom 16.1% and 26.8% (p < 0.001) received fluids, respectively. The main indication for fluid resuscitation was impaired perfusion and/or low cardiac output (Brazil: 71.7% versus other countries: 56.4%, p < 0.001). In Brazil, the percentage of patients receiving crystalloid solutions was higher (97.7% versus 76.8%, p < 0.001), and 0.9% sodium chloride was the most commonly used crystalloid (62.5% versus 27.1%, p < 0.001). The multivariable analysis suggested that the albumin levels were associated with the use of both crystalloids and colloids, whereas the type of fluid prescriber was associated with crystalloid use only. Conclusion: Our results suggest that crystalloids are more frequently used than colloids for fluid resuscitation in Brazil, and this discrepancy in frequencies is higher than that in other countries. Sodium chloride (0.9%) was the crystalloid most commonly prescribed. Serum albumin levels and the type of fluid prescriber were the factors associated with the choice of crystalloids or colloids for fluid resuscitation.

Abstract The forests have a vital role in carbon capture from the atmosphere. Thus, this work has as its main objective to quantify and analyze biomass of a forest fragment of a Pinus uncinata that belongs to Alinyà Mountain Natural Space, through of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data tools. The natural area is located in the County of Figòls y Alinyà, in the Lleida province, located in Catalonia-Spain. In this sense, using the LIDAR data, the Digital Terrain Models were generated, and relevant statistical calculations were made to subsequently calculate the forest biomass. The linear regression models for biomass had a satisfactory correlation with the inventory data for 2 of the 5 areas considered. In this sense, it was possible to estimate these forest variables for the study area. The calculation of forest biomass by LIDAR data resulted in 9.138.6 tons to an area of 69.04 ha, while the inventory calculations resulted in 11.638.4 tons.

Medicines are employed in undergraduate courses as motivational strategy. The experiment herein developed compares the extraction of paracetamol from generic and brand name drugs. Tablets were used from two commercial sources purchased from local drugstores. Twenty tablets of each drug type were individually weighed to average weight analysis and mass dispersion was statistically analyzed in simulating of quality control. Average weight had variation in accordance with the limit of ±5% specified by Brazilian Pharmacopeia. Tablets of each drug were pulverized and extracted in triplicate with ethyl acetate, and the active ingredient was obtained and identified by melting point and FTIR analyzes. Comparing different student groups at different times, there was change in the mass of paracetamol extracted by a simple extraction, affording mass recovery in the range of 59±17% to 28±1%. However, mass recovery of paracetamol extraction of generic and brand name drugs was similar in each student group. Under Soxhlet extraction condition mass recovery was 80-85%. The procedure developed was adequate to undergraduate laboratory, involves simple infrastructure and execution, tablets are easily obtained, and allows discussion on pharmaceutical equivalence and interchangeability.

BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was confirmed in Brazil in February 2020, the first cases were followed by an increase in the number of cases throughout the country, resulting in an important public health crisis that requires fast and coordinated responses. OBJECTIVES The objective of this work is to describe the isolation and propagation properties of SARS-CoV-2 isolates from the first confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Brazil. METHODS After diagnosis in patients that returned from Italy to the São Paulo city in late February by RT-PCR, SARS-CoV-2 isolates were obtained in cell cultures and characterised by full genome sequencing, electron microscopy and in vitro replication properties. FINDINGS The virus isolate was recovered from nasopharyngeal specimen, propagated in Vero cells (E6, CCL-81 and hSLAM), with clear cytopathic effects, and characterised by full genome sequencing, electron microscopy and in vitro replication properties. Virus stocks - viable (titre 2.11 × 106 TCID50/mL, titre 1.5 × 106 PFUs/mL) and inactivated from isolate SARS.CoV2/SP02.2020.HIAE.Br were prepared and set available to the public health authorities and the scientific community in Brazil and abroad. MAIN CONCLUSION We believe that the protocols for virus growth and studies here described and the distribution initiative may constitute a viable model for other developing countries, not only to help a rapid effective pandemic response, but also to facilitate and support basic scientific research.

Extensive data reported the influence of the physicochemical properties on the bacterial adhesion in biomaterials, of which surface roughness of titanium (Ti) can dictates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) adhesion to orthopedic implants. Herein, we investigated the influence of the Yb:YAG laser texturing of titanium-15molybdenum (TiMo-L) surface on the MRSA (ATCC #33591) cells adhesion and viability. The physicochemical properties and antibacterial performance of TiMo-L were compared to samples of laser-irradiated pure titanium (Ti-L). Polished samples (Ti-P and TiMo-P) were used as controls. Laser textured surfaces presented a high degree of hydrophilicity, an irregular-shaped cavity and a typical microstructured pattern, compared to the polished substrates. The laser irradiation reduced the peaks of molybdenum (Mo) in the surface of Ti-15Mo alloy, which is explained, at least in part, by the difference between the melting point of Ti (1.668 ºC) and Mo (2.623 ºC). Laser texturing raised the MRSA cells viability and statistically increased the bacterial adhesion to pure Ti (P < 0.01; Wilcoxon-Signed rank test) and Ti-15Mo alloy (P < 0.001; Paired t test). The TiMo-L surface was significantly less susceptible to MRSA cell adhesion compared to Ti-L substrate (P < 0.001; Paired t test).

Abstract The comprehension of the social determinants of the main infectious diseases is necessary for its effective control. A transversal study has been designed with data from medical registers concerning the first appointment of the pediatric patients on “Centro de Referência em Doenças Infecciosas e Parasitárias Orestes Diniz UFMG/PBH”, with the objective of investigating the prevalence and determinants of the major infectious diseases among these children. Data from 173 registers was obtained, from which 78.6% were less than 2 years old. Most patients (74.5%) presented congenital infections: 27.7% with syphilis, 21.3% with toxoplasmosis and 20.8% exposed to the human immunodeficiency virus. This practice offers care to children of all ages, from the entire state, and most of them present congenital infections. A quality pre-natal care leads to both a precocious diagnose of these diseases, with appropriate monitoring and treatment, and the practice of preventive measures, hence reducing the incidence of those infections.

ABSTRACT The identification of genotypes more tolerant to water deficit and more efficient in the use of nutrients little available in the soil is an important low-cost strategy to promote sustainable agriculture in marginalized regions. In this sense, a study was carried out in the SITIS Phenotyping Platform of the Embrapa Arroz e Feijão, with the objective of evaluating the drought tolerance of upland rice genotypes tolerant to phosphorus (P) deficiency. The experimental design was performed in a randomized complete block with split-split plots and two replications. In the plots were established two water regimes (with and without water deficit), in the subplots two soil phosphorus contents (25 and 200 mg dm-3) and in sub-subplots 48 upland rice genotypes. The water deficit had more impact on grain yield than the phosphorus supply. The genotypes AB 062037, AB 062041, AB 062138, Arroz Mato Grosso, BRA 02601, BRA 052045, CNA 4098, CNA 6187, Guapa, Guaporé and Rio Paranaíba were classified in the most productive group under both water regimes. The most productive genotypes under water deficit showed higher root density in the deeper soil layers. The most productive genotypes in the two water regimes were also those that showed the highest transpiration.

Abstract In the present work, spatial and seasonal fluctuations of the abundance and diversity of mesozooplankton are presented, with special attention being given to copepod assemblages from coastal area of the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FNA) (3°50'24''S and 32°24'48''W). Sampling was carried out during the dry and rainy seasons of two consecutive years (July and December 2013) and (June and November 2014). A total of 37 mesozooplankton taxa were recorded, being the copepods the most diversified group (15 taxa). The Subclass Copepoda dominated in both periods sampled, comprising 53% and 86% of the total abundance in the dry and rainy season respectively. The species considered abundant were: Calanopia americana, Undinula vulgaris, Oithona plumifera and Corycaeus speciosus. The rainy season favored a significant increase in the abundance of mesozooplankton and copepods. However, a low value of the Shannon-Wiener diversity index was observed in this same seasonal period. This was explained by the dominance of the species C. americana and U. vulgaris in the studied area. Spatial differences have not been verified. The copepod assemblages was composed mostly by species considered as predator-carnivours of greater importance on the pelagic trophic web, indicators of oligotrophic conditions and components of a major portion of fish food items. Thus, we suggest that a spatially homogeneous mesozooplankton community characterizes the coastal area of Fernando de Noronha Archipelago with variations related mainly to the seasonal factor.
