Resumo O estudo objetivou analisar a estrutura, composição e diversidade de espécies arbóreas do fragmento florestal urbano do Parque Natural Municipal da Lajinha (Juiz de Fora, MG, Brasil). Foram alocadas 25 parcelas de 20 x 20 m (1 ha), onde foram mensurados todos os indivíduos com DAP ≥ 5cm. Foram amostrados 1393 indivíduos vivos, pertencentes a 155 espécies e 51 famílias botânicas. As espécies com maiores VI foram: Nectandra nitidula (15,0), Eugenia hiemalis (12,6), Bathysa australis (9,94), Virola bicuhyba (8,71) e Alchornia triplinervia (8,02). O índice de diversidade de espécies de Shannon foi um dos mais altos para as florestas da região (H’ = 4,36 nats.ind-1). O elevado índice de equabilidade de Pielou (J’ = 0,87) e as análises multivariadas (agrupamento e DCA) mostraram alta heterogeneidade florística na comunidade. Complementarmente, a presença de espécies raras da flora de MG e de espécies nacionalmente ameaçadas (Ocotea odorifera, Virola bicuhyba, Dicksonia sellowiana) evidenciam a área como importante relicto de conservação da biodiversidade na paisagem urbana.

Abstract We aim to analyze the structure, composition and diversity of tree species of the urban forest fragment of the Lajinha Municipal Natural Park (Juiz de Fora, MG, Brazil). 25 plots of 20 x 20 m (1 ha) were randomly allocated, where all individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm were measured. We sampled 1393 living individuals belonging to 155 species and 51 botanical families. The five species with the highest VI were: Nectandra nitidula (15,0), Eugenia hiemalis (12,6), Bathysa australis (9,94), Virola bicuhyba (8,71) and Alchornia triplinervia (8,02). The diversity index of Shannon was one of the highest for the region's forests (H '= 4.36 nats.ind-1). The high Pielou equability index (J’ = 0.87) and the multivariate analyzes (cluster analysis and DCA) showed high floristic heterogeneity in the community. In a complementary way, the presence of rare species of the MG flora and nationally threatened species (Ocotea odorifera, Virola bicuhyba, Dicksonia sellowiana) evidences the area as an important conservation area of biodiversity in the urban landscape.

RESUMO A radiação é um dos aspectos que influenciam a composição de espécies, sendo assim, a luz é um fator limitante para o crescimento das árvores. O estudo objetivou avaliar as variações morfológicas foliares entre indivíduos de Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC., sob diferentes condições de luminosidade, em uma floresta urbana. O fragmento caracteriza-se por possuir uma área sem formação de dossel e uma com regeneração mais avançada. Foram coletados ramos de cinco indivíduos, totalizando 100 folhas. Avaliou-se a área foliar, massa fresca, massa seca, conteúdo de água, área foliar específica e teor de matéria seca das folhas. A análise de variância mostrou que a maioria das características (massa seca, área foliar específica, teor de matéria seca das folhas) variaram significativamente. A massa seca, conteúdo de água e área foliar apresentaram alta correlação com a massa fresca em ambos os ambientes. A variação morfológica encontrada em M. splendens permite a criação de estratégias de crescimento e estabelecimento da espécie de acordo com as condições ambientais.

ABSTRACT Solar radiation is one of the aspects which most influence species composition, so light is a limiting factor to tree growth in forests. This study aimed to evaluate the leaf morphological variations between individuals of the Myrcia splendens (Sw.) DC. species under different light conditions in an urban forest. The fragment is characterized by having an open canopy area and an advanced regeneration stage in which branches of five individuals were collected, totaling 100 leaves. The traits evaluated were leaf area, fresh biomass, dry biomass, water content, specific leaf area and leaf dry matter content. An analysis of variance showed that most of the morphological traits (dry biomass, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content) varied significantly. Furthermore, variables such as dry biomass, water content and leaf area showed a high correlation with fresh biomass in both areas. The morphological variation found in M. splendens allows for creating growth and establishment strategies according to the environmental conditions.

Abstract Currently, protected areas around the world have a demand for volunteer work. At the same time, people in several countries that house protected areas seek out these spaces to serve as volunteers. This process occurs in a scenario strongly influenced by the neoliberal economy, which is marked by cuts in environmental management budgets and increased protected areas visitation. Based on this context, the objective was to analyze the role of volunteer work in protected areas in the context of neoliberal paradigm predominance. For this purpose, it was established a current overview of volunteer activity through a case study in Brazil by collecting information from volunteers and managers, heads or managers of protected areas receptive to volunteer work in interviews using structured questionnaires. It was found that Parques Nacionais are the categories with the greatest demand for volunteer work. It was also found the most part of volunteers is between 20 and 30 years old, and their education level is higher education in undergraduate courses related to biological sciences. It was identified significant differences between the perceptions of managers and volunteers about volunteer work objectives. However, both groups indicated that “Environmental education/environmental interaction and interpretation” and “Support for visitation” are the most frequently performed activities, and the main form of support and trade-off for volunteer work is the offering of certificates. Thus, volunteer work seeks to contribute to the protected areas objectives by supporting the management of these areas during public use activities. However, in the current scenario, this work is palliative in the face of the impacts of the dismantling of environmental policy that affects most countries that have Protected areas and have surrendered to neoliberal conservation.

Resumo A presença de florestas dentro de centros urbanos tem grande importância, principalmente devido aos serviços ecossistêmicos proporcionados por elas. Fragmentos urbanos são pouco estudados e trabalhos quantitativos focados na flora arbórea na área do presente estudo nunca foram realizados. O objetivo foi avaliar a composição, estrutura e diversidade de espécies regenerantes de uma floresta urbana, oriunda de um projeto paisagístico. Buscou-se responder a seguinte questão: a floresta está conseguindo avançar no processo sucessional após 150 anos de regeneração natural? O estudo foi realizado em uma área com tamanho total de aproximadamente 7,8 ha e de predomínio da Floresta Atlântica. A amostragem foi realizada em 25 parcelas de 5 x 5 m, nas quais todos os indivíduos com diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP) < 5 cm e altura > 1 m foram amostrados. Encontram-se 1297 indivíduos, distribuídos em 84 espécies. Três espécies exóticas com conhecido potencial invasor foram encontradas: Coffea arabica, Artocarpus heterophyllus e Persea americana. A espécie Coffea arabica apresentou o maior Valor de Importância na comunidade. O índice de diversidade de Shannon foi de H’ = 3,10 nats.ind-1, e equabilidade de Pielou de J’ = 0,70. A análise de Cluster (coeficiente de Morisita-Horn) evidenciou uma comunidade com baixa heterogeneidade interna. A análise dos grupos ecológicos revelou uma comunidade com dificuldades em avançar para estágios sucessionais superiores. Este estudo é importante para reforçar o risco das espécies exóticas invasoras em projetos paisagísticos.

Abstract The presence of forest within urban centers has great importance, especially in relation to ecosystem services provided by them. Urban forests are poorly studied. Moreover, quantitative studies focused on tree flora of the present study area remain to be established. Here, we evaluated the composition, structure and diversity of species in regeneration from an urban forest, originating from a landscaping design. We sought to answer the following question: Did the forest advance in the succession process after 150 years of regeneration? The survey was done on 25 plots of 5 x 5 m, where all the individuals with diameter at breast height (DBH) < 5 cm and height > 1 m were sampled. We found 1297 individuals, distributed in 84 species. Three alien species with potential invasive acquaintance were found: Coffea arabica, Artocarpus heterophyllus and Persea americana. Coffea arabica showed the highest importance value in the community. Shannon diversity index was H’= 3,10 nats.ind-1, and Pielou equability J’ = 0.70. The cluster analysis (Morisita-Horn coefficient) showed a community with low internal heterogeneity. The analysis of ecological groups revealed a community with predominantly early successional groups. Despite of 150 years of natural regeneration, our findings indicated a community with difficulties in advancing to higher successional stages. This study is important to highlight the risk of invasive alien species in landscaping designs.

RESUMO A Floresta Ombrófila Mista é uma das fitofisionomias mais ameaçadas do Brasil. Estima-se que apenas cerca de 3% da cobertura original desta formação florestal tenham restado. Em Minas Gerais, os remanescentes destas florestas com araucária são raros, restringindo-se principalmente ao Sul do estado. O trabalho objetivou avaliar a estrutura, a diversidade e a heterogeneidade de espécies do estrato arbóreo de uma Floresta Ombrófila Mista Altomontana em seu extremo norte de distribuição, Minas Gerais - Brasil. O presente estudo foi conduzido no Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio (PESP), que engloba o único remanescente de floresta com araucária em uma Unidade de Conservação (UC) de proteção integral em Minas Gerais. Foram alocadas na área 25 parcelas de 20 x 10 m (0,5 ha) e toda vegetação arbustiva-arbórea com DAP ≥ 4,8 cm foi mensurada, identificada e teve a altura estimada. Amostramos 1.158 indivíduos, pertencentes a 41 espécies, 28 gêneros e 22 famílias. Foi observada uma comunidade com forte concentração dos Valores de Importância (VI) nas três primeiras espécies (Podocarpus lambertii, Araucaria angustifolia e Myrceugenia bracteosa), que juntas somam 52,74% do VI total. A área basal total da comunidade foi de 30,82 m² (61,65 m².ha-1), estando entre uma das maiores já registradas para a Floresta Ombrófila Mista. O índice de diversidade de espécies de Shannon (H’ = 2,67 nats.ind-1) está na faixa observada em outros estudos na formação Altomontana. Por meio de análises multivariadas, constatou-se baixa heterogeneidade florística na comunidade, já que as principais espécies, representadas em termos de densidade na matriz de análise, estão bem distribuídas por toda a floresta. O estudo descreve uma comunidade bem estruturada e com grande acúmulo de biomassa, mostrando a relevância da UC para a preservação desta importante, rara e ameaçada fitofisionomia em Minas Gerais.

ABSTRACT The Mixed Ombrophylous Forest is one of the most threatened forest ecosystems in the country and it is estimated that only about 3% of the original covering of this vegetation type has remained. In Minas Gerais state, these remaining forests are rare, restricted mainly to the south of the state. This study aimed to evaluate the structure, diversity and heterogeneity of tree layer species of a Mixed Ombrophylous Forest in its most extreme northern distribution (Minas Gerais state, Brazil). The study was conducted in Parque Estadual da Serra do Papagaio (PESP), which includes the only remaining of araucaria forest in a full protection Conservation Unit (CU) in Minas Gerais state. We allocated in the area 25 permanent plots of 20m x 10m (0.5 ha) and every shrub and tree vegetation with DBH ≥ 4.8 cm was measured, identified and the height was estimated. We measured 1,158 individuals, belonging to 41 species, 28 genera and 22 families. It was observed a community with a strong concentration of the importance values (IV) in the first three species (Podocarpus lambertii, Araucaria angustifolia and Myrceugenia bracteosa), that together add up 52.74% of total IV of the community. The basal area of the community was 30.82 m² (61.65 m².ha-1), being one of the largest ever registered for Mixed Ombrophylous Forests. The Shannon species diversity index (H’ = 2.67 nats.ind-1) was in the range observed in other studies of Upper Montane Mixed Ombrophylous Forest. Multivariate analysis indicated a low floristic heterogeneity in the community; however, this low heterogeneity occurred because the main species in terms of density are also the most frequent and are distributed throughout the forest. The study shows a well-structured community with large accumulation of biomass, showing the importance of the conservation unit for the preservation of this important, rare and threatened vegetation type in Minas Gerais state.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to analyse the tree community of an urban forest with 40 years of natural regeneration after abandonment of the degraded land. We hypothesized that after four decades of forest succession, the diversity, structure and functional aspects of the community would be similar to other secondary surrounding forests. We established ten plots (20x 20m), where all trees with DBH ≥ 5 cm were sampled. The inventory included 605 trees (1513 ind.ha-1 ) distributed across 25 species. The diversity index (H’ = 0.92) and basal area (10.43 m2.ha-1) were lower than in surrounding forests. The results showed a great dominance of Eremanthus erythropappus with consequent delay in successional advance, and low potential of attraction of fauna, which suggests the need for management to control its population. Understanding the functioning of novel urban forests and discussing these neglected ecosystems is fundamental to guide management actions for both human and ecosystem prosperity.

RESUMO Este estudo foi realizado em um fragmento de floresta estacional semidecidual montana (Minas Gerais) com histórico de perturbação antrópica. Os objetivos foram caracterizar a composição, estrutura e diversidade florística das epífitas vasculares e investigar a similaridade florística da comunidade com outras áreas de florestas estacionais urbanas no Brasil. Foram amostrados 61 forófitos e registradas 47 espécies de epífitas. As famílias mais ricas foram Bromeliaceae (sete) e Polypodiaceae (sete). A categoria ecológica mais comum foi a de holoepífitas acidentais com 21 espécies - um resultado inédito na Região Neotropical. O índice de Shannon foi 2,95 e o índice de uniformidade de Pielou foi 0,77, mostrando diversidade relativamente alta com certa dominância de poucas espécies, enquanto as espécies raras foram numerosas. Análises de similaridade mostraram gradiente longitudinal e forte influência da distância do oceano sobre as relações florísticas, assim como influência das florestas ombrófilas densas sobre a composição das epífitas vasculares na área estudada.

ABSTRACT This study was conducted in a fragment of montane seasonal semi-deciduous forest (Minas Gerais State) with a history of anthropogenic disturbance. Our goals were to characterise the composition, structure and floristic diversity of vascular epiphytes and to investigate the floristic similarities of the community with other areas of urban seasonal forests in Brazil. We sampled 61 phorophytes with 47 epiphytic species. The richest families were Bromeliaceae (seven) and Polypodiaceae (seven). The most common ecological category was accidental holoepiphytes with 21 species - an unprecedented result for the Neotropical region. The Shannon index was 2.95 and the Pielou evenness index 0.77, showing a relatively high diversity with a few dominant species and numerous rare species. Similarity analyses showed a longitudinal gradient and strong influence of the distance from the ocean on floristic relationships as well as influence of dense ombrophilous forests on the composition of the vascular epiphytes of the surveyed area.

Existem poucos registros na literatura sobre a colonização de macroinvertebrados bentônicos em briófitas. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar a fauna de oligoquetas em briófitas aderidas a pedras em um córrego de primeira ordem. As coletas foram realizadas em um fragmento de Mata Atlântica durante os períodos seco e chuvoso. Foram identificados 15 taxa de um total de 422 espécimes de oligoquetas, sendo os mais abundantes Pristina sp.1, Enchytraeidae e Pristina jenkinae. Ao contrário de outros habitats, onde a abundância de macroinvertebrados tende a ser maior no período de estiagem, diferenças significativas na abundância, riqueza, composição e diversidade não foram observadas em relação aos dois períodos. Os resultados do presente estudo indicam que as briófitas são possíveis áreas de refúgio para os oligoquetas em período de maior corrente.

There are few reports in the literature about the colonization of benthic macroinvertebrates on bryophytes. The aim of the present study was to analyzed the oligochaetes established on bryophytes adhered to stones in a first-order stream. The collections were carried out in an Atlantic Forest fragment area during the dry and rainy seasons. We identified 15 taxa from a total of 422 oligochaetes specimens, of which the most abundant were Pristina sp.1, Enchytraeidae and Pristina jenkinae. Unlike other habitats, where the abundance of macroinvertebrates tends to be greater in the dry season, we did not find any significant differences in the abundance, richness, composition and diversity between the two periods. The results of this study indicate that bryophytes are possible areas of refuge for oligochaetes in periods of faster water flow.
