Abstract Conceived in the 1960s, a period of great economic and social transformations in Brazil, Folkcommunication was born with the aim of overcoming Communication problems by seeing and understanding the reactions of a people who lived on the margins, without any engagement with the media. In this same period, the coupling of “communication” and “development” seeks a public atmosphere favorable to social transformation in Latin America. Considering that the two theoretical approaches complement each other, this work proposes a crossing between Folkcommunication and Communication for Development (C4D), based on a literature review. The contribution of this research is based on the recognition of folkcommunication within the perspective of social development and on the appreciation of the dialogue between the two aspects.

Resumo Pensada na década de 1960, período de grandes transformações econômicas e sociais no Brasil, a Folkcomunicação nasce com o objetivo de suprir os problemas da Comunicação ao enxergar e compreender as reações de um povo que vivia à margem, sem engajamento com os meios de comunicação. Neste mesmo período, a acoplagem “comunicação” e “desenvolvimento” busca uma atmosfera pública favorável à transformação social na América Latina. Por considerar que as duas abordagens teóricas se complementam, o presente trabalho propõe um cruzamento entre a Folkcomunicação e a Comunicação para o Desenvolvimento (C4D), a partir de revisão bibliográfica. A contribuição desta pesquisa se baseia no reconhecimento da Folkcomunicação dentro da perspectiva do desenvolvimento social e na valorização do diálogo entre as duas vertentes.

Resumen Durante la década de 1960, período de grandes cambios económicos y sociales en Brasil, la Folkcomunicación nació con el objetivo de suplir problemas de la Comunicación, a partir de la observación y comprensión de las reacciones de un pueblo que vivía al margen, y sin compromiso con los medios de comunicación. En el mismo período, la “comunicación” y el “desarrollo”, buscó un clima público favorable a la transformación social en América Latina. Por considerar que los dos enfoques teóricos se complementan, el presente trabajo propone un cruce entre Folkcomunicación y Comunicación para el Desarrollo (C4D), a partir de una revisión bibliográfica. La contribución de esta investigación se basa en el reconocimiento de la Folkcomunicación desde la perspectiva del desarrollo social y en la valorización del diálogo entre las dos vertientes.

ABSTRACT Objective Evaluate the effects of maternal low-protein diet on the oxidative stress in the hypothalamus of 60-day-old rats. Methods Male Wistar rats were divided into two experimental groups according to the mother’s diet during pregnancy and lactation; control group (NP:17% casein n=6) and a malnourished group (LP:8% casein n=6). At 60 days of life, the rats were sacrificed for the collection of the hypothalamus for further biochemical analysis. Results Our results showed an increase in oxidative stress in malnourished group, observed through an increase in carbonyl content (p=0.0357), a reduction in the activity of the glutathione-S-transferase enzyme (p=0.0257), and a reduction in the non-enzymatic antioxidant capacity evidenced by the decrease in the ratio reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (p=0.0406) and total thiol levels (p=0.0166). Conclusion A low-protein diet during pregnancy and lactation is closely associated with increased oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant capacity in the hypothalamus of sixty-day-old rats.

RESUMO Objetivo Avaliar os efeitos da restrição proteica materna sobre o estresse oxidativo no hipotálamo de ratos de 60 dias de idade. Métodos Ratos Wistar machos foram divididos em dois grupos experimentais de acordo com a dieta da mãe durante a gestação e lactação: grupo controle (NP: 17% caseína n=6) e grupo desnutrido (LP: 8% caseína n=6). Aos 60 dias de vida, os ratos foram sacrificados para coleta do hipotálamo para posterior análise bioquímica. Resultados Os resultados demonstraram aumento do estresse oxidativo no grupo desnutrido, observado através do aumento do conteúdo de cabonilas (p=0,0357) e redução da atividade da enzima glutationa-S-transferase (p=0,0257) e da capacidade antioxidante não enzimática, evidenciada pela queda da razão glutationa reduzida/glutationa oxidada (p=0,0406) e dos níveis de tióis totais (p=0,0166). Conclusão Uma dieta com baixo teor de proteínas durante a gestação e lactação está intimamente associada ao aumento do estresse oxidativo e à redução da capacidade antioxidante no hipotálamo de ratos de 60 dias de vida.

Abstract Hydrocotyle umbellata L., Araliaceae, is a species that is recommended in Ayurvedic medicine for its effects on the central nervous system, such as anxiolytic and memory-stimulant effects. Despite the medicinal potential of this species, its phytopharmaceutical and technological potential to produce standardized extracts has not been investigated. This study analyzes the influence of spray drying parameters on the contents of the chemical markers (total phenolic, total flavonoid, and hibalactone) and the functional properties of H. umbellata extract. The optimization of drying conditions was performed using a central composite design combined with response surface methodology and desirability function approach. The mathematical models fitted to experimental data indicated that all the evaluated drying parameters significantly influenced the chemical contents. The optimal conditions were: inlet temperature of 120 °C, feed flow rate of 4 mL min-1, and colloidal silicon dioxide:maltodextrin ratio of 16%:4%. Under these conditions, the powder samples had spherical particles and desirable physicochemical and functional properties, such as low water activity and moisture content, good product recovery, reconstitution, and flowability. Thus, spray drying might be a promising technique for processing standardized H. umbellata extracts.

ABSTRACT COVID-19 is commonly associated with high serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and the post-infection status can disturb self-tolerance and trigger autoimmune responses. We are reporting a 45-year-old male who was admitted with fatigue, jaundice, elevated liver enzymes (with cholestatic pattern), and acute kidney injury two weeks after recovering from a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection. Serologies for viral hepatitis and anti-mitochondrial antibody were negative, while anti-nuclear and anti-smooth muscle antibodies were positive. There were no signs of chronic liver disease, and a magnetic resonance cholangiography showed no dilatation of biliary ducts. Histologic evaluation of the liver evidenced numerous foci of lobular necrosis without ductopenia or portal biliary reaction. Considering the autoantibody profile and histologic changes, the medical team started oral prednisone, but there was a suboptimal biochemical response in the outpatient follow-up. Two months later, a second liver biopsy was performed and revealed non-suppurative destructive chronic cholangitis, extensive areas of confluent necrosis with hepatocytes regenerating into pseudorosettes, and numerous plasma cells. According to the Paris Criteria, the patient was then diagnosed with an autoimmune hepatitis-primary biliary cholangitis overlap syndrome (AIH-PBC-OS). After adding azathioprine and ursodeoxycholic acid to the treatment, there was a satisfactory response. This is the second worldwide report of an AIH-PBC-OS triggered by COVID-19, but the first case with a negative anti-mitochondrial antibody. In this setting, histologic evaluation of the liver by an experienced pathologist is a hallmark of achieving the diagnosis and correctly treat the patient.

ABSTRACT The Cerambycidae Oncideres impluviata (Germar, 1823) is an important insect pest for Acacia mearnsii De Wild in Southern Brazil. The damage caused by their girdling behavior reduces tree productivity, specially in the early years of plant establishment, when girdling is performed on the main trunk of trees. Here, we used a fragment of the mtDNA COI gene to analyze the genetic diversity, population structure and demography of O. impluviata in Southern Brazil, as well as to present the first hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships among species of the genus Oncideres. Our results identified five distinct haplotypes among the populations of O. impluviata, with the most common haplotype identified as O.imp_COI_01. The phylogenetic inferences corroborated the monophyly of O. impluviata with maximum statistical support. In addition, the phylogeny recovered three main population strains that are largely congruent with the haplotype network, which includes two lineages that are found in different edaphic regions of Rio Grande do Sul (Serra do Sudeste and Encosta Inferior do Nordeste). This is the first molecular phylogenetic assessment of O. impluviata. Our findings provide insights into the evolution of a significant species for the Brazilian forestry sector, as well as new resources for planning of pest management strategies.

Abstract Inborn errors of metabolism are rare disorders with few therapeutic options for their treatments, which can make patients suffer with complications. Therefore, compounded drugs might be a promising option given that they have the ability of meeting the patient’s specific needs, (i) identification of the main drugs described in the literature; (ii) proposal of compounding systems and (iii) calculation of the budgetary addition for the inclusion of these drugs into the Brazilian Unified Health System. The research conducted a literature review and used management data as well as data obtained from official Federal District government websites. The study identified 31 drugs for the treatment of inborn errors of metabolism. Fifty eight percent (58%) (18) of the medicines had their current demand identified, which are currently unmet by the local Health System. The estimated budget for the production of compounded drugs was of R$363,16.98 per year for approximately 300 patients. This estimated cost represents a budgetary addition of only 0.17% from the total of expenditures planned for drug acquirement. There is a therapeutic gap for inborn errors of metabolism and compounding pharmacies show potential in ensuring access to medicine therapy with a low-cost investment.

ABSTRACT Objectives: Currently, not much is known about the interactions between voice and growth hormone (GH). We have described large kindred with isolated GH deficiency (IGHD) due to a GHRH receptor mutation, resulting in severe short stature and high-pitched voice. These IGHD individuals have little interest in GH treatment, as they consider themselves “short long-lived people”, rather than patients. Interestingly, they report normal general quality of life, but they rate their Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL) as low. Here, we assessed the social and auditory-perceptual impacts of artistic-intervention voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises (SOVTE) and choral singing, on their voices. Material and methods: Seventeen GH-naïve adult IGHD individuals were enrolled in a single-arm interventional pre-post study with 13 weekly sessions of choir singing over 90 days. Outcome measures were V-RQOL scores, self-assessment of voice, and auditory-perceptual analysis (GRBAS scale, G: grade of the severity of dysphonia; R: roughness; B: breathiness; A: asthenia; and S: strain). Results: Marked improvements in total (p = 0.0001), physical (p = 0.0002), and socioemotional (p = 0.0001) V-RQOL scores and in self-assessment of voice (p = 0.004) were found. The general grades of vocal deviation (p = 0.0001), roughness (p = 0.0001), breathiness (p = 0.0001) and strain (p = 0.0001) exhibited accentuated reductions. Conclusions: Voice therapy with semioccluded vocal tract exercises and choral training improved social impact and perceptual voice assessments in IGHD subjects and markedly improved their voice-related quality of life. This is particularly important in a setting where GH replacement therapy is not widely accepted.

Resumo Este artigo estima o impacto de longo prazo de uma política de austeridade sobre as regiões brasileiras. A principal contribuição é medir esses efeitos a partir de um modelo dinâmico e inter-regional de equilíbrio geral computável, capturando os impactos indiretos em setores e regiões, somado aos efeitos diretos do corte dos gastos. Os principais resultados mostram que o ajuste fiscal atenuaria o crescimento na maioria dos estados brasileiros em 2037. Municípios localizados nas regiões mais pobres seriam relativamente mais afetados. Além disso, o ajuste teria um impacto negativo na desigualdade regional em todos os cenários, tanto a nível estadual quanto municipal.

Abstract This paper aims to estimate the long-term impacts of an austerity policy in the Brazilian regions. Our main contribution is to measure those effects using a dynamic interregional general equilibrium model, capturing the indirect impacts in sectors and regions, in addition to the direct effects of the expenditure cuts. The main results show that the fiscal adjustment would attenuate growth in most of the Brazilian states by 2037. Municipalities located in the poorest regions would be relatively more affected. Furthermore, the adjustment would have a negative impact on regional inequalities in all scenarios, both at the state and municipal levels.

Abstract The Lepidoptera family Saturniidae is commonly utilized as a bioindicator for ecosystem monitoring. During six years of sampling, the study explored the dynamics of the Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, species richness, Pielou equity, dominance, and abundance ecological parameters under the effect of seasonality. The research took place in the Atlantic Forest remnants at Vale Natural Reserve in Linhares, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Blacklight traps were used to collect the samples. 1,445 specimens were collected and classified into four subfamilies, 30 genera, and 48 species. There is a large difference in richness and abundance due to temperature in different seasons. When the temperature drops, the abundance declines. When comparing years, equitability and dominance are not significant. During periods of more rainfall, there is a higher abundance of species (richness). Despite variations in abundance and diversity throughout the years, the Saturniidae are known for their low resistance and strong resilience.

Resumen La familia Saturniidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera), es comúnmente la más utilizada como bioindicador en el monitoreo de ecosistemas. Durante seis años de muestreo, el estudio exploró la dinámica de los parámetros ecológicos de riqueza de especies, Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, equidad de Pielou, dominancia y abundancia, bajo el efecto de la estacionalidad. Se desarrolló en los remanentes de la Mata Atlántica en la Reserva Natural Vale en Linhares, Estado de Espirito Santo, Brasil. Se utilizaron trampas de luz negra para recolectar las muestras. Se recolectaron 1.445 especímenes representados en cuatro subfamilias, 30 géneros y 48 especies. En los diferentes períodos estacionales, se encontró una gran diferencia en riqueza y abundancia debido a la temperatura, por lo tanto, cuando bajaba la temperatura, la abundancia disminuía. Al comparar los seis años de muestreo, la equidad y el dominio no fueron significativos. Durante los períodos de mayor precipitación, hubo una mayor abundancia de especies (riqueza). A pesar de las variaciones en abundancia y diversidad a lo largo de los años, los Saturniidae son conocidos por su baja resistencia y fuerte resiliencia.

RESUMO Objetivou-se discutir sobre os impactos da Covid-19 a grupos populacionais, considerando-se as vulnerabilidades à luz de gênero, raça e classe social. Trata-se de um estudo exploratório, de revisão integrativa da literatura, na perspectiva dos referidos marcadores sociais, que podem influenciar no prog- nóstico da Covid-19. Identificaram-se 1.343 publicações indexadas nas bases de dados Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) e Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (Lilacs). Contudo, de acordo com critérios preestabelecidos, foram incluídas oito publicações. Os marcadores sociais referidos se apresentaram como fatores/aspectos vulnerabilizadores aos impactos da Covid-19 em diversos cenários internacionais, nacionais ou regionais, diante da limitação de recursos operacionais para saúde, emprego, educação e moradia. Nesse contexto, emerge a necessidade histórica de implementar estratégias para democratização das oportunidades não somente no período pandêmico, mas especialmente no período pós-pandêmico. Para tanto, cabe a adoção de políticas socioe- conômicas de maior impacto e abrangência na vida cotidiana das populações, com o intuito de fortalecer a autonomia, a cidadania e os direitos à vida em face de antigas e novas formas de exclusão social.

ABSTRACT The objective was to discuss the impacts of Covid-19 on population groups, considering vulner- abilities in light of gender, race, and social class. This is an exploratory study, with an integrative literature review, from the perspective of the referred social markers, which can influence to the prognosis of Covid-19. A total of 1.343 publications were identified in the databases of the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), the Virtual Health Library (VHL), and the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs). However, according to the established criteria, eight publications were included. The referred social markers presented as factors/aspects that make the impacts of Covid-19 in several international, national, or regional scenarios, given the limited operational resources for health, employment, education, and housing. In this context, the historical need to implement strategies for the democratization of opportunities emerges not only in the pandemic period, but especially in the post-pandemic period. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt socioeconomic policies of greater impact and coverage in the daily lives of the population, with the aim of strengthening autonomy, citizenship, and the right to life in the face of old and new forms of social exclusion.

Abstract Background: Melittin has shown antiproliferative effects on tumor cells. Therefore, it comprises a valuable compound for studies on cancer treatment. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have reported melittin effects on bone metastasis. Herein, we propose an approach based on intrametastatic melittin injection to treat bone metastases in colorectal cancer. Methods: Following the characterization of melittin and antiproliferative tests in vitro, a single dose was injected through intrametastatic route into the mouse bone metastasis model. Following treatment, metastasis growth was evaluated. Results: A single dose of melittin was able to inhibit metastasis growth. Histological analysis showed necrosis and inflammatory processes in melittin-treated metastasis. Except by mild weight loss, no other systemic effects were observed. Conclusion: Our data suggest that melittin might be a promising agent for the future development of treatment strategies aiming to reduce the bone metastasis skeletal-related impact in colorectal cancer patients with bone metastasis.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar, de forma quantitativa, o movimento escapular dos pacientes submetidos à cirurgia de Latarjet e identificar se apresentam discinesia escapular (DE). Além disso, correlacionar com a clínica e com o grau de elevação do ombro. Método: Estudo transversal realizado no Laboratório de Análise do Movimento (LAM), no Instituto de Ciências da Atividade Física e Esporte que avaliou de forma quantitativa, utilizando marcadores retro-refletivos esféricos, os movimentos escapulares do grupo controle (10 voluntários) e 22 pacientes (23 ombros operados), submetidos à cirurgia de Latarjet, entre os anos de 2011 e 2016, com pelo menos um ano de pós-operatório. Foram utilizados os resultados do grupo controle como parâmetro de normalidade e posteriormente comparados aos do grupo de pacientes operados. Avaliadas a inclinação posterior, rotação superior e rotação medial das escápulas nos ângulos de 60°, 90° e 120° de elevação, tanto na fase ascendente quanto na descendente. A análise estatística utilizada foi a multivariada da variância (MANOVA) comparando os lados direito e esquerdo do grupo controle e posteriormente o grupo controle com o grupo pós-operatório (p = 0,05 em todos os testes). Resultados: Ao compararmos a média dos resultados da avaliação quantitativa do grupo controle com o grupo dos operados, não foram evidenciadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os dois grupos, assim como os lados dominante e o não dominante do grupo controle. Conclusão: A cirurgia de Latarjet não causa DE, apesar de haver alterações em algum plano dos movimentos escapulares na fase ascendente e/ou descendente. Nível de Evidência III, Estudo Retrospectivo Comparativo.

ABSTRACT Objective: To quantitatively assess the scapular movement of patients who underwent Latarjet surgery and to identify if they present scapular dyskinesia (SD), as well as correlate with the clinic state and the elevation degree of the shoulder. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at the Movement Analysis Laboratory (LAM), at the Institute of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, that quantitatively evaluated, using spherical retroreflective markers, the scapular movements of the control group (10 volunteers) and 22 patients (23 operated shoulders) that had been submitted to Latarjet surgery, between 2011 and 2016, with at least one year postoperative. The results of the control group were used as a parameter of normality and compared to those of the operated group. Posterior inclination, superior rotation, and medial rotation of the scapula were evaluated at angles of 60°, 90°, and 120° of elevation, both in ascending and descending phases. The statistical analysis used was the multivariate variance (MANOVA), comparing the right and left sides of the control group and, subsequently, the control group with the postoperative group (p = 0.05 in all tests). Results: When comparing the mean of the results of the quantitative evaluation of the control group with the operated group, no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups and between the dominant and non-dominant sides of the control group. Conclusion: Latarjet surgery does not cause SD, although there are alterations in some plane of the scapular movements in the ascending and/or descending phase. Resumo Objetivos: identificar fatores de risco ocupacionais para neoplasias hematológicas, leucemia, linfomas e mieloma múltiplo. Métodos: estudo caso-controle conduzido com casos de neoplasias hematológicas e controles recrutados do mesmo serviço, com outros diagnósticos, pareados por frequência, sexo e idade. Entrevistas individuais foram realizadas por pesquisadores treinados, utilizando um questionário estruturado. Informações sobre a história ocupacional, uso e características de exposições a substâncias químicas, em geral, e a agrotóxicos foram registradas. Foram estimadas odds ratios (OR), por meio de modelos de regressão logística não-condicional multivariável para análise exploratória. Resultados: foram incluídos 61 casos e 146 controles. Trabalho na agropecuária (OR: 2,18; intervalo de confiança de 95% (IC95%): 1,10;4,30), exposição ocupacional a agrotóxicos (OR: 2,37; IC95%: 1,18;4,77), e tempo total de exposição ocupacional a agrotóxicos na vida laboral em horas - curto (OR: 3,52; IC95%: 1,25;9,87) e longo (OR: 3,95; IC95%: 1,54;10,14) - foram fatores de risco para neoplasias hematológicas, em comparação aos não expostos. Essas medidas foram ajustadas por consumo de álcool e tabagismo, prática de atividade física, renda, escolaridade e história de exposição ocupacional a produtos químicos. Conclusão: a exposição ocupacional a agrotóxicos se associa a neoplasias hematológicas, independentemente de características do estilo de vida e nível socioeconômico.

Abstract Objectives: to identify the occupational risk factors for hematological neoplasms, specifically leukemia, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma. Methods: this is a case-control study. Cases were individuals with hematological neoplasms and controls were individuals with other diagnoses; frequency-matched by sex and age. Individual interviews were conducted by trained researchers using a structured questionnaire. We collected information on participants’ occupational history and chemicals use and exposure, in general, and pesticides, in particular. Odds ratios (OR) were used as association measurements, estimated by multivariate non-conditional logistic regression models for exploratory analysis. Results: 61 cases and 146 controls were included. We found that agricultural work (OR: 2.18; 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.10;4.30), occupational exposure to pesticides (OR: 2.37; 95%CI: 1.18;4.77), and total occupational exposure to pesticides throughout their working life (in hours) - both short (OR: 3.52; 95%CI: 1.25;9.87) and long (OR: 3.95; 95%CI: 1.54;10.14) - constituted risk factors for hematological neoplasms, when compared to those unexposed. We adjusted these measures for alcohol consumption and smoking, physical activity, income, education, and history of occupational exposure to chemicals. Conclusion: occupational exposure to pesticides is associated with hematological neoplasms regardless of lifestyle and socioeconomic status.

RESUMO Contexto: A doença inflamatória intestinal (DII) é uma doença imunomediada que inclui a doença de Crohn (DC) e a retocolite ulcerativa. A DC é caracterizada por um envolvimento intestinal transmural da boca ao ânus com sintomas recorrentes e remitentes que podem levar a danos intestinais progressivos e incapacidade ao longo do tempo. Objetivo: Orientar os tratamentos médicos mais seguros e eficazes de adultos com DC. Métodos: Este consenso foi desenvolvido por autores que representam gastroenterologistas e cirurgiões brasileiros especialistas em doenças colorretais (GEDIIB, Organização Brasileira de Doença de Crohn e Colite). Uma revisão sistemática das evidências mais recentes foi realizada para apoiar as recomendações/declarações. Todas as recomendações e declarações incluídas foram endossadas em um painel Delphi modificado pelas partes interessadas e especialistas em DII com uma concordância de pelo menos 80% ou mais. Resultados e conclusão: As recomendações médicas (intervenções farmacológicas e não farmacológicas) foram mapeadas de acordo com o estágio de tratamento e gravidade da doença em três domínios: manejo e tratamento (intervenções medicamentosas e cirúrgicas), critérios para avaliar a eficácia do tratamento médico, e acompanhamento/monitoramento do paciente após o tratamento inicial. O consenso é direcionado a clínicos gerais, gastroenterologistas e cirurgiões interessados em tratar e gerenciar adultos com DC e apoia a tomada de decisões de companhias de seguro de saúde, agências reguladoras e líderes ou administradores de instituições de saúde.

ABSTRACT Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an immune-mediated disorder that includes Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis. CD is characterized by a transmural intestinal involvement from the mouth to the anus with recurrent and remitting symptoms that can lead to progressive bowel damage and disability over time. Objective: To guide the safest and effective medical treatments of adults with CD. Methods: This consensus was developed by stakeholders representing Brazilian gastroenterologists and colorectal surgeons (Brazilian Organization for Crohn's disease and Colitis (GEDIIB)). A systematic review of the most recent evidence was conducted to support the recommendations/statements. All included recommendations and statements were endorsed in a modified Delphi panel by the stakeholders and experts in IBD with an agreement of at least 80% or greater consensus rate. Results and conclusion: The medical recommendations (pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions) were mapped according to the stage of treatment and severity of the disease in three domains: management and treatment (drug and surgical interventions), criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of medical treatment, and follow-up/patient monitoring after initial treatment. The consensus is targeted towards general practitioners, gastroenterologists, and surgeons interested in treating and managing adults with CD and supports the decision-making of health insurance companies, regulatory agencies, and health institutional leaders or administrators.
