Abstract The relationship between chromosomal and morphological variation in mammals is poorly understood. We analyzed the cranial size and shape variation in Ctenomys lami concerning to the geographic variation in their chromosome numbers. This subterranean rodent occurs in a narrow range of sand-dunes in the Coastal Plain of southern Brazil. This species presents a high karyotypic variation with diploid numbers varying from 2n = 54 to 2n = 58, involving the fission and fusion of chromosome pairs 1 and 2. Due to different chromosome rearrangement frequencies along their geographic distribution, four karyotypic blocks were proposed. This study, explored cranium shape and size variation in geographical, chromosomal polymorphism, and chromosome rearrangements contexts to test whether the four karyotypic blocks reflect morphologically distinct units. For this, we measured 89 craniums using geometric morphometrics and used uni and multivariate statistics to discriminate the predicted groups and test for an association among chromosomal and morphological variation. Our results show the size and shape of sexual dimorphism, with males larger than females, and support the existence of four karyotypic blocks for Ctenomys lami based on morphological variation. However, our results do not support a direct relationship between chromosomal and cranial morphological variation in C. lami.

A utilização de abrigos e do espaço pela lontra neotropical (Lontra longicaudis) (Olfers, 1818), foi estudada em um ambiente alterado e com presença humana no rio Caí, Triunfo, RS. A maioria dos sítios de marcação teve uso ocasional, e uma pequena percentagem teve uso frequente e intenso. A maioria das marcações de cheiro se encontrava no solo a uma média de distância de 1,65m da linha d'água. Ao todo foram encontrados sete abrigos na área de estudo, sendo que a lontra demonstrou preferência por abrigos específicos. O abrigo mais utilizado se constituía em escavações na barranca do rio sob as raízes de uma árvore, sendo este o de maiores dimensões e o único com galerias sob o solo. Os demais abrigos se encontravam no nível do solo e consistiam em emaranhados de galhos sob a vegetação, ou de raízes e/ou troncos caídos. O uso do espaço pela lontra esteve correlacionado à localização de suas tocas, ao grau de cobertura vegetal do local e parece ter sido pouco influenciado pelo distúrbio humano. Para medidas de conservação da lontra neotropical ressalta-se a importância da manutenção da mata ciliar e a proteção das áreas com a presença de abrigos.

The use of shelters and space by the Neotropical otter, Lontra longicaudis (Olfers, 1818), was studied in an environment formerly and presently altered by human presence in the Caí river, Triunfo, RS. Most marking sites were used occasionally, while a small percentage was frequently and intensely used. Most sprainting was observed on the soil, and sites were, on average, 1.65m away from the water level. In total, seven shelters were found in the study area and the otter showed preference for specific ones. The most used shelter was a holt built in the riverbank under the roots of a tree. This was the largest shelter and the only one presenting underground galleries. The other shelters were above ground, amongst heaps of branches beneath the vegetation, or under roots and/or fallen tree trunks. The use of space by the otter was correlated to the location of the shelters and to the level of vegetation cover, and seems to be poorly influenced by human disturbance. For the Neotropical otter conservancy we indicate the importance of maintaining the riparian buffers and the protection of the areas with the presence of shelters.

INTRODUÇÃO: A indicação de exercícios físicos como abordagem terapêutica após lesões nervosas periféricas, apesar de resultados clínicos favoráveis, ainda não é consenso na literatura pertinente. Objetivos: Este estudo buscou avaliar a interferência do exercício em roda motorizada no processo de regeneração nervosa periférica. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados 48 ratos Wistar divididos proporcionalmente em quatro grupos de 12 ratos cada (seis controles e seis experimentais). Após treinamento, os ratos foram submetidos à axonotmese do nervo ciático direito. Todos os grupos iniciaram o regime de exercícios diários 24 horas após a lesão, porém com durações diferenciadas (G1 por 28 dias; G2 por 21 dias, G3 por 14 dias e G4 por sete dias). O exercício teve tempo e velocidade ajustados de acordo com o tempo de tratamento para cada grupo. RESULTADOS: Por meio do cálculo do Índice Funcional do Ciático, os animais submetidos ao exercício apresentaram sinais de atraso na recuperação funcional da marcha, em comparação a animais controles. Na análise histológica dos nervos lesionados, observou-se que animais exercitados apresentaram sinais de preservação dos axônios no coto proximal e de degeneração no coto distal, e os animais exercitados por somente sete dias não apresentaram a mesma característica degenerativa no coto distal. A aplicação de exercícios ativos e sem carga em animais que sofreram axonotmese interfere negativamente no processo de recuperação funcional de alguns parâmetros da marcha. CONCLUSÃO: Apesar de o exercício ativo não ter interferido na manutenção da viabilidade neuronal nos sítios proximais à lesão, sua continuidade prejudicou a viabilidade dos cotos neurais distais, provável causa do atraso na recuperação funcional da marcha.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to investigate if exercise in motorized wheel can affect the process of peripheral nerve regeneration in a rat model of axonotmesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight Wistar rats were divided equally into four groups containing six experimental and six control subjects. After proper training, the rats underwent right sciatic nerve axonotmesis. All groups started the exercises, in a daily basis, 24 hours after nerve injury, but at different durations (28 days for G1, 21 days for G2, 14 days for G3 and seven days for G4). Both duration and speed of the exercises were gradually adjusted during the experiments. RESULTS: The Sciatic Function Index revealed that exercised animals showed clear signs of delayed functional gait recovery. The histological analysis of injured nerves revealed that exercised animals showed signs of proximal stump preservation and degenerative signs in the distal stump. In other hand, exercised animals during seven days only showed axonal preservation in the distal stump. CONCLUSION: Based on these results, we believe that active exercises should be avoided, at least during the peripheral nerve regeneration process, i.e., during first 21 days after axonotmesis."

Observou-se grande variabilidade anatômica no sincrânio de Otaria byronia (Blainville, 1820) e de Arctocephalus australis (Zimmerman, 1783), com correspondentes implicações na sistemática dos Otariidae. As principais diferenças observadas entre as duas espécies foram a largura do rostro, exposição (ou não) do etmóide na órbita, vacuidade palatino/pterigóide, extensão do maxilar, concavidade e forma do palato, tamanho/forma da órbita/processo supra-orbital, altura/forma do palato, tamanho/forma da órbita/processo supra-orbital, altura/forma do arco zigomático, forma do hâmulo pterigóide, tamanho de processos e cristas em geral, esfenóide e neurocrânio; presença ou não do canal vidiano e transverso; forma do pétreo e proporções do processo angular secundário. Enquanto algumas diferenças (etmóide) são bastante incomuns entre espécies contemporâneas pertencentes à mesma família, muitas outras são de natureza alométrica. Algumas diferenças são peramórficas: tamanho do crânio, do palato e das cristas (hipermórficos em O. byronia). Outros caracteres são pedomórficos em O. byronia: forame incisivo, processo maxilar do frontal e canais vidianos. As principais diferenças entre machos e fêmeas de O. byronia, e similiraridades entre os machos desta espécie e A. australis estão relacionadas a modificações no tempo/taxa de desenvolvimento. Alguns caracteres usualmente empregados na sistemática do grupo não foram corroborados, principalmente referentes à fossa naso-labialis, sutura jugo-temporal, meato acústico interno, entotimpânico e extensão do pétreo.

A high degree of anatomical variability in many structures of Otaria byronia (Blainville, 1820) and Arctocephalus australis (Zimmerman, 1783) was observed, which should yield serious implications to the systematics of Otariidae. The main differences observed between the two species were: the breadth of the rostrum, the exposure (or not) of the ethmoid in the orbit, the palatine/pterygoid vacuity, the extension of the maxilla, the concaveness and shape of the palate, the size/shape of the orbit/supra-orbital process, the height/shape of the zygomatic arch, the shape of the hamulus pterygoideus, the size of processes and crests, the proportions of the sphenoid and of neurocranium, the occurrence or not of the vidian and transverse canals, the relieves of the cranial fossae, and the size of secondary angular process. While some differences (ethmoid) are rather unusual between contemporary species belonging to the same family, many others are of allometric nature. Some differences are peramorfic: skull size, palate size and crests size (hypermorphic in O. byronia). Others caracters are pedomorphic in this species: incisive foramen, maxille process of the frontal and vidian channels. The main differences between males and females of O. byronia, and similitarities between de males of this species and A. australis are related to developmental modification in rate or in the timing too. Some characters usually used in the group's systematics were not corroborated, mostly those related to the naso-labialis fossa; zygomatic-temporal suture; internal acoustic meatus and entotimpanic.

Holymenia clavigera (Herbst) e Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Coreidae: Anisoscelini) são hemípteros pouco estudados e que ocorrem no sul do Brasil. Observações preliminares indicam alta coexistência no uso de suas plantas hospedeiras (passifloráceas). Adicionalmente, há uma acentuada semelhança morfológica dos ovos e ninfas. Objetiva-se caracterizar e comparar as suas trajetórias ontogenéticas através de curvas de crescimento e da alometria ontogenética multivariada, uma vez que a única diferença aparente entre as espécies é uma dilatação da tíbia no terceiro par de pernas de A. foliacea marginella. Por não apresentarem as formas das tíbias distintas visualmente nos primeiro e segundo ínstares, as diferenças entre as espécies foram quantificadas pela função spline de placas finas, com o relaxamento do algoritmo para pontos em contorno. Em todos os ínstares, H. clavigera foi significativamente maior que A foliacea marginella. As trajetórias ontogenéticas dos coreídeos foram estatisticamente diferentes, e as estruturas mensuradas apresentaram coeficientes alométricos significativamente distintos. A forma das tíbias de H. clavigera e A. foliacea marginella não foi estatisticamente diferente no primeiro, mas sim no segundo instar. No terceiro instar, a forma da tíbia desses coreídeos torna-se distinta a olho nu. Ou seja, embora sejam espécies com imaturos quase idênticos morfologicamente, seus padrões de crescimento e tamanho diferem de forma significativa. Assim, o tamanho apresenta-se como parâmetro útil para a diferenciação desses estágios.

Holymenia clavigera (Herbst) and Anisoscelis foliacea marginella (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Coreidae) are distributed in southern Brazil and belong to the poorly studied tribe Anisoscelini. Preliminary observations indicate an ample coexistence of these species in terms of host-plant use. There is also a strong similarity regarding egg and nymph morphology. We characterized and compared their ontogenetic trajectories by means of growth curves and multivariate ontogenetic allometry, since the only apparent difference between these species is a remarkable growth in the hind tibia of A. foliacea marginella. Because their hind tibia is similar in the early instars, the shape variation of this structure was quantified by the thin plate splines function with the relaxed algorithm for semilandmarks. H. clavigera was significantly larger than A. foliacea marginella in all stages. Their ontogenetic trajectories were significantly different, and the allometric vectors did not present a significant correlation. Hind tibia shape was not statistically different in the first instar, but was different in the second instar. In the third instar, this difference became visually apparent. Thus, although these bugs are almost morphologically identical in the immature stages, their growth patterns and general size are different. We found size to be a useful parameter for species differentiation at these stages.
