ABSTRACT Abiotic factors, such as saline stress, can happen in agricultural areas and can harm the metabolism of the plants. Studies that seek to evaluate the acting of P. peruviana L. under stress conditions are still incipient. Therefore, the objective was to evaluate the tolerance to salinity in plants of P. peruviana L. under different saline levels of irrigation water. The work was developed in the experimental farm of the Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, Campus Pombal, PB, from January to March 2017. Four saline concentrations of irrigation water were used (0.3; 1.2; 2.1; and 3.0 dS m-1) with five repetitions. At 60 days after the transplant, were evaluated the leaf area, intercellular CO2 concentration, stomatal conductance, transpiration, photosynthetic rate, intrinsic water use efficiency, instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, electrolyte extravasation, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoids. The results show that saline levels of irrigation water up to 3.0 dS m-1 did not provide physiological damages in plants of P. peruviana L. until 60 DAT, except for extravasation of electrolytes and chlorophyll a and b, characterizing the plant as tolerant to salinity until the studied level.

Resumo: A redução no tempo de execução do teste de tetrazólio é fundamental na tomada de decisão em pré e pós-colheita de sementes. Dessa maneira, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi estudar diferentes concentrações da solução do sal de tetrazólio, temperaturas e tempos de coloração, visando reduzir o tempo de avaliação da viabilidade de sementes de coentro pelo teste de tetrazólio. O estudo foi dividido em dois experimentos conduzidos de maneira independente, porém, sequencial. Em ambos os experimentos, as sementes foram avaliadas quanto ao teor de água, germinação e viabilidade pelo teste de tetrazólio. Utilizou-se delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Para o teste de tetrazólio, as sementes foram pré-condicionadas por imersão direta em água, por dezesseis horas a 20 °C. No experimento I, as sementes foram expostas a diferentes concentrações da solução do sal de tetrazólio (0,25; 0,5; 0,75; e 1,0%). No experimento II, foram testadas diferentes combinações de temperaturas (35; 40; e 45 °C) e tempos de coloração (três; quatro; cinco; e seis horas). Com base nos resultados obtidos, concluiu-se que a melhor coloração de sementes de coentro para a realização do teste de tetrazólio é obtida utilizando a concentração da solução do sal de tetrazólio de 0,5% por cinco horas a 40 °C.

Abstract: The reduction in the time to perform the tetrazolium test is critical in decision making at pre and post-harvest of seeds. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate different concentrations of the tetrazolium salt solution, temperatures, and staining times, to reduce the time for assessing the viability of coriander seeds by the tetrazolium test. The study was divided into two experiments conducted independently but sequentially. The seeds were evaluated for water content, germination, and viability in both experiments by the tetrazolium test. A completely randomized design was used, with four replications. For the tetrazolium test, the seeds were preconditioned by direct immersion in water for sixteen hours at 20 °C. In experiment I, the seeds were exposed to different concentrations of the tetrazolium salt solution (0.25; 0.5; 0.75; and 1.0%). In experiment II, different combinations of temperatures (35; 40; and 45 °C) and staining times (three, four, five, and six hours) were tested. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the best staining pattern of coriander seeds for performing the tetrazolium test is achieved by using the concentration of 0.5% tetrazolium salt solution for five hours at 40 °C.

RESUMO: Neste trabalho o objetivo foi avaliar a influência da presença de sementes esverdeadas de soja na sua qualidade fisiológica. Para tanto, foram utilizados seis lotes de sementes de soja da cultivar 5958RSF IPRO com 0, 0, 7, 8, 16 e 18% de sementes esverdeadas. Os testes realizados foram: primeira contagem de germinação, germinação, condutividade elétrica, emergência em campo, envelhecimento acelerado, índice de velocidade de emergência, tetrazólio, comprimento, massa seca e curva de crescimento de plântulas. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste de normalidade e análise de variância, seguido de comparações de médias, pelo teste de Tukey ao nível de 5% de probabilidade, com auxílio do programa estatístico Rbio. Os dados de crescimento foram submetidos à análise de regressão não-linear, utilizando o software SigmaPlot 12.0. Para as sementes esverdeadas, constata-se menor viabilidade e vigor devido a maior deterioração, proporcional a porcentagem de sementes com pigmentação verde nos cotilédones, de forma que a presença de clorofila reduz a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de soja.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this research was to assess the manner in which the presence of green soybean seeds affects their physiological quality. In this study, six lots of soybean seeds of cultivar 5958RSF IPRO with 0, 0, 7, 8, 16 and 18% of green seeds were examined. The tests done included the first germination count, germination, electrical conductivity, field emergence, accelerated aging, emergence speed index, Tetrazolium, length, dry mass and seedling growth curve. Results were tested employing the normality test and analysis of variance, and the means were compared by the Tukey test at 5% probability level, employing the Rbio statistical program. Growth data were analyzed by the nonlinear regression analytical method, using the SigmaPlot 12.0 software. The viability and vigor of the greenish seeds were confirmed to reveal higher deterioration, proportional to the percentage of seeds in which the cotyledons had green pigmentation, indicating that the presence of chlorophyll caused the physiological quality of the soybean seeds to decrease.

RESUMO O gergelim é considerado uma cultura alternativa para pequenos e médios agricultores da região Nordeste. No entanto, nas condições do semiárido nordestino, a escassez de água de boa qualidade utilizada na irrigação pode refletir em redução na qualidade do produto final. Objetivou-se avaliar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de gergelim produzidas sob níveis de salinidade do solo. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 × 5, com três repetições, correspondendo a cultivares de gergelim (BRS Seda, BRS G2, BRS G3, BRS G4 e BRS Anahi) e níveis de salinidade do solo com as seguintes condutividades elétricas: 0,6 dS m-1; 1,2 dS m-1; 1,8 dS m-1; 2,4 dS m-1; e 3,0 dS m-1. Para a caracterização da qualidade fisiológica, foram realizados testes de germinação, primeira contagem de germinação, índice de velocidade de germinação, comprimento de radícula, condutividade elétrica das sementes, emergência, índice de velocidade de emergência e massa seca de plântulas. BRS Seda, BRS G2 e BRS G3, cultivadas sob níveis salinos, apresentam sementes com melhores qualidades fisiológicas, demonstrando maior tolerância a condições de estresse salino. BRS Seda e BRS G2 toleram níveis salinos de até 2,4 dS m-1, enquanto BRS G3 tolera até 1,8 dS m-1. BRS G4 e BRS Anahi têm a qualidade fisiológica de suas sementes comprometida com o aumento da salinidade do solo, durante sua produção.

ABSTRACT Sesame is considered an alternative crop for small and medium farmers in the Brazilian Northeast region. However, under the conditions of the northeastern semi-arid region, the scarcity of good quality water for irrigation may lead to a reduction in the quality of the final product. This study aimed to evaluate the physiological quality of sesame seeds produced under levels of soil salinity. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 5 × 5 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to sesame cultivars (BRS Seda, BRS G2, BRS G3, BRS G4 and BRS Anahi) and soil salinity levels with the following values for electrical conductivity: 0.6 dS m-1, 1.2 dS m-1, 1.8 dS m-1, 2.4 dS m-1 and 3.0 dS m-1. The physiological quality was characterized based on tests of germination, first germination count, germination speed index, radicle length, seed electrical conductivity, emergence, emergence speed index and seedling dry matter. BRS Seda, BRS G2 and BRS G3, cultivated under salinity levels, present seeds with a better physiological quality, demonstrating a higher tolerance to salt stress conditions. The BRS Seda and BRS G2 cultivars tolerate salinity levels of up to 2.4 dS m-1, while BRS G3 tolerates levels of up to 1.8 dS m-1. BRS G4 and BRS Anahi have the physiological quality of their seeds compromised by the increase in the soil salinity, during their production.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar a eficiência de diferentes métodos de remoção da sarcotesta de sementes de romã e seus efeitos sobre a qualidade fisiológica. Foram empregados os seguintes tratamentos: T1 - fricção em areia grossa sobre peneira; T2 e T3 - imersão em ácido sulfúrico (98%) por 30 minutos e lavagem em água corrente, com e sem vernalização, durante 48 horas em geladeira a 4ºC, respectivamente; T4 e T5 - fermentação natural por 72 horas, com sementes submetidas e não submetidas à secagem à sombra, durante sete dias, respectivamente, e T6 - sementes com sarcotesta intacta, como testemunha. Utilizou-se do delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com dados submetidos à análise de variância, e as médias, comparadas pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. Observou-se superioridade nos valores de germinação e emergência para os tratamentos submetidos à fermentação, associando isto à possível sensibilidade à dessecação da semente e dormência, comprovado pelo teste de envelhecimento acelerado.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of different removal methods of sarcotesta and their effects on the physiological quality of the seeds. We applied the following treatments: T1 - friction in coarse sand on a sieve; T2 and T3 - immersion in sulfuric acid (98%) for 30 minutes and washing in water, with and without a vernalization for 48 hours in a refrigerator at 4 °C, respectively; T4 and T5 - natural fermentation for 72 hours, with seeds submitted and not submitted to drying in shade for seven days; and T6 - seeds with intact sarcotesta as control. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design. For the analysis of the viability and vigor, we used the germination test, germination on first count, germination speed index, accelerated aging, emergence test, emergence speed index, number of leaves, plant height, stem diameter, and root length. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey test. Seeds submitted to fermentation showed the highest germination and emergence values. However, it was not statistically different from the control, probably due to the sensitivity to desiccation or seed dormancy, which was shown in the accelerated aging test.
