The use of nanocomposite coatings on carbon steel has been very promising. In this paper, the formation mechanism of multilayer of Ni-Co/SiC nanocomposite coating electrodeposited in API 5L X80 steel was investigated. The coatings were obtained by galvanostatic deposition technique using a single bath and a single cathodic current density value. The results showed a variation in morphology and chemical composition of the coatings both on the surface and along the cross-section at all time conditions tested, confirming the functional gradient of the coating. The formation of the Ni-Co/SiC nanocomposite coating occurred through the multilayer deposition mechanism, with compositions mostly alternated between Ni and Co. The preferred orientation of the plane (220) and phase structure FCC remained constant on the surface of all the obtained samples. It was observed that the coating became more compact in the region located closer to the substrate, where an increase in micro-hardness was observed.

Abstract Biocorrosion is the main process that causes pipeline damages and losses in the oil industry. The objective of this work was to investigate the influence of biofilm forming microorganisms on the biocorrosion of X80 steel exposed in produced water through microbiological characterization, film and biofilm analysis by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, weight loss and surface analysis by laser confocal microscopy. Changes in produced water after 360 days were attributed to planktonic cells, temperature conditions, contact with air, photo-oxidation, biodegradation, and seasonality. The total aerobic bacteria presented sessile cell concentration of 7.39 x 104 CFU/cm2, while the other investigated groups showed lower concentrations. The micrography of the film showed salt crystals, whereas in the biofilm microorganisms, exopolysaccharides and corrosion products were observed. Weight loss after 360 days for the abiotic and biotic systems was 0.0222 g/cm2 and 0.3039 g/cm2, respectively, showing that microorganisms accentuated the corrosion of X80 steel.

The production of fatty acid methyl esther (FAME) via transesterification was studied, assessing the influence of CaO heterogeneous catalysts obtained from four different fishery residues: sururu, crab, clam and mussel. Characterization and properties of the residues were obtained via thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, chemical composition and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Catalytic activities and reaction kinetics of FAME synthesis from the transesterification of soybean oil were performed. FAME yield was determined by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). A higher efficiency and reaction rate were observed for the catalysts obtained from the sururu residues with 93.7% FAME yield after 3.5 h of reaction at the first usage, reducing only to 91.0% after four consecutive cycles of reuse. The best activities were assigned to the presence of SrO, to smaller particle size, higher pore volumes and the higher Ca leaching, yielding Ca-diglyceroxide which is an important active phase for transesterification.

Como a biometria dos frutos e sementes fornece informações para a conservação e exploração da espécie, de variabilidade entre indivíduos numa determinada área e permite comparações de uma mesma espécie que ocorre em localidades geográficas diferentes, objetivou-se, neste trabalho, caracterizar biometricamente frutos e sementes de Lafoensia pacari, Alibertia edulis e Genipa americana. Para isso foram selecionados aleatoriamente 60 frutos e número igual de sementes, os quais foram medidos com o auxílio de craveira digital. Nos frutos de L. pacari foram medidos comprimento, largura e espessura e nos de A. edulis e G. americana diâmetro transversal e longitudinal; nas sementes determinou-se comprimento, largura e espessura. Também foram determinados o número de sementes por fruto e a massa da matéria fresca dos frutos e sementes. O número de sementes por fruto e a massa da matéria fresca das sementes são as características biométricas com maior variação. O coeficiente de assimetria é negativo para a maioria das características biométricas do fruto e positivo para a maioria das características das sementes. O coeficiente de curtose, para todas as características biométricas dos frutos e sementes apresenta valor menor que 3, exceto para comprimento do fruto de L. pacari.

Biometry of fruits and seeds provides information for conservation and species exploitation, the variability among individuals in a determined area and allows comparisons on the same species occurring in different geographic locations. Thus, the aim of this study was to characterize biometrically fruits and seeds from Lafoensia pacari, Alibertia edulis and Genipa americana. Sixty fruits and an equal number of seeds were randomly selected and measured with the aid of digital calipers. The length, width and thickness of L. pacari fruits was measured, while the transverse and longitudinal diameter was measured in A. edulis and G. americana; in the seeds, the length, width and thickness were measured. It was also determined the number of seeds per fruit and fresh matter mass of fruits and seeds. The number of seeds per fruit and fresh matter mass of seeds are the biometric characteristics with greater variation. The asymmetry coefficient is negative for most fruit biometric characteristics and positive for most seeds characteristics. The kurtosis coefficient, for all biometric characteristics of fruits and seeds, shows value less than three, except for fruit length of L. pacari.

CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: A medida da pressão inspiratória nasal, conhecida como sniff teste, desenvolvida como um novo teste de força muscular inspiratória, utilizada principalmente em doenças neuromusculares, é de fácil realização e não invasiva. Apesar da importância clínica da avaliação da pressão inspiratória nasal, não existe um instrumento nacional disponível para realizá-la. OBJETIVOS: Comparar os manovacuômetros eletrônicos nacional e importado para a avaliação da pressão inspiratória nasal em pessoas saudáveis. MÉTODOS: Foram avaliados 18 voluntários saudáveis (idade 21,4±2,8 anos, IMC 23,4±2,5 Kg/m² , CVF 102,1±10,3%pred, VEF1 98,4±1%pred) por meio de duas medidas de pressão inspiratória nasal em dois equipamentos diferentes: um nacional e outro importado. Todos os sujeitos realizaram a manobra no mesmo horário do dia, em dias ocasionais, sendo a ordem determinada aleatoriamente. Para análise estatística, foi utilizado o teste t pareado, a correlação de Pearson e o Bland-Altman com nível de significância de 5%. RESULTADOS: As médias encontradas durante as duas medidas das pressões nasais foram de 125±42,4 cmH2O para o aparelho importado e de 131,7±28,7 cmH2O para o nacional. A análise de Pearson demonstrou uma correlação significativa entre as médias, com um coeficiente r=0,63. Os valores médios não apresentaram diferenças significativas pelo teste t pareado (p>0,05). Na análise de Bland-Altman, encontrou-se um BIAS igual a 7 cm H2O, desvio-padrão de 32,9 cmH2O para o DP e um intervalo de confiança de -57,5 cmH2O até 71,5 cmH2O. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados encontrados sugerem que o manovacuômetro eletrônico nacional é viável e seguro para realização do sniff teste em sujeitos saudáveis.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of nasal inspiratory pressure, known as the sniff test, was developed as a new test of inspiratory muscle strength, mainly used in neuromuscular conditions. The test is easy to be performed and noninvasive. Despite the clinical importance of assessment of nasal inspiratory pressure a national equipment is not available to assess it. OBJECTIVES: To compare a national with a foreign manovacuometer in assessing the nasal inspiratory pressure (sniff test) in healthy subjects. METHODS: 18 subjects were evaluated (age 21.44±2.8 years, BMI 23.4±2.5 kg/m² , FVC 102.1±10.3% pred, FEV1 98.4±1% pred). We performed two measures of nasal inspiratory pressure using two different manovacuometer: a national and a foreign. All subjects performed the tests at the same time of day, in different days being the order of the testes established randomly. It was used the paired t test, Pearson correlation and the Bland-Altman plots for statistical analysis considering a 5% significance level. RESULTS: The averages observed for the two measures of nasal pressures were 125±42.4 cmH2O for the foreign equipment, and 131.7±28.7 cmH2O for the national equipment. The Pearson correlation showed significant correlation between the means with a coefficient of r=0.63. The t test showed no significant differences between both measurements (p>0,05). The BIAS±SD found in Bland-Altman plot analysis was 7 cmH2O with limits of agreement between -57.5 cmH2O and 71.5 cmH2O. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the national electronic device is feasible and safe to the sniff test measurement in healthy subjects.

Every year, Brazil receives large flocks of nearly 40 migratory shorebirds species. The accumulation of body fat and nutrients during the summer is necessary for the long return flights of these birds and is fundamental for feather moulting and the change of their plumage. We present here an examination of the relationship between body mass and plumage change in Arenaria interpres (Linnaeus, 1758), one of those birds, over time during its wintering period on the Brazilian coast. We analyzed information collected at five traditional stopover sites along the Brazilian coast, between 1997 and 2007. During the month of September, individuals with intermediate or breeding plumage had smaller body masses as compared to other months. From October to December, adult individuals were only observed with eclipse plumage and had average body masses of approximately 100 g. In March, individuals with intermediate, eclipse and breeding plumages were recorded, but their average body mass remained at approximately 100 g. In April and May the numbers of individuals with breeding or intermediate plumage increased, and they showed significant increases in body mass at a rate of approximately 1.5 and 2.3 g per day, in the north-northeastern and south coast, respectively, leading to an average mass of 124 and 143g in these months. That is suggested to be the departure mass of A. interpres in the Brazilian north-northeastern and south coast, respectively, when starting the migration to the breeding sites.

This paper presents the synthesis of the coordination polymers ∞[Ln(DPA)(HDPA)] (DPA=2,6-pyridinedicarboxylate; Ln= Tb and Gd), their structural and spectroscopic properties. The structural study reveals that the ∞[Ln(DPA)(HDPA)] has a single Ln+3 ion coordinated with two H2DPA ligands in tridentade coordination mode, while two others H2DPA establish a syn-bridge with a symmetry-related Ln3+, forming a two-dimensional structure. The spectroscopic studies show that ∞[Tb(DPA)(HDPA)] compound has high quantum yield (q x≈ 50.0%), due to the large contribution of radiative decay rate. Moreover triplet level is localized sufficiently over the emitter level 5D4 of theTb3+ ion, avoiding a retrotransference process between these states.

Gene mutations that codify podocytary proteins have been identified, and there are evidences that suggest that the primary defect of their idiopathic nephrotic syndrome with minimal injury may be in the podocyte. The kinship degree of 12 patients with nephrotic syndrome (siblings or parents) was analyzed, and the main clinical and histological characteristics were stressed. Among the 334 nephrotyic children studied, we found 12, corresponding to 7 families, with corticosensitive nephrotic syndrome (3.6 %). There was a prevalence of males (ratio 2:1). In 4 families without history of the disease there were 9 children affected, two of them, identical twins. In the other three families, two of the mothers and one father, had suffered from the disease. All the children responded to the treatment with steroids, and in the three patients with similar history, the evolution was similar to that of their parents. The nephrotic syndrome with minimal injury and good response to steroids observed in the families, may not be a casual event and its clinical appearance may be related to some genetic mutation conditioning it. To clearly define this aspect, further research on this topic is needed.

Se han identificado mutaciones en genes que codifican proteínas podocitarias y existen evidencias que sugieren que el defecto primario del síndrome nefrótico idiopático con lesión mínima pueda estar en el podocito. Se analizó el grado de parentesco de 12 pacientes con síndrome nefrótico (hermanos o padres) y se destacaron las principales características clínicas e histológicas. Entre los 334 niños nefróticos estudiados encontramos a 12, correspondientes a 7 familias, con síndrome nefrótico córtico-sensible (3,6 %). Hubo predomino del sexo masculino (relación 2:1). En 4 familias sin antecedentes de la enfermedad hallamos a 9 niños afectados, dos de ellos, gemelos idénticos. En las tres familias restantes, dos de las madres y un padre, habían padecido la enfermedad. Todos los niños respondieron al tratamiento con esteroides y en los tres pacientes con estos antecedentes, la evolución fue similar a la de sus progenitores. El síndrome nefrótico con lesión mínima y buena respuesta a los esteroides que se presenta en las familias puede no ser un hecho casual y su aparición clínica puede estar relacionada con alguna mutación genética que la condicione. Para definir claramente este aspecto se necesitan más investigaciones sobre el tema.

Com este trabalho, objetivou-se avaliar a exposição do aplicador à calda de agrotóxico, durante pulverização na cultura da videira, com 4 diferentes pulverizadores. Os equipamentos avaliados foram um pulverizador semi-estacionário típico, um pulverizador de barras adaptado a uma barra semi-circular com os bicos voltados para cima, um turbopulverizador marca Hatsuta modelo café, com sistema de turbina adaptado para utilização na cultura da uva, e um turbo-pulverizador marca KO, modelo Jales, regulados pelos produtores. Para avaliação da exposição dérmica potencial (EDP) amostradores foram distribuídos sobre 22 partes do corpo do aplicador, que pulverizou uma calda contendo 3000 ppm do cátion Cu+2 durante 35 a 40 min. Em laboratório o Cu+2 foi recuperado e quantificado e a exposição calculada em função da concentração do cátion na calda. O pulverizador semi-estacionário proporcionou a maior EDP, seguido pela barra, turbo adaptado e pelo turbo original. A porcentagem do volume pulverizado que atinge o corpo do aplicador num mesmo período de tempo, foi mais que 89 vezes maior para o semi-estacionário, quando comparado ao turbo Jales e à barra adaptada, e 44 vezes maior quando comparado ao turbo adaptado. As áreas mais expostas do corpo foram mãos, cabeça e dorso para os tratorizados e a EDP foi alta em praticamente todas as regiões do corpo com o semi-estacionário. Aspectos da EDP em função do equipamento e da forma de utilização são discutidos.

The aim of present study was to evaluate the dermal exposure of pesticide applicator, during spraying in grapes crop, with 4 different sprayers. The equipments utilized were a typical semi-stationery sprayer, a boom sprayer adapted with a semi-circulate boom with the nozzle returned upward, an airblast sprayer utilized in coffee crop with turbine system adapted for grapes and a original airblast sprayer for grapes (KO, model Jales), regulated by the workers. For assessment of potential dermal exposure (PDE) of spray man, 22 sampling pads were attached to body parts of spray man applying a solution containing 3000 ppm of Cu+2 during 35 to 40 min. Copper was extracted and quantified in laboratory and the exposure was calculated considering the original concentration of the spray solution. The semi-stationery sprayer provided largest PDE, followed by the adapted boom sprayer, adapted airblast and original airblast sprayer. The carrier percentage reaching the spray man body in the same period of time was more than 89 times higher for semi-stationery when compared with the original airblast and the adapted boom and 44 times higher compared to the adapted airblast sprayer. The most exposed areas of the spray man body were the hands, head and back for sprayers adapted to tractor, and PDE was high in practically all the areas of the body with the semi-stationery equipment. Aspects of PDE related to equipment and the form of their use are discussed.

Uma análise estrutural dos ovidutos de Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) em diferentes fases de ingurgitamento permitiu detectar que eles estão constituídos basicamente por dois cilindros celulares, um interno e outro externo; entre os quais foram encontrados diferentes tipos celulares. Fêmeas copuladas e em processo ativo de ingurgitamento mostram variações típicas ao longo do cilindro interno podendo ser definidas três regiões: anterior, anelar e de transição. Com base em tal regionalização, hipóteses sobre onde e como ocorre a fecundação, processo ainda não elucidado até o momento para ácaros, são levantadas.

The structural analysis of oviducts in Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) in different stages of ingurgitation has indicated that they are constituted primarily of an internal cylinder and an external cylinder with different cell types being found between them. Copulated females in active ingurgitation process show typical variations along the internal cylinder, and three regions can be defined: anterior, ring-like and transitional. Based on such regionalization, hypotheses were raised about where and how fertilization takes place, a process yet to be clarified for the acari.
