Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the contribution of oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories (OMPLs) in Brazilian public universities to the diagnosis of lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). A cross-sectional study was performed using biopsy records from a consortium of sixteen public OMPLs from all regions of Brazil (North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South). Clinical and demographic data of patients diagnosed with lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCC between 2010 and 2019 were collected from the patients’ histopathological records. Of the 120,010 oral and maxillofacial biopsies (2010-2019), 6.9% (8,321 cases) were diagnosed as lip (0.8%, 951 cases), oral cavity (4.9%, 5,971 cases), and oropharyngeal (1.2%, 1,399 cases) SCCs. Most cases were from Brazil’s Southeast (64.5%), where six of the OMPLs analyzed are located. The predominant profile of patients with lip and oral cavity SCC was Caucasian men, with a mean age over 60 years, low schooling level, and a previous history of heavy tobacco consumption. In the oropharyngeal group, the majority were non-Caucasian men, with a mean age under 60 years, had a low education level, and were former/current tobacco and alcohol users. According to data from the Brazilian National Cancer Institute, approximately 9.9% of the total lip, oral cavity, and oropharyngeal SCCs reported over the last decade in Brazil may have been diagnosed at the OMPLs included in the current study. Therefore, this data confirms the contribution of public OMPLs with respect to the important diagnostic support they provide to the oral healthcare services extended by the Brazilian Public Health System.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Citizen science favors social participation in scientific processes. This article seeks to investigate the Citizen Laboratories of the Federal Universities of Brazil from the perspective of citizen science. Objective: To map the citizen laboratories subsidized by Federal Universities of Brazil and to analyze their scope of action, in order to understand their role in terms of social innovation and how they promote the participation of citizen scientists. Methodology: It consisted of a survey of the Federal Universities of Brazil through the institutional site of the Ministry of Education, where sixty-four institutions were identified. The next step was to search the institutional site of each one of the mapped Federal Universities using pre-determined search expressions. The parameters used to frame the initiatives as citizen labs were: 1) openness for social participation; 2) possibility to explore and appropriate technologies aimed at social interests; 3) focus on learning; 4) targeting the promotion of social innovations. Results: The research enabled the identification of ten citizen labs in Brazilian Federal Universities, which are aligned with relevant social issues and generate benefits in terms of innovations that can be socially shared. Conclusion: The citizen labs analyzed enable an approximation between the University and society in general, but do not detail how the social contributions of citizen scientists are incorporated into their actions. Initiatives in this direction are still incipient in the country, but they have the potential to boost citizen participation in scientific research.

RESUMO Introdução: A ciência cidadã favorece a participação social em processos científicos. Este artigo busca investigar os Laboratórios Cidadãos das Universidades Federais do Brasil a partir da perspectiva da ciência cidadã. Objetivo: Mapear os laboratórios cidadãos subsidiados por Universidades Federais do Brasil e analisar o seu escopo de atuação, no intuito de entender o seu papel em termos de inovação social e como promovem a participação dos cidadãos cientistas. Metodologia: Consistiu no levantamento das Universidades Federais do Brasil por meio do site institucional Ministério da Educação, onde foram identificadas sessenta e quatro instituições. A próxima etapa contemplou buscas no site institucional de cada uma das Universidades Federais mapeadas a partir de expressões de busca pré-determinadas. Os parâmetros utilizados para enquadrar as iniciativas como laboratórios cidadãos foram: 1) abertura para a participação social; 2) possibilidade de explorar e se apropriar de tecnologias voltadas para os interesses sociais; 3) foco na aprendizagem; 4) direcionamento para a promoção de inovações sociais. Resultados: A pesquisa possibilitou identificar onze laboratórios cidadãos em Universidades Federais brasileiras, que estão alinhados com temas sociais relevantes e geram benefícios em termos de inovações que podem ser socialmente partilhadas. Conclusão: Os laboratórios cidadãos analisados possibilitam uma aproximação entre a Universidade e a sociedade em geral, mas não detalham como as contribuições sociais dos cidadãos cientistas são incorporadas em suas ações. As iniciativas nesta direção ainda são incipientes no país, mas possuem potencial para impulsionar a participação cidadã na pesquisa científica.

Abstract Introduction/objectives: Clinical evidence of skeletal muscle involvement is not uncommon in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Because of the poor understanding of signaling pathways involved in SLE muscle wasting, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of vitamin D supplementation on skeletal muscle in mice with pristane-induced lupus. Methods: Balb/c mice with lupus-like disease induced by pristane injection were randomized into three groups: pristane-induced lupus (PIL; n = 10), pristane-induced lupus + vitamin D supplementation (PIL + VD; n = 10) and healthy controls (CO; n = 8). Physical function was evaluated on days 0, 60, 120 and 180. The tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles were collected to evaluate myofiber cross-sectional area (CSA) and protein expression. Results: The PIL + VD group showed lower muscle strength compared to the CO and PIL groups at different time points. PIL mice showed similar myofiber CSA compared to CO and PIL + VD groups. LC3-II expression was higher in PIL compared to CO and PIL + VD groups. MyoD expression was higher in PIL mice compared to PIL + VD, while myostatin expression was higher in PIL + VD than PIL group. Myogenin expression levels were decreased in the PIL + VD group compared with the CO group. The Akt, p62 and MuRF expressions and mobility assessment showed no significance. Conclusions: Changes in skeletal muscle in PIL model happen before CSA reduction, possibly due to autophagy degradation, and treatment with Vitamin D has a impact on physical function by decreasing muscle strength and time of fatigue.. Vitamin D supplementation has a potential role modulating physical parameters and signaling pathways in muscle during pristane-induced lupus model.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o perfil de formação e produção científica do fisioterapeuta pesquisador brasileiro. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, realizado por meio de levantamento dos currículos profissionais cadastrados na Plataforma Lattes do Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq), atualizados nos últimos 5 anos. As principais variáveis analisadas foram sexo, distribuição dos fisioterapeutas pelo Brasil, tipo de instituição de graduação, local de atuação, formação complementar, produções científicas e participação em eventos. Foram encontrados 47.741 currículos, dos quais 17.864 estavam dentro dos critérios de seleção da pesquisa e foram analisados. Predominaram fisioterapeutas do sexo feminino (75,5%) e da região Sudeste (35%). A maioria é graduada em instituições privadas (75%), realizou pós-graduação lato sensu (61,4%) e trabalhou em universidades (30%). Existem diferenças entre os sexos com relação às produções, os eventos e a formação complementar, com o melhor desempenho do sexo masculino (p<0,001) - os graduados em instituição pública têm mais produções, eventos e atividades de formação complementar (p<0,001). Os profissionais graduados em instituições privadas, porém, realizam mais cursos de pós-graduação lato sensu (p=0,05). Conclui-se, portanto, que a maioria dos fisioterapeutas pesquisadores do Brasil é do sexo feminino, graduada na região Sudeste, formada em instituições privadas, realizou pós-graduação lato sensu e trabalha em universidades. Apesar da maioria feminina, os profissionais do sexo masculino e os formados em instituições públicas apresentam maior quantidade de produções, participações em eventos e formações complementares.

ABSTRACT To evaluate the academic background and scientific productions’ profile of researcher physiotherapists in Brazil. The study was cross-sectional in design and performed by analyzing the professional resumes that have been updated within the last 5 years in the Lattes Platform of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). The main variables analyzed were sex, geographical distribution, kind of undergraduate institution, working location, complementary training, scientific production, and participation in events. The analysis was carried out on 17,864 curricula which were within the selection criteria, out of a total of 47,741. There was a predominance of female therapists (75.5%) and therapists from the southeast region (35%). Most have completed their undergraduate degree in private institutions (75%) and graduate programs (61.4%), and work at universities (30%). Males perform better (p<0.001) in scientific productions, participation in events, and complementary training activities. Graduates from public institutions have more scientific productions, events, and complementary training activities (p<0.001). However, professionals that have completed their undergraduate degree in private institutions do graduate programs the most (p=0.05). Most researcher physical therapists in Brazil are females, have completed their undergraduate degrees in the Southeast region and in private institutions, have completed graduate programs and work in universities. Despite the female predominance, male professionals and those therapists who have completed their undergraduate degree from public institutions have a greater amount of scientific productions, participation in events and complementary degrees.

RESUMO A Dissecção da Artéria Vertebral (DAV) é quadro raro que pode ser causado por movimentação de grande amplitude do pescoço, que lesiona a parede desse vaso, podendo provocar isquemia no cerebelo. Apresentamos um homem de 37 anos, com hérnia de disco e rinossinusite alérgica que lhe causava crises de espirros em salva (CE). Após uma dessas crises com ricocheteamento da cabeça, apresentou desalinhamento de C3 com dor local. Vinte e um dias depois, acometido por nova crise, apresentou cefaleia temporal esquerda, nistagmo e vertigem. Decorridos 3 dias, o paciente foi submetido a Ressoânncia Magnética (RM), que identificou 2 regiões de isquemia cerebelar e enchimento comprometido da artéria vertebral direita. Após 2 dias, foram feitos Angiotomografia Computadorizada (Angio TC), que constatou DAV direita com trombo local, sem sinais aneurismáticos, e Doppler Transcraniano, que não indicou aumento do fluxo sanguíneo dessa artéria. O tratamento sugerido envolvia administração de anticoagulante Apixabana 5mg, 12/12h, por 3 meses, até que o quadro fosse reavaliado com novas Angio TC e RM. Foi recomendado que o paciente ficasse afastado do trabalho por 1 mês e de exercícios físicos intensos por 3 meses, porém devido a contratempos, esses prazos foram prorrogados até nova consulta, 4 meses após a primeira. Os novos exames não apresentaram alterações, indicando que o quadro estava estável. Esse caso tem como objetivo indicar as possíveis investigações do diagnóstico e opções terapêuticas da rara associação entre DAV com infarto cerebelar em caso bem documentado.

SUMMARY Vertebral Artery Dissection (VAD) is a rare condition that can be caused by a wide amplitude of neck movement, which injures the vessel wall and can cause ischemia in the cerebellum. We present a 37-year-old man with herniated lumbar disc and allergic rhinosinusitis, which caused sneezing spells. After one of these bouts with a ricochet of the head, he presented C3 misalignment with local pain. Twenty-one days later, affected by a new crisis, he presented left temporal headache, nystagmus, and vertigo. After 3 days, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) identified 2 regions of cerebellar ischemia and filling failure of the right vertebral artery. After 2 days, Computed Angiotomography (CT Angiography) was performed and showed right VAD with a local thrombus, without aneurysmal signs. Transcranial Doppler did not indicate an increase in blood flow from this artery. The suggested treatment involved administration of anticoagulant Apixabana 5mg, 12/12h, for 3 months, until the condition was reevaluated with new Angio CT and MRI. It was recommended that the patient was released from work for 1 month and forbidden from doing intense physical exercises for 3 months; however, due to setbacks, these deadlines were extended until a new appointment, 4 months after the first visit. The new tests showed no changes, indicating that the condition was stable. This case aims to indicate the possible investigations of the diagnosis and therapeutic options of the rare association between VAD with cerebellar infarction in a well-documented case.

RESUMO O compósito WC-10%Co também conhecido como Metal Duro de Carbeto de Tungstênico (WC) com Cobalto (Co) é um dos materiais mais produzidas pela indústria fabricante de metal duro, entretanto busca-se o melhor entendimento sobre o efeito de parâmetros de processo sobre as suas características estruturais, especialmente no que diz respeito à formação de fases metaestáveis – fases η. Neste trabalho, usamos o método de Rietveld aliado a difração de raios X (DRX), a microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) e o Brunauer – Emmett – Teller (BET) para investigar a estrutura das matérias-primas utilizadas na produção de metal duro. Os tamanhos das partículas assim como as morfologias identificadas para os pós de WC e Co são reflexos do seu processo de fabricação que, introduzem tensões residuais para o pó de WC, a baixa cristalinidade e significante parcela de amorfo para o pó de Co. Estas características foram identificadas com a difração de raios X em comparação com o padrão de difração obtido e os bancos de dados cristalográficos. Após o processo de mistura dos pós foram quantificadas as fases e identificados os efeitos desse processo sobre as células unitárias de cada fase. Este trabalho mostra que a rota de caracterização empregada, com o uso do método de Rietveld, é eficiente para analisar a estrutura desses materiais durante seu processamento. Foi possível observar que o processo de mistura utilizando equipamento de moagem de alta energia promove alteração na densidade das células unitárias do WC “empurrando” átomos de Co para dentro de sua estrutura. Isso pode vir a acelerar o processo de dissolução de grande parte das partículas de WC durante a sinterização, contribuindo para a formação acentuada das fases metaestáveis eta – η, prejudicando o equilíbrio entre as propriedades mecânicas de dureza e tenacidade à fratura tornando a ferramenta ou peça muito dura e pouco tenaz.

ABSTRACT The composite WC-10% Co is one of the materials most produced by the hardmetal fabrication industry. However, a better understanding of the effect of process parameters on their structural characteristics is sought, especially with respect to the formation of metastable phases - η. In this work, we used the Rietveld Method with X - Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer - Emmett - Teller (BET) to investigate the structure of the raw materials used in the production of hardmetal. The particle sizes as well as the identified morphologies for the WC and Co powders are reflections of their manufacturing process, which introduce residual stresses for WC powder, low crystallinity and a significant amorphous portion for Co powder. These characteristics were identified with XRD in comparison to the obtained diffraction pattern and crystallographic databases. After the powder mixing process, the phases were quantified and the effects of this process were identified on the unit cells of each phase. This work shows that the characterization route using the Rietveld Method is efficient to analyze the structure of these materials during their processing. It was observed that the mixing process using high energy milling equipment promotes a change in the density of WC unit cells by “pushing” Co atoms into their structure. This may accelerate the dissolution process of most WC particles during sintering. And contribute to the accentuated formation of metastable phases eta – η, damaging the balance between the mechanical properties of hardness and fracture toughness making the tool or piece very hard and not very tenacious.

Resumo O estudo teve como objetivo investigar o custo humano físico, cognitivo e social no trabalho do agente comunitário de saúde (ACS) e sua relação com possíveis danos à sua saúde. Estudo transversal, descritivo, quantitativo-qualitativo, com 251 ACS de municípios da 13ª Coordenadoria Regional de Saúde-RS. Os dados foram coletados em entrevistas, questionário sociodemográfico e “Inventário de Trabalho e Riscos de Adoecimento” (ITRA). Utilizaram-se para a análise dos dados a média dos escores fatoriais e a Análise de Conteúdo. Todos os fatores relativos aos custos humanos apresentaram avaliação moderada/crítica. Quanto aos danos à saúde, os danos físicos receberam avaliação moderada/crítica, sendo os demais avaliados como positivos/suportáveis. Apesar disso, foi relatada a presença de transtornos psíquicos, em um discurso de banalização do sofrimento advindo do trabalho.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the physical, cognitive and social human costs in the work of the community health worker (CHW) and its relation with possible damages to their health. Descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative and qualitative study, conducted with 251 CHW’s in municipalities from the 13th Regional Coordination of Health Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Data were collected through interviews, sociodemographic questionnaire and “Inventory of Work and Illness Risks” (ITRA). The average factor scores and Content Analysis were used for the analysis of data. All factors relating to human costs had moderate / critical evaluation. As for health damage, physical damage received moderate / critical evaluation, and the others were evaluated as positive / supportable. However, the presence of mental disorders was reported, in a discourse that trivialized suffering from work.

Resumo O estudo que deu origem a este artigo teve por objetivo analisar como o agente comunitário de saúde avalia seu contexto de trabalho e os possíveis fatores que contribuem para seu sofrimento/adoecimento. Tratou-se de um estudo transversal, descritivo, de abordagem quantitativo-qualitativa, com agentes de saúde de 13 municípios da região central do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, no ano de 2014. Utilizaram-se para a coleta de dados um questionário sociodemográfico, o ‘Inventário de trabalho e risco de adoecimento’ e entrevista. Os dados foram examinados por meio da análise de conteúdo. As situações de sofrimento relacionaram-se ao não reconhecimento profissional, ritmos excessivos, sobrecarga de trabalho, conflitos com a comunidade, não resolutividade das ações, indisponibilidade de materiais e insumos somados à localização geográfica da unidade de saúde e das residências dos usuários, tipo de estratégia e gestão da saúde. Concluiu-se que o contexto de trabalho do agente de saúde pode resultar em sofrimento/adoecimento desses trabalhadores.

Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze how community health agents evaluate the work context and possible factors that contribute to their suffering/illness. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative-qualitative study carried out with health agents from 13 municipalities in the central region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2014. The ‘Work and Risk of Illness Inventory’ sociodemographic questionnaire and interview were used to collect data. The data were analyzed through content analysis. The situations of suffering were related to the lack of professional recognition, an excessive pace, work overload, conflicts with the community, lack of resolution of actions, unavailability of materials and inputs, in addition to the geographic location of the health unit and of the users’ homes, type of health strategy, and management. It was concluded that the health agent’s working environment can cause suffering/illness among these workers.

Resumen El estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar cómo el agente comunitario de salud evalúa su contexto de trabajo y los posibles factores que contribuyen para su sufrimiento/padecimiento. Se trató de un estudio transversal, descriptivo, de enfoque cuantitativo y cualitativo, con agentes de salud de 13 municipios de la región central del estado de Río Grande do Sul, Brasil, en el año 2014. Para la recolección de datos se utilizó un cuestionario sociodemográfico, el “Inventario de trabajo y riesgo de padecimiento” y entrevista. Los datos se estudiaron mediante el análisis de contenido. Las situaciones de sufrimiento se relacionaron con la falta de reconocimiento profesional, ritmos excesivos, sobrecarga de trabajo, conflictos con la comunidad, falta de resolutividad de las acciones, no disponibilidad de materiales e insumos aunados a la ubicación geográfica de la unidad de salud y de las residencias de los usuarios, tipo de estrategia y gestión de la salud. Se concluyó que el contexto de trabajo del agente de salud puede resultar en sufrimiento/padecimiento de estos trabajadores.

RESUMO: A cobertura plástica tem sido utilizada com a finalidade de evitar os efeitos negativos do molhamento foliar sobre a incidência de doenças em videiras 'Niagara Rosada', reduzir a aplicação de defensivos agrícolas e, dessa maneira, melhorar a qualidade dos frutos. Contudo, na região Norte Fluminense, não se tem estudos relacionados aos efeitos do uso da cobertura plástica na assimilação fotossintética do carbono e na eficiência fotoquímica associada ao fotossistema II (PSII) dessa espécie. O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar a capacidade fotossintética em videiras 'Niagara Rosada' cultivadas sob cobertura plástica e sem cobertura plástica no Norte Fluminense. O experimento foi realizado entre abril e junho de 2013, no sítio Tabuinha, localizado no 3o distrito do município de São Fidélis, RJ. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi inteiramente casualizado com 2 tratamentos, com cobertura plástica e sem cobertura plástica, e 12 repetições. As avaliações foram relacionadas às variáveis climáticas, às trocas gasosas e ao rendimento quântico máximo do fotossistema II. Nesta pesquisa, sob a cobertura plástica, foi possível observar a elevação no valor da temperatura máxima do ar em 2,3ºC, redução na umidade relativa em 1,5%, incremento no déficit de pressão de vapor do armax em 0,4kPa, e redução na intensidade luminosa em 47,7%. Essas alterações não causaram comprometimento na eficiência fotoquímica das folhas. O sistema com cobertura plástica promoveu maior taxa fotossintética líquida (A) pela manhã (8h), e este aumento em A foi associado à maior condutância estomática nesse horário. Neste trabalho, a cobertura plástica utilizada não causou comprometimentos na capacidade fotossintética da videira 'Niagara Rosada'.

ABSTRACT: New techniques in tropical regions such as use of transparent plastic covering (TPC), have been employed in grapes to avoid the wetting leaves and fruits, which can reduce the occurrence of fungal diseases, reduce the use of sprays, and reduce damage caused by hail and high winds. TPC may significantly affect the photosynthetic rates of grapevines cultivated in tropical regions, and thus have strong effects on plant productivity and improve fruit quality. However, in the North of Rio de Janeiro region there are lacks of studies related to TPC effects on photosynthetic capacity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the photosynthetic capacity in 'Niagara Rosada' vines grown under TPC and without transparent plastic covering (WTPC). The experiment was conducted between April and June 2013, on Tabuinha farm, located in the 3rd district of São Fidélis, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. A completely randomized block design was used with two treatments (TPC and WTPC) and twelve replications. Evaluations consisted of climatological variables, gas exchange and maximum quantum efficiency of open photosystem II centers-quantum yield (Fv/Fm) It was possible to observe that under TPC maximum temperature increase of 2.3°C, relative humidity reduced 1.5%, vapor pressure deficit increase 0.4kPa, and light intensity reduced 47.7%. These changes did not cause photochemical damage to the leaves. The TPC promoted higher net photosynthetic rate at 800h, which was associated with higher stomatal conductance. Thus, the TPC used in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State did not impair the photosynthetic capacity of 'Niagara Rosada' vines.

INTRODUÇÃO: Embora a abordagem transradial tenha reduzido as complicações vasculares, estudos demonstram que pode estar relacionada a maior exposição radiológica. É objetivo deste estudo comparar os parâmetros de exposição radiológica em procedimentos cardiológicos invasivos pelos acessos radial e femoral. MÉTODOS: Estudo de coorte prospectiva incluindo pacientes submetidos a cateterismo cardíaco diagnóstico ou intervenção coronária percutânea (ICP) entre agosto de 2010 e dezembro de 2011. Características clínicas, angiográficas e de exposição à radiação foram registradas em banco de dados específico. Os pacientes foram analisados de acordo com a via de acesso: femoral ou radial. RESULTADOS: Foram incluídos 1.197 pacientes, 782 submetidos a procedimentos por via femoral e 415, a procedimentos por via radial. Observou-se menor prevalência de pacientes do sexo feminino (36,2% vs. 45,6%; P < 0,01), cirurgia de revascularização miocárdica prévia (4% vs. 12,7%; P < 0,01) e valvulopatia grave (0,3% vs. 1,4%; P = 0,07) no grupo radial. A mediana da dose de radiação recebida pelos pacientes foi maior com a utilização da via radial, tanto para procedimentos diagnósticos (621,6 mGy vs. 445,7 mGy; P < 0,01) como terapêuticos (1.241,6 mGy vs. 990,9 mGy; P < 0,01). Operadores menos experientes no acesso radial expuseram pacientes a maior dose de radiação nas ICPs (1.463 mGy vs. 1.196 mGy; P = 0,02), o que não ocorreu com os mais experientes (1.311 mGy vs. 1.449 mGy; P = 0,84). CONCLUSÕES: Pacientes submetidos a procedimentos cardiológicos invasivos são expostos a níveis maiores de radiação pela via de acesso radial. No entanto, operadores experientes podem neutralizar essa desvantagem em relação à via femoral.

BACKGROUND: Although the transradial approach had significantly reduced vascular complications, studies have demonstrated that it may be related to higher radiation exposure. The objective of this study is to compare radiation exposure in invasive cardiologic procedures using the transradial and transfemoral approaches. METHODS: Prospective cohort study including patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between August 2010 and December 2011. Clinical, angiographic and radiation exposure characteristics were recorded in a dedicated database. Patients were analyzed according to the access route: femoral or radial. RESULTS: Of the 1,197 patients included in the study, 782 were submitted to procedures using the femoral access and 415 using the radial access. There was a lower prevalence of females (36.2% vs. 45.6%; P < 0.01), previous coronary artery bypass graft surgery (4% vs. 12.7%; P < 0.01) and severe valvular heart disease (0.3% vs. 1.4%; P = 0.07) in the radial group. The median radiation dose received by the patients was higher with the radial approach, both for diagnostic (621.6 mGy vs 445.7 mGy; P < 0.01) and therapeutic procedures (1,241.6 mGy vs 990.9 mGy; P < 0.01). Less experienced operators in the radial approach exposed patients to higher radiation doses (1,463 mGy vs 1,196 mGy; P = 0.02), which did not occur with the more experienced operators (1,311 mGy vs 1,449 mGy; P = 0.84). CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing invasive cardiologic procedures are exposed to higher radiation levels when the radial access is used. However, experienced operators may neutralize this disadvantage.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi validar, pela técnica de PCR quantitativo em tempo real (RT-qPCR) genes para serem utilizados como referência em estudos de expressão gênica em soja, em ensaios de estresse hídrico. Foram avaliados quatro genes comumente utilizados em soja: Gmβ-actin, GmGAPDH, GmLectin e GmRNAr18S. O RNA total foi extraído de seis amostras: três amostras de raízes em sistema de hidroponia com diferentes intensidades de déficit hídrico (0, 25, 50, 75 e 100 minutos de estresse hídrico), e três amostras de folhas de plantas cultivadas em areia com diferentes umidades do solo (15, 5 e 2,5% de umidade gravimétrica). Os dados brutos do intervalo "cycle threshold" (Ct) foram analisados, e a eficiência de cada iniciador foi calculada para uma analise da Ct entre as diferentes amostras. A aplicação do programa GeNorm foi utilizada para a avaliação dos melhores genes de referência, de acordo com a estabilidade. O GmGAPDH foi o gene menos estável, com o maior valor médio de estabilidade de expressão (M), e os genes mais estáveis, com menor valor de M, foram o Gmβ-actin e GmRNAr18S, tanto nas amostras de raízes como nas de folhas. Estes genes podem ser usados em RT-qPCR como gens de referência para análises de expressão gênica.

The objective of this work was to validate, by quantitative PCR in real time (RT-qPCR), genes to be used as reference in studies of gene expression in soybean in drought-stressed trials. Four genes commonly used in soybean were evaluated: Gmβ-actin, GmGAPDH, GmLectin and GmRNAr18S. Total RNA was extracted from six samples: three from roots in a hydroponic system with different drought intensities (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 minutes of water stress), and three from leaves of plants grown in sand with different soil moistures (15, 5 and 2.5% gravimetric humidity). The raw cycle threshold (Ct) data were analyzed, and the efficiency of each primer was calculated for an overall analysis of the Ct range among the different samples. The GeNorm application was used to evaluate the best reference gene, according to its stability. The GmGAPDH was the least stable gene, with the highest mean values of expression stability (M), and the most stable genes, with the lowest M values, were the Gmβ-actin and GmRNAr18S, when both root and leaves samples were tested. These genes can be used in RT-qPCR as reference gene for expression analysis.
