ABSTRACT Native species planted in areas previously occupied by degraded pasture can play an important role in biomass supply and atmospheric carbon sequestration. Evaluating the performance of native species in different planting spacings becomes important for forestry and the management of new species with economic potential. Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum is a non-traditional species in the southeastern region of Brazil and it was established in pasture areas to evaluate growth, biomass, and carbon stock. Five planting spacings (3 m x 2 m, 3 m x 3 m, 4 m x 3 m, 4 m x 4 m, and 5 m x 5 m, in monoculture) were tested in 9 experimental plots. The biomass of the shoot and root, as well as the carbon content, were obtained by the direct method. The biomass varied 31.4 and 52.9 kg tree-1 in the spacing 3 m x 2 m and 5 m x 5 m, respectively. The greater carbon stock was observed in the lower spacing (19.43 Mg ha-1), 50% higher than in the larger spacing. The spacing did not influence the biomass and carbon stock in the roots per unit area. The performance of the species should be monitored at advanced ages given the different responses to planting spacing and competition between plants.

RESUMO Espécies nativas plantadas em locais anteriormente ocupados por pastagem degradada podem desempenhar um papel importante no suprimento de biomassa e no sequestro de carbono atmosférico. Avaliar o desempenho das espécies nativas em diferentes espaçamentos de plantio se torna importante para a silvicultura e o manejo de novas espécies com potencial econômico. Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum é uma espécie não tradicional na região sudeste do Brasil, e foi estabelecida em área de pastagem com objetivo de avaliar o crescimento, a biomassa e o estoque de carbono. Foram testados cinco espaçamentos de plantio em monocultivo (3 m x 2 m, 3 m x 3 m, 4 m x 3 m, 4 m x 4 m e 5 m x 5 m) com 9 parcelas experimentais. A biomassa da parte aérea e radicular, bem como o teor de carbono foram obtidos por meio do método direto. A biomassa variou 31.4 and 52.9 kg árvore-1 nos espaçamentos 3 m x 2 m e 5 m x 5 m, repectivamente. O maior estoque de carbono foi observado no espaçamento mais adensado (19.43 Mg ha-1), sendo 50% maior do que no espaçamento menos adensado. O espaçamento não influenciou a biomassa e o estoque de carbono nas raízes por unidade de área. O desempenho da espécie deveria ser monitorado em idades avançadas dado as diferentes respostas ao espaçamento de plantio e competição entre plantas.

ABSTRACT The fitting of volume models by the traditional method (data obtained by means of scaling several trees), is the most used way to obtain volume equations. This method requires a lot of effort and is quite costly, therefore some alternatives have been developed to decrease the sampling of the number of trees and obtain results of estimates similar to that obtained by the traditional method, highlighting the mixed modeling applied to calibrate equations. In this work, the general objective of the research was to calibrate the Schumacher-Hall volume model by predicting random effects at the stand level and comparing it with the equations obtained using the traditional approach. The database is made up of 670 trees with ages varying from 1 to 10.75 years. The calibrations tested in the mixed model were using: (i) the largest tree of variable d for each stand; (ii) the two largest trees of variable d for each stand; (iii) the three largest trees in d for each stand; (iv) the four largest trees in d for each stand; (v) the five largest trees in d for each stand; (vi) the median tree for variable d in each stand; vii) one random tree in each stand; viii) three trees, being the smallest tree, the mean tree and the largest tree for the variable d for each stand; ix) three trees, being the mean tree, the mean tree minus two standard deviations and the mean tree plus two standard deviations for the variable d in each stand. The statistics for evaluating the equations were the coefficient of determination, the standard error of the estimate, the analysis of residuals, and the graphical analysis of the observed and estimated values. The results show that the volume equations can be calibrated at the stand level by sampling three trees: the average tree, the average tree plus two standard deviations, and the average tree minus two standard deviations. Considering that in the traditional method, 50 trees on average are measured in the forest inventory, the reduction of sampling in a new stand would be 94%.

RESUMO O ajuste dos modelos de volume pelo método tradicional (dados obtidos por meio de cubagem de várias árvores) é a maneira mais utilizada para obter equações de volume. Este método demanda muito esforço e é bastante oneroso, portanto algumas alternativas têm sido desenvolvidas para diminuir a amostragem do número de árvores e obter resultados de estimativas semelhantes ao obtido pelo método tradicional, destacando-se a modelagem mista aplicada para calibrar equações. Neste trabalho, o objetivo da pesquisa foi calibrar o modelo de volume de Schumacher-Hall por meio da predição de efeitos aleatórios em nível de povoamento e compará-lo com as equações obtidas pela abordagem tradicional. A base de dados é composta de 670 árvores com idades variando de 1 a 10,75 anos. As calibrações testadas no modelo misto foram: i) a maior árvore da variável d para cada povoamento; ii) as duas maiores árvores da variável d para cada povoamento; iii) as três maiores árvores em d para cada povoamento; iv) as quatro maiores árvores em d para cada povoamento; v) as cinco maiores árvores em d para cada povoamento; vi) a árvore mediana para a variável d em cada povoamento; vii) uma árvore aleatória em cada povoamento; viii) três árvores, sendo a menor árvore, a árvore média e a maior da variável d para cada povoamento; ix) três árvores, sendo a árvore média, a árvore média menos dois desvios padrões e a árvore média mais dois desvios padrões para a variável d em cada povoamento. As estatísticas para avaliação das equações foram o coeficiente de determinação, o erro padrão da estimativa, a análise de resíduos e a análise gráfica dos valores observados e estimados. Os resultados evidenciam que as equações de volume podem ser calibradas em nível de povoamento por meio da amostragem de três árvores sendo elas, a árvore média, a árvore média mais dois desvios padrões e a árvore média menos dois desvios padrões, considerando que no método tradicional são cubadas 50 árvores em média no inventário florestal, a redução da amostragem em um novo povoamento seria de 94%.

Abstract Forests play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. Among the factors that can affect carbon stocks in forest stands, planting spacing stands out. This study verified the effect of spacing on biomass and carbon stock in a stand of Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg at 56 months of age. They were planted with 3 x 2 m, 3 x 3 m, 4 x 3 m, 4 x 4 m and 5 x 5 m spacings. The biomass of the above-ground compartments (stem, branches, leaves and bark) and root biomass was quantified, totalling 16.42 and 6.68 Mg ha-1, respectively. The largest amount of biomass and carbon stock occurred in the denser spacings. Total biomass was twice as large at 3 x 2 m spacing compared to 5 x 5 m spacing. The root biomass represented 40.93% of the total biomass. The order of participation of the components in the total aboveground biomass was branches (44.99%), stem (40.77%), leaves (13.99%) and bark (4.90%). The denser spacings (3 x 2 m and 3 x 3 m) showed higher values of biomass and carbon stock than the wide spacings (4 x 3 m, 4 x 4 m and 5 x 5 m). There was no effect of planting spacing on carbon stock in necromass and soil.

Resumo As florestas desempenham um importante papel no ciclo do carbono. Dentre os fatores que podem afetar os estoques de carbono nos povoamentos florestais, o espaçamento de plantio tem grande relevância. O objetivo foi verificar o efeito do espaçamento na biomassa e no estoque de carbono em um povoamento de Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg aos 56 meses de idade. O povoamento foi implantado nos espaçamentos 3 x 2 m, 3 x 3 m, 4 x 3 m, 4 x 4 m e 5 x 5 m. Quantificou-se a biomassa dos compartimentos acima do solo (madeira, galhos, folhas e casca) e da raiz, totalizando 16,42 e 6,68 Mg ha-1, respectivamente. A maior quantidade de biomassa e estoque de carbono ocorreu nos menores espaçamentos. A biomassa total foi duas vezes maior no espaçamento de 3 x 2 m em comparação com o espaçamento de 5 x 5 m. A biomassa abaixo do solo representou 40,93% da biomassa total. A ordem de participação dos componentes na biomassa aérea total foi galhos (44,99%), madeira (40,77%), folhas (13,99%) e casca (4,90%). Os espaçamentos mais densos (3 x 2 e 3 x 3 m) apresentaram maiores valores de biomassa e estoque de carbono do que os espaçamentos mais amplos (4 x 3 m, 4 x 4 m e 5 x 5 m). Não houve efeito do espaçamento de plantio sobre o estoque de carbono na necromassa e no solo.

Resumo Este trabalho analisou as distribuições diamétricas antes e após intervenções silviculturais em uma área de floresta tropical úmida da Amazônia no estado do Amapá, Brasil. O objetivo consistiu em entender de que modo a distribuição diamétrica da floresta foi recuperada depois dos tratamentos silviculturais entre 1984 e 2011, um intervalo de 27 anos. Para essa finalidade, dados de 40 parcelas permanentes foram utilizados. A função Weibull da distribuição diamétrica nos anos de 1984, 1990 e 2011 foi ajustada aos tratamentos controle T0 (0% de exploração e 0% de desbastes), T07 (25% de exploração e 50% de desbastes) e T11 (35% de exploração e 50% de desbastes) através do pacote estatístico Table Curve. As comparações das distribuições diamétricas antes e depois das intervenções silviculturais foram feitas usando o teste de χ 2. Os resultados mostraram que os ajustes da função Weibull obtiveram boa aderência pelo teste de Kolmogorov-Smirnov (p > 0,05), em todos os tratamentos e em todos os períodos. Não houve diferenças significativas antes e depois das intervenções para T0. Por outro lado, foram observadas diferenças das distribuições diamétricas antes e depois das intervenções conforme os níveis de intervenção para T7 e T11. Portanto, para T11, a distribuição diamétrica recuperou-se depois das intervenções, o que significa que o período de 1984 a 2011 foi suficiente para a recuperação da distribuição diamétrica ao seu estado inicial.

Abstract This study analyzed the diametric distributions before and after forest management in a rainforest area of the Amazon in the Amapá State, Brazil. It aimed to understand how the diametric distribution of the forest was recovered after 27 years of forest management between 1984 and 2011. For this purpose, data from 40 permanent plots were used. The Weibull function for the diametric distribution was fitted to data from 1984, 1990, and 2011 by applying the Table Curve statistical package over the control treatments T0 (0% exploration and 0% thinning), T07 (25% exploration and 50% thinning), and T11 (35% exploration and 50% thinning). Comparisons between the diametric distributions before and after the forest management were conducted using the χ 2 test. After fitting the Weibull function, the results showed good adherence by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p > 0.05) for all treatments and periods. There were no differences in the diametric distributions before and after management for T0. In contrast, diametric distributions were different before and after forest management regarding the intervention levels for T7 and T11. Therefore, for T11, the diametric distribution recovered after management, indicating that forest management during 1984-2011 was enough to recover the diametric distribution to its initial state.

RESUMEN La conservación de las áreas verdes urbanas proporcionan beneficios de mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático, además de ofrecer servicios ecosistémicos para las poblaciones locales, donde la valoración económica de los bienes resulta una alternativa confiable para dicha finalidad. El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la biomasa total y el valor económico de la reserva de Carbono del recurso arbóreo del Parque Dr. Claudio Pavetti. Fue realizado un inventario forestal identificando y midiendo todos los árboles con d1,30 cm ≥ 10 cm. Para la estimación de la biomasa total se aplicó la ecuación alométrica para la ecorregión Chaco Húmedo. Para la valoración económica se utilizó el precio promedio del primer semestre del año 2020, del valor de los Derechos de Emisión de la Unión Europea (EUA) reflejados en la Bolsa del Sistema Europeo de Negociación de CO2 (SENDECO2). Fueron identificados 94 individuos, pertenecientes a 22 especies, 21 géneros y 13 familias botánicas. Las especies que obtuvieron mayor valor de Carbono acumulado fueron Peltophorum dubium (54,62 Mg ha-1), Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (23,56 Mg ha-1), Pterogyne nitens (18,75 Mg ha-1) y Parapiptadenia rigida (12,21 Mg ha-1). La biomasa total estimada fue de 281,86 Mg ha-1, lo que equivale a 132,47 Mg ha-1 de C y 485,74 Mg ha-1 de CO2 eq. El valor económico del servicio ecosistémico de la reserva de C asciende a 168,11 US$ ha-1.

ABSTRACT The conservation of urban green areas provides benefits of mitigation and adaptation to climate change, in addition to offering ecosystem services for local populations, where the economic valuation of the goods is a reliable alternative for this purpose. The objective of this study was to determine the total biomass and the economic value of the Carbon reserve of the arboreal resource in the Dr. Claudio Pavetti Park. A forest inventory was carried out identifying and measuring all the trees with d1.30 cm ≥ 10 cm. For the estimation of the total biomass, the allometric equation for the Humid Chaco ecoregion was applied. For the economic valuation, the average price of the first semester of 2020 was used, considering the value of the Emission Rights of the European Union (EUA) reflected in the Stock Exchange of the European CO2 Trading System (SENDECO2). 94 individuals were identified belonging to 22 species, 21 genera and 13 botanical families. The species that obtained the highest accumulated Carbon value were Peltophorum dubium (54.62 Mg ha-1), Anadenanthera colubrina var. cebil (23.56 Mg ha-1), Pterogyne nitens (18.75 Mg ha-1) and Parapiptadenia rigida (12.21 Mg ha-1). The estimated total biomass was 291.58 Mg ha-1, which is equivalent to 137.04 Mg ha-1 of C and 502.49 Mg ha-1 of CO2 eq. The economic value of the ecosystem service of the reserve for C amounts to US$ 168.11 ha-1.

RESUMO Objetivou-se quantificar os teores de C nos reservatórios da biomassa vegetal de diferentes espécies da Caatinga, floresta tropical seca do Nordeste do Brasil. Foi realizado um estudo florístico e fitossociológico prévio e selecionadas nove espécies de maior densidade absoluta, que representou 87% do fragmento. Foram amostradas biomassa dos compartimentos folhas e lenho de cada uma das espécies para determinação do teor de C. Como resultado, houve diferença nos teores foliares de C entre as espécies. O teor de C foliar das espécies variou entre 448,0 e 454,3 g C por kg de biomassa seca e o teor de C do lenho das espécies variou entre 451,4 e 453,1 g C por kg de biomassa seca. Esses resultados sugerem a utilização de fator de conversão de biomassa para carbono específico por espécie em Caatinga, como alternativa ao fator genérico de 50% recomendado pelo IPCC. Esta pesquisa revela que o uso do fator recomendado pelo IPCC superestima estoques de C em Caatinga. Mais estudos são encorajados para confirmar esse resultado.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to quantify the carbon contents in biomass reservoirs of different species in a Tropical Dry Forest located in Northeast, Brazil. We developed a previous floristic and phytosociological study and selected the nine highest absolute density (AD) species of the fragment, representing 87% of the fragment AD. We sampled the leaves and stem tissues of each species for carbon content determination. As result, the leaf C content differed between the species. The C leaf content ranged between 448.0 and 454.3 g C per kg of dry biomass. The C stem content varied between the species from 451.4 to 453.1 g C per kg of dry biomass. Our results suggest the use of a species-specific biomass-carbon conversion factor in Caatinga, as an alternative to the 50% factor recommended by the IPCC. This research reveals that the use of the factor recommended by the IPCC overestimates C stocks in Caatinga. Further studies are encouraged to confirm this result.

RESUMO A erva-mate é um produto florestal não-madeireiro importante no Sul do Brasil, sendo cultivada junto com espécies nativas devido à sua necessidade de sombreamento, o que contribui para a conservação e fixação do carbono na sua biomassa. Contudo, a determinação da biomassa é difícil, pois as estimativas não garantem a aditividade entre os compartimentos e a biomassa total acima do solo. Objetivou-se avaliar modelo aditivo (seemingly unrelated regression - SUR) e não aditivo (ordinary least squares - OLS) de biomassa para um povoamento de erva-mate, além de comparar seu estoque de carbono com outros tipos de uso do solo, consolidando o seu potencial frente às mudanças climáticas. Um total de 30 árvores foram cortadas, compartimentadas e pesadas em balança digital, a fim de ajustar quatro modelos de biomassa. Os estoques de carbono foram comparados com valores encontrados na literatura. O viés do modelo SUR foi inferior a 2 %, exceto para as folhas, enquanto, no modelo OLS, variou entre 1 e 14 %. O erro variou entre 23 e 49 % para o SUR e entre 31 e 50 % para o OLS. Os modelos ajustados por SUR garantiram acurácia e aditividade dos compartimentos. O plantio de Ilex paraguariensis estocou mais carbono que áreas de agricultura e pasto, removendo mais gás CO2, evidenciando a sustentabilidade desse sistema e favorecendo a estabilidade climática.

ABSTRACT Ilex paraguariensis is an important non-timber forest product in southern Brazil, where it is cultivated in association with native species, given its demand for shading, which contributes to the conservation and carbon fixation in its biomass. However, determining this biomass is difficult, since the estimates do not guarantee additivity between the compartments and the total aboveground biomass. This study aimed to evaluate additive (seemingly unrelated regression - SUR) and non-additive (ordinary least squares - OLS) biomass models in an Ilex paraguariensis stand and comparing its carbon stock with other land use types, consolidating its potential in the face of climate change. A total of 30 trees were cut, compartmentalized and weighed on a digital scale, and four biomass models were adjusted. The carbon stocks were compared with values found in the literature. The bias in the SUR model was less than 2 %, except for the leaves, while the bias in the OLS model varied between 1 and 14 %. The error ranged between 23 and 49 % for SUR, and between 31 and 50 % for OLS. The models adjusted by SUR ensured the accuracy and additivity of the compartments. The Ilex paraguariensis stand stored more carbon than agriculture and pasture areas, removing more CO2, evidencing the sustainability of this system and favoring the climate stability.

Resumo O crescimento populacional e as questões climáticas impõem desafios à sociedade, principalmente no que diz respeito ao abastecimento de alimentos e à manutenção de condições desejáveis do solo. Além disso, há uma evidente necessidade de reduzir as emissões de gases de efeito estufa, notadamente àquelas causadas por mudanças no uso do solo. Portanto, há necessidade de estudos que abordem o entendimento das condições do solo sob os diferentes usos do solo, uma vez que esses podem se tornar fontes de carbono dependendo das práticas de manejo. Este estudo foi conduzido em perfis de Plintossolos Amazônicos sob: florestas primárias, pastagens para pecuária e plantios mistos de restauração florestal. A densidade e o teor de carbono foram avaliados em quatro profundidades (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 e 20-40 cm), enquanto as propriedades físicas foram examinadas nas profundidades de 0-20 e 20-40 cm. Solos sob florestas primárias apresentaram as menores densidades e os maiores teores de carbono quando comparados a outros usos da terra. Esses solos também apresentaram o maior estoque de carbono. Entretanto, não foi observada diferença significativa pelo teste de Tukey para ambas variáveis. As pastagens apresentaram maiores estoques de carbono quando comparados aos plantios mistos (aos 10 anos). Nossos resultados indicaram que práticas de manejo adequadas são necessárias para a manutenção da capacidade produtiva do solo após a conversão de florestas para outros usos. Os Plintossolos, por suas características texturais e mineralógicas, apresentaram elevados teores de quartzo, notadamente nas camadas superficiais, demonstrando quão sensíveis às mudanças na paisagem. O estoque de carbono no solo é, portanto, sensível às mudanças na sua cobertura. Este estudo fornece informações úteis para o entendimento do estoque de carbono em Plintossolos na Amazônia Brasileira, bem como para aprimorar as estimativas realizadas no Inventário Nacional de Emissões de Gases de Efeito Estufa.

Abstract The population growth and the climate changes impose challenges to society, especially regarding food supply and the maintenance of desirable soil conditions. Besides, it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, there is a necessity of studies addressing the understanding of soil conditions under different land uses, as soils can become carbon pools or sources depending on management practices. This study was conducted in soil profiles of Amazon Plinthosols under different land uses: undisturbed forests, cattle ranching pastures, and mixed crops. Soil density and carbon fraction were assessed at four depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, and 20-40 cm), while particle size and mineralogy were examined at 0-20 and 20-40 cm. Soils under undisturbed forests presented lower densities and higher carbon fractions when compared to other land uses. These soils also presented the highest carbon stock; however, the Tukey test indicated no significant differences. Soil densities were lower in forest environments. Cattle ranching pastures presented higher carbon stocks when compared to mixed crops (at age 10 years). Our results indicated that proper soil management practices are needed to maintain the soil productive capacity after converting forested areas for other uses. Plinthosols, due to its textural and mineralogical characteristics, presented high amounts of quartz, demonstrating how sensitive these environments are to changes in the landscape due to deforestation and how unstable the maintenance of carbon stocks is because of such conditions. This study provides useful information to the understanding of the carbon stock in Amazon Plinthosols. It may be helpful to improve the Brazilian Inventory of Anthropogenic Emissions and Removals of Greenhouse Gases and to understand the impacts of land-use change.

ABSTRACT Accurate forest biomass estimates require the selection of appropriate models of individual trees. Thus, two properties are required in tree biomass modeling: (1) additivity of biomass components and (2) estimator efficiency. This study aimed to develop a system of equations to estimate young eucalyptus aboveground biomass and guarantee additivity and estimator efficiency. Aboveground eucalyptus biomass models were calibrated using four methods: generalized least squares (GLS), weighted least squares (WLS), seemingly unrelated regression (SUR), and weighted seemingly unrelated regression (WSUR). The approaches were compared with regard to performance, additivity, and estimator efficiency. The methods did not differ with regard to the mean biomass estimation; therefore, their performance was similar. The GLS and WLS approaches did not satisfy the additivity principle, as the sum of the biomass components was not equal to total biomass. However, this was not observed with the SUR and WSUR approaches. With regard to estimator efficiency, the WSUR approach resulted in narrow confidence intervals and an efficiency gain of over 20%. The WSUR approach should be used in forest biomass modeling as it resulted in effective estimators while ensuring equation additivity, thus providing an easy and accurate alternative to estimate the initial biomass of eucalyptus stands in ecophysiological models.

Abstract We investigated the spatial distribution of population data and diameter classes and modeled the diameter structure of Vouacapoua americana Aubl. (Acapu) trees in a community forest management area. A forest census of trees with diameters ≥ 33 cm was carried out in the 2015 Annual Production Unit (APU-2015). Ripley’s univariate K function and the global Moran’s index were used to describe spatial autocorrelation. Three harvest intensities (50, 70, and 80%) were simulated for the potential trees. The Weibull (3P) function provided the best performance to describe the diameter distribution of the original tree population, as well as in the harvested 50 and 70% intensities. In general, the spatial pattern of V. americana was aggregated. However, other natural factors, as population size, dynamics, geographic distribution, should be used as indicators for forest management and conservation of the specie.

ABSTRACT Necromass play a significant ecological function, including the deposition of organic matter, which is essential for carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. Despite the devoted attention to the role of forest necromass into the global carbon cycle, international organizations such as IPCC and FAO have reported the lack of compatible data concerning the carbon stocks in forest necromass among different regions. This paper reviews the terminologies and sampling methods regarding the quantification of carbon stock in forest necromass. Volume, biomass and carbon content determination methods were examined into the literature and then notably in Brazil. We address the problems associated with sampling methods and spatial distribution in related studies. Conflict in nomenclatures, components and diameter threshold confound the comparison of regional results. Meanwhile, we present a standard terminology for similar studies. Coarse woody and non-woody (litter) necromass are frequently computed, although fine woody necromass stands ignored in most studies and reports. Finally, we provide recommendations on specific sampling and measurement methods, taking into account necromass size and spatial pattern for both necromass and litter.

Abstract The aim of this study was to quantify the aboveground biomass and organic carbon of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze in a Mixed Ombrophilous Montane Forest in the state of Paraná. The aboveground biomass determination was carried out according to the direct method, using 29 trees with Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) ≥ 40 cm. The trees were felled, cubed and weighed by compartments, which were sampled for determining moisture and carbon content. The average aerial biomass and carbon were 2,126.5 kg ind-1 and 935.8 kg ind-1, respectively. The moisture content resulted in a mean individual accumulation of 2,376.6 liters ind-1 of water. Age did not necessarily result in higher volume production but resulted in higher stem biomass production. Organic carbon accumulation by native A. angustifolia trees should support carbon credits as an incentive for the conservation of araucaria and Mixed Ombrophilous Forest fragments.

RESUMO O procedimento de inventário florestal é considerado de alta importância no que concerne estudos de estoque madeireiro, estrutura e diversidade florestal, que fornecem informações relevantes para políticas públicas, planos de manejo e pesquisas ecológicas. O presente trabalho buscou avaliar o desempenho de técnicas de inventário na região Amazônica para estimativa de estoques madeireiros com maior nível de acurácia, mantendo a intensidade amostral fixa. Dois processos de amostragem foram avaliados: amostragem aleatória simples e amostragem em dois estágios. Esses processos foram avaliados através de alocação de unidades amostrais com dimensões distintas, e os estimadores gerados foram analisados em função da densidade de árvores e da área basal. A amostragem aleatória simples produziu os menores erros, alcançando 9% quando todas as espécies foram amostradas conjuntamente, e mostrou-se mais eficiente na detecção de variações em parâmetros fitossociológicos. A amostragem em dois estágios produziu os estimadores menos acurados e apresentou respostas mais lentas às variações em parâmetros fitossociológicos.

ABSTRACT Forest inventory procedures are of utmost importance to studies of wood volume stocks, and forest structure and diversity, which provide relevant information to public policies, management plans and ecological research. The present work focused on the performance of inventory techniques in the Amazon region to evaluate wood volume stocks with higher levels of accuracy while maintaining sampling intensity fixed. Two sampling processes were assessed: simple random sampling and two-stage cluster sampling. The processes were evaluated through the allocation of sampling units with different dimensions, and the effectiveness of the generated estimators was analyzed as a function of stand density and basal area. Simple random sampling resulted in the smallest errors, reaching 9% when all species were sampled together. The method depicted forest phytosociological parameters with greater sensitivity, whereas two-stage cluster sampling produced the least accurate estimators and presented slower responses to variation in phytosociological parameters.

Resumo As funções de densidade de probabilidade têm várias aplicações florestais, entre as quais o tratamento de dados biométricos e uso em modelagem. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar qual função densidade de probabilidade melhor se ajusta ao diâmetro de copa (dcopa) e ao diâmetro quadrático (dq), e também analisar o efeito dessas variáveis na estrutura da floresta. O estudo foi realizado com uma base de dados de Araucaria angustifolia provenientes de um fragmento florestal, e também com dados de Pinus taeda de um plantio florestal, ambos oriundos do estado do Paraná. Para as respectivas áreas de estudo foram delimitadas as copas das árvores com suporte de ortofotos digitais. As funções avaliadas foram: Normal, Log-normal 2P, Beta, Gama, Weibull 3P e Weber. A função que melhor se ajustou à variável dq para ambas as espécies foi a Normal. Já para a variável dcopa, a função de Weibull 3P foi a que apresentou melhor aderência para o fragmento de araucária e a função de Weber para o plantio florestal de pinus.

Abstract The probability density functions have several forest applications, among which biometric data processing and modeling use. The objective of this study was to verify which probability density function best fits the cup diameter (dcopa) and the quadratic diameter (dq), and also to analyze the effect of these variables on the forest structure. The study was carried out with a database of Araucaria angustifolia from a forest fragment, and also with Pinus taeda data from a forest plantation, both from the state of Paraná. For the respective study areas, the crowns of the trees with digital orthophoto support were delimited. The evaluated functions were: Normal, Log-normal 2P, Beta, Gama, Weibull 3P and Weber. The function that best fit the variable dq for both species was Normal. For the variable dcopa, the function of Weibull 3P was the one that presented better adhesion to the Araucaria fragment and the Weber function for the Pinus forest plantation.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to test the performance of canopy data obtained from Airborne Laser Scanner (ALS) in generating estimates of above-ground biomass (AGB) of Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze individuals. A cloud of ALS points located in a fragment of native urban forest in Curitiba, Paraná was used. The procedures consisted of: classifying points; obtaining and smoothing the Canopy Height Model (CHM); detecting peaks and segmenting canopy using eCognition software. Mathematical models were adjusted to estimate the AGB from the crown areas. Two equations were required to estimate the individual AGB, while R2 (%) values of 96.19 and 98.89 were found. The total AGB stock found was 264.333 kg. The LiDAR technology and the methods for obtaining the information used in this work constitute non-destructive and precise tools for quantifying biomass in native forests.
