Concentración de metales en sangre de cordón umbilical debido a exposición prenatal en una cohorte de la Ciudad de México

Resumen Antecedentes: En México es exigua la evidencia sobre la exposición prenatal a metales. Objetivo: Estimar la concentración de arsénico, cadmio, manganeso y plomo en sangre de cordón umbilical (SCU), y su asociación con las concentraciones en sangre materna durante el embarazo y parto. Material y métodos: Se analizó la concentración de los metales en sangre materna durante el embarazo (n = 901), parto (n = 732) y en la SCU (n = 512) de participantes de la cohorte PROGRESS, residentes en la Ciudad de México. Se estimó la asociación entre la concentración en SCU y los biomarcadores maternos mediante modelos lineales generalizados, ajustados por covariables relevantes. Resultados: La media (μg/L) de plomo, arsénico y manganeso en SCU fue 27.14 (25.28-29.14), 0.77 (0.71-0.84) y 42.60 (40.45-44.83), respectivamente. El valor del cadmio no se pudo estimar porque 86.2 % de las mediciones fueron inferiores al límite de detección. Las concentraciones de plomo y manganeso en SCU se asociaron significativamente a los biomarcadores maternos durante el embarazo y el parto; solo se observó asociación con arsénico en el parto. Conclusiones: La exposición prenatal a metales tóxicos en periodos sensibles de la organogénesis evidencia un problema de salud pública desatendido. Se requiere un biomonitoreo poblacional y establecer regulación dirigida a proveer atención a población vulnerable.
Abstract Background: In Mexico, there is a paucity of evidence on the magnitude of prenatal exposure to metals. Objective: To estimate the concentration of arsenic, cadmium, manganese and lead in umbilical cord blood (UCB) and its association with maternal blood concentrations during pregnancy and delivery. Material and methods: Metal concentration in maternal blood was analyzed during pregnancy (n = 901), delivery (n = 732) and in UCB (n = 512) from participants of the PROGRESS cohort residing in Mexico City. The association between concentrations in UCB and maternal biomarkers was analyzed using generalized linear models, adjusted for relevant covariates. Results: Mean concentrations (μg/L) of lead, arsenic and manganese in UCB were 27.14 (25.28-29.14), 0.77 (0.71-0.84) and 42.60 (40.45-44.83), respectively. Cadmium concentration could not be estimated because 86.2% of measurements were below the detection limit. Lead and manganese concentrations in UCB were significantly associated with maternal biomarkers during pregnancy and delivery; at delivery, association was only observed with arsenic. Conclusions: Prenatal exposure to toxic metals in sensitive periods of organogenesis shows a neglected public health problem. Biomonitoring of the population and establishment of regulations aimed at providing care to vulnerable populations is required.

Resumen Las pruebas de rendimiento en múltiples localidades son esenciales para estudiar las interacciones genotipo x-ambiente, así como para identificar genotipos superiores y localidades de prueba. Por esta razón, el objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar la adaptabilidad y estabilidad de híbridos y variedades endógamas de arroz para el rendimiento del grano. Se realizaron seis experimentos en áreas productoras de arroz en Venezuela utilizando un diseño de bloques completos al azar durante la estación seca de 2015-2016. El ANOVA detectó diferencias significativas para el genotipo, la localidad y la interacción genotipo por localidad, destacando la interacción híbrida por localidad. El modelo de Lin y Binns identificó los híbridos “RHA- 180” y “HL23035H” y la variedad ‘Soberana Fl' como adaptados y estables. En el modelo biplot GGE, los primeros componentes fueron significativos y juntos explicaron el 82 % de la variabilidad total. Los híbridos ‘RHA-180' y ‘HL23035H' se identificaron como adaptados y estables, mientras que el híbrido “RHA-180” se consideró el “genotipo ideal”. Las variedades ‘Soberana Fl' y ‘SD- 20A' mostraron un alto rendimiento y una estabilidad intermedia. Los dos mega-ambientes se diferenciaron por tener los genotipos de mejor rendimiento ‘RHA-180' y ‘Soberana Fl'. La parcela 199 resultó el local más representativo para evaluar híbridos y variedades, mientras que la localidad INIA Guárico discriminó mejor los genotipos de arroz. Ambos modelos coincidieron en la identificación de híbridos y variedades adaptados y estables en Venezuela. No obstante, mientras el modelo de Lin y Binns fue fácil y de eficiente aplicación, el modelo SREG fue más detallado, efectivo e informativo.
Abstract Performance tests in múltiple locations are essential to study the genotype x-environment interaction, as well as to identify superior genotypes and testing locations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the adaptability and stability of rice hybrids and inbred varieties for grain yield. Six experiments were conducted in rice-producing areas of Venezuela using a randomized complete block design during the dry season of 2015 2016. The ANOVA detected significant differences for genotype, location, and genotype-by-location interaction, highlighting the hybrid by location interaction. The Lin and Binns model identified the hybrids ‘RHA-180' and ‘HL23035H' and the ‘Soberana Fl' variety as adapted and stable. In the GGE biplot model, the first components were significant, and together explained 82 % of the total variability. The hybrids ‘RHA-180' and ‘HL23035H' were identified as adapted and stable, whereas the ‘RHA-180' hybrid was considered the “ideal genotype”. The varieties ‘Soberana Fl' and ‘SD-20A' displayed high performance and intermediate stability. The two mega-environments differed by having the best performing genotypes ‘RHA-180' and ‘Soberana Fl'. Plot 199 was the most representative locality to evaluate hybrids and varieties, whereas the INIA Guárico location discriminated better the rice genotypes. Both models coincided regarding the identification of adapted and stable hybrids and varieties in Venezuela. Nonetheless, while it was easy and efficient to apply the Lin and Binns model, the SREG model was more detailed, effective, and informative.

Material y métodos: En 2018 se midió PbS capilar en una muestra representativa de niños de 1 a 4 años de edad residentes en localidades de México menores de 100 000 habitantes (Ensanut 100k). Se indagó sobre uso de LBVPb para consumo de alimentos. Para estimar su asociación con PbS, se generaron modelos logit multinomial estratificados por región. Resultados: La prevalencia de niveles elevados de PbS fue de 21.8%. En las regiones Norte, Centro y Sur las prevalencias fueron 9.8, 20.7 y 25.8%, respectivamente. La asociación con uso y frecuencia de LBVPb fue altamente significativa y diferencial por región. Conclusiones: La exposición a plomo permanece como un problema de salud pública en México, particularmente en el Centro y Sur, y está fuertemente asociada con el uso de LBVPb.

Materials and methods: In 2018, we measured capillary BLL in a representative sample of children 1 to 4 years old residing in Mexican localities under 100 000 inhabitants (Ensanut 100k). We inquired about use of LGC for food preparation and consumption. To estimate its association with BLL, multinomial logit models stratified by region were generated. Results: The prevalence of elevated BLL levels was 21.8%. For the North, Central and South regions, the prevalence were 9.8, 20.7 and 25.8%, respectively. The association with use and frequency of LGC was highly significant and differential by region. Conclusions: Lead exposure remains a public health problem in Mexico, particularly in the Central and South regions, and is strongly associated with the use of LGC.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.

Introduction: There are very few strategies for the early detection of the patients who might develop the severe form of the illness. Objective: To evaluate the utility of serum levels of some immune response mediators as early biomarkers for the severe dengue prognosis during the early phase of the illness. Materials and methods: Using a case-control design nested in a multicenter cohort from the AEDES network (a Colombian multicenter study), we compared TNF a, ST2, TRAIL and IDO levels in samples which were obtained during the early phase of the illness. Results: ST2, TRAIL and TNF a levels were higher in severe dengue patients compared with uncomplicated patients (p<0.0001), as follows: OR=24.8, CI95%= 6.1- 98.0; OR=18.0, CI95%= 4.6-69.1; OR=NC, CI95%= NC, respectively. We did not find statistically significant differences between IDO levels in severe dengue and uncomplicated dengue (p=1.000, OR=1.0, CI95%= 0.2-6.1). Conclusions: In the early phase of the dengue infection (96 hours), ST2, TRAIL and TNF a quantifications could contribute to the prediction of complications of the illness.
