ABSTRACT Background: The increase in agricultural production requires sustainable alternatives development for reusing the waste generated, such as bovine manure, to obtain ecological, environmental, and economic benefits. In addition, proper fertilization is one of the main steps in the production of forest species seedlings. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the effect of different substrates formulations based on bovine manure and types of fertilizers on the quality of C. montevidense seedlings and verify if the field confirms the nurseries’ responses. The treatments consisted of three BM-based substrates combinations (S0 - control, no manure; S30 - 30% BM; and S60 - 60% BM) and four types of base fertilizers [Control: no fertilizer, FRF - Fast Release Fertilizer (NPK + fritted trace elements), FRF2 - twice as used in FRF and CRF - Controlled Release Fertilizer]. The substrates quality and the seedlings’ morphophysiological attributes were determined 160 days after sowing, then conducting the best treatments to the field. Results: We verified that the use of bovine manure improved the physical and chemical properties of the substrates. For the C. montevidense cultivation, 30% BM plus CRF provided the best seedling development. The substrate used in the seedlings production influenced the post-planting performance of C. montevidense, and the bovine manure use allows for more significant plant growth in the field. Conclusion: For the cultivation of Citharexylum montevidense, it is recommended to use substrates composed of 30% of bovine manure, associated with 6 g L-1 of controlled-release fertilizer, as it provides higher quality seedlings in shorter production time in the nursery.

ABSTRACT Background: Direct sowing technique is considered a promising tool for reducing costs and increasing species diversity in restoration projects. However, several factors can limit its success, making it necessary for methodological adjustments to be made in order to maximize the emergence, establishment and initial growth of plants. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the use of fungus Trichoderma asperelloides and hydrogel in the enrichment direct sowing as a strategy to enrich the area in the initial restoration process. The forest species studied were Balfourodendron riedelianum, Cedrela fissilis, Luehea divaricata, Enterolobium contortisiliquum and Parapiptadenia rigida. The experiment was conducted in a factorial design testing absence or presence of the T. asperelloides and absence or presence of hydrogel. Two experiments were established: in the nursery, we evaluations of the emergence of the seedlings were carried out; in the field, we evaluated emergence, survival, height and stem diameter. Results: Under nursery conditions, inoculation and the use of hydrogel did not influence the emergence of species tested. Direct sowing proved to be a promising technique for the enrichment of young restoration plantations in subtropical regions with E. contortisiliquum, P. rigida and C. fissilis. B. riedelianum and L. divaricata seeds did not germinate in the field. Conclusion: The use of T. asperelloides is an efficient strategy to enhance the results of direct sowing, capable of providing higher rates of emergence for E. contortisiliqumm and P. rigida and maximizing the growth in height of E. contortisiliqumm. SUMMARY: The study aimed at characterizing the arboreal-shrubby component in fragments of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest, in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The vegetation survey was performed in four sampled fragments in 57 plots. In the plots, the identification of the individuals and measurement of circumference at breast height (CAP) was carried out, according to the following classes of size: Class I) arboreal strata, individuals with CAP ≥ 30 cm (10 x 20 m); Class II) arboreal strata, individuals with 15 ≤ CAP < 30 cm (10 x 10 m); Class III) established natural regeneration, individuals with 3 ≤ CAP < 15 cm (5 x 5 m) and Class IV) bank of seedlings, individuals with height ≥ 30 cm and CAP < 3 cm (2 x 2 m). The data of Class I constituted a matrix parcel x species, which was used in a multivariate analysis, allowing the classification of groups of plots that characterize microhabitats. The forest fragments presented low floristic richness of typical species of Mixed Ombrophilous Forest. From this environment highlight two main groups, one characteristic of riparian forest and the other from capões. In the riparian forests (GR1), highlighted Eugenia uruguayensis and Gymnanthes klotzschiana. In capões (GR2), the predominant species were Araucaria angustifolia, Podocarpus lambertii and Myrceugenia cucullata. The condition of species in different classes associated with their ecological characteristics allows identifying possible strategies for perpetuation of the arboreal-shrubby component of population and management of the fragments aiming at its conservation.

RESUMEN: El estudio tuvo como objetivo caracterizar el componente arbóreo-arbustivo en fragmentos de Bosque Umbrófilo Mixto. El relevamiento de la vegetación se realizó en cuatro fragmentos muestreados en 57 parcelas. Se identificaron los individuos y se midió la circunferencia a la altura del pecho (CAP), considerando las siguientes clases: Clase I) estrato arbóreo, CAP ≥ 30 cm (10 m x 20 m); Clase II) estrato arbóreo, 15 ≤ CAP < 30 cm (10 m x 10 m); Clase III) regeneración natural establecida, 3 ≤ CAP < 15 cm (5 m x 5 m) y clase IV) banco de plántulas, altura ≥ 30 cm y CAP < 3 cm (2 m x 2 m). Los datos del estrato arbóreo (Clase I) constituyeron una matriz de parcela x especie, la cual fue utilizada en análisis multivariado, permitiendo la clasificación de grupos de parcelas que caracterizan a los microhábitats. Los fragmentos de bosque en cumbres de la sierra presentaron baja riqueza florística de especies típicas del Bosque Umbrófilo Mixto. De este ambiente típico, se destacan dos grupos principales, uno característico de bosques de galería y el otro de bosques en islas (capões). En los bosques de galería (GR1), destacaron Eugenia uruguayensis y Gymnanthes klotzschiana. En los bosques en islas (GR2), las especies predominantes fueron Araucaria angustifolia, Podocarpus lambertii y Myrceugenia cucullata. La condición de especies en las diferentes clases asociadas a sus características ecológicas permite identificar posibles estrategias para perpetuar el componente arbóreo-arbustivo de las poblaciones y de fragmentos buscando su conservación.

Abstract In forest nurseries, one of the factors that change the growth and quality of seedlings is water supply, which has a direct influence on metabolic processes such as stomatal conductance and photochemical efficiency of photosystem II. This study aims to identify the influence of different watering regimes as well as the use of a water-retaining polymer on the initial growth and metabolic processes of Enterolobium contortisiliquum seedlings. The experimental design was in random blocks with a factorial scheme. Morphological attributes, as well as physiological and biochemical attributes were investigated. We verified that the performance of E. contortisiliquum seedlings depends on the watering regime provided to the plants; furthermore, up to 60 days after the application of the treatments, both the height and diameter of the collection and the leaf water potential were similar in the water regimes of 8 mm day-1 and 12 mm day-1.

ABSTRACT This study aims at identifying the formation of clusters and to evaluate the influence of chemical attributes in the soil on the groups and species in a riparian forest fragment in Campos de Cima da Serra, Rio Grande do Sul (RS). Thirteen plots (10 × 20 m) were demarcated to carry out the study. Forest inventory data were employed in a multivariate analysis using the Twinspan method and the correlation between vegetation data and chemical characterization of the soil was carried out by Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA). Thirty-one species were sampled (DBH ≥ 30 cm) and two floristic groups were identified. The results indicated a structural difference between the two environments, likely due to the steeper slope and less influence of groundwater. Variables such as sulfur, calcium and organic matter were explanatory of the vegetation grouping known as riparian forest of hillside and aluminum, aluminum saturation and copper of riparian forest with flat topography.

ABSTRACT The quantification of the hydric requirement during the production of quality seedlings is of extreme importance and the substrate used is a mediator of this influence. However, few studies are carried out in this context, particularly on native species such as Luehea divaricata, which has great potential for lumber production and the restoration of riparian forests. The aim of this study was to characterize the survival and growth of L. divaricata seedlings in different substrates and under different irrigation schemes. The experimental design used a factorial scheme composed of four formulations of substrate (100T: 100% turf (peat); 80T: 80% peat and 20% carbonized rice husk - CRH; 60T: 60% peat and 40% CRH; 40T: 40% peat and 60% CRH) and six irrigation schemes. Survival, height, stem diameter, aerial dry matter, root and total leaf area, and Dickson Quality Index were evaluated. We observed elevated survival, height, stem diameter, aerial dry matter, and leaf area under an irrigation of 16 mm. day-1 with substrates 100T and 80T. The dry matter and Dickson Quality Index, independent of the irrigation, resulted in greater carbon accumulation. Thus, we concluded that substrates based on peat, mixed with up to 20% CRH, allowed greater seedling growth, facilitating earlier hardening and expedition, under an irrigation scheme of 16 mm.day-1. L. divaricata is a native species that can be considered to have high hydric demand during the seedling production phase.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar diferentes substratos na germinação de sementes e emergência de plântulas de Luehea divaricata. O estudo foi realizado no Viveiro Florestal, DCFL, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria - RS. Os frutos foram coletados de oito árvores matrizes, no Morro do Cerrito, Santa Maria, em julho de 2010. Após o beneficiamento, as sementes permaneceram armazenadas em câmara fria, dentro de sacos de papel, por 4 meses, para o estudo de emergência de plântulas, e por 7 meses para a avaliação da germinação de sementes. Foram avaliados cinco substratos para germinação (T1: Rolo de papel; T2: Sobre papel mata-borrão; T3: Entre papel mata-borrão; T4: Sobre areia; T5: Sobre vermiculita) com quatro repetições, e quatro tratamentos para emergência (T1: 100% turfa; T2: 80% turfa e 20% casca de arroz carbonizada; T3: 60% turfa e 40% casca de arroz carbonizada; T4: 40% turfa e 60% casca de arroz carbonizada) com cinco repetições. Foi utilizado delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado. Foram analisadas as variáveis germinação (G), índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) e tempo médio de germinação (TMG) em laboratório e, para emergência, foi analisado o percentual de emergência (E), índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE) e tempo médio de emergência (TME) em viveiro. O início da germinação ocorreu no 6° dia, podendo a primeira contagem ser realizada aos 18 dias e as avaliações serem encerradas aos 35 dias após a instalação do experimento. Além disso, o substrato sobre vermiculita (T5) apresentou os percentuais mais altos de G e IVG, correspondendo a 42% e 0,678, respectivamente, enquanto que o T2 apresentou o menor TMG (14,80 dias). A emergência de plântulas teve início aos 21 dias após a semeadura, sendo finalizada aos 70 dias. Os tratamentos T1 e T2 apresentaram os maiores valores de E, 84,37%, 91,87%, respectivamente, diferindo estatisticamente de T3 e T4. Além disso, o tratamento T2 também apresentou os melhores valores de IVE (0,98) e TME (33,54 dias). Portanto, para germinação de sementes é indicado o substrato sobre vermiculita, e para emergência de plântulas, os substratos 100% turfa e a mistura de 80% turfa e 20% casca de arroz carbonizada.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate different substrates on seed germination and seedling emergence of Luehea divaricata. The study was conducted at the Viveiro Florestal, DCFL, Universidade Federal de Santa Maria, RS. The fruits were collected from eight mother trees in the Morro Cerrito, Santa Maria, in July 2010. After processing, the seeds were stored in cold storage in paper bags for 4 months for the study of emergence, and 7 months for the evaluation of seed germination. Five substrates were evaluated for germination (T1: Roll paper, T2: On blotting paper, T3: Between blotting paper, T4: On sand: T5: On vermiculite) with four replications and four treatments for emergency (T1 : 100% peat, T2: 80% peat and 20% carbonized rice husk, T3: 60% peat and 40% carbonized rice husk, T4: 40% peat and 60% carbonized rice husk) with five replicates. We used a randomized experimental design. Analyzed variables were: germination (G), germination speed index (GSI) and mean time to germination (TMG) in the laboratory, and emergence was analyzed by the percentage of emergency (E), speed of emergence index (SEI) and mean emergence time (TME) in the nursery. The onset of germination occurred on the 6th day, the first count could be performed at 18 days, and assessments closed 35 days after the experiment. Moreover, the substrate over vermiculite (T5) had the highest percentage of G and IVG, corresponding to 42% and 0,678, respectively, while that T2 had the lowest TMG (14.80 days). The seedling emergence began at 21 days after sowing, being terminated at 70 days. The T1 and T2 showed the highest values of E, 84.37%, 91.87%, respectively, differing from T3 and T4. Furthermore, treatment T2 also showed the higher values of IVE (0.98) and TME (33.54 days). Therefore, the substrate vermiculite is indicated for seeds germination, and for seedling emergence, the substrates 100% peat and the mixture of 80% peat and 20% carbonized rice husk.

RESUMO: Parapiptadenia rígida (angico-vermelho) é uma espécie arbórea nativa amplamente encontrada na região central e sul do Brasil, é indicada para restauração de áreas degradadas em virtude de sua alta plasticidade a gradientes de luz e facilidade de adaptação a ambientes degradados. No entanto, a espécie ainda carece de informações no que se refere a produção de mudas de qualidade, bem como, a utilização de forma racional dos recursos envolvidos. Dessa forma, esse estudo teve por objetivo avaliar os efeitos de diferentes substratos e regimes de rega no desenvolvimento de mudas de P. rigida . O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial com parcela subdividida, considerando quatro formulações de substratos (100% turfa; 80% turfa + 20% casca de arroz carbonizada (CAC); 60% turfa + 40% CAC; 40% turfa + 60% CAC) e seis regimes de rega (4; 8; 12; 16; 20 e 24mm.dia-1). Aos 180 dias após a emergência, foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros morfológicos: altura, diâmetro do coleto, relação altura e diâmetro do coleto, massa seca aérea, massa seca radicular, massa seca total e índice de qualidade de Dickson. Constatou-se que a utilização de substrato composto por 80% turfa + 20% casca de arroz carbonizada e/ou 100% turfa, combinado com o regime de rega de 4 mm.dia-1, proporcionam o maior crescimento das mudas de P. rigida.

ABSTRACT: Parapiptadenia rigida (angico-vermelho) is a native arboreal species widely found in central and southern Brazil and is indicated for restoration of degraded areas due to its high plasticity to light gradients and ease adaptation to degraded environments. However, there is still a lack of information on this species regarding the production of quality seedlings, as well as the rational use of the resources involved. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different substrates and irrigation schemes in the development of P. rigida seedlings. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, in a factorial scheme with split plots, with four substrate formulations (100% peat; 80% peat + 20% carbonized rice husk (CRH); 60% peat + 40% CRH; 40% peat + 60% CRH) and six irrigation schemes (4; 8; 12; 16; 20 and 24mm.day-1). At 180 days after emergence, the following parameters were evaluated: height, stem diameter, height and stem diameter ratio, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, total dry weight and Dickson Quality Index. Use of substrate composed of 80% peat + 20% carbonized rice husk and/or 100% peat, combined with irrigation scheme of 4mm day-1, resulted in the best growth of P. rigida seedlings.

RESUMO O presente trabalho teve como objetivo geral caracterizar a influência do solo e da topografia no componente arbóreo de fragmentos, no entorno do Reservatório Divisa, na região dos Campos de Cima da Serra, Sul do Brasil. O levantamento da vegetação foi realizado em quatro fragmentos, sendo em cada parcela (10 x 20 m) efetuada a identificação e medição da circunferência à altura do peito (CAP) dos indivíduos com CAP ≥ 30 cm. Os dados de vegetação foram submetidos à análise de agrupamento. Adicionalmente, foram obtidas as variáveis ambientais, como declividade média das parcelas e amostras de solo, na camada de 0-20 cm de profundidade. A correlação entre os dados ambientais e de vegetação foi realizada por meio da Análise de Correspondência Canônica. As características físicas do solo não apresentaram influência nos grupos formados e nas espécies. Nos capões, a constante presença do gado influenciou negativamente a estrutura do sub-bosque, assim como as características químicas do solo. Alumínio e saturação por alumínio apresentaram maior influência nas espécies predominantes da mata ciliar enquanto cobre e enxofre influenciaram as espécies presentes nos capões. Espécies como Araucaria angustifolia, Eugenia uruguayensis, Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Calyptranthes concinna, Lithraea brasiliensis, Myrsine coriacea, Ocotea pulchella e Sebastiania commersoniana são adaptadas à mata ciliar, podendo ser utilizadas na recuperação e enriquecimento desses ambientes.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to characterize the influence of the soil and topography in the tree component of the fragments, in around the Divisa Reservoir, in the region of the Campos de Cima da Serra, Southern Brazil. The vegetation survey was conducted in four fragments, with each plot (10 x 20 m) performed the identification and measurement of the circumference at breast height (CAP) of subjects with CAP ≥ 30 cm. The vegetation data were subjected to cluster analysis. In addition, environmental variables were obtained as an average slope of plots and soil samples at 0-20 cm depth. The correlation between vegetation data and environmental data was performed by means of Canonical Correspondence Analysis. The soil physical characteristics showed no influence on the groups formed and species. In the geldings, the constant presence of cattle influenced negatively the structure of the understory, as well as the chemical characteristics of the soil. Aluminium and aluminum saturation have higher influenced on the predominant species of riparian vegetation as influenced copper and sulfur species present in geldings. Species such as Araucaria angustifolia, Eugenia uruguayensis, Blepharocalyx salicifolius, Calyptranthes concinna, Lithraea brasiliensis, Myrsine coriacea, Ocotea pulchella and Sebastiania commersoniana are adapted to riparian and can be used in the recovery and enrichment of these environments.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar a evolução da restauração de duas áreas degradadas em unidade de conservação de proteção integral, no bioma Mata Atlântica, no Sul do Brasil. Foram avaliados atributos da composição florística e da estrutura da vegetação, assim como a atividade enzimática do solo (amidase, urease, fosfatase e arilsulfatase), envolvida em processos ecológicos, capazes de caracterizar diferentes áreas em restauração. A vegetação do estrato superior foi amostrada em 18 parcelas de 10 x 20 m em duas áreas recuperadas (A1 e A2) e em 12 parcelas em trecho de floresta utilizada como referência (AR). Nessas parcelas, o componente arbóreo-arbustivo foi medido quanto ao diâmetro, altura e cobertura de copa dos indivíduos, e a regeneração natural foi estudada em subparcelas, através da obtenção do diâmetro do coleto e da altura até 1,0 m. A atividade enzimática foi mensurada por meio da coleta de 10 amostras de solo, nas camadas de 0 a 5 cm e de 5 a 20 cm, em cada área. Os resultados evidenciaram que as áreas em restauração apresentaram menor diversidade (H' = 2,31), em comparação com a área de referência (H' = 3,00), bem como menores valores de área basal, altura e densidade. Conclui-se que a atividade enzimática é um bom indicador para o desenvolvimento em ambas as áreas restauradas, que comparado à área de referência, ocorrerá a longo prazo, indicando a necessidade de manejo de A1 e A2, por meio da eliminação de gramíneas e espécies arbóreas exóticas, fator determinante para o sucesso da restauração.

The present study aimed to evaluate the evolution of the restoration of degraded areas, in full protection conservation unit in the Atlantic Forest biome, in southern Brazil. The evaluated attributes were floristic composition and structure of vegetation and soil enzymatic activity (amidase, urease, phosphatase and arylsulfatase), involved in ecological processes, able to characterize different areas in restoration. The vegetation of the upper stratum was sampled in 18 plots of 10 x 20 m, in two recovered areas (A1 and A2), and in 12 plots in a forest area used as reference (AR). In these plots, the tree-shrub component was measured as for the diameter, height and canopy coverage of individuals and natural regeneration was studied in subplots, through the obtention of the root collar diameter and height. The enzyme activity was measured through the collection of 10 soil samples, in layers ranging from 0 to 5 cm and 5 to 20 cm in each area. The results showed that the areas in restoration presented lower diversity (H' = 2.31) when compared to the reference area (H' = 3.00), as well as lowest basal area, height and density. It is concluded that the enzyme activity is a good indicator for the development in both areas restored, which compared to the reference area, will occur in the long term, indicating the need for management of A1 and A2, by eliminating grasses and exotic tree species, the determining factor for the success of the restoration.
