Foreword The presence of formaldehyde at workplace remains significant. Exposure to it results in local irritation of the eye, nose and upper respiratory tract mucous membranes, and it has been chronically related to a higher risk of cancer development at the paranasal sinuses, naso-oropharynx and lungs. The aim of our work has been the updating of the bibliography and the categorization of the most up to date scientific evidence of formaldehyde effects on human body. Bibliographic search on the electronic database Medline / PubMed, restricted to the last 10 years through a combination of free and controlled language.Review of 185 scientific articles, finally including 54 due to duplicity, language, and inclusion criteria. We find among the main results a major evidence regarding genotoxicity; limited, inconsistent, and contradictory evidence regarding various neoplastic pathologies; and lack of evidence regarding bronchial asthma. Further studies have to be carried out, especially longitudinal studies and greater epidemiological power, to generate new knowledge about the behavior of this toxic.

Resum Introducció: La presència del formaldehid a l’àmbit laboral segueix sent important. L’exposició produeix irritació local de mucoses, com ara les oculars, nasals i del tracte respiratori superior i de manera crònica s’ha associat amb un major risc de desenvolupar càncer a nivell de mucosa i sinus paranasals, naso-orofaringe i pulmó. L’objectiu del nostre treball ha estat actualitzar la bibliografia i categoritzar l’evidència científica més actualitzada dels efectes que el formaldehid produeix sobre l’organisme humà. Mètode: Revisió de la literatura utilitzant la metodologia “scoping review”. Cerca bibliogràfica a la base de dades electrònica Medline/ PubMed, limitada als darrers 10 anys mitjançant combinació de llenguatge lliure i controlat. Anàlisi efectuada per un col.lectiu de Metges especialistes en medicina del treball, pertanyents a l’àmbit sanitari i que també han comptat amb la participació d’higienistes i altres professionals de la prevenció de riscos. Resultats: Revisió de 185 articles, amb inclusió final de 54 un cop descartats per duplicitat, idioma i criteris d’inclusió. Entre els principals resultats es troba un elevat grau d’evidència referida a genotoxicitat, evidència contradictòria, inconsistent o limitada pel que fa a diverses patologies neoplàsiques d’origen hematopoiètic, laringe, naso-sinusals o de pulmó i manca d’evidència sobre la relació amb l’asma bronquial. Conclusions: La revisió mostra un canvi de paradigma dels efectes del formaldehid sobre l’organisme humà, amb dades que qüestionen els efectes tòxics clàssicament admesos. Cal efectuar nous estudis, especialment amb caràcter longitudinal i major potència epidemiològica, per generar nou coneixement sobre el comportament d’aquest tòxic.

Resumen La presencia del formaldehido en el ámbito laboral sigue siendo importante. La exposición produce irritación local de mucosas oculares, nasales y del tracto respiratorio superior, y crónicamente se ha asociado con mayor riesgo de desarrollar cáncer a nivel de senos paranasales, naso-orofaringe y pulmón. Esta revisión tiene por objetivo actualizar la bibliografía y categorizar la evidencia científica más actualizada de los efectos que el formaldehido produce sobre el organismo humano. Búsqueda bibliográfica en la base de datos electrónica Medline/PubMed, limitada a los últimos 10 años mediante combinación de lenguaje libre y controlado. Se revisaron 185 artículos con inclusión final de 54 tras descartar por duplicidad, idioma y criterios de inclusión. Se observa un elevado grado de evidencia respecto a la genotoxicidad, evidencia contradictoria, inconsistente o limitada respecto a patologías neoplásicas de origen hematopoyético, laringe, naso-sinusales o de pulmón y falta de evidencia sobre la relación con el asma bronquial. Es preciso efectuar nuevos estudios, especialmente con carácter longitudinal y mayor potencia epidemiológica, para generar nuevo conocimiento sobre el comportamiento de este tóxico.

ABSTRACT Poultry farmers in the southeastern of Mexico consider that the productivity of the hens that comes from rearing on floor has a higher productive performance than reared hens in cages, mainly due to higher percentage of egg laying and lower mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the productive performance of the laying hen in relation to the type of rearing. A total of 79680 pullets Bovans White of 17 weeks of age were housed in cages with five pullets cage-1 (405 cm2pullet-1). They were divided in two treatments according to their type of rearing (floor vs cage) with four replicates. The study period was from week 20 to week 40 of age. The variables evaluated were daily (%) and cumulative mortality (%), egg production (%), egg weight (g), feed intake (g pullet d-1), cumulative feed intake (g pullet-1), daily and cumulative egg mass, number of eggs per hen housed, egg loss (%) and productivity index. The variables were analyzed using a randomized block design. It was observed that daily and cumulative mortality, feed intake and egg loss was higher (p< 0.05), while the number of eggs per hen housed and productivity index (p< 0.05) was lower for hens in cages. We conclude that it is possible to associate detriments in the productive performance of laying hens based on the type of housing during its growth phase.

ABSTRACT Salmonella enterica is a large group of Gram-negative bacteria responsible for a number of foodborne infections associated with the consumption of contaminated poultry products. The hygienic status of raw chicken meat marketed at Ibague, Tolima, Colombia, is currently unknown. To address this issue, a cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella spp., in raw chicken marketed at different outlets in this city. Salmonella spp. was isolated by standard microbiological methods, followed by biochemical, serological, and molecular confirmation. Additionally, risk factors associated with the presence of the bacteria were identified. The prevalence of Salmonella in raw chicken was 17.41% (47/270), and 14 different serotypes were found, out of which S. Paratyphi B (36.17%), S. Hvittingfoss (19.15%) and S. Muenster (10.64%) were the most prevalent and represented 65.95% of all serotypes. Amplification of 284 bp of the invA gene was achieved by PCR in a number of randomly selected isolates. Raw chicken as the only type of meat sold at stores (odds ratio: 2,157, p<0.05), and stainless steel as a contact surface of chicken meat (odds ratio: 13,29, p<0.05), were found to be potential risk factors for the presence of Salmonella in chicken meat. This work serves as a reference about the current status of Salmonella in chicken meat marketed in Ibague, Tolima, Colombia, and indicates the need to establish appropriate control and contingency measures to minimize the presence of the bacteria in raw chicken to prevent its transmission to humans.

Mechanical-Magnetogastrography (M-MGG) is a technique that has been used to measure gastric emptying in healthy subjects and patients with gastrointestinal pathologies. This has allowed implementing a non-invasive technology, free of ionizing-radiation and it may be used in diagnostic tests in clinical medicine. The characterization of a phantom which has a magnetic behavior similar to that observed in gastric emptying studies carried out in persons is presented. A fluxgate magnetometer was used to record the signal in a magnetic unshielded room. Phantom included nine identical deposits prepared with magnetite, Fe3O4 and flour. The behavior of the experiment is identical to studies previously reported in evaluations of healthy people and patients.

La magnetogastrografía mecánica (M-MGG) es una técnica que ha sido usada para medir el vaciado gástrico en pacientes sanos y pacientes con patologías gastrointestinales. Esto ha permitido la implementación de una tecnología no invasiva, libre de radiación ionizante que puede ser utilizada para pruebas clínicas en medicina. En este artículo, la caracterización de un «phantom» que tiene un comportamiento magnético similar a los estudios realizados para el proceso de vaciado gástrico es presentada. Un magnetómetro de flujo magnético fue utilizado para registrar la señal en un cuarto sin aislamiento magnético. El «phantom» incluyó depósitos idénticos preparados con magnetita, Fe3O4 y flúor. El comportamiento de los experimentos obtenidos es idéntico a estudios previamente reportados en las evaluaciones de personas sanas y pacientes con alguna patología.

The cruciate ligaments are the ligamentous structure of the knee, which function as a joint stabilizer. It is known that the anterior cruciate ligaments are the most commonly injured ligaments of the knee, and are typically removed during total knee replacement. Also, that exists a limitation of existing grafts which has have motivated the investigation of tissue-engineered anterior cruciate ligament grafts. These investigations include different types of scaffold design. Although these designs have exhibited comparable behavior as natural anterior cruciate ligaments, still there is no commercially available synthetic graft that could achieve fully the mechanical properties of natural ones. In this paper it is attempted to accomplish this goal by introducing the design of cruciate ligaments based on the similarity between the mechanical behavior of the cruciate ligaments and the mechanical behavior of bridge cables, which allows one to apply the theory of the latter to propose an arrangement of braided threads of polyethylene and polypropylene. Mechanical tests on the proposed model show that the mechanical behavior of the designed cables is similar to the cruciate ligaments. The observed differences in stress-strain curves showed an average error of 10.08% for the anterior cruciate ligaments ACL and 9.99% for the posterior cruciate ligaments PCL.

Los ligamentos cruzados son las estructuras ligamentosas de la rodilla que tienen la función de darle estabilidad a la misma. Se sabe que los ligamentos cruzados anteriores son la estructura de la articulación de la rodilla que más comúnmente se ve afectada por alguna lesión y suelen retirase cuando se realiza una intervención quirúrgica de reemplazo total de rodilla. Por otro lado, existe una limitación en el número de implantes disponibles para las prótesis de rodilla, lo que ha impulsado el desarrollo de nuevas investigaciones en el área de la ingeniería de tejidos. En estas investigaciones se han creado nuevos tipos de andamios para tejido. A pesar de que estos andamios han demostrado comportarse en cierto modo como los ligamentos cruzados de origen natural, no existe un andamio a nivel comercial que pueda ser utilizado con confianza dado que no reproducen completamente las propiedades mecánicas de los ligamentos. En este artículo, se presenta un desarrollo que trata cumplir este objetivo a partir de las similitudes en el comportamiento mecánico de los ligamentos cruzados y de los cables puentes a base de cables. Esta idea permite usar las ideas de esta última para proponer una serie de hilos trenzados de polietileno y polipropileno. Las pruebas mecánicas realizadas en este tipo de arreglos y en ligamentos cruzados dieron resultados muy similares. Las diferencias observadas en las curvas tensión-estrés mostraron un error promedio de 10.8 % para los ligamentos cruzados anteriores y de 9.99% para los ligamentos cruzados posteriores.
