ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to characterize reference bacteria strains, belonging to the genus Bacillus and species of correlated genera, by simplified morphological and biochemical methods. The morphological characterization is based on the aspects of the colonies, as well as cytomorphology of the species, by optical and scanning microscopy. For biochemical characterization, the sensitivity test to antimicrobials by disk-diffusion is performed. Moreover, the strains were characterized by extracting intracellular proteins. Characteristics such as shape, color, and consistency of the colonies, in addition to the type of spore and production of protein crystals were determinants for the morphological characterization of these species. The antibiogram revealed high resistance to β-lactam group antibiotics, in species of Bacillus cereus s.l group. In Bacillus subtilis s.l. group there was high susceptibility to antibiograms, mainly for species of B. subtilis. The protein profile provided specific protein patterns for some species, mainly bands of 130 e 65 kDa for B. thuringiensis, 140 e 130 kDa for Lysinibacillus sphaericus, and 115 kDa for Brevibacillus laterosporus. Our results showed that the morphological and biochemical characterizations, provided a simple identification, with easy interpretation, and low cost.

RESUMO No presente trabalho, foi avaliado o efeito imunomodulador de diferentes doses de talidomida em macrófagos associados ao tumor (TAMs), em um modelo murino de câncer de mama. Camundongos foram inoculados com células 4T1, na região do flanco esquerdo, e tratados com talidomida, uma vez ao dia, nas doses de 50, 100 e 150mg/k, por massa corporal, do quinto dia ao 28º dia de inoculação tumoral. Os tumores foram medidos, o índice de proliferação celular e a contagem de TAMs foram avaliados nos tumores primários e nos pulmões com metástases. Além disso, a taxa de metástases pulmonares também foi avaliada. A talidomida na dose de 150mg/kg diminuiu significativamente o crescimento tumoral, o índice de proliferação celular e a infiltração de TAMs nos tumores primários. Por outro lado, maior número de TAMs e menor índice de proliferação celular foram observados nos pulmões metastáticos, em camundongos tratados com 150mg/kg de talidomida. Ademais, a talidomida na dose de 150mg/kg diminuiu significativamente os nódulos metastáticos nos pulmões. Os resultados demonstraram que o tratamento com talidomida diminuiu o crescimento tumoral e as metástases pulmonares em camundongos, associado com diferentes efeitos na infiltração de TAMs nesses locais.

ABSTRACT The present work evaluated the immunomodulatory effect of thalidomide (Thal) at different doses on tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) using a mouse model of human breast cancer. Mice were inoculated with 4T1 cells in the left flank and treated with Thal once a day at concentrations of 50, 100, and 150mg/kg body weight from the 5th day until the 28th day of tumor inoculation. The tumors were sized, proliferation index and TAMs count were evaluated in primary tumors and metastatic lungs. In addition, the metastasis rate was evaluated in the lungs. Thal at 150mg/kg significantly decreased tumor growth, proliferation index, and TAMs infiltration in primary tumors. Conversely, a higher number of TAMs and lower proliferation index were observed in metastatic lungs in mice treated with 150mg/kg of Thal. Furthermore, Thal at 150mg/kg significantly decreased the metastatic nodules in the lungs. Our findings demonstrated that Thal treatment considerably decreased the primary tumor and lung metastasis in mice associated with different TAM infiltration effects in these sites.

ABSTRACT A dog with 32 specimens of Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato were examined at the DNA level to determine the presence of Borrelia spp., Anaplasma platys, Ehrlichia spp., and Babesia spp. A partial sequence of A. platys gene gltA (689 bp) was detected in the dog’s blood and three ticks (9.37 %). This is the first detection of A. platys in a young dog with symptoms and an animal’s R. sanguineus s.l. ticks in the city of Salta in northwest Argentina.

RESUMEN Se examinó un perro con 32 especímenes de Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato a nivel de ADN, para determinar la presencia de Borrelia spp., Anaplasma platys, Ehrlichia spp. y Babesia spp. Se detectó una secuencia parcial del gen gltA (689 pb) de A. platys en la sangre del perro y en tres garrapatas (9,37 %). Esta es la primera detección de A. platys en animales jóvenes y enfermos y en R. sanguineus s.l y garrapatas en la ciudad de Salta, en el noroeste de Argentina.

Resumo No presente trabalho, os efeitos de dois diferentes produtos foram avaliados - Metarril® SP Organic (conídios secos) e Metarril® SC Organic (conídios concentrados em óleo vegetal) - para ovos, larvas e fêmeas ingurgitadas de Rhipicephalus microplus. Três concentrações (108, 107 e 106 conídios mL-1) para cada produto foram preparadas em água + Tween® 80 0,1% (v/v); os bioensaios foram realizados para todos os estágios de R. microplus por imersão nas suspensões (Metarril® SP) ou formulações (Metarril® SC). Metarril® SP não afetou os parâmetros biológicos das fêmeas, demonstrando assim baixa eficácia; para ovos e larvas, foram observadas discretas diminuições na eclodibilidade e na população de larvas. Apesar de um atraso na germinação, Metarril® SC apresentou melhores resultados; para as fêmeas, foram detectadas reduções no Peso da Massa de Ovos (PMO) e no Índice de Produção de Ovos (IPO). Para os ovos, a concentração de 108 conídios mL-1 aumentou o Período de Incubação (PI), reduziu o Período de Eclosão (PE) e também o da eclodibilidade em até 61%; para larvas, 107 e 108 conídios mL-1 atingiram 99,6 e 100% de mortalidade larval, respectivamente, 10 dias após a exposição fúngica. Com isso, estudos adicionais que envolvem o uso de formulações à base de óleo para carrapatos, como Metarril® SC, precisam ser realizados, especialmente para controlar os estágios mais suscetíveis (ovos e larvas).

Abstract The effects of two different products - Metarril® SP Organic (dry conidia) and Metarril® SC Organic (emulsifiable concentrated conidia in vegetable oil) - on eggs, larvae and Rhipicephalus microplus engorged females were here explored. Three concentrations (108, 107, and 106 conidia mL-1) for both products were prepared in water + 0.1% Tween® 80 (v/v); afterward, bioassays were carried out for all R. microplus stages by immersion in suspensions (Metarril® SP) or formulations (Metarril® SC). Metarril® SP suspensions showed low efficacy and did not affect biological parameters of treated engorged females; for eggs and larvae, only slight decreases in hatchability and larvae population were observed. Despite a delay in germination, Metarril® SC presented better results; for females, reductions in Egg Mass Weight (EMW) and Egg Production Index (EPI) were reported. On eggs, 108 conidia mL-1 increased Incubation Period (IP), shortened Hatching Period (HP) and decreased hatchability by up to 61%; for larvae, 107 and 108 conidia mL-1 reached 99.6 and 100% larval mortality respectively, 10 days after fungal exposure. Thus, further studies involving the use of oil-based formulations for ticks such as Metarril® SC need to be performed, especially to control the most susceptible stages (eggs and larvae).

Resumo Os objetivos do presente estudo foram realizar um levantamento sorológico de cães, cavalos e humanos altamente expostos a picadas de carrapatos para anticorpos anti-B. burgdorferi s.l., identificar as espécies de carrapatos presentes, e determinar os fatores de risco associados a soropositividade em um assentamento rural do Estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil. Oitenta e sete residentes foram amostrados junto com seus respectivos 83 cães e 118 cavalos e questionários individuais foram aplicados. O teste de imunofluorescência indireta (IFI) foi realizado nas amostras sorológicas e as positivas foram submetidas a análise por western blot (WB). Anticorpos anti-B. burgdorferi foram detectados em 4/87 (4,6%) humanos, 26/83 (31,3%) cães e 7/18 (38,9%) cavalos pela IFI, com 4/4 humanos também positivos pelo WB. Os carrapatos identificados foram em sua maioria de cães e incluíram 45/67 Rhipicephalus sanguineus, 21/67 Amblyomma ovale e 1/67 A. cajennense sensu lato. Todos (34/34) carrapatos dos cavalos foram identificados como A. cajennense s.l.. Não foram observadas diferenças estatísticas entre idade, sexo ou presença de carrapatos e soropositividade para Borrelia sp. Em conclusão, embora anticorpos anti-Borrelia tenham sido encontrados em cães, equinos e seus proprietários do assentamento rural, a ausência de isolamento, caracterização molecular, ausência de vetores competentes e baixa especificidade do kit comercial de WB utilizado podem ter limitado a análise de fatores de risco.

Abstract The aims of the present study were to serosurvey dogs, horses, and humans highly exposed to tick bites for anti-Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. antibodies, identify tick species present, and determine risk factors associated with seropositivity in a rural settlement of Paraná State, southern Brazil. Eighty-seven residents were sampled, along with their 83 dogs and 18 horses, and individual questionnaires were administered. Immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) was performed on serum samples and positive samples were subjected to western blot (WB) analysis. Anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies were found in 4/87 (4.6%) humans, 26/83 (31.3%) dogs, and 7/18 (38.9%) horses by IFAT, with 4/4 humans also positive by WB. Ticks identified were mostly from dogs and included 45/67 Rhipicephalus sanguineus, 21/67 Amblyomma ovale, and 1/67 A. cajennense sensu lato. All (34/34) horse ticks were identified as A. cajennense s.l.. No significant association was found when age, gender, or presence of ticks was correlated to seropositivity to Borrelia sp. In conclusion, although anti-Borrelia antibodies have been found in dogs, horses and their owners from the rural settlement, the lack of isolation, molecular characterization, absence of competent vectors and the low specificity of the commercial WB kit used herein may have impaired risk factor analysis.

High salt intake is related to an increase in blood pressure and development of hypertension. However, currently, there are no national representative data in Brazil using the gold standard method of 24-h urine collection to measure sodium consumption. This study aimed to determine salt intake based on 24-h urine collection in a sample of 272 adults of both genders and to correlate it with blood pressure levels. We used a rigorous protocol to assure an empty bladder prior to initiating urine collection. We excluded subjects with a urine volume <500 mL, collection period outside of an interval of 23-25 h, and subjects with creatinine excretion that was not within the range of 14.4-33.6 mg/kg (men) and 10.8-25.2 mg/kg (women). The mean salt intake was 10.4±4.1 g/day (d), and 94% of the participants (98% of men and 90% of women) ingested more than the recommended level of 5 g/d. We found a positive association between salt and body mass index (BMI) categories, as well as with salt and blood pressure, independent of age and BMI. The difference in systolic blood pressure reached 13 mmHg between subjects consuming less than 6 g/d of salt and those ingesting more than 18 g/d. Subjects with hypertension had a higher estimated salt intake than normotensive subjects (11.4±5.0 vs 9.8±3.6 g/d, P<0.01), regardless of whether they were under treatment. Our data indicate the need for interventions to reduce sodium intake, as well the need for ongoing, appropriate monitoring of salt consumption in the general population.

O presente estudo objetivou realizar o levantamento florístico das espécies da tribo Paniceae s.l. na Reserva Biológica de Mogi-Guaçu (RBMG-SP), localizada entre 22°11'-18'S e 47°7'-10'W, com o intuito de contribuir para o conhecimento da flora agrostológica desta Unidade de Conservação e do Estado de São Paulo. As coletas foram realizadas entre 2011 e 2012, totalizando 11 expedições. Foram consultadas as coleções dos herbários IAC, SP, SPF e UEC. Foi confirmada a ocorrência de 24 gêneros e 80 espécies para a RBMG-SP. Destas, 47 espécies são referidas pela primeira vez, 15 são exóticas e 12 são classificadas como ameaçadas no Estado. Os gêneros mais ricos em espécies são Paspalum (25 spp.), Panicum e Axonopus (7 spp. cada), Digitaria (6 spp.), Ichnanthus e Urochloa (4 spp. cada). São apresentadas chaves de identificação, comentários e imagens das estruturas florais de cada táxon.

The present study aimed to survey the species of Paniceae s.l. in the Reserva Biológica de Mogi-Guaçu (RBMG-SP), located between 22°11'-18'S and 47°7'-10'W, in order to increase the knowledge of the grass flora of this conservation unit and of São Paulo State. The field trips were conducted between 2011 and 2012, comprising 11 expeditions. Specimens from the herbaria IAC, SP, SPF, and UEC were consulted. We confirmed the occurrence of 24 genera and 80 species for RBMG-SP. From these, 47 species are newly reported, 15 species are exotic, and 12 species are classified as threatened in the state. The richest genera are Paspalum (25 spp.), Panicum and Axonopus (7 spp. each), Digitaria (6 spp.), Ichnanthus and Urochloa (4 spp. each). Identification keys, comments, and images of the floral structures of each taxon are presented.

A microbiota presente em larvas de Stomoxys calcitrans pode auxiliar na sua sobrevivência em ambientes contaminados, devido à produção de substâncias inibidoras. Métodos bacteriológicos de identificação, reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) e microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV) foram utilizados para detectar uma bactéria naturalmente presente no muco e macerado de larvas de S. calcitrans. A atividade antifúngica foi baseada nos resultados obtidos no teste de difusão em meio sólido artificial. A bactéria foi identificada como Stenotrophomonas maltophilia e apresentou atividade antifúngica contra os isolados CG 138, CG 228 e ESALQ 986 deBeauveria bassiana sensu lato. Estes resultados sugerem que a microbiota larval é um fator que pode comprometer o uso de B. bassiana s.l. no controle biológico de larvas de S. calcitrans.

The microbiota present in Stomoxys calcitrans larvae may assist their survival in contaminated environments through production of inhibitory substances. Bacteriological identification methods, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to detect a bacterium naturally present in mucus and maceratedS. calcitrans larvae. The antifungal activity was determined based on the results from disk diffusion tests on an artificial solid medium. The bacterium was identified as Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and presented antifungal activity againstBeauveria bassiana sensu lato isolates CG 138, CG 228 and ESALQ 986. This result suggests that the larval microbiota is a factor that can compromise the use of B. bassiana s.l. fungus for biological control of S. calcitrans larvae.

O objetivo desse estudo foi investigar se o TGF-β afeta a sobrevivência, ativação e crescimento de folículos primordiais caprinos inclusos no córtex ovariano após o cultivo in vitro. Ovários de cabras foram coletados em abatedouro e fragmentos de tecido ovariano foram cultivados por um e sete dias em meio essencial mínimo alfa (α-MEM+) sozinho ou suplementado com TGF-β (1, 5, 10 ou 50ng/mL). Fragmentos ovarianos não cultivados e cultivados foram processados para análise histológica e ultraestrutural. Os resultados mostraram que, comparado ao controle fresco, houve diminuição no percentual de folículos morfologicamente normais em todos os tratamentos somente após sete dias de cultivo. O TGF-β não afetou a ativação folicular independente da concentração testada, contudo, o diâmetro folicular foi superior (P<0.05) no tratamento com 10ng/mL de TGF-β quando comparado ao controle fresco e aos demais tratamentos. Além disso, essa mesma concentração manteve a ultraestrutura normal dos folículos após sete dias de cultivo. Em conclusão, o TGF-β apresentou efeito adicional no crescimento folicular e na manutenção da integridade ultraestrutural de folículos pré-antrais caprinos inclusos no tecido ovariano quando utilizado na concentração de 10ng/mL durante sete dias de cultivo.

The objectives of this study were to investigate whether TGF-β affect the survival, activation and further growth of goat primordial follicles enclosed in ovarian cortex after in vitro culture. Goat ovaries were collected from an abattoir and pieces of ovarian tissues were cultured for one or seven days in a supplemented alpha Minimum Essential Medium, alone or containing TGF-β (1, 5, 10 or 50ng/mL). Ovarian tissues from the fresh control as well as those cultured were processed for histological and ultrastructural studies. The results showed that when compared with fresh control, there was decrease in the percentages of histologically normal follicles in all treatments only after seven days culture. TGF-β did not affect the activation of preantral follicles regardless of its concentration, however, larger follicles diameter (P<0.05) was observed using 10ng/mL TGF-β than in the fresh control and other treatments. Moreover, this concentration maintained the normal ultrastructure after seven days of culture. In conclusion, TGF-β showed additional effect on the follicle growth and the maintenance of ultrastructural integrity of goat preantral follicles enclosed in ovarian tissue when used at 10ng/mL during seven days of culture.

Low-sodium and high-potassium diets have been recommended as an adjunct to prevention and treatment of hypertension. Analysis of these nutrients in 24-h urine has been considered the reference method to estimate daily intake of these minerals. However, 24-h urine collection is difficult in epidemiological studies, since urine must be collected and stored in job environments. Therefore, strategies for shorter durations of urine collection at home have been proposed. We have previously reported that collecting urine during a 12-h period (overnight) is more feasible and that creatinine clearance correlated strongly with that detected in 24-h samples. In the present study, we collected urine for 24 h divided into two 12-h periods (from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm and from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am next day). A sample of 109 apparently healthy volunteers aged 30 to 74 years of both genders working in a University institution was investigated. Subjects with previous myocardial infarction, stroke, renal insufficiency, and pregnant women were not included. Significant (P < 0.001) Spearman correlation coefficients (r s) were found between the total amount of sodium and potassium excreted in the urine collected at night and in the 24-h period (r s = 0.76 and 0.74, respectively). Additionally, the 12-h sodium and potassium excretions (means ± SD, 95% confidence interval) corresponded to 47.3 ± 11.2%, 95%CI = 45.3-49.3, and 39.3 ± 4.6%, 95%CI = 37.3-41.3, respectively, of the 24-h excretion of these ions. Therefore, these findings support the assumption that 12-h urine collected at night can be used as a reliable tool to estimate 24-h intake/excretion of sodium and potassium.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a melhor época de aplicação de dessecantes, de forma a permitir antecipação da colheita sem prejudicar a produtividade e qualidade de sementes de soja. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial (3x3) + 1, com quatro repetições. Um dos fatores foi constituído pelos herbicidas dessecantes paraquat, glufosinato de amônio e glyphosate, nas doses de 400, 400 e 960 g i.a. ha-1, respectivamente. Outro fator constituiu-se de três estádios de aplicação dos herbicidas, via pulverização (R6, R7.2 e R8.1). Avaliaram-se a antecipação da colheita, massa de 100 sementes, produtividade, germinação e vigor das sementes. A utilização de herbicidas, aliada aos estádios fenológicos de aplicação, permitiu antecipar a colheita de um a seis dias. A dessecação de plantas de soja em pré-colheita com os herbicidas nos diferentes estádios fenológicos não afetou a produtividade. O herbicida glufosinato de amônio reduziu a germinação de sementes de soja quando aplicado no estádio R6. O herbicida glyphosate reduziu o vigor das sementes de soja quando aplicado nos estádios R6 e R7.2. O herbicida paraquat promoveu os melhores índices de germinação e vigor de sementes de soja quando utilizado nos estádios R6 e R7.2.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the best time to apply desiccants to allow earlier harvesting without compromising seed quality and yield of soybean plants. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design in a factorial scheme (3x3) + 1, with four replications. One factor was composed of the desiccant herbicides paraquat, glufosinate ammonium, and glyphosate at doses of 400, 400, and 960 g a.i. ha-1, respectively. The other factor was constituted of three phenological herbicide application stages (R6, R7.2, and R8.1). Harvest anticipation, mass of 100 seeds, yield, germination, and seed vigor were evaluated. The use of herbicides combined with the phenological application stages allowed to anticipate harvest from one to six days. Desiccation of the soybean plants in pre-harvest using herbicides at different phenological stages did not affect yield. Glufosinate ammonium reduced the germination of soybean seeds when applied at R6. Glyphosate reduced the vigor of soybean seeds when applied at R6 and R7.2.

O uso milenar de plantas medicinais mostrou ao longo dos anos, que determinadas plantas apresentam substâncias potencialmente perigosas. Do ponto de vista científico, algumas pesquisas mostraram que muitas dessas plantas possuem substâncias agressivas e por essa razão devem ser utilizadas com cuidado, respeitando seus riscos toxicológicos. Os efeitos mais preocupantes do uso indiscriminado de plantas medicinais são embriotóxico, teratogênico e abortivo, uma vez, que os constituintes da planta podem atravessar a placenta, chegar ao feto e gerar um desses efeitos. Este estudo objetiva fornecer uma listagem das principais plantas medicinais que tenham efeitos embriotóxicos, teratogênicos e abortivos comprovados, conhecendo as partes da planta utilizadas e seus respectivos nomes científicos, com a finalidade de alertar gestantes quanto aos riscos de seu uso. Realizou-se buscas nas bases eletrônicas de dados SciELO, PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS, CAPES e Google acadêmico. Nos resultados encontrados, plantas como Arnica (Arnica montana), Artemísia (Artemisia vulgaris), Arruda (Ruta chalepensis/ Ruta graveolens), Barbatimão (Stryphnodendron polyphyllum), Boldo (Vernonia condensata) dentre outras, podem vir a gerar um desses efeitos. A partir deste estudo comprova-se que para a maioria das plantas medicinais não há dados a respeito da segurança de seu uso durante a gravidez.

The ancient use of medicinal plants has shown over the years that certain plants have potentially dangerous substances. From a scientific point of view, some studies have shown that many of these plants contain aggressive substances and therefore should be used with caution, respecting their toxicological risks. The most important effects of the indiscriminate use of medicinal plants are embryotoxic, teratogenic and abortifacient since the plant constituents can cross the placenta, reaching the fetus and leading to one of these effects. This study aimed to provide a list of the major medicinal plants that have proven embryotoxic, teratogenic and abortifacient effects, including the used plant parts and their respective scientific names, in order to warn pregnant women about the risks of its use. Searches were carried out in the electronic databases SciELO, PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS, CAPES and Google Scholar. Results indicated that plants such as mountain arnica (Arnica montana), mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), fringed rue (Ruta chalepensis / Ruta graveolens), "Barbatimão" (Stryphnodendron polyphyllum) and "Boldo" (Vernonia condensata) are likely to generate such an effect. This study shows that for most medicinal plants there are not data regarding the safety of their use during pregnancy.

Heart rate variability (HRV) provides important information about cardiac autonomic modulation. Since it is a noninvasive and inexpensive method, HRV has been used to evaluate several parameters of cardiovascular health. However, the internal reproducibility of this method has been challenged in some studies. Our aim was to determine the intra-individual reproducibility of HRV parameters in short-term recordings obtained in supine and orthostatic positions. Electrocardiographic (ECG) recordings were obtained from 30 healthy subjects (20-49 years, 14 men) using a digital apparatus (sampling ratio = 250 Hz). ECG was recorded for 10 min in the supine position and for 10 min in the orthostatic position. The procedure was repeated 2-3 h later. Time and frequency domain analyses were performed. Frequency domain included low (LF, 0.04-0.15 Hz) and high frequency (HF, 0.15-0.4 Hz) bands. Power spectral analysis was performed by the autoregressive method and model order was set at 16. Intra-subject agreement was assessed by linear regression analysis, test of difference in variances and limits of agreement. Most HRV measures (pNN50, RMSSD, LF, HF, and LF/HF ratio) were reproducible independent of body position. Better correlation indexes (r > 0.6) were obtained in the orthostatic position. Bland-Altman plots revealed that most values were inside the agreement limits, indicating concordance between measures. Only SDNN and NNv in the supine position were not reproducible. Our results showed reproducibility of HRV parameters when recorded in the same individual with a short time between two exams. The increased sympathetic activity occurring in the orthostatic position probably facilitates reproducibility of the HRV indexes.

This study evaluated the effects of chronic treadmill training on body mass gain and visceral fat accumulation in overfed rats. Overfeeding was induced by reducing the litter size to 3 male pups per mother during the suckling period. The litter size of control rats was adjusted to 10 male pups per mother. Seven weeks after birth overfed and normally fed rats were selected and assigned to a sedentary protocol or to a low-intensity treadmill training protocol (60 min, 5 times/week, for 9 weeks). Four groups (overfed sedentary, N = 23; normally fed sedentary, N = 32; overfed exercised, N = 18, and normally fed exercised, N = 18) were evaluated at 18 weeks. Data are reported as means ± SEM. Initial body weight was similar in control and overfed rats [8.0 ± 0.2 g (N = 42) vs 8.0 ± 0.1 g (N = 50); P > 0.05] and body weight gain during the suckling period was higher in the overfed rats (30.6 ± 0.9 vs 23.1 ± 0.3 g; P < 0.05). Exercise attenuated the body weight gain of overfed compared to sedentary rats (505 ± 14 vs 537 ± 12 g; P < 0.05). The sedentary overfed rats showed higher visceral fat weight compared to normally fed animals (31.22 ± 2.08 vs 21.94 ± 1.76 g; P < 0.05). Exercise reduced visceral fat by 36.5% in normally fed rats and by 35.7% in overfed rats. Exercise attenuated obesity in overfed rats and induced an important reduction of visceral fat.
