ABSTRACT This report describes two cases of male cats affected by FLUTD (Feline lower urinary tract disease). The first patient had been affected by numerous relapses after passing through various therapeutic treatments and surgical interventions, and was subjected to the alternative protocol after being recommended for euthanasia, the second patient had no history of urinary tract disorders in the past, and was not subjected to any kind of previous treatment. The two patients had a significant improvement in their clinical condition, were not affected by relapses after participation in the alternative design, and were accompanied for about a year after their treatment.

O experimento in vitro foi realizado para avaliar a ação do extrato etanólico das folhas do melão-de-São-Caetano (Momordica charantia L.) sobre o desenvolvimento de ovos e motilidade de larvas de nematóides gastrintestinais de caprinos. As larvas foram obtidas de coproculturas e a recuperação de ovos foi feita pela técnica dos quatro tamises, a partir de fezes de caprinos naturalmente infectados da mesorregião do Sertão Paraibano. O extrato foi utilizado nas diluições de 50; 25; 12,5; 6,25 e 3,12% para ambos os testes e como controle positivo e para controle negativo, utilizou-se água destilada estéril. As placas foram examinadas ao microscópio óptico para contagem dos ovos em desenvolvimento e larvas móveis e imóveis, após 24, 48 e 72 horas de incubação. As concentrações do extrato etanólico de M. charantia e os tratamentos controle negativo e positivo diferiram quanto ao número de ovos inviáveis. No teste de motilidade larval as concentrações acima de 12% apresentaram médias significativas quanto ao número de larvas inviáveis. Nas condições ensaiadas a M. charantia apresentou atividade ovicida e larvicida.

The experiment in vitro was performed to evaluate the action of the ethanolic extract of "melão de São Caetano" (Momordica charantia L.) leaves on the development of eggs and motility of larvae of gastrointestinal nematodes from goats. The nematode larvae were obtained from coproculture and the recovery of eggs was done in sieves, from feces of naturally infected goats from the Mesoregion of Paraíba State. The extract was used at the dilutions of 50, 25, 12.5, 6.25 and 3.12% for both tests and as positive control; for negative control, sterile distilled water was used. The plates were examined under optical microscope to count the eggs in development and mobile larvae after 24, 48 and 72 h of incubation. The concentrations of M. charantia ethanolic extract and the negative and positive controls differed as to the number of eggs that were not viable. In the larval motility test, concentrations higher than 12% had significant means as to the number of larvae that were not viable. Under the tested conditions, M. charantia showed larvicidal and ovicidal activity.

Avaliou-se a eficácia da Typha domingensis (taboa) e da Operculina hamiltonii (batata-de-purga) in natura sobre nematóides gastrintestinais de caprinos, naturalmente infectados, em clima semi-árido. Foram utilizados 30 caprinos da raça Moxotó, e o rizoma da taboa e a raiz da batata-de-purga, avaliados através da fitoquímica. As fezes foram coletadas nos dias zero, sete e 25, após, o tratamento da contagem de OPG. Os animais foram distribuídos inteiramente ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos e seis repetições. Grupo I tratado com Moxidectina 0,2% em dose única de 0,5 mg Kg-1; o Grupo II tratado com Taboa na dose (10 g 20 Kg-1 peso vivo); Grupo III com batata-de-purga na dose de 9 g 20 Kg-1 p.v.; Grupo IV tratado com taboa 10 g 20 Kg-1 p.v. associada a batata 9 g 20 Kg-1 p.v. durante três dias consecutivos, todos administrados oralmente e o Grupo V como grupo controle. Os grupos tratados apresentaram redução no número médio de OPG aos 7 e 25 dias pós-tratamento, quando comparado com o grupo controle no respectivo período, sendo a batata-de-purga com maior redução aos 7 e a taboa aos 25 dias. A maior eficácia foi da batata-de-purga de 84% e 70%, nos dias 7 e 25 pós-tratamento. Verificou-se que a batata-de-purga foi eficaz no controle de nematóides gastrintestinais de caprinos no clima semi-árido e que a taboa associada com a batata tem potencial para serem utilizadas em programas alternativos de controle parasitário.

The effectiveness of Typha domingensis ("taboa") and Operculina hamiltonii ("batata-de-purga") in natura was evaluated on gastrointestinal nematodes of goats, naturally infected, in the semi-arid region. Thirty Moxotó goats were used, and the rhizome of "taboa" and the root of "batata-de-purga" were analyzed through phytochemistry. Feces were collected on days zero, seven and 25 after the treatment for FECs. The distribution of animals was completely at random, with five treatments and six replicates. Group I was treated with Moxidectin 0.2% in a single dose of 0.5 mg kg-1; Group II was treated with "taboa" at the dose of 10 g 20 Kg-1 body weight; Group III was treated with "batata-de-purga" at the dose of 9 g 20 Kg-1 b.w.; Group IV was treated with "taboa" at 10 g 20 Kg-1 b.w. associated with "batata-de-purga" at 9 g 20 Kg-1 b.w. during three consecutive days. All treatments were orally administered and Group V was used as control. Treated groups showed a reduction in the average number of FECs at seven and 25 days post-treatment when compared to the control group in the respective period; "batata de purga" had a greater reduction at seven days, while "taboa" showed a more pronounced reduction at 25 days. The highest effectiveness was observed for "batata de purga": 84% and 70% at seven and 25 days post treatment. "Batata-de-purga" was effective in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes of goats in the semi-arid climate and "taboa" associated with "batata de purga" have the potential to be used in alternative programs for parasite control.

Avaliou-se o efeito da restrição na frequência de amamentação sobre o diâmetro folicular no dia 0 (DFOL), sobre a taxa de ovulação (TO), e sobre a incidência de luteólise prematura no primeiro ciclo estral pós-parto (ILP) de vacas Nelore multíparas, em anestro, submetidas à amamentação ad libitum (controle; n= 115) ou amamentação uma vez ao dia (restrito; n= 109), entre os dias -14 e 9 do experimento, e estudou-se o efeito desses tratamentos sobre o peso à desmama da progênie dessas vacas. Induziu-se ovulação com remoção de bezerros entre os dias -2 e 0 e aplicação de 100μg de GnRH no dia 0. Somente animais que ovularam foram mantidos no experimento (n= 125). A ocorrência de luteólise prematura foi avaliada por meio da dosagem da concentração sérica de progesterona nos dias 5 e 9. A TO não foi influenciada pelos tratamentos (55,8%; P>0,1), e as vacas do tratamento restrito apresentaram maior DFOL (10,90±0,26 vs. 10,18±0,21mm; P<0,05) e menor ILP (21,4% vs. 43,5%; P<0,05). Os bezerros do tratamento controle foram mais pesados (162,32±2,08 vs. 155,91±4,12kg; P<0,05). Conclui-se que a restrição na frequência de amamentação em vacas Nelore reduz a ILP, porém com possível efeito negativo no desenvolvimento dos bezerros.

The effects of restricted suckling on follicular diameter at day 0 (FDDO), ovulation rate (OR), and incidence of premature luteolysis in the first post partum estrous cycle (PLI) of Nelore cows and the effects on weight at weaning (WW) of progenie of these cows were evaluated. Multiparous anestrous postpartum Nelore cows were submitted to ad libitum suckling (control; n= 115) or once-a-day suckling (restricted; n= 109) from days -14 to 9 of the experiment. For both treatments, a temporary calf removal was performed from days -2 to 0, and on day 0 cows received 100μg of GnRH. Only animals that ovulated after GnRH treatment were used in the experiment (n= 125). The occurrence of premature luteolysis was evaluated by dosage of serum progesterone concentrations on days 5th and 9th. The OR was not affected by treatments (55.8%; P>0.1), but cows from restricted treatment had larger FDDO at time of GnRH treatment (10.90±0.26 vs. 10.18±0.21mm; P<0.05) and lower PLI (21.4% vs. 43.5%; P<0.05) than cows from control treatment. Calves from control treatment had higher WW than calves from restricted treatment (162.32±2.08 vs. 155.91±4.12kg; P<0.05). These results indicate that the restriction in frequency of suckling in Nelore cows may decrease the incidence of premature luteolysis in the first postpartum estrous cycle; however, with possible negative effects on calves development.

RESUMO Os bubalinos apresentam doenças semelhantes às de bovinos, como a mastite, causando grandes prejuízos pecuaristas, no que se refere a terapêutica. O uso indevido de antibióticos aumenta a resistência, o que torna cada vez mais difícil o tratamento da mastite, devido a necessidade de descobrir novos compostos que sejam eficazes. Este trabalho visa avaliar alternativa de tratamento da mastite com plantas do Semi-árido paraibano Jurema preta [ Mimosa tenuiflora (Wild) Poiret] e Neem (Azadiracta indica). As folhas de Neem foram coletadas em árvores de fazendas do Município de Patos, PB, e casca de Jurema preta foi da fazenda da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, UFCG, Campus de Patos, em seguida, preparado o extrato etanólico. As amostras de Staphylococcus sp. foram coletadas de leite de búfalas com mastite subclínica e semeadas em placas de Petri contendo ágar-base acrescido de 8% de sangue desfibrinado de ovino. As placas foram incubadas em estufa bacteriológica a 37º C e a leitura foi realizada com 24 e 48h. Os ensaios foram realizados em duplicata e o resultado final foi determinado pela média aritmética dos halos de inibição. O extrato etanólico de Jurema preta foi eficaz quando comparado ao de Neem, sobre Staphylococcus coagulase negativa isolados de casos de mastite subclínica em búfalas.

ABSTRACT Buffaloes ranching presents illnesses similar to those of cattle, such as mastitis, causing losses for the producers, in regard to therapeutics. The improper antibiotic use of antibiotics increases the bacteria’s resistance, making it increasingly more difficult to treat mastitis, owing to the need to discover new effective compounds. The present study was aimed to evaluate the alternative control of mastitis with plants of the semi-arid region of Paraiba State, Brazil: jurema preta [Mimosa tenuiflora (Wild) Poiret] and neem (Azadiracta indica). The leaves of neem were collected on farms in the county of Patos, and the bark of jurema preta was collected from the farm of the Federal University of Campina Grande UFCG, Campus of Patos, with subsequent preparation of the ethanolic extract. The samples of Staphylococcus sp. were collected from milk of buffaloes with subclinical mastitis and sown in Petri plates containing agar-base complemented by 8% of defibrinated sheep blood. The plates were incubatedin a bacteriological chamber at 37º C, and the reading was carried out at 24 and 48 hs. The assays were carried out in duplicate, and the final result was determined by the arithmetic mean of halo inhibition. The ethanolic extract of jurema preta was efficient when compared with that of neem, on coagulasenegative Staphylococcus isolated from cases of subclinical mastitis in buffaloes.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo da ação do etileno no amadurecimento de frutos de manga, tentando contribuir para o conhecimento da fisiologia do amadurecimento destes frutos. Foram utilizadas mangas (Mangifera indica L.), variedade Keitt, colhidas em estágio pré-climatérico. Estes frutos receberam tratamento com ethrel (500 e 1.000 ppm, com exceção da testemunha) e foram submetidos às seguintes determinações: pH, acidez, índice refratométrico e açúcares totais. A análise e interpretação dos resultados mostrou a inexistência de diferença estatística entre esses 3 tratamentos, indicando que a aplicação de ethrel não trouxe nenhuma vantagem na melhoria de qualidade dos frutos.

Ethylene action on mango fruits was studied in relation to the ripening physiology of these fruits. Mango (Mangifera indica L.), Keitt variety, were harvested in the pre-climateric stage. These fruits, after receiving Ethrel treatment (500 e 1,000 ppni, except for control), were analized for pH, acidity, refratometric index and total sugars. The analysis and interpretation of the results showed no statistical differences among treatments, showing that ethrel didn't improve the fruits quality.
