Impulsivity influences food intake in women with generalized anxiety disorder

Objective: Eating behavior is affected by psychological and neurocognitive factors. However, little is known about this relationship in anxious patients. Our aim was to investigate the associations between impulsivity, inhibitory control, energy-dense food consumption, and body mass index (BMI) in women with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 51 adult females with GAD answered the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) and participated in a go/no-go task using food images. Anthropometric measurements were evaluated. A food frequency questionnaire and a snack test were used to study eating behavior. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression were performed to analyze the variables of interest, adjusted by age. Results: Impulsivity predicted intake of sugar (p = 0.016, 95%CI 0.67-6.05), total fat (p = 0.007, 95%CI 0.62-3.71), and saturated fat (p = 0.004, 95%CI 0.30-1.48). The snack test showed a positive correlation between presence of impulsivity and intake of biscuits (R = 0.296; p = 0.051). Response inhibition to food images in the go/no-go task paradigm did not predict BMI or food intake. Conclusion: Impulsivity was predictive of higher sugar and saturated fat intake in women diagnosed with GAD. Our findings add to the literature regarding the association between neuropsychological factors and food consumption in this specific population.

First records of molluscs naturally infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis (Nematoda: Metastrongyloidea) in Sergipe State, Northeastern Brazil, including new global records of natural intermediate hosts

ABSTRACT Human neural angiostrongyliasis is an emerging infectious disease caused by nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The present study investigated the presence of Angiostrongylus spp. in terrestrial molluscs collected from the following areas in the Metropolitan Region of Aracaju, Sergipe State, Brazil: Barra dos Coqueiros, Nossa Senhora do Socorro, Sao Cristovao and Aracaju. In total, 703 specimens representing 13 mollusc species were screened for Angiostrongylus spp. Larvae of Angiostrongylus spp. were found in three species. Larvae recovered from Achatina fulica were used for experimental infection in Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus). For specific identification of nematodes, the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) was sequenced from both larvae and adults recovered from molluscs and rats, respectively. Infection with A. cantonensis was detected in all municipalities and in the following three host species: Bulimulus tenuissimus, Cyclodontina fasciata (Barra dos Coqueiros), and A. fulica (Aracaju, Nossa Senhora do Socorro and Sao Cristovao). Co-infections were also found with Caenorhabditis sp. and Strongyluris sp. larvae. This is the first study of the helminth fauna associated with the terrestrial malacofauna in Sergipe State, and confirms that these three snail species are involved in the transmission of A. cantonensis in the state. In addition, B. tenuissimus and C. fasciata are newly reported natural hosts of the parasite.

Potencial antagonista e controle in vitro de Alternaria solani por fungos sapróbios

RESUMO Alternaria solani, agente etiológico da pinta preta, é considerado um fitopatógeno de grande impacto econômico na cultura do tomate, gerando grandes prejuízos aos agricultores. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o potencial antagonista por confronto direto, produção de voláteis e atividade antimicrobiana in vitro de filtrado de fungos sapróbios contra A. solani. Assim, confrontou-se o fitopatógeno A. solani com os fungos sapróbios Volutella minima, Memnoniella echinata, M. levispora, Curvularia eragrostidis, C. inaequalis, Gonytrichum chlamydosporium, G. macrocladum, Pseudobotrytis terrestris, Pithomyces chartarum, Lappodochium lageniforme, Dictyochaeta simplex, Stachybotrys nephrosfora e S. globosa, observando a formação de halo de inibição e agressividade dos fungos por meio de uma escala de nota. Foi avaliado também o crescimento do fitopatógeno na concentração 20% para selecionar filtrado de sapróbios com atividade antimicrobiana. Posteriormente os filtrados dos sapróbios selecionados foram estudados nas concentrações 5; 10; 15 e 20%, avaliando o crescimento micelial de A. solani. Os sapróbios L. lageniforme e G. macrocladum, apresentaram maior crescimento micelial em relação a A. solani sete dias após a repicagem do fitopatógeno. Aos 15 dias somente o L. lageniforme conteve o patógeno. No teste de confrontação direta os fungos L. lageniforme e G. macrocladum ocuparam uma maior área na placa de Petri que o patógeno. Os filtrados dos fungos G. macrocladum, C. inaequalis, P. terrestris, S. globosa e C. eragrostidis na concentração de 20% promoveram redução no crescimento micelial de A. solani de 34, 21, 19, 10 e 10%, respectivamente. Ao analisar o efeito das concentrações dos filtrados no crescimento micelial de A. solani, observou dose-dependência em todos os tratamentos, com máxima inibição do crescimento para os filtrados de G. macrocladum, C. inaequalis, P. terrestris, S. globosa e C. eragrostidis, respectivamente, na concentração 20%.
ABSTRACT Alternaria solani, the etiological agent of early blight, is considered a phytopathogen of great economic impact on tomato crop, causing great losses to farmers. The aim of this study was to assess the antagonistic potential for direct confrontation, the production of volatile compounds and the in vitro antimicrobial activity of saprobic fungal filtrate against A. solani. Thus, the phytopathogen A. solani was confronted with the saprobic fungi Volutella minima, Memnoniella echinata, M. levispora, Curvularia eragrostidis, C. inaequalis, Gonytrichum chlamydosporium, G. macrocladum, Pseudobotrytis terrestris, Pithomyces chartarum, Lappodochium lageniforme, Dictyochaeta simplex, Stachybotrys nephrosfora and S. globosa, to observe inhibition zone formation and aggressiveness of the fungi according to a score scale. The phytopathogen growth was also evaluated at the concentration of 20% to select the saprobe filtrate with antimicrobial activity. Subsequently, the selected saprobe filtrates were studied at the concentrations of 5; 10; 15 and 20%, evaluating the mycelial growth of A. solani. The saprobes L. lageniforme and G. macrocladum showed greater mycelial growth, compared to A. solani, at seven days after transferring the phytopathogen. At 15 days, only L. lageniforme contained the pathogen. In the direct confrontation test, the fungi L. lageniforme and G. macrocladum occupied a larger area on the Petri dish, in contrast to the pathogen. The fungal filtrates G. macrocladum, C. inaequalis, P. terretris, S. globosa and C. eragrostidis, at a concentration of 20%, promoted a reduction in the mycelial growth of A. solani by 34, 21, 19, 10 and 10%, respectively. Analyzing the effect of the filtrate concentrations on the mycelial growth of A. solani, dose-dependence was observed in all treatments, with maximum growth inhibition for filtrates of G. macrocladum, C. inaequalis, P. terretris, S. globosa and C. eragrostidis, respectively, at the concentration of 20%.

Qualidade de frutos de tomateiro cultivado em sistema de produção orgânico e tratados com subprodutos de capim limão

RESUMO Considerando a necessidade de alternativas que sejam eficientes e mais sustentáveis no tratamento pós-colheita, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar a interferência de subprodutos de Cymbopogon citratus aplicados à campo, em sistema orgânico de produção, na qualidade pós-colheita de tomate tipo italiano, comparando-os a frutos obtidos de sistema convencional. Os tratamentos aplicados na pré-colheita foram: Extrato aquoso bruto de C. citratus a 1%, 5%, 10% e 15%, Óleo essencial de C. citratus a 10 µL L-1, 100 µL L-1, 200 µL L-1 e 400 µL L-1, Citral a 10 µL L-1, 100 µL L-1, 200 µL L-1 e 400 µL L-1, testemunha com aplicação de água, Calda Bordalesa 1%, Crop-set - Improcop® e tomate cultivado em sistema convencional. Foram realizadas análises físicas (coloração, perda de massa parcial e total, volume, viabilidade e peso específico), químicas (pH, SST, AT e ratio) e sensoriais (firmeza ao toque, aparência geral externa, característica da polpa, aparência geral interna, aroma, textura, sabor, sabor estranho, doçura, acidez e qualidade global). Diferenças significativas foram verificadas na comparação entre os dois sistemas de cultivo, de modo que os frutos orgânicos apresentaram tendência em demorar mais para amadurecer, menor acidez, maior SST na avaliação final e maior ratio. Na análise sensorial receberam as melhores notas para os parâmetros acidez, textura, doçura e qualidade global.
ABSTRACT Considering the need for alternatives that are efficient and more sustainable during post-harvest treatment, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of by-products of Cymbopogon citratus applied in the field under a system of organic production, on the postharvest quality of the Italian tomato, comparing them to fruits obtained under a conventional system. The treatments applied pre-harvest were: crude aqueous extract of C. citratus at 1%, 5%, 10% and 15%; essential oil of C. citratus at 10 µL L-1, 100 µL L-1, 200 µL L-1 and 400 µL L-1; Citral at 10 uL L-1, 100 mL L-1, 200 uL L-1 and 400 uL L-1; control with an application of water; 1% Bordeaux mixture; Crop-Set - Improcop®; and tomato grown under a conventional system. The following analyses were carried out: physical (colouration, partial and total weight loss, volume, viability and specific weight), chemical (pH, TSS, TA and ratio) and sensory (firmness to touch, general external appearance, pulp characteristics, general internal appearance, aroma, texture, flavour, off flavour, sweetness, acidity and overall quality). Significant differences were found in comparisons between the two systems, where the organic fruit tended to take longer to mature, had lower acidity, higher TSS in the final evaluation, and a higher ratio. In the sensory analysis, these received the best grading for the parameters of acidity, texture, sweetness and overall quality.

Resumo Um levantamento atualizado das plantas com sementes e análises relevantes acerca desta biodiversidade são apresentados. Este trabalho se iniciou em 2010 com a publicação do Catálogo de Plantas e Fungos e, desde então vem sendo atualizado por mais de 430 especialistas trabalhando online. O Brasil abriga atualmente 32.086 espécies nativas de Angiospermas e 23 espécies nativas de Gimnospermas e estes novos dados mostram um aumento de 3% da riqueza em relação a 2010. A Amazônia é o Domínio Fitogeográfico com o maior número de espécies de Gimnospermas, enquanto que a Floresta Atlântica possui a maior riqueza de Angiospermas. Houve um crescimento considerável no número de espécies e nas taxas de endemismo para a maioria dos Domínios (Caatinga, Cerrado, Floresta Atlântica, Pampa e Pantanal), com exceção da Amazônia que apresentou uma diminuição de 2,5% de endemicidade. Entretanto, a maior parte das plantas com sementes que ocorrem no Brasil (57,4%) é endêmica deste território. A proporção de formas de vida varia de acordo com os diferentes Domínios: árvores são mais expressivas na Amazônia e Floresta Atlântica do que nos outros biomas, ervas são dominantes no Pampa e as lianas apresentam riqueza expressiva na Amazônia, Floresta Atlântica e Pantanal. Este trabalho não só quantifica a biodiversidade brasileira, mas também indica as lacunas de conhecimento e o desafio a ser enfrentado para a conservação desta flora.
Abstract An updated inventory of Brazilian seed plants is presented and offers important insights into the country's biodiversity. This work started in 2010, with the publication of the Plants and Fungi Catalogue, and has been updated since by more than 430 specialists working online. Brazil is home to 32,086 native Angiosperms and 23 native Gymnosperms, showing an increase of 3% in its species richness in relation to 2010. The Amazon Rainforest is the richest Brazilian biome for Gymnosperms, while the Atlantic Rainforest is the richest one for Angiosperms. There was a considerable increment in the number of species and endemism rates for biomes, except for the Amazon that showed a decrease of 2.5% of recorded endemics. However, well over half of Brazillian seed plant species (57.4%) is endemic to this territory. The proportion of life-forms varies among different biomes: trees are more expressive in the Amazon and Atlantic Rainforest biomes while herbs predominate in the Pampa, and lianas are more expressive in the Amazon, Atlantic Rainforest, and Pantanal. This compilation serves not only to quantify Brazilian biodiversity, but also to highlight areas where there information is lacking and to provide a framework for the challenge faced in conserving Brazil's unique and diverse flora.
