RESUMO No Brasil, existem poucos estudos sobre a epidemiologia da brusone do trigo, consequentemente, pouca informação tem sido gerada sobre o progresso da doença. Este estudo avaliou o progresso temporal da brusone do trigo em quatro genótipos, submetidos ao controle químico e a diferentes quantidades de inóculo primário de Pyricularia textomediograminis-triticitextomedio no campo. Os genótipos BRS 264, VI 98053, CD 116 e CD 104 foram inoculados com cinco volumes da suspensão fúngica (concentração de 1,5 x 105 esporos mL-1), de modo a obter, respectivamente, cinco porcentagens (0, 5, 10, 20 e 30 %) de plantas inoculadas na unidade experimental. A intensidade da brusone foi quantificada pela incidência e pela severidade da brusone em espigas e em folhas bandeira. As avaliações foram realizadas aos 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 dias após a inoculação (DAI). As equações de regressão foram significativas e ajustadas ao modelo logístico. A aplicação de fungicida (piraclostrobina + epoxiconazol) retardou a manifestação dos sintomas da brusone nos genótipos e, quando combinado com a cultivar moderadamente resistente (CD 116), teve melhor eficiência na redução da doença. As cultivares BRS 264 e CD 104 apresentam maior incidência e severidade em espigas no tempo. Em geral, os genótipos apresentam baixa severidade da brusone em folhas bandeira (<0,45 %) e com um baixo progresso temporal, nas diferentes quantidades de inóculo de P. textomediograminis-triticitextomedio. Na região de Viçosa-MG, nas condições de inóculo artificial estudadas, a cultivar CD 116 se confirma como moderadamente resistente à brusone e os genótipos BRS 264, VI 98053 e CD 104 como suscetíveis.

ABSTRACT In Brazil, there are few studies on the epidemiology of wheat blast; consequently, little information has been generated about the disease progress. This study evaluated the temporal progression of wheat blast in four genotypes subjected to chemical control and to different amounts of primary inoculum of Pyricularia graminis-tritici in the field. The genotypes BRS 264, VI 98053, CD 116 and CD 104 were inoculated with five volumes of fungal suspension (concentration of 1.5 x 105 spores.mL-1), in order to obtain, respectively, five percentages (0, 5, 10 , 20 and 30%) of plants inoculated in the experimental unit. The intensity of blast was quantified based on the incidence and the severity of this disease in spikes and flag leaves. Evaluations were performed at 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 days after inoculation (DAI). The obtained regression equations were significant and adjusted to the logistic model. Application of the fungicide (pyraclostrobin plus epoxiconazole) delayed the onset of blast symptoms in the genotypes and, when combined with the moderately resistant cultivar (CD 116), had better efficiency in reducing the disease. The cultivars BRS 264 and CD 104 presented higher incidence and severity in the spikes according to time. In general, the genotypes present low severity of blast in flag leaves (<0.45 %) and a low temporal progression in the different amounts of inoculum of P. graminis-tritici. In the region of Viçosa-MG, Brazil, under the studied conditions of artificial inoculum, the cultivar CD 116 is confirmed as moderately resistant to blast and the genotypes BRS 264, VI 98053 and CD 104 are susceptible.

Resumo: Estudos da transmissão de Pyricularia graminis-tritici pela semente de trigo podem auxiliar no estabelecimento de padrões de tolerância do patógeno na cultura. Quatro genótipos diferentes quanto à reação à brusone foram inoculados com cinco volumes da suspensão fúngica (1,5x105 esporos.mL-1), de modo a obter 0, 5, 10, 20 e 30% de plantas inoculadas na unidade experimental. O potencial de transmissão de P. graminis-tritici planta-semente foi avaliado pela incidência do fungo nas sementes produzidas. Em condições controladas, avaliou-se a taxa de transmissão do fungo da semente à plântula. A incidência da brusone no campo possibilitou elevada incidência de P. graminis-tritici nas sementes, principalmente nos genótipos considerados suscetíveis. Ocorreu transmissão do fungo da semente para plântula aos 7, 14 e 21 dias após a semeadura e as taxas foram baixas. Existe relação entre a presença da brusone no campo e a incidência de P. graminis-tritici nas sementes produzidas pelos genótipos BRS 264, VI 98053, CD 116 e CD 104. A inoculação de 5, 10, 20 e 30% de plantas com o fungo pode gerar alta incidência do patógeno no campo e nas sementes produzidas, mas não garante elevada taxa de transmissão da semente para a plântula, que é baixa em condições controladas.

Abstract: Transmission studies of Pyricularia graminis-tritici by wheat seed can help establishing pathogen tolerance standards in crops. Four genotypes, each one with different responses to blast, were inoculated with five volumes of fungal suspension (1,5x105 spores.mL-1), in order to obtain 0, 5, 10, 20 and 30% of plants inoculated in the experimental unit. The potential of transmission of P. graminis-tritici from plant to seed was evaluated by the incidence of the fungus in the seeds produced. Under controlled conditions, the transmission rate of the fungus from seed to seedling was evaluated. Blast incidence in field allowed a high incidence of P. graminis-tritici in the seeds, especially in the genotypes considered susceptible. The transmission of fungus from the seeds to seedlings occurred 7, 14 and 21 days after sowing, at low rates. There was a relationship between the presence of blast in field and the incidence of P. graminis-tritici in seeds produced by the genotypes BRS 264, VI 98053, CD 116 and CD 104. Inoculation of 5, 10, 20 and 30% of plants with fungus can generate a high incidence of the pathogen in field and in the seeds produced, but it doesn`t guarantee a high transmission rate from seed to seedling, which is low under controlled conditions.

Resumo: Informações sobre danos causados pela brusone (Pyricularia oryzae) na produtividade de sementes de trigo ainda são escassas, sobretudo estudos sobre o efeito desta na germinação e no vigor. Objetivou-se avaliar os danos da brusone na produtividade e na qualidade de sementes de trigo em função do inóculo inicial no campo. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em fatorial 4x5: inoculações em quatro genótipos de trigo (BRS 264, CD 116, CD 104 e VI 98053) com cinco doses de inóculo inicial de P. oryzae (0, 5, 10, 20 e 30% de plantas inoculadas). A inoculação ocorreu na fase de espigas completamente emergidas. Foram realizadas as seguintes determinações: incidência de brusone nas plantas, massa da matéria seca de 100 plantas, massa de sementes de 100 plantas, produtividade, germinação, primeira contagem, IVG, massa seca de plântulas, peso hectolítrico e incidência de P. oryzae nas sementes. Há redução da produtividade e da qualidade fisiológica das sementes dos genótipos em função do inóculo inicial no campo. Ocorre a transmissão de P. oryzae da planta-mãe para sementes de trigo. Nesses genótipos, recomenda-se não utilizar como sementes, aquelas provenientes de campos de produção com incidência de brusone a partir de 20% nas plantas, próximo à maturação das sementes.

Abstract: Information on damages caused by blast (Pyricularia oryzae) on wheat seed productivity is still scarce, especially studies on the effect of this on germination and vigor. This study aimed at evaluating blast damages on the productivity and quality of wheat seeds as a function of the initial inoculum in the field. Treatments were arranged in factorial 4x5: inoculations in four wheat genotypes (BRS 264, CD 116, CD 104 and VI 98053) with five doses of initial inoculum of P. oryzae (0, 5, 10, 20 and 30% of inoculated plants). The inoculation occurred in the stage of completely emerged spikes. The following determinations were made: incidence of blast in plants, dry matter mass of 100 plants, seed mass of 100 plants, productivity, germination, first count, germination speed index, dry mass of seedlings, hectolitric weight and incidence of P. oryzae in the seeds. There is a reduction in the productivity and physiological quality of the seeds of the genotypes due to the initial inoculum in the field. The transmission of P. oryzae occurs from the mother plant to the wheat seeds. In these genotypes, it is recommended not to use as seeds the ones coming from fields with blast incidence from 20% on in the plants, close to seed maturation.

O NBPT (N-(n-butil) tiofosfórico triamida) é uma substância inibidora da urease, que se vem apresentando como das mais promissoras para a maximização do uso do nitrogênio da ureia em sistemas agrícolas. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o desempenho produtivo do trigo irrigado, submetido à fertilização com ureia ou ureia+NBPT aplicadas em dose única ou parcelada. O experimento foi conduzido, de junho a outubro de 2006, em Viçosa-MG, Brasil. Seguiu-se o esquema fatorial 2×2, em que a ureia ou ureia+NBPT foram combinadas com duas formas de aplicação: dose total na semeadura (60kg ha-1) ou parcelada (20kg ha-1 na semeadura + 40kg ha-1, em cobertura, no perfilhamento). O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso com dez repetições. Conclui-se que o parcelamento da fertilização nitrogenada não promove incremento de produtividade do trigo, sob as condições de cultivo empregadas; o uso de inibidor de urease aumenta a produtividade da cultura do trigo, quando a ureia é aplicada, em cobertura, durante o perfilhamento, mas, seu uso não promove aumento da produtividade quando a ureia é aplicada no sulco, durante a semeadura.

NBPT (N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide), a urease inhibitor, has been reported as one of the most promising compounds to maximize urea nitrogen use in agricultural systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of irrigated wheat fertilized with urea or urea + NBPT as single or split application. The experiment was conducted from June to October 2006 in Viçosa, MG, Brazil. The experimental design followed a 2×2 factorial scheme, in which urea or urea + NBPT were combined with two modes of application: full dose at sowing (60kg ha-1) or split (20kg ha-1 at sowing + 40kg ha-1 as topdressing at tillering), in randomized blocks with ten replications. The split application of nitrogen fertilization does not improve the yield wheat under used conditions. The use of urease inhibitor improves the grain yield of wheat crop when urea is applied in topdressing at tillering, but its use does not promote difference when urea is applied in the furrow at planting.

The urease inhibitor NBPT(N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide) is a management alternative to increase urea efficiency in topdressing because it reduces NH3 volatilization. The objective of this study was to evaluate N recovery and yield performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) ’BRS 254’ fertilized with different urea or urea + NBPT rates in topdressing. The experiment was conducted from May to September 2007 in Vicosa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Treatments followed a 5 x 2 + 1 factorial design consisting of five N fertilizer rates (30, 60, 90, 120, and 150 kg ha-1) as urea or urea + NBPT (Agrotain®) applied as topdressing and a control without N. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Adding NBPT to urea resulted in better N utilization by wheat plants. The 100 kg N ha-1 topdressing rate provided the best apparent N recovery by wheat plants, whereas 90 kg ha-1 provided the best N use efficiency.

O objetivo neste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos de doses de nitrogênio associadas às doses do redutor de crescimento trinexapac-etil na cultura do trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa-MG, seguiu um esquema fatorial 5×4, no delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram 30, 60, 90, 120 e 150kg ha-1 de N, combinados com 0, 62,5, 125 e 187,5g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil. Trinexapac-etil promove redução da massa seca da parte aérea e do rendimento de grãos nas menores doses de N, mas sob doses elevadas de N o trinexapac-etil promove aumento dessas características. A combinação entre doses de N e trinexapac-etil que promove maior massa seca da parte aérea é de 150kg ha-1 e 187g ha-1, mas a que promove maior produção de grãos é de 100kg ha-1 e 120g ha-1, respectivamente.

The objective in this study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen rates in association with rates of the growth retardant trinexapac-ethyl on wheat. The experiment was conducted in Viçosa, MG and arranged in a 5×4 factorial, randomized block design, with four repetitions. A combination of five nitrogen rates (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150kg ha-1) with four rates of trinexapac-ethyl (0, 62.5, 125 and 187.5g ha-1) were tested. Trinexapac-ethyl promotes reduction of soot dry mass and grain yield at the lowest N rates, but at the highest N rates there is increase in these characteristics. The combination between N and trinexapac-ethyl rates that promotes higher shoot dry mass is 150kg ha-1 and 187g ha-1 but that promotes higher grain yield is 100kg ha-1 and 120g ha-1, respectively.

A expansão da triticultura para áreas com temperaturas mais elevadas, como o Brasil-Central, constitui-se uma das principais medidas para diminuir a importação de trigo. Assim, genótipos tolerantes ao calor serão de extrema importância para elevar a produtividade desta cultura. Objetivou-se com este trabalho detectar variabilidade genética para tolerância ao calor, identificar populações e genitores mais tolerantes e quantificar o efeito de altas temperaturas sobre estes genótipos de trigo. Foram realizados dois experimentos em Viçosa (MG), utilizando-se o delineamento látice quadrado 16x16 com duas repetições, composto por 240 famílias oriundas de oito populações segregantes mais 16 genitores. No primeiro experimento, semeado em fevereiro de 2007 (verão), foram avaliadas famílias F2:4 e no segundo, em junho de 2007 (inverno), famílias F2:5. Avaliaram-se os caracteres floração, altura de planta, produção de grãos e massa de mil grãos. Diferenças de temperatura da emergência ao florescimento foram determinantes na resposta dos genótipos entre os ambientes. Detectou-se variabilidade genética para tolerância ao calor entre genitores e populações segregantes de trigo. Todos os caracteres avaliados tiveram redução sob altas temperaturas, sendo a produção de grãos o caráter mais afetado, seguido da altura, floração e massa de mil grãos. Os genótipos mais tolerantes ao calor foram os genitores BR 24, Aliança e EP 93541 e as populações segregantes BH1146/BR24// Aliança/EP93541, BR24/Aliança//EP93541/CPAC9662 e Aliança/EP93541// CPAC9662/Pioneiro.

The expansion of wheat crops to areas with higher temperatures, like the Central-Brazil, is one of the main actions to decrease the wheat importation. For this reason, heat tolerant genotypes are essentials. The objective of this study was to identify genetic variability for heat tolerance, to identify heat tolerant wheat populations and genitors, and to quantify the high temperature effects on those wheat genotypes. Two experiments were carried out in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State. A 16x16 square lattice design was used with two replications, where 240 families from eight segregating populations (30 families from each population) plus 16 genitors were evaluated. In the first experiment sowed in February 2007 (summer), F2:4 families were evaluated. In the second one sowed in June 2007 (winter), F2:5 families were evaluated. The flowering, plant height, grain yield, and thousand grain weight were evaluated. Different temperature conditions from emergence to flowering were crucial on genotype responses when compared the two environments. There was found genetic variability for heat tolerance between wheat genitors and segregating populations. All the evaluated traits presented reduction under high temperatures, being the grain yield the most affected, followed by plant height, flowering, and thousand grain weight. The genitors BR 24, Aliança, and EP 93541 and the populations BH1146/BR24//Aliança/EP93541, BR24/Aliança//EP93541/CPAC9662 and Aliança/EP93541//CPAC9662/Pioneiro were the most heat resistant.

Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito de doses e formas de aplicação de nitrogênio sobre o desempenho e produção de duas cultivares de trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa-MG, de maio a setembro de 2005, foi instalado segundo um esquema fatorial 2x2x5 no delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos avaliados consistiram da combinação das cultivares de trigo, BRS 210 e Pioneiro, duas formas de aplicação de adubo nitrogenado (dose total aplicada por ocasião da semeadura ou 20 kg ha-1 na semeadura e o restante em cobertura no início da fase de perfilhamento) e cinco doses de nitrogênio (40, 60, 80, 100 e 120 kg ha-1) tendo como fonte o sulfato de amônio. A cultivar Pioneiro apresentou maior potencial produtivo que a cultivar BRS 210, mas foi menos resistente ao acamamento. O parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada proporcionou maior acamamento e não trouxe benefícios à produtividade dos grãos. As doses de N promoveram resposta quadrática da produtividade dos grãos, com ponto de máxima estimado na dose de 96,8 kg ha-1 e, aumento linear do acamamento de plantas da cultivar Pioneiro.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of doses and methods of nitrogen application on the development and yield of two wheat cultivars. The experiment was conducted in Viçosa-MG, from May to September 2005, and it was arranged in a 2x2x5 factorial, randomized block design with four repetitions. The treatments consisted of the combination of the two wheat cultivars, BRS 210 and Pioneiro, two nitrogen application methods (total dose applied at seed sowing or 20 kg ha-1 at sowing and the remaining as topdressing in the beginning of tillage) and five N doses (40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 kg ha-1) with ammonium sulfate as N source. Cultivar Pioneiro showed higher yield potential than cultivar BRS 210, but it was less resistance to lodging. Splitting nitrogen fertilization increased lodging and brought no benefit to grain yield. Grain yield response to N doses was quadratic, reaching maximum at 96.8 kg ha-1, and linear increase in lodging of cultivar Pioneiro plants.

A composição mineral de grãos é importante para a definição da qualidade nutricional do alimento e qualidade fisiológica das sementes, devendo ser considerada no estabelecimento dos níveis adequados de adubação. Neste contexto, objetivou-se, com este estudo, avaliar o efeito de doses de sulfato de amônio (SA) e de trinexapac-etil, na composição mineral de grãos de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Pioneiro. O experimento foi desenvolvido em Viçosa (MG), no período de junho a outubro de 2006. Os tratamentos foram cinco doses de SA (150 kg ha-1, 300 kg ha-1, 450 kg ha-1, 600 kg ha-1 e 750 kg ha-1), combinadas com quatro doses de trinexapac-etil (0 g ha-1; 62,5 g ha-1; 125 g ha-1; e 187,5 g ha-1). O experimento foi instalado em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. As doses de SA aumentaram as concentrações de N-total (proteína), Ca, S, Cu e Zn e diminuíram as concentrações de P, K e Mn (acima de 457 kg ha-1de SA). Os teores de Mg e Fe não foram influenciados pelas doses de SA. O trinexapacetil promoveu aumento de N-total, P e Mn e redução de Ca. Os teores de K, S, Cu, Zn, Mg e Fe não foram influenciados pelo redutor. Concluiu-se que a aplicação de SA melhora a qualidade nutricional de grãos, enquanto a utilização do redutor de crescimento trinexapac-etil não influencia na composição mineral dos mesmos.

Grain mineral composition is important for the establishment of appropriate fertilizer levels, as well as to define the nutritional quality of food and physiological quality of seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of ammonium sulfate (AS) and trinexapac-ethyl rates on mineral composition of wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Pioneiro. The experiment was carried out in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from June to October 2006. The treatments consisted of five AS rates (150 kg ha-1, 300 kg ha-1, 450 kg ha-1, 600 kg ha-1, and 750 kg ha-1) combined with four trinexapac-ethyl rates (0 g ha-1, 62.5 g ha-1, 125 g ha-1, and 187.5 g ha-1). The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. AS rates increased the concentrations of total-N (protein), Ca, S, Cu, and Zn and decreased the concentrations of P, K, and Mn (at AS rates above 457 kg ha-1). The Mg and Fe concentrations were not influenced by AS rates. Trinexapac-ethyl increased total-N, P, and Mn; reduced Ca; and had no influence on the concentrations of K, S, Cu, Zn, Mg, and Fe. It can be concluded that AS application improves the nutritional quality of grains, while the use of the growth retardant trinexapac-ethyl has no influence on its mineral composition.

O acamamento de plantas na cultura do trigo tem sido controlado com o uso de redutores de crescimento. No entanto, há carência de informações sobre o efeito desses produtos na qualidade fisiológica de sementes. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a qualidade fisiológica das sementes de trigo obtidas sob efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de três redutores de crescimento. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa, Minas Gerais, entre maio e setembro de 2005, foi instalado com tratamentos em esquema fatorial e hierárquico com uma testemunha, no delineamento em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram 500, 1000 e 1500g ha-1 de clormequat; 40, 80 e 120g ha-1 de paclobutrazol e 62,5, 125 e 187,5g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil aplicados no estádio 6 ou 8 da escala Feeks e Large, mais uma testemunha sem aplicação de redutor. A aplicação foliar dos redutores de crescimento clormequat, paclobutrazol e trinexapac-etil não afeta a germinação e o vigor das sementes de trigo.

Plant lodging in wheat has been controlled through growth retardants. However, there is lack of information on the effect of these products on the physiological quality of seeds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of wheat seeds obtained under different rates and application times of three growth retardants. The trial was carried out in Viçosa-MG, from May to September 2005, in a factorial and hierarchical scheme, in randomized block design with four replications and a control treatment. The treatments consisted of 500, 1000 and 1500g ha-1 of chlormequat; 40, 80 and 120g ha-1 of paclobutrazol and 62.5, 125 and 187.5g ha-1 of trinexapac-ethyl applied at the 6 or 8 growth stage based on the scale of Feeks and Large, and a control treatment without growth retardant application. Leaf application of growth retardants as chlormequat, paclobutrazol and trinexapac-ethyl did not affect the germination and vigor of wheat seeds.

Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de doses e épocas de aplicação de três reguladores de crescimento na elongação do colmo de plantas de trigo. O experimento, conduzido em Viçosa, Estado de Minas Gerais, de maio a setembro de 2005, foi instalado com tratamentos em esquema fatorial e hierárquico com uma testemunha, no delineamento em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram 500; 1.000 e 1.500 g ha-1 de clormequat; 62,5; 125,0 e 187,5 g ha-1 de trinexapac-etil e 40; 80 e 120 g ha-1 de paclobutrazol, aplicados no estádio 6 ou 8 da escala Feeks e Large, e uma testemunha. O comprimento do colmo com trinexapac-etil foi menor do que com o clormequat, que, por sua vez, foi menor do que com o paclobutrazol. A aplicação de reguladores na época 1 promoveu maior redução dos entrenós basais, enquanto a aplicação na época 2 proporcionou maior influência no pedúnculo. O aumento das doses de clormequat e trinexapac-etil promoveu redução do comprimento do colmo e das partes que o formam. O aumento das doses de paclobutrazol promoveu respostas pouco expressivas no colmo e seus componentes.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of doses and times of application of three growth regulators on wheat stem elongation. The experiments were conducted in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, from May to September 2005, in a factorial and hierarchical randomized block design with four repetitions and a control treatment. Treatments consisted of 500, 1000 and 1500 g ha-1 of chlormequat; 62.5, 125.0 and 187.5 g ha-1 of trinexapac-ethyl and 40, 80 and 120 g ha-1 of paclobutrazol, applied either at the 6 or 8 stage of the Feeks and Large scale, with a control. Stem length with trinexapac-ethyl was smaller than with chlormequat, which was in its turn smaller than with paclobutrazol. Application of growth regulators at stage 1 produced shorter basal internodes, whereas the stage 2 application caused greater reduction in the peduncle. The increase in chlormequat and trinexapac-ethyl doses reduced length of stem and its parts. The increase in paclobutrazol doses had very small effects on wheat growth and its parts.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência dos componentes do rendimento e caracteres da planta, na produção de grãos, em trigo sob desfolha, por meio da decomposição das correlações por meio de análise de trilha. O experimento foi conduzido em Viçosa, MG, em 2004. Os tratamentos constituíram-se de três níveis de desfolha e uma testemunha, com três variedades de trigo - Anahuac, BRS 207 e BR 24 -, com quatro repetições. A desfolha foi realizada com a retirada do limbo da folha bandeira, das segunda e terceira folhas superiores. Avaliaram-se: rendimento de grãos, peso do hectolitro, massa de mil grãos, número de espigas por parcela, número de grãos por espiga, biomassa seca do colmo, biomassa seca da palha da espiga, biomassa seca total, rendimento de grãos por espiga, biomassa seca do colmo individual, biomassa seca da palha da espiga individual e biomassa seca total por planta individual. A redução da biomassa seca do colmo levou a menores perdas de rendimento de grãos, pela remobilização de fotoassimilados com a desfolha. A massa de mil grãos e o número de grãos por espiga foram os principais componentes de rendimento. A seleção direta para esses caracteres é estratégia eficiente para aumentar o rendimento de grãos em trigo sob desfolha.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of yield components and plant characters in grain production, in wheat under defoliation, through correlations decomposition using path analysis. The experiment was accomplished in Viçosa, MG, Brazil, in 2004. The treatments consisted of three levels of defoliation and a control, with three wheat varieties - Anahuac, BRS 207 and BR 24 -, with four replicates. Defoliation was carried out by removing the blade of flag leaves from the second and third top leaves. The following parameters were evaluated: grain yield, hectolitric weight, one thousand-grain weight, number of spikes per plot, number of grain per spike, culm dry biomass, spike-straw dry biomass, total dry biomass, grain yield per spike, total dry biomass of individual culm, straw dry biomass of individual spike and total dry biomass per individual plant. The reduction in culm dry biomass led to lower losses of grain yield because of the higher remobilization of photoassimilates with defoliation. Thousand-grain weight and number of grain per spike were the main yield components. The direct selection for these characters is an efficient strategy to increase grain yield in wheat under defoliation.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar o efeito do estresse térmico sobre a cultura do trigo e avaliar o grau de tolerância de genitores e populações segregantes a esse estresse, de modo a identificar populações promissoras para obtenção de linhagens adaptadas às condições de Brasil Central. Foi utilizado o sistema de dialelo circulante, com oito genitores das cultivares Aliança, Anahuac, BH 1146, BR 24, BRS 207 e Pioneiro e as linhagens CPAC 9662 e EP 93541. Foram avaliadas 30 famílias F2:4, oriundas de cada uma das oito populações segregantes, e os oito genitores. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em campo, em 2004, com semeadura no verão (condição de estresse térmico) e no inverno (condição favorável). Foi utilizado o delineamento em látice com duas repetições. Avaliaram-se os caracteres ciclo até o espigamento, altura de planta, peso médio do grão e produção de grãos. A alta temperatura causou redução em todos os caracteres avaliados e os efeitos do estresse térmico, ocorridos no verão, foram obtidos pela porcentagem dessa redução em comparação ao cultivo de inverno. Houve diferenças entre genótipos nas duas épocas de semeadura. Os materiais mais tolerantes ao calor foram os genitores Anahuac, BH 1146, BR 24 e EP 93541, e as populações segregantes Aliança/EP 93541, EP 93541/CPAC 9662 e BH 1146/BR 24.

The objective of this work was to verify the effect of thermic stress conditions on the wheat culture, to evaluate the tolerance level of parents and segregant populations to these conditions, as well as to identify promising populations in order to obtain lines adapted to the Brazilian Central region. A circulant dialel was used among eight parents, comprising the cultivars Aliança, Anahuac, BH 1146, BR 24, BRS 207 and Pioneiro; and the lines CPAC 9662 and EP 93541. Thirty F2:4 families descending from the eight segregant populations and the eight genitors were evaluated. Experiments were carried out in the field and the sowings were performed in the summer (heat stress condition) and winter (favorable condition) of 2004. The lattice design with two replicates was used. Days to heading, plant height, average grain weight, and grain yield were evaluated. In the summer, high temperature reduced all characters evaluated, and thermic stress effects were determined by that reduction percent in comparison to winter cropping values. Differences among genotypes in both sowing dates were also observed. The most heat-tolerant materials were the parents Anahuac, BH 1146, BR 24 and EP 93541, and the segregant populations Aliança/EP 93541, EP 93541/CPAC 9662, and BH 1146/BR 24.

A cultura da soja [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] ocupa lugar de destaque na economia brasileira, tanto em termos de área plantada, quanto de produção de grãos. A presença de gosto de feijão cru tem sido limitante para o consumo de derivados de soja pelos povos ocidentais. Esse sabor característico é proporcionado pelas enzimas lipoxigenases (Lox1, Lox2 e Lox3). A eliminação dessas enzimas, pela manipulação genética dos alelos que as codificam, é a maneira mais adequada de contornar os problemas associados ao sabor desagradável. Visando elucidar a participação das lipoxigenases, no processo de resistência da soja a patógenos, variedades normais de soja (FT-Cristalina RCH, Doko RC e IAC-12) e suas respectivas linhagens obtidas por retrocruzamentos, sem as três lipoxigenases nas sementes (triplo-nulas - TN) e com as três lipoxigenases (triplo-positivas - TP), foram testadas quanto às suas resistências ao cancro-da-haste (Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis), à cercosporiose (Cercospora sojina Hara) e ao oídio (Microsphaera diffusa Cke. & Pk.). Todos os materiais genéticos foram resistentes ao cancro-da-haste. Com relação à cercosporiose, FT-Cristalina RCH e Doko-RC e suas respectivas linhagens com ou sem lipoxigenases mostraram-se resistentes, enquanto IAC-12 e suas linhagens derivadas mostraram índices de doença mais elevados, sendo que as linhagens IAC-12 TP e TN foram mais suscetíveis, indicando perda de gene de resistência nos retrocruzamentos. Não houve relação entre retirada dos genes que codificam lipoxigenases nas sementes com a resistência à cercosporiose. No caso do oídio, as linhagens TP ou TN apresentaram-se similares ou pouco mais resistentes que seus respectivos progenitores recorrentes, os quais se mostraram suscetíveis na seguinte ordem: IAC-12, menos suscetível, Doko-RC, intermediário e FT-Cristalina RCH, mais suscetível.

The soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop holds a prominent position in the Brazilian economy because of the extension of the planted area and volume of grain production, but the beany flavor has been a limiting factor for soybean derivatives consumption by western population. This flavor is produced mainly by action of lipoxygenase enzymes (Lox1, Lox2 and Lox3), present in some commercial varieties. The genetic elimination of the alleles that codify these enzymes is the most appropriate way to avoid problems associated to this deleterious flavor. To elucidate the effect of seed lipoxygenase elimination on the resistance to plant pathogens, normal varieties of soybean (FT-Cristalina RCH, Doko RC and IAC-12) and their backcross-derived lines, both with the three lipoxygenases present in their seeds (triple-positive, TP) and without the three lipoxygenases (triple-null, TN), were tested for their resistance to stem canker (Diaporthe phaseolorum f.sp. meridionalis), frogeye leaf spot (Cercospora sojina Hara), and powdery mildew (Microsphaera diffusa Cke. & Pk.). All genetic materials studied were resistant to stem canker. FT-Cristalina RCH and Doko-RC and their TP and TN lines were resistant to frogeye leaf spot. IAC-12 and its derived lines not only presented a higher disease index, but also the derived lines, TP and TN, were more susceptible, indicating the loss of genes for disease resistance in the backcrosses. There was no association between the elimination of lipoxygenases from the seeds with the resistance to frogeye leaf spot. In relation to the powdery mildew, TP or TN lines presented similar or higher resistance than their respective recurrent parents whose susceptibility appeared in the following order: IAC-12, less susceptible, Doko-RC, intermediate and FT-Cristalina RCH, more susceptible.
