ABSTRACT In this study, we evaluated how guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) addition in diets with various metabolizable energy (ME) contents affects the performance of broiler chickens. We also estimated the equivalence of GAA in ME. We distributed 1,280 one-day-old broilers in a completely randomized design with eight treatments, eight replicates, and twenty birds per experimental unit. Treatments were based on ME levels (2,775-2,875-2,975 kcal/kg; 2,850-2,950-3,050 kcal/kg; 2,925-3,025-3,125 kcal/kg; or 3,000-3,100-3,200 kcal/kg, from 1 to 7, 8 to 21, and 22 to 42 days of age) and the inclusion of GAA (0 or 600 mg/kg). Supplementation of GAA increased weight gain in broilers at an energy level of 2,908 kcal/kg and improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) at energy levels of 2,908 and 2,983 kcal/kg. There was a linear reduction in feed intake and an improvement in FCR of broilers with increasing levels of energy in diets, with and without GAA addition. Solving the equivalence equation, by applying each of the weighted average energy levels studied. indicates the GAA equivalence of 133, 103, 74, and 44 kcal/kg of diet. In conclusion, GAA supplementation improves broilers’ efficiency of energy use; the average ME equivalence of 600 mg/kg of GAA is 88.5 kcal/kg.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of cooling systems by negative pressure versus directed ducts on the performance of lactating sows and their litter. The experiment was conducted in a tropical climatic region in Brazil. Ninety-four lactating sows during 26.2±1.7 days of lactation were included with their 1,236 piglets. Sows were distributed using a completely randomized block design into two treatments: a negative pressure cooling (NPC) system and a directed duct cooling (DDC) system. We adopted sow parity as blocking criterion. During the experimental period, environmental temperatures inside the farrowing rooms were 22.9±1.5 and 25.4±2.5 °C, respectively, using the NPC and DDC systems. Sow daily feed intake, litter weight at weaning, piglet weight at weaning, litter daily weight gain, piglet daily gain, and daily milk production per sow were greater in the NPC system than in the DDC system. The type of cooling system did not affect piglet weight after standardization, mortality, number of piglets weaned per sow, and estrus return. The use of an NPC system can reduce the effects of higher environmental temperatures better than the DDC system. The NPC system allowed for greater feed intake, piglet and litter weight gain, weight of piglets and litter at weaning, and milk production compared with the DDC system.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os efeitos da restrição temporária de lisina na dieta sobre o desempenho e viabilidade econômica de leitões em fase de creche. Foram utilizados 144 leitões, distribuídos em blocos ao acaso, com dois tratamentos e 12 repetições. Os tratamentos foram controle-lis, nível de lisina recomendado dos 21 aos 32 e 32 aos 42 dias de idade e baixa-lis, 90% do nível de lisina das dietas controle-lis. Dos 42 aos 62 dias, todos os animais receberam dieta controle. De 21 a 32 dias, leitões alimentados com baixa-lis tiveram pior ganho médio diário (GMD), conversão alimentar e peso corporal aos 32 dias (P≤0,05). Dos 32 aos 42 dias, leitões alimentados com baixa-lis apresentaram menor consumo médio de ração diário, GMD e peso aos 42 dias (P≤0,05). Dos 21 aos 62 dias, leitões alimentados com baixa-lis apresentaram GMD e peso corporal final menores (P≤0,05) quando comparados aos alimentados com controle-lis. At 27 and 29 days of age, pigs fed the low-lys diet had a higher (P≤0.05) incidence of diarrhea Aos 27 e 29 dias, leitões alimentados com baixa-lis apresentaram maior (P≤0.05) indicência de diarreia. O menor custo de alimentação e o maior índice de eficiência econômica foram registrados para baixa-lis. No entanto, os suínos alimentados com controle-lis apresentaram rentabilidade 3,9% maior. Como conclusão, a restrição temporária de lisina nas dietas de leitões piora o desempenho e diminui a viabilidade econômica.

ABSTRACT To evaluate the effects of temporary dietary lysine restriction on nursery pigs’ growth performance and its economic viability compared to control diets, 144 piglets (21-d-old) were assigned to randomized blocks, with two treatments and twelve replicates. The treatments were control-lys: lysine level as recommended from 21-32 and 32-42 days and low-lys: 90% of the lysine level of the control-lys diets. From 42 to 62 days, all animals received a control diet. From 21 to 32 days, pigs fed low-lys had worse average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion, and 32-d body weight (BW; P ≤ 0.05). From 32 to 42 days, pigs fed low-lys had lower average daily feed intake, ADG, and 42-d BW (P ≤ 0.05). From 42 to 62 days, pigs had similar performance (P > 0.05). Overall (21 to 62 days), pigs fed the low-lys had lower (P <0.05) ADG and final BW. At 27 and 29 days, pigs fed the low-lys diet had a higher (P≤0.05) incidence of diarrhea. The lowest feed cost and the highest economic efficiency index were recorded for the low-lys treatment. However, pigs fed the control-lys presented a 3.9% higher profitability. In conclusion, a temporary reduction of lysine in the diets of nursery pigs followed by an unrestricted diet in the subsequent period led to worse growth performance and lower economic viability.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to evaluate different periods of chromium yeast (CrY) supplementation on growth performance and quantitative carcass characteristics of growing-finishing pigs. We used eighty barrows (Duroc/Pietran × Large White/Landrace) with an initial body weight of 24.5±2.4 kg. A completely randomized block design was used within four periods of dietary CrY supplementation (control diet: CrY-free, from 25 to 110 kg; Cr25-110 kg: diet with 0.4 mg kg−1 of CrY, from 25 to 110 kg; Cr50-110 kg: diet with 0.4 mg kg−1 of CrY, from 50 to 110 kg; and Cr70-110 kg: diet with 0.4 mg kg−1 of CrY, from 70 to 110 kg), with ten replicates and two animals each. The CrY supplementation did not affect (P>0.05) either the grow performance or the carcass characteristics evaluated. The dietary supplementation of 0.4 mg kg−1 of CrY for growing-finishing pigs (25 to 110 kg) does not alter the performance neither the quantitative carcass characteristics.

RESUMO: Realizou-se este estudo com o objetivo de avaliar a associação de cromo-levedura e selênio-levedura como aditivos nutricionais melhoradores de desempenho e das características quantitativas de carcaça de suínos machos castrados em terminação. Foram utilizados 48 suínos machos castrados, híbridos comerciais, com peso inicial de 68,3±3,5 kg e peso final de 99,6±3,6 kg. Os animais foram distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, composto por três níveis de cromo-levedura e selênio-levedura (controle sem suplementação de cromo-levedura e selênio-levedura; suplementação de 0,4 mg kg-1 de cromo-levedura e 0,3 mg kg-1 de selênio-levedura; e 0,8 mg kg-1 de cromo-levedura e 0,6 mg kg-1 de selênio-levedura), com oito repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental. A suplementação de cromo-levedura e selênio-levedura não influenciou (P>0,05) o consumo de ração diário, os consumos de lisina digestível, de proteína bruta e de energia metabolizável, o ganho de peso diário, a conversão alimentar, o peso e comprimento de carcaça, espessura de toucinho, profundidade de músculo, percentagem e quantidade de carne magra e índice de bonificação. A suplementação associada de cromo e selênio-levedura não influencia o desempenho e as características quantitativas de carcaça de suínos machos castrados em terminação.

ABSTRACT: The present study was performed to evaluate the association of chromium-yeast and selenium-yeast as nutritional additives to enhance performance and quantitative characteristics in the carcass of finishing barrows. A total of 48 barrows, commercial hybrid, with initial weight of 68.3±3.5 kg and final weight of 99.6±3.6 kg, were utilized for the study. The animals were distributed in a randomized complete block design, consisting of three levels of chromium-yeast and selenium-yeast (i.e., without supplementation of chromium-yeast and selenium-yeast, supplementation of 0.4 mg kg-1 chromium-yeast and 0.3 mg kg-1 selenium-yeast, and supplementation of 0.8 mg kg-1 chromium-yeast and 0.6 mg kg-1 selenium-yeast) with eight replicates and two animals per experimental unit. The supplementation of chromium and selenium-yeast did not significantly affect (P>0.05) the average daily feed intake, digestible lysine, crude protein and metabolizable energy intake, average daily weight gain, feed conversion, weight and carcass length, back fat thickness, muscle depth, percentage and amount of lean meat, and carcass allowance. These findings suggest that supplementation of chromium and selenium-yeast does not affect the performance or quantitative characteristics in the carcass of finishing barrows.

ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to compare the effects of corn processing on performance and intestinal parameters of weanling piglets. To accomplish our goal, 42 piglets (21 days-old, 7.18±1.0 kg body weight) were randomly allocated (seven pens/treatment; three pigs/pen) to one of two treatments: ground corn – corn ground through a hammer mill with a 1.0-mm screen after being ground by a hammer mill with a 3.0-mm screen, and extruded corn – corn was wet extruded after being ground by a hammer mill with a 2.0-mm screen and, after extrusion, it was ground by a hammer mill with a 1.0-mm screen. In both methods, corn from the same batch was used. Results were considered statistically significant when P<0.05 and a tendency when P<0.10. Analyses were performed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS. Pigs fed ground or extruded corn diet had similar growth performance. Duodenum and jejunum of pigs fed extruded corn had greater villus height compared with those of pigs fed ground corn. Crypt depth was not influenced by corn processing. Duodenum and jejunum of pigs fed extruded corn had greater villus:crypt ratio compared with those of pigs fed ground corn. In the duodenum, the expression of zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1) was greater, and the expression of Occludin-1 tended to be greater in pigs fed the extruded corn diets. There was no effect of corn processing on ZO-1 and Occludin-1 expression in the jejunum, nor TGF-β1 expression in duodenum and jejunum. There was no effect of the type of corn processing on colonic total bacteria or Enterobacteriaceae and Lactobacillus abundance. Piglets fed diets with ground corn or extruded corn have similar growth performance. However, piglets fed diets with extruded corn present improved intestinal morphology and tight junction protein expression compared with those fed ground corn.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary nucleotide supplementation on growth performance, serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) and uric acid levels, immune-related organs, and intestinal morphometric parameters of broiler chickens under pre- and post-inflammatory challenge with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Ninety-six seven-day-old male broiler chicks were randomized in a 2×2 factorial design composed of two dietary types (supplemented with 0 and 0.3 g of purified nucleotides/kg of feed) and two inflammatory conditions (with and without LPS administration) with eight replicates per treatment and three birds per cage. The experimental period was divided into two phases: 7-20 days of age (pre-LPS challenge) and 21-35 days of age (post-LPS challenge). Data were analyzed using one-way and two-way ANOVA for the pre- and post-challenge phases, respectively. During the pre-challenge phase, dietary nucleotide supplementation improved body weight (982 vs. 1009 g/bird), daily weight gain (58.1 vs. 60.1 g/bird), feed conversion rate (1.28 vs. 1.25 g/g), and serum concentration of IgG (1.17 vs. 1.76 mg/mL) of broilers. During the post-challenge phase, nucleotide supplementation increased serum IgG of broilers at 28 days of age (3.01 vs. 4.34 mg/mL). For the intestinal morphometric parameters, nucleotide supplementation increased villus height (299.3 vs. 315.6 μm). Dietary nucleotide supplementation improves the performance of broilers from seven to 20 days of age (pre-LPS challenge). However, from 21 to 35 days of age, supplementation of 0.3 g of purified nucleotides/kg of feed, independent of inflammatory challenge, does not contribute to improve performance of broilers. Additionally, nucleotide supplementation increases IgG production and villus height in the jejunum of broilers.

RESUMO: O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar o efeito do ácido guanidinoacético (GAA) no desempenho de leitões, bem como um possível mecanismo de ação molecular no ganho de massa magra. Setenta e dois leitões, desmamados aos 21 dias, pesando 6,80 ± 1,2 kg, foram distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente casualizado com três tratamentos dietéticos (controle, controle + 1,2 g / kg ou controle + 2,4 g / kg GAA) e 8 repetições por tratamento. A dieta controle não continha proteína animal e foi formulada a base de milho e farelo de soja. O desempenho dos animais foi avaliado aos 35, 49 e 56 dias. Ao final do experimento, um animal por unidade experimental foi abatido e amostras do músculo Vastus lateralis foram coletadas para análise de RT-qPCR e abundância de proteínas. A suplementação com GAA melhorou a eficiência alimentar (P<0,03) aos 56 dias. O músculo dos leitões suplementados apresentou maior expressão de mRNA de Akt (P<0,04) e RPS6KB2 (P <0,01). Em conclusão, a suplementação de 2,4 g / kg de GAA em leitões (21 a 56 d) melhora a eficiência alimentar e ativa mecanismos moleculares importantes para o ganho de massa magra.

ABSTRACT: The objective with the present study was to evaluate the effect of guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) on the growth performance of nursery piglets as well as a possible molecular mechanism of action on lean mass gain. Seventy-two pigs, weaned at 21 d, weighing 6.80 ± 1.2 kg were distributed in a completely randomized design into one of three dietary treatments (control, control + 1.2 g/kg GAA or control + 2.4 g/kg GAA) and 8 replicates per treatment. The control diet was an animal protein-free diet based on corn and soybean meal. Body weight, average daily weight gain, average daily feed intake and feed efficiency were evaluated at 35, 49, and 56 days. At the end of the experiment, one animal per pen was slaughtered and samples of the vastus lateralis muscle were collected for RT-qPCR and protein abundance analysis. Overall (from 21 to 56 d), GAA supplementation improved feed efficiency (P < 0.03). Skeletal muscle of pigs fed with GAA diet had greater mRNA expression of Akt (P < 0.04) and RPS6KB2 (P<0.01). In conclusion, supplementation with 2.4 g/kg GAA to nursery piglets improves feed efficiency and activates molecular mechanisms important to lean mass gain.

RESUMO: Este estudo foi conduzido para avaliar o efeito das concentrações de ractopamina no perfil lipídico da gordura e carne suína. Utilizou-se 90 machos castrados, pesando inicialmente 71,9±4,4kg, foram distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso em três concentrações de ractopamina (0, 10 e 20ppm), com quinze repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental. Foi utilizada cromatografia gasosa para analisar os perfis lipídicos da gordura subcutânea e da carne. A inclusão de ractopamina na dieta alterou (P<0,05) os níveis dos ácidos graxos α-linolênico e eicosatrienoico na gordura subcutânea e não afetou (P>0,05) nenhum dos outros ácidos graxos ou índices avaliados. Em relação à gordura da carne, houve efeito (P<0,05) sobre nove ácidos graxos avaliados, com redução (P<0,05) dos ácidos graxos láurico, mirístico e palmítico, e aumento (P<0,05) do linoleico, γ-linolênico, dihomo-γ-linolênico e eicosapentaenoico. A ractopamina também afetou (P<0,05) a concentração do linolênico e araquidônico na carne. Os índices avaliados também foram afetados (P<0,05). A inclusão de 10ppm diminuiu a concentração dos ácidos graxos saturados, índice aterogênico, índice trombogênico e ômega 6: ômega 3, e aumentou a concentração dos ácidos graxos insaturados e poli-insaturados. A inclusão de ractopamina teve menor efeito na gordura subcutânea do que na carne, sendo que o nível de 10ppm melhorou o perfil lipídico da carne.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ractopamine concentrations on swine fat and meat lipid profiles. Ninety finishing barrows, initially weighing 71.9±4.4kg, were distributed in a randomized block design in three ractopamine concentrations (0, 10 and 20ppm) with fifteen replicates of two animals in each. Gas chromatography was used to analyze the lipid profiles of backfat and meat. The inclusion of ractopamine in the diet changed (P<0.05) α-linolenic acid and eicosatrienoic acid concentrations in the backfat but did not affect (P>0.05) any of the other fatty acids or indexes evaluated. In the meat, a significant effect (P<0.05) was observed on nine fatty acids evaluated, with a decrease (P<0.05) in lauric, myristic, and palmitic fatty acids, and an increase (P<0.05) in linoleic, γ-linolenic, dihomo-γ-linolenic, and eicosapentaenoic acid. Ractopamine also affected (P<0.05) the concentration of α-linolenic and arachidonic acid in the meat (P<0.05). The indexes evaluated were also affected (P<0.05). Addition of 10ppm decreased the saturated fatty acid concentration, atherogenic index, thrombogenic index and omega 6: omega 3, while it increased unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids concentrations. Ractopamine addition had less effect on the backfat than on the meat, and the 10ppm level improved the meat lipid profile.

RESUMO Objetivou-se conduzir estudo colaborativo para avaliação do teor de matéria mineral em alimentos em sete laboratórios de análise de alimentos de instituições integrantes do Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia de Ciência Animal (INCT-CA). Avaliaram-se seis alimentos: feno de capim-braquiária, cana-deaçúcar, silagem de milho grão, farelo de soja, milho e polpa cítrica. Solicitou-se a cada laboratório que as amostras fossem analisadas por seis dias, consecutivos ou não, sendo realizadas três repetições por amostra por dia de avaliação. Foi observado variação entre laboratórios, dias de análise e efeito de interação de material e laboratório. A variação dos resultados entre laboratórios correspondeu de 33,5 a 78,2% da variação aleatória total. Verificou-se que a repetibilidade representou de 8,5 a 51,6% da reprodutibilidade. Observou-se razões de Horwitz superiores a dois para três dos materiais avaliados. Foi constatado que 42,9% das avaliações apresentaram variações das estimativas em função do dia no qual a análise foi realizada. Também foram verificadas diferenças entre procedimentos de avaliação de matéria mineral em função dos diferentes laboratórios. Os teores de matéria mineral estimados pelos laboratórios participantes deste estudo apresentam baixa reprodutibilidade, o que é agravado pela presença de efeito de interação do material avaliado e do laboratório.

SUMMARY The objective was to conduct a collaborative study to evaluate the mineral matter contents in feeds in seven feed analysis laboratories from institutions linked to the National Institute of Science and Technology in Animal Science (INCT-CA). Six feeds were evaluated: signal grass hey, sugarcane, corn silage, soybean meal, corn grain and citrus pulp. It was asked to each laboratory that the samples were analyzed for six days, consecutive or not, with three replicates per sample per day of evaluation. Variations were observed among laboratories, days of analysis and interaction effect of material and laboratory. The variation of results among laboratories accounted from 33.5 to 78.2% of the total random variation. It was verified that the repeatability represented 8.5 to 51.6% of reproducibility. It was noticed Horwitz ratios greater than 2 for three materials tested. It was found that 42.9% of the assessments show variations of the estimates as a function of days in which analysis was performed. Differences were also observed between procedures to assess mineral matter according to the different laboratories. The mineral matter contents estimate by each laboratory in this study have low reproducibility, which is aggravated by the interaction effect of material and laboratory.

RESUMO: Este estudo foi conduzido com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito dos níveis de energia líquida no perfil lipídico da gordura e carne suína. Foram utilizados 90 animais, com peso inicial de 71,94±4,43kg, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso em cinco níveis de energia líquida (2.300, 2.425, 2.550, 2.675 e 2.800Kcal kg-1 de ração), com nove repetições e dois animais por unidade experimental. Foram analisados os perfis lipídicos da gordura subcutânea e da carne por cromatografia gasosa. O aumento do nível de energia líquida usando óleo de soja melhorou o perfil lipídico da gordura subcutânea e da carne, aumentando linearmente (P<0,05) a concentração dos ácidos graxos poli-insaturados, especialmente ácido linoleico e α-linolênico, reduzindo linearmente (P<0,05) os ácidos graxos monoinsaturados e saturados e ômega 6: ômega 3. No tecido adiposo foi observado redução linear (P<0,05) dos índices aterogênico e trombogênico. Em conclusão, o aumento do nível de energia líquida da dieta, com a utilização do óleo de soja, melhora o perfil lipídico da gordura subcutânea e da carne suína.

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of net energy levels on the lipid profile of adipose tissue and muscle of swines. A total of 90 animals, with initial weight of 71.94±4.43kg, were used, and distributed in a randomized block design in five net energy levels (2,300, 2,425, 2,550, 2,675, and 2,800Kcal kg-1 feed), with nine replicates and two animals per experimental unit. Lipid profiles of adipose tissue and muscle were analyzed using gas chromatography. Increasing the levels of net energy using soybean oil, improved the lipid profile of adipose tissue and muscle, increased linearly (P<0.05) the concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic and α-linolenic acid, reduced linearly (P<0.05) the monounsaturated and saturated fatty acids and omega 6: omega 3. In adipose tissue was observed linear reduction (P<0.05) of atherogenic and thrombogenic indexes. In conclusion, increasing the level of net energy of the diet using soybean oil improved the lipid profile of adipose tissue and muscle.

RESUMO Estudo colaborativo foi conduzido para avaliação do teor de proteína bruta (PB) em diferentes amostras de alimentos em sete diferentes laboratórios de análise de alimentos de instituições integrantes do Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia de Ciência Animal (INCTCA). Foram utilizadas amostras de quatro alimentos (cana-de-açúcar, silagem de milho, farelo de soja e milho grão) e quatro compostos que foram assumidos como padrões para aferição da exatidão das estimativas (ureia, fosfato de amônia monobásico, ácido etileno diamínico tetra-acético e sulfato de amônio). Cada laboratório analisou as amostras durante seis dias, consecutivos ou não, sendo realizadas três repetições por amostra em cada dia de avaliação. As variâncias entre laboratórios e dentro de laboratórios (repetibilidade) representaram 34,5 e 10,3 % da variação total. A avaliação das recuperações de nitrogênio a partir dos padrões permitiu evidenciar que 25% das observações apresentaram vícios significativos de recuperação (P<0,001). A avaliação global das amostras propiciou variações significativas (P<0,001) em função: do dia de análise, interação do material com o laboratório e entre laboratórios. Adicionalmente, verificou-se que a variação dos resultados entre laboratórios correspondeu de 43,6 a 68,2% da variação aleatória total, ao passo que a repetibilidade (variação intra-laboratorial) representou de 11,9 a 42,8% da reprodutibilidade. Os teores de PB estimados pelos laboratórios participantes são dependentes do efeito de interação do material avaliado e do laboratório, possível reflexo das várias diferenças entre os procedimentos utilizados por cada laboratório.

SUMMARY A collaborative study was conducted to evaluate the crude protein (CP) content in feeds in seven feed analysis laboratories from institutions linked to the National Institute of Science and Technology in Animal Science (INCT-CA). Were evaluated four samples of different feeds (sugarcane, corn silage, soybean meal and corn grain) and four nitrogen compounds assumed as standards (urea, monobasic ammonium phosphate, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid and ammonium sulfate) to measure the accuracy of the estimates. Each laboratory analyzed the samples for six days, consecutive or not, with three replicates per sample per day of evaluation. The variances among laboratories and within of laboratories (repeatability) represented 34.5 and 10.3% of the total variation, respectively. The evaluation of nitrogen recovered from the standards showed that 25% of observations presented a significant bias (P<0.001). The overall assessment of the samples demonstrated significant variations (P<0.001) in function of the day of analysis, interaction of material with laboratory, and among laboratories. Additionally, it was found that the variation among laboratories corresponded of 43.6 to 68.2% of the total of random variation, while the repeatability (intra-laboratory variation) represented of 11.9 to 42.8% of reproducibility. The CP contents estimated are dependent of the interaction effect of the evaluated material and laboratory, which reflect the differences between the procedures utilized by each laboratory.

RESUMO: Para avaliar níveis de inclusão e o efeito residual de dietas contendo extrato de levedura (ExL) associado ao plasma sanguíneo (PS) sobre o desempenho de leitões dos 36 aos 60 dias, foram utilizados 105 leitões (8,75±0,72kg), distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com cinco tratamentos (controle - 2,0% de PS; 1,0% PS, associado ao 0; 1,0; 2,0 ou 3,0% de ExL), sete repetições e três animais por unidade experimental. As dietas experimentais foram fornecidas dos 36 aos 49 dias e, dos 50 aos 60 dias de idade, os animais passaram a receber dieta única para avaliar o efeito residual dos tratamentos experimentais. Não foram observados efeitos dos tratamentos (P>0,10) sobre as variáveis de desempenho dos 36 aos 49 dias de idade. Dos 50 aos 60 dias de idade, houve efeito dos níveis de ExL sobre o consumo de ração diário (P<0,03), ganho de peso diário (P<0,01) e peso final (P<0,06) que aumentaram de forma quadrática até os níveis de 1,67, 1,67 e 1,55% de ExL, respectivamente. Leitões alimentados com a dieta contendo 1,0% de PS + 2,0% de ExL apresentaram melhor (P<0,01) conversão alimentar em relação à dieta controle (2% de PS). Por proporcionar melhor efeito residual, a inclusão de 1,67% de extrato de levedura pode substituir 50% do plasma sanguíneo na dieta de leitões dos 36 aos 49 dias de idade.

ABSTRACT: To evaluate inclusion levels and residual effects of diets containing yeast extract (YE) plus blood plasma (BP) on the performance of 36 to 60-days old piglets, 105 piglets were used (8.75±0.72kg), and they were distributed under a randomized block experimental design with five treatments (control - 2.0% BP; 1.0% BP plus 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, or 3.0% YE), seven repetitions, and three animals per experimental unit. Piglets were given experimental diets from 36 to 49 days of age. From 50 to 60 day of age, all piglets received the same diet. No effects from treatments (P>0.10) were observed on the performance variables from 36 to 49 day of age. From 50 to 60 day of age, an effect was observed from YE levels on the daily feed consumption (P<0.03), daily weight gain (p<0.01), and final weight (P<0.06), which increased quadratically up to 1.67, 1.67, and 1.55% YE levels, respectively. Piglets which were fed with the diet containing 1.0% BP + 2.0% YE were observed to have better feed conversion ratios (P<0.01) as compared to the control diet (2.0% BP). As it provides a better residual effect, the inclusion of 1.67% yeast extract may replace 50% of blood plasma in 36 to 49-days old piglet diets.

RESUMO. Avaliaram-se os efeitos da quantidade de mistura digestora e da razão dos componentes da mistura digestora utilizada no método de Kjeldahl para quantificação do nitrogênio total em diferentes materiais. Foram utilizadas quatro amostras com baixo teor de nitrogênio e quatro amostras com alto teor de nitrogênio. Avaliou-se a comninação de duas razões entre sal (sulfato de sódio) e catalisador metálico (sulfato de cobre) na mistura digestora (10:1 e 20:1) e três quantidades de mistura digestora por amostra (1,0; 1,5 e 2,0 g 200 mg-1). Para os materiais de baixo nitrogênio houve interação entre o material analisado e a quantidade de mistura digestora. Amostras de fezes bovinas e milho apresentaram maiores teores de nitrogênio com o uso de 1,5 e 2,0 g de mistura digestora. Para os materiais de alto nitrogênio verificou-se maior teor de nitrogênio com o uso de 2,0 g de mistura digestora. No entanto, houve interação entre material avaliado e razão na mistura digestora para amostras de alto nitrogênio. Amostra de carcaça bovina apresentou maior teor de nitrogênio utilizando-se a razão 20:1. A quantidade de mistura digestora para o método de Kjeldahl deve ser de 2,0 g com razão entre sal e catalisador metálico de 20:1 para amostras de aproximadamente 200 mg.

ABSTRACT. The effects of the salt-to-metal catalyst ratio and amount of digestion mixture on total nitrogen content in different materials using the Kjeldahl method were evaluated. Four samples with low nitrogen contents and four samples with high nitrogen contents were analyzed. The study evaluated two ratios of salt (sodium sulfate) to metal catalyst (copper sulfate) in the digestion mixture (10:1 and 20:1) and three amounts of digestion mixture per sample (1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g 200 mg-1). There was an interaction between low-nitrogen material and amount of digestion mixture on nitrogen contents. Samples of cattle feces and corn presented higher nitrogen content when 1.5 and 2.0 g of digestion mixture were used. The high-nitrogen materials presented higher nitrogen contents when 2.0 g of the digestion mixture was used. However, there was an interaction between high-nitrogen material and the ratio of the digestion mixture components. The cattle carcass sample showed higher nitrogen content when the 20:1 ratio was used. The digestion mixture amount in the Kjeldahl method must be 2.0 g with a salt-to-metal catalyst ratio of 20:1 when samples of approximately 200 mg are analyzed.

ResumoObjetivou-se conduzir estudo colaborativo para avaliação do teor de matéria seca em alimentos em seis laboratórios de análise de alimentos de instituições integrantes do Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia de Ciência Animal (INCT-CA). Avaliaram-se seis alimentos: cana-de-açúcar, silagem de milho, capim-elefante, farelo de soja, polpa cítrica e mistura de milho grão com ureia (9:1). Solicitou-se a cada laboratório análises das amostras por onze dias, consecutivos ou não, sendo realizadas três repetições por amostra por dia de avaliação. Observou-se variação entre laboratórios, dias de análise e efeito de interação de material e laboratório. Avaliação comparativa das médias produzidas pelos laboratórios e pelo método de Karl Fischer indicou que 11,1% das avaliações foram exatas. A variação dos resultados entre laboratórios correspondeu de 54,1 a 79,2% da variação aleatória total. Verificou-se que a repetibilidade representou de 6,24 a 26,45% da reprodutibilidade. Observou-se razões de Horwitz inferiores a 2 para os materiais avaliados. Percebeu-se que 52,8% das avaliações apresentaram variações das estimativas em função do dia no qual a análise foi realizada. Elevada variabilidade inter-laboratorial foi verificada por intermédio da avaliação dos questionários enviados aos laboratórios para elucidação dos principais procedimentos adotados, evidenciando possíveis causas da alta variação dos resultados.

AbstractThe objective was to conduct a collaborative study to evaluate the dry matter contents in feeds in six feed analysis laboratories from institutions linked to the National Institute of Science and Technology in Animal Science (INCT-CA). Six feeds were evaluated: sugarcane, corn silage, elephant grass, soybean meal, citrus pulp, and corn mixed with urea (9:1). It was asked to each laboratory that the samples were analyzed for eleven days, consecutive or not, with three replicates per sample per day of evaluation. There were variations among laboratories, days of analysis and interaction effect of material and laboratory. Comparative evaluation between the average contents produced by the laboratories and the Karl Fischer method indicated that 11.1% of the assessments were found accurate. The variation of results among laboratories accounted from 54.1 to 79.2% of the total random variation. It was found that the repeatability represented 6.24 to 26.45% of reproducibility. There are Horwitz ratios less than 2 for all materials tested. It was noticed that 52.8% of the assessments show variations of the estimates as a function of days in which analysis was performed. High inter-laboratory variability was checked through the evaluation of questionnaires sent to laboratories to elucidate the main procedures used in each laboratory, which can possible explain the great variation of the estimates obtained here.
