Abstract Introduction: Tropical rivers are increasingly being affected by fragmentation and regulation; and, in Colombia, dams are known to endanger endemic fishes through, among others, limited migration and reduced availability of sediment-based feeding networks. However, knowledge of native ichthyofauna affected by dams in high Andean rivers is still incipient. Objective: To assess the effects of the Neusa dam on the ichthyofauna. Methods: We compared two rivers' sections, one above and one below the dam with the Richter IHA System, we sampled three 100 m long transects in each section, every two months, between 2017 and 2019. The fishes were returned to the river after body measurements. Results: We collected 729 individuals from five families; Trichomycterus bogotense were smaller under the dam; Oncorhynchus mykiss was smaller and less abundant; and there were no differences for Grundulus bogotensis and Eremophilus mutisii. Independently of climatic factors, O. mykiss and G. bogotensis were more abundant above the dam, and E. mutisii and T. bogotense under the dam. Conclusion: The five fish species differed in how the populations differed above and under the dam, suggesting that some are benefited by the dam, while others become smaller and less abundant.

Abstract Three marine microalgae strains (Schizochytrium sp., Navicula sp., and Grammatophora sp.) and a mix of three probiotic bacteria (Lactobacillus spp.) were evaluated to feed white-shrimp larvae (Penaeus vannamei). These species were cultured outdoors without temperature or light control. Chaetoceros muelleri was cultured with standard techniques and used as control. Penaeus vanammei larvae were cultured at densities of 175 nauplii L-1 in 70 L experimental units. Microalgae concentration was maintained between 70,000 and 125,000 cells mL-1 and probiotic at 114 x 103 UFC mL-1. Shrimp larvae were cultured in nauplius stage V and maintained up to Mysis I. The bromatological composition and its performance in larvae were assessed at the end of the experiment. The best survivals were observed in trials with the control Chaetoceros muelleri (61.6 %), the mixture of Grammatophora sp. and Schizochytrium sp. plus probiotics (58.3 %) and the mixture of Grammatophora sp. and Schizochytrium sp. (55.8 %). A mortality close to 100 % was observed with Navicula sp. monoalgal fed. These results suggest that Grammatophora sp. + Schizochytrium sp. cultured outdoors can be used to feed shrimp larvae.

ABSTRACT: We developed a mid infrared (MIR) solar telescope, centered at 10µm. Various optical layouts were analyzed based on computer simulations and a Ritchey-Chretien 6-inches telescope was selected with a plate scale of 2.5′′/mm using a pyroelectric 4 × 16 pixels detector. The angular resolution is 36′′/pixel with a field of view of 9.6′ × 2.4′. Two germanium filters are used, one at the aperture of the telescope and another near its focal plane. The detector was characterized with a laboratory black-body. The count values follow a linear relation with the black-body temperature. The control systems for both the telescope and the detector were developed. Proper mechanical supports were designed for the filters, detector and electronics. The system has been integrated and a user interface was developed. Preliminary observations have been made giving a signal-to-noise ratio of ≈ 1000.

Abstract This study reports the effect of the concentration of magnetite powders (Fe3O4) on the electrical and magnetic properties of a resin-based composite of thermoset polyester. The samples were prepared by the casting method at different concentrations: 60-40, 70-30, 80-20, 90-10 and 100-0 (% in weight), where the primary phase was resin and the secondary, Fe3O4 powders. The crystalline structure was studied using X-ray diffraction and surface characterization was carried out applying the scanning electron microscopy technique. The electrical response was measured by electric polarization curves as a function of the electric field; and the volumetric electrical resistivity, by an electrometer. The magnetic response was determined by magnetization curves as a function of temperature and intensity of the applied magnetic field. The structural analysis indicates that crystallinity increases as higher concentrations of Fe3O4 are added to the samples. The electrical characterization of the material reveals that the volumetric resistivity decreases as the content of magnetite increases. These reactions indicate an insulation-conductor transition with increasing dielectric constant values. The magnetic characterization presents a linear increase of the saturation of magnetization and magnetic moment as a function of the amount of magnetite added to the polymer matrix, whereas the coercivity shows behaviors of soft magnetic materials for T > T V and for T < T V, where Tv represents the temperature of Verwey.

Toxicity and genotoxicity tests were performed on root cells of Allium cepa in order to evaluate wastewater quality following an ECF cellulose bleaching process. The results revealed a toxic effect of the effluent, with inhibition of meristem growth and generally lower values of metaphase, anaphase and telophase indices at pH 10.5 than pH 7 for all effluent concentrations. The genotoxicity effect was different from the toxic effect given that the micronucleus and the chromosomal aberration tests in anaphase-telophase cells were low over all ranges of the studied effluent concentrations.
